DEEP ROOTS

Historical Moulton, Texas COMMUNITY FINDS THEIR PLACE ON THE MAP IN 1836, LONG BEFORE CITY WAS INCORPORATED IN 1937 There was no organized settlement in the beginning. Separate families lived throughout the region in isolated cabins, each working the land they owned. Further settlement came to an abrupt halt in October 1835 with the “Come and Take It” Battle at Gonzales. People who lived in what was to become the Moulton area got caught up in the Texas Revolution as did most Anglo-Americans living in Texas. Soon after the Alamo fell, General Sam Houston abandoned Gonzales and burned the town so as to leave nothing of value for the Mexicans. On March 15, 1836 part of the Texas Army camped on the East Fork of the Lavaca River. Today a State monument on the present site of the American Legion Hall marks the approximate site. They only camped there for a short time, just long enough for a small black slave boy of six years to meet and speak with General Houston. That young slave, Mose Chappel, later went on to become one of Moulton’s oldest and most unforgettable citizens. No one knows exactly how the settlement actually got its name. One theory suggest that the community received its name from a native of Moulton, Alabama, who named it after his hometown. Another suggests that the community was named after E. L. Moulton, a pioneer settler. Yet another says the settlement was named after the small circular patches of oak trees called “motts” that abound the region.

In 1887 the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad Company laid out a spur from Yoakum northward to Waco. Soon after the construction of the railroad, a depot was built on the west side of the tracks and was called Topeka. Soon the little depot became the economic center of the area. In 1887 the first business opened in Moulton was a general store owned by Ed Boehm with later additions that also housed a saloon, barber shop and the post office. To handle the large influx of people arriving in the growing community during this period, the Samuel Moore family built the large 32-room Moore Hotel in 1888. The hotel operated until 1940 when it was demolished to make way for a new business, the Pundt’s Café that was later remodeled into the current Kloesel’s Steakhouse and Bar. Geographically speaking, Moulton lies in the heart of South Central Texas along the border of the Post Oak Belt and Gulf Coastal Plains. Must see sites in Moulton VISITORS WILL WANT TO EXPERIENCE ALL OF THESE MOULTON GEMS Texas saddlemaker and leather artist Don Gonzales runs Don Gonzales Saddlery with his wife, Claudia. Although Gonzales has a strong passion and a long history of building custom saddles, today it is the teaching of his craft that motivates him most in his work. “Five or six years ago, we started a YouTube account and kind of threw a few videos up there,” added Gonzales. “They got a few views and we had fun making the videos. Then we started offering a few patterns on our website and selling the digital file of the artwork, because learning to draw is the hardest part. I can teach anybody to do the leatherwork part but learning to actually do the artwork, that takes a lifetime to learn. Ha, I’m still learning! Recently, we’ve expanded to offering actual material packs and people can tie it in with a workshop video, making their own belt, wallet, purse or whatever. Listeners can also follow his podcast, Lost Trade with Don Gonzales, on Spotify or his website. The Veteran’s Memorial was donated to the City of Moulton by VFW Post 6971 and the Ladies Auxiliary. Landscaping for the Veteran’s Memorial was donated by the Keep Moulton Beautiful organization. It is located at 102 Veterans Drive.

A historical marker located at the downtown gazebo recognizes Adolph Hofner (1916-2000) for his role as a pioneer of western swing music. He was the first to record the classic Cotton-Eyed Joe in 1941. Sam and Will Moore Institute’s name honors brothers who gave site and half costs of building; the community matched their donation. The architect was H. Struve and the building contractors were Joel Meyer & Co. The Order of Sons of Hermann laid cornerstone July 31, 1901, in a gala celebration including a parade, band concert, barbecue, ball, and orations in English, German, and Czechoslovakian. The North wing was added in 1923. After laying the cornerstone on July 31, 1901, a great party ensued. The City Band and the Lone Star Band opened the

AREA ATTRACTIONS festivities at 10 a.m. for an estimated crowd of 5,000 enthusiastic celebrants. After a long parade, 21 head of cattle and several sheep were barbecued and 81 kegs of beer were consumed. A dance lasting until 2 a.m. concluded the celebration. A newspaper account of 1901 stated that enrollment the first year as 170. Today, the historic building still houses Moulton Independent School District students. Wondering what a visit to Rocky Creek Maze might be like? Well, just imagine wandering along more than 2.5 miles of paths in a eight-acre field of tall corn, trying to find your way through a giant puzzle! Sam and Will Moore Institute still houses public school students today.

