Editor’s Note GOING BEYOND “SELF”!

On October 22, 2012, Hurricane Sandy ravaged the Caribbean island of Jamaica and quickly made its way to Cuba, Bahamas, Canada and the United States. Sandy’s path of destruction left many without heat, electricity and hot water for several weeks. With the loss of electricity, gas stations, banks, shopping malls and restaurants were closed for over a week. Many lost their homes and it is undetermined when those persons will begin to feel a sense of normalcy. While we were all focused on the horrific damage caused by Sandy, there was another pressing matter that needed our undivided attention and that was the November 6, 2012 Presidential Election. While it was important for us to resume our daily schedules, it was equally important for us to vote for the next President of the United States. And so we did. President Barack Obama secured another four years in the White House with a win of 332 Electoral votes (270 to win) scoring critical wins in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Ohio and Florida. With these major milestones that happened within three weeks of each other and just before Thanksgiving, it is a reminder that we have so much to be thankful for. Until Hurricane Sandy, so many of us hadn’t realize how much we take for granted, e.g. being able to purchase gasoline without having to join a line that went on for miles, charging our electronics, having heat, hot water and food. It brings to mind the truthfulness of the saying “you never realize what you have until it’s gone!” In the wake of the holiday season many will remain without a roof over their head and I have to ask, is it not our responsibility to assist in whatever way we can? Are we not supposed to bear one another’s burdens? I employ you to please do something to help someone in need – every little bit counts. Visit www.fema.gov or www.redcross.org to donate or volunteer. As I close, I would like to thank all of our readers for your unwavering support. Because of you, we are stepping into our second year and in doing so we are cultivating new partnerships that will assist in taking the magazine to new heights. The team and I feel a tremendous sense of responsibility to make this venture into something that we can all be proud of and give thanks for. I pray that you continue to share your time with us. We remain aware of the fact that you can opt to read any publication on newsstands, however you make a choice to support us every month. And as long as you will have us, we will continue to be your eyes and ears for all things entertainment. Please have a Happy Holiday. Whatever you do, be safe. Until January, sit back, relax and enjoy our gift to you – the combined November/December 2012 issue.

Here’s what Condé Nast Traveler has to say about Island Outpost properties: Like a close-knit family of wildly attractive, intelligent and anarchic kids, they are utterly independent and quite impossible to separate from one another. But something they have all inherited is Blackwell’s easy charm, his amused and iconoclastic view of the world, his sense of fun and style, his instinct for beauty. THANKSGIVING/CHRISTMAS PRAISES! By Dr. Manning–Fontaine

W

e are people living in a land of plenty in which there are always left-overs. When I dine out and the servings are larger than I can consume, I will request a take home bag or as I like to call it a go box. It has become my preference to have the waiter/waitress bring it to me so that I can fix my own leftovers. I no longer allow him/her take my plate away. Why? I was once in the steak house of an exclusive hotel chain in Chicago and couldn’t finish a succulent, cooked just right, slide down your throat 24 ounce Wisconsin steak and I made the foolish mistake of having the waiter take it away to bag it for the road. Fifteen minutes and no steak later, I asked where it was. Apologetically he advised that it had accidentally gotten thrown away but he would bring another steak to take its place. You guessed it - the replacement was meat of a lesser quality nowhere near that of the piece that had gotten discarded. Some people don’t like left overs and refuse to eat them; but leftovers can be something to get excited about. Leftovers mean that you’ve received more than enough, that you’ve been blessed beyond where you thought you would be both of which ought to lead to a private praise party. We are in fact coming upon the season that gives the opportunity and the occasion to engage in such acts of thanksgiving. As I write this issue’s inspirational column, we are six days beyond the close of one of the most heated Presidential races in Election history, Obama/Romney. As far as I was concerned, we already had the President we needed - just one woman’s opinion but the political gods demand serving so we were off to the races. Regardless of who became President, I believe we had a few “leftovers” from the Obama administra-

