Vivienne Westwood: Magnetism Abundant

Richard Carroll

“Vivienne Westwood Magnetism Abundant”

Richard Carroll

Vivienne Isabel Swire was born, April 8, 1941, in Tintwistle, a village in the High Peak District of Cheshire, England. In 1957 she moved with her parents, Gordon and Dora to Harrow, a London borough twelve miles northeast of the city’s center where her parents managed a post office. She attended Harrow School of Art enrolling in a silversmithing course for one semester, then switching to a secretarial college, and finally studying to become a primary-school teacher at a teacher-training college. During her teenage years she would carefully evaluate used clothing to comprehend the technique of tailoring, and crafted her own clothes using store-bought patterns, and gathering ideas from her silversmithing course she created jewelry which she sold from a stall at the historic Portobello Road Market.

Vivienne met Derek Westwood in 1962, and they were married the same year, wearing a dress she designed. Benjamin was born in 1963 and three years later they separated when art student Malcolm McLaren moved into her life. She had her second son, Joseph Corré in 1967 with McLaren, and her two boys grew up together in London.

Birth of London’s Punk Rock Fashion

Her primary school teaching days ended in 1971 when McLaren became manager of the punk band the Sex Pistols. The couple opened a small shop on Kings Road in Chelsea, named Let It Rock, where they made drape coats, teddy boy trousers, and mohair sweaters. The now famed shop underwent numerous name changes, including Seditionaries and SEX, but nevertheless,

the shop became a favorite hangout for musicians and early members of the punk rock scene. Westwood and McLaren dressed the Sex Pistols and other punk rockers, replacing the long-haired hippie look with clothes ranging from platform shoes, slogan and lacerated, handwritten T-shirts that were often vexatious, as well as fetishistic bondage gear, and clothing displaying its construction with visible seams and labels, all of which went hand-in-hand with a growing counterculture that involved atypical hairstyles, and body modifications using cosmetics and showy jewelry. Westwood, like Coco Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton, and Emilio Pucci, never attended a fashion school and was self-taught, but with a matchless creativity and political visualization to upset the norm.

Beyond Punk

Westwood and McLaren expanded in the 1980’s to rave reviews with a series of fashion shows in London and Paris introducing Rocking Horse shoes and the Mini-Crini, inspired from the ballet Petrushka. She labeled the 1981-85 period “New Romantic,” and 1988-91 as “The Pagan Years” changing her style and creations from punk to Tatler girls wearing clothes that parodied the upper class. The partnership with McLaren was dissolved, but her reputation was growing using classic British tailoring, Scottish textiles, and the French style of embellished proportions. Following her first Paris show the critics credited her with the revival of the British fashion scene. Later, she introduced wedding gowns into her collection, one worn by Sarah Jessica Parker’s character, Carrie Bradshaw in the movie Sex and The City, as well

as producing 20 academic gowns for King’s College London, and, working with Richard Branson, creating uniforms for Virgin Atlantic. By December 2015, Vivenne Westwood Ltd had stores in the UK and 63 worldwide including: Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, and South Korea.

Political Edicts

Throughout Westwood’s successful career and despite her fashion empire developing into a multimillion-dollar company, she was front page material for her dynamic activism and undaunted by the consequences with her irreverent attitude towards the establishment. In 1989 she posed for a Tatler Magazine cover dressed as Margaret Thatcher, with a caption that read: “This woman was once a punk.” She later told Dazed Digital, “The suit she wore had been ordered by Thatcher but was then cancelled.”

In 1992 she was honored with an Order of the British Empire for services to fashion design from Queen Elizabeth II, and outside Buckingham Palace, she did a famous pirouette to a large crowd of photographers, revealing to all the world that she was not wearing underpants. But even so she was invited back for the designation of Dame Commander of the British Empire. In 2015 she drove a tank to the then prime minister, David Cameron’s home to protest fracking. Up until the end, Westwood wrote on issues of climate and social justice, cut off her hair to emphasize the threats of climate change, and campaigned in person for Nuclear Disarmament, she also appeared in a PETA crusade to support World Water Day and

vegetarianism, drawing awareness to the meat industry’s water consumption. In 2015 Westwood became involved with the Green Party donating 300,000 euros to the Party, and in a campaign in 2020 on World Earth Day, she supported the protection of forests with ethical fabric choices.