Their unique brand of good farming fun is the perfect activity for kids, parents and grandparents. Or, if you’re interested in some spooky fun ... enter if you dare! In total darkness, stumble your way through the Haunted Trail and prepare yourself for a monstrous adventure. The haunted trail is separate from the main corn maze and takes place the last three Friday and Saturday nights in October. Rocky Creek also hosts Field Trips for school groups. They’ve partnered with Spookley the Square Pumpkin to promote bullying prevention. Students can walk a short trail through the corn to discover Spookley’s story and answer anti-bullying discussion questions.

Rocky Creek Maze is fall fun for the whole family. They are open every October and November.

The family also operates a dairy farm and bottles fresh unprocessed milk, offers artisan cheese and fresh yogurt - all made with their own milk. Be sure and bring your cooler. Dairy products are available every day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in their farm store, a cash or check self-service facility that operates as an honor box. loesel’s Steakhouse & Bar was born out of a love for good food and the desire to offer it to the people of Moulton. It all began when freshly married Harvey and Diana Kloesel moved to Houston in the late 1960s. Diana’s aunt and uncle Ducho owned a restaurant there, which she worked at during high school. Her exposure to the industry quickly became an interest that she and Harvey shared and they loved going out to eat together as often as they could. “If we had enough money to eat a steak, we ate a steak. And if we didn’t, we ate burgers. We came home to Moulton every weekend to see our parents on both sides of the family and there was no place to eat. We quickly realized we didn’t like living in Houston much anyway

and wanted to come home for good. So we decided to just open up our own restaurant,” Harvey reminisced. “There was a cafe where the post office is now that had shut down. It held 32 seats. We rented it and did some remodeling, but after about 6 months of being open we knew we had outgrown the space and decided to buy Pundt’s Café, which was the site of the Moore Hotel,” continued Diana. Harvey was a mess sergeant in the military for six years, where he went to cooking school and learned a lot about cooking for large groups. Diana’s aunt and uncle Ducho also helped with the fundamentals of running a restaurant and shared some family recipes that they still use today. Fifty-two years later, Kloesel’s Steakhouse & Bar has made a name for itself so noteworthy it has played a large part in putting the small town of Moulton, Texas on the map. Located between the railroad tracks and Highway 95 at 101 East Moore Avenue, the building’s historic roots are still serving its community today as a place to come together and rest their withers. Harvey and Diana still love to dine out together and use their expertise to hone in on flavors to keep their menu fresh. “We take our children and grandchildren out to eat a lot, sometimes to fancy

He was inducted into the TRA Hall of Honor at a ceremony held during the 2009 President’s Gala.

Their years of experience and commitment to quality have not gone unnoticed, as they have received numerous awards

There’s just something authentically Texan about a small-town tavern. An old bar stool, friendly faces, good music and cold beer come together to make one feel like they’re a part of an old, country song on the AM dial. From the first time you walk through the doors of Ole Moulton Bank, you’ll figure out pretty quick that this downtown gem checks all the boxes. Jim Mendenhall, owner of Ole Moulton Bank, discovered the historic structure by chance while on a search for an escape from the hustle and bustle of big city life. “I got tired of Houston and started looking for someplace out of town to start a little business,” Jim said. “I’d never heard of

MOULTON’S NIGHTLIFE Moulton but I found this place for sale and thought I’d go look at it. I ended up buying it and spent the next couple of years remodeling it because it had been an actual bank. It had false ceilings and old offices. We took out that false ceiling and also the wood paneling, exposing the original brick.” Jim had a guitar shop, Heights Guitar Co., in Houston for 22 years. He brought a multitude of vintage guitars with him to Moulton that are now displayed on the walls of Ole Moulton Bank. And it doesn’t take long to figure out that Jim is a musician himself and his new spot quickly became a hangout for musicians that he’d come to know while hosting a live music showcase at his Houston location, Dan Electro’s Electric Guitar Bar. “I knew a lot of folks from playing in bands all my life in Houston,” Jim shared. “So, when these folks found out that I moved to Moulton, they came out to play at my new place. We had live music for the first three years and then that grew into a jam on Thursday nights for local players. We did that for 15 years until last January.” Today Ole Moulton Bank’s manager and bartender is Nick Neskora and he’s filled that role for the past 15 years. In addition to being thankful for Nick’s helping hand, Jim is quick to recognize that it’s the people of Moulton and her visitors that make Ole Moulton Bank the favorite locale to swap stories and enjoy some ageless tunes. “Moulton is a wonderful town with wonderful people,” Jim said. “I love it here. Nothing’s going to change at Ole Moulton Bank. I’ve been here since 2001 and I love the area.” Ole Moulton Bank is located at 101 North Main Street in downtown Moulton. They’re open Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to midnight and on Saturday and Sunday from noon to midnight.

