The Muny

Dear Sean,

With a 106-year history, The Muny is synonymous with summer in St. Louis, bringing together St. Louisans to enjoy the magic of live outdoor theater. Our team recognizes the importance of this place within the St. Louis community. We are honored to have been invited to submit our qualifications for this project that will enhance the customer experience for this revered cultural tradition.

Trivers has a proven history of working with historic structures and spaces, many of which are the City’s most revered cultural icons requiring a new intervention to solve modern day needs. We look to carefully balance historic context with contemporary aesthetic, creating an architectural dialogue that is enriched by this duality. We understand the complexities and innate opportunities of existing structures, the technical aspects of pragmatic needs, and how design can enhance the user experience.

Many of our most successful projects are partnerships and collaborations with top tier specialty firms and is why we sought out Schuler Shook as THE team to best help meet the Muny’s goals. This is an example of our approach, to find the best team for our client which balances Trivers’ historic, non-profit, cultural and technical experience with Schuler Shook’s unique, unmatched specialty of outdoor theater design.

Our team is focused on creating great places that support great experiences. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with you, The Muny, your board, and other stakeholders who consider The Muny a treasure of the city.

Sincerely,

gateway arch museum

Trivers worked as a partner for Cooper, Robertson & Partners and James Carpenter Design Associates for the expanded and renovated Museum of Westward Expansion below the internationally-recognized St. Louis Arch. As part of the competition-winning Michael Van Valkenburgh master plan, the museum expanded the existing underground museum to the west, creating a new western entry into the Arch Grounds and the museum.

Trivers’ involvement in the coordination with the National Park Service to maintain the integrity of a National Landmark was imperative in executing a project that is historically sensitive yet modern in function and form. Trivers worked with our design partners to solve the constructibility issues that were presented in creating a subterranean structure that needed to address high levels of security affording a structure with National Landmark Status yet remain open and accessible to the public.

The project established a new entrance adjacent to Luther Ely Smith Park, the Old Courthouse, and the heart of St. Louis’ downtown.

As a key component of the Gateway Arch Park Foundationlead national monument museum renovation, the new Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Museum Store captivates visitors with its vastness and light. Its design ties seamlessly into the Arch Lobby--modern, yet approachable, a space worthy of representing the St. Louis Arch. The quality of the space and clear-span expanse disguises the store’s subterranean setting. The store’s central location and advanced construction schedule relative to the larger museum project proved to be a complex task. Trivers guided the design and construction of the retail white-box through the many multifaceted coordination concerns innate to an infill project within a still continuously operating national monument and visitor center. Unknown to many is the complexity of what lies beneath. The design team took what originally had been an IMAX theatre and inserted three new programmatic levels of storage, employee offices, and the museum store itself.

Trivers partnered with Cooper Robertson on the store infill and white-box and in conjunction with Anderson Hallas, overseeing the construction and fit out of the 4,000 SF space.

rady shell at jacobs park

Rady Shell is the centerpiece of a newly-upgraded public park in San Diego surrounded by sea water on three sides. The summer home for San Diego Symphony was designed with community input to support a number of performance types. Audience capacities and setups are able to vary widely, from intimate two- and four-person table seating arrangements to standing crowds of up to 10,000.

Addressing the location’s sea air meant everything was specified with the aim of maximizing corrosion resistance. The rigging machinery has specially built rope drums, and all the lines are fiber rope. The stage lighting system receptacles are outdoor rated in locations where they are open to the elements.

The structural design of the shell - with no flat or parallel surfaces - provided another challenge. The integration of technical systems, rigging points, catwalks, and lighting positions into a unique tensile fabric structure required detailed coordination.

Schuler Shook provided theatre consulting services including theatre planning, infrastructure planning, seating layout, design and specification of stage rigging, stage lighting, access to technical systems, and cable infrastructure.

missouri state capitol

329,000 SF

The State of Missouri engaged Trivers to provide a Master Plan for the renewal of the State Capitol Building in Jefferson City. The building features an extensive collection of stonework, frescos, bronze statuary, and other artwork. Many of the interior features have been painstakingly maintained and remain a source of pride. On the contrary, initial investigations revealed that the exterior stonework, while equally as impressive, has succumbed to decades of weathering and inherent material weaknesses. The result is moderate to severe degradation of character defining features, risk of catastrophic stone failure.

Subsequent to the Master Planning effort, Trivers was hired by the State to further evaluate existing building envelope conditions from the base of building to top of dome, the terrace pavers and balustrades, and all components of the monument plaza. Trivers is working with their consultants to thoughtfully evaluate existing conditions, provide specific repair details, qualify possible stone material selections, and navigate a multi-year project schedule ensuring quality renovation that will ensure the next 100 years of the building’s service.

millennium park jay pritzker pavilion

Schuler Shook provided theatre planning and lighting design services for this 11,000-seat outdoor pavilion in Millennium Park. The centerpiece of the popular new park, Jay Pritzker Pavilion was designed by architect Frank Gehry as a new permanent home for the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus.

