10 tips for buying your first home 1. Get pre-approved: This will help determine how much you qualify to borrow and what you’re comfortable paying. 2. Check your credit: Even if you have blemishes on your credit, you may still be able to qualify for a loan. Your loan officer can educate you on the many factors involved. 3. Determine your down payment: Requirements vary depending on the type of loan, loan amount, and available down payment assistance programs. 4. Save for closing costs: They may include, but are not limited to, title policy insurance, mortgage insurance, fire/flood/homeowners insurance, recording fees and loan origination fees. 5. Explore ways to lower your rate: You may be able to pay points (fee charged by a lender; one point is equal to 1% of the loan amount) at the beginning of the loan to lower the interest rate charged.
6. Decide between fixed or adjustable: Depending on your short- and long-term goals, you may wish to take advantage of a fixed rate loan or one that adjusts periodically over time. 7. Consider conventional and government loans: While conventional loans may feature fixed or adjustable interest rates, FHA, VA and USDA loans typically involve a fixed rate. 8. Take advantage of first-time homebuyer programs: Ask your mortgage expert about options that are customized for those who have not previously owned a home. 9. Factor in mortgage insurance: Home loans with a down payment of less than 20% will most likely require mortgage insurance. 10. Attend first-time homebuyer counseling: Learn about selecting a home, realtor services, homeownership responsibilities, saving for a down payment and other essential elements.

Editor's Note Spring always seems to bring an unspoken impulse to organize and declutter. It is a good feeling when one can lean more towards the side of being a minimalist. I have recently had the opportunity to hire a personal concierge, Janie McCourt from Quality Personal Care Services, who has truly been a life saver. Being a workaholic sometimes means that organizing the home goes to the wayside. Enter Janie, who has helped me with a variety of tasks, from organizing closets, to running errands for work, to everything under the sun. We are lucky to have a very special family on this issue's front cover, the Tallent family. Amy Tallent is not only a close friend, but one of the most influential women in Northern Colorado. She possesses both strength and kindness in working as a marketing expert for businesses and governmental agencies. She is also a candidate running for the position of councilmember in Johnstown. Please take the time to read about her in the article, We've Got Tallent. Spring also is the time where you see many people take their exercise routine outdoors. As the days get longer and the weather gets nicer, people tend to want to escape the indoors and sweaty gyms, to take advantage of the great outdoors here in Colorado. In this issue, Danielle Radden, a local talented confidence coach, offers tips on how to adopt the cycling bug. Mother's Day is coming up and like many moms, I struggle with multi-tasking. Lisa Beach brings us a comical take on the A.D.D. of Motherhood. In our parenting section, you can read the Summer Camp article by our contributor, Amy Webb, who was recently published in The Huffington Post. Her article discusses unique Summer Camps for kids in Colorado. Our Spring/Summer issue always includes our Bridal Guide. Check out Taylor and Garrett's Rustic River Wedding spread photographed by the talented Larissa Welch of We The Light Photography. Our Fashion Spotlight is on a new and upcoming designer. Ortero specializes in clothing for men up to 5'9". Their unique 3D sizing algorithm ensures that the shirt you buy is properly proportioned to your individual body type. Right now — before the summer travel season is in full swing — is the best time to look at local trips that you can take. Our family had the opportunity to visit the Great Wolf Lodge in Colorado Springs a few weekends ago. Our 11 year old son invited a close friend to join us. Check out the travel section to learn more about the Great Wolf Lodge experience and what makes it so perfect for families. I hope you enjoy the better weather, and thank you for your readership. we are so honored to offer you NoCo magazine, one of the most read digital magazines in Colorado.

A N I N T E R V I E W W I T H A M Y TA L L E N T The Tallent Company | Efficient, Strategic Planning & Delivery Solutions for Businesses, Goverment Entities and Organizations. tallentco.com
Tell us about yourself, your family and what are the interesting things on your radar now? I have four pillars in my life; faith, family, community and business. I am a believer and it guides everything I do in my life. I am blessed to be married to my high school sweetheart, former first responder and amazingly gifted artist, Jesse Tallent. He has been my best friend for the past 15 years and we have 3 incredible children together. Jesse and I own and operate The Tallent Company which focuses on efficient, strategic planning and delivery of solutions for businesses, government entities, and organizations. I currently serve as a Town of Johnstown Councilmember and am the first female in twenty years to do so. This position allows me to be a voice for families and businesses in our amazing Town and I feel blessed to be able to sit at the table with so many experienced leaders. >>>
Tell us how when and why you started in the marketing field? I love getting asked this question! Since I was young I was a heavy critic on advertising. When watching television or listening to radio with friends and family I would often wonder why they advertised in the way they did. In college during a commercial break of Grey’s Anatomy, I commented on a commercial and my roommate (probably more annoyed with me than anything) said “why don’t you consider marketing and work on things like this.” She knew I wasn’t happy with my major at the time and this opened a door in my mind I hadn’t even considered. However, I quickly realized that I was not interested in sales or trying to trick people into buying a product. Me true passion is communication. I switched my major to Human Communication and set out to learn as much as possible about the psychology of why we think the way we do, why we make decisions, what triggers us to act, and (my personal favorite) the study of interpersonal communication. After college I worked for the Erie Chamber of Commerce which further developed my skills but also showed me the struggles of the average small business especially in terms of communication. I then worked for Mountain View Fire Rescue which granted me a new perspective and helped me hone my ability to tell stories of service from a government perspective. It also taught me the necessity of transparent and honest communication. I wanted to show people that service wasn’t just about the firefighters that put out the fires, but about the firefighters who shoveled elderly neighbor’s driveways after a snowstorm or volunteered to help at crosswalk duty when the individual who usually did that was out sick. It was finding the people and their passions and then telling their stories of service to the community they served. Those stories deserve to be told and the fire district became one of my first clients when I started The Tallent Company. Now Tallent Co. helps many governments, businesses and organizations with their administration and communication needs. Tell us the funniest story regarding a business? My husband and I always get comments and jokes about our last name and how “talented” we are. Well occasionally people take this line of reasoning to the extreme and mistake The Tallent Company as an actual talent agency. We had one individual leave a message at our offices asking to set up a time for headshots. We had no idea what was going on until our team called him back and we realized he wanted us to represent him as an actor. What is the most challenging aspect about what you do? Sometimes it is responding with love and acceptance when you want to just say “did you not just read what I wrote?!” There is a funny meme in the social media world that shows a picture of a social media post that states something like “Kelly’s bake sale from noon to three pm today! Pick up is at 3 rd & 6 th street and we will have apple and cherry pies.” The comment section is filled with questions about what time the event is, where it is, where is pickup and who is selling pies. The meme is funny because it is true but it is also scary because we see this type of behavior every day. The biggest challenges we face as a company represent much larger issues within our society and culture. People don’t read to learn anymore. People don’t value one another’s time anymore. We as a society numb ourselves with such a constant stream of stimulation that it takes the average person 9-13 times seeing something before taking action. But the truth is there is opportunity in this behavior. If we as communicators take the time to teach and educate about why something is the way it is or how we can make a change, most logical people will understand and become great voices about that issue. We can use social media for connection and relationships but leaders have to go first with this task. My clients and my social media accounts are for positivity and truth and their followers appreciate that and engage with them more because of it. >>>
What is the most rewarding aspect about being in the marketing business? Teaching and brainstorming. My favorite part of my job is actually the one I don’t get paid to do. It’s when we volunteer to sit down with someone who feels a bit lost in the marketing world and we help them get back to the “why.” Especially as entrepreneurs, there is a reason we do what we do and typically, the “why” is has real passion behind it and has a true purpose. We love sitting down with someone and asking them “why are you waking up every day to work on this?” The truth is we all have a choice in what we do. It’s the beauty of the United States of America and when we are discussing with people why they do what they do we are able to uncover the servant’s heart. Not the money and not the glory but the love of what they do which communicates much better to current and potential customers. Any business, government entity or organization can do this. Just spend some time thinking about why you do what you do, and your marketing world will open up. Tell us something people don’t know about you. I actually don’t like being the one people are looking at. I don’t care to have my name associated with a title because I’d rather work behind the scenes and help things flow and prosper. God blessed me with leadership capabilities, and I believe any good work I do is His. I don’t need or want things to be seen as a result of Amy Tallent but instead because God used Amy to do these things. His work and plans are much better than mine and my goal is to do things for His glory and not mine. Tell us your vision as a Councilmember for Johnstown? I visualize a more connected community. I want citizens to know more about businesses in our town. I want businesses to know they are welcome and feel supported in our Town. I want businesses to join together to learn from one another and help each other. I want connection between our neighborhoods. I want places for everyone to meet together as a community and for people to know who their neighbors are. I want events for the community, and not small events but major parties that bring people together laughing and making good memories together. I want to work better with our surrounding communities and special districts. I want there to be a conversation about the future of our community with the school district, business community, emergency services, and everyone that serves the residents of our great Town. I want us to be proactive and not reactive to our economic development. I want every single citizen of our Town to have pride that they live in our Town because our Town is beautiful, debt free, and is a place they will love to call home. I’ve loved serving as Town Council and if the voters decide I’m still the best fit for them in April, I will absolutely continue serving with a grateful and honored heart.

