OF SCHOOL

Dear Trinity Hall Community,

What a gift to join such a vibrant, committed and generous community -- dedicated to excellence, the empowerment of young women, and facing challenges with joy and determination! Our Core Value of Faith has been at the heart of all we accomplished this year, as we navigated the final challenges of the endemic with an indefatigable spirit.

I thank our founders, our board members, and Mary Sciarrillo for their examples of singular dedication to each and every one of our students. We all stand on their shoulders as Trinity Hall is poised to continue its advance in its second decade! I am inspired by our faculty and staff for their fierce intelligence, staggering generosity of time and talent, and for the boundless sense of fun they bring to their work. Our students are blessed by their examples each day. I am grateful to all of our families and dedicated supporters who sacrifice so much to help Trinity Hall advance its mission in service to the young women in our care.

I especially thank our students, who we place at the center of all we do. Our students’ passion for their learning, for nurturing their own talents and for helping their Trinity Hall sisters shine inspire and motivate me each day. Their passion, laughter, kindness and commitment to one another and to others are an antidote to apathy. With the example of our Trinity Hall alumnae before them, I cannot wait to see who and what our students become!

Our accomplishments in the 2021-2022 school year highlight how we all persevere as we lead by example, armed with the gifts of faith in God, faith in ourselves, and an unwavering commitment to respecting all around us as we grow together.

Thank you for your partnership and support!

Gratefully,

LETTER FROM THE HEAD

HISTORY

In 2010, after many years of discussion, Mairead and Sean Clifford, Victoria and Justin Gmelich, and many others began the journey of starting an independent, all-girls high school in Monmouth County. The first step was to hire a professional educational consulting firm to conduct a county-wide feasibility study which proved an overwhelming demand for a single-sex school to serve the young women of our region.

In September 2013, we opened our doors to an inaugural class in a temporary location in Leonardo, NJ before moving to our permanent location at the former Fort Monmouth in Tinton Falls. The campus has undergone renovations and a major expansion over the years. Today Trinity Hall has over 300 students from more than 55 different towns in Monmouth, Middlesex, and Ocean counties.

MISSION

Trinity Hall is an independent, all-girls school that educates and empowers young women in the Catholic tradition through an innovative college preparatory program grounded in our four core values of leadership, respect, perseverance, and faith. Trinity Hall prepares each student to achieve her full potential as she embraces her place in the world.

TRINITY HALL ALUMNAE SPOTLIGHT

Hannah Reynolds Class of 2019

Conducted Education Research at an All-Girls School in Uganda

While completing her senior capstone as a global affairs major with a concentration in international development studies at the University of Notre Dame, Hannah Reynolds ‘19 lived and conducted research at an allgirls vocational school, St. Bakhita's Vocational Training Center in Kalongo, Uganda. While in Uganda, Hannah surveyed local families on their choice of vocational education and their motivations for sending their children, especially their daughters, to school. Hannah made a unique connection with the students at St. Bakhita’s as they were also a part of a new, all-girl’s school, just like Hannah was at Trinity Hall. The students Hannah interacted with at St. Bakhita’s were the first cohort to go through the school after the reopening of the school post-Covid shutdown in 2020.

Angelica Niedermeyer Class of 2020

Published in National News Source for Research Abroad

After spending three weeks in Thailand and conducting research, Angelica Niedermeyer ‘20, a journalism student at Manhattan College, completed an original research project and article that was published by the U.S. News & World Report. Sponsored by Round Earth Media and the International Women's Media Foundation, Angelica was given the opportunity to study abroad and carry out field research on the effects of Covid-19 on tourism and captive elephants in Thailand. After collaborating with her peers and mentors, visiting attractions and sanctuaries, interviewing advocates, and working with editors, Angelica’s relevant research was published in a renowned news source.

“Working with the International Women's Media Foundation as a female journalist was something I really took pride in. Coming from Trinity Hall, they taught us the importance of women in leadership, and carrying on the core values throughout my life brought me these moments.”

8
“Trinity Hall was a big inspiration for my research topic… Never could I have imagined in high school I would be doing something like this in college.”