tion for which we needed to say thank you before they were “accidentally” thrown away. What are these leftovers? Glad you asked! Here are just a few. Wrap them up, take them home and savor them. PASSED HEALTH CARE REFORM: After five Presidents over a century failed to create universal health insurance, the Affordable Care Act was signed in 2010. It will cover 32 million uninsured Americans beginning in 2014 and mandates a suite of experimental measures to cut health care cost growth, the number one cause of America’s long-term fiscal problems. PASSED THE STIMULUS: Creating a total of nearly 3.7 million new private-sector jobs. PASSED WALL STREET REFORM: To crack down on abusive lending products and companies. ENDED THE WAR IN IRAQ: Ordered all U.S. military forces out of the country. Last troops left on December 18, 2011. BEGAN DRAWDOWN OF WAR IN AFGHANISTAN: According to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, the combat mission there will be over by next year. ELIMINATED OSAMA BIN LADEN: In 2011, ordered special forces raid of secret compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, in which the terrorist leader was killed and a trove of al-Qaeda documents was discovered. TURNED AROUND U.S. AUTO INDUSTRY: In 2011, the Big Three automakers all gained market share for the first time in two decades. RECAPITALIZED BANKS: In the midst of financial crisis got banks back on their feet at essentially zero cost to the government. TOPPLED MOAMMAR GADDAFI: In March 2011 joined forces with other operatives ending Gaddafi’s fortytwo-year rule when the dictator was overthrown and killed by rebels on October 20, 2011. No American lives were lost. TOLD MUBARAK TO GO: On February 1, 2011, publicly called on Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to accept reform or step down, thus weakening the dictator’s position and putting America on the right side of the Arab Spring. Mubarak ended thirty-year rule when overthrown on February 11. REVERSED BUSH TORTURE POLICIES: Two days after taking office, nullified Bush-era rulings that had allowed detainees in U.S. custody to undergo certain “enhanced” interrogation techniques considered inhumane under the Geneva Conventions. Also released the secret Bush legal rulings supporting the use of these techniques. Issue 14 | Nov - Dec 2012 11

IMPROVED AMERICA’S IMAGE ABROAD: With new policies, diplomacy, and rhetoric, reversed a sharp decline in world opinion toward the U.S. (and the corresponding loss of “soft power”) during the Bush years. KICKED BANKS OUT OF FEDERAL STUDENT LOAN PROGRAM, EXPANDED PELL GRANT SPENDING: As part of the 2010 health care reform bill, signed measure ending the wasteful decades-old practice of subsidizing banks to provide college loans. Starting July 2010 all students began getting their federal student loans directly from the federal government. Treasury will save $67 billion over ten years, $36 billion of which will go to expanding Pell Grants to lower-income students. CREATED RACE TO THE TOP: With funds from stimulus, started $4.35 billion program of competitive grants to encourage and reward states for education reform. BOOSTED FUEL EFFICIENCY STANDARDS: Released new fuel efficiency standards in 2011 that will nearly double the fuel economy for cars and trucks by 2025. COORDINATED INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE TO FINANCIAL CRISIS: To keep world economy out of recession in 2009 and 2010. Helped secure from G-20 nations more than $500 billion for the IMF to provide lines of credit and other support to emerging market countries, which kept them liquid and avoided crises with their currencies. PASSED MINI STIMULI: To help families hurt by the recession and spur the economy as stimulus spending declined. Signed series of measures (July 22, 2010; December 17, 2010; December 23, 2011) to extend unemployment insurance and cut payroll taxes. BEGAN ASIA “PIVOT”: In 2011, reoriented American military and diplomatic priorities and focus from the Middle East and Europe to the Asian-Pacific region. Executed multipronged strategy of positively engaging China while reasserting U.S. leadership in the region by increasing American military presence and crafting new commercial, diplomatic, and military alliances with neighboring countries made uncomfortable by recent Chinese behavior. INCREASED SUPPORT FOR VETERANS: With so many soldiers coming home from Iraq and Iran with serious physical and mental health problems, yet facing long waits for services, increased 2010 Department of Veterans Affairs budget by 16 percent and 2011 budget by 10 percent. Also signed new GI bill offering $78 billion in tuition assistance over a decade and provided multiple tax credits to encourage businesses to hire veterans. TIGHTENED SANCTIONS ON IRAN: In effort to deter Iran’s nuclear program, signed Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act (2010) to punish firms and individuals who aid Iran’s petroleum sector. In late 2011 and early 2012, coordinated with other major Western powers to impose sanctions aimed at Iran’s banks and with Japan, South Korea, and China to shift their oil purchases away from Iran.