A LEGACY IN REALTY
GENERATIONAL SUCCESS T HE P I E CES O F A WI NN I NG T EAM | BY J.SMALL
R
ecently, I had the assignment of writing an article about a local realtor and close friend of ELIFE’s editor-inchief. Brie Fowler’s illustrious career had quite a start, I discovered. It started in 1955, well before her father’s and her own birth. Jack Fowler, her paternal grandfather, passed his realty exam and consequently received his realtor’s license. Successful and loving every day selling homes in the Boulder area, within 20 years Jack would become the chairman of the legislative committee of Colorado Association of Realtors only to later (in 2016) become Man of the Year from Park University. Brie’s “Generational Success” had its roots well developing by that point. >>>
The next stage came when her father, Tom graduated Boulder High and joined a realty firm while attending CU earning a Finance in Real Estate degree and subsequently joined his father in Boulder’s Gold Run Condominium Realty. Tom, Brie’s dad would sell over 3,000 condos in his day! He’s brokering for Caldwell Banker as lead broker in “The Fowler Group” to this day. Unfortunately, Tom would incur a serious horseback riding injury which sidelined him for quite some time with serious internal bleeding or Subdural Hematoma. In an effort to help, Tom’s daughter Brie, who had just experienced a bad divorce and multiple questions about her nursing career offered her services and was hired as Tom’s assistant in the brokerage. The rest is history. Brie is an exceptional realtor and an even more exceptional person in our community. She loves helping people in and out of the real estate business. Her zeal for living is omnipresent in the Erie community. Her worldtraveling being a member of “Up with People” in the late 90’s has given her a superior sense of compassion and understanding for all cultures and races of people. Brie is not only an excellent saleswoman, she is an exemplary friend of ELIFE Magazine and several of its members as well as a member of our great Erie community. Please come and meet Brie, her dad and grandad at the “shop” and get to meet and know “generational success” in a “Colorado kind of way”! JACK FOWLER Tell us how, when, and why you started in real estate? I got my Real Estate license in 1955: I needed a job so I saw an ad in the paper wanting to hire a Real Estate Sales Person. I told Barbara I wanted to check it out. She was concerned because she thought it was a salaried position. I told her I wouldn’t take the job if that was the case. I took the job……I’m waiting for my first salary check. Tell us the funniest story regarding someone buying or selling a home? My first sale: I showed a house to a nice couple. They loved it and said they wanted it. But they were due to catch a plane, so what to do? I found a paper bag, wrote up an agreement, and made the deal. What is the most challenging aspect about the real estate business? Today in Boulder it’s finding suitable housing that one can afford. Also, contracts today are 17 pages long! What is the most rewarding aspect about being in the real estate business? You are your own boss and basically run your own business. Tell us something people don’t know about you. In 1974 I was chairman of the legislative committee representing the Colorado Association of Realtors. Also, if I have to brag, I was Realtor of the year in 1974, and received the Man of the Year Award in 2016 from Park University. What are your thoughts about bringing on your grand daughter and her husband on the team? Its wonderful to see their excitement and enthusiasm. It’s like seeing a re-run of my own footsteps. TOM FOWLER Tell us how, when, and why you started in real estate? I got my license the summer I graduated from Boulder High School. I then started college at CSU and in my 3rd year of college I started selling real estate, part time, while going to school. I was looked at as “the new long haired kid” until my fourth month in the business when I was awarded “salesman of the month” by closing more deals than anyone else in the office. That got their attention!! I went on to become salesman of the month multiple times and then graduated with a degree in Finance and Real Estate. After a short stint as a ski bum I joined my father and helped him build and sell Gold Run Condominiums in Boulder. That led to an extensive career >>>
in marketing condominium communities for multiple developers in the Boulder Denver area. I’ve now sold over 3,000 condominiums and although I now sell all types of residential real estate for Coldwell Banker, my specialty is still selling condos! Tell us the funniest story regarding someone buying or selling a home? In my early years of selling real estate in Fort Collins I was fortunate enough to list a home that overlooked Horsetooth Reservoir. After it had been for sale for a few weeks the owner mentioned that he was worried about the house, and the boat in the garage, as the home was vacant. My apartment lease was just about up so I generously offered to move in to the house and keep an eye on things for him while the property was for sale. He agreed and the next thing I knew I was living in a beautiful home overlooking the lake! Then one night while I was out with some friends I ran in to a guy named Tony who had done some title work for me. He had mentioned that he was looking for a house and that he really liked the Horsetooth lake area. I told him about my listing and he said, “Let’s get some beer and go take a look at it. We took a few other friends along, we had a great party, and the next day he said, “Let’s write it up!”. I proceeded to sell my own listing, which is every Realtor’s dream, got to live in a great house for free for a few months, and got paid more money than I could believe to then move out. That’s when I said, “This is the business for me!” What is the most challenging aspect about the real estate business? Probably the biggest challenges of real estate is that we wear a lot of different hats in helping our clients buy and sell real estate. It also seems like no two deals are the same and we are always dealing with new challenges. Years of experience definitely helps but it always amazes me how new and different issues can pop up around every corner. What is the most rewarding aspect about being in the real estate business? Regardless of how unusual or difficult a problem comes up, our job is to figure it out and fix it. I actually really like that side of the business as I enjoy solving problems and helping deals reach their ultimate goal - and that is to get to the closing table! Tell us something people don’t know about you. One thing most people don’t know about me is that I have been in the sheep business off and on during my life. As a kid I raised sheep (Suffolk sheep to be exact) and with my brothers and sister I was in 4H and showed sheep at the Boulder County fair. All of us had the grand champion lamb at one time or another and it was a fantastic experience growing up. Then I moved on, went to college, got married, lived the Country Club life for a while, raised my kids, and then ended up living in the house next door to the house I grew up at. So, as a hobby, I built a couple new barns, put up some good fencing, and bought another flock of sheep! I sold lamb for a few years and then ended up merging my flock with my good friends, the Buckners, as they then went on to expand their booming business known as “Boulder Lamb”. I still help with lambing season every year but am glad to not have to get up early every morning to feed! What are your thoughts about bringing on your daughter and her husband on the team? It actually took getting bucked off of a horse and landing on my head to get my daughter in to the real estate business! She seemed happy with her career as a nurse but with enough morphine running through my veins, I had the courage to tell her that if I had a “do over” I would have convinced her to come in to the real estate business with me. She said, “Dad, it’s not too late!” I said, “What about your nursing career?” and she said, “Dad, if you’re serious, I think I’m ready for a change and I’d love to work with you.” Within four months she passed her real estate exam and we became partners in “The Fowler Group” at Coldwell Banker. It’s been a thrill ever since. Her energy and excitement is contagious. I now find myself telling people, “Brie started out as my assistant, and now, most of the time, I feel like I’m hers!” We work real well together and are always helping each other. It’s wonderful! >>>
And now, bringing on her husband, Brandon is adding another layer of energy and experience to our team. Having been a lender for the last dozen years or so he brings a wealth of knowledge about one of the most important areas of our business - financing your new home. It will be like having our own in house lender who knows all of the financing products out there and where to go to get our customers the best rate and, often more importantly, hooked up with the right lender who can actually get the job done! It’s a thrill to have Brandon on board with us. BRIE FOWLER Tell us how when and why you started in real estate? I started Real Estate in 2016. I was a nurse for 16 years prior to my career change. My father asked me to join him in the business and be his partner, teach me the ropes, and eventually take over the business. The reason being...he had a bad fall off a horse and ended up in the ICU with a Subdural Hematoma (Brain Bleed). He’s on a life-long blood thinner for his mechanical heart valve, so the neurologist and the cardiologist had to work together to thicken his blood to stop the bleeding, while not thickening it too much because a blot clot could cause a heart attack or stroke. My dad didn’t think he was going to make it, but when he did, he decided to come up with what he called his “Second Chance Plan”. He called a meeting with me while he was in the hospital (heavily medicated I’m sure). At that time, he asked me what I thought about going to work with him. He thought it would be a great opportunity for me...and I took him up on it! Tell us the funniest story regarding someone buying or selling a home? I can’t think of a funny story. What is the most challenging aspect about the real estate business? The most challenging aspect about the Real Estate Business is that you are always working. As a nurse I clocked in at 6AM and clocked out at 3PM. After my shift was over, I didn’t have to think about work until my next shift. If you make a full time career out of Real Estate, you work long hours, almost every day. I definitely make time for my family and have more flexibility to stay home with my kids when they are sick, volunteer at the school, attend more baseball & football games. On the other hand, I am on the phone a lot, even at their sporting events, I work nights and weekends, and even work on vacation. Over all the benefits outweigh the occasional frustrating circumstances. What is the most rewarding aspect about being in the real estate business? I love watching my client’s excitement at the closing table! Whether they are buying or selling, it typically comes with challenges during the process, and I love helping them overcome the issues that can come up. With my experience as a nurse and a life coach, I have the ability to coach my clients through the process with empathy and understanding. Then at the closing table, we get to celebrate!!! Tell us something people don’t know about you. I travelled in Up With People, a traveling musical group that promotes world peace through community service and music. I travelled in 1997-1998, and it was by far one of the best years of my life. I made 100’s of friends all around the world, travelled to 8 different countries, and became a better person, with compassion for others and understand of other cultures in the process. I was a Nurse, an Esthetician, and a Divorce Coach What are your thoughts about bringing on your husband on the team? I am so excited to bring my husband on the team. He is such a positive man with a ton of energy, in addition to his financial background. Prior to joining our team, Brandon worked in the lending industry for over 12 years. His vast knowledge in home loans will allow us to expand our services so we can continue to offer the best value for our clients with his extensive financial education.

