ichael Morgan, a man of great personal charm, was fortunate enough to have enjoyed two distinguished careers firstly in academe and latterly as an artist whose ground breaking style is widely considered to have added new life to the watercolour medium and subsequently influenced and guided many young artists. His family recall his frequent refrain “when I retire I’m going to paint!!!” Michael trained as a teacher. He had a varied and outstanding teaching career, headmaster in his twenties at Dartington Primary, lecturing appointments at colleges in Chichester and Bognor Regis and his appointment as Principal of the Froebel Institute in Roehampton where he remained until retirement in 1985.

A number of colleges internationally appointed him as a Trustee notably as Founding Trustee at Richmond, the American University in London and Trustee Emeritus of New England College in New Hampshire, New England.

From childhood Michael always loved painting, and he fulfilled his family promise to become an artist after 1985. A prime source of inspiration was the works of the late John Blockley RI, a noted Cotswold based artist who with his painting partner Moira Huntly, organised painting weeks in remote upland areas like Snowdonia. These brooding locations inspired Michael with his recurring themes of isolation and escapism which were to form such core ingredients in his paintings.

The final result, however was work that drew in the viewer, set the imagination to work, and demanded detailed inspection. In 1997 he selected Marine House at Beer as his gallery close to his home near Axminster. Solo shows every eighteen months proved sell outs. Recognition followed his innovative approach. In 1998 he won the medal for the most outstanding submission by a nonmember at the Spring Exhibition of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours shortly to be followed by his selection as a member of the RI Putting his academic, artistic and administrative skills into focus, he was appointed in 2000 as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and founding academician of the newly formed Exeter based South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts (SWAc) which has become a beacon for artists in the South West. He was president of The Honiton Art Society and his active involvement in fund raising and encouragement for students in local schools and colleges led to the naming of the arts building at his local community college in Axminster after him. Michael Morgan leaves a legacy which can only endure. He produced moving new interpretations of lonely and beautiful places which imbue a sense of escapism which surely strikes a chord with many in our fast moving and pressured world.

Yes, we have no bananas THE PERENNIAL DEBATE – from which end should one peel one’s banana? - looks like remaining unresolved, at least as far as Devon is concerned, following the announcement by Paignton Zoo that it is no longer feeding bananas to its primates. Today’s commercial bananas are much more sugary than those eaten in the wild, animal nutritionists at the zoo point out and have likened giving bananas to the primates to humans eating too much cake and chocolate. Fair enough, but isn’t there anybody there who can remember the bad old days, we asked the zoo, and settle the “which end is the best end for opening a banana?” argument which has been raging in Devon, as elsewhere perhaps, for generations.

How many women does it take to man Devon’s lifeboats? EXMOUTH takes delivery of a remarkable new all-weather Shannon class lifeboat this summer. Instead of propellers it is powered by water-jets so that it can be launched and recovered from a beach at any state of the tide, if needs be. Not that Exmouth is any stranger to a beachlaunched lifeboat – in fact they started saving lives back in 1803 with an eight-oared open boat rowed by local fisherman, a full 22 years before the National Lifeboat Institution (as it was then called) was formed. No one knows for sure when women first manned the lifeboats in Devon, but it was as early as 1838 that the immortal Grace Darling, 23, and her lighthouse-keeper father famously rescued the passengers and crew of the paddle steamer Forfarshire because it was too rough for a lifeboat to be launched from the beach.
In Devon today there are now 30 women on the ‘wet side’ of the RNLI following in Miss Darling’s footsteps – and 248 men, all ready at the firing of a maroon, to man Devon’s eight lifeboats out of Exmouth, Torbay, Dart, Salcombe, Plymouth, Clovelly, Appledore and Ilfracombe. The RNLI web site tells you how you can join this noble breed as a volunteer crew member.
The zoo’s Phil Knowling told Coast & Country that they had no chimps at the zoo: “We have gorillas and orangutans here. Our curator of mammals suggests that they eat them without peeling and from the non-stalk end.” “Orangutans bite them mid-way, breaking the skin and then pulling the banana into their mouths sideways, bending it in two as it goes. Then they eat the skin. It’s likely that it varies from individual to individual. As in, how do you eat your Crème Egg?”