TEN-YEAR-OLD ANNABELLE ISCHY SHARES THE SWEETNESS OF HER SUCCESS, PLANS FOR THE FUTURE by Michelle Banse Stokes, photos by Emily Henderson Annabelle Ischy of Moulton may be only ten years old but she’s already accomplished something that some adults only dream of. Annabelle is an entrepreneur. She started her own business, The Chill Zone, where she serves snow cones to those seeking a break from hot summer days.

The profits from Annabelle’s work go towards projects that are important to her. You see, Annabelle and her family spent a year living in Papua New Guinea, a country in the southwestern Pacific. There she learned of a need to spread the love of Jesus Christ to the people that live there.

Annabelle worked hard babysitting to raise enough money to get started. She saved to buy a shaved ice machine and then her mom and dad pitched in to help buy necessary supplies. Annabelle opened The Chill Zone right outside her dad’s shop downtown.

“I give to the missions that work with the people in PNG,” Annabelle said. “I also give to my church and put money in my savings account.”

“My mom and my sister, Lauren, did most of the painting,” Annabelle shared. “Lauren also works with me at The Chill Zone. She shaves the ice. She does a good job.”

Annabelle has big goals. Annabelle is saving to one day buy a car and her own dog, a Siberian husky. She also wants to go to school to

KEEPING IT COOL be a chef. Today, she enjoys showing off her cooking skills for her family. “Being a chef is a challenge and I love challenges,” Annabelle added. “I enjoy making cookies and macaroni. I don’t really like boiling stuff but it’s part of cooking. My favorite thing to cook is anything that is really fun to make.” And Annabelle also has her favorites at The Chill Zone. “My favorite flavors are root beer and banana,” Annabelle said. “We have a lot of different flavors for everyone. It’s hard to decide what flavors to get. It takes me a long time to decide … like five minutes.” Annabelle has recently been named Young Miss Moulton and is part of the royal court. You might see her waving from the Moulton float in parades in neighboring towns. She also enjoys dance, gymnastics, softball, art, and soccer. Moulton Jamboree EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO COME OUT THE LAST FULL WEEKEND IN JULY The Moulton Jamboree, held every July at Moulton City Park, is an event that proves to be just as popular with the locals as it is with visitors. Drawing crowds from far and wide, the Jamboree includes free entertainment all weekend long. Festivalgoers will enjoy live entertainment from some of the best country and polka bands, car and tractor shows, state championship barbecue cookoff, arts and crafts, a softball tournament, cornhole tournament, carnival for the kids, pie baking, and fun contests. Meet Mr. Moulton LOCAL HISTORIAN ERNIE NOVOSAD TALKS MOULTON HISTORY, WORLDLY TRAVELS, AND TALL TALES by Michelle Banse Stokes, photos by Emily Henderson

Affectionately known as Mr. Moulton by the locals, Ernie Novosad is the de facto local historian in these parts. There are not too many people in the area that he doesn’t know and, similarly, there are not too many people in Moulton that don’t know this smiling man. You see, Ernie was a driving force behind documenting the history of the area for the benefit of many generations to come. To properly tell this story, we have to go back in time for a bit. Ernie is happy to share with anyone with the time to listen and recounts his early life in Moulton with a smile. “I think Moulton is interested in history and, years ago, I became the area’s historian,” Ernie said. “Back in the 1970s, I returned to Moulton after college and started teaching here. We’re a small school, so I taught chemistry and sometimes AP chemistry if there were enough students. I later taught science in upper middle school. I hold both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history and chemistry but, the funny thing is, I’ve never taught a history class in my life. History classes are usually the purview of coaches and not too many people can teach chemistry. So that’s how it happened.” Ernie would soon come in contact with a lady that would put the history portion of his degree to good use. “In the 70s, there was an elderly lady named Mrs. Anita Richter, who I consider to be my unofficial mentor,” Ernie shared. “She approached me about Old Moulton Cemetery

