TRAVEL NOTEBOOK: ANGUILLA ‘And if travel is like love, it is, in the end, mostly because it’s a heightened state of awareness, in which we are mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity and ready to be transformed. That is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end.’ Pico Lyer Pico Lyer was on to something when he said the ‘the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end.’ That’s how I feel about the “Tranquility Wrapped In Blue” isle, Anguilla. On my first encounter in November 2013, the islands’ refined warmth tugged at my heartstrings and since then, it has inspired me to return to its shores to nurture an utterly beautiful and joyously whimsical love affair. I returned to my heaven on earth a year later and its soothing fresh air and decadence is just as I remembered. Outside of the usual island trappings, Anguilla has something for everyone. Be it a couple’s retreat, family getaway, renewal of vows or just some R&R with friends, the island beckons to those who are looking for something more than white sand beaches. A British overseas territory in the Caribbean, Anguilla lies east of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and north of Saint Martin and is approximately 16 miles long by 3 miles wide at its widest point. The total land area of the territory is 35 square miles with a population of 13,500. Because of its size, everyone knows each other and that is evident in the many pleasantries shared between locals and tourists alike. Upon arrival you will immediately feel at home as you are enveloped by the hospitality of the beautiful people. What I love most? At night the sun gracefully gives way to the stars that is cradled by the fiery orange skies which can be seen from anywhere – Rendezvous Bay, Shoal Bay, Crocus Bay or Sandy Ground, the small uninhibited islands – Sandy Island, Prickley Pear or Scilly Cay which offer a treasure trove of experiences such as a mellow afternoon of sunbathing, local music and delicious seafood. For an authentic musical vibe, Pumphouse, DaVida’s, Viceroy, the Dune and Dad’s offer live bands. When it’s time to rest up, the island has no shortage of illustrious hotels and villas. There is also a laundry list of restaurants for those with the most discerning palate – my favorites, Dad’s, DaVida, Veya, The Viceroy and CeBlue. I could go on and on about what’s inspiring and delightedly unique about Anguilla however to truly grasp the effect, you’d need to make a trip so that you can fall in love, like I have, with one of the Caribbean’ greatest gems.

Mongol |Culturally Mixed Photos by MBFW Mongolian designer, Bayarmaa Bayarkhuu, debuted her first collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. The collection was inspired by a combination of traditional Mongolian culture, urban causal style and a jet-set entrepreneur lifestyle. The Mongol Fall/Winter 2015 collection incorporated sleek wearable pieces of plastic and velvet mixed with Mongolian inspired furs, chandelier earrings, kimono sleeves and traditional ornamental headpieces. Bold colors and mixed textures were a welcome diversion for a season used to seeing a more subdued palette. The collection was modern and worldly, yet strongly infused with traditional Asian influences creating a very energized and unique mix of cultures.

Mark and Estel | You’re a Rockstar! Photos by MBFW Mark and Estel Fall/Winter 2015 collection, “Stairway to the stars”, was a continuation of the duo’s rockstar saga. They showed an eclectic mix of herringbone, tartan and gingham prints on silks, wool, lace and knits. They made history in 2013 for being the first fashion designers to perform their own songs on the MBFW runway. The made in the USA collection appealed to the fashion conscious with lots of edgy cuts, flowing fabrics and attention-grabbing patterns. A long black cape coat over a sheer bodysuit and a satin wide-leg jumpsuit were show-stoppers down the runway. The design and music duo concluded the show with a royal, high energy performance yelling, “You’re a fashion rock star!”

