The Other Side of Emmanuel Sanders by A Precious Child

Hundreds of children, ranging from elementary to middle school ages, gathered around Denver Broncos wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders on the Thomas Jefferson High School football field. “You can be anything you want to be,” Sanders told them. “Do you believe that?”

They excitedly shouted back in unison, “Yeah!”

She is an Executive Board Member of A Precious Child’s Women’s Guild, a group of influential women dedicated to raising awareness of and resources for the organization, allowing A Precious Child to impact even more children in the Denver community.

“I love A Precious Child because what they’re doing for the Denver community is just amazing,” said Emmanuel Sanders. “Going into their facility and seeing people putting clothes into their shopping carts and everything is free. The concept, the idea, the positive energy behind it… we both share the same goal in trying to help the Denver community be better.”

As part of his two-day summer football camp, Sanders teams up with A Precious Child to provide an opportunity for kids to learn new football and leadership skills, have fun and feel inspired. He also uses it as a way to give back to the community.

“With Emmanuel as one of our Celebrity Ambassadors, we’ve been able to partner with him for the past four years to send hundreds of children in need to his camp through our giveSPORTS program,” said Brittany Polinski, Vice President of Programs and Evaluation at A Precious Child. Through their partnership,

200 kids, who otherwise couldn’t afford the fee, were able to participate in Sanders’ camp for free this year.

10-year-old Carl, a giveSPORTS recipient, said by the end of camp he felt more confident. “I high-fived him and now I have his superpowers,” he said. “I feel awesome!”

Sanders and his family engages in A Precious Child’s mission in multiple ways, by donating sports equipment through his foundation and using his platform to inspire community members to get involved with A Precious Child’s work. Gabby Sanders, Emmanuel’s wife, is an integral part of A Precious Child’s growth.

What was the catalyst in you starting your foundation?

The Emmanuel Sanders Foundation was created to help under privileged kids in the community. I want to be able to help provide these kids with the resources and support to attain a better life, succeed and live out their dreams. Whether it be school supplies, sporting equipment or funding sporting fees. Growing up I wasn’t

able to participate in sports, have the proper school supplies or clothing due to financial constraints. I just want to be able tohelp as many kids as I can, who are facing the same issues I had growing up.

I have foundation events throughout the year that anyone can purchase tickets to and attend. We have fundraisers and auction off signed memorabilia and

work and dedication I beat all the odds against me. For me to have come this far and have the blessing to say I’m a Super Bowl 50 champion or it’s my 10th season in the NFL makes me and my family proud. I overcame adversity and that’s what I’m most proud of.

What do you want your Legacy to be? What are you most proud of?

Of course I want to be remembered as one of the greatest receivers, who gave my all to the game, but more importantly I want my story to inspire people to believe in themselves. Even when others don’t and the odds are against you.

Everything is attainable with the right mindset and the will to work hard. I want a kid to be able to see me and say “Because he did it, I can too”. I come from very small town in Texas. Bellville- where the population is 4500 to 5000 people. I grew up in poverty and didn’t have much resources or the proper guidance to make it. Through hard

stablished in 2012, Von’s Vision is the charitable foundation of Broncos All-Pro Linebacker and Super Bowl MVP Von Miller. The

mission of Von’s Vision is to provide low-income Denver children with the eye care and corrective eyewear they need to be their best in the classroom and in life. Miller was inspired to begin Von’s Vision as a result of his own nearsightedness, which plagued him throughout his childhood. Without glasses, it was impossible for him to play sports and keep up in school. With glasses, it was hard for him to maintain a positive self-image. Through Von’s Vision, Miller is not only giving the gift of sight, but by providing high-end frames that resemble his own sense of style, he is making kids feel cool to wear their glasses, helping them go from “the least to the beast.” Through numerous community outreach programs, including Von’s Vision Day and Von’s Vision Center, Von’s Vision has provided the gift of sight to more than 8,500 students. School, Kareem went to play college football at Alabama under Coach Nick Saban. After his successful college football career, Kareem was drafted in the first round by the Houston Texans.

cer survivor and his sister having battled leukemia as a child, Kareem knows firsthand the impact that cancer has on the lives of its’ victims and their families. It is these experiences that led Kareem to establish the Kareem Jackson Foundation. Kareem established the foundation in 2016 to impact the lives of families with seriously and chronically ill children through daily encouragement and life changing experiences while honoring and supporting women who are battling – and those who have achieved victory over – breast cancer. THE ARMSTRONG HOTEL

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Fort Collins and stay at one of the few venerable stately hotels left in town.

