Casa Moderna, published in 5280 Home Magazine One of noted architect Burnham Hoyt’s early residential designs, 385 Gilpin is an iconic 1926 Spanish Colonial style home in Country Club Historic District that is a rare mix of historic exterior and fresh, modern interior. The home was brought back to life in 2011 with an expansion and renova- tion by Alvarez Morris Architectural Studio. Speaking to 5280 Home, Carlos Alvarez says of the project, “taking something old and bringing modern life to it—the contrast of the two ideas—can make both better.” And better it became with the addition of a wing on the south side devoted to a private main floor master bedroom suite with soaring ceilings that mirror the scale of original living room. Space was also added for a bright, open kitchen facing west with doors to the patio and art studio. The 2012 project took the house down to its studs to enable installation of new electric, plumbing, HVAC, drywall, stucco, roof, dug out basement and new family room. Special care was taken to preserve the grandfathered-in art studio with bathroom, the original garage doors (rare three car attached garage with bicycle bay), the two historic main doors, and 3 historic windows in living room. Very special indeed! Year of Construction: 1926 Year of Renovation: 2012 Bedrooms: Main Floor master suite and guest suite. Upstairs three bedrooms and two bathrooms. CO U N T RY C LU B H I S TO R I C One of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the Denver area, the Country Club Historic District “suffers not from the fluctuations of the real estate market,” says 5280 Magazine. Developed in the early 1900s at the same time as the Denver Country Club, it was first known as the “Spanish Suburb” because of its many tile-roofed homes and its distance from the city center (these days, just 10 minutes by car). Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and designated a Landmark District, prominent local architects William and Arthur Fisher and Jean Jacques Benedict created the area’s elaborate Denver Squares, Georgians, Mediterraneans, Spanish Colonials and Tudors. To complement the eclectic variety of homes, wide parkways and distinctive gates were designed to mark entry points to the neighborhood. The landmark designation is significant, as no project that alters a home’s exterior may proceed without comment from the Landmark Preservation Office. An oasis in the city, the neighborhood is made up of only 400 homes. Its location is spectacular, only steps from Alamo Placita Park and Cherry Creek’s “best of the best” shops, restaurants, art galleries, Farmer’s Market and the beloved Bike Path. Residents say they most love the proximity to downtown, the 4th of July Parade, the history of the homes and the beauty of the gardens, gates and flowers. Worry free bike rides for kids and and walks to friends’ houses make this neighborhood a good choice for families. Boundaries: 1st Avenue to 4th Avenue, Downing to University, Race to University, 4th Avenue to 6th Avenue Learn more about Country Club Historic District at www.countryclubhistoric.org.