THE A.D.D. OF MOTHERHOOD (AKA THE MULITASKING MAMA) BY LISA BEACH
“I’ll be back out in a minute,” I said to my husband Kevin as we were sitting on the back porch reading the Sunday paper. “I need to go throw a load of laundry into the washer.” On my way upstairs to gather a load of white clothes, I notice my son’s soccer cleats on the steps. I gingerly pick up the smelly footwear, toss them onto his bedroom floor and run for the Lysol to eliminate that “teen boy smell” from his room. After spraying a hefty dose of disinfectant, I see a sports bottle sitting on my son’s dresser. The bottle’s dripping condensation just taunts me with the threat of an impending water stain, so I whisk it away to the dishwasher where it belongs. As I load the bottle into the dishwasher, I notice the haphazard way that things are just shoved into the top rack. Small ice cream bowls sit right-side-up, just waiting to collect water. Knives perch precariously, ready to slice off a fingertip at any moment. Cups lay sideways, as if they were just tossed in arbitrarily. For God’s sake, does no one in this family have spatial awareness? You can fit eight more glasses in here! While rearranging the top rack, I notice an open box of cereal that someone left on the counter from breakfast three hours earlier. Would it kill anyone to close a box around here? Or put it away? Hoping the Frosted Flakes have not turned to floppy flakes, I close up the box and put it back in the cupboard. I look on the shelf below and realize we’re down to our last can of cat food. As I write “cat food” on our grocery list posted above the phone, I notice a reddish smudge (blood? ketchup?) stuck to the receiver. Ew, gross. I grab the canister of wipes and clean the phone smudge with the vigor of a surgeon’s pre-op scrub. Since I used the last wipe, I toss the empty canister into the recyclable container, causing the overflowing plastic bottles to fall all over the floor. I gather up the bottles, carry everything out to the larger recyclable container outside, and dump it all in. On my way back inside, I step over a puddle. A puddle on a rain-free weekend? Who left the hose on? I wonder, as I walk over to shut off the faucet and head back into the house.
Feeling productive, I realize that I’ve just prevented a fall on our stairs, a smell overtaking our second floor, a water stain, a finger amputation, a box of cereal from going stale, a starving kitty, a communicable disease from spreading via our phone and a higher water bill next month. I am one multitasking mama, I think as I walk with a get-‘er-done swagger. “What took you so long?” Kevin asked, as I walked back out to the porch 30 minutes later. “I thought you were just starting a load of laundry.” Oh crap.