Brigid Clifford Class of 2018

Joined the second cohort of Pine Gate’s Renewable Energy Analyst Program

After finishing her final year at Georgetown, Brigid Clifford '18 moved to Asheville, NC to work at Pine Gate Renewables, a utility-scale solar development company, as an analyst. She joined the second cohort of Pine Gate’s Renewable Energy Analyst Program, which reminds her of her time as a member of Trinity Hall's second graduating class. Through her coursework at Georgetown, her internship conducting market research for a renewable energy start-up, and working in the Department of Energy’s Insider Threat Program, Brigid got to explore and develop her interest in renewable energy markets and policy. These experiences inspired her to pursue a career in the field.

Lucy Retterer Class of 2021

Selected to be a Solar System Ambassador for NASA

In early 2022 Lucy Retterer ‘21, a physics major at the University of Southern California, was selected to join the Solar System Ambassador Program of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. As an ambassador it is Lucy’s responsibility to share information and excitement about real missions that explore our solar system. Volunteer ambassadors in communities throughout the country are selected by JPL based on their backgrounds and their plans for public outreach activities. In an interactive presentation to Trinity Hall students, Lucy discussed the Ambassador program, explained the basics of black holes, and shared how recent images of black holes had been obtained by NASA.

“From Trinity Hall’s engineering department teaching me valuable skills, to finding a way for me to take an astronomy class my senior year where I created a 32-page astronomy crash course textbook of my own, I’ve felt incredible support and know I wouldn’t have had such a strong application if it weren’t for my time spent at Trinity Hall.”

9
"I am grateful that Trinity Hall has instilled in me the courage and confidence to say yes to this exciting opportunity, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds!"

CHAIR

Dear Trinity Hall Community,

After several years of planning, on May 11, 2012, Trinity Hall incorporated in the state of New Jersey. Just sixteen months later, on September 4, 2013, Trinity Hall welcomed thirty young ladies, as our inaugural class, full of enthusiasm and ready to make history! This was an exciting day for the Trinity Hall Community. Plans are underway to celebrate our ten-year anniversary during the 2023-2024 school year. We anticipate a year of reflection on the past ten years but, more importantly, excitement for the future of our school.

The state of our school is strong. We continue to attract talented young women, evidenced by our record-breaking 2023 admissions cycle. Our seniors continue to receive acceptances to their top college choices, and we continue to excel in academics, athletics, and the arts. Under the skilled leadership of Ms. Blaine, Trinity Hall’s outstanding faculty and staff fulfill our mission to prepare each student to achieve her full potential. Sisterhood is evident in every aspect of the school. My absolute favorite moments are walking the halls and literally stepping over girls as they sit in the hallways collaborating, working on their laptops, or just singing! “The Hall” has always held a special place in my heart: from the

narrow hallways at Croydon Hall, to the hallways in the West Wing, to our new and beautiful hallways in Gmelich Hall. In my opinion, this is where the magic of Trinity Hall takes place. I see our four core values in action: Leadership, Respect, Perseverance, and Faith.

I am blessed to work with a Board of Trustees with a broad array of talents and perspectives. There is much work to be done as we consider the expansion of our campus. Funding financial aid and merit scholarships, and growing our endowment, continue to be Board priorities, we are committed to providing the opportunity of a Trinity Hall education to qualified young women, regardless of their family’s financial status, now and in the future. We are extremely grateful for the generosity of our community and the support for the Fund for Trinity Hall.

It is an honor and privilege to serve as the third Chairperson of the Board of Trustees. I sincerely thank my predecessors, Sean Clifford and Victoria Gmelich, for their tireless dedication and strong leadership to Trinity Hall.

Go Monarchs!

OTHER FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGNS

Your support through charitable gifts, volunteer opportunities, and fundraising events is important as a key member of the school community. The Fund for Trinity Hall is an annual campaign, but as new needs arise at the school, new campaigns are created to address those needs. Here are other ways in which you can help Trinity Hall continue to flourish:

MARY’S FUND FOR THE GIRLS: NOW AND FOREVER

In June of 2021, Trinity Hall Founding Head of School Mary Sciarrillo retired after nearly 30 years in all-girls education. It was Mary’s wish to make a Trinity Hall education accessible to families at all income levels. Mary's Fund for the Girls: Now and Forever, a financial aid and endowment fund, was started in Mary's honor to ensure that her legacy would live on in an impactful way.