CREATED CONDITIONS TO BEGIN CLOSING DIRTIEST POWER PLANTS: New EPA restrictions on mercury and toxic pollution, issued in December 2011, likely to lead to the closing of between sixty-eight and 231 of the nation’s oldest and dirtiest coal-fired power plants. Estimated cost to utilities: at least $11 billion by 2016. Estimated health benefits: $59 billion to $140 billion. Will also significantly reduce carbon emissions and, with other regulations, comprises what’s been called Obama’s “stealth climate policy.” PASSED CREDIT CARD REFORMS: Signed the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure Act (2009), which prohibits credit card companies from raising rates without advance notification, mandates a grace period on interest rate increases and strictly limits overdraft and other fees. ELIMINATED CATCH-22 IN PAY EQUALITY LAWS: Signed Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in 2009, giving women who are paid less than men for the same work the right to sue their employers after they find out about the discrimination, even if that discrimination happened years ago. Under previous law, as interpreted by the Supreme Court in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., the statute of limitations on such suits ran out 180 days after the alleged discrimination occurred, even if the victims never knew about it. PROTECTED TWO LIBERAL SEATS ON THE U.S. SUPREME COURT: Nominated and obtained confirmation for Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic and third woman to serve, in 2009; and Elena Kagan, the fourth woman to serve, in 2010. They replaced David Souter and John Paul Stevens, respectively. Barack Obama has become this country and the world’s Christmas gift again this year. Let us be thankful for the tasty tidbits left behind by the first four years and look forward to the blessings of the next four years; as together we sing Gloria in Excelsis Deo. HAPPY HOLIDAYS ONE AND ALL!

AND THEN THERE WERE TWO! KEVIN EDWARDS AND CRAIG JACKSON OF THE CHART TOPPING REGGAE GROUP, VOICEMAIL, OPEN UP ABOUT THE DEATH OF O’NEIL EDWARDS, THEIR NEW ALBUM AND MORE.

By Jody-Ann Williams Photos by D. Andy Photography

Issue 14 | Nov - Dec 2012 15

“Heyeeee” & “You’ve got mailVoicemail” are the two intro trademarks that cannot go unnoticed by anyone who is familiar with the super dancehall group Voicemail. The group provided the dancehall scene with some of the most unforgettable dance tracks such as “Wacky Dip”, “Ready to Party”, “Weddy Time” and many more. The group started out with five members but by 2003 that number dwindled down to three - Craig Jackson, Kevin Edwards and O’Neil Edwards. With their dynamic sense of style the group has never limited their music to just one particular genre. Since the very beginning, the group has made it their duty to grow musically. From reggae, dancehall, and hip hop to a more electronic and house emphasized sound. It was the groups hit single “Wacky Dip” that put Voicemail on the scene. The video showcased a new era of dancehall. The dance moves, catchy lyrics and fashion attracted a lot of new fans for the group. “We are handsome guys, we articulate well. Women like a man who is put together. Being stylish is just the icing on the cake in the dancehall space. Also, our message is simple, no matter how bad your day is, just have a good time.” Craig The group has received maximum success in Japan, selling over 100,000 copies of their debut album “Hey” back in 2006. It was no surprise that their second album “Let’s Go” would follow suit again in the Japanese market. Voicemail has collaborated with producers such as Stephen McGregor, Robert Livingston, Supa Dups, Don Corleon and Red One.

“It has been a very

hard but bless two and a half years. GOD is ALIVE and it is shown in every way.”

“Our level of professionalism sets us apart. The fact that we are very punctual and very orderly makes it easy for producers to want to work with us. Add the fact that we are constantly changing the stigma of dancehall (of being hardcore) by introducing some fun and music for the ladies and we have the ideal set-up for having our pick of producers to work with.” Craig The group went on to see more international success when the music video for “Show It,” a collaboration with fellow artist Demarco, was added to BET’s music video rotation. Fans of Voicemail are never disappointed when it comes to their live performances. Festivals such as Reggae Sumfest and Spring Fest and regular series

of shows in Trinidad and Tobago, the Bahamas, the US, Europe and Japan are some of places they have showcased their vibrant act. The fashion gurus in Jamaica have dubbed the group as “The Princes of Fashion” because of their unique style of dressing. Voicemail has endorsed Karl Kani’s Japan 2008 Collection. “I might see someone in a piece of clothing that looks great, but I get inspirations from so many places and cultures.” Kevin. Just when it seemed as though their success was unmeasured, the group suffered the worst news they could ever imagine when in May of 2010, O’Neil Edwards lost his life as a result of gunshot wounds during the course of a robbery at his home in Duhaney Park, Jamaica. Unhinged by the loss of their beloved member, Craig and Kevin took time out to mourn their loss and fans respected their absence. Now back and more focused than ever, the twosome started 2012 with a bang. Kevin Jackson is now enjoying fatherhood and making moves with his fellow group member Craig with new songs such as “Clap it up,” “Wrong Number’” featuring songbird Alaine, “Time Stand Still,” “Wild Bubble” among others. With new projects in the pipeline, Craig and Kevin still make decisions based on what O’Neil would think or say if he was still here with them. His death has not caused them to forget the journey they embarked on years ago. ON MAY 26, 2010, VOICEMAIL LOST A VERY IMPORTANT MEMBER, ONEIL EDWARDS. TALK ABOUT HOW ONEIL’S PASSING HAS AFFECTED YOUR LIVES PERSONALLY? KEVIN: Well look at it this way. When you have a chain and a link is broken it can be mended but you will always see the repair. As you said he was a pivotal part of us business wise and personally he was a great friend and a great individual overall. CRAIG: It is only natural that we are affected by his passing. He was more than just a group member, or a business partner, he was also our big brother that we listened and looked up to. But for the most part his voice remains in our hearts and minds everyday as we continue to grow as a group. HAS ONEIL’S PASSING AFFECTED THE DYNAMICS OF VOICEMAIL? KEVIN: Yes it has. You are always stronger in numbers and where we may have been weak he was strong so it will change the dynamics.

