CYRUS WEINBERGER AND SOARING HEIGHTS

I can still remember the stinging sensation in my nostrils from the sweet-smelling smoke of the burning rice fields. I can hear the shrieks of the monkeys in the trees and the nightly throaty calls of the geckos living in the bathroom behind the water basin. I can remember the water buffalo on the dirt streets of the village and the neatly coiled Malaysian krait viper in the back corner of the kitchen. I remember the smiles and laughter of my students and their families. But what I remember and cherish most about this experience, is learning what it feels like to make a positive contribution to a community through education. My journey as an educator began when I taught English for one year after college in the Wang Prong region of Thailand. However, my desire to reform the learning environment began much earlier. As a kid growing up in Brooklyn and Manhattan, I was bright and active – some might even say hyperactive. I was a late reader, a clown, and a troublemaker who spent much of my time in the principal’s office. My academic career was on a downhill slide until I made a critical discovery: I was a great runner – fast and competitive. Not only did my success as a runner boost my self-esteem, it made me feel much calmer. I was able to focus and concentrate better, and, miraculously, my academics began to improve.

FEATURE I eventually graduated from Whitman College with a major in Philosophy. After Whitman, I travelled throughout the world, including living in New Zealand and Thailand. Upon my return to New York City from Thailand, two things were certain. I wanted to move out west and I wanted to become a teacher. In 1999, I received an MA in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Colorado. I was fortunate, as any skier, fly fisherman or mountain biker knows, to get a job as a 4th grade teacher at Riverview Elementary in Durango, CO. While I loved teaching, I still had the reform itch. In 2005, I returned to school to get an Ed.M in School Leadership at Harvard. While in Cambridge, MA I had the opportunity to work for Education Matters evaluating Special Education Programs. In 2006, I became the assistant principal of Superior Elementary and then became the principal of Ryan Elementary in 2008.

When I became an administrator, it was my opportunity to be a part of educational reform. I remembered the remarkable change that running had made on my academic life. As I delved into the research, I realized that it wasn’t a miracle, but actually the effect of exercise on the brain that facilitates learning. I read the book by Dr. John Ratey, one of the chief researchers on the subject. Dr. Ratey’s book speaks of the astounding success of school systems like Naperville, Illinois, where daily aerobic exercise was an essential part of their school day. The idea of creating such a program kept buzzing around in my head, but I needed the right situation. My opportunity came in 2010 when I had the privilege of becoming the founding rincipal of Red Hawk Elementary. I was able to hire a staff that shared my educational vision and collaborative approach. The result was the creation of a rigorous academic environment coupled with a comprehensive wellness program. The integration of the School Movement Program, which provides students with 35-40 minutes of aerobic activity a day in addition to recess and PE not only enhanced academic achievement but contributed to fostering a positive school culture. >>>

.

The success of the Red Hawk program encouraged schools throughout our district and beyond to incorporate physical activity into the school day. As the recipient of the President’s Council for Nutrition and Physical Fitness Community Leadership Award, we were able to raise over $600,000 in grants from the Colorado Health Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, and ChildObesity180 to spread the word through conferences, staff development and an online class reaching over 500 teachers across the state of Colorado. sparked my interest in the connection between exercise and learning. My own experience, backed by an impressive body of research, and the success of Red Hawk Elementary has made me a strong believer in rigorous physical activity as a component of any successful academic curriculum. I’m excited, that in my role as rincipal of Soaring Heights PK-8, I can build on the knowledge and experience gained at Red Hawk. Soaring Heights PK-8 & the Future: Soaring Heights is a state-of-the-art facility on a 22-acre campus with close proximity to Erie High School. The building is equipped with warm, naturally lit classrooms, two maker spaces, a large media center, science labs, four music rooms, two gyms, a track and baseball field. We have developed partnerships with the euroscience program at Anschutz School of Medicine, National Innovation for Mental Health Center and CU STEM Outreach Programs. I believe it is imperative to prepare students to succeed in a rapidly changing world and highly competitive international economy by teaching children how to think logically and critically, communicate effectively, give and receive feedback, and show empathy towards others. In order to do this, it will be important to bring together the tenets of a traditional education in terms of standards and a well-defined scope and sequence with opportunities for students to experience handson projects requiring collaborative work. A critical component of this work is to help students develop an emotional intelligence and self-awareness that will enhance their ability to work in a team. In preparation for opening Soaring Heights, I spent a lot of time talking with the Erie community about what they most wanted in their local public school; in fact, we had 8 community meetings to get feedback. A rigorous academic environment, STEM, critical thinking skills, and collaboration all came up just like they had for Red Hawk. But this time, people kept coming back to concepts like empathy, kindness, service, and mental health. This rang true with my experiences as an educator over the past 20 years. As the concepts of the hard sciences— biology, chemistry, physiology—swirled in my head along with computer science concepts like coding, robotics, virtual reality and artificial intelligence—I knew we needed to have concepts like empathy, service, kindness, physical activity, and overall wellness front and center as part of the fabric of our school as well. I realized there was a field that encompassed all of these concepts: euroscience. Hence, Soaring Heights PK-8 is a STEM focus school with an emphasis on euroscience. Neuroscience is the perfect vehicle for bringing together a variety of disciplines to propel students deeply into the scientific process while growing a rich understanding of how brain functions affect learning and behavior. Having a clear understanding of how our brains work supports individual learning processes and helps students function better in collaborative situations. Being aware of how our brains process information differently (the concept of eurodiversity) increases self-awareness while taking on another’s perspective. This concept ultimately helps students not only function better, but improve outcomes for our entire community.

