Trinity Hall Annual Report 2022-2023

Page 1

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Dear all,

It’s incredible to think that June 30, 2023 was the official end of Trinity Hall’s tenth year in operation. Looking back, that decade seems like both a lifetime and a blink of an eye. What was started in September of 2013 –the only all-girls college preparatory school in Monmouth County – looked very different from the school standing here in 2024. We are at a completely different address, our current school building is four times the size of our humble home on Leonardville Road, we have graduated 312 young women, built a tremendous athletics program, won 13 Basie Awards for our performing arts program and sent graduates to the best colleges across the nation. The list of achievements greatly outpaces the years it took to reach them, but the lessons we have learned along the way have made us wiser and we are grateful to be sitting where we are.

While it may seem that Trinity Hall has had racing growth, our priority has always been to preserve the things that are fundamental to our identity. We live our mission every day through the work of the educators executing our signature programming. We remain the only all-girls college preparatory school in Monmouth County. We fully intend to continue a tradition of excellence into the next decade and beyond. Our students are at the forefront of everything we do and every decision we make.

The last year was a good bookend to the first chapter of the Trinity Hall story. We persevered with great determination, overcame obstacles and are proud of the milestones we reached by the end of the 2023 school year. As we move forward, we look toward an exciting future - together. There are great things ahead for Trinity Hall, and embarking on this next season requires the partnership of our community of supporters. We invite you to join us as we build on our exceptional start.

The future starts now. Thank you for being a part of it.

Sincerely,

In 2013, Trinity Hall opened its doors to our inaugural ninth grade class, finally providing girls in and around Monmouth County the first and only independent, all-girls high school in the area. Trinity Hall has quickly become one of the leading schools in Central New Jersey, boasting a diverse student body of more than 300 students from three counties and more than 50 cities.

MISSION HISTORY

Trinity Hall is an independent, all-girls school that educates and empowers young women in the Catholic tradition through an innovative college preparatory program grounding in our four core values of leadership, respect, perseverance and faith. Trinity Hall prepares each student to achieve her full potential as she embraces her place in the world.

CORE VALUES

Trinity Hall students...

Commit to leadership by taking responsibility and initiative, serving as courageous, confident and considerate role-models who lead with passion and vision.

Understand the importance of respect in regard to their community, each other and themselves. They act with dignity, loyalty, justice, pride and compassion.

Exhibit perseverance by overcoming challenges to achieve success and by viewing failures as necessary learning experiences. They are persistent and determined to push beyond obstacles to meet goals.

Embrace and demonstrate their faith in God, which forms the basis for their relationship within the community. Their faith-based education lets them celebrate their differences, accept each other and serve others in need.

6 8 10 ALUMNAE SPOTLIGHT MASS OF DEDICATION AND BLESSING OF GMELICH HALL FUNDRAISING AT TRINITY HALL

21 22 32 LEADING LADIES LUNCHEON THE CLASS OF 2023 GRADUATION CEREMONY

Thank you to Tamara Gillon Photography, Lynn Retterer and Chloe Toole for providing the photographs in the Trinity Hall 2022-2023 Annual Report.

TRINITY HALL ALUMNAE SPOTLIGHT

Liszeth Rodriguez, Class of 2017

FIRST PROFESSIONAL ALUMNA WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP SPEAKER AT TRINITY HALL

In March of 2023, Liszeth Rodriguez ’17 returned to Trinity Hall as the school’s first professional alumna Women in Leadership speaker, sharing her journey from high school to her role as engineer at Clark Construction Group in Washington, DC. Liszeth graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 2021 from Lafayette College after discovering her passion for design and engineering while taking engineering classes at Trinity Hall. As part of the field operations team she spent most of her day on construction sites, inspecting the progress of projects and solving problems as they arose. Liszeth spoke to the importance of staying confident and using her voice, even when she was at times the only woman in the room. She advised current students to take advantage of opportunities that are available to them in high school and college, to embrace challenges and to have fun.

Alexa Sadowski, Class of 2020

UTILIZED EXPERIENCE FROM ECONOMICS AND POLICY STUDIES MAJORS TO CREATE ANALYSES FOR THE NEW JERSEY TREASURY

Alexa Sadowski ’20 put her economics and policy studies majors to use when she worked for the Office of Economic Revenue and Analysis at the New Jersey Treasury over the summer. She worked on a variety of projects, including reports on the housing market and how the end of the student loan payment pause would affect consumer spending.