Carmen Marc Valvo | Preppy Glam Photos by MBFW The preppy look just got a glam makeover. Carmen Marc Valvo’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection, inspired by “50s Americana” and a youthful schoolyard whimsy theme, was fun and refreshing while maintaining its elegance and glamour. The collection had a tailored ease comprising of chic tartan dresses and classic pleats with silver metallic accents. Plaid was the focal reference and there was an abundance in bold reds, light grays, navys and blacks. Menswear was impeccably tailored consisting of sharp blazers, cropped trousers and loose skinny ties. Gowns pleated in a silk chiffon plaid had delicate beaded collars and tuxedo influences. Though a departure from his typical design, Carmen Marc Valvo’s school kid plaid-infused color story was a sophisticated success

Etxeberria | Classic Contrast Photos by MBFW Etxeberria Fall/Winter 2015 collection placed classical tailoring as the center and base of its development. In shades of gray, navy, black and reds, Roberto Etxeberria androgynous design aesthetics delivered innovative pieces made of wool, felt, leather and fur. The highlights were zip closing blazers with color blocks, pinstripe garments, high collars, fur detailed jackets and coats. The juxtaposition between the classical prints such as herringbone, pinstripe, houndstooth and jacquard, combined with each other by overlapping or simple cuts, or with fur, created an interesting dimension and modern contrast in the collection.

Taoray Wang | Modern Chic Photos by MBFW Taoray Wang, one of the most successful womenswear labels in China, presented a stellar runway show for her second season at NYFW. Wang played with textured materials ranging from polyurethane coatings to natural wools, to create a collection full of texture, structure, and silhouettes. The color palette was kept cool and neutral with white, grey, creme, navy, olive and a deep burgundy. The collection as a whole was classic with a modern twist. Standout pieces were the coats and outerwear, as well as the exceptionally tailored pantsuits and sheath dresses. The polka-dot coats in particular were a personal favorite and must-have for fall.


Reem Acra | Gypsy Fantasy Photos by Vogue UK Reem Acra presented a magical extravagance of boho flair for its Fall/Winter 2015 presentation. Acra referenced Stevie Nicks’ “24-Karat Gold Collection” 1970’s self-portraits for design direction. Drawing inspirations from the golden Victorian age, the collection of bejeweled high collars, fur adorned shoulder pads, intricately beaded and crystals encrusted mini dresses and floor length gowns were glamorous and regal. The designer used luxurious fabrics rich in texture and color, such as chocolate leather, champagne velvet, red mink, midnight blue, lame brocade and amethyst-embroidered lace, to create a modern day fantasy of opulence and elegance

Vivienne Tam | Urban Romanticism Photos by Vogue UK Vivienne Tam’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection is an urban romantic take on chinoiserie, the European’s ancient concept of China and its imagination of the exotic far east. The presentation was full of Victorian-inspired collars, fine silks, sheer tulle, multi-textured techno-mesh and laser-cut appliques. Exaggerated silhouettes with gathered sleeves, flared A-line dresses, quilted skirts and jackets, and menswear-inspired trousers appeared in both natural and technical materials, such as boiled wool or melton. The strength and beauty of the collection lied in the fusion of two concepts, an ancient ideology with a modern futuristic twist.


Lupe Gajardo | Organic Expressions Photos by MBFW Chilean designer, Lupe Gajardo, debuted her Fall/Winter 2015 collection at New York Fashion Week. Inspired by the urban streets, birds, the wandering, freedom of expression, organic elements and authenticity; the majority of the ensembles in the collection were made from unique materials such organic cotton, recycled denim, natural feathers, coffee sacks and pins. Standout elements appeared in her patchwork denim and draping technique. Though not a typical Fall collection, with its one-shoulder dresses, crochet maxi cover-ups and leather sandals, Gajardo’s designer point of view was very distinct and creative.

Anna Sui | Hippie Paradise Photos by MBFW Known for her artistic flair and ability to create designs that transcend eras and become timeless pieces, Anna Sui Fall/Winter 2015 collection was reminiscent of her ‘70s era references, and bohemian and tribal influences. This retro period was a major fall trend amongst designers, but unlike the more sleek and sophisticated interpretations seen on the runways, Sui designs for the hippie personified and Woodstock enthusiast. Long psychedelic printed dresses, Mongolian faux-fur coats, flared trousers and small leather crossbody bags, reflected the hippy spirit. The accessories even got a bit whimsical with crocheted caps shaped like Viking helmets, complete with horns and braids. Don’t be surprised to see these trending this fall!