INVOCATION

Heavenly Father,

We give thanks for each member of the Class of 2022 gathered here today. Thank you for the many gifts you have given us, which we hope to carry and cultivate even further in the years to come.

Thank you, Father, for giving us a place at Trinity Hall where our differences are not only encouraged, but celebrated.

Thank you for surrounding us with teachers who invest in us and equip us with everything we need to be our best selves. Lord, thank you for our teachers’ unending energy and passion for our success.

Thank you for our administrators and staff members who you work through every day to deliver the experience that is Trinity Hall.

Thank you for our Board Members who have made everything possible in your name.

And we especially thank you for our parents, who have poured love into us every step of the way.

Lord may your spirit be with us and grant us wisdom, protection, and love. We celebrate your love:

- the love we have for one another

- the love we have for the time we have spent together, and

- the love that inspires us to make the world a better place.

By your grace we hope to represent Trinity Hall and our sisterhood in this next chapter, and share what we have learned wherever we go.

We invoke your blessing as the Trinity Hall Class of 2022 -- and we ask for your guidance and boundless love as we take the next step of our journey. Be with us always, and help us always to be there for one another.

We pray this all in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

Amen.

VALEDICTORIAN ADDRESS

An excerpt from the valedictorian address given by Caroline Cashman. Caroline is a member of the William & Mary Class of 2026.

Welcome trustees, faculty, staff, family, and friends, and thank you for coming to celebrate the accomplishments of Trinity Hall’s Class of 2022.

After four years of research papers, summatives, final projects, and more research papers, I think we can all agree that there is nothing more difficult about attending Trinity Hall than trying to explain what our mascot is to a stranger.

For those of you who don’t know, we are the Trinity Hall Monarchs. You might be thinking, that’s easy, you guys are butterflies. You would be wrong. Our actual mascot is both a lioness and a monarch, an accurate representation of a student body that is courageous, team-oriented, and totally rules. Although I feel a little guilty turning my back on the lioness inside of me, the assumed mascot of the monarch butterfly serves as an equally appropriate representation of a class that has been transformed by our time at Trinity Hall.

In our last period of English this year, we spoke about what our finest moments of high school were. One classmate, Hayden, did not speak about a specific experience but about how she was proud of how she had transformed over these past four years. As we went around the classroom sharing what we were most proud of in high school, it became clear that many of our finest moments have been moments of growth. Moments when we excelled - Kira gracefully flying through the air to place in a state gymnastics competition, and me, catching a football in the sophomore year flag football tournament - both totally equal accomplishments. Anastasia’s moment of gaining confidence at her job, leading her to step outside of her comfort zone. Tess’s moment of pausing to appreciate the simple joy of being surrounded by good friends. Trinity Hall has allowed us to metamorphose from awkward freshmen into capable young women, daring enough to embrace change in all its forms. This growth would not have been possible without the people supporting us here today.

Thank you to our founders and board of trustees, who work tirelessly to make Trinity Hall an environment that nurtures growth. Thank you to our friends and family, who have inspired personal growth through their unconditional love. Thank you to our faculty and staff, who have helped us achieve both academic and personal growth, through their dedication to educating us as students and as people. Thank you to Ms. Blaine, who has stepped up to her role as head of school fearlessly, demonstrating that although it is difficult to say goodbye to those who have transformed us, change leads to a bright future.

Monarch butterflies are not simply known for their metamorphoses but their migration patterns, traveling thousands of miles in a lifespan. Likewise, Class of 2022, our journey has just begun. As we migrate beyond the walls of Trinity Hall, it is our responsibility to take what we have learned and continue to transform ourselves and the world around us. With a class of aspiring surgeons, lawyers, professors, and FBI agents - I won’t name anyone this time so that I don’t blow any covers - there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that we will change the world for the better. Yet as your classmate, I know that through our curiosity, grit, compassion, and optimism, we will impact the individual lives of every person we meet. You have transformed me for the better, and I am grateful for every moment I spent with you.

Without further ado: Congratulations Trinity Hall Class of 2022!

COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS

Caroline Gmelich is a member of the founding Class of 2017 and a member of the University of Virginia’s Class of 2021. Here is an excerpt from her commencement address:

My name is Caroline Gmelich, and I am so honored to be here to give this commencement address. It feels surreal to be back and part of Trinity Hall again. I see we have moved to a larger venue. My classmates and I graduated at the tiny Pollack Theatre on the other side of this campus. While things have changed a lot, it is comforting to see so much of the original faculty in the audience.