“Setting aside family

time is important. But it’s a sacrifice – one worth making.” Issue 14 | Nov - Dec 2012 17

CRAIG: Yes it has but we have created additional sound to add to the dynamics of voicemail. Meaning Kevin sound is coming forward more now than before, so with his voice being featured more in songs it has created an additional sound. WILL VOICEMAIL CONTINUE AS A DUO OR WILL YOU EVENTUALLY ADD A THIRD MEMBER? KEVIN: No one knows what the future holds but for now at this present moment we are what we are and that’s Craig and Kevin the duo of Voicemail. WHAT ARE YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES OF ONEIL? KEVIN: There are so many (smile). But I can remember one day playing basketball and he scored on someone to win the game and he went in his car and took out some money and gave the guy he scored on and told him to “buy some milo and give the change to his mom for school in the morning”. That was funny and that’s LOOKING AHEAD, YOU ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON A NEW ALBUM. WHAT IS THE CURRENT SOUND the kind of person he was, very jovial. AND MESSAGE? CRAIG: There is so much lol. It was the joy he expressed after performing for over 45 thousand KEVIN: This new album is actually a house fused people in Japan - he said tell them Voicemail is album. The message is as always fun, fun, fun!!! here (smile). CRAIG: Voicemail still sending the message that HOW HARD HAS IT BEEN TO MOVE ON MUSICALLY? we usually send. We are just adding to what you know. KEVIN: Music in itself is a healer and so it helps to ease the hurt you feel sometimes. But you never WHAT IS THE TITLE OF THE NEW ALBUM? really move on you just learn to cope and adjust. CRAIG: We are currently working on three CRAIG: It has been hard but it gets better albums. The one that was being recorded while everyday. Kevin and I know that O’Neil want us Oneil was alive plus two more. The first one is called NEXT LEVEL. The second one is called UP to keep the force of Voicemail alive. ALL NIGHT which is a R&B dancehall album. And WHAT HAS YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM BEEN LIKE the other one is called THE JOURNEY CONTINUES FROM FELLOW MUSICIANS, FANS AND FAMILY IN which is a reggae album that is being produce by FRANKIEMUSIC. DEALING WITH YOUR LOSS? KEVIN: Oh my! That has been tremendous. The WHO WERE SOME OF THE PRODUCERS YOU support has been really great. Have to say thanks WORKED WITH ON THE ALBUM? to everyone who have been there through it all. Going Skin Deep By Christene Carr

L

ooking good without makeup is all about having amazing skin. When wearing makeup one can conceal skin problems and accentuate positives facial features. However, without the power of a fantastic foundation, luscious blush, brightening bronzer, skin has to be nearly flawless.

The key to taking care of skin is to Know Your Skin. There are five basic skin types: Normal skin. This skin type has a proper balance of moisture and oil. Sensitive skin. People with sensitive skin often experience tinging, itching and might get blotches when they come in contact with some common ingredients found in facial care products.

Dry skin. If your face feels tight or stiff after you wash, chances are you have dry skin. Dry skin is also more prone to early wrinkling and creasing. Combination skin. As the name suggests, is a combination of two or more of the skin types mentioned above.

Oily skin. If your face looks shiny, greasy or slick an hour or two after you wash your face, chances are you have oily skin.

CLEANSE

MOISTURIZE

It is important to find the right cleanser for your skin type. With all skin types you want to choose a cleanser that removes impurities without stripping the skin of natural oils. Once you know your skin type, many manufacturers make it easy to find your perfect cleanser simply by reading the packaging. If you have dry skin, stay away from cleansers with alcohol. If you have sensitive skin look for cleansers formulated without harsh chemicals and irritants such as sulphates, synthetic dyes and fragrances.