Oudifu | Artistic Expression Photos by MBFW OUDIFU, a Shanghaibased brand, made its second presentation at New York Fashion Week. Designer, Zhuliang Li, draws inspirations from his cultural background and fuses them into beautiful, modern, wearable art. The theme for this collection was the extinct wholly mammoth, depicted as artistic Asian prints on tops, skirts and coats in the most contemporary and unimposing way. A standout was a long cream coat with wholly mammoth imagery printed on the back. Overall, the collection was sophisticated, flattering and creatively innovative. This brand is definitely one to watch!

Bibhu Mohapatra | Red Carpet Perfection Photos by Vogue UK Bibhu Mohapatra‘s Fall/ Winter 2015 collection oozed luxury, sophistication and elegance. The presentation was eyecatching from beginning to end. Mohapatra is renowned for his Indian inspired creations that exude refined glamour and this collection delivered. Silver hues, pops of blue, oxblood red, mustard yellow, rust orange, black and white shades rocked the runway. Luxe fur, feathered skirts, hand-beaded embellishments, flowing chiffon gowns with high slits and sheer details, were breathtaking down the runway. It’s hard to choose a highlight from such beautiful consistency. This collection is truly red carpet perfection.

Iijin | Cool Kids Photos by MBFW Iijin’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection was all about street style and youthful coolness. The collection included plaid pants, varsity jackets, sequins skirts, sweatshirts and even fur. Many pieces had graphic prints with small animated characters and caricatures, a design style the label is known for. Each piece was paired with an equally stylish and urban chic sneaker. This collection is the perfect fusion of art meets street wear - fun, wearable, modern and sure to be a hit among all the cool kids.


Vivienne Hue | Eclectic Expression Photos by MBFW Vivienne Hu’s Fall/Winter 2015 was a diverse presentation of bold, eclectic pieces. The collection was a combination of different design elements such as clean lines, cutouts, piping, geometric details and asymmetric hemlines. Leather dresses and quilted coats were standout pieces, perfect for the strong, modern day woman. Vivienne’s classic color palette of maroon red, teal, olive, beige, white and black fused with her modern architectural cuts creates a contemporary line for the fierce and edgy woman with a unique sense of style.

Academy of Arts | Future Potential Photos by MBFW Young designers are always a treat to watch. Their unique expressions and innovative designs go against the grain of what the business of fashion guidelines are trending for next fall. Instead, their point of view is individualized and uninfluenced. The Academy of Arts graduating class of 2015 presented just that. There was a strong use of fabric manipulation, printing techniques and advance tailoring skills; 15 design students presented a total of 64 looks that were stimulating, innovative, creative, unique and full of potential for the future.

Although it may seem as if the model face with the angelic voice of singer, songwriter Toian is an overnight success, the road to her budding stardom was filled with tragedy, hard work and dedication. Before there was Toian the star, there was Toi who faced adversity when she survived a horrific car accident, which claimed the life of a close friend, and nearly left her paralyzed from the waist down. Getting a second chance at life, Toian went after her dreams. Her musical career began in 2010 when she met Class One Music chief record producer, Sean Ricketts who recorded her first single, “Sunshine�. The single premiered on a National Jamaican radio show and the rest as they say is history.

