Swansea

Lampeter
Founded in 1853, the Swansea campuses have a reputation for innovative industryled and career-driven programmes. Our Swansea campus is spread across a number of dedicated centres – all within easy reach of the city centre. Each subject area has its own facilities with access to specialist equipment, learning resources, workshops and IT suites.
Founded in 1848, the Carmarthen campus is a lively, friendly environment, centred on its original 1848 building. The campus boasts a range of facilities including a wellstocked library, a fully equipped theatre and workshops, music, media and IT suites and modern teaching spaces.
Founded in 1822, the historic Lampeter campus is home to the first Higher Education institution in Wales. It now combines a historic academic tradition with all the modern facilities and technology necessary for 21st century learning. Set in an idyllic rural location, our Lampeter campus provides a closeknit student experience in a supportive community environment.

• An Inclusive Education. We believe strongly that higher education should be available to all those who will benefit from it and welcome students from a wide range of backgrounds and circumstances.
• Friendly Campus Communities. Students are at the heart of everything we do and small, close-knit campus communities mean that you’ll settle in and feel at home really quickly.
• Flexible Study. We understand that many of our students have to balance their education with other commitments, that’s why most courses can be studied part-time through flexible delivery.
• A World of Opportunity. Our student mix is extremely diverse and includes all ages and backgrounds as well as students from more than 30 countries around the world.
• There for You. We are committed to helping you succeed. You can arrange to see staff at any time during the term for advice and support.
Part-time and Flexible
Study your way We understand that students studying part-time face certain challenges but we believe that you can take these in your stride with the right support. The courses listed in this booklet are all designed so that they can be studied alongside work or other commitments. In addition to the courses listed here, most of our courses that are available full-time can also be studied on a part-time basis. The difference is that classes and seminars are timetabled during the day and attendance times depend on the particular subjects selected. For more information about taking a full-time course as a parttime student please see our full-time prospectus, visit our website or contact us (details on page 26).
“Part-time study is great because it allows you to have a career, and then, along the road, it allows you to extend your qualifications, which can only help further that career – Jamie Lean, BEng, MSc

Online and
Distance Learning Our distance learning courses allow you to study in the comfort of your own home using our virtual learning environment. You will still have regular access to your tutors via email and phone and will be able to access all course content and materials as e:resources. These could include audio files, videos and other interactive materials as well as online seminars and lectures. Don’t worry if you don’t feel confident in using IT systems as our support staff can talk you through everything you need to know. For all Higher Education courses that are studied online we recommend 10 hours of study per credit, this can be a combination of self-directed learning, research work or participation in online tutorials.

What do our students think about
Distance Learning with UWTSD? “I had been away from formal study for some time and had not studied at postgraduate level so my expectations were general interest, challenge, new areas - and it has met these expectations well. This was the best distance learning course I could find in terms of the modules it offered and UWTSD has experience in distance learning study…The best things about the course are the module content, essay feedback and prompt and supportive emails from the tutor."
“I teach history and philosophy at a small American university, and my approach is to make students feel as welcome as possible. When necessary, I accommodate their unique circumstances so that they have every chance to succeed in their coursework. UWTSD seemed to exemplify that same approach. It felt like it would be a good fit for me and so it has proved to be!” Carrie Bates, PG Cert Latin New York, USA
“The curriculum looked challenging, but interesting and the discussions with staff prior to application were informative and supportive. The institution appeared to understand the challenges of postgraduate distance learning. All of this made UWTSD and MA Philosophy natural choices.” Martin Whitworth, MA Philosophy, Banbury, UK
Anna Wells, MA Medieval Studies Melbourne, Australia