In 1992 Westwood married her second husband, former fashion student, Andreas Kronthaler. whom she met when teaching at the Vienna School of Applied Art, and in 2016 he became director of the brand. Upon her death he said, ” I will continue with Vivienne in my heart. We have been working until the end and she has given me plenty of things to get on with. Thank you darling.”

Fashion commentator Derek Blasberg wrote, “That while textbooks may remember Westwood for ushering in London’s counterculture scene to high fashion, I think she’d want to be remembered most for her advocacy, specifically global warming. Her life was aggressive, relentless, and fabulous. A total original.”

The name rolls off the tongue in a poetic and memorable ring, the resonance tantalizing the ear like a beloved song. Dusseldorf, a little over an hour train ride from Frankfurt is world removed, and refreshingly faithful to art and fashion. Overlooking the vast Lower Rhine River in the heart of Germany, the city is brimming with energy and vitality with an elevated living standard and a five-star lifestyle, eminent among the best cities in Europe.

The creativity swirling through the city on the wings of fashion designers and students, ongoing fashion trade shows, and fervent fashion boutiques, has taken hold in Dusseldorf, not unlike the fashion cities of Milan, Rome, Paris, and London. With four public and ten private universities as well as Gallery Dusseldorf, Breuninger, and Fashion Design Institute, the dominant fashion school in Germany, everyone seems to be young, and even the older Dusseldorf folks look youthful.

The destination is one of the country’s brightest stars, yet often bypassed thanks to a rather threadbare tourist trail. With sustainability an ongoing focus, and Germany being one of Europe’s top solar producers, Dusseldorf is a green city with gorgeous leafy parks and gardens, ponds with snooty swans, impressive art centers, grand palaces smartly converted to elegant museums, and designated bicycle lanes with a cycling community not yet on the level of Amsterdam but inching forward. Bicycles or not, Dusseldorf is a compact city the residents say just relax everything in the city is only 20 minutes away, which includes the neighborhood near the main train station, home to one of the largest Japanese communities in Europe, and thriving Old Town adjacent to the Rhine River.

Fashion, City Center

For a mid-sized city, Dusseldorf has the most attractive city-center fashion shopping street in Germany, if not all Europe. The hefty bouquet of fashion influence drifts through the city center on a silver chalice. Mile-long Konigsallee, called Ko by residents and visitors alike, is lined with Prada, Miu Miu, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior, Hermes, Armani, Fendi, Fashionette, Barbara Freres storefronts, and engaging fashion boutiques casting a huge presence in their shadows. Ko is separated by a large garden-like pond canopied with trees, small street bridges with Victorian-style lamps offering access to either side of Ko, while the island of green alters Ko as if it has been separated into two different streets. A visitor said, “It’s like shopping in a big park!”

Dusseldorf, Germany’s Fashion Capital

Dusseldorf Fashion Designers

Germany is the second largest fashion brand supplier in Europe with German-based designers, Escada, Addas, Hugo Boss, Adidas, and Joop, many of whom have instigated new processes to make their work more sustainable. A collection of Dusseldorf fashion designers enhance this significant economic cultural resource.