Well-known presenter, broadcaster and dyed-in-the-wool Devonian Judi Spiers gives COAST & COUNTRY readers a glimpse into the lives of the great and good.
Alan Davies Touring is something I could not bear. Years working away from home and twelve weeks in panto in Birmingham nearly finished me off! I like my own bed, my cat... and of course my husband and donʼt read anything into that order! But to some people itʼs a way of life and a necessity if they want to connect with their fans.
After a 12 year gap from performing, Alan Davies, who is father of two, came to Devon at the end of last year with his tour ‘Life is a Pain’. The fifth and newest series Jonathan Creek has recently aired on the BBC.

Take Alan Davies, back on our screens after 17 years as televisionʼs magician turned detective, Jonathan Creek, and when I spoke to him on his way to Devon with his fi rst stand up tour after a hiatus of 12 years, ʻLife is a painʼ.
“The penny didn’t drop till series three. Stephen Fry is calling me an idiot again!”
Alan is a father nowadays so naturally I thought going back on the road must be exhausting, but not at all.
“I loved that world weary wisdom from a six year old!”
“It’s that or a 17-hour day looking after toddlers, which is much more difficult! Stand-up is a doddle comparatively. You go around the country making people laugh. It’s a really nice thing to do.” So how come the title of the show? He explained it was actually a story told to him by a friend about a little girl who was being told off by her mother. The little girl stopped looked at her mother and said “Life is pain!”
Alan would probably hate me for saying it... but he is a really ʻniceʼ man with a warmth that a lot of his contemporaries donʼt have. His off stage conversation is as you might expect, funny and his observation is sharp, so how on earth does he fi nd being treated by Stephen Fry as the resident dunce on QI?

“I retain nothing!” Alan is now going back on the road with an entirely new show entitled ʻLittle Victories.ʼ
“It comes from a routine about me trying to get my dad to eat blackcurrant jam. He has a limited palate. He also thinks that Indian food would make him ill. It would drive us mad as

children - it’s almost pathological. He has just decided that he doesn’t like certain things. We had plenty of jam at home strawberry, raspberry, apricot - it was jam a-go-go. But he would refuse to eat jam made of blackcurrant, the finest of all the currants. So we set him a trap… that’s one of the routines in the show. It’s a classic Little Victory.”
Seth Lakeman Devonʼs Seth Lakeman, like Alan, is now a father and with twins born last year admits:
“It’s been quite an adjustment.” Nevertheless Seth has been out touring with his latest album ʻWord of Mouth.ʼ He burst onto solo scene in 2002, all chiselled good looks, foot stopping and violin thrashing, that probably had Stradivarius spinning in his grave, winning over a younger audience. Just two years later his second album ʻKitty Jayʼ, recorded in his kitchen for £300, was nominated for a Mercury award and in 2007 he won Folk Singer of the Year in the Radio 2 Folk awards. This year, The Full English, his band with musician archivists Martin Simpson, Fay Yield and others, won best group and best album. Sethʼs latest album ʻWord of Mouthʼ encapsulates everything he loves
After winning the Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2007 and nominated for a Mercury award in 2004, Seth’s latest album ‘Word of Mouth’ is full of stories from West Country people.

about the West country, its places, traditions, its ʻfolk.ʼ True to the troubadours of yore, he travelled the length and breadth of the west talking to people, hearing their stories and putting them to music. The result is twelve songs but also extracts of the interviews that influenced them like Reg Hannaford the last living witness to Operation Tiger, the World War training exercise that went disastrously wrong on Devonʼs Slapton. ʻThe Saddest Crowdʼ comes from a plaque on Plymouth Harbour marking the arrival of surviving members of The Titanic who arrived there on the rescue craft SS Lapland.
“The tours are very long - non-stop. I tend to do 4 days of gigging and one day off, which quite often is a day of travelling or a day of interviewing.” Simple question - why not cut touring down?
“Because that’s actually what I like. I actually don’t like days off when I’m touring because it interrupts the flow of how the show is going. When you are doing show after show, you get into a really nice rhythm - so that’s my fault.” Well Alan and Seth might still be enjoying touring, but Joan Armatrading has said that although she will never retire, her next tour, which brings her to Exeter Corn Exchange in November, will be the last major tour she will undertake. It will be with Joan solo on stage playing the guitar and piano as well as singing.
So all or nothing?