Alexa spent considerable time writing fiscal analyses which detailed losses or gains in tax revenue for the state of New Jersey based on proposed legislation. She found the experience rewarding – the analyses she wrote were sent to the Office of Legislative Services and helped inform decisions about tax policies. Her reports included analysis of the affects of removing the sales tax on baby products, pet supplies and medicine as well as the effects of a tax break for farmers who donate produce to local food banks. Working backwards to finds ways of presenting the data in a way that would effectively produce estimates was a challenge, but Alexa found it helped her to put her research skills to use. She also credited her classes at Trinity Hall for her strong problem-solving and analytical skills. It was because of the emphasis placed on those skills that she felt confident enough to create estimates for the Treasury without being given many directions or parameters.

Morgan Kogan, Class of 2021

INTERNED WITH CONGRESSMAN CHRIS SMITH IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

Morgan Kogan spent the spring and summer as a legislative intern and staff assistant in Washington, D.C. on Capitol Hill with Congressman Chris Smith. She interacted with hundreds of constituents every day, researching legislation and exploring the halls of Congress. She participated in a program with the Stennis Center for Public Service that allowed her to practice various policy simulations.

Morgan credits Trinity Hall with instilling in her a sense of confidence that led her to pursue opportunities like her internship. Being pushed to take risks by both her teachers and classmates also helped her to navigate being “comfortably uncomfortable” while trying new things. “I was incredibly lucky to serve my New Jersey community on the Hill,” Morgan says. “My internship was an experience I will never forget.”.

Molly Clifford, Class of 2020

GAINED REAL-WORLD NURSING EXPERIENCE THROUGH EXTERNSHIP AT RIVERVIEW MEDICAL CENTER

During her time at the University of Michigan, Molly Clifford was exposed to a variety of clinical settings that drew her to a career in nursing. But it was her externship through Hackensack Meridian Health at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, New Jersey that gave her the real-world experience that she will draw upon as she pursues a career as an emergency room nurse.

During Molly’s externship, she worked 12 hour shifts, three days a week for ten weeks alongside an experienced nursing staff and physicians who guided her through the fast-paced environment of a hospital emergency department. Programs like hers are highly desirable positions for incoming senior nursing students, and Molly felt her experience was incredibly rewarding because she was able to help many patients, each with a range of ailments.

Molly’s time at Trinity Hall provided for her a strong foundational knowledge in sciences and helped to establish work and study habits that were instrumental to her success in nursing school. The collaborative learning environment gave her a skillset that was applicable to all areas of learning, from her classroom clinical rotations to her externship, and taught her how to persevere in times of great challenge.

MASS OF DEDICATION AND BLESSING OF

Gmelich Hall

On September 16, 2022 the Trinity Hall community gathered to celebrate co-founders Victoria and Justin Gmelich P’17, ‘21, ‘23, ‘24 with a Mass of dedication and blessing of Gmelich Hall. During his homily Father Peter Donohue said,

“You must dig down to create a foundation deep enough to support what you are willing to build.”

TRINITY HALL WAS BUILT BY A SMALL GROUP OF BELIEVERS, ONE BRICK AT A TIME. AS WE CELEBRATE THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF OUR FOUNDING, WE THANK THE GMELICHS FOR THEIR STEADFAST SUPPORT.

FUNDRAISING AT TRINITY HALL

The generosity of the Trinity Hall community allows us to create opportunities that empower unstoppable students. Each individual’s donation is critical to the sustainability and longevity of the school, and high participation among all constituencies shows that our community believes in our mission.

OTHER FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGNS

Your support of Trinity Hall through charitable gifts, volunteer opportunities and fundraising events is important as a key member of the school community. The Fund for Trinity Hall is an annual campaign, but as new needs arise at the school, new campaigns are created to address those needs. Here are other ways in which you can help Trinity Hall continue to flourish:

Mary’s Fund for the Girls: Now and Forever

In June of 2021, Trinity Hall Founding Head of School Mary Sciarrillo retired after nearly 30 years in all-girls education. It was Mary’s wish to make a Trinity Hall education accessible to families at all income levels. Mary’s Fund for the Girls: Now and Forever, a financial aid and endowment fund, was started in Mary’s honor to ensure that her legacy would live on in an impactful way.

It was a beautiful day as over 100 golfers gathered at the Navesink Country Club followed by a festive dinner attended by members of Trinity Hall’s leadership team, board members, current and alumnae parents, incoming parents and friends. Over $40,000 was raised for the capital campaign in support of campus expansion and enhancement initiatives.

