Future depends on attitudes By Lucy Chabot Reed In this 50th year of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, there has been much talk of how yachting used to be, how far it has come, and the lessons we learn as the economic slowdown puts the breaks on yachting’s meteoric rise. Perhaps Bob Saxon, former president of Camper & Nicholsons USA, said it best at the Ft. Lauderdale Mariners Club seminar yesterday when he said, “We are in a Potemkin village.” “As rosy of a picture as I have painted, it’s a misleading picture, at best,” he said. “A Potemkin village is like a movie set. It looks good but it may be made of cardboard and 2x4s.” Saxon described some of what is affecting the yachting market now.
First is the diminished wealth of clients. Second is the attitude society exhibits toward wealth. Danielle Masse, director of the yacht division at insurance giant Chartis, shared her thoughts on the trouble in the large yacht sector this year. “This year has forced many of us to focus on the short term – save me money – and neglect the long-term interests of our clients,” she said. “Our job and responsibility is to educate the owners that we have to keep their short- and long-term interests in balance.” Read more of Masse’s thoughts on crew lay-offs, as well as a salvor and underwriter ideas about Lloyd’s Open Form agreements, and how insurers value a yacht, all in the rest of this story on www.the-triton.com.

GEOCACHING
What it is and why we’re doing this By David Reed

Navigating to the stars and doing celestial sights have really become sort of old school because of GPS. Over the past decade, a new fad called geocaching has started, letting us use our GPS units for fun. Geocaching is similar to the 150year-old game letterboxing, which uses clues and references to landmarks embedded in stories. The Triton has found five primary spots at FLIBS and three bonus locations that are some of our favorite spots outside the show. To find them, check this newsletter or our Web site each day for the GPS coordinates and set off. We are using virtual caches for our mini hunt. When you find what we drive you toward, take a picture in front of it and e-mail it to us. There will be a daily prizes for one

lucky geocacher and a nice prize for one who finds all eight spots. I hope that you meet a few new friends along the way and that you see some of the hidden treasures in Ft. Lauderdale. I have two favorite spots that you probably drive by every day. One is an old tree and the other is a bronze statue that is almost never appreciated. So load up the GPS and grab your phone or camera. The first geocache is at 26º06’783, 80º06’511. This item is not where it should be. But it’s fictional anyway so who’s to say where it should be. Lots of adventure happened here and you can read about it in any used book store. See you on the trail. David Reed is publisher of The Triton. Send us your photo to editorial@thetriton.com. Brothers keep it real onboard By Tom Serio At first glance, brothers Brad and Derek Treliving are regular yacht crew, having worked through the ranks. Digging deeper, it’s learned that they are both captains, and have spent time on the seas working with each other. You would think there would be some sibling rivalry, but these guys work well together, despite the occasional ribbings. Instinctively, they usually know what the other is going to ask when under way, each having had command of several yachts in the past. And they both happened to fall into the
yachting business. Younger Brad got started doing East Coast deliveries in 1983, Having run an 83foot and 68-foot Sea Ray, and 61-foot and 74foot Vikings for his boss since 1992, he is now stepping up to a brand new Pacific Mariner 85. Derek, five years Brad’s senior, was introduced to the cruising scene helping Brad on deliveries. A former mechanic in Chicago, Derek moved to Florida in 1985. He has cruised the Caribbean as engineer on M/Y Adler and M/Y Longitude Zero. Read more about the Treliving brothers at www.the-triton.com.
Groups feast on alphabet soup By Dorie Cox Acronyms seem to be on every other logo at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show. Take for example ISS, HISWA, MIASF, SYBAss, USSA and UFO (well, you get the idea). Why do yachts need so many organizations touting support for the industry? The International Superyacht Society addressed the reason for the alphabet soup of groups at its annual membership meeting yesterday at
Bahia Mar. The participants included members and companies dedicated to raising the standards of all aspects of the large yacht industry and the topic of their alliances was covered by a representative of each of the groups. All of the speakers explained with specific case studies how their goals are better accomplished with cooperation from other groups. There’s a lot more to this story on www.the-triton.com.
Debuts abound around FLIBS A few debuts at the show: M/Y At Last, launched earlier this year, cruised the Bahamas with the owners and is making its public debut at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina (across from Pier 66). The 145-foot Heesen is the former Artful Dodger and Lady Joy. Refit at Derecktors in South Florida over the past two years, At Last has a new profile thanks to a reconstruction of the wheelhouse, raising the roof and installing vertical windows. Kentucky-based Boundless Yachts has launched its first offshore vessel, the Boundless 90. Built by Custom Steel Boats of North Carolina (Slip G-709 at Bahia Mar), the aluminum-hulled yacht
has triple HamiltonJet waterjets and a draft of just 2.5 feet. It has a cruising speed of 20 knots, and top speed of 25.5 knots. Preliminary drawings for a Boundless 120 are under way. Washington-based Citadel Yachts, a subsidiary of Aleutian Yachts, has launched a 92-foot tri-deck expedition yacht, M/Y Miss Lisa. The steel-hulled vessel (Slip G-711 at Bahia Mar) has a beam of 24-feet, 8-inches, a fullwidth on-deck master, three double staterooms and two double crew cabins. The global launch of the 92-foot Gulfstream from Argos Yachts (Bahia Mar, north side, slip FG-29). She is built at Tricon Marine in China with a hybrid hull of fiberglass and foam core.

DOCKMASTER SPOTLIGHT: Show Management
Arranging yachts, fruit is similar By Dorie Cox When Dane Graziano was young, he organized fruits and vegetables. Now, he arranges hundreds of yachts and vendors for the largest boat show in the world. From rotating produce to moving megayachts, Graziano is now senior vice president and chief operating officer of Show Management, which produces the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show. “I don’t know how I learned the art of organizing, I just could do it,” he said. He tears around set-up at Bahia Mar Yachting Center in his golf cart. Taking short cuts behind piles of docking and veering through crates, Graziano drives
like, well, like he’s done it for 25 years. Graziano grew up in Miami Beach and moved to New York for college where he studied the science and economics of crops and farms. “I was young and thought I would feed the world,” he said. Through friends, he met Kaye Pearson, founder of Show Management. “It was in the same door in the same office I work in now, that I walked into 25 years ago,” he said. “Kaye took risks that people today are scared to take.” Graziano reminisced about the first few years Show Management produced the show in the mid 1970s, just Pearson, Pearson’s then-girlfriend and later wife, Pearson’s father, Andrew Doole, Graziano and two other employees. To find out more about Graziano’s history and how he wound up at the boat show, read the whole story at www.the-triton.com.