A Sneaky Way to Motivate Yourself to Start
CYCLING By Danielle Radden
I bought a day planner. I’m going to organize my time. Right now, this day planner is sitting next to the day planners I bought in 2015, 2016, and 2017 and it’s equally untouched. Sometimes we buy things with the intent to use them to better ourselves. However, “the instant life fix” we were hoping for turns into another collector’s item. • Day Planners • P90X DVD set • Becoming a Millionaire for Dummies • Your fancy new bike There are hundreds of marketing tactics used to tempt you into buying the latest self-help product, but there is nothing that will ensure the continued usage of those products. (No, the treadmill is not intended to be used as a clothes rack. That doesn’t count). While I can’t offer a magical solution for the abundance of over-helpful and under-used “self-help paraphernalia”, I do have an idea (based on neuropsychology) to at least get you out and using that bike in the back of the garage. You
know, the one with flat tires that look like melted candy dripping around your wheel. The one with the helmet hanging from the handlebars doubling as a storage caddy for your gardening supplies. Yes, that bike. All right, I know that there are more repairs needed than dandelions before your bike will be ready for the trails (or roads). I know that’s preventing you from getting your cycling legs ready for the summer. Don’t worry though, you aren’t taking to the roads yet. Here are two steps to get you excited about fixing up your bike and getting out to ride again all while the weather is still iffy. Step 1 – Join a cycling gym Yes, leave your bike in the garage. Hop in your car and drive down to a gym that offers spin classes. If you’re really dedicated, look for a cycling specific studio. Seek an experience that bumps up the fun factor of riding. The key here is to find the sense of play that hides in a bike saddle. >>>
Fun is your brain’s most effective motivator. Don’t dwell on the challenge of fixing up your bike yet. Rather, reprogram your mind to think that bikes are genuinely fun. Every spin class is different, and every studio offers unique options. Try them out and find one that puts an authentic sense of enjoyment into your heart. The “play value” will keep you coming back and will inspire you to perhaps find the fun in your own bike when the weather gets better. Step 2 – Make friends You’ve found an indoor cycling gym and you’re having fun. Spin studios are great for surrounding yourself with people who ride bikes. Many people (myself included) who ride outside also frequent spin classes (especially because Colorado winters aren’t exactly warm). The good news for you is that in general, cyclists are excited about riding outside with other people. While you are in your spin classes make friends with the people around you. Ask them if they ride outside. Ask them if they know how to fix up bikes and if they would be willing to help you clean up your bike.
The support of a community has been a driving motivator since humans first roamed in tribes. By finding other members of a cycling community you are putting yourself into a situation where you will be more inclined to ride. Call it positive peer pressure. Sometimes the best way to reach a goal is to take an indirect route. For the goal of digging out your bike and riding this summer, condition your brain to recognize cycling as a fun activity by taking spin classes and surround yourself with a group of cycling peers. You will be out soaking up the sun with wind blowing in your face in no time. The best part is you will be laughing and smiling doing something you naturally find playful alongside others who support you and drive you to want this more. That is how the subconscious works… Step by step. Build a foundation of fun and community, and allow the motivation to follow. My name is Danielle Radden. I am a writer, a speaker and a science-based confidence coach. I teach skills for improving confidence using the neuropsychology of playfulness. Find more at confidencelessons.com.

Ways to Battle 5DENVER DRYNESS
KRYSTAL COVINGTON, MBA

to. Because not everyone is a fan of guzzling cantinas of water all day, here are other ways to get your daily dose of hydration that offer more flavor to your palate.
hile Denver is known for its 300 days of sunshine and gorgeous mountain views, it’s also notorious for yearlong dryness that causes hair, skin and even furniture to fall apart. As a Michigan transplant who’d never ventured west, I was accustomed to a more humid environment. Upon arriving in Denver, I quickly proceeded to dry up like a tumbleweed with no knowledge of how to combat the dry, itchy, scaly skin that accompanies low humidity.

I’ve met some incredible folks whose advice for battling Denver’s dryness saved my skin and sanity. Here are their helpful tips to make your northern Colorado life even better, and hopefully a little less dry.
Try a Daily Salad a Day
HYDRATE FROM THE INSIDE OUT Drink Water or Coconut Milk One of the most important tips I first received was to drink lots of water—much more than I was accustomed
Leslie Nance, holistic nutritionist and host of Fork It Over Radio on 1310 KFKA suggests drinking mineral rich coconut water. According to Leslie, “Coconut water efficiently replenishes body fluids and balances electrolytes. They even come in tasty flavors like Espresso and Ginger.”
SA L A D
Leslie Nance also recommends eating one big simple salad every day. “Iceberg lettuce is 96% water and you’ll eat it and receive that water. Opting for fresh spinach, which is 91% water, will give you both hydration plus
nutrients,” explained Leslie. With so many fun options to jazz up a salad these days, this is an easy daily staple to increase your water intake.