Established in 1923, The Armstrong has stood on South College Street entertaining nearly a hundred years worth of visiting guests in a variety of manners. Undergoing its most recent renovation during the early months of 2019, the great old inn is in full swing with resounding reservations throughout the summer months. I felt the warm and inviting vibe as soon as I entered the front doorway, taking notice of the lobby. From the contemporary furniture and decor to the obvious artful respect for the old west and its indigenous inhabitants, I felt at home and “appropriate”, if that’s possible.

As I booked a suite, I was equally taken by the staff’s inviting behavior. Watching other workers accommodating guests to their rooms, I commented to one, who just smiled and quietly nodded in affirmation.

I immediately got the impression that not only did this young woman really enjoy

working at the hotel, the whole staff also seemed to love their work! As we walked to the elevator, she said with confirmation, “It’s a fun place to be; everyone has fun here!”. Just what I wanted to hear.

The great decor of the rooms with the shades of gray and off white that only calms the traveler instantly also highlights the beautiful white and beige woven wall hangings and framed portraits and small tasteful mirrors, positioned over the bed and queen- sized pullout couch in the living room area. The beautiful hardwood floors accented by the Native American motif area rugs and vertical, standing, old-style, classic radiators beneath the gorgeous windows really caught my eye! Perfect contrast from one room to the other does The Armstrong offer its customers, relaxing effortlessly with great decorative surroundings to visually enjoy.

When I settled in, I was pleasantly surprised reading the room’s brochures with some drinking and dining options inhouse. Since it was after four and a tad before dinner time for me, I continued to unwind in a Fort Collins “Institution” Ace Gillett’s Lounge. With its incredible variety of exotic cocktails, great tap beer and scrumptious menu, I decided to have drinks there, enjoying the live jazz music. Feeling a bit risky, I ordered “The Strong Mash” which is comprised of the infamous “killer liquor” Absinthe, Honey, Gin, Lemon, Mint and Berries. Wow! The powerful drink did I sip as per my great barkeep’s suggestion. Again, this unusual drink really complemented the three-piece jazz combo for the duration of happy hour from four to six. Then it was time for dinner. I walked several blocks to Metro and enjoyed a few small plates, Asianglazed pork wings and a crispy brussels sprouts salad. Both were excellent.

Although the hotel offers complementary bicycles to its guests, I decided to take the popular rapidly growing Fort Collins “Brew Cruise” and Tour of three local breweries in the city. After my awesome visit to nearby Horsetooth Reservoir, walking for more than an hour, I certainly built a thirst. Not really a beer drinker, myself, I let the choice of three breweries to the tour guides when I arrived. They chose The Odell, Horse and Dragon and The Funkwerks Breweries on our tour. During and afterwards, I was quite satisfied, to say the least! The tour guide was excellent with great knowledge of the entire town and history of the three breweries he chose. Each cruise is moderately priced including the rental of a great mountain bike, helmet, lock and water bottle.

After a quick refreshing shower back at the hotel, I headed to New Belgium for another tour. New Belgium Brewing Company is a 100% employee-owned craft brewery located in Fort Collins, Colorado and Asheville, North Carolina.

New Belgium is the maker of the nationally popular Fat Tire Amber Ale and many other craft beers. It opened in 1991 by Jeff Lebesch and Kim Jordan and the main brewery is based in Fort Collins.

Later I was farm-bound, Jessup’s Artisan Farmhouse Tour to be exact - another recommendation by my friends who visited.

The 128 year-old farmhouses, recently and readily remodeled are a beautiful unique way to shop and dine a few blacks from The Armstrong Hotel area. From the beautiful new antique shops to the boutique food and clothing stores, to the coffee shops, the breweries and eating establishments, The Artisan Village is a great place for some great buys and a light lunch (or any meal for that matter)!

Again, Amy recommended The Silver Grill for breakfast and I forgot to get there, so I headed over to order one of their famous cinnamon buns and it was heavenly!

Since I had a reservation for Cache in Ginger and Baker at seven, I ate lightly and headed back to The Armstrong for some restful work-related downtime.

I loved the solitude of the suite, as I plugged in my laptop and quietly got to work - formatting the magazine layouts, of which one, you’re reading from right now! Although I really love working from home, this was a great change with literally no distractions whatsoever.

Come six-thirty, I was raring to go again and headed for Ginger and Baker. For over 100 years, the historic Mill has been a Fort Collins staple and gathering spot.

