The International Superyacht Society’s (ISS) Design and Leadership Awards were created in 1990 to recognize outstanding achievements in the creation of large yachts. 33 years later, the yachting industry looks forward to the one day of the year where exceptional contributions in yachting are celebrated. ISS’s annual Design and Leadership Awards were hosted on Thursday, October 26, at The Ritz-Carlton on Fort Lauderdale beach. Individuals were honored in five different award categories.
The Distinguished Crew Award recognized yacht crew members that exemplified the professional standards that yacht crew members are held to. These crew members exceeded their normal duties and were honored for their acts of service. Nominations for this award were made by the yachting industry and the winning selection was made by a panel of judges. This year’s Distinguished Crew Award winner was Capt, Richard Kirkby and the crew of M/Y Mayan Queen IV. Kirkby and the CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

crew of Mayan Queen IV saved the lives of numerous migrants after a ship sailing from Tobruk, Libya to Italy capsized in international waters near Pylos, Greece. Highly skilled individuals are needed to construct a yacht, and this year’s Artisan Award looked to honor one of those experts. These individuals are known for their continuous delivery of exceptional work that has become the standard of yachting. Nominations for this award were made by the yachting industry and the selection was made by a panel of judges. The winner of the 2023 Artisan Award was Mike Moor from Silver Yachts. The Excellence in Improving Yachting Award celebrates the active stewardship of marine ecosystems and was nominated by owners and the yachting industry. The winning selection was made by a panel of judges that looked to recognize an individual or group that worked towards conserving resources and creating a more sustainable future in yachting. The winner of this year’s Excellence in Improving Yachting Award was Seabed 2030.
2023’s Leadership Award looked to honor an individual or company who has helped make the superyacht industry flourish. Nominations for this award were made by the ISS Board of Directors and the winner was selected by the Leadership Awards winners committee which is made up of previous award recipients. This year’s winner was François Zuretti. The Excellence in Technology Award spans a wide range of technology within the yachting industry. Although any piece of technology used in the yachting industry could have been nominated for this award, an emphasis on innovation and ingenuity was made when picking a winner. The winner of this year’s Excellence in Technology Award was DRIFT. Yachts were also honored during the Design and Leadership Awards with 10 different award categories. These yachts could only be nominated by yacht builders, designers, and refit yards.

EDITOR’S LETTER
A Voice From Home
Home of Yacht Swag
By Erik Petersen
I’ve always been a little jealous of journalists from a bygone era - the ones who could hole up in a watering hole and get their stories that way. I worked for many years for a newspaper in England; one of the old-timers there once explained to me how when local police wanted to give journalists a juicy story, they’d choose between walking down to the pub the newspaper reporters frequented or the one where the BBC folks bent an elbow. Those days are largely gone now - but in its own way, the tradition lives on at FLIBS. Just to be clear, I didn’t turn up at the Oasis Lounge looking for a manilla envelope containing classified documents. I just wanted to hear interesting stories - and at FLIBS, the lounge and lunch spot for crew is a good place to start. Darreth Scott and Amy Whitcombe were nice enough to let me interrupt their chicken dinners. Darreth and Amy are both South African - he’s from Port Elizabeth, she’s from Johannesburg. She joined the industry just four months ago; this is her first FLIBS. He’s a veteran with a couple years and two previous FLIBS under his belt. For Darreth, an event such as FLIBS is all about giving others the opportunities he wasn’t given. “It gives green crew the opportunity to work on the boats,” he said. “Green crew are always eager to be there, they
work hard.” At an event like FLIBS, they can see the variety of boats - and owners. “It’s the perfect opportunity to help them,” he said. Nobody gave him that opportunity and he struggled for six months when he first got into the industry. “I think people don’t really understand the yachting industry until they’ve been in the yachting industry,” he said. “All you’re told is to get on your hands and knees and start washing.” Amy’s still learning the industry and dealing with novice problems like seasickness. But she’s getting the hang of it. “It gets better over time, you get used to it,” she said. “As soon as the boat stops, it disappears. It’s weird.” And anyway, it’s a small price to pay for what she cites as the best parts of the job - the different places and people and of course, riding the toys. But even if you’re loving seeing new places, voices from home are also good. That, Amy and Darreth agreed, is another nice thing about FLIBS - all the other people from your home country you get to see. And for a pair of South Africans in Fort Lauderdale, this year’s FLIBS times nicely with another event - Saturday’s 2023 Rugby World Cup final between South Africa and New Zealand. Predictions? You bet. “South Africa’s going to win, for sure,” Darreth said, “and the score’s going to be be 28-24.”