WHY In the spring of 2008, a group of health-care and business professionals who shared profound personal experiences with the life-enhancing benefits of essential oils came together with a common vision of bringing a new standard of essential oils to the world. They asked themselves some defining questions: “What if we could provide the world with a new and powerful wellness alternative?” “What if we could provide this new level of wellness through a mainstream approach to essential oils?” “What if we could source, test, and manufacture a higher quality of essential oil —more pure and more potent than any other oil available on the market today?” “What if we, in the most professional manner, could partner with major hospitals, doctors, scientists, and opinion leaders to provide the most compelling authentication of essential oils on the planet?” They organized a company and named it dōTERRA, a Latin derivative meaning “Gift of the Earth.” The first dōTERRA offering of 25 single oils and 10 oil blends was introduced for sale on April 25, 2008, to the acclaim of essential oil experts and product enthusiasts who immediately recognized the superior quality of dōTERRA therapeutic-grade essential oils. dōTERRA has continued to add wellness products and to expand their essential oils offering as the company has enjoyed tremendous growth since its beginning.

TEXT NECK By Dr. Lou Cavallo
Technology has truly changed how we live our lives. It has made our lives easier, and we are way more connected to each other than ever before. With these advancements come some disadvantages. The repetitive motion from using our smart phones, tablets and computers can cause micro traumas to our neck, upper back, shoulders, arms and hands. This can also cause other health issues like headaches and breathing abnormalities. This type of repetitive trauma is referred to as "forward head posture" or "text neck". A friend of mine in the dental field refers to it as her “rhino hump”. What causes this? The head weighs about 8-12 pounds, depending on the person. It sits upon this tiny column called the cervical spine. Think of a bowling ball on a twig. All day long you sit in front of your phone, tablet and/or computer. As you sit your neck and shoulders round forward causing the head to come farther and farther forward. The muscles, tendons and ligaments start to strain and get fatigued. Over time, this can cause disc herniations and irritated or pinched nerves. If left uncorrected, it can lead to more long-term chronic issues like early arthritis, vascular issues and/or breathing problems. Poor posture caused by imbalances in the body’s center of gravity can lead to intestinal problems, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, osteoporosis, hip and foot deformities, poor health, decreased quality of life and shortened life span. [Freeman JT, Posture in the aging and Aged Body JAMA 1957;165(7) pp843-846 JAMA Journal of the American Medical Association] How do you fix this? See a chiropractor! Specific chiropractic adjustments in conjunction with exercise, traction and proper ergonomics can reduce forward head posture and even correct it. Dr. Cavallo specializes in Gravitation Pattern Alignment (GPA). The basic concept of the GPA Chiropractic Technique is based on Newton’s third law of motion (for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction) and its effect on the human body. When any body part is out of alignment, gravity immediately forces the body to rebalance, creating distortions throughout the musculoskeletal chain. Additionally, our eyes are designed to remain horizontal, and the brain makes proprioceptive responses to hold the eyes level, which profoundly impacts how the body compensates against gravity. The combination of misalignment, gravity, and unlevel eyes will compound even a minor misalignment, taking a gradual, and increasing, toll on body parts and symptoms that may not appear for weeks or even years. Dr. Nelson Vetanze, DC states “The theory of GPA is to achieve and maintain the two-legged postural structure in an upright structure symmetrically balanced relative to the downward stress of the
gravitational field”. When this is achieved, discomfort is relieved. 1503 Mountain View Ave Longmont, CO 80501 303-678-8555 cavallochiropractic.com

taylor & garrett’s rustic river bend wedding My name is Larissa and I am a Colorado wedding and lifestyle photographer with a mission to capture real people in real ways. My non-negotiables: morning snuggles with my rescue pup, Hazel, hot chocolate, a good book and yoga pants. Garrett + Taylor's wedding day at The Lyons River Bend in Lyons, Co was nothing short of spectacular. Like an old pair of jeans and a cold beer on a Friday night, the whole day was a perfect fit for this fun-loving, family focused, country couple. Garrett and Taylor met in high school and although they didn't start dating then, they kept in touch afterwards and finally got together years later. They have two adventurous and handsome boys together that created such a genuine and heartfelt connection between these two. They live in a home with lots of land and love the country way of life. Their love for rustic country played into every detail of their wedding.
BY LARISSA WELCH My favorite moments from Taylor + Garrett's Day - Taylor receiving a PIG from Garrett as his wedding gift to her (captured in a picture of course) - Garrett twirling Taylor around during their first look so he could see just how beautiful she was - Taylor and Garrett's two kiddos dressed to the nines in their country attire - The live band that played during the ceremony and reception - Their first dance outside, under the stars while mother nature sprinkled some rain

Otero Natural T-Shirt in Creme Gold (also available in rust red, allure blue and green) $49
fashion spotlight
Otero Menswear is pioneering with innovative 3D Proportional Sizing designed for the short(er) man up to 5’9’’ Otero Menswear is high-quality fashion-forward clothing and accessories intelligently designed for the shorter man’s height, body type, and size to ensure a fit that is intentional and precise from the width of the collar to the length of the hems. Innovation is born from the struggle As is often the case, the most successful and innovative products are designed by the person, who experiences a problem, and has the will and resourcefulness to solve it. At 5' 7" tall, Steve Villanueva has personally experienced a lifetime of frustration while searching for high quality menswear that actually fit him. How well a garment fits each individual body depends on how well the designer captures the essential dimensions, but if a sizing system doesn’t account for exact height and body type, then no garment will fit well. For example, a man with a chest size of 40” might be 5’5”, or he might be 5’8”. Should these two men wear the same length shirt? Of course not! But in most stores, they both have to settle for a generic “Medium” size that looks awkwardly long or short. To create the perfect proportional fit for the shorter man, the Otero team collected and analyzed body measurement data from over 10,000 men who had heights ranging from 5’4’’ to 5’9’’ (1.63 to 1.75 meters). In each case, they studied body measurements essential to a comfortable, attractive fit (chest, waist, hip, inseam, height) and analyzed the ratios between these essential dimensions. The result was the proprietary 3D Proportional Sizing methodology – Height (5’4’’ – 5’9’’), Size (s – xxl) and Body Type (triangular or rectangular) with 21 essential combinations. “Our unique 3D sizing allows for a more aesthetic appeal as the shirt looks properly proportioned to the individual’s body and provides a superior fit to typical ‘off-the-rack’ menswear.” – states Co-founder and CEO, Steve Villanueva.