Moisturizing is an important step no matter what your skin type. People with oily skin often think they don’t need to moisturize but it is possible for skin to be dehydrated under the slick of oil present on skin. If you have oily skin, look for an oil free moisturizer like Garnier Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel Cream -- it is light weight and contains pure antioxidant fruit water extracts and skin conditioning Vitamin E to prevent dryness and normalize skin. (walmart.com $7.99)

Lancome Creme Radiance Clarifying Cream-to-Foam Cleanser is formulated with antioxidant White Lotus and soothing Rose de France penetrates deep into the pores without over-drying to gently cleanse skin and other impurities. This cleanser is suitable for those with oily to normal skin. $25 at Macys and Macys.com

If you have dry skin you might be tempted to use the heaviest moisturizer you can find. This is not necessarily the best approach. Look for products that contain ingredients such as glycerin and dimethicone. Glycerine attracts moisture to your skin and dimethicone locks it in. Kinerase Restructure Firming Cream is formulated for all skin types but works wonders on dry skin. (Kinarase. com $98)

Boscia Purifying Cleansing Gel is a sulfate-free cleanser derived from amino acids. It deeply cleanses while preserving the skin’s natural oils. This Parabens, Sulfates, Synthetic Fragrances, Synthetic Dyes free formula, refines the look of pores and contains hydrangea leaf, green tea, and geranium that help to protect and perfect complexion. Boscia Purifying Cleansing Gel is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. ($26 at Sephora and Sephora.com) Issue 14 | Nov - Dec 2012 21

TONE

PROTECT

The jury is still out on the necessity of a toner. However, I like toners. Toners remove remnants of makeup or hard water impurities left behind after washing. Toners also balance the skin’s pH and makes the skin more receptive to moisturizers and other skin treatments, such as serums.

Sunscreen is a must 365 days per year, no matter your age or ethnicity. Use a broad Spectrum SPF that way you are protected from both UVA and UVB rays. Prolonged exposure to the suns rays ages the skin causing fine lines, wrinkles and darks spots.

The Body Shop Tea Tree Toner is great for oily, acne prone skin. The toner helps reduce the appearance of blemishes, prevent future breakouts, and control oil and shine. (thebodyshop-usa.com $11)

Dermalogica Solar defense Booster SPF50, Oil free Matte SPF is great for those with oily skin because not only does it protect against the harmful rays of the sun but it also matifies the skin. (Dermalogica.com $48)

L’Oreal HydraFresh DermoExpertise Hydrafresh Skin Toner Liquid contains beta hydroxy to gently exfoliate pro-Vitamin B5 that helps protect against moisture loss. This toner is suitable for all skin types. (Walmart $6.99)

EXFOLIATE The best way to give skin a boost is to exfoliate. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and speeds up cell turnover. Exfoliating also increases circulation to the skin giving the face a nice glow. It is generally safe to exfoliate at least once per week. However, you don’t want to exfoliate if you are breaking out because it can make the problem worse. Treat the breakout and once pimples are healed you can exfoliate. There are physical exfoliators like microbeads, as well as chemical exfoliators like glycolic acid. There are also products that combine the two. Kate Somerville Exfolikate is made with microbeads and Fruit Enzymes that clean pores, while Salicylic Acid balances hydration, without over-drying. This exfoliator is suggested for all skin types. (katesomerville.com $85) Cane + Austin Acne Treatment Pads If you are short on time then these exfoliating pads are for you. It is a one-step glycolic acid treatment product that is derived from pure cane sugar and contains salicylic acid to gently resurface skin and treat acne. ($60 for a 30 day supply)

Fade Dark Spots (Hyperpigmentation) Hyperpigmentation is one of main reason women (and men) wear makeup. In addition to exfoliating, fade creams, gels and serums such as Murad’s Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum ($60 murad.com) can help to minimize and even eliminate dark spots over time. While using fade creams and exfoliators it is extremely important to use an SPF every day and avoid excessive sun exposure.

Enhance Lashes and Brows One of the easiest ways to look and feel glamorous is to have bold, beautiful lashes and well-shaped brows. If you have paltry lashes and sparse brows try a lash and brow growth serum such as Grande Lash. Grande Lash is formulated with natural ingredients to enhance lashes and brows in as little as 4 weeks. (grandelashmd.com $64.95 | 3 month supply) Very few people are lucky enough to do nothing and still have beautiful skin. If you are among the lucky few, good for you! If you weren’t born with the gift of flawless skin, the steps above should help you look great without makeup.

Making“Scents”of it All

By Christene Carr

Fragrance is highly personal and scent often smells different from one person to the next. The chemistry of an each individual’s skin, the temperature and even diet can affect how a fragrance smells on the skin. However, there is nothing like a nudge in the right direction, so, here is an introduction to five of my current favorite fragrances.