Then thereʼs Derek Banks, old friend, Dartmoor expert and artist who talks about the drama and magic of the landscape and influenced the fi rst single from the album ʻThe Courier.ʼ Itʼs a great album and Seth is an extraordinary performer - try get to see him if you can. Heʼs already performed in Exeter Cathedral but will be back in Devon at Plymouth Theatre Royal 25th October.

Well she has certainly given me some unique memories over the years, one being when she was on a nationwide hunt to fi nd regional singer songwriters to open for her on her 2012 UK and Ireland tour. Our local ʻfi ndʼ by the way was the wonderful Ellie Williams from Exeter.
Joan sat opposite me in the studio and sang “Love and Affection.” It was all the more memorable because she had a cold, she was having trouble tuning up and giggling because she thought she might forget the words... she didnʼt she nailed it. Not so lucky at the Cambridge Folk Festival she admitted.
“I was headlining the festival and forgot the words to “Me Myself I” so I turned to the keyboard player and he was singing them, so I picked up on them but as soon as I turned back, I forgot them again!” So if you get the chance to see her and are in the front few rows, make sure you know all the words... just in case she needs a reminder!

t is said, ‘Cometh the hour, cometh the ’. Clive Birch was just such a man.
The story begins at the village hall in Clyst Hydon. It was a quiz night for the locals. Clive stood up and said, ‘we’ve got to do something’. He was referring to the village pub which was under threat of closure. The Five Bells is a fine old 16th century grade II listed thatched Devon Inn. The original landlord had handed the pub over to the bank. The bank, in turn, had put in a series of temporary managers. Now, property developers were sniffing around. This meant a very real possibility of the premises being turned into a private house. Prior to the quiz night, Clive had put together a questionnaire asking for the views of local people. One of the questions was, what does the Five Bells mean to you? The answers to that question were varied and full of emotion: people said, they had their first kiss there; they had announced their engagement there; this was where, as teenagers, they had their first drink; this is where their late parents used to drink. The feedback started to flood in that very night as the questionnaires were filled out. The questionnaire was then put on the internet along with a general campaign to save the pub. Clive’s wife, along with the villagers became very active in the venture and helped to spread the word. Clive ran an email campaign and put it on Facebook. The Clyst Hydon News was used to complete the coverage and make sure everyone in the area knew about it. The next thing Clive did was to put together a committee of about eight people. My first visit to The Five Bells was some 23 years ago, so it was with great interest that we re-visited this pub, which has been subject to major refurbishment and much investment along with new management (see the Pub Rescue story in this issue). Upon walking through the door, it was great to see this pub restored as a thriving centre to the community, having a great buzz and cheerful interior. Pan fried scallops were first on the menu, these were cooked to perfection and the subtlety of flavour and delicacy was exquisite - top marks. Grilled Goats Cheese - a restaurant standard, but with the addition of

piquant sliced horseradish and beetroot really elevated this dish, again top marks. 10oz South Devon rump steak with beef dripping chips - again, another menu stalwart which gratefully didn't disappoint, succulent steak and fantastic chips - almost bringing a new dimension to this humble potato item. The Fillet of Red Mullet was beautifully cooked and alongside fennel, carrot, orange and chicory salad, presented a flavoursome, satisfying and light main. After having starters and mains, there was only room for a single pudding unfortunately, so we opted for the Dark Chocolate Mouse with coffee and cardamom which as a pudding

fan, totally hit the spot. Fatty, sugary puddings are a pet hate - delicate flavours don't see the light of day. Thankfully, this pudding was deep, interesting, particularly the iced coffee parfait. The mousse was 70% chocolate and was infused with cardamom as was the biscotti. The Bourgogne Blanc was sublime, expensive but worthy, being toasty, mineral, with buttery fruitiness. All in all a great dining experience, not a single glitch in any of the courses a really admirable performance - not surprising as Chef Ian was previously at Gidleigh Park! - we really do have top notch eateries in East Devon - Editor.