The format of our program brings together the rigorous St. Vrain curriculum, with meaningful opportunities for students to be propelled in to the scientific process through hands-on experiments and Design Thinking challenges. This ensures students receive a well-thoughtout and linear curriculum, where students sequentially build upon skills and content while being able to explore topics related to their interests. Our program provides both the high-ability student with opportunities to challenge themselves and also engages less-motivated students. With our Innovation Coordinator, Anna Mills, and support from the Anschutz Neuroscience Program, we have developed three modules that span the school year with the themes of Oceans, Land, and Space. Each module begins with neuroscience experiments and then moves into a series of design thinking challenges. Each module culminates with students sharing their work. We often bring in experts in the field, both in person and virtually, to help students formulate their ideas. For example, middle school students study how breathing and other sensory input affect the body’s stress response. Students use virtual reality to simulate what it’s like to be on a roller coaster. With EKG machines, they can monitor changes in heart rates to assess the impact of stress on our nervous system. Students will have the opportunity to visit the Anschutz Medical Campus to see first-hand what scientists do in their laboratories. Teacher training is critical to the success of the program. Teachers receive direct training from neuroscientists to help them be more comfortable with the concepts they will be teaching as well as broaden their awareness of the different ways all of us process information. Monthly planning sessions with the neuroscience outreach team support the development of school-based activities and ensure content is accurate. It is an absolute honor to serve the Erie Community. Each day I have to pinch myself, as I love working with our students, parents, teachers, and community partners. I cannot wait to see what our students will accomplish in the future.

5 TIPS ON HOW TO ACHIEVE A MOUNTAIN CABIN RETREAT VIBE For many of us who are lucky enough to live in Colorado, the Rocky Mountains are a big reason for WHY we live here. The colors, the views, the smells, and the feelings they invoke when we are in their midst soothes the soul and invigorates the mind. Below, I want to share 5 decorating tips that can bring wonderful elements of the Rocky Mountains and all that they bring alive in us, just a little bit closer to home.

1 THEME Picking a theme is an important step to ensure that you have a consistent look and feel to your living space. There are essentially two themes you can choose from: Rustic Modern. For the purposes of this article we are going for Rustic inspiration. Rustic themes tend to include many browns, reds, blacks, and tans which invokes a “cabin in the woods” type of experience. Modern is a mixture of grays, whites, blacks, and lighter wood tones which invokes a mountain feeling but far more civilized. There is no wrong answer here, just personal preference. A quick coat of paint on an accent wall based on your theme, will do just the trick.

2 FURNITURE

If budget allows, buying a few pieces of furniture can quickly transform your living space. A word of warning: furniture options can quickly become overwhelming if you aren’t sure what to do. A general rule of thumb, it’s best to stick with a consistent style with your furniture throughout the home.

3 ACCENTS

Accents pull everything in the house together. Accents can come in many varieties: wall art, throw blankets, throw pillows, greenery, picture frames, placemats, dinnerware, napkin rings, glassware, cabinetry hardware, wall mirrors, candles, and area rugs. These can be easily found at most home décor stores anywhere for as cheap as $5 dollars and can run all the way up into the thousands of dollars. Most of those categories listed above will fall in the “und $30 at most places. A few pre-lit fake pine trees pictured here can do wonders to make your home feel more like a mountain getaway.

4 AMBIENCE Lighting is like icing on the cake when it comes to decorating. If there is one single thing that I recommend to instantly make a difference in your home regardless of style you are going for, its lighting. The quickest fix? White Christmas lights above the kitchen cabinets. Yes, good ol incandescent white, Christmas lights. I prefer the NON-LED kind as they give off a very welcoming warm glow, compared to some of the LED variations currently on the market which can give off a bluish-green tint that accompanies them. I you prefer LED, I recommend getting LEDs that indicate a warm glow which will be listed by the manufacturer. My other recommendations for ambience lighting may include flameless candles, floor lamps, table lamps, and under cabinet mounted lights. If you’re feeling especially motivated, there are many rustic themed chandeliers that provide beautiful ambience most often under $400. Don’t forget the dimmer switch which can adjust the lighting for just the right mood.

5 SMELL The power of smell- Sure this category could be included in the accent category, but because it is so important, I gave it its own spotlight. Smell can go a long way to enhance a living space and nothing does that better than a few strategically placed candles, hand soaps, or wall-flowers (plug-ins) with the appropriate scent. Try smells like peppermint, cinnamon, cocoa, vanilla, pine, or cranberry. Of course, you could always bake a dozen chocolate chip cookies to add to the olfactory ambiance. At that point, activating the 5th sense-Taste- is one delicious bite away. There will never be a substitute for experiencing the truly majestic Rocky Mountains of Colorado in person. But if you want to bring the mountains just a little bit closer to home, a plan, a little inspiration, and a few decorations can go a long way. Rachel Hawks is a midwestern girl that moved to this beautiful state 10 years ago. She loves the sun and outdoors and found Colorado so captivating she had to call it home. She has always had a passion for transforming a living space into a magical oasis and it brings her great joy to be able to do that for her clients.

5 REASONS You Need Accident Insurance Living In Colorado by Julia Wiswell

Colorado is an incredible place to live. Breathtaking mountainous scenery, more than 300 days of sunshine, and endless opportunities for outdoor activity are just a few of the reasons people are moving to Colorado in droves. Colorado is also known for being one of the fittest states in America and residents dedicate a lot of time to exploring ways they can take advantage of all it has to offer, from new hiking trails to new ski runs and everything in between. The inevitability of this lifestyle is a higher rate of accidents. Here are five reasons why it’s important to have accident insurance if you live in Colorado. First, Colorado residents face quickly changing weather patterns. “If you don’t like the weather, just wait ten minutes.” Many states throughout the U.S. try to claim this joke as their own but in my opinion, none can compare to Colorado. Honestly, it’s part of why I love Colorado; it keeps me on my toes and I’m never bored with the current season. I’ve played basketball with my kids in the driveway in January and I’ve tasted snow in July. However, it’s not without its challenges. Sidewalks that were dry and stable only moments before can suddenly become a sheet of ice, and now that quick jog around the neighborhood is ending with a trip to the ER.

HEALTH

“Colorado residents are outdoor overachievers.” Julia Wiwell is an Erie resident, mom of two girls and co-owner of Wiswell Insurance. Wiselle Insurance is an independent insurance agency dedicated to providing the best possible insurance coverage, including Medicare Supplement plans, as well as retirement planning.

Second, Colorado residents are outdoor overachievers. Hiking, biking, whitewater rafting, zip lining, rock climbing, and hang gliding are just a few of the activities occurring in a typical Colorado day. And just because summer is over does not mean our activity slows down. What do we do when the lakes freeze? Go ice skating! What do we do when the mountains are covered with snow? Go sledding, skiing, or boarding! The reality of this lifestyle means the odds of having an accident increase exponentially. Whether you catch an edge boarding and break an arm or fall while climbing, accident insurance will keep you from adding financial pain to your physical pain. Third, Colorado residents have an entrepreneurial spirit aybe it’s all that sunshine! The constantly increasing number of self-employed residents means there is an increasing number of people trying to navigate their own insurance needs. Without the aid of employer benefits, it is even more critical for those who are self-employed to have access to the best insurance protection available. Fourth, Colorado is ranked in the top five states for having the most number of breweries. Many residents enjoy this aspect of Colorado culture. With their laid back and typically family/dog friendly atmospheres, breweries provide the perfect conclusion to a day of hiking or skiing.

However, newcomers especially may not be aware of the significant impact elevation has on alcohol tolerance. Combine a love of IPA’s and a high elevation, you’ve got a recipe for happiness as well as accidents. Fifth, Colorado residents love “The Colors.” Many residents take an annual road trip into the mountains to see the stunning aspens as they change colors in the fall. It’s no surprise that Coloradan’s want to bring this beauty into their backyards. The challenge is aspen trees that are available for landscaping do not have a root system that can support a long life. This creates a lot of dead aspen trees in just a few short years. I speak from experience when I say that an attempt to cut down an aspen tree can result in a range of accidents, anywhere from loss of limbs (pun intended) to broken wrists. This painful experience was the catalyst to my purchase of accident insurance. These are just a few reasons to have accident insurance if you live in Colorado. Make sure you’re prepared so you can fully enjoy all this beautiful place has to offer.

The Power of DP’s Sweet Life An Interview with Danay Powers, owner of the new and upcoming DP’s Sweet Life

ELIFE: Tell us about yourself and your family. Where are you originally from? DANAY: I am a Colorado native through and through. I am originally from Arvada, but have lived in Erie with my husband for eleven years now. We have three amazing boys (10, 8, and 6) and a little red headed princess (2 years old). I met my husband, Andy, 16 years ago in college. We became great friends and then started dating 14 years ago. We have been married for 10 years. He’s my best friend. The best husband anyone could ask for. ELIFE: What prompted you to delve into the baking business? DANAY: I have always been an artistic person but never truly had an outlet until I found my love for baking about ten years ago. I would bring my homemade cake or cupcakes to my kid’s birthday parties and the guests really seemed to love how they looked and tasted. Over time, I began getting requests from friends and family to do sweet treats for their events. In the year of 2017, I had order a week for the entire year! Thi was before we officially announced that we were going to start a bakery. In mid 2017, my husband and I began doing market research on the town that we live in (Erie, CO) to see if a bakery is something that was needed. During this process, we kept on seeing cake requests on the Erie, Colorado Facebook page and my name would be recommended many times. I knew I had something special and wanted to share it with everyone. We opened the business officially in January of 2018. From there, as people had positive experiences, they told their friends and business began picking up. Fast forward to eleven months later, we are now fulfilling roughly 100 custom orders a month, have two full time employees, and are about to officially open the doors on our bakery in old town Erie. ELIFE: What’s your favorite thing to bake? DANAY: My absolute favorite part of the business is to create and decorate realistic looking cakes. So far, I have done guitars, snakes, footballs, and many more. Regardless what a customer is looking for, I am up to the challenge. >>>

ELIFE: What’s the most difficult thing you have baked before? DANAY: Just before we organized the business in December of 2017, an order came in from a friend that had a corporate client that needed 800 Christmas sugar cookies. This was a time when we had zero employees and no idea how much work went into providing a top notch product on an order of that size. It took roughly seven whole days to produce and we had tables of cookies strewn about all over the house. Without our friends and family that order would have never been completed as successfully as it came out. ELIFE: Tell us something that most people don’t know about you. DANAY: One thing that no one seems to know is that I am completely self taught and have no formal baking education. All of our recipes and creations were put together from hard work and trial and error. Also, on top of having four young kids and a flourishing new bakery, my husband is on the road roughly 100 nights a year for business which puts sleep at a real premium right now. ELIFE: Tell us about your new location in Erie. DANAY: Our soon to open location is a real labor of love for sure. We have personally put in the time to rehab the 60 year old building during nights and weekends for the past seven months. We are now in the final stage and working on getting approval to open from the town. One thing that is going to make our bakery different is that we really are putting an emphasis on providing the customer the full baking experience in the form of decorating classes and birthday parties. We have been Erie residents for some time now and cannot wait to provide a sweet new place in old town so we can further be a part of this amazing community.

WHY In the spring of 2008, a group of health-care and business professionals who shared profound personal experiences with the life-enhancing benefits of essential oils came together with a common vision of bringing a new standard of essential oils to the world. They asked themselves some defining questions: “What if we could provide the world with a new and powerful wellness alternative?” “What if we could provide this new level of wellness through a mainstream approach to essential oils?” “What if we could source, test, and manufacture a higher quality of essential oil —more pure and more potent than any other oil available on the market today?” “What if we, in the most professional manner, could partner with major hospitals, doctors, scientists, and opinion leaders to provide the most compelling authentication of essential oils on the planet?” They organized a company and named it dōTERRA, a Latin derivative meaning “Gift of the Earth.” The first dōTERRA offering of 25 single oils and 10 oil blends was introduced for sale on April 25, 2008, to the acclaim of essential oil experts and product enthusiasts who immediately recognized the superior quality of dōTERRA therapeutic-grade essential oils. dōTERRA has continued to add wellness products and to expand their essential oils offering as the company has enjoyed tremendous growth since its beginning.

SELF DISCOVERY MANY PEOPLE BELIEVE IN HAVING GRATITUDE. MANY PEOPLE WILL EXPRESS GRATITUDE ON A DAILY BASIS. MANY PEOPLE RECOMMEND HAVING AND EXPRESSING GRATITUDE, BUT DO THEY REALLY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING? PROBABLY NOT.

EXPRESSING GRATITUDE AND INVESTING ENERGY IN SOMETHING YOU BELIEVE IN, CAN GROW WITH AND BENEFIT FROM IS THE BEST USE OF GRATITUDE. CONVERSELY, PUTTING ENERGY INTO SOMETHING THAT IS ABUSIVE, OPPRESSIVE OR STIFLING IS COUNTERPRODUCTIVE. YOU CREATE UNINTENTIONAL BLOCKS, AFFECTING YOUR WORK, ATTITUDE AND, POSSIBLY, HEALTH.

I recently had a client come to me, very upset. I had just recommended, a couple of days earlier, that she express gratitude to Spirit (God, Collective Consciousness, or Higher Power) for the things in her life for which she felt grateful and thereby develop a more positive attitude and reaction to life. Apparently, she expressed great gratitude for her current job, so it completely shocked her when it seemed to have backfired. Her next day at work was hell. She asked me in a very perplexed tone, “what happened?” Clearly, she felt as if Spirit was punishing her or had gotten angry with her for something I had recommended. Now she was looking for answers. I EXPLAINED TO HER THAT NO, SPIRIT DID NOT GET “EVEN” WITH HER. Let’s look closer at this person’s job. She worked 60 or more hours per week without additional pay. She had been asked to perform illegal activities (which she had refused), and she was not permitted any autonomy in performing her job: she was being micro-managed (now considered workplace bullying). Now I don’t know about you, but I would have a difficult time expressing gratitude for this work environment — it was abusive. Although we can learn from abuse and be grateful for the lessons learned, I don’t think it would be anyone’s first choice to experience abuse. IT SEEMED TO ME THAT SHE MEANT TO EXPRESS GRATITUDE FOR THE SECURITY AND THE OPPORTUNITY THE MONEY FROM THIS JOB PROVIDED.

Once this individual began expressing gratitude for the right things, the security and opportunity created by the money, instead of for the abuse, she moved past this abusive job, and the doors opened up for something better, more uplifting and motivating. She is once again thriving and growing in gratitude.

GRATITUDE BY SONYA ANDERSON

SONYA ANDERSON is a professional spiritual and intuitive counselor and one of the region’s leading empaths, intuitives, and energy experts. She holds credentials in many of the metaphysical and spiritual disciplines including channeling, psychic detective, mediumship, and medical health intuitive, and is an ordained non-denominational minister, practicing demonologist and Reiki Master. Sonya activated at the young age of 2 and survived a near-death-experience at 16. These experiences give her insight into the challenges of being a psychic child and forged a strong connection with the “unseen.” She brings this unique perspective to solving everyday problems with “otherworldly” insights.

BE CAUTIOUS AND SELECTIVE ABOUT THE THINGS IN WHICH YOU PLACE YOUR GRATITUDE. PRACTICING MINDFULNESS AND CAREFULLY EXAMINING THE OBJECT OF YOUR GRATITUDE CAN SAVE HEADACHES DOWN THE ROAD. THE ENERGY OF GRATITUDE CREATES INSTANTLY AND AMPLIFIES OUTCOMES. IN THE ABOVE EXAMPLE, BEING GRATEFUL FOR THE JOB MEANT BEING GRATEFUL FOR THE ABUSE — SO THE ABUSE INCREASED. WHEN THE INDIVIDUAL BECAME GRATEFUL FOR THE ABUNDANCE A JOB BROUGHT TO HER, SHE WAS ABLE TO MOVE ON AND THE ABUNDANCE INCREASED. Practicing the attitude of gratitude is a wonderful way to experience life. Focusing the energy of gratitude helps to remind yourself what is important to you, while helping to identify what should be let go. So please, go forward in gratitude daily, practiced in mindfulness, love and peace. Namaste.
