Henry K’s

A TEXAS-STYLE NIGHT ON THE TOWN THAT IS TRUE TO FLATONIA’S ICONIC ROOTS

Henry K’s is a beer and wine pub in the historic downtown area of Flatonia. Named after Philip Kipp’s dad who passed away many years ago, Henry K’s offers a relaxed atmosphere, ice cold drinks, live music, and plenty of southern hospitality to go around.

“We bought the building in 2015 and opened on Czhilispiel weekend, of all things, in October of 2016,” Jeannie Kipp, Philip’s better-half and co-owner of Henry K’s said.

Henry K’s looks like a 1980s bar with lots of pictures and vintage decor. There’s a pool table, vintage posters, taxidermied animals, and the original tin roof and cement flooring that came with the building, poured into ten-byfive squares - but it didn’t always look like this. Where the bar stands now was once an empty building that used to be a tractor showroom in the early 1900s.

“We have old and new in here,” Jeannie said.

Philip was a builder for many years. He was born and raised in South Dakota and then moved to San Diego and built all over the city before moving to central Texas where he began his next passion project.

“He built homes, banks and post offices and all kinds of things for years,” Jeannie recalled.

In addition to Henry K’s, Philip built all the homes on the ranch out in Moravia that the couple tends to daily. They live in the apartment in the back of the bar, but go back and forth to the ranch any chance they get.

“We just love it,” Jeannie said. “It’s just such a nice town. Just very friendly, there’s a lot of wonderful people out here and we always liked it as the best area in this community and we lucked out.”

Patrons of the bar feel the friendliness and love in return and keep coming back to visit.

“We have a lot of return out of towners,” she said. “People from all over the nation!

“We call it the living room. If people want to just come in and relax, and visit, and listen to music, and play pool and play cards, they can.”

And there’s no doubt that everyone is welcome to stop in and hang their hat for a spell.

“It’s just more of a small town, comfortable, come as you are type of bar,” Jeannie added.