Otero’s emphasis on inclusivity and self-confidence in the design of their men’s clothing label represents a new model for thinking, acting and speaking out on behalf of a customer segment that, globally, makes up over 40% of all men. Since the advent of mass production, men's clothing brands have designed to an imaginary “average” body type based on a man who is 5’10”-5’11”, resulting in clothes that are too long and disproportionately designed
for the shorter man. This approach completely ignores that fact that 40% of men are below 5’9”, and men in general have fundamentally differing body types, which is the key to an impeccable fit. Emphasizing elegant simplicity and intelligent functionality the Otero collection features polos from basic everyday wear to high-end garments and t-shirts in best-selling styles and colors affordably priced between $59 and $149. All of the garments are created from the finest natural cotton fibers and feature Otero’s signature 3D Proportional Sizing. The Otero collection is complemented by a range of accessories handcrafted in durable, luxurious full grain leather by a family of Greek artisans, who have paired with the Otero designers to craft a custom line of products for professional men on the go. A “Great Wolf” Weekend Getaway On a late winter weekend, our family decided to avoid the heavy ski traffic on I-70 and made the short drive from Erie to the Great Wolf Lodge. The lodge is conveniently located, less than 90 minutes to the south and about 15 minutes to the north of downtown Colorado Springs. It was an easy decision to make, since our son had been telling us, for months, about all the fun things to do there. He had heard about it from several classmates. Being able to avoid I-70 on a winter weekend was an added plus. My husband and I decided to have our son (age 11) bring a friend (age 13) along, anticipating that they would be able to entertain themselves and we could get some time to ourselves and much needed R & R. Anticipation grew the closer we got as we decided to play a game to see who would spot the Great Wolf Lodge first. The last time that we had been to Colorado Springs in 2010, the lodge hadn’t been built. My son, his friend, and I kept looking to the west. Maybe it
was because we were marveling at Pikes Peak or looking at the Air Force Academy. However, this allowed my husband to be the first to spot the Great Wolf Lodge on the east side of the freeway. You can’t miss it! Nevertheless, we all did, except for my husband. My son and his friend were disappointed that they didn’t win our little game. That disappointment gave way to incredible excitement as we drove around the lodge to the entrance. The massive waterslides protruding from the building were enough to make them forget about everything else and immediately start talking about getting into their bathing suits. After unloading the car and walking into the grand entrance, we were treated to a warm welcome at the reception. The staff provided a great overview of the resort and all of the amenities. There were several other families checking in who
My husband and I noshed on the tasty goodies on the welcome plate, which included brie, salami, and cornichons, while enjoying some “kid free”, quiet time. We then decided to explore the resort, walking around to see the various attractions and dining options that were available. Since the boys had wristbands, we knew that they could get back into the room even if we were not there. As we had built up a bit of an appetite, but didn’t want to eat too much, we decided on a few slices of pizza at “Hungry as a Wolf”. It was quite good, hitting the proverbial “spot”. I had left my purse in our room and my husband had also left his wallet there. However, no problem, as you can just swipe your wristband to pay anywhere in the resort. This is a great feature, since you don’t need to carry unnecessary items with you, especially if you go to the Waterpark.

had kids with birthdays. Each time, all of the staff would do a wonderful birthday chant, putting smiles on all of the kids faces. After completing the checking in process, which included getting our wristbands and signing the boys up for MagiQuest, we made our way to our room. No searching the pockets for the room key or fumbling with it when your hands are full with other items - just swipe the wristband at the door lock to open it. We had a room with two queen beds that was very spacious as well as a great view of the mountains to the west. While my husband and I were still taking in the view of Pikes Peak, the boys had already changed into their bathing suits. Before we knew it, they were leaving and saying “See you later; we are headed to the Waterpark!”. This weekend was off to a great start as things only got better.
Before going back to the room to catch up on some reading, we decided to check out the Waterpark and see if we could spot our son and his friend. To get there, you walk through a large shop that has everything you could possibly need related to swimming, from bathing suits to goggles. So don’t fret if you forgot to pack something, since you will be able to find it here. I was truly surprised at the size of the Waterpark, which includes something for everyone from the splash pool for toddlers, to a wave pool, to four different types of waterslides. Two of the slides are multi-person on two or four person inner tubes. There is a solo slide for speed demons and then there is a set of solo slides where you can race against others, with your elapsed time
displayed at the finish line. You can definitely spend countless hours in this Waterpark, without getting bored. My husband and I split up to see if we could locate the boys. After searching for at least 15 minutes, without avail, we figured that they may have gone back to the room. As we got off the elevator to head to our room, we ran into my son and his friend. Both were now changed and wearing their Great Wolf Lodge Wolf Pass, which allows them access to various attractions. We barely got a “Hi! We’re off to do the MagiQuest.”, before they ran past us and jumped on the elevator. This was turning out to be much better than I could have ever imagined. The boys didn’t ask or seem to need any parental involvement. And since everything is well contained within the resort, I felt very comfortable letting them do activities on their own. After a couple of hours, my husband I decided it was time to get the boys to come back to the room so that we could get ready for dinner. I called my son on his cell phone, thankfully there is great reception within the building, and asked him to come back to the room. A few minutes later the two of the arrived, visibly exhausted. Over dinner, they proceeded to tell us that they were trying to finish the MagiQuest in record time and that this adventure was having them go seek different locations all over the resort. They were thoroughly enjoying themselves! After dinner, they wanted to check out a few of the other activities and get back to the MagiQuest. My husband and I decided to watch a movie and relax. I eventually fell asleep before the boys had returned. My husband told me the next morning that they didn’t come back until midnight, completely exhausted, but with huge smiles on their face as they had completed the MagiQuest. Surprisingly, both boys were up early on Sunday morning and ready for more action. We told them that we would meet them in the Grand Lobby at 10 a.m. to have some breakfast. When we met up with them, they told us about the ceremony for completing MagiQuest and becoming a Master Magi that they wanted to be part of. They had already played a round of minigolf and completed the Howler’s Peak Ropes Course. Since we didn’t have too much time and were actually not too hungry after a large dinner, we opted or a quick breakfast at the Dunkin Donuts within the resort. Everyone had a breakfast sandwich - the boys had some shakes, my husband his morning coffee, and I enjoyed their hot chocolate, which has been my favorite for more than 20 years, dating back to my days of living in New York City, where grabbing one on the way to work in the winter became a daily ritual. Off to the MagiQuest ceremony, where everyone that had completed the quest was “knighted” and received a certificate. The boys were now ready to spend some more time in the Waterpark.
Family Fun
with a few other kids their age. Even though they had been there for more than two hours now, it was still difficult to convince them to leave. “Just one more wave!” was the repeated comment. However, all great things must come to an end, and we eventually got them out of the pool, as we wanted to be home by mid-afternoon to meet up with some neighbors, which had been planned long before our trip to the Great Wolf Lodge. Fortunately, it was less than a 90-minute drive home. Our son and his friend couldn’t stop talking about all the fun things they did and how they definitely want to go back. I’ve got to say that this short weekend getaway was so much more than I had ever expected. Our son and his friend had a fantastic time, being engaged, both physically and mentally, for the entire time of our stay. Best of all - all that without any “electronics” that tend to occupy much of their typical weekends. It was also one of the most relaxing weekends that my husband and I were able to share in a long time. So, if you are looking for a great place to have your kids entertained while finding relaxation for yourself, I highly recommend a stay at the Great Wolf Lodge.