Back in the day, farmers, ranchers and townsfolk swapped stories and bought feed and supplies. Today, locals and visitors come by for a warm welcome along with breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktails, cooking classes and a darn good piece of pie. The Cache serves up Colorado style with locally sourced beef, bison, fish, game, produce and more.

The terrific menu really ended my second day nicely! The incredibly huge filet mignon with potatoes, shallots, heirloom carrots, asparagus in a marrow demiglace and the glass of Merlot was memorable, for I feasted until dessert. As recommended the mile high choclate pie and coffee ended my evening and my second incredible night’s sleep concluded my stay at the Armstrong.

Between the eating and the exercise, I really felt great when I woke the next morning and a little remiss to say goodbye to the great edifice and its kind and accommodating crew.

So, come and visit and say hello to Oreo, the hotel cat who’s probably asleep behind the check-in desk or anywhere else for that matter and enjoy one of Fort Collins’s top 5 hotels. Personally, I rate it even higher after only one visit and two great days and nights. See for yourselves! Enjoy! I certainly did!

When people think of their role model, they often find themselves thinking of someone older than they, an authority figure or someone famous; someone who can teach them something.

Rarely do people think of a child. “They are so young and still have so much to learn; how could they be my role model?” In Colorado, you don’t have to look far to find impressive young role models. Colorado is home to a dynamic group of girls who are changing their communities and “moving mountains” with the skills gained through pageantry.

Over the years, and through reality television, pageants have exhibited a general stereotype of little girls parading with fake hair, fake teeth, wearing outfits and makeup that make them look like they are 20 years older heading for a night out in Vegas. It is showcased as competition based around vanity and beauty; not who they truly are. Oftentimes people think of the cutthroat competition where the girls are out for blood trying to sabotage their competitors or think of pageant girls who are just a pretty face, describing her perfect date as “April 25, because it’s not too hot, not too cold, all you need is a light jacket.” Unfortunately, a large part of the population look at all pageants this way, when in reality, not all pageants are created equally.

In Colorado, there is a large group of girls who is changing that stereotype - one volunteer hour at a time. Pageantry is so much more than a pretty face. True pageantry isn’t based on beauty, but instead it revolves around the whole person, their core values, their manners, the impact they make on their communities, their academic success and involvement, how they present themselves in a positive manner. Skills learned through pageantry are true lifelong skills that create leaders in our world. These are girls who aspire to find a cure for a rare disease, they are inventors and influencers - girls who will advocate for those who have no voice; they are role models.

You may now be wondering “what exactly is a pageant if it’s not judged on beauty?” . In the most reputable and successful pageant systems, the judging is broken down into several categories with interview being the most important, carrying the heaviest weight of the score. Each pageant is different, but has similar categories including evening gown and fun fashion, but never swimsuit. They are scored not on their beauty but how poised they are and how well they present themselves.

Oftentimes you will find optional categories that include talent. A pageant is basically a really fun interview for who will be the best role model and who will make the most impact on the world around her.

The lifelong skills learned through pageantry can’t cohesively be found anywhere else.

Training for a pageant is like a career boot camp where the girls learn how to interview and gain the confidence needed to speak in front of a large group of people. They learn problem solving, how to work well with others and be a leader. So many of these girls have their own non-profit organization before even becoming a teenager. They learn entrepreneurial skills, budgets and fundraising. They learn how to be genuinely supportive instead of competitive with each other. They form a bond and are true sisters, who all have the same goal of making a difference in the lives of others.

Recently, we got together with local girls from seven different systems who carry International, National, State and Local titles. These girls assembled for a fun gathering to promote positive pageantry. It was the first time they were able to get together as a group once returning home to Colorado from competing in national and international pageants over their summer break. These “sister queens” can’t simply get together just for socializing; they have to turn any opportunity into a service project. As of these girls were arriving with school supplies, canned goods and new socks to donate to local organizations. Collectively, these nine girls have logged over 500 community service hours in this past year alone. Colorado girls are definitely making their mark in the world and moving mountains.

Claude Monet: The Truth of Nature features about 120 works spanning the artist’s entire career

DENVER – The Denver Art Museum (DAM) will be home to the most comprehensive U.S. exhibition of Monet paintings in more than two decades when it presents Claude Monet: The Truth of Nature, in the fall of 2019. The exhibition will feature about 120 paintings spanning Monet’s entire career and will focus on the celebrated French impressionist artist’s enduring relationship with nature and his response to the varied and distinct places in which he worked.

Co-organized by the DAM and the Museum Barberini in Potsdam, Germany, Denver will be the sole U.S. venue for this presentation from Oct. 21, 2019 through Feb. 2, 2020.