Has music always been your dream? When and how did you get started? Music is something I’ve always been passionate about ever since I can remember, but up until a few years ago it was not my main focus. I was inspired to begin my musical journey due to a tragic car accident in 2009. I lost someone close to me and that really changed my perspective and ultimately lead me to pursue what I love. Who are your musical inspirations? Barrington Levy, Tenor Saw, Sista Nancy and Super Cat. Recently I’ve been listening to some very laid back music from artists such as Alina Baraz, SZA, Banks and Ghost Loft to name a few

TYRONE WELLS’, “ROLL WITH IT!” By Azem Bailey Photos by Ryan Longnecker

Beautiful in its purity, Tyrone Wells takes us on a journey and all we need to do is ‘Roll With It’. The singer, songwriter and musician whose previous work has been heard in several major films and television shows including Greys Anatomy and One Tree Hill delivers a compilation of songs each with its own aura, its own sense of space and each undeniably special. They draw you in and do more than make you want to listen, they make you feel, isn’t that the point? As I listened through the album a number of songs evoked the desire to be standing in an auditorium surrounded by thousands of concert goers wailing out the hypnotic refrains and choruses littered throughout it. Which makes his nationwide tour something you should check out. “In Our Blood” sets this scene from the start. The folksy stringed instruments supported by huge drums lay the foundation for the melody that is as catchy as it is glorious. Melodies are something Mr. Wells seems to have a gift for and made me eager for the next track to begin. The anthems continue with ‘Every Night’, an intimate admission of dedication to a lov-

er and “Catch a moment”, both songs that highlight the songwriters’ ability discuss deeply personal issues in an honest and relatable way. I got to the playful arrangement of piano stabs and handclaps, “The One I Love” and was so impressed by Well’s ability to speak of love so purely, void of sexual innuendo, I thought this would be a great song for a father to sing to his daughter – even wrote that down in my notes. Seemed I had jumped the gun. “Always Love You” sees a father making promises to his daughter and he asks her to remember that he will always love her. With instrumentation consisting mainly of acoustic guitar and strings, the sincerity in Wells voice sits perfectly on top and is a true blessing to listen to. This album showcases a gift to meld melodies, music and lyrics together in ways ranging from full throttle, venue filling folk pop anthems to sparse, intimate, personal gems making it an engaging and pleasurable experience from start to finish. I’d say, you need to “Roll With It!”

ABOUT TYRONE WELLS

Tyrone Wells is a singer/songwriter in the folk-pop genre, originally from Spokane, Washington. His music has been featured over 50 times on hit television shows including: Grey’s Anatomy, The Vampire Diaries, Private Practice, and One Tree Hill, among many others; as well as in films such as: Everyone’s Hero, My Sister’s Keeper, and Rails & Ties. In 2006, Tyrone signed a recording contract with Universal Republic, releasing his major label debut, “Hold On,” followed up by his sophomore release, “Remain,” in 2009. Tyrone’s first single, “More,” went the #13 at Triple A radio and was featured as the theme song for the A&E show Intervention. Seafood, such as oysters and mussels, are aphrodisiacs that will prepare you for a night of passion. The taste of oysters and mussels, depending on how they are prepared, soak up the flavors of their broth. Add a Caribbean twist like coconut ginger roasted oysters or coconut ginger mussels. If oysters and mussels are not up your taste bud alley, prepare a sweet, savory mango-jerk sauce over tilapia filets or grilled lobster tails.

Coconut Ginger Mussels Ingredients: • Mussels • Coconut water • Fresh, grated ginger • Soy sauce • Cilantro • Jalapeno peppers to taste

Directions: • In a large pot pour in coconut milk, grated ginger and soy sauce and let simmer for two mins • Increase heat to medium and add in mussels and jalapenos. • Cover and cook mussels for about 5-7 mins, shaking the pot occasionally until the shells open; discard any unopened mussels • Transfer mussels into a shallow bowl and spoon broth over mussels • Garnish mussels with cilantro

Mango-jerk sauce Ingredients: • Fresh mangoes, peeled diced or mango puree • Honey • Jerk sauce • Scallion, chopped

Directions: • Blend fresh mangoes until it forms a puree • In a saucepan over medium heat, add honey, jerk sauce, and chopped scallion in the puree and boil for 2 to 3 mins