Drenched with soothing morning light, Marion Strehlow’s intimate atelier in the Oberbilk city district, in a ground floor complex where she both lives and works, inspires a feeling of creativity and inspiration. Her collection of unisex garments would fit naturally on Ko with their dark, earthy colors. Smiling, “I started from zero in 1998. I spent three years in fashion school and work with Italian fabrics, cotton and cashmere, and beautiful black cloth. I love to sew and create a garment from beginning to end, and make my own look, a look that is clean with unexpected hidden details, comfortable and classy to wear, and for all ages. I follow my heart and create garments that I love. I do have a clientele, and visitors can come to the studio if they call or email me.”stre-low.com,

“Don’t Panic It’s Organic” is Heiko Wunder’s call to sustainability. His Wunder{Werk} atelier and retail stores are a commitment to an absolute sustainable lifestyle and a fully organic fashion collection. He said, “My fabric is from Austria free of toxic chemicals, and it’s softer and more attractive, and good for your skin, and I use stone nuts in place of plastic buttons.” His casual clothing is classic, not trendy, with six retail stores throughout Germany. wunderwerk.com

Suzusan, is a Japanese family-owned fashion house in business for over 100 years. Creative Director, Hiroyuki Murase said, “I design the collection and they are manufactured in Japan by my family dating to the 5th generation with special age-old Japanese skills. Cashmere—a favorite.” His clothes have been worn by Natalie Portman and created for Dior. suzusan.com

Stephanie Hahn’s stylish Live Lab Studios in the Loretto district, is brimming with energy. She said, “It’s new energy. I’m always looking for new designers and young people who can gather here and share their ideas. Fashion is a tough life, it’s not glamourous. It’s demanding work. Hahn was born in Dusseldorf and spent time in France, but her collection is handmade in Germany, and has been shown at Paris Fashion Week. Coats and unisex jackets are highlighted in the Hahn collection. She said, “I need to touch the material and see how it feels and falls.” Sustainability is important; avoiding chemicals, reducing over production, and creating biodegradable goods is the future. livelabstudios.com

Rancho La Puerta - Fitness Time Spectacular

Amongst the steamy world of fitness centers, Rancho La Puerta proudly stands alone, not on a fancy pedestal, but in a yoga position gathering her eager guests in a warm embrace, offering them a light assuring kiss on the neck, and heart-warming encouragement while instructing them to breathe deeply, expand the rib cage, tighten the waistline, and make their minds and bodies better places to be.

I had read about the famed Rancho La Puerta and greatly excited, I will finally experience the queen of fitness centers. The Ranch is a short three miles from the U.S. border in Baja and 45 miles southeast of San Diego. With my magazine’s creative and talented beauty expert, Tiaja Pierre, we flew to San Diego where transportation was waiting to drive us to the border, passports required. We drove past Tecate, an earthy, easy going Mexican border town noted as the home of Tecate Beer, and entered Rancho La Puerta. My first impressions of the fitness center is it’s not a Ranch at all but a glorious desert garden, appearing as if an artist magically swept a paint brush saturated with the colors of the rainbow across the high desert landscape leaving a living work of art to be cherished.

Finding A Sense Of Solace

The magnificent and sequestered 4,000-acre oasis of gardens and pastures is tucked away at the base of Mt. Kuchumaa. Straddling the U.S. Mexico border, the summit rising to 3,885-feet, the mountain is the first physical geological feature in the United States to be recognized as a National Historic Site. But most importantly, considered a sacred site for healing and peace by the Kumeyaay people. Boulder-strewn, the mountain is flanked by an astonishing 40 miles of hiking and walking trails, a six acre working organic farm delivering garden-fresh fruit, herbs, and vegetables to the Rancho La Puerta kitchen, and appropriately the location of the Culinary Center and the Ranch’s admired Cooking School. We shared a garden-like hacienda-style casita that was carefully placed with a view of Mt. Kuchumaa, designed with tile floors, beamed ceilings, Mexican art, wood burning fireplace, and two beds draped with quality linens and comfy robes too. I adored the patio where you can sit quietly, reflect and meditate, and feel the goodness of the setting. A perfect sanctuary for me and a world removed. Thankfully, a television and radio are not to be found, fluttering songbirds, owls, and roaming coyotes, supply the desert night music, which is a lovely timeless serenade. The Ranch, as the fitness center is affectionately called, has a sweetness that permeates the air, and a warm feeling of community. For the guests, many of whom are repeat visitors, the emphasis is not on losing weight during the week but improving eating habits, and lifestyles. A week here avoids a month in the hospital, and it’s a pause in time to find yourself, and reset your body and mind.