Blu e bells: In folklore, they’re known as ‘Fairy F lowers', and believed to be used to trap small children. It was also believed that if you wore a wreath of bluebells, you could be made to tell the truth. They’re poisonous, being very dangerous to sheep and cattle grazing on them. Bluebells produce a sticky substance that was once used to stick the pages in books and feathers onto arrows. They’re an important early food flower for bees, hoverflies and butterflies.
Wild Ga rlic (Ra nsoms): Stellar, pure white flowers that are stunning when you get up close. The leaves can be eaten raw or cooked and the garlic taste isn’t anywhere near as strong as the smell suggests. Apparently they’re good in stir frys and omelettes. It was grown in several parts of every farm once to prevent disease in cattle, although the flavour could make its way into the milk. Imagine, garlic flavoured milk - haven’t seen that in the shops!
Jewels of Spring What weʼve got to look forward to over the next couple of months
Spring is truly an elemental time of the year, you can fully understand why the Green Man was an important part of pagan belief, the sheer abundance and vigour of nature has to be seen to be belived. Of course, living here makes it easy for us to enjoy our lovely corner of Devon, when the sun finally makes its welcome appearance. There are certain weeks where the vibrance of golds, bronzes and greens is staggering and you can almost feel the sap surging up through trees and hedges. Last year, with camera in hand, I ventured out across our wonderful region to take some close-up shots, because it really is fascinating getting close to wild flowers to explore the detail and symetry. For camera buffs, Iʼve used a Nikon D7000, a Tamron 90mm macro lens and just natural lighting. 32

Devon Violet: Often seen nestling on the bank alongside primroses, this sweet scented flower can be seen as early as February. It was thought to protect you from anything evil and was often strewn around the house in mediaeval times for protection. In the 1930s, a ‘Violet Train’ used to run from Dawlish up to Covent Garden. Apparently 200 acres of violets were grown at Dawlish where it was once a big local industry.
Lady’s Smock (Cu ckoo F lower): Quite a leggy plant, often seen in meadows alongside the taller varieties of buttercups. Said to bloom when the Cuckoo arrives, from April till June. It’s a member of the Brassicaceae fa mily and native throughout Europe. Once very common, it’s now under threat - as ever, habitat loss is the major problem. It provides food for the Orange Tip butterfly and was once used as a substitute to watercress. Said to be unlucky if brought into the house and not included in May Day garlands.

BAY OF PIGS by FCR ESGEN I suppose it was when a pack of wild boar came down from Dartmoor and ravaged Tavistock on market day a few of years ago that this ancestor of the pig family began to be taken seriously. By the time the police got there, the boar had hoofed it out of town, leaving behind them turned over market stalls, half eaten cheese tasters, and an astonished populace that could hardly believe this type of wild
west behaviour could occur in our high speed broadband age. Not since before the enclosures have there been wild boar in Britain. Back then the peasantry viewed them no more than a gigantic buffet on legs and hunted them into extinction. Now escapees from boar farms have re- colonised vast tracts of England and Wales. But really, who can blame the peasants. If you
have been fortunate enough to dive into a joint of roast boar with morello cherry sauce you will understand why most of them used to end up on a spit. The taste is rather like free range pork with strong gamey overtones. My own encounters with these creatures is rather more close to home; in the woods over the road actually. Unbeknownst to most of the populace living in my road, there lives in these woods an old man called Jock, who
survives on a diet of rabbits and pigeons and whatever else his lurcher dog can find. He and a friend were out the other day doing a spot of wood combing when they were challenged by a boar or as Jock calls them, a wild pig. The boar charged them and with great presence of mind, Jock banged it over the head with his stick. All that is left now is a few bones as a reminder of the biggest feast two people have ever enjoyed. © 2013

