Are you looking to study a subject which will really allow your career to take off? According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (1997), the 21st Century will be dominated by three main industries; telecommunications, IT and tourism. This is now becoming reality with the travel and tourism industry reporting 500% growth over the past 25 years. The Tourism Alliance UK Statistics 2014 show that tourism has been one of the UK’s great success stories over the past 5 years. The sector has continued to grow despite the recession, meaning it is now the UK’s 5th largest export earner generating £24bn per annum whilst domestic tourism is worth £78bn. As a result, according to Skills Council (2014), Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism is now the 3rd largest employment sector in the UK, with tourism related employment accounting for 3.1m jobs which is more than 10% of the UK workforce. Careers Wales (2015) state that there are currently 10,500 hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism businesses throughout Wales, but that the industry faces a skills gap with finding high calibre, capable staff to fill skilled roles… as the sector grows. Furthermore, according to State of the Nation (2011), it is expected that an additional 2,200 management jobs will be created in Wales, further increasing the demand for high level specialist graduates. The Events sector is a vital and fast growing section of the tourism industry which, according to MPI’s UK Economic Impact Survey (2013), is worth £58.4bn, exceeding all forecasts. With the excitement generated by events such as the London 2012 Olympics, Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, Celtic Manor Summit and Rugby World Cup 2015 as well as a range of music, cultural and heritage festivals and community events this is an exciting and fast developing subject to study. If you have a passion for Tourism, Hospitality or Events, would like the opportunity to travel the world, or work locally, then why not plan your future and study a subject you will enjoy! All sectors of the leisure industries are currently seeking the managers of the future, so why not study a programme at university which will allow you to develop the communication, guest service, management and organisational skills that the industry needs and really make sure your career takes off!

“The course was very beneficial. What we learnt in lectures we took out on placement, and what we learnt on placement we took back into lectures. It was an invaluable experience. UWTSD Swansea Leisure Graduate Ewan Rees is now Sales Director at Yas Viceroy Hotel and managing events at The Abu Dhabi Formula 1.

A world of opportunities Study Tourism, Hospitality and Events at UWTSD Swansea The University’s charter is the oldest in Wales, and the programmes offered by Swansea’s School of Tourism and Hospitality have an excellent tradition and industry reputation built over the past 25 years. During this time we are proud to have developed an exciting range of cutting edge courses with a strong international flavour and local focus that prepares our students to become the industry leaders of the future. Swansea is an exciting and dynamic city with superb leisure facilities and an excellent social life for students. Our city centre campus provides easy access to the train station, halls of residences and Swansea’s renowned nightlife, as well as the superb sports facilities we utilise at the LC. As a premier league city, the success of Swansea City FC provides superb case studies and our close links with the Swans and Ospreys enables us to base some of our modules at the impressive Liberty Stadium and work closely with Parc Y Scarlets. What better way to study events than to be based at a major venue, with the opportunity to experience behind the scenes action and discuss key management issues from an insider perspective? Swansea is surrounded by areas of outstanding natural beauty which lend themselves to tourism. The wonderful beaches of the Gower Peninsula and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park are a haven for surf and water sports enthusiasts, whilst the Brecon Beacons are a paradise for adventure tourism. Wales and Swansea have strong traditions as events and tourism destinations, supported by the rich cultural heritage of Welsh Eisteddfods and the Urdd, along with close proximity to Cardiff, a key venue for the 2012 Olympics and the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Many of our students secure highly relevant part time work at the Liberty Stadium, Parc Y Scarlets, Millennium Stadium, SWALEC Stadium and Ffos Las Race Course as well as local hotels and tourist attractions. Our links have also enabled students the opportunity to become involved in the international Iron Man Wales as well as other community and regional events. The University has an active Student Union with a range of sports teams, clubs and societies with Fresher’s Fortnight and the Varsity being the highlights of the year. Our programmes have also set up their own societies and our students frequently become involved in organising student events, which along with organised placements, provide excellent career experience for your CV. 4 | www.uwtsd.ac.uk

Student Support/ Cost of Living/ Accommodation The School of Tourism and Hospitality is a small department driven by a team who pride ourselves on knowing our students individually and building close relationships. We are therefore able to provide you with a highly supportive and high quality teaching and learning environment which will stimulate and challenge you. In 2014, one of our students was runner up in the National Travel and Tourism Student of the Year Award, whilst another was voted Young Tourism Ambassador for Tourism Swansea Bay. Starting at university and moving away from home is often an unsettling experience, however to help you settle in we will offer you the chance to have a ‘buddy’, who will be a student trained to provide you with support when you are starting out on your university life with us. As well as a Year Tutor, you will also have a Personal Tutor throughout your time at university to provide additional support when needed. We work hard to provide a supportive environment in which to study by operating an ‘open door policy’ and running tutorials so there is always someone available to help you. Swansea is renowned as an exciting and vibrant student city, but also benefits from plenty of relevant part time employment opportunities and a low cost of living. Halls of residence costs range from approximately £2,390£2,620, whilst private accommodation varies from £2,720-£5,560 meaning our students have more money available to enjoy themselves and make the most of the opportunities available whilst at university.

Staff regularly volunteer at key events such as Hay Festival and Iron Man Wales, and work as representatives on tourism advisory panels, sports governing bodies and as external examiners at other universities to ensure parity of academic standards. Many are actively involved in research and regularly present at international industry and academic conferences. This results in real life research being used within lectures, as well as ensuring our programmes remain industry focused and up to date.