Rancho La Puerta - Fitness Time Spectacular

The World’s First Fitness Spa

In 1940 founders Edmond and Deborah Szekely named the spa in Spanish, “Ranch of the Door” for two massive oak trees that were once the door and entrance to the original meager beginnings. Ingenious health and spa visionaries, and eons ahead of their time, the Szekely’s built what is often referred to as the world’s first authentic and far-reaching spa. The Ranch has been a smash throughout the years with more awards than walls to display them. They also opened the upscale and acclaimed Golden Door in 1958 in northern San Diego County as a sister spa.

When we checked in for the week we received a Programming Sheet listing classes and activities, with times and locations, and hiking choices for all levels. With fresh confident spirits we interpreted the character of a new day. I quickly realized that Rancho La Puerta is far removed from the typical spa. They offer wide-ranging organic and holistic skincare and spa treatments with highly trained masseurs, their own line of sustainably harvested plants and herbs, 47 treatment rooms for wraps of heated linens immersed in indigenous herbs, aromatherapy scrubs, facials and scalp therapies, but the spa treatments are only a touch of the modern day Shangri-La. The Ranch is a nature-lovers dream geared towards guests who want to unplug, decompress, and focus on health and fitness within a natural venue.

Movement Uppermost

An instructor shared with us that movement and an active lifestyle is a top component for a lifetime of good health. There is a voluminous selection of fitness classes, hikes, and water programs such as Water Jogging, Holistic Water Therapies, and Swim Clinic in addition to Pickleball, presentations about psychology, activities and consultations.

Throughout the Saturday-to-Saturday week there are 50 different indoor and outdoor innovative classes, such as Pilates with Reformers and mats, yoga, T’ai Chi, aqua exercise classes, strength training with or without weights, cardio-cycling, circuit training, dance classes, stretch and posture, breathing, and so much more. We were informed that the Ranch offers five classes every hour on the hour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., each day of the seven-night booking, if you so desire, and some are sequential to advance a guest’s skills. Each day, with movement in mind, we walked three to four miles, the sun beating a quick ceaseless tempo. With the turn of a leaf, I could smell rich streams of scents in the yielding soil, the air tasting spicy and fresh. A bird sending a song faraway in the silence, while the mountain secretive against an intense deep blue sky. One morning with brilliant threads of sunlight, Tiaja raved about her three hour, Seven-Mile Mountain Breakfast Hike over steep, mountain terrain, with a delightful breakfast break.

We both enjoyed numerous classes and presentations. Among those were a fun and easy to follow Hip Hop class and a presentation titled “It All Starts With You” by Denise M. Dudley, a trainer, author, business consultant and founder of Skill Path Seminars. Additional highpoints were a chocolate class titled Bean to Bar, by Diego Ceballos, originally from Caracas, Venezuela, and with years in the world of chocolate, he enlightened us the intricate details of how cocoa is grown, harvested and processed.

Rancho La Puerta - Fitness Time Spectacular

One evening at La Cocina Que Canta, the Ranch’s large cooking school and culinary center set in the heart of their organic farm, we joined a cooking class led by Chef Palma Bellinghieri, born in Mexico City, who studied in Montreux, Switzerland. and the daughter of famed Sicilian born Chef Alfredo Bellinghieri who cooks in “Alfredos”, his renowned Mexico City restaurant. Chef Palma, award honored, specializes in vegetarian cooking and shares her expertise both at the Ranch and in San Diego. Palma is a delightful teacher with tips and technique to remember.