The Pavilion includes a large stage, a sloped area with 4,000 fixed seats that remain outdoors through Chicago’s weather, and the Great Lawn, which provides space for 7,000 additional attendees. The backstage loading area abuts the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, and our work on the Harris helped inform decisions for the Pritzker Pavilion. Around and above the stage are sculptural stainless steel “ribbons” that rise high into the air.

Above the seating and the Great Lawn is a unique trellis of steel tubing that supports the pavilion’s sophisticated sound system.

Gehry Partners also designed a pedestrian bridge nearby that serves, among other things, as a sound buffer against the busy street noise.

Schuler Shook participated in the master planning of the entire park as well as the pavilion in the late 1990’s. Then, working closely with the city, the architect and acoustician, Schuler Shook planned and designed the seating, lighting and rigging systems for the pavilion.

Schuler Shook’s lighting also illuminates Gehry’s steel panels that frame the proscenium, giving the pavilion and the park added life after dark, an important component for the park requested by the City of Chicago.

central visual & performing arts high school

40,350 SF

The St. Louis Public School System envisioned a goal to provide a “State-of-the-Art” Performing Arts High School Theater. The newly renovated 800-seat auditorium is used by students and faculty, as well as being available for use by the public. The auditorium was brought into compliance with current building code requirements. These corrections also improved the sight lines.

The renovation included the latest in sound equipment and acoustical upgrades. Light and sound vestibules were added for increased control. A catwalk system and spot-light balcony platforms will be installed for the management of the new theater lights. The existing stage was modified to increase the side wings and depth. New seating and finishes completed the auditorium renovation. Green rooms, dressing rooms and scenery shop were non-existent or inadequate in size and location. The renovation addressed these inadequacies.

Additionally, the St. Louis Public School embarked on the creation of a full-service kitchen at Central Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA). The kitchen serves the students enrolled at Central VPA, and adjacent Cleveland ROTC. Amenities provided include areas for receiving bulk food products, dry storage, cool storage, freezer storage, preparation, cooking and baking. The serving lines were modified to improve on the efficiency of distribution and visual branding of the fares offered at the Central and Performing Arts High School.

devon lakeshore amphitheater

The new-construction outdoor amphitheater in Nelson Park is part of the Decatur, Illinois, Park District’s long-term plans for development of the town’s lakeshore. Designed to host touring music and theatre productions as well as a “Movies in the Park” series, the outdoor theatre boasts fixed seats for 360 people and standing room for 300. Stage doors open to allow a view of the stage from boats on nearby Lake Decatur.

04 CONSULTANT ROLES

We would anticipate the following disciplines for this project:

MEP Engineering (incidental)

Civil Engineering

Building Enclosure/Envelope Consultant

05 COMPENSATION

This concept phase will help outline the trajectory of the project. Once we get an understanding from you of what exactly we’re endeavoring to do, we will provide a scope of work, a timeline, and associated fee for that work. There may be further conversation to ensure the fee reflects the comprehensive scope needs of the Muny while also omitting other items perhaps assumed but not warranted. With a clear scope, fee, and associated timeline, both parties are clear when something goes beyond the scope of the agreement.

Billing at hourly rates is another avenue, however we feel that a fixed fee keeps the process moving for both us internally and our clients while being transparent and clear regarding scope. We want to be your advisor, your creative collaborator to make the best project possible without the fear of you being charged hourly rates at every turn.

We’re here to help you realize this exciting next step for the Muny.

“Trivers, our illustrative architects, never have we felt so heard. They listened to our team to understand our needs and the type of environment that we wanted to create here and they simply knocked it out of the park. We love our new home and we hope our clients will too.”

“Every day, as I witness the experience our visitors are having, as well as what they walk away with in terms of new knowledge about the river and its wildlife, I am deeply grateful for the incredible design elements of our building. The building practically pours our visitors into the landscape, and that has served our goals of education and conservation of these beautiful, special places”.

“As the Park undergoes a transformation in future years as prescribed in our recently completed Master Plan, we chose to retain the services of Trivers to help guide the Park through upcoming historic preservation and new building projects. This selection is a testament not only to their technical expertise and project management but also their dedication to being readily available to us as clients”.

“The Trivers team has been involved in various phases of the CityArchRiver project including schematic design, design development, construction documents and construction administration on both renovation work and new construction. They have excelled at each phase of multiple projects because of their ability to work with multiple stakeholders, maintain clear communication both in verbal and graphic presentations to effectively convey ideas, and are responsive to issues as they arise and address them in a timely manner”.

“Without a doubt, the folks at Trivers knocked our dream project out of the park. Over the past 18 years of construction projects at Lift for Life Academy, the new elementary school we are opening in August is by far the best designed project. The planning process, collective gathering of stakeholders’ visions, and attention to detail with construction documents has been instrumental in having a safe and enriching educational space”.