Chocolate Fondue Ingredients: • Whipped cream • Bittersweet chocolate bars • Amaretto liqueur or liqueur of your preference (optional) • Almonds, chopped (optional) Directions: • Heat ½ cup cream in a saucepot over moderate (between medium and low) heat until cream comes to a low boil. • Remove pan from the heat and add chocolate • Let chocolate stand in hot cream for 3 to 5 mins to soften then whisk chocolate together with the cream • Stir in liqueur and chopped almonds • Transfer the fondue to a fondue pot or set a mixing bowl on a rack above a small lit candle • Dip strawberries or your favorite dippables with fondue forks

sexy femme fatale on bass, a cool “no muss, no fuss” guitarist and a showy drummer equals the dynamic, talented and fearless British Dependency. The Anguillan musicians and Anguilla Music Awards “Best Reggae Band” winners, British Dependency, released their debut album “Finding Wisdom” on November 20, 2013 to rave reviews. The 10 track album packed a punch and amassed fans all over the US, Europe, the Caribbean and Canada, sealing their place on the short list of talents to watch. “Finding Wisdom” showcased the band’s eclectic sound with love ballads such as “Fly Away,” “Do You This,” “Look Into My Eyes,” and empowerment singles, “One,” “Change,” “Wisdom,” “Casket Closed.” The album’s diverse offering was not only a perfect introduction of the band but also the island of Anguilla and the many talents rising up out of the small British territory. Likened to The Fugees, the success of the band’s 2013 album and promotional tour garnered the attention of legendary reggae band, The Wailers which yielded an invitation to embark on a three week, 14 city East Coast tour. from music lovers who attended the shows, The Wailers invited the band to join them on the West Coast to round out their U.S. run. British Dependency opened the West Coast leg in Arcata, California on February 21, 2014 with a performance at the Van Duzer Theatre at HSU with additional performances in Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Oregon and California. The strides the band was making could not have gone unnoticed and as a result, the Anguilla Tourist Board signed on as sponsor of both tours. Candis Niles, Director of the Anguilla Tourist Board stated, “The Anguilla Tourist Board is excited about this new opportunity that Anguilla’s musical ambassadors have created and earned by virtue of their outstanding performances on the East Coast. It’s truly amazing what they have been able to accomplish, and all of Anguilla is proud of them. We support them 100%, and we know that when they share Anguilla with fans throughout the West Coast, and beyond, by virtue of Social media, the story they tell is not just their own – it’s Anguilla’s story; one of Tranquility Wrapped in Blue.” But how will the group top their 2013/2014 success? Fast forward to January 2015 over a 12 day period, the group was held up in studio in Anguilla recording their untitled sophomore album. For this, they enlisted legendary producer Collin ‘Bulby’ York, who has worked with Brittney Spears, Madonna, Rihanna, Maxi Priest, Michael Franti, Jimmy Cliff, Chaka Kahn, Cindy Lauper and Boy George, to name a few and lead singer for the Wailers, Dwayne Anglin. Both were recruited by the band’s manager, Davon Carty, who knew both would bring an edge to what they had in mind and execute what they wanted. On working with the band Mr. York remarks, “the dynamic of the band is very different, unusual. They remind me of The Fugees or Black Uhuru. Very talented overall.” Mr. Anglin adds, “The project has great potential. It has surpassed our expectations.” The project is slated for release summer 2015. Until then, the band focuses their attention on performing, writing and breaking in new band member, Ishmael Levi.