Making part-time study work for you
A student’s view
Name: Jamie Lean Highest Qualification: MSc Lean and Agile Manufacturing Current Role: Asset Management Improvement Manager, Tata Steel
12 | www.uwtsd.ac.uk
Why did you choose the MSc Course at UWTSD?
the support from the staff is just well above and beyond what is expected.
I studied for my Bachelor of Engineering degree here at the university and it seemed like a natural progression to carry on with the master’s course. One of the modules I undertook as part of the bachelor’s course was lean manufacturing. It really struck a chord with me. I saw a lot of value and cohesion with my workplace in much of the ethos and ideals behind it.
How did you find part-time study and would you recommend it?
The reason I continued with my education here at the university really was down to the staff, the level of support I received during my bachelor’s degree, continued into my master’s degree. On an academic and on a sometimes personal level also,
Part-time study is great because it allows you to have a career, and then, whatever that career is, along that road, it allows you to extend your academic qualifications, which can only help further in that career. Full-time study was never an option because I was already fully employed. I had a young family at the time as well and just after starting the course we found out that we were expecting another baby, so it was very difficult. Time management is absolutely critical doing a course like this,
as it would be in any situation. I think that’s heightened when you have a young family to look after and obviously you are working full-time. It is doable and it is a challenge, but it was a challenge I relished and obviously managed to succeed in.
Since starting the course have you seen changes in your career? It certainly opened doors that were at least closed prior to my completing the course, if they would indeed have been available to myself in the first place. It’s been a definite benefit to my career. I think there is a level of respect that comes with achieving that level of qualification. It is certainly reflected back in the workplace.
What are your lasting impressions of your time here at university? I think for myself, it’s quite a personal thought, my Higher Education studies have seen me involved with the institute for over a decade and I think during those times you build up bonds I think that go slightly beyond the student-teacher relationship that would naturally evolve. There are people within this institute I would consider to be friends now, not just lecturer or a teacher of some kind. As I said, they say your staff are your greatest assets and I think that is as true of this place as anywhere else I have gone to in the past. Some would say they are simply doing their job but for me personally I owe them a debt of gratitude.

Humanities and Performing Arts The Faculty comprises two parts, Performing Arts and Humanities. Within the Humanities there are four schools: the School of Archaeology; History and Anthropology; the School of Classics; the School of Cultural Studies; and, the School of Theology, Religious Studies and Islamic Studies. The Faculty has a principle of collaborative learning and prides itself on the friendly and supportive environment that it has created. This culture of collaboration and support is also enjoyed by the large number of distance learners who study with us from as far afield as Canada, Australia and the Middle East. Many of the Faculty’s Postgraduate courses can be studied at a distance, this gives you the flexibility to study in your own time and at a pace that suits you. All distance learners have access to our online learning

platform ‘Moodle’ and are allocated a personal tutor who will support you throughout your studies. For students who study with us parttime via distance learning, the minimum number of modules you need to study is two per year. Most MAs consist of six, 20-credit modules and a 60credit dissertation. If you are interested in studying the Humanities but don’t have any previous qualifications, you may be interested in our Gateway to Humanities course. It is an inclusive programme designed to open the doors of Higher Education to those who may not have the necessary qualifications to apply to other undergraduate programmes. The course is designed to introduce you to the Humanities
subjects and prepare you for study at Higher Education level. Upon successful completion of the course you can gain a Certificate of Higher Education or continue on to a full honours degree.

Entry
Requirements Every application is considered on its own merit, so places may be offered on the basis of non-standard entry qualifications and criteria, including maturity, professional qualifications and relevant experience. Applicants with non-standard qualifications are advised to submit a short curriculum vitae with their application form.
Undergraduate courses
Postgraduate courses
For undergraduate courses standard entry requirements are linked to a points-based system that gives a numerical value to previous qualifications. There are many different types of qualification, such as GCSEs, A-Levels and BTECs, that can be used to gain entry to a course. A full list of qualifications and their points can be found at:
The normal entry requirements for admission to a taught postgraduate programme is an honours degree (ideally 2:1 or above) or equivalent in an appropriate discipline. The normal entrance requirement for applicants for research degrees is an upper second class honours degree or a Master's degree relevant to the proposed research project awarded by a UK or other recognised University or higher education institution, or by the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA). Further details of entrance requirements should be discussed with your admissions tutor.

Qualifications
There are many different types of qualification available within the UK Education system which can be confusing. For example, an A to C grade at GCSE is considered to be a level 2 qualification whereas a PhD or Doctorate is a level 8 qualification. The list below is not exhaustive but does contain some of the most well-known qualifications, for further information visit: www.gov.uk/what-differentqualification-levels-mean/overview