Fearless Dining

The Ranch’s cuisine, breakfast, lunch and dinner, was another feel-good experience for me, my body frequently whispering to me, thank you. Most of the food is grown on the ranch farm and hand-picked. Everything was fresh, healthy, and quite delicious although my body did go through a little sugar detox. The entree servings are mostly organic vegetarian with a choice of seafood, five times a day, sourced from the local Ensenada, Mexico fish market, a two hour drive from the Ranch. An unusual event is the weekly Silent Dinner, meaning no conversation at the table, not even, pass the water, but with background sounds from crystal bowls that focus on the physical and mindfulness center of the body.

I found the balance of mind, body and spirit is truly in place at the Ranch, and it’s exhilarating to report Rancho La Puerta deserves it’s high ranking and many awards. For me it was a week of well-being and healthy thoughts that hopefully I can retain for a lifetime.

Of Note

The Ranch is planning to build on their 4,000-acre land, 108 custom, Mexican-style private homes encompassing sustainability, lush landscaping, and following a legacy of health and wellbeing.

The Brown Palace

Trisha Ventker

The Brown Palace

I moved to Colorado about 15 years ago with my family from Manhattan. My husband and I are always looking for interesting historical landmarks in downtown Denver, we frequently head there for some culture and culinary delights, along with an occasional weekend staycation at one of the hotels. One hotel that we had visited recently was The Brown Palace.

Let me begin by saying that it was a truly magical weekend and incredible experience that has me singing (well not literally) its praises and will have us coming back for future visits.

As we made our way thru downtown Denver and turned onto Tremont Place from Broadway, the massive structure in the Richardsonian Romanesque style makes an immediate impression, with red granite and sandstone exterior setting it apart from the surrounding structures. The Brown Palace Hotel & Spa has been a stately Denver landmark for more than 130 years. The next thing that strikes you are the incredible uniforms worn by the valets and bellman at the entrance of the hotel. Their exquisite styling compliments the historical richness of the hotel and give you an indication of what you may find once you pass through the entrance.

As you make your way to the reception, you are immediately struck by the magnificence of the stunning eight-story atrium with a stained-glass ceiling in Italian Renaissance style, which is at the heart of the hotel. As you look up, down, and around, it is almost architectural sensory overload, including the rare golden onyx from Mexico, which lines the interior. However, it all works incredibly well together. We quickly checked in and left our bags with the Bellman, as we had planned to attend the Saturday morning Historical Hotel Tour.

The hotel was named for Henry Cordes Brown, the 19th of his father’s 20 children and a carpenterturned-real-estate entrepreneur from Ohio. He arrived in the gold rush town of Denver in 1860 and purchased several acres of land. As property values skyrocketed, he built his fortune. People from all over the country were still flocking to the West, seeking their fortunes in gold and silver. Everyone stopped in Denver, either on their way to-or-from the mountains. Some settled; some moved on, but all needed a place to stay. Work on The Brown Palace officially began in 1888, and no expense was spared for the creation of Brown’s “Palace Hotel” on the unique triangular piece of land, and in fact, it was the first steel skeleton structure in Denver. In all, it took four years to build, was Denver’s tallest building at the time and cost a staggering $2 million.

After the tour we headed to our room which was modernally appointed with amenities like plush terry robes and pure artesian water from their own well. We quickly unpacked our overnight bag and headed down to the atrium for Afternoon Tea, a long-standing tradition at The Brown Palace Hotel & Spa for more than a century. Sitting in the in the warm light of the atrium lobby, listening to the soothing sounds of a pianist, whilst enjoying a hot pot of tea and lots of wonderful tea sandwiches was an experience I could get used to. Although I have been primarily a coffee drinker, I now have a newfound love for tea, which is served from engraved silver teapots in specially commissioned Royal Doulton bone china. The tea is complemented with house-made scones that are served with Devonshire clotted cream shipped in from England, alongside savory tea sandwiches, and a decadent selection of classic and chocolate tea pastries. My favorite was the curried egg salad sandwiches.

It was time to experience a scheduled massage at the hotel’s 5,200 sq. ft. luxury spa. While I enjoyed an incredibly relaxing massage at the Spa, my husband relaxed and enjoyed the beautiful room. After my massage, I stayed for a bit in the relaxation area to rehydrate with the lemon infused water and browsed through one of the coffee table magazines.