It has been quite a ride since those first days at Croydon Hall. I didn’t really have a choice in attending Trinity Hall. My parents started the school, I had to go there, right? But I am sure some of you graduating today made the choice all by yourself, and I hope you all are happy you did because I believe the experience here will equip you with the skills not only for collegebut for life. The coursework, the relationships, the independence has laid the groundwork for you to excel elsewhere and beyond.

Let's not forget about the four core values: leadership, respect, perseverance, and faith. Perseverance has always been my favorite though. Because as much as hard work and talent are worth, perseverance is what will differentiate you from the crowd.

I will tell you a little bit about my experience with perseverance in a moment but first let me tell you about another core value that I have come to hold dear: perspective.

I was a biology major and swimmer at the University of Virginia. By the end of my career at UVA, I was successful on paper. But you would have never guessed I’d have been so successful if you had met me as a first year. My first year was really, really difficult. I struggled in almost every class I took, even ones that were supposed to be “easy As”. But, more surprisingly, I struggled in the pool.

36

By the time that first year was over I had a mediocre GPA, and I was arguably the worst swimmer on the UVA team. While all of my teammates stayed at UVA for the summer to train, I came home. I needed a break and I had to evaluate what needed to change. I was stuck. I also needed a little bit of the Jersey shore to figure it out.

In the movie Soul Surfer, Carrie Underwood plays a youth minister and has the youth group play a guessing game. She shows a picture that you can’t really identify and asks the group to guess what the object is. No one in the group was able to recognize the objects without her zooming out and showing the bigger picture. The point of this exercise is to illustrate that sometimes we can’t see what’s in front of us without taking a step back and getting some perspective. So, sometimes you have to think “big picture.”

During my first year at UVA I was only thinking “small picture.” I decided that success or failure in the classroom or in the pool could not be what defined me. Because swimming, or any sport or any class for that matter, is not forever. I can tell you first hand that seeing things from another perspective can truly alter your reality. Now on to perseverance.

Everyone here knows that life is hard. Contrasting the mostly in-person experience you had here, I had my entire fourth year of college online. I was also captain of the swim team that year, and to say the restrictions placed on our team were intense would be an understatement. I started at UVA as one of 13 swimmers in my grade. By October of my fourth year there were only 5 of us left. Most quit because they felt like it wasn’t worth it.

I got to the point where I started to agree with my classmates who did quit; maybe it wasn’t worth it. Maybe I was wasting my time. Truthfully, it was the hardest year of my life. But I didn’t quit.

I thought back to the girl whose dream it was to swim at UVA. The Trinity Hall student who sent an email to the UVA coaches on a whim, thinking they wouldn’t even respond. To the girl who went on a visit to UVA and basically begged to be recruited. I didn’t quit for her. I persevered.

I broke an American Record and made the top 8 at NCAAs - something I literally had never dreamt possible. That same year, our team won the first ever swimming and diving national championship at UVA. After a full year of trials and tribulations, we were able to celebrate victory as a team that persisted despite the circumstances.

As you all continue forward onto your separate paths, I implore you to take inventory of your surroundings. Understand and appreciate that your successes have not happened independently. Perspective and perseverance are only part of the journey. Without my friends and family to lean on, I would have never seen the fruits of my labor.

The last thing I will say is that it is ok to struggle. It's ok to need help. You have all heard this before, but in college especially, it will become glaringly obvious that no one has it all figured out. Find your community and lean on it. Congratulations again to the Class of 2022. You can do anything. Go Monarchs!

FOUNDERS’ AWARD

The Founders Award serves to recognize the member or members of the Trinity Hall community whose commitment to the success of Trinity Hall mirrors the dedication of the Founders – Mairead and Sean Clifford and Victoria and Justin Gmelich.

Trinity Hall was founded with the vision to educate and empower young women in the Catholic tradition, finally giving girls in Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean counties an academically rigorous single-sex option for their high school years. Trinity Hall has become an innovative, independent all-girls college preparatory high school educating and empowering girls.

Each year, the faculty committee will nominate for this award and the selection will be made by the founders. The sixth Founders Award is presented to:
