COL LEEN WHITLOW

F OR MAYOR

I am Colleen Whitlow and I am again running for the Mayor of Mead. Over the past four years, I have served as a Town of Mead Trustee and I have accomplished many uplifting things for the community. As Mayor, I will make the biggest impact by working with the other six Trustees to move the Town forward in a positive and productive manner. I have over the last four years been involved in many endeavors that shed a positive light on Mead. Mead is a small community. We as a board need to balance the small town feel with the need for revenue and manage growth to achieve what the majority of the Town residents want. As your Mayor, I will work to ensure that all voices are heard, that we account for the taxpayer funds and that we are accountable for the tough decisions that have to be made. I will work with other surrounding communities to keep the lines of communication open and moving forward. Your voice is important! You need to have the avenues available to let us know how you want your community shaped. I encourage each of you to come to the Town meetings and become involved. I am running for Mayor because I believe my skills and abilities to lead, rationalize and effectively communicate make me the best qualified candidate for the Mayor of Mead. The key to success for Mead will be my ability to work collectively within a group and thinking outside of the box. These will be key assets and that will move the Town forward in a reasonable and organized fashion. I also believe that we need to put the people and our community first. Please visit my Facebook page at ColleenWhitlowForMayor and walk with me on this journey. I look forward to working with you to keep Mead a safe community that brings us together every day. Thank you for your support. Colleen

WHAT’S IMPORTANT! ENCOURAGE FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY As Mayor I will uphold the same promise and values as I did while a trustee for The Town of Mead, to ensure every dollar is spent wisely and is accounted for. I stand by my belief that the towns priorities are resident safety, school issues of all regards, roads, and infrastructure. Your hardearned tax dollars should be focused on these identified priorities.

SUPPORT BUSINESS COMMUNITY During my four-years as President of the Mead Chamber of Commerce I have made it my mission to promote and advocate for our local businesses. As Mayor I will continue to push for businesses on the I-25 corridor. Mead is a unique location with two I-25 exits; this sets us apart and should provide us with opportunities to attract more retail to the area. We need to leverage our location, work with businesses, and promote this great town.

ADVOCATE GOVERNMENT TRANSPARENCY Ensuring transparency in all actions of the town board and staff is important. I advocated for having all town board meetings recorded thus providing town residents access as well as an established permanent record. My promise to everyone is that we will only convene an executive session when no other alternative is available. I commit that the board will adhere to Colorado Revised Statutes 24-6-402 (4) when and if the need for executive session occurs.

PRESERVING QUALITY OF LIFE I have been a resident of this town for almost 20 years and love it just as much now as when we first moved here. The quality of life it provides was attractive to us as I am certain it is to many other residents who have relocated here. As Mayor I will work in parallel with the other Trustees to ensure the community remains a small town and that Mead is a safe and respected place to live.

PROMOTE RESPONSIBLE GROWTH Growth is inevitable and cannot be stopped. We can research measures to control it and its impact on our community. As Mayor I will continue to push for responsible growth that will preserve our small-town feel while providing businesses the opportunity to succeed.

GROW JOBS AND OUR ECONOMY During our comprehensive plan process, we found that 97% of Mead residents left the area to work and provide for their families. On the flip side, 98% of the jobs in the Mead area are filled by people outside of our community. My vision is to work with the business community to create more job opportunities in Mead.

PROTECT PRIVATE PROPERTY RIGHTS I am a firm believer in the Constitution and the rights of US citizens. The Founding Fathers believed that private property ownership preexisted government. The state and federal governments were the contractual agents of the people, not sovereign lords over them. The Federal Government does not have the right or authority to dictate how you use your privately-owned property. As Mayor I will again uphold the same promise and values I did as trustee and I will work hand in hand with property owners to ensure fair and just treatment.

SUSTAIN PUBLIC SAFETY The safety of the residents of Mead is and always has been my number one priority. As our town grows the need for law enforcement increases. The burden put on our first responders as a result of this growth is becoming overwhelming. My awareness and dedication to this cause is why I became a member of the Mountain View Fire Rescue District Board. As Mayor I will continue work to ensure the safety of our community, its residents and the businesses. My goal is to have Mead spotlighted as the safest community to live in Colorado.

FOSTER EDUCATION I am a proud supporter of our Mead schools and both of my children attended school here. It was one of the main reasons we moved to Mead. I am also of the belief that education is not and should not be a one-size fits all approach for our children. There are numerous learning styles and valuable paths to a solid educational foundation. Parents and caregivers know their children best and they should be empowered with choices to educate and embrace educational innovation. When education is put back into the hands of educators and parents, our children win.

FAMILY AND COMMUNITY … INTRODUCING

MARIANN JOHNSTON

Trisha Ventker: Can you tell us about yourself and your family? Are you originally from Colorado? I am Fort Lupton born and raised. I’ve lived her my whole life and graduated from FLHS in 1976. Mariann Johnston: My family is the most important thing in the world to me. I’m married to Gary Johnston who also has lived in Fort Lupton his whole life. He is a commercial beekeeper taking care of over 2000 colonies of bees. I help him with the financial side of the business (all the bookkeeping).

We are blessed with 2 wonderful children Shawn and Sandee who both went to school in Fort Lupton and both graduated from FLHS as Valedictorian from their classes. They both attended the University of Denver following graduation and graduated with honors from DU as well. Shawn is the Senior Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer of HCPI in Irvine California. He has a wonderful wife, Alyssa, who is a full time mother of their 3 wonderful sons Ketcher (11), Kolton(10) and Kamdin(5). The boys are >>>

actively involved in their school, church and many other activities. Sandee is married to Mark Saar and is also a full time mama to her 3 little angels Naomee (7), Carolynn (5) and Dustin (2 ½) who are also involved in their school, church and other activities in Fort Lupton. Mark was a pilot in the Air Force for 15 years and currently flies for Delta Airlines and is in the National Guard in Wyoming. My mother, Beverly Rudy, still lives in Fort Lupton and enjoys many senior activities at the FL Recreation Center. She enjoys working in her yard and specifically with the roses she loves so much. My brother, sister in law, aunt and numerous cousins also reside in Fort Lupton. The biggest blessings in my life are my 6 perfect grandchildren and I enjoy every second I get to spend with them. Being a Grandma (MeeMa) is the best job in the world. God has truly blessed me! Trisha Ventker: Can you tell me about the community of Fort Lupton? Mariann Johnston: Fort Lupton is an amazing Community of people from all walks of life. We have the young, the old and everything in between. This Community truly cares about and for each other in good times and bad. If someone is down there is always someone to lift them up and when there is something to celebrate, we celebrate together. Trisha Ventker: What’s your favorite thing about Fort Lupton? Mariann Johnston: The feeling of family and love that you feel while in the presence of the people who live here. Being able to walk down the street and see friends and family. I love that people rally to help each other out in times of need. Trisha Ventker: Tell us more about your role at the bank. Mariann Johnston: I am currently the Vice President of Operations for the Bank of Colorado Fort Lupton location. I am happy to come to work every day because I love what I do. I supervise and manage the Teller Department, New Accounts Department and Loan Department. I oversee the compliance for all departments of the branch. I handle Human Resources issues in the branch as well as being the Security Officer. I deal with customer issues and serve as a

coach to all of our staff. I tease that I need to be a Fire Fighter for Halloween because I spend the majority of my days putting out fires. Bank of Colorado is a wonderful family owned Community Bank that still believes in honesty, integrity and prides themselves on great Customer Service. We are encouraged to be involved in the communities that our banks call home. I have worked for the Bank for over 18 years and have loved every second. Trisha Ventker: Tell us ways people can give back to the Fort Lupton Community? Mariann Johnston: This list is long – pick what you want. Do at least one thing each day to help someone else out. Get involved in something that blesses you. It will make giving a joy for you and the receiver. Give to a charity. Volunteer somewhere – our schools, read to kids, visit our elderly attend community Functions. Be willing to speak up for what you believe in but also be willing to hear the opposing side and agree to disagree. Buy the person behind you in line a cup of coffee or lunch. Take time to visit with someone who needs a friendly ear or should to cry on. Say Thank you. Hold the door for someone. Compliment someone daily. Be proud of others accomplishments. I guess I’m really saying little thing matter, be kind. You never know what someone else is going through. AUTUMN DECOR by Courtney Vinaske

When thinking of fall, people usually thing of bright oranges, reds and warm brown tones. A neutral color palette can add a warm romantic feel with the comfy touch of subtle highlights of autumn. Fall is the longest Holiday season, starting in September and ending in November. A fresh looking centerpiece can last throughout the fall months. Here are some tips on having eye-catching table decor. 1. Decide on a color scheme. In decorating we like to use warm neutral tones with a splash of greenery and autumn colors. 2. Layering is essential when decorating any room in your home. Starting with a centerpiece to give your table that inviting feel. We start with a long metal tray. 3. Then, we would add our white pumpkins or even adding small pails and putting the pumpkins inside to give your centerpiece some height. 4. Adding greenery and adding white berries will give it that festive look. 5.For a final touch you can add, battery powered twinkle lights to give you that warm magical holiday feel! And voila you have a beautiful centerpiece to enjoy for the fall season! If your looking for any special festive decor feel free to stop in at Berthoud Vintage. Where we also offer Holiday decorating, consulting and design services.

SUICIDE PREVENTION RECOGNIZING RED FLAGS & HOW TO HANDLE THEM By Kathryn Hughey, LPCC

The morning of June 8th was very different! After waking, I grabbed my cup of coffee and pulled up a news site on my computer. I was shocked and saddened to discover that my favorite celebrity chef, Anthony Bourdain had taken his life just days after Kate Spade had taken hers. Unfortunately, we here in Northern Colorado are often faced with news of local individuals, specifically teens, who have died by suicide. According to the Colorado Health Institute (www.coloradohealthinstitute.org), death by suicide is the leading cause of death in kids and young adults 10-25 years old, while men aged 25-44 are twice as likely to take their lives more than women. And the number of deaths by suicide continues to climb. Suicide is not restricted by age, socioeconomic status, culture, race, or beliefs. It is a often a result of a serious mental illness, and/or a complete loss of hope. Sometimes impulsivity is a factor. I have talked to

countless people who have felt that suicide was or is the answer and the common theme is not selfishness, but absolute belief that everyone would be better off without them. I firmly believe that education is the first step in prevention. In the past year I have made educating as many people as possible about suicide a priority. I have been privileged to teach parents, teens and youth leaders all over Northern Colorado about how to confidently handle this situation. In light of that, here are some indications that someone is struggling with thoughts of suicide:

Signs Someone Is Struggling with Suicide: Stressful Life Events - divorce, death, major sickness, sexual/physical assault, harassment/bullying, etc. Isolation - They may stop hanging out with the family or friends, or they may be sitting right in the middle of everyone but not engaging with anyone. Isolation doesn’t always mean they go off >>>

by themselves. Isolation can occur right in the middle of a crowd. Talk About Death or Dying - This may be overt and direct, “I want to die”. Or it can be passive, “What would it be like if I wasn’t here?” Personality Changes - They may be very depressed, irritable, outwardly aggressive, crying a lot, or they may have been very depressed and are suddenly upbeat. Sudden positivity is not always a sign that someone has gotten better. This may be indicative of the relief they feel after deciding to go through with a suicidal plan. Past Attempts, especially in the last 1-3 months. Feelings of Hopelessness, Unworthiness, Failure and a Lack of Interest in the Future.

thoughts, he or she can call the crisis lines; they can call 1-800-273-8255, or they can text TALK to 38255.

When and if you are faced with someone you suspect might be suicidal, be direct. Ask them directly if they are having thoughts of suicide. If they say yes, ask them if they have a plan. If they do or you are worried about them you can do the following: Call 911 or Take Them to the Nearest Emergency Room Call a Crisis Line: Larimer County Crisis line - 970.494.4200 Weld County Crisis Line- 970.347.2120

Remember that you can ask all the right questions, you can get them help, you can do all the right things, but it’s up to them to be honest and take advantage of the help they have been offered. If your friend or loved one continues down that path, give yourself grace! You cannot control others. You are not at fault for someone else’s choice. If you are struggling with guilt over someone’s choice to take their life, please considerseeking help with this. It’s a heavy burden to carry alone. There is no shame in seeking out help to find healing.

S2T or Safe 2 Tell App: This app can be used by anyone including students to report safety concerns. Anything reported can be anonymous and be routed to the proper authorities or agencies to investigate. There is a 2 minute response time when this app is used! If you know someone who is having suicidal

If you are a parent of someone who is depressed and thinking about suicide, get him or her into a mental health counselor who can provide both them and you support. If you have adult children or friends who are struggling with this, encourage them to get help. If it’s overwhelming for you to talk with them about this, ask for help. Help is available. I implore you not to dismiss their feelings, thoughts, or words. Even if you think it might be a manipulation tactic, or a ploy for attention, take it seriously. Report it. It’s better to have someone angry with you than the alternative.

MENTA L H E A LT H Ballot Measure Interview with Laurie Stolen, MS, CPSP, CSPS

By Erin Owens, MA, LPCC, CAMS-II

What sparked the creation of this ballot measure? We used national data and national trends and discovered that since we don’t have the resources that we need, people are ending up in the emergency room or the jail to receive treatment. We have one of the highest suicide rates in the nation and consequently we have recognized that there is a profound link between mental illness and addiction, with suicide as an outcome. Therefore, we have much motivation to improve how we are conducting efforts to reduce the suicide rate that we have. One of the only ways to

resolve that is to improve behavioral health resources and alert people earlier. Why do you think the ballot did not pass in 2016? Ultimately, what we found was that not enough people understood the issue, so a stronger effort has been made to raise public awareness of the need, define what behavior health really is and explain where the biggest gaps are in our community. After engaging over 60 people in focus groups and educating them on the issue, over 40% of them changed their vote >>>

from a no to a yes. It was a strong indicator to us that it wasn’t that they didn’t want it to pass but there were just too many people that didn’t understand it enough to vote. What is the projected savings in preventative care if this was to be voted in? We have done much research to understand the return on investment and we know that every dollar that is spent can save upwards of 12 dollars in criminal justice, health care, work productivity, etc. What will the tax money specifically be used for? We talk about this as a three-pronged approach. The first is distributed services around Larimer County. An example of this would be creating funding options with the school districts to enhance mental health, suicide prevention and addiction issues for kids. We are also looking at doing some telepsychiatry in Estes Park so that transportation down the canyon becomes a non-issue for people, for they will not have to wait 3-6 months to get an appointment with a psychiatrist or appropriate counselor. The second prong would be focused on evaluating people’s strengths and weaknesses and seeing what their needs truly are when it comes to treatment. This prong is really a care coordination component that is so important in making sure people can maintain their stability in recovery. The third prong focuses on creating a behavioral health facility. This would include a multiple different levels of detox and a residential treatment unit below hospital level care. We would also want to expand crisis stabilization, through expanding the current crisis stabilization center in the community through SummitStone.

What is one thing you think is important for voters to understand about this ballot measure? I think the most important thing to recognize is that this is not the county growing government or trying to be soft on crime, but it’s about being the conveners of a conversation to use the dollars on treatment as wisely as possible. That way the criminal justice system is free to deal with criminals in an appropriate way and not deal with people who really need treatment instead. The primary focus is avoiding cost as a barrier for receiving treatment. THE BENEFITS OF

Group Fitness By Rachel Pastor

E

veryone’s bike pedals are moving at the same speed, same time; it’s a force-filled rhythm. Sounds of people cheering on one another come from all corners of the room. Sweat and a wave of release and excitement run through the place. This is how my first cycling class felt. I left class on a high, an endorphin high like I had never known before. It was the power of group fitness. Group fitness has many benefits and is many people’s preference for a variety of reasons. Here are my top four…

MOTIVATION | Participating in a group exercise class challenges one to work out beyond your perceived

limitations. It’s inspiring and motivating to be surrounded by dedicated, like-minded individuals. You are likely to work out harder than you would on your own, as everyone is exercising toward the same goal. It doesn’t get much more empowering than a class with an encouraging instructor and supportive people all working hard together. Group fitness is a great way to help motivate yourself and others to dig deeper and push harder during workouts. >>>

HEALTH | Group exercise classes are great for cardiovascular improvement and weight loss. Several classes in-

clude dance aerobics, indoor cycling, kickboxing or step aerobics. Or, if you also want to improve your muscular endurance and strength there are weight training, calisthenics or “boot camp” classes. If flexibility is your goal, a stretching or yoga class is a nice option. For those who are just starting out with the gym and feel uncomfortable around weights or machines, group fitness classes are a great way to learn proper form.

SOCIAL | Group fitness classes are a great way to meet people in your community, joining people who have

similar lifestyle goals and needs. Make friends and have adult conversations (a bonus for moms and dads with little ones at home). Before you know it will you be scheduling “sweat dates” with all your new fitness buddies!

ACCOUNTABILITY | A group exercise setting helps keep you accountable to attend the class. If you are

required to prepay for a group class your accountability also increases because you have a limited number of classes that you paid for and are more likely to attend. When all your fitness friends are waiting for you to show up you are sure to make more of an effort!

Core Work:

The New Break-Through Fitness and Lifestyle By Shelby Stratton

N

ot only is “CORE WORK” important in the gym or studio, it is also essential to look at it from a lifestyle standpoint. Since getting certified to teach yoga in 2009, it has become so apparent why the core is such an integral part of your body that, too often gets pushed to the side. For this reason it has become so imperative for me to work on my core and help others with theirs when working with clients or teaching yoga. I also saw this first hand after childbirth, progressing from basic to complex

movements again while regaining strength. Now I feel stronger than ever, and it is all because of the connection with my CORE and healthy lifestyle habits. I like to think of the core as the lifeline to one’s existence. Daily, I spend 5-10 minutes focusing on core strength. Most people just think of the ‘core’ as the ‘6 pack’ muscles. It is so much more than that! It starts with the pelvic floor muscles - all of the muscles on the front side of your stomach, to below your diaphragm.

Then the back muscles from above your pant line to mid-back or right below your shoulder blades. Another great way to picture it is like a corset a woman would wear back in the day. Our CORE is actually made up of 29 muscles!! Right?!? So, we have to make sure and target ALL 29 of those “bad boys” in our workouts to optimize our functionality in everyday life activities. Once the core is built up and strong, there is less risk for injuries to other parts of the body because you have a firm foundation working from the inside out. We always hear “Abs are made in the kitchen,” right? This has been floating around for the past few years on social media and through health companies. I agree! I try to eat clean as much as possible, but I’ll enjoy pizza, ice-cream or a donut every once in a while. I have found adding Purium’s Core4, into my daily routine has helped transform my body!

My Routine:

Morning - Super Amino 23, it’s 100% pure vegan Mid-morning - Power Shake, which is an organic superfood green drink with many amazing benefits;

packed with superfoods, proteins, antioxidants, slow burning carbs and a fat that helps burn fat! Pair the Power Shake with Biome Medic. It’s an amazing gut protector; it protects your gut from GMOs and glyphosate. Biome Medic has been considered the world’s first “Anti-GMO” product! protein, which goes to your muscles in 23 minutes. Bedtime - Apothe-cherry with water. Tart cherry helps combat uric acid and has natural occurring melatonin(which helps get us to deep restful sleep, which we can all use right?!?). If you are interested in trying any of these products visit ishoppurium.com use “livefierce” for $50 off your first order! *Purium specific information was found at ishoppurium.com

SO, to get your core in shape, you only have to start with 3-5 minutes a day. Think of engaging your core while living life; driving, brushing your teeth, cooking dinner or working. Make healthy lifestyle choices with food choices! Here are my 4 favorite exercises, easy and simple: • Plank- start with 20sec, increase to 1-2mins • Regular crunches- 3sets of 10 reps • Oblique crunches(each side)- 3sets of 10 reps • Hip lifts- 3sets of 10 reps

FINANCIAL FOCUS HELP PROTECT VULNERABLE FAMILY MEMBERS FROM SCAM ARTISTS If you have older family members whose cognitive functions or decision-making abilities have declined, or who are lonely or recently widowed, you might need to help protect them against financial scams. What steps should you take? First of all, try to gain a good sense of their overall financial activity. Look for red flags, such as a reluctance to discuss money matters, consistently unpaid bills, unexplained withdrawals, mysterious wire transfers or a sudden need to purchase large quantities of gift cards. And watch out for new “best friends” or caretakers who show an unusual interest in your loved one’s finances. Whether or not you’ve observed any of these activities, you can help your elderly family members by making these moves: • Have checks (such as Social Security payments) directly deposited. You can help your family members avoid a lot of potential trouble by having their checks deposited directly into their bank accounts. • Seek permission to become a joint account owner. By becoming a joint account owner on your elderly family members’ checking and savings accounts, you can review statements for suspicious activity. Of course, your loved ones may be initially reluctant to add your name, but if you have a good relationship with them, you should be able to explain the benefits. • Shred bank statements, credit card offers and notices of lottery or sweepstakes winnings. One of the most useful gifts you can give to your elderly family members may be a shredder. Encourage them to use it to shred old bank statements, credit card offers and other financial documents. • Get on a “do not call” list. Telephone scammers are persistent and devious. By registering your family members’ house and cell phones at www.donotcall.gov, you may be able to reduce their exposure to unwanted calls. • Obtain power of attorney. By creating a power of attorney, your loved ones can designate you or another trusted relative or friend to assist with their finances now – for day-to-day assistance and protection from scammers – and later, should they become incapacitated. Again, you will need to employ some sensitivity when discussing this issue. • Check references of caretakers. As mentioned above, some caretakers are, unfortunately, dishonest. Before you hire one, check out this person’s references. And even when you do, be careful – scam artists have been known to use accomplices as references, so you will need to be thorough in your research and questions. • Get to know your family members’ financial advisors. If possible, become acquainted with your older family members’ financial advisors. Any reputable advisor will welcome a connection with their clients’ loved ones. And if you are involved in any estate plans, this multi-generational relationship will prove beneficial for everyone. • Ask to meet any new "friends" they have met online. When someone is lonely, they become vulnerable to online friendships. Sometimes, these new friends make promises of meeting, but never show – and then they suddenly need money for one reason or another. It can be challenging to guard against all threats posed by the scammers of the world. But by staying alert and taking the appropriate preventive actions, you may be able to help safeguard your loved ones’ financial security. WHY

In the spring of 2008, a group of health-care and business professionals who shared profound personal experiences with the life-enhancing benefits of essential oils came together with a common vision of bringing a new standard of essential oils to the world. They asked themselves some defining questions: “What if we could provide the world with a new and powerful wellness alternative?” “What if we could provide this new level of wellness through a mainstream approach to essential oils?” “What if we could source, test, and manufacture a higher quality of essential oil—more pure and more potent than any other oil available on the market today?” “What if we, in the most professional manner, could partner with major hospitals, doctors, scientists, and opinion leaders to provide the most compelling authentication of essential oils on the planet?” They organized a company and named it dōTERRA, a Latin derivative meaning “Gift of the Earth.” The first dōTERRA offering of 25 single oils and 10 oil blends was introduced for sale on April 25, 2008, to the acclaim of essential oil experts and product enthusiasts who immediately recognized the superior quality of dōTERRA therapeutic-grade essential oils. dōTERRA has continued to add wellness products and to expand their essential oils offering as the company has enjoyed tremendous growth since its beginning.

WHY THE

CLOUD? By Emily Moore

T

he “cloud” is creating a seismic shift in the world of Information Technology with its widespread reach positively impacting all users, from the individual to large-scale companies and everything in between. Just a few short years ago, the cloud was still a mystery to most as those who did utilize it considered it merely a place to store data. While the cloud has always been capable of far more than data storage, the continual improvements have now made it the “electronic data access backbone” of many of the most successful companies in the world. If properly created and configured, the cloud can assist in the management of nearly every area or department of a company and its teams.

It is hard to recall the days without the internet, or the days before one could quickly “Google” an address, learn about any topic with the simple click of a button or voice command, buy a birthday present, and manage a business right from their phone. For those that remember when the internet was brand new, they might recall that it was not welcomed with open arms; it was shrouded with so much hype, mystery and even distrust. Fast forward to 2018, as we now spend 40% or more of our lives on some device accessing the internet. Even those who fear the cloud have likely used it in their personal lives countless times >>>

as many smartphone apps run via the cloud. Applications such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram Dropbox and even cell phone providers utilize the cloud for managing and storing our data. So if we take into consideration the current momentum of trending technologies, cloud usage could double around the world by 2023 and quite possibly triple by 2025. Those that were skeptical of the internet are now using it on a daily basis and this same progression will undoubtedly be seen in cloud computing for the coming years. Consider the companies that took full advantage of this “strange” technology when the internet was new. Companies that put their products or services on the internet when the competition was low and the advantages were high, are likely now dominating the markets. The cloud is another prime example; the execution of early adoption will bring a promise of early success. So, you might still be asking what exactly is the “cloud”? The cloud refers to data and applications that are stored on powerful virtual computers located in multiple data centers across the country and handle your requests through the internet, instead of locally on a computer. This capability comes with myriad benefits such as the ability to create a document on your computer and later make changes to the same document on your phone or tablet. These actions are accomplished through cloud computing providers such as Google and Microsoft. While there are many cloud platforms and companies to choose from, Google stands out in this arena. Its cloud offerings, capabilities and functionality are nothing short of awe inspiring at its price points. Some individuals are taking advantage of cloud capabilities by creating a free Gmail address and utilizing the accompanying applications such as Google Calendar, Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Forms, Google Drawings, Google My Maps and Google Sites. However, Google takes this technology a step further by offering companies their businessminded suite referred to as “G-suite”. G-suite is a business platform for operating in the cloud and allows employees unmatched collaboration within each of these applications, immensely increasing efficiency and saving BIG on time and money. Companies that embrace the cloud and integrate G-suite will see many improvements throughout

their business. One of the most significant changes is that companies are able to operate more efficiently. There is very little downtime as users merely need an internet connection to access G-suite. This platform allows users to work from any location and any device while having easy and secure access to their company’s digital assets. Users can easily share documents and work on them at the same time in real time. The cloud offers hundreds of free apps which allows users to quickly and easily connect to all of their day-today tasks under one platform, eliminating the need for multiple sign-ins to multiple websites accessing applications such as accounting software, CRM platform, project management software, time sheets, and more. The sheer simplicity of this environment allows companies to focus on doing what they do best and leaving the software to handle the rest. G-suite companies are also able to connect and sync all of the company’s branding, allowing for a more professional appearance with an email domain that matches the company name. Communication is streamlined through the use of group email accounts, ensuring everyone stays on the same page. In addition, users can have multiple email aliases which are all directed to one inbox. G-suite provides human resource tools and optionally added security measures. While an employee is working within a company’s G-suite, the company has full ownership of all emails and files created by the employee. If the employee decides to leave, the company is able to remove the employee’s access while transferring it to a new hire seamlessly. In order to help manage the high volume of remote workers, and even on-site workers, the cloud has options for monitoring how much time employees are working each day and create a triggered report for employees not meeting the typical requirements in daily work efforts. Other benefits include unlimited file storage, 24/7 support, 99.978% uptime, as well as bank level security features. One of the most shocking benefits of cloud computing is the affordability. What started as a Fortune 500 movement, has now become easily available to small businesses. On average, the cost is only $5-10 per month, per user which providessignificant savings of over 70% less cost than a traditional setup of expensive on-premise servers that require regular and >>>

also expensive IT maintenance. This can offer all of the advantages of an on-site server but without all the chaos and expense that can come from a server crash and unexpected downtimes. Even if users do not have an on-premise server, the benefits of using G-suite for important assets versus storage on a local computer, include protection from not only future costs involved with trying to recover data, but the possibility that the data will be gone forever. Regardless of what devices pass through a user’s hands, the data is safe in the cloud and with Google’s award winning “Vault”, your data is 100% safe on multiple locations of redundantly backed up data that runs every second of every day. If predictions are accurate, major companies all around the world will be paying for some form of cloud computing in the near future. Therefore, this article should be a sounding call to embrace some level of cloud technology; your business will be better off for it. Lingows is a Google Partner and we stand 100% behind the cloud. In closing, I think it’s important to mention that we as a company utilize nearly all the G-suite provided tools on a daily basis. As a matter of fact, as I write this article I’m using a document (Google Doc) created within the Google Drive and my team is adding comments and suggestions which I can accept or delete. We also used “Google Hangouts” (a messaging application) to collaborate, along with an in document chat feature. When the article is completed, it will be saved on our Team Drive where we have unlimited storage available. The devices used include an Android phone, Apple phone, PC and Macbook Pro. The beauty of working in the cloud is that it allows your teams to work together in the most efficient way possible and the result is nothing short of magical.

THE ART OF

LOOPING

By David Connelly & The Dissoniq Music Loop

M

y music career began at 30 years old. I played 19 songs that I learned for a fundraiser which a friend put together
downtown at The Retro Room. It was my first time singing and performing, and the first of about 2000 gigs to follow over the next 8 years.” What kickstarted David Connelly’s career was performing songs that others didn’t cover; like Lady Gaga, Busta Rhymes, Macklemore and Katy Perry. He also happened to be 6’ 2” tall, weigh 205 pounds and was an athlete his entire life - not your typical idea of a musician. “From the day I started, I knew music was my passion, and I wanted to perform songs that other musicians did not cover. However, if there is a song that is a staple of the cover music scene, I was determined to perform it differently and have my own twist on a classic, so that the cover was unique.” Dave discovered looping and everything changed quickly - his music career took off on a path that allowed him to cover a variety of unique songs and most importantly, performing with vigor, captivating an audience that could not only enjoy the music, but also understand and learn the art of looping.

VIDEO SPACE “Looping” is nothing new, but it has only been performed rarely by the few who have taken the time to perfect the art. However, over the last 10 years, and more rapidly the last 5 years, a talented looping community worldwide has developed. The artists range from the YouTube sensations to the well-known performing live for millions (Ed Sheeran). More people have become familiar with the term looping and learned what the art is all about. Unfortunately, there are still many who have no idea what looping is and have never actually had the opportunity to see looping performed live. As an artist who performs 300 gigs a year for the last 5 years, Dave is well aware of the gap, purely by awe when a

newcomer experiences looping for the very first time. Dave explains to us the big difference between “live Loopers”, who are the ones that have learned how to record a few things tastefully to sound good vs. the Loopers who have mastered the art to set up a studio sound recording - this separates the hobbyist from the professionals. Professionals are able to perform 4 straight hours of music from scratch, over and over again, night after night – literally a single musician that can sound like a full band – it’s mesmerizing and a fantastic gift for us all to enjoy! “My set up has recently started to become one huge instrument to me; incorporating multiple guitar effects, vocal effects, beatboxing and a looper - I gig myself a full “one man band” sound. I keep it engaging and interesting for both myself and the listeners. The audience comments frequently on loving to watch the building and composing of songs – playing the game of trying to guess what song is being built before the songs gets commence with that first lyric, or catchy lick that finally gives it away.” Dave has perfected the art of composing songs in a way to keep people interested and guessing, he is a true entertainer. Dave understands the great Loopers are quick with hanging effects, laying down layers in correct sequences, and correct phrases to give songs the full dynamic sound that you hear on the radio. The actual time it takes to create a song must be considered; it must build in a way that makes it fun and interesting as it’s created. Otherwise, looping can be a >>>

very repetitive and boring thing to behold. “The most amazing fact about the Looping community, besides watching true talent capture the dynamics to make looping fun to listen to, is no two Loopers are alike. Performing back to back, you never see the same set up; you never see the same thing twice even if their instruments pieces are the same or they perform the same song.” This is what sparked The Dissoniq Music Loop and the looping festival. The inaugural festival was here in Denver at the Westminster Light Rail Station, September 16th of 2017. This year’s festival at the Westminster Light Rail Station on August 18th of 2018. The best Loopers will blow you away with their ability and sneaky path to building songs. The looping community and following are growing; you are invited to see some of the best Loopers perform LIVE! During the process of bringing artists together to raise awareness of the art, Dave has built amazing partnerships with the community…allowing children to take the stage, giving striving artists the opportunity to perform in an amphitheater full of fans! The children, though will not be looping, have been a driving force for Dave Connelly, the organizer and host, (and one of the performers!) Dave is passionate about getting kids out to perform, giving them the opportunity to nourish their dreams at an early age. This year he pulled together the School of Rock in Broomfield to perform live music AND local dance studio, Live Love Dance for a choreographed performance. The Dissoniq Music Loop will be donating to and supporting a nonprofit called Joyful Journeys who helps struggling families with a number

of programs that these families may otherwise not be able to afford, one of which is a music program. Joyful Journeys house band Which Way Is Forward will be kicking off the festival this year performing some popular top 40’s tunes. We round out the festival with local Colorado Breweries, a Colorado Distillery and food truck to enhance everybody’s festival needs. “The biggest blessing of starting a music career later in life is experiencing the gift of music bringing people together…more than I had ever had the privilege of getting to know in my entire life. It’s not my stage; but the universal joy and commonality that we all share with music. Music is a powerful common thread that binds us all together as humans, like blood pumping through our veins. Music has encouraged and enhanced many relationships with vastly different people just because of our common love for music - a certain beat, song, guitar lick, or genre can connect many different walks of life.” David launched the music-based clothing line Dissoniq Conformity (The Coming Together of Humans Through Music in a Dissonant World). This clothing line was originally designed to raise money for schools and music programs, but more recently has encompassed the “coming together of humans” in a bigger way. The clothing line will be partnering with various nonprofits like Homeless, PTSD, Battered Women,, and Music Programs to run campaigns that utilize clothing as a movement and message that music can help all different walks of life to make the world a more harmonious place. This program is currently working with a nonprofit for the homeless, to provide a life changing experience. One by one, each effort can lift a person up, build a sense of home, and create a selfworth to become self-sufficient and proud. “We strive for each project to change an individual or families life for the better.

wait WHAT ABOUT THE DOGS?!?

Y

By: Kristi Ross

ou know the type of panic that sets in. Airline tickets are bought; hotel reservations booked; bags packed and everything is set for your upcoming holiday vacation. Then a little voice pops into your head. Who is watching Fluffy?

Many veterinary offices offer overnight boarding options to their clients. Choosing a facility with a vet on site may be best if you have a dog with extensive medical needs, a weakened immune system or in need any type of specialized care in your absence.

After frantically calling all of your friends, family, neighbors and the random guy you met at the brewery last weekend, you realize everyone else has a life and are taking off to see family or hit the beach too. Now what?

Just like the resorts we visit as humans, dog boarding options will run from the basics to luxury and vary in price. Some will offer all-inclusive options that include playcare, food, administering vet prescribed medications and others may charge additional fees for these services. Make sure to do your homework, read online reviews, ask other dog owners where they board their pets and be clear on what to expect while boarding. Boarding your dog should be a pleasant experience and not one that gives you anxiety while you are on vacation.

This is a common scenario that pet parents deal with every time they decide to get away. Thankfully, as dog ownership and the need for safe, reliable pet care services have increased, so too have your options. Paying attention to the specific needs of your “fur kids” will help you to determine the best choice for Fluffy’s care while you are away. Doggie Daycare and Overnight Boarding Facilities: These facilities are designed specifically for the safety, comfort and enjoyment of your best friends while you are away. They are heavily regulated by the state of Colorado, must be properly licensed, adhere to strict dog to dog handler ratios and have extensive cleaning protocols in place. A reputable dog boarding business will: • Offer a complimentary evaluation day and facility tours • Be open to answering any questions and understanding your concerns. • Have staff trained in dog behavior skills. • Dog handlers certified in K9 First Aid and CPR. • Require all dogs are properly vaccinated. • Be in good standing and have current licensing with PACFA.