GRADUATION CEREMONY CLASS of 2023

INVOCATION

An excerpt from the prayer written and read by Reese Jones, Class of 2023 Salutatorian. Reese is a member of the University of Virginia Class of 2027.

...Gracious Lord, as we look onto the horizon and prepare to part with the Class of 2023 as we step into a new and exciting chapter of our life story, grant us your love, your wisdom, and most importantly your guidance. Allow us to hold each other close to our hearts in spite of the impending distance between us. Give us the fortitude to embody the core values Trinity Hall has instilled in us: leadership, respect, perseverance and faith... Amen.

VALEDICTORIAN ADDRESS

An excerpt from the valedictory address given by Isabelle Darman. Isabelle is a member of the Georgetown University Class of 2027.

Welcome, trustees, faculty, staff, family and friends. Thank you for being here to celebrate the accomplishments of the Trinity Hall Class of 2023! Though it’s been a long road, and I am sure we all had moments where we thought we would not make it, here we are.

As excited as I am to be here to celebrate all of our accomplishments, this is definitely a bitter-sweet day; as exciting as college sounds, leaving behind the familiar is scary. Throughout our years at Trinity Hall, and especially these last few weeks, we have all had to say goodbye to one thing or another:

• To classes that in time we began to love because of our unique bond with our classmates due to all of the challenges we weathered together.

• To our advisory, after all being thrown together completely randomly.

• Or, today: our final goodbye as Trinity Hall students.

As much as I would like to say that all of these goodbyes are equally difficult, today is definitely the hardest of all.

It’s not even saying goodbye to all of our friends that is the hard part. We all know our friends will remain our friends, and that come Monday, our group chats will be buzzing about plans for the upcoming week. I especially have been dreading saying goodbye to the people I sat next to in class all year. People who, without the randomness of our schedules, I might not have spoken to. That was the real magic of high school: no matter how demanding a class, by sitting next to someone new or different, we could laugh through anything and always be encouraged to work a little harder. I am very grateful for this randomness and - as fun as it made class - I also think it’s amazing how these people have become some of my hardest goodbyes.

One particular group of girls that comes to mind is my AP Lit class this year. By answering our questions of the day and Ms. Sierra’s begrudging willingness to sometimes let those questions guide our discussions for the remainder of the period, we all grew close - and it was all by chance. On the last day of class, MS. Sierra read us a poem called “the Lesson of the Moth” by Don Marquis…I would like to think that all of us have a little bit of both moths inside of us: the one who’s a little timid and afraid, and the one who will do anything for what she wants. Our time at Trinity Hall has taught us to listen to that second moth a little bit more, to be a little more courageous and to want a little more for ourselves.

…I think our time together has made us part of something bigger and more beautiful. At Trinity Hall, in any classroom we walked into, we were surrounded by really smart students, who were also kind and welcoming. Being a part of Trinity Hall involved taking time out of our busy schedules to help each other with homework, always saying “hi” in the hallway or even just trusting in one another enough to share an embarrassing story during class. All of these small encounters gave us courage to be ourselves.

As we grew together, we realized these subtle moments of community taught us that for one of us to succeed, we all had to succeed. We each cared about our own success - and we cared about one another’s as well…

I hope we can all take the best parts of Trinity Hall and our sisterhood with us to our next adventure…Whether it’s simply helping a future classmate with homework, remembering our capabilities and having the courage to take up space and to speak openly in a classroom full of boys, or dedicating ourselves to our academic passions, by being part of the class of 2023 at Trinity Hall, we were all changed for good.

…I would like to thank my fellow classmates for all of their help along the way, and for their hard work that inspired me to keep pushing forward. Thank you to

• Our teachers for never letting us give up and pushing us to be our best.

• Our parents, who we can never find appropriate words to thank for all they have done for us over the years.

• Our siblings for always being there to provide a moment of levity at home when life at school is a little too much.

• Every family member, friend or anyone else in the audience for your unwavering support throughout our time at Trinity Hall.

Even though our time at Trinity Hall was not without …we all became significant parts of each other’s lives and pushed each other to grow into the incredible women we are today. We know that supporting those around us involves giving of ourselves - and we know our generosity is always worth it. We also know that the impact of our education at Trinity Hall will never leave us…

Thank you all for letting me be a part of something beautiful. I know it was all worth it.

COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS

Father Peter Donohue became the 32nd president of Villanova University on June 1, 2006. Here is an excerpt from his commencement address to Trinity Hall’s seventh graduating class:

…Four years ago, you started a journey. It was a journey filled with apprehension and excitement. But your generation faced challenges that no one could have imagined…You have been demonstrating your resilience from the start and have succeeded. You have balanced home, school, activities, athletics and even won a few championships along the way. You found your place at Trinity Hall: in the classrooms and science labs, on the fields, courts, track and pool, in the arts, music and theatre, serving the greater good and making friendships that will stand the test of time...

Although this part of your journey is coming to an end, a new one is beginning. Once again it is filled with apprehension, excitement and promise. You may not know what to expect, but you are women who have been empowered with a Trinity Hall education. Don’t be afraid of the future…Trinity Hall has transformed you and prepared you with a foundation for success, no matter what path you follow…

In 1956, my family experienced an event that people would classify as tragic. My younger sister, Denise, was stricken with viral encephalitis…This event changed our lives, but what for many would seem tragic, my sister taught us more than we ever taught her. She reminded us how important it was to see the world through different eyes. St.

Matthew’s writes: “I assure you unless you change and become like little children you will not enter the kingdom of God” (Matthew 18: 2-4).

Whenever I read this gospel passage, I think of Denise…Often, we are caught up in our adult world. Being around Denise was a constant reminder of what was important…We would classify Denise and other like her, as intellectually disabled…but in my experience her life was far richer than anything we can hope to understand. We allow the things of this world - schedules, calendars, material possessions, political and religious viewpoints - to disable us from becoming what we are called to be, what we are called to become…Denise was a child of forty-one years who taught my family to live in a world of imagination. Our family energy whirled around her, and while it was challenging work, she illuminated us daily. She was a gift that we were called to share every day, to spotlight people rather than material things or ourselves.

…The night after her death, I went into Denise’s room and sat on her bed…I looked around the room. Most people would have been overwhelmed by the décor. There was not an ounce of wall that did not have a picture of a person. Pictures of people she liked or had met, sometimes only once. Anyone who came into our house had to have a Polaroid picture taken with her, and those photographs plastered her room. She dated each picture and remembered the person…She was passionate about people. If you are around children, you see that quality, and somehow, we lose that quality we once possessed. But Denise

never did. She always called us to be concerned about people, to value them for who they were…

There was a time she came to visit when I was in my doctoral program at the University of Illinois… She brought half her house; she took over my apartment. When I showed my office/guest room, it wasn’t to her liking. The furniture needed to be rearranged the way she liked it. I was beginning to get frustrated and annoyed. The bed had to be over by the window. For that to happen, I would have to move a large bookcase. She insisted, “It must be over here, or I won’t stay.”

Well, I moved everything. I got the bed by the window and said, “OK, are you happy?” “Yes,” she replied. “I count the stars and I know it will be a good day.”

…I pray that as Trinity Hall graduates you will continue to serve and find ways to empower people.
THAT OTHERS COUNT ON IN THE DARKNESS OF THEIR LIVES AND MAKE EACH DAY FOR THEM
Become the stars a good day.
Congratulations and God bless.

FOUNDERS’ AWARD

Visionary founders Mairead and Sean Clifford and Victoria and Justin Gmelich established Trinity Hall to offer girls in Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean counties an academically rigorous single-sex option for their high school years.

As the Mission states: “Trinity Hall is an independent, all-girls school that educates and empowers young women in the Catholic tradition through an innovative college preparatory program grounded in our four core values of leadership, respect, perseverance and faith. Trinity Hall prepares each student to achieve her full potential as she embraces her place in the world.”

This Award given by the Trinity Hall Board of Trustees seeks to recognize a member(s) of the community whose commitment to the success of Trinity Hall mirrors the dedication of the Founders.

This year the Founders’ Award is given posthumously to: Allison Berry Wagner

ALLISON BERRY WAGNER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Allison Berry Wagner Scholarship Fund was launched in August of 2022 to honor former board member Allison Berry Wagner P’26.

As a founding member of Trinity Hall’s Board of Trustees, she was instrumental in the establishment of the school in its earliest years. She believed in the transformative power of education and worked tirelessly in support of Trinity Hall so that girls in Monmouth, Ocean and Middlesex counties could have the option of an all-girls college preparatory school.

To honor her legacy, the Berry and Wagner families created the Allison Berry Wagner Scholarship Program. An inaugural group of four students received a $1,000 scholarship award in June 2023. Recipients were chosen based on their demonstration of Allison’s enduring qualities of commitment, service, perseverance and positivity.
