An oasis set amongst the jewel of the East Devon coast which is Sidmouth. The 'Harbour' provides chic and luxurious accommodation with beautiful views and excellent amenities. The recent investment by the Harbour Hotels group into what was formerly the Westcli Hotel has brought a much needed injection, bringing the hotel bang up-to-date with not just a total rebuild of the hotel, but increased room capacity. To say they've made a great job
of the rebuild would be an understatement, it's now a chic, modern, luxurious and spacious hotel with superb facilities including indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a spa / gymnasium and sophisticated lounge and dining areas that are elevated to allow glorious views of the

bay. What's equally great if you're visiting Sidmouth, is the position of the hotel which is directly opposite Connaught Gardens and Jacobs Ladder, meaning that your walks straight out of the hotel are superb. It's vitally important on many levels that the hotels within Devon come up to a high standard, that way visitors will be more tempted to return if they've had a great experience. What's equally important is that we have enough hotel capacity to cater
Indian spiced stone bass, sticky rice, Sri Lankan shellfish curry
for those looking to stay in Devon, so it has been great to see how this hotel's been transformed beyond all recognition to provide ďŹ rst class accommodation for visitors. On arrival at the hotel, you can't help but be impressed by the spacious and modern reception area, and walking through to the combined lounge/bar/dining area you're treated to what I consider to be one of the most elegant dining spaces in Devon in which to relax (see above).

Dining at the Harbour's Upper Deck Bar & Restaurant is a most pleasurable experience having great ambiance, panoramic views and excellent food, complemented with a comprehensive selection of wines. The menu provided a good range of dishes prepared from carefully chosen local produce and incorporating plenty of fish based options, which is what you'd wish to see considering the hotel's coastal aspect. All fish options tasted (see photos at bottom) were excellent, as indeed were all the dishes sampled from the restaurant. The bedroom provided was well-appointed, and because of the Hotel's very recent redevelopment, everything within the room was newly commissioned. In terms of visiting Sidmouth, it's important to tell you that if you've briefly driven round Sidmouth in the past, you've probably missed much of what the town has to offer and to rectify this we've included a feature on Sidmouth complete with a map of the town (overleaf ), so you don't miss the best bits. If you're visiting from another part of Devon, or even from further afield, you will not be disappointed with your stay at the Sidmouth Harbour Hotel, it provides an excellent package of luxurious accommodation, dining and leisure facilities, also having great amenity from which you can enjoy Sidmouth. Top marks to the team at the Sidmouth Harbour, it's highly commended. Editor

Sidmouth has so much to offer the visitor, it's worth spending the time pre-visit, working-out where everything is located. There really is so much to do and see at Sidmouth, you're spoilt for choice, whether you're a day visitor from another part of Devon (it's a big county!), or from further afield. It's said that the visitor trend these days is shifting towards shorter, but more frequent visits, which is particularly easy for Devon residents looking to explore their county. When the weather's fine, is there anywhere better, particularly when you consider all the hassle, cost and danger

Connaught Gardens and Jacob's Ladder At the western end of Sidmouth, just a short walk over the road from Sidmouth Harbour Hotel, sits Connaught Gardens and Jacob's Ladder. 1. The white steps of Jacob's Ladder up to Connaught Gardens and the Clock Tower Cafe, which was previously a lime kiln. At low tide the beach is sandy and there are great rock pools skirting the cliffs, ideal for the family to explore and paddle. 2. The cliff top path in Connaught Gardens looking eastwards towards the town - the views are splendid on a fine day.

You know when you've read a truly gorgeous book when it leaves a warm glow of happiness inside you. 'Me and Mister P' by Maria Farrer with illustrations by Daniel Rieley does just that. All Arthur wants is a normal family but no, he's ended up with the brother from Weirdsville. Liam is so embarrassing, but Mum and Dad can't see that and give him all the attention. Leaving Arthur with zero! Zilch! A big fat NOTHING! At the end of his tether Arthur can't see any solutions to his problems and thinks the only way out is to run away. But when he finds an enormous, funny polar bear standing on his door step he finds that life is about to change for the better in the strangest of ways. Prepare to meet MISTER P because there are times when only a polar bear will do. This book is warm and funny in equal spades. Maria captures perfectly the frustration felt by Arthur towards his brother who
is different and struggles to fit into a world filled with strange places, loud noises and crowds. Review by Jo Clarke, Librarian.

The White & Son team
And while in Sidmouth
fa b sh oe sh oppin g!
Sidmouth can be considered the jewel in the East Devon crown, with a unique mixture of independent shops and a wide selection of cafes and restaurants. Sidmouth has become a destination town for a short break or a day trip with shopping and lunch.
Following their display area and shop expansion last year, White and Son Shoes in Fore Street have this year increased the range of ladies and mens shoes. Wide fitting, casual or comfort, waterproof or dressy, this is a shoe shop that has it all. In the 1880s the great grandfather of Steve White, the owner of White & Son Shoes in Sidmouth, opened the family shoe shop in Dorchester. Four generations later the family owned shoe shop continues to bring a lifetime of experience and knowledge to its shop in Fore Street, Sidmouth. Steve White and his late wife Gail purchased the former Ivor Coram shoe shop in 2011, increasing both the range and
choice of quality footwear brands available in Sidmouth. Following a major shop refit and expansion in 2016 the shop probably offers the widest selection of quality footwear in Devon. Every season the White & Son team visit the major footwear exhibitions, personally seeking out new brands and styles. Listening to customer wants and wishes during the preceding season helps the team to choose from such a huge range of styles and brands. The choice of familiar and class leading brands on display in the revamped shop will exceed your wildest dreams. Customers are amazed at the wide and comprehensive choice of

Following a large number of customer requests, White & Son Shoes are pleased to announce the return of the instantly recognisable ECCO brand to Sidmouth. With an enviable reputation for quality and styling, soft leathers and leading edge footwear technology, ECCO are a welcome addition to the vast range in the shop. Founded in 1963, ECCO has come a long way over the past 50 years - from a small shoe factory in Bredebro, Denmark with just a few employees, to a modern, global shoe enterprise
with 19,500 employees and sales of over 20 million pairs per year across 87 countries. Something for everyone, both womenʼs and menʼs styles, be it sandals, a sporty trainer style or one of ECCOʼs classic range, why not treat your feet to an ECCO experience.
featuring the GOGA Max high rebound insole and GOGA Pillars for every step. It is easy to see why Skechers have won so many prestigious awards for this well known and respected brand.
The award winning Skechers brand continues to be enjoyed by those customers who appreciate its light weight, unbelievable comfort available in a range of styles and colours. With a choice of over 70 different styles and colours in stock, White & Son Shoes is the independent shoe shop that can satisfy your Skecher desires.
If you are a customer looking for footwear with great arch support, have flat feet or collapsed arches or maybe wearing orthotics, the internationally renowned Vionic Shoes could be just what you have been looking for. How many times have you had to reject flip flops or sandals because they lack the benefits you require? The new Vionic range available at White and Son Shoes could well be the answer to your footwear problems.
Go Walk 4 is an all new addition to the Skechers range, available in over 10 different colours;