We quickly headed back to our room, so they could change into their bathing suits, while my husband packed our belongings. As my husband and I checked out, the boys were already off to have some more fun in the water. A nice perk of the Great Wolf Lodge is that they let you continue to use their facilities after you have checked out. My husband loaded up the car and set aside a change of clothes for the boys, so that they wouldn’t have to ride back to Erie in wet bathing suits. The two of us relaxed in the Grand Lobby, where you have a large fireplace and incredible views of the mountains. We talked, read and made some phone calls to pass the time. After a couple of hours, we decided it was time to find the boys before they turned into prunes. We found them in the Wave Pool, body surfing

all who taste it agree hasincomparable flavor! For the rest of the imbibing community, including those who prefer a bit more kick in their home-grown libation, the wait is finally over! Black Canyon Whiskey has arrived, and not a moment too soon! >>>
When founder Fred Lesnick first visited his daughter, Jeannetta in Hotchkiss, Co and she introduced him to the Black Canyon territory of Gunnison, Fred fell in love with the area and launched a business endeavor that is still growing to this day. Along with his wife, Susan, the married couple decided to create the rich goldencolored caramel and vanilla tasting, one-of-a-kind / white-oak whiskey that people are raving about. Although the whiskey is named after the region itself, Fred has moved the Black Canyon Distillery business to a larger facility, namely 4340 State Highway 65 in Longmont/Mead, Colorado, wherein a large tasting room is available to current and prospective customers. One taste of this unique blend and you, too will be a returning customer before long! Fred and Susan have expanded their menu to include a bourbon (Old Blue), a corn mash whiskey (Black Canyon Corn Whiskey), a winter blend with cinnamon and maple (Black Canyon Winter), a vodka with fresh jalapeno, Fresno, Serrano, and habanero peppers (Mayhem Creek Pepper Vodka), and a coffee liqueur (Coffee Couloir) to name a few spirits that round out their inventory. The duo are members of “Colorado Proud” and “Made in Colorado” business organizations who cater to companies that utilize ingredients from local farmers and businesses in the state. Another great innovation that Black Canyon Distillery offers is its partnership with Rick England, owner of Richardo’s Decaf Coffee Liqueur, an award-winning (World’s Best Coffee Liqueur - London, 2016) beverage and equally amazing product. The friendship between Rick and the Lesnicks began back in 2011, when Rick dropped in to their distillery with a bottle of Richardo’s. “They were gracious and welcoming, and we had a great time talking about the (liquor) business,” Rick said. Last year, it became clear that Richardo’s needed a larger capacity facility to keep up with the demand, so Rick paid Susan and Fred another call. It was perfect
timing, as Black Canyon was also looking to grow their capacity and had just moved into their new distillery and tasting room. Soon, there were handshakes all around and the collaboration began. “They welcomed me with open arms and said they’d be happy to make Richardo’s for me,” Rick said. It too, can now be found at the distillery, especially in the tasting room, which is large enough to hold community events and other functions. Susan and Fred’s motto is simple: Keep the good spirits of Colorado running, the imagination flowing and the parties never-ending. Cheers! As a young man living in Colorado in the early 80’s, I couldn’t have agreed more with that motto. One of my favorite pastimes was also America’s, namely baseball. Mine, however was a bit different! Along with some select friends or “fellow athletes”, we would combine the two (beer and whiskey) shamelessly calling it “bar baseball”, wherein the competitors would engage for as many “innings” as was possible. One bat (bar bottle of Coors) and one ball (shot of Jack) would comprise an inning. Although I never got past the third inning, some of my “Boulderite Baseball Buddies” would, on occasion go to “extra innings”. To this day I don’t know how they did it! I do know, however that the intro of a Colorado whiskey will sweeten the game for the youthful among us, as long as they have a designated driver or “umpire” if you will. Enough talk about these great Colorado companies; let’s go and get some!

CHEF BY AMY KATZ
WANTED: NEW-TO-AREA CHEF/FOODIE SEEKING NOCO’S BEST RESTAURANTS I am a chef, a self-taught culinary artist who traveled from corn country Midwest to the mountains in NoCo with my family for new opportunity and a plethora of things to do and see. I owned a restaurant back home for many years as well as worked in the industry from dishwasher to server from the age of 12. I live for food and wine! They say it “gets in your blood”. I concur. I am also a foodie. I love every aspect of the theatre in hospitality—that feeling where everyone knows your name and being served from the heart some soul food at a place that truly gets it. On the flip side, there are the establishments whose only concern is taking your money and serving garbage for food, which is becoming all too common in this world of fast paced greed. Therefore, my mission is to seek out the best and sort through the rest via my own reviews. >>>
While familiarizing myself with the area, I have been investigating what are considered the best restaurants to patronize. Hospitality is a dying art. Authentic cooking is also a dying art. I’m out to find the “homes away from home” that are passionate about their craft and how they treat their guests. I found one worthy of print in Windsor: Hearth Restaurant and Pub, where their motto is “home is where the hearth is”. Hearth was the first restaurant I visited after moving to the area. I just happened to drive by and gazed up at this modern balcony jam-packed with people, overlooking Windsor Lake. Curiosity lured us upstairs, and upon entering the buzzing, chatter-filled room, we were cheerfully greeted by the General Manager Stephanie. The décor is very modern – abstract art all around, yet seductively warm and cozy. We sat at the pizza bar and watched the chefs majestically create bubbling master pies in the massive wood-fired oven, and Henry even shared a tasting of the divine baconized Brussels sprouts that just came out hot and fresh from the mesmerizing flames. As a chef, I appreciate real ingredients and authentic passion behind the hands that are creating. Being able to see into a kitchen speaks volumes for the operation, as it means the business is confident in its integrity and what is being offered to the consumer from the kitchen to the front of the house. This very rare to find nowadays, but always present at Hearth where they do actually know our names and what our usuals are. Service is an actual verb; a well-choreographed dance of knowledge, yet full of authentic friendliness and interest in the customer, which to be treated as such when spending my money is beyond refreshing. Hearth offers an array of delights from the wood-fired eclectic pizzas to house smoked salmon and plentiful small plates, roasted beet salad, hipster burger with bacon jam, fish n’ chips, pan seared tuna and quite generous happy hours offerings for select food and beverage between 3–6 p.m. daily, all day on Monday. Hearth serves lunch on Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., and brunch on Sundays, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. This is a place to visit if you’re curious as to visit any remaining restaurants featuring real food and enlightened hospitality.

