NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNING, NEW GOALS! As a proud Jamaican woman, I am happy to support my fellow country woman, Kaci Fennell, who will be representing the land of our birth in the 2014 Miss Universe Pageant. The poised 5’9” 21 year old beauty graces the January cover in drennaLUNA black and white stripe dress. Shot in Kingston, Jamaica by new kid on the block, Christopher Karram, it was one of Kaci’ final task before bidding adieu to join the other contestants in Doral, Florida. The 63rd staging of the Miss Universe Pageant will air on Sunday, January 25, 2015 on NBC at 8pm. I thought it quite fitting that Kaci is on our first cover of the New Year, which symbolizes a new beginning as she embarks on this journey that will change her life forever whether she takes home the crown or not. The Miss Universe pageant has served as a vehicle that advances and supports the opportunities for the delegates. Those who are chosen to represent their country are bright and ambitious with platforms that they hold dear to them. For Kaci, it is teaching special education to children in need and for us, it is empowering the lives of our readers. A New Year means breathing new life into the Magazine, another opportunity to top the previous year and accomplish some of the things we didn’t get a chance to. As I have often stated, it is extremely important for us to impact your lives in a variety of ways such as health & fitness, finance, travel, fashion etc. That remains our number one goal. Speaking of goals, we are sure you have listed a few that you would like to accomplish in 2015 and we hope that you remain steadfast and committed to seeing your resolutions through. I hope that we can encourage you through our features and keep you focused. Happy New Year!!

PUSHUPS There are probably few exercises that people hate more than pushups. This is not only due to the fact that they are a little harder to perform, but they also harken back to the time of high school PE and/or boot camp. From Celebrated Pro Athlete to Bonafide Star,
OMARI BANKS HAS “NO POINT TO PROVE” By Malaika Lepine Photocredit: Josveek Huligar
Contrary to popular belief, Anguillan born Omari Banks is not a professional athlete turned artist, but rather a born star who at the age of five found his calling when he took the stage in Milan, Italy to sing alongside his father Bankie Banx. Along the way, while mastering the guitar and penning his thoughts to music, Omari became a celebrated athlete. Renowned worldwide, Omari Banks found success as a professional cricketer then eventually returning to his first love, music. As a child, what did you dream of becoming? When I was a boy I had two passions, sports and music. I wanted to be a pro baseball player until I started to play cricket at the age of 8 years old. Music was always around me - I was always singing with my family and taking part in talent competitions. You are known as a professional cricket player, why did you leave it behind and how did it translate into music? I left cricket behind when I got to a place where I thought I had lost the drive to get up every day and get better at what I loved so much. I’ve always been one to follow my passions and when that love diminished it was time for me to move on. I’ve learned so many life lessons from sport and ultimately it has made me a better person not forgetting tons of inspiration to write songs. How did your sport fans react to you making that transition? For the most part people have embraced it really well. A
nitanja is a talented designer and exotic beauty, whose story is deeply entwined with the majesty of St. Lucia. Born and raised in St. Lucia as the daughter of two artists – a Cruzian born painter and an architect mother of German descent, ANITANJA was home schooled as a child with a heavy arts and crafts foundation. In the idyllic setting of an estate purchased by her
family in the 60s, ANITANJA developed a deep creativity expressive of the beauty of her tropical surroundings. Growing up in the freedom of the outdoors, playing with natural elements, beach combing and exploring the grounds, ANITANJA developed a fascination with the intricate shapes and textures of nature. At 8 years old, she began making necklaces out of local seeds and tropical
shells. As she got older, she began sketching jewelry inspired by the shells, seeds, cocoa pods and plants of her untouched natural environment. At age 20, ANITANJA began translating a lifetime of jewelry sketches into the manufacture of brass, silver and gold plated pieces, which she currently sells at resorts in St. Lucia and worldwide. R&B Artist,
Nathaniel’s Road to Success By Jessica Lanice The road to success is not an easy journey but Nathaniel has been making his way through to get there. To his credit, he has singles with the legendary Hip-Hop artist, LL Cool J called “L.O.V. E”, and new kids on the hip-hop scene such as Troy Ave and Chinx Drugs called “My Lady” off of Nathaniel’s latest EP “Undeniable”, which has been played on MTV, Power 105.1, and Hot 97. With a legend and new artists behind him, Nathaniel is getting closer to success! But let’s find out more about his journey. When Nathaniel started, he was in a singing group, which consisted of girls and boys at his church. However, the group parted ways and both he and his brothers formed a group together. They did shows in NYC and out of state. But after a while, the group decided to separate and work on their own individual goals. This is when Nathaniel decided to become a solo artist. He performed in shows, made his own songs, and wrote hooks for a lot of well known artists such as Ludacris, Papoose, French Montana, DJ Absolut, and many more. In 2012, Nathaniel released his mixtape “Born”. The mixtape helped to push Nathaniel’s career to the next level. As a close friend to Nathaniel, I have seen his ups and downs, the changes in his life, and the grind he puts into his career on his own. It is very rare for an artist to be their own manager, publicist, producer, songwriter, and most importantly learning and understanding the music business while staying true to their art. It’s not an easy task to do. However, Nathaniel has done it and still is but now has the support from Hot 97’s DJ Absolut as his manager. Before hiring
a manager, Nathaniel pushed his mixtape “Born” by himself (of course with support from his family and friends) by sending it to bloggers, DJs and radio stations. In addition to marketing his music, Nathaniel remained a doting father, a student and a full-time employee. When asked why he decided to take on so much at one time, he said “I wasn’t comfortable with my life so I decided to grind every way possible until I could change my situation.” It was only right for when Nathaniel released his EP for it to be entitled “Undeniable”. He is someone that you cannot deny as an artist, a parent, a student and more. This is only the beginning for him and he is ready to take on this industry. THE ABCs OF MANAGING YOUR MONEY You don’t have to be a financial genius to manage your money wisely. Just take care of these basics. Sure, managing your money can get complex at times. But it basically comes down to answering three simple questions: A) Where does all my money go? B) How much can I keep? C) What will it take to make the amount of money I keep more than the amount I spend? A. Start by knowing where you are financially today First, grab a snapshot of your debts and expenses. Look up what you owe on credit cards, home loans, student loans and other types of debt. Then, for one solid month, write down every dollar you spend out of pocket. Think of it as keeping a personal money management diary. Instead of your innermost secrets, you’ll be writing down every out-of-pocket expense from new clothes to candy bars. Here’s a sample spending journal that can get you started. PART 1: MONTHLY INCOME

