My goal is to design attractive and sustainable spaces for people and at the same time, to be able to inspire the future design world. Welcome to my personal project. - Tristan
PREFACE
In today’s world, working on the go has been a daily part of the day for every individual. The hassle of jumping from place to place and using the table of cafes like starbucks to make our own workspace summarised the challenges that one will face when working on the go. More of that work is being done from a coffee shop, a co-working space, or even our kitchen table. Work can almost be done anywhere. However, imagine the anxiety attack one will encounter when they forget the physical documents back in office for the next client, where one is at jurong and the latter, at orchard. Moreover, work productivity is reduced greatly when we are on the go as there are limited access to workspace documents. We often think that a big spacious workspace in the office or simply in the office will greatly increase our work efficiency, certainly that is not the case in today’s world. Workspaces like open office environments, offices resembling like closets and shared desks are the standard where business companies will resort to when designing. In this way, some of them may be exposed to distractors and this situation is expected to worsen in the future as lesser and lesser spaces are available. People is living in the world of insufficient space. With the growing population and the increasing amount of buildings, there will be a problem such as land scarcity. My project ‘Stow’ aims to design a compact transformative private working space for the public. “Stow’ uses the approach of creating a ever-changing transformative working environment and land scarity as a starting point. It explore the problems that the user will experience at various scenarios and attempt to tackle it. In the next few pages, I will start off with my design strategies for my design proposal of the future workspace and end off with existing designs that spurred in my inspiration thoughts.

01 STOW @CONCOURSE A compact and transformative workspace
PROJECT TYPE: Commercial ARCHITECTURAL STYLE: High-rise, Postmodern LOCATION: Beach Road, Kallang, Singapore FLOOR COUNT: 41
The design proposal for the redefining of a compact transformative workspace, seeks to revitalize an area of the Concourse office space. It began with the idea of creating a productive and yet ever changing workspace of the future. As the world is getting more populated, space will be getting cramper. Instead of having a fixed working space, various different components of the space can be moved to provide more purpose and functional spaces. The way of working changes from the past till now and it will never be exactly the same as before. Therefore, my design is to further enhance the working space and create new ways of working for the land scarity future. The main idea was to provide multiple functions within the same workspace area. It suggests a new typology that uses opactiy and mixed various programs with intended spaces to create alot of formal and informal spaces. These spaces are where innovation and creativity can be fostered.

SITE ANALYSIS A series of analyses were carried out. Looking into the existing site, structure of the design, circulation and different occupants. The site is strategically located on the fringe of Central Business District (CBD) city area, small retail business, apartments and a variety of eating areas nearby. These allows commuters to work while waiting to meet their clients nearby. It is also well connected to all major points in Singapore via expressways as well as direct access to Nicoll Highway MRT Station via a covered walkway. In addition, panoramic sea view and city view enables working to be relaxing. Though the tower is of age, much time and consideration was put into the site planning phrase as it uses solar shading, communal gardens and external balconies to address the climate and exploit the lush tropical vegetation. Designed by renowned architect Paul Rudolph, The Concourse stands out as a distinctive landmark from afar due to its remarkable design, with its exceptional use of glass and angles. He has created a building literally caressed by light, allowing you to enjoy Singapore’s horizon from any vantage point. It is also octagonal in plan, as the number “8” for the octagon is associated with prosperity in Chinese culture. SITE PLAN

POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS Possible people coming to this place had been studied. Firstly, freelancers and hipsters need a working area for them to startup and work on the go as they does not have the financial capability to have their own office yet. Tourists in singapore coming to the CBD area may be on a business trip and needs a place to do their work. Residents living nearby Concourse are also able to work more effectively compared to home. The office also served as a workplace for people waiting for their spouse.

CIRCULATION OF OFFICE FLOOR
This area view is obstructed mostly by shophouses and buildings. Sunray will be present as sun set in the west. Moreover, there is tendency of traffic noise pollution during the peak hours.
This area view is highly recommended as it has a clear view of the skyline of singapore.
360 DEGREE WINDOW VIEW
This area view is obstructed directly by buildings such as golden mile tower and complex. Moreover, sun setting down will be heavily present during working hours.
This area view is accompany by the skyline of singapore and is not obstruct by anything.
11
FINAL OFFICE DESIGN PLACEMENT The final office placement examined the factors surrounding the tower such as the consideration of traffic pollution, scenery view and the sunrise, sunset direction. Therefore, this area of the floor is selected to be the ideal design space as it represent the productive zone.

DESIGN STRATEGIES
Close Neatly Packed
‘COMPACT” Compact is being define as a unit that is closely and neatly packed together. It is arranged within a small space and designed to fit. Compact means ‘to compress or squeeze together’, like how we compact our bags for maximum storage when needed. Compact is introduce to reduce the amount of space taken up and with the current world population rising, it is slowly stepping up as one of the key component in design world. By implementing compact into my design, it allow multiple functions to happen at the same small space, maximising the space to the most.