GUERLAIN LA PETITE ROBE NOIRE (1.6 Ounces, $80, Guerlain.com)

The Little Black Dress or LBD can be dressed up or down and there is seldom an occasion where the LBD is inappropriate. With top notes of Bergamot and Black Cherry the fragrance starts with a hint of sweet citrus but is soon balanced with Black Rose and Almond. La Petite Robe Noire is rounded out with smoked tea and the spicy woodiness of Pachouli, Tonka Bean and Licorice. It wears exceptionally well, day or night.

GUCCI: GUCCI PREMIÈRE (2.5 Ounces $105 Gucci.com)

Gucci Première exudes sophistication. Première opens with citrus notes that flash away leaving a sensual flowery musk that is anchored by base of Leather and Wood. The finish is complex and seductive and the fragrance lasts up to 7 hours. According to Frida Giannini, Creative Director at Gucci, “Gucci Première is womanly, intriguing and as seductive as the perfect couture gown.”

ESCADA: ESPECIALLY ESCADA DELICATE NOTES (1.7 ounces, $60, Escada.com)

Especially Escada - Delicate Notes is inspired by the original rose based fragrance, Especially Escada. The fragrance is based on t1he light notes of the rose and balanced with of ylang ylang. It is a playful, feminine fragrance that is great for daytime wear.

CAUDALIE: THE DES VIGNES (1.7 ounces, $36, Caudalie.com)

DIOR: Oud Ispahan (4.25 ounces, $155, Dior.com)

Caudalie’s The des Vignes, combines Jasmine, Neroli Ginger and White Musk to create a very sensual, alluring and seductive fragrance. It lingers on the skin and becomes more interesting with each hour that passes. The finish is a powdery, gingery, musk, perfect for a night on the town.

This masterfully crafted Unisex Oud is a part of Chistian Dior’s La Collection Privée. The notes are Labdanum, Indonesian Patchouli, Laotian Oud Essence, Turkish Rose and Sandalwood. Oud Ispahan starts of relatively light but quickly turns warm and spicy and stops just short of being too intoxicating. This is a bold fragrance with heavy Oriental influence. Oud Ispahan is guaranteed to turn heads.

ANIMAL INSTINCT

While this season’s must have draws inspiration from an African Safari - with prints such as leopard, tiger, giraffe and zebra – it is the leopard that is leading the pack with sheer elegance and style. Reflected in super high stilettos, body hugging dresses, soft to the touch scarves and lux cardigans, this fun, hot print is something that everyone can wear no matter your genetic make-up. My advice, throw caution to the wind and give in to your inner animal instinct with these looks that we cannot take our eyes off of.

true warrior, Etana continues to stand her ground with her thought provoking lyrics that continue to deliver uplifting messages. She is quoted as saying, “Overall, my music has to uplift. It can’t just be that I go in a studio and string words together. My music must have a message. It must have a purpose. It has to make people feel good and want to really listen to what I’m saying.” It is with that vision and steadfast determination that Etana is often nominated for Best New Artists, Female Vocalist of the Year, Reggae Singer of the Year and Cultural Artist of the Year. Still these nominations and other accolades have not gone to her head. In a May 2008 interview, Etana was asked who her musical influences were internationally and locally. Among them she listed R&B chanteuse, Jill Scott, not knowing that years later she would be likened to her. States NPR.org, “Reggae’s Jill Scott, Jamaican soul singer with a voice that’s rich, robust and saturated in the right kind of buoyancy, sage but never preachy.” A title that is befitting her, Etana is enjoying success that has been years in the making. To her credit, she has not one but two chart topping albums under her belt: 2008’s Strong One and 2011’s Free Expressions and hit singles including “I Am Not Afraid,” “Roots,” “Wrong Address,” among others. “I’ve been blessed with this talent and I don’t plan on slowing down for now,” adds Etana who has indeed kept her word. On November 13, 2012 she released her digital-only EP Reggae with VP Records. The EP features three tracks – “Reggae,” “Better Tomorrow,” “4 Play 2 Love” - which is a preview of her upcoming album Better Tomorrow slated for release in February 2013. Add to the equation a new baby and Etana seems to be living the life she designed for herself. In an exclusive interview, Etana talks about her upcoming projects, being a Mom and the future. You are referred to as “reggae’s Jill Scott,” how does that make you feel? Well I am a fan of Jill Scott’s music since the first album. It gives me a good feeling to know people can think of me in that light. She is – in my eyes - one of the best soul sisters out there. In your opinion what similarities do you think you have to Jill Scott? Hmmm I never thought of that. I think she is in a world by herself and so am I. I think the only comparison that could possibly be made is that based on her music and energy I believe she is into nature and poetry and so am I. Do you have a favorite Jill Scott song?