VARIANCE (This is how much over, or under, your budget you are.)
Also size up your fixed expenses. These include things like rent and car payments. Then, categorize all your spending; for example, groceries, transportation and housing. B. Let’s get down to your personal finance basics: What do you want most, and how much money do you need to get it? You need to save up for things you’ll buy soon, like a used car or a new fridge, perhaps. It’s not a bad idea to separate these short-term goals into “must-have” and “wish” lists. If your old fridge is kaput, a new one would be a must-have. Whereas that cool new gadget you’ve been eyeing probably belongs on your wish list. You also need to plan for the future. Want to buy a house? Send kids to college? Retire someday? Write down your longer-term financial goals and put them in order of how important they are to you. Then think about what it would take to actually achieve the goals at the top of your list. Not sure how much your goals might cost? You can find all kinds of estimating tools online, like this one to calculate how much you’ll need to retire. Add up how much money you’ll need for your top short-term and long-range goals.
C. Take another look at your monthly spending Go over every category and cut back as much as you can. Remember, every dollar you don’t spend now is another dollar toward the things you want most. Once you’re done, write down your new category-by-category spending totals. Extra credit: Jump-start your savings plan with four more personal finance tips ·

Shaliek: The Heart of a Man (Long Story Short) By Jessica Lanice
Recently nominated for two 2014 Soul Train Awards for Best Independent Soul/R&B Performance for his single The Past and the BET Centric Certified Awards, soul artist, Shaliek’s music career has reached a new height. Long story short, Shaliek was signed to Universal Music Group in 2001; wrote songs for Nicole Scherzinger, Case, Day 26 and Jordan Knight; released several EPs and albums such as “I Don’t Wanna Be Famous”, “I Don’t Wanna Be Famous (Stripped),” “Vintage XLL”, and “Blood Sweat & Tears”; and now he is signed to Pendulum Records. When Shaliek heard the news of being nominated for two Soul Train Awards, he said “it took my breath away. I didn’t believe it was true”. He called his label to confirm if it was true and they did. He said the experience was a great feeling especially being around his peers. When asked if things have changed for him since his nominations, he said everything is still the same but it’s great for him to now have attached to his name “Soul Train Award Nominee”. Shaliek has been working on his new EP The Heart of a Man: Long Story Short with producer Evan Brown and songwriter Jaron
Hitz. “I’ve known Evan Brown for a couple of years and I’ve always admired his work from a far. Jaron I’ve known for over 10 years. He knows me beyond the artist. He’s one of my favorite songwriters. He pays attention to the melody and concept.” This EP showcases his growth, creativity and versatility as an artist. Compared to his last album “Blood, Sweat, & Tears”, which was passionate and serious, this new EP is more soulful, rhythmic, edgier and laid back. Overall, this EP comes from a deeper place. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit in a session with Shaliek, Evan Brown, Jaron Hitz and other songwriters. The chemistry between them all was magical. From the conception of the song to writing the lyrics to finding the perfect melody to hearing the final version of the song, it was amazing to see them create together. The Heart of a Man: Long Story Short is most definitely an EP to look out for and it shows a different side of Shaliek. The Heart of a Man: Long Story Short will be released early 2015.