Online Petsitting Matching Services: Gone are the days of having to rely on friends, family or a help wanted ad when trying to find an in home sitter. Although these services have come under some scrutiny due to the lack of licensing, oversight and regulatory requirements, they can be a good option when you have a dog that will not do well in a co-mingled, social type environment or traditional boarding facility. If you decide on in home pet sitting or a full service pet boarding facility, it is advisable to make reservations and have your arrangements for Fluffy’s care as soon as you confirm the dates of your next trip. The popular boarding facilities and pet sitters book weeks and sometimes months in advance Happy Tails Dog Ranch | 970-532-4040 happytailsdogranch@gmail.com happytailsdogranch.com

NORTHERN COLORADO -BIGFOOT COUNTRY? PART 3: "THE 1980-90'S AND THE NATURAL DISASTER THEORY"

F

By John J.K. Small

or centuries have The Western Territory States of America including Colorado complained of a giant "hairy man" or unspecified/unclassified animal stalking if not cohabiting with those who live in its most remote areas. Since the Native American Tribes of the Montana and Dakota Territories down The Rocky Mountain Range to the Mexican and Central American Tribes, the commonly known "Bigfoot Creature" has left its mark, whether mythically, physically or spiritually. Although the tribal references or names for the creature vary, experts feel, all are possibly describing a "missing link" in the evolution of "our kind" - mankind that is! Maybe "missing" is the wrong word; "in absentia" "incognito" may be better terms! Modern-day scientists are finally paying attention to, of all things, certain natural disasters of the past forty or so years as a possible cause or reason for the multiple presences of these creatures among us. If only these so-called experts existed and felt the same hundreds, if not more years ago, for these creatures

may have preceded us along the genealogical lines of our physical growth and maturation as a species. Since these "unnatural" beings, in one form or another have made their presence in over 100 countries through the ages, scientists are no longer trying to debunk these life forms, but conversely, now are pursuing their "cause" for reemergence at an alarming pace. It can be considered progress by all, for the possibility is now morphing into probability by the scientific world. Progress is good! Scientific acceptance and research are even better. Universal classification, understanding and compassion are best! After the May, 1980 catastrophic eruption of Washington state's Mount St. Helen's, the most deadly and economically devastating natural volcanic disaster in U.S. history, law enforcement, government agents and scientists had the ungodly task of cleanup, including years-long searches and finds of any human and animal caucuses. Among the tons and tons of debris did multiple remnants of Sasquatch appear, some in full form - others ripped >>>

apart by the explosion. Although the task, again, took years to complete, cryptozoologists have allegedly reported and artifactually stored these parts leading the scientific world to accept this creature as real and not mythical or "folklorean" at best. Multiple volunteers have reported that piles of these bodies and body parts were removed from the massive earth slides, heavily guarded by state police and U.S. military, insuring their secret retrieval en masse. Personal testimonies include large nets hoisted by cranes revealing the bodies and their severed appendages clearly and hastily being removed and stored out of sight. These stories were willingly reported to local newspaper journalists and radio personnel at the time by the civilians assisting the search teams. Most of the stories never made it to the media, until now! In the late 1990's, August of 1997 to be precise, in the vicinity known as Battle Mountain, a terrific wildfire ravaged much of northern Nevada. Firefighters noticed a huge hairy creature badly burned, running on two then four feet escaping the monstrous conflagration. When cornered, the creature finally acquiesced and allowed the medics to medically assist it, even permitting governmental officials to take it away in a large unmarked utility van. One anonymous governmental official stated that the occurrence was immediately reported to the Bigfoot Field Research Organization (or BFRO), U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife, Department of The Interior and Bureau of Land Management, some of whom were present on the scene, making copious field notes, taking specimens, etc. The "specimen" was listed as over seven feet in length, measured on a large ambulance stretcher, which didn't adequately hold the creature who was tranquillized and hooked to an intravenous, wherein Demerol and morphine were administered. The "specimen" was reported making moaning sounds

and some form of guttural communicative attempt while being worked on by the vet and doctor on the scene. Described as "strong-jawed" with a head twice the size of a human's with human-like face and eyes, long unmatted hair all about the body except soles of feet and palms of "hands" containing opposable thumbs, which were 1.5 to twice as large as a normal human's. The sexual apparatus was identical to an uncircumcised male. Over 180,000 acres were destroyed during those days, with over 600 personnel fighting the enormous wildfire. Along with firefighters and paramedics, a local veterinarian, medical doctor and several bystanders (numbering over 20) in fear of losing their homes and properties were accosted by the governmental figures, debriefed, threatened and implored never to discuss what they saw to anyone. Only now have many come forward. The question remains -Why now? From the classic October 1967 Gimlin/Patterson film in California to the July 2011 Utah film of a family of Sasquatch enjoying young hikers attempting to "sled" down a mountain side, the evidence is alive and kicking from all around our great country. If only the geneticists and anthropologists could just align and listen to the theorists among us who firmly believe that these are a breed to be respected and not doubted. Who knows, these majestic and secretive beings could virtually if not biologically be our ancient ancestors. Let's believe in at least the possibility, if not probability that these creatures certainly do exist and have as much right to their primitive privacy as any other animal or remote human species does. Maybe, they'll make their presence known on a mass level someday. Wouldn't it be more prudent if we, their "long lost children" welcome them with open arms and utter understanding with or without the government and scientific worlds' consent? >>>