If so, which

and why? Anything from the “Who’s Jill Scott” album. That’s just one of my favorite albums. You recently released a 3 Song EP entitled “Reggae.” Talk about the process of recording and writing the songs. Reggae is my expression of my love for the Genre. Loads a people say good reggae music isn’t coming outta JA anymore. They may be right to some extent. It may not be playing on JA radio as much for whatever reason but it definitely is being produced and played in the rest of the world. Those were some of the thoughts that influenced the writing of the song Reggae, written by Jessie Adleman, myself and Rellee of A-Team from New York. What was it like working with producer, Rellee Hayden of A-Team Music? Relle is very cool but serious about his work and I love that about him. The whole A-Team when they get to the studio is ready to create more than anything else and I enjoyed every moment. The EP serves as a preview of your soon to be released album “Better Tomorrow.” What’s the creative direction of the album? The concept of the album is to inspire and put the listener in a mellow mood even if you’re rocking. It’s just a positive vibe on a musical journey. Who are the producers that you worked with on the album? Shane Brown of Juke Box and Rellee of A-Team Music.

“Reggae music is like food to my soul. It’s a deep connection that I have with the music that fuels my passion and I keep going whenever I hear the drums, bass and guitar.”

How did you come up with the album title, “Better Tomorrow?” I am always a strong believer of no matter what we face tomorrow we’ll have better days. Before writing the song, “Better Tomorrow” I saw a young boy, his mother and younger sister searching a dumpster for plastic bottles to trade in for food. The little boy found a banana and he jumped up and gave his sister a piece. I thought to myself, if he can be happy about a banana he found in a dumpster why should I complain about any challenges or obstacles I face. I pray that he and people like him struggling across the world will have a better tomorrow. How do your past albums differ from “Better Tomorrow?” The album the “Strong One” was an introduction to Etana. The second album, “Free Expressions” has variety just like the first album but the lyrics are stronger and more free. This album has great production as well but all live music by some of Jamaica’s best and the lyrics and vocals are even stronger. Better as I grow.

In what way do you believe your music has grown? The energy is different but a lot stronger based on time and experiences portrayed through the lyrics and melodies are more unique. Vibe Magazine wrote that you have already established yourself as a formidable performer and songwriter whose music and reputation precedes you. Do you believe that statement? I feel truly honored and appreciate their statement. I believe them yes but I must admit I have much further to go. With each album, each show, each tour I do, I see myself growing more. How important is it for you to record the type of music that you do? Reggae music is like food to my soul. It’s a deep connection that I have with the music that fuels my passion and I keep going whenever I hear the drums, bass and guitar.

Issue 14 | Nov - Dec 35

What do you hope to achieve with your lyrics? Positive energy + inspiration = good vibes. You never know what your audience might be going through at times. I may just have a song that could help that person in their situation. Music heals and put people in a different state of mind so to me the message is always important. Congratulations on the birth of your daughter. How is motherhood? Great so far, no complaints. I’m enjoying every moment of it. As a new Mom, how will your scheduled be impacted with touring, performances etc? It won’t at all. We have made plans to have both run smoothly. How much has your life changed since giving birth? Well she’s still pretty young. I’ll need a few more months to answer that. How do you balance your days? I make to do list, follow a schedule and stick to the plan as much as possible. How do you relax? By reading a good book, going to the River or simply by sitting alone enjoy the silence. What are some of your favorite things to do when not working? Apart from doing the things mentioned above, I’ll probably go to the movies or dinner with my family. What can we look forward to from Etana in the next 5 years? Greater strides, a lot more music and a wider audience.

INDIO’S FIRST ANNUAL GREGORY ISAACS REGGAE FESTIVAL In October 2010, the reggae fraternity lost a true musical legend in the form of the “Cool Ruler” Gregory Isaacs. Described by Milo Miles, writer for the New York Times, as “the most exquisite vocalist in reggae,” Isaacs left an indelible musical mark on the world with a catalog of hit singles and Grammy Nominated albums. Isaacs’ career spanned over 30 years beginning in 1968 when you caught the eye of Byron Lee. It is estimated that that the singer released a total of 500 albums (including compilations) in Jamaica, the U.K., and the U.S. combined during his career. With such an impressive career, Isaacs garnered a loyal following of fans who not only loved his music, but also his style. And so, it is that love that gave birth to the First Annual Gregory Isaacs Reggae Festival held at Fullenwinder Auditorium on October 20, 2012 in Indio, California. The Coachella Valley came alive with a line-up that included Third World Band, Gregory Isaac impersonator, Mr. Kool and local acts, Tribe-O, Sol Rising, Come Unity, Better Chemistry and F-13. Though everyone was excited to see the Reggae Ambassadors perform, they also wanted to see if Mr. Kool had what

it took to deliver Isaacs hit ballads. Prior to Third World taking the stage, Mr. Kool backed by Better Chemistry, dressed in an Ivory suit with a fedora, a nod to Isaac’s signature style, performed fan favorites such as “Front Door,” “My Only Lover,” “Number One,” and “Night Nurse,” among others. In addition to his performance, Mr. Kool gesticulated like Isaacs did in so many of his performances, clearly showing that he had done his homework and was serious about paying homage to the late great singer. The audience was entranced as they sang along and cheered when Mr. Kool belt out their favorite Cool Ruler song. Third World closed the show with their usual stellar performance of singles “96 Degress,” “Now That We Found Love,” “Reggae Ambassadors,” and “Committed.” Their set was not void of up-tempo hits that kept patrons dancing for over an hour. As a tribute to Isaacs, the band performed “Rumors” and “Front Door.” After the show, fans clamored to get their picture taken with all the performers. It was the perfect ending to a night in memory of Gregory Isaacs.

MIND GARDENING WITH SNOOP LION By Raine Martin

During his musical and spiritual journey, Snoop was reportedly shocked by some of the conditions of Jamaica’s urban communities, particularly in the inner city communities of Kingston, and the effect that malnutrition was having on the city’s children. Snoop came up with the idea of building “Mind Gardens,” a community gardens project that gives communities the resources to provide children with healthy fruits and vegetables. “When I went to Jamaica we took time to visit these communities in Kingston, and I was deeply affected by the poverty and lack of food available to the children,” Snoop Lion said. “No child should go hungry. After all the inspiration Jamaica has provided me, I felt compelled to create a program to give back to the community.” Recently, Snoop teamed up with John Paul DiJoria of Paul Mitchell and Patrón Spirits’ fame, and Reed’s Ginger Brew to start Mind Gardens, a nonprofit organization which is dedicated to building community gardens in impoverished neighnside the mind of Snoop Lion is probably very in- borhoods. Creative Director’s Note WITH FASTIDIOUS DEVOTION “One thing we cannot do is go into our past and erase it. We do have power over our Future. Live it how you Design it. It’s your world...” Triple The Focus past thirteen issues has been incredibly entertaining and special to us. Through the many ups and downs of the industry, celebrating our launch in Jamaica to our first year anniversary, we thank all our readers for staying the course with us. Like true champions, we are moving forward with a renewed devotion and plans to grow the brand. Our goal remains the same: to deliver the stories that keep you engaged and satisfy your reading palette. And before we forge full speed ahead into 2013, let me say that we would not be here without you, so thank you and cheers! We are doing something unique this month as we combine the November and December issue with a double cover feature of reggae group VOICEMAIL and reggae songstress ETANA. We couldn’t be more pleased to feature both artists who graciously gave us some insight on their forthcoming 2013 musical projects, parenthood and more. Fans of repetition, our artist features continue with upcoming reggae artist, KRAY-Z. In October we traveled to the desert and brought back photos and a thrilling review of the first annual Gregory Isaac Tribute Festival in Palm Springs. In this double issue, we bring you Triple The Focus’ TRAVEL LOCALES – a new addition to the magazine that you can look forward to every month. As this is the season, drennaLuna fashion feature along with our beauty, fragrance, holiday gifts and décor concepts, give you varying options and ideas that will surely have you feeling merry. Also, back to warm your spirits, we’ve got the uplifting words of Dr. Manning-Fontaine. As we close 2012 and set the stage for 2013, we are excited to share a few upcoming exclusives. The journey continues for Third World as they celebrate their 40th Anniversary. We will be front and center to bring you photos of their celebration. Also we will have exclusive coverage of Disney blockbuster Cool Running’s 20th Anniversary with LEON and co-stars, insight into Ky-mani Marley’s upcoming music project and Mr. Kool’s Tribute to the Cool Ruler, Gregory Isaacs. Additionally, JADINE aka Soca Deva, who is the face of MONTSERRAT Festival, will take us with her on the journey to Celebrating 50 years of Carnival. We are looking forward to your continued support and feedback in 2013. Not only have we been blessed with increase in readership, we are thankful for those who express interest in being featured in the Magazine. To our advertisers, thank you for your business and future clients we welcome the opportunity to share and introduce your products to our readers. Please continue to write and share your thoughts creativedirector@triplethefocus.com. Until next month, “T-Focus and think Creative.”
