Golf’s greatest talks yachts By Jim Bronstien
When you attend a lunch to hear from the greatest golf legend of all time, you would think you would hear stories about golf. But not this week. As part of the boat show festivities, about 120 community, business, and industry leaders were honored with some tales from Jack Nicklaus and his son Gary — not tales about golf, but tales about their love of boating and philanthropy. Jack is a first-class yacht owner who also happens to call northern Palm Beach County his home. So it was very fitting to hear him and his son speak of their experiences in boating. Jack and his family are frequent visitors to the Bahamas and many other cruising grounds. They are avid boaters. They
are avid conservationists. They are avid fishermen. And they have a passion for philanthropy. Jack spoke fondly of his move from Ohio to South Florida in the 1960s. Back then the move was prompted not just by the fact that golf was available year-round, but because Jack also quickly discovered that the Palm Beach area’s proximity to Gulf Stream waters generates an abundance of fish. Fishing and golfing became his passions for decades. Jack and Gary reminisced of the many boats their family has had over the years, most with the name Sea Bear etched on the transoms.