Canine Influenza
BY DR. SALLY TOWNER
what you should know & look for Fever, coughing, lethargy, lack of appetite—flu season has hit many households hard this season, but these symptoms also describe a highly contagious viral disease in dogs that has been reported across the U.S. including Colorado. Canine influenza, or more commonly known as the “dog flu”, is transmitted by droplets from a coughing or barking dog, sharing objects (bowls/leashes/kennels), or from people who have interacted with an infected dog. There are two types of the canine influenza virus: canine H3N8 influenza was first identified in 2004, and canine H3N2 influenza was first identified in 2015. Both strains have been found in dogs from all 50 states. While canine influenza is highly contagious among dogs, there is no evidence that either strain can infect humans. Almost all dogs exposed to the canine influenza virus become infected, and approximately 80% of those develop clinical signs within 1-5 days. The most common symptoms include coughing, nasal/ ocular discharge, lethargy, lack of appetite and a fever between 104ºF and 105ºF. Some dogs may develop secondary pneumonia and its complications if canine influenza is untreated. If you suspect that your dog has canine influenza, contact your veterinarian immediately. Treatment for canine influenza may include fluids for dehydration, medication to increase the appetite, and antibiotics for any secondary infections that develop. Most dogs recover in 7-10 days, but it may take some up to 3-4 weeks. Any exposed dogs should be isolated at home for 4 weeks to prevent the spread of the disease. If your dog has canine influenza, clean all household surfaces including clothing, bedding, bowls, toys and kennels to minimize disease transmission. The virus can remain active in the environment for up to 48 hours. Since canine influenza was discovered more recently, reinfection has not been fully researched.
Canine Influenza important information about your pets
iPrevention is key to avoid canine influenza. If your dog is at high risk, for example, visiting dog parks, kennels, grooming facilities, neighborhood dogs, or if anyone in your family spends time with dogs outside your family, then getting the bivalent vaccine is important to prevention for your dog. The vaccine covers both strains of canine influenza. More information on canine influenza can be found at dogflu.com and cdc.gov/flu/canineflu. Consult with your family veterinarian if you suspect your pet may have influenza or if you have questions about the vaccine.

NORTHERN COLORADO -BIGFOOT COUNTRY? PART 2: “THE NATIVE AMERICAN EXPERIENCES
A
By John J.K. Small
lthough in recent past, the sightings of Northern Colorado’s Bigfoot or “Sasquatchlike” creatures have “tailed off ” to approximately 125 over the last decade or so, it wasn’t always that sparse. The Native American Tribes of the mountainous regions from Montana, to the north, down to New Mexico in the south all have a common denominator present in their individual folklores and tale-telling. The state of Colorado, which features over 50 mountain peaks with altitudes of more than 13,50014,000 feet within the 380 miles of east to west territory certainly did (and more than likely still do) offer multiple habitats for the various species of recorded “monsters” and extraordinary life forms in general. Even though each tribe seems to record its own dangerous haunting creatures, equipped with “personal” description and preferred appetites, all talk of a huge hairy man that lives in the deep forests of each region for over two thousand miles from Canada to Mexico. These stories are also corroborated by the West Coastal Indian Tribes from Southern California
to northern Washington State. In fact, all western territory Native American folklore includes some form of wild man of the woods with names like “Sasquatch”, “The Yowie” to “The Wood Booger” from The Great Mississippi River to the vast Pacific Ocean. Perhaps the most prominent of all legends comes from The Cheyenne Tribes of the Rocky Mountain Regions, encompassing three states including Colorado. One of the largest set of Native American tribes in our state was the Cheyenne, numbering at least 13 separate tribal units spanning the entire state’s front range on into Wyoming to the north. Their great praise for the “Maxemistas” or their “Big Elder Brothers” is profound in their overall folklore. They even refer to them in a group of sorts, calling them “The Hevhaitanio”. This “hairy man clan” is much like other indigenous tribal mentioning of the hominid creatures known as the “Chiye-Tanka”. Including the other large regional tribes like the Kiowa and the Arapaho, all relay the great respect and spiritual awe of these creatures. Although some Arapaho reports from the mid to late 1700's claim that these cave dwelling creatures. >>>
Although some Arapaho reports from the mid to late 1700's claim that these cave dwelling creatures are dangerous and aggressive when threatened, overall Cheyenne records describe them as reclusive and shy, much like bears who also live in the caves of the front range from Fort Collins to Pueblo. Some tribes even track them down the range into Taos, New Mexico. Cheyenne legends also include the great creature in their famed "creation myth" playing pivotal roles throughout. Even the Dine and Navajo Tribes of the southern Rockies known as The Sangres de Cristo Range, from Blanca Peak in the south to the north's Crestone Peak talk of the creature and its realm known as the "sisnajinni" or where the "black medicine belt exists". Even further south do both ancient Native Americans, The Hopi and Zuni Tribes describe these creatures in their folklore. Their reverence for the hairy men of the wilderness is more from a spiritual perspective, for they look upon them as "messengers" from the "ultimate creator", warning us humans of our transgressions as a species or a collective-mankind. For those of us who truly believe in these awesome beings, yet don't understand their socalled "place" in and of the real world, we wait patiently for the privilege of seeing one, or more than one in "their real world" habitat. Maybe if the all-important scientific community would take more of an interest in these mysterious
creatures, less skepticism and denial may generate from the general public and more reasonable pursuits could yield much more information for us by which we can benefit, or at least from which we could learn. Next issue: Part 3 - “The Multiple Close Encounters of the 1980’s through the 1990’s”