‘TRANSFORMATIVE SPACE’ Next, Transformative space is being define as multi-functional, one that provide series of changeable layouts. It is movable and there is no standardization in arrangement. Transformative space enabled activities to happen anywhere and the interior space can never be the same. By creating transformative spaces in my office space, it greatly increases the high degree of customisation and allows privacy.

DESIGN STRATEGIES
‘CONTROLLING SHARED OPENNESS’ In this project, idea of creating a workplace having little segeration between each other become the focus point. At the same time, not forgetting the privacy needed. Therefore, the entire office design will be based upon the density of privacy from the least to the most. Using this strategy changes and generate new ways of working effectively and increases productivity.
SECONDARY ENTRANCE
MAIN ENTRANCE
The office space consist of two entrances, the main and secondary. The main entrance will likely be the one where there is alot of commuters going in and out. Therefore, the public areas will be situated there whereas on the other hand, the more private areas will be near the secondary entrance as there is lesser human traffic around.
15
BRIEF PROGRAM ANALYSIS My office design consider the various aspects of different several programs which enhance the whole experience. Program zones will be layout accordingly to connect with each other and to provide users with a smooth experience of the space.
PRODUCTIVE ZONE
RELAXATION ZONE
Productive and relaxation zones, two different intensity zones were crafted out to divide the space apart.

SPATIAL PROGRAM My office design consider the various aspects of privacy and the activities within the zone. There are total of four zones. From the left, the relaxation zone has the least privacy and allow users to take a break from the stressful work for awhile. On the other hand, the other side contain the working areas from the public to the most private workspace situated near the secondary entrance as the area will be less crowded compared to the main entrance. The ‘STOW’ signage is finished with coated black powder and entirely made of aluminium. The backlight allows it to glow and stand out in the reception space.
The reception space served as one place which allows people to wait for their working friends inside ‘STOW’. To avoid people standing around the walking path, seating area between the main entrance were placed. In this way, it allows the space to remain open and uncluttered.

The window seats of the lounge and breakout area provides an opportunity for the ’STOW’ members to work differently as compared to the normal desk table in offices. The whole area was made out of laminated plywood to provide the lively atmosphere one should be having in this area.
Addressing the need of storage space, ‘STOW’ provide locker access for members to put their personal belongings when they are here. By simply accessing the “STOW’ phone app and select the vacant locker that you prefer, the locker is yours till check out.

BOOKSHELVES
MAKE/SHIFT
The design of the shelves can be customised simply by removing or by adding more. It expands and contracts to fit into different sized spaces. Each individual module contain specific type of books for reading and will be updated constantly. The materials for the shelves are being made of a relatively eco-material, a polypropylene that can be broken down and reused. The reason for the chosen material is mainly because of the weight for it to support itself and therefore, a light-weight material was used.

ENTERTAINMENT SPACE
In order to distribute light evenly, LED light strips is an ideal solution as it eliminates glare by turning the whole layout space into a soft light source that provides uniform light distribution and colour temperature.
The free space allows informal meetings to take place and at the same time, ‘STOW’ members can also enjoy their breaks here with some entertainment shows.
INDIVIDUAL SEATING MODULES The standalone seating modules provide the required alone privacy and also effectively use the space to create places for seating.
OFFICE 04 / I29 INTERIOR ARCHITECTS The office create flexible seating area to make better use of unused space. It is a good way of creating more functional module to fit in as much as possible. This theory generated inspiration for my design.

PRINTER
The design of the printing studio uses the notion of conceal yet without any partition to craft out the additional area within the same walkway space. In this way, the whole space became private.

PANTRY Before starting work, STOW’s members should be well prepared and well fed. Thus, this section is being mentioned before the design of the workplaces. Co-working offices contain a place for a temporary relieve from work and STOW is no different. The pantry provides a getaway from work and is placed at the ideal scenery spot where the view looks across singapore.

And if you are in need of some fresh scenery, you can simply move across to the other end of the space and continue working. The design wants to promote creativity and the way to enhance it is to make it as comfy as possible.

PANELS Most of the office space have been separated by using clear glass to allow natural light to be brought into the deep work space as a critical part of the design concept. In this way, it is able to share, the space, the light and the purity of creativity. Notes, brainstorming ideas can be written on the sliding panels which work as a privacy panel too. The design helps to omit all boundaries and integrates all spaces.

CONCLUSION
The prefabricated interior has been an important element in the creation of modern design of interior spaces. However, the issue of space getting smaller and smaller somehow enlighten me and tell me that the interior space must change to accomodate such changes. Therefore, I decided to create the design opportunities in the empty spaces within the four walls. These transformed the disintegration of interior constructed wall and space defined by those walls, becoming furniture. The ability to connect it together transformed the place. From this project, I learnt the flexibility of the multi functional furniture, it can almost quite literally fabricate the whole space by arranging into full height partitions. There are almost endless possibilities of transforming the interior space and I believe that with the world population risingand our living area are getting smaller and smaller, I believe the way of design is going to change as time goes by.