OUR EDITOR CHIMES IN I have a combination of oily and dry skin so for me it is not only important that my foundation has SPF to protect my skin from the sun’ harmful rays but also moisture. For years, like millions of women I have tried countless brands and was never able to find a foundation that matched my complexion. Often, they were too dark which made my skin look grey or red or they were way too light. Just as I was about to throw in the towel, I read an article that said the key to finding and choosing the right foundation, was to first find out your complexion’s undertone. My what? An undertone is the color that’s just beneath the skin, and while your skin tone can change (over time, with sun exposure, etc.), the undertone does not. Foundations usually come recommended for one of three undertone types: “cool,” “neutral,” or “warm.” It’s possible, though, to fall somewhere in between (you could be “neutral-warm,” for instance). Ok, I’ll bite. . . I visited Sephora and with a nifty device a make-up artist advised that I have a Neutral undertone. Who knew! Armed with that information I set out with renewed hope that I would now be able to find the perfect foundation and I did, I found four – Lancôme, Makeup Forever, Cover FX and Prescriptives! It was like discovering a sacred relic – my world was forever changed. Well maybe I am being a little dramatic but those who have been on this quest understand my enthusiasm. That’s why when I was told we were doing this feature, I wanted to chime in. My hope is that this article does for you what that article about discovering your undertone did for me. Good luck!

lanning a life together with your significant other is exciting. That said, how do you have comfortable, stress-and-fuss-free conversations about finances with your partner? Below are discussion tips to get you started.

1. Plan the next five years.

A basics budget covers 5-10 necessities like housing, basic transportation to work (public), basic communication (inexpensive cell phone), utilities, food, healthcare, childcare etc. Agree on the minimum amount of money you’ll need to make your household run and decide how much each partner will contribute to ensure the basic expenses are covered.

What is each partner’s credit score? What can you do together to improve (or maintain) your credit score? Avoid being judgmental about your partner’s financial situation, however, explore options to protect yourself if your partner has high debt and/or a low credit score.

8. Make a list of free and low cost things you and your partner enjoy doing together.

Other than “that”, what do you like doing together? What free events are happening in your town? Hint: Google free or low cost events and your city name. Above all, be honest, tactful, and ready to compromise. Realize that people who grew up in two different households will have two different ways of approaching money. While one or both of you may have habits you need to change, there isn’t a single right way to manage your money. If you want a successful union, you have to chart your path together.

Hi-Five Continues to Grow Their Legacy By Jessica Lanice Chalmers

Legendary R&B group, Hi-Five is continuing their legacy while dealing with the lost of their brother and lead singer, Tony Thompson. Well-known for their ‘90s hits such as “I Like The Way (Kissing Game)”, “I Just Can’t Handle It” and “I Can’t Wait Another Minute”, just to name a few, they recently released their new romantic single “Different Kiss” from their critically-acclaim EP, Hi-Five The EP. “Different Kiss” was written and produced by Shanell Red Irving of Phatt House Entertainment in conjunction with Bronx Bridge Entertainment. I recently caught up with 3 of the 5 members of Hi-Five: Treston Irby, Billy Covington and Faruq Evans and they had this to share about their new single “Different Kiss.” “The lady wants something different. She’s been in a relationship for a while and is ready to take the next step,” said Treston. When asked how it was working with Shanell Redd Irving, who has written songs for Destiny’s Child, Charlie Wilson, Jaheim, and Faith Evans, Billy and Treston said “she is patient, allowed us to be ourselves, and helped capture HiFive sound.” Hi-Five sound has changed a bit. It is more grown and sexy. “Our sound and lyrical content has matured,” said Billy. “We want to make sure HiFive’s sound is easy and recognizable,” said Treston. With the passing of their lead singer, Tony Thompson, it has been hard for some of their fans to adjust to the change in members and the new music. However, Hi-Five wants their fans to know that none of the new members are replacing the original members and wants them to remember the legacy of Hi-Five and that it’s beyond the individuals in the group, it’s about the group as a whole. “If you hold on too long to the past, you can’t embrace the future. The name Hi-Five is bigger than any of the members,” said Billy. “The fans love the group. Each individual plays a part,” said Treston.

But when you consider the options of not only the mediums to achieve visibility for your brand, lets consider this for a second - who are you following and why and who is following you and why? Is the content shared, with us or by us, driving artistic, social or professional clout?
