The idea requires a name and a brand, so that the world understands that this is a significant single entity. After a ‘consultation process’ with all the key stakeholders the name ‘Capital North’ has been selected - combining purpose and place. It’s easy to remember and recall.

Representation
Cities - Towns
Initial research conducted was to generate and understanding of what the ‘Northern Powerhouse’
Another area I covered with my research was the cities themselves, looking at what things represent
represented and how this could be converted into design communication. By doing so, I selected
them. From flags to the structures of town halls, all this data would later be of use when approaching
main focus points to base my work on. Cities, transport, heritage, culture, finance..
the development process as it would aid in tailoring the design to represent each city.
Connect Establishing a connection between the design and the consumer is key in creating clear communication, for this I looked into transport maps and iconography that represents transport. This also gave me a vision of what was already existent.

Development
Brand North My development explored two different approaches, one being more playful and the other more corporate. The playful approach used soft colours and a rounded typeface to create a softer logo. The idea behind this approach was the connection between the cities, with each city represented by a dot. The corporate idea plays with the name ‘Northern Powerhouse’ by creating a logo that represents an industrial factory or a powerplant.

Final Design
Outcome The final design pitched to DBA was based on Dan Everitt designs taking different elements and ideas from the rest of the group. The idea behind it is that each colour represents one of the cities of ‘Capital North’. A flag was used as the main logo, as a flag is representative to a city. This is adapted to each of the deliverables, strips of colour representing the connection between each city.