and some of Moulton’s historical markers. One of our senior classes took on the project of writing down all the names of the people in the cemetery and creating a rough map of where each tombstone was. Believe it or not, that map is still the one they use today. That got me going in it and I always liked history. On top of that, I was kind of a military nut. In fact, military history is my specialty. Put all of these things together and I was hooked on it.” Hooked he was. Soon Ernie was a part of a project that would prove to be bigger than he could have imagined. “Moulton didn’t have anything officially on record,” Ernie added. “Together with other local historians, we scratched together a history of the community. We decided to start the project of putting together a book. We didn’t know what we were doing and we didn’t have a business model. But we got help from all kinds of

people. We asked for donations of photos and we tried to make the book not just a dry history of the city. We had so many great photos but we couldn’t put them all in. The book was printed in hardback and we sold 400 copies in advance, which we thought was pretty good. Then all of a sudden, when the book hit, there were hundreds of people who wanted copies. We completed a second printing a few years later. That’s how I became the local historian, more or less.” Today, when Ernie isn’t answering phone calls from people wanting a historic tidbit on Moulton, he still keeps himself busy pursuing his passions. “I don’t have a sitting-behind,” Ernie said with a laugh. “I had a medical scare back in 2008 and I decided that I had enough years in (teaching) and I wanted to travel. We got a group together and traveled all over Europe. We did a few river tours, went down to Egypt, Rome, and Jerusalem … all parts of Europe. I’ve also been to Alaska and Hawaii, both of which are fantastic. I encourage anyone that wants to see some beautiful scenery that those are the places to go. After I did my traveling, I took on more volunteer work locally.” A storyteller by nature, Ernie is quick to share not only his historic tales of Moulton, but also of his escapades while traveling.

“In Alaska, we took a cruise up the Inside Passage,” Ernie said. “I’ll never forget my roommate snoring so bad. I just couldn’t stand it anymore, so I went out on the veranda. I was just sitting there in a lounge chair when, all of a sudden, there was this pod of humpbacks. They were singing to each other at two o’clock in the morning. You could hear it all over. “Then, in Hawaii, I got a little too close to a humpback. We were on a dinner cruise and not really anticipating anything. All of a sudden, there were these dolphins all over the place and people were running around taking pictures. As for me, I’d seen dolphins before so I wasn’t that interested. Then, on the left side of the boat, a baby humpback breached and everyone rushed to that side. I’m still standing on the right side of the boat and, just about the time I thought maybe I should go with the crowd, I suddenly hear a loud WHOOSH. I look down and saw its Mama. She breached and, when she did, she threw that spray down all over me. The captain yelled an obscenity that no passenger wants to hear and I could see why. She was so big! Her head was near the front of the boat and her tail was ten feet behind it. She was over 60 feet and she had a baby to worry about. If that baby squawked, she could flip us over. It was an adventure that I’ll never forget.”

Meet the Neighbors VISIT ALL OF THESE NEIGHBORING COMMUNITIES WHEN YOU STAY IN MOULTON FLATONIA - A charming town proud of their Czech and German heritage with beautiful landscapes, ranches and countryside surrounding the town. There are a wide variety of antique and gift shops, a pharmacy, and an old-world museum. Flatonia is still a well known and scenic spot for train watchers, boasting one of Texas’ longest standing, manually operated railroad switching towers with North-South, East-West cross rails. The 9-hole course at the Flatonia Golf Course facility features 3,056 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 36. The fairways are narrow and the greens are elevated. Flatonia Golf Course is located at 1245 East US Highway 90. SHINER - A short 10.2 mile drive and you’ll find Shiner, home of the Spoetzl Brewery. Brewery tours are $5 for all over 18. Free tours are offered for 18 and under, first responders, clergy, active military service members and veterans. Continuous tours are available Monday through Saturday, as needed, starting at 11 a.m. with the last tour starting at 3 p.m. No reservation is required and all ages are welcome. KOMENSKY - A farming community at the intersection of Farm roads 532 and 1295, Komensky was founded in May 1895 when a number of residents, primarily Czech, Moravian, and German newcomers to the area, met at the home of C. M. Karasek on Woods Prairie to plan the construction and operation of a school for their children. By 1915 it was recognized as a model for rural schools in Texas. Cotton was last grown in the area during the 1950s. PRAHA - Praha is home to one of Fayette County’s painted churches, The Assumption of the Virgin Mary Catholic Church, and is one of four churches on the tour. The church appears unassuming as you approach it, but as you enter the front doors prepare to have your breath taken away by the incredible beauty found inside. The churches on the tour are all active and do conduct services on Saturdays and Sundays. You may tour the churches Monday-Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., but please be respectful of any events or services that you may encounter. In addition, the church at Praha requests that all visitors be out of the church by 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Call the Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce at 979-743-4514 to schedule a tour.