Palace Arms is a truly a one-of-a-kind restaurant. We had been there for our anniversary dinner on multiple occasions. However, after the Historical Hotel Tour, we had newfound appreciation for all the room’s decor. The main dining room is decorated with antiques dating to Napoleonic times. Among the flags, weapons, uniforms and ornaments, is a set of flintlock dueling pistols that belonged to Napoleon and his second wife, Louisa, and extremely rare goldplated French eagles that were used in his celebrations. The service and culinary delights served up by the chef live up to the expectations. Recipient of “Best of Award of Excellence” from Wine Spectator and consistently rated as one of the best downtown Denver fine dining experiences, Palace Arms can easily be considered the hotel’s crown jewel.

After discussing our experience, reviewing our notes, and watching a little bit of TV, we enjoyed an extremely relaxing night’s sleep in the incredibly comfortable bed. The pillowtop mattress had us fully refreshed in the morning. Upon using the in-room amenities after showering, I had to inquire further about the “bee” products I found in the bathroom. While past guests have included royalty, it turns out that the hotel has its own resident queen, five of them actually. The property is the first hotel in Denver to nurture a colony of rooftop bees. Five hives, each with its own clever name, including “Buzzingham Palace,” are maintained by a dedicated Palace beekeeper. The honey is used in a line of sweet-smelling spa products and in-room amenities, as well as in afternoon tea, seasonal recipes and cocktails, and in a unique Brown Palace craft beer.

Whether you are from Colorado and looking for a weekend staycation or traveling from out of town (DIA is only 22 miles away and easily accessible in 25–45 minutes depending on transportation means), make sure to put The Brown Palace Hotel & Spa on your list of places to see, dine at, and stay at. Our stay was quintessential in every way and we look forward to visiting The Brown Palace Hotel & Spa in the future.

At 130 years and counting, The Brown Palace Hotel & Spa is Denver’s longest continually operated hotel, first opening its doors on Aug. 12, 1892. A visit is an experience of authenticity, exactly like nothing else. Although many changes have taken place over its rich history, one thing remains constant: the grandeur and grace of the city’s most elegant, iconic hotel.

Michael Moore Hydrate!

The winter season is in full force. As well along with the season comes the seasonal skin, DRY! Parched and dehydrated. First, think about the cleanser you are using to wash your face and body. Hyaluronic acid helps bind moisture to the skin and can even be found in your cleansers. Creamy cleansers are needed to start the transformation.

Moisture: think fat-based moisturizers: our bodies absorb fat easily, so they will do the same on the surface of your skin. A balm is the bomb at this time of the year.

Makeup needs to be super powered. Makeup needs to moisturize the skin as well as give the skin color. This is not the time of year to think about putting powder on dry skin. Think about cremes, crème blush, bronzing balms, tinted lip balms, and SPF enhanced lip glosses for all the winter sports.

Simple little changes can make your skin more comfortable throughout the season. Add a beauty oil to your current moisturizer. This will give that moisturizer a bit of a “superpower.”

The winter season seems to last forever with dry skin. Drink water, eat foods rich in omega fatty acids and add a lot of vegetables to your diet.

You can do this winter season and do it successfully!

GRAF VON FABER-CASTELL’S GUILLOCHE INDIA RED

Faber-Castell, one of the world’s largest and oldest manufacturers of pens, pencils, art and office supplies, was founded in 1761 and has a fascinating history.

The writing instruments in the Guilloche series are made to accompany us through everyday life in style and to help us rediscover the charm of our own handwriting.

The coloured Guilloche writing instruments made of precious resin are distinguished by a special process. Each one is engraved individually using a method otherwise reserved for jewellery or silver accessories. The barrel is then repeatedly lacquered and polished by hand. The result is a unique and most interesting surface texture: no two writing implements are identical: each is an individual example of the craftsman’s art.
