In the battle for early diners seeking maximum value, Ristorante di Mare has upped the ante with an early dinner menu deal now scheduled to run through the end of the year. For $20, not only do you get a soup or house salad, a choice of six entrees, and a slice of Italian cheesecake, but the largest glass of wine currently being offered with any Vero early-dining program. On a recent Thursday evening, we again visited this year-old South Beach restaurant to see just how well you can eat and drink if you arrive before 6 pm. Upon arrival, owner Edyta Zana welcomed us back and escorted us to a table by the window. As we were being seated, she accurately recalled – as she apparently does with many returning guests – the entrées we had ordered on our last visit some months earlier. Amazing. Seconds later, one of the island’s friendliest servers came by to take our drink order. When we told him we would be trying the early dinner menu, he inquired as to our choices for our complementary glasses of wine. More…. Source: www.verobeachdiningguide.com

History of Vero Beach & Indian River County, Florida Long before Vero broke away from Ft Pierce, Vero Beach and the surrounding areas which would eventually become Indian River County were already thriving and forging their own destiny. The flow of settlers began about the mid 1840s according to the territorial census, and by the end of the century, new communities such as Sebastian, Wabasso, Gifford and Roseland had already been established. The greatest impetus to growth during these years can be traced to two events. The first was the creation of Henry Flagler’s Florida’s East Coast Railroad (FEC) which began service through Indian River County in 1893. It provided fishermen and growers of citrus and vegetable products with the fastest shipping possible to the northern markets. The FEC also accelerated land development. Companies purchased large tracts from the railroad (which had acquired the land from the state as part of the deal to build the railroad) and laid out entire cities - Fellsmere being the most familiar to county residents. A spur of the railroad was built linking Fellsmere to the main track in Sebastian. MORE...

JOSEPH A. KATARINCIC Autographing Too High A Price Wednesday, January 11th at 3 p.m. With increasing frequency, those charged with the responsibility for protecting public and private institutions have failed their obligations and are more concerned with exploiting than with serving. Rather than risk being ostracized, many find it easier and more beneficial to keep quiet and allow the cycle to continue. Thankfully, there are a few people out there willing to take the risk and make a stand. Based on real events, Too High a Price tells one such story. More‌..

For 20 years, Fellsmere has been the home of the Frog Leg Festival, an event that draws hungry people in rain, cold or sunshine. "We've had them standing with their umbrellas in the rain right at opening time ready for their frog leg dinners,‖. The four-day event kicks off Jan. 19, and organizers expect to serve 7,000 frog leg and gator tail dinners to 80,000 adventurous appetites from around the state and beyond. "It's just something people have a taste for," Sammons said. "I get a lot e-mails even after the event where some out-of-staters want to know what the following year's dates are going to be because they plan their vacations around it." Dinner proceeds through the years have funneled $500,000 into recreation projects. "We do it for the kids, it's just a giant fundraiser," Sammons said. "We give it all back to the community — it goes all the way from swimming lessons for children to athletic departments at the high school, to 4-H clubs.