Interview: Naomi Cleaver by Amanda Merchant
Naomi Cleaver has been a familiar face on our screens for many years now. We have seen her presenting programmes such as Grand Design`s; Trade Secrets (Ch4 ), Other People`s Houses (Ch4), Britain`s Best Home (Ch4), Honey I Ruined The House (Ch4) and The World`s Greatest Dishes (Sky 1). I had the wonderful opportunity of meeting Naomi to talk about her love for the South West and her fantastic Master Classes in design, which have taken the country by storm. “Aside from your broadcasting, you also run an extremely successful Interior Design company, you`ve published your first book, “The Joy of Home” and have even launched a nationwide series of one day design courses. What gave you the idea of setting up these courses?”
“Making the kind of TV shows I have made is a variation on teaching really. People began to ask me if I ran design courses and as I really like working one on one with people and believe that we are all designers it all seemed to make sense. The courses are a great way to help people develop confidence in their own ideas for their homes, give an insight into what the process of interior design is really all about and how to avoid expensive mistakes.” “After leaving your life in London behind, you enjoyed a brief sabbatical in your holiday home on the Caribbean Island of Nevis. It was here that you wrote your first book “The Joy of Home”. Can we expect to see another book on our shelves written by you in the near future?”
“Hopefully. I’m working on two book projects at the moment but work keeps getting in the way!” “Your return to the UK saw you settle down here in Devon. What made you decide to head to the South West rather than return to your former life in London?”
“After living on a Caribbean island like Nevis you become accustomed to living surrounded by trees and green, by the sound of cockerels in the morning and cattle wandering around, by being close to the sea. My family are from the South West, mostly Wiltshire, where my maternal grandparents were dairy farmers and had a grocery shop in Bradford upon Avon, and Dorset, where my great uncle Charlie was station master of what was then Abbotsbury station, so I feel very at home in the area and absolutely love it. Devon really is heaven!” “Do you find a difference in what you’re Devon clients prefer in terms of design compared to those in London? Do they tend to play it a little safer with colour and pattern design?”
“All of my clients are keen to create imaginative, deeply comfortable spaces and highly value the way good interior design can create really satisfying homes for years to come.” “Going back to your Interior Design courses…These Master Classes seem to be an ideal way of teaching those who either want to redesign their own home or those considering training to be
a professional interior designer. I understand that you studied Three Dimensional Design at Willesdon College and Kingston. Was Interior Design something that always interested you even whilst studying? Or was it a natural progression within your working career?”
“I left home at 17 with no idea of what I wanted to do. One of the jobs I did do though was being an extra in pop videos and I found the art department really interesting. At the same time I was struggling to make tiny, mouldy bedsits habitable and, I guess combined with the fact we moved house as a family about 13 times, I became fascinated by the kind of relationships we can have with space and how we can make space make us feel better.” “Combe House is a fantastic venue to hold your Master Classes. “Without a doubt. Nature features heavily in my work, from colour palettes to materials and even attitude – kindness to nature is at the forefront of all I do – and the palettes and crafts indigenous to Devon are a rich seam of ideas. One of the many ideas on my list is to design a range of furniture using exclusively Devon crafts. One day!” “Do you yourself have a particular style you like to follow within your own home or does it change depending on new trends and ideas?”
“Style is just one aspect of interior design, where form, function and concept should take precedence. Approach the design of your home in this way and you will be liberated from the slavery of style! This is one of the themes my course is all about.”

How many legs has a lamb got? WARNING - IF YOU’RE SQUEAMISH, PLEASE DON’T READ
W
hen Edward arrived home one day after work and announced “That’s it!” My brain went into overdrive and I thought that he was just about to announce that he’d found a better woman than me... no such luck!
He then proceeded to ramble on about taking early retirement, which I just laughed at - but not for long - he was deadly serious. It was the only guaranteed source of income at a time when the farm was, without a doubt, struggling and was only floating because of my wonderful B and B guests and, of course, the said salary. Needless to say, the day arrived when the husband was at home full-time. Not funny, in fact not funny at all. He drove me up the wall immediately, as all my daily routines flew, quite literally, out of the window. Th is was not going to work. He needed a job and fast. So, whilst musing over the farm accounts, which did not make pretty reading, I let out of whoop of joy as I came up with a solution to two problems in one go, talk about killing 2 birds with one stone. First “him” and, secondly, the poor price I was getting for my fi nished lambs. “Edward, given you are a fully-trained old chef, I want you to start butchering lambs for a living as retirement is not healthy for you and defi nitely not for me!” His reply was swift and totally stupid and, of course, unacceptable, “I can’t do that, I haven’t butchered a lamb in years as all my meat at work came in pre-butchered”. “Well, I hope you have got a good memory as I have got six lambs coming back from the abattoir on Friday and I have already got four new customers ready to purchase “superb Jacob lambs prepared by my husband, who is a brilliant butcher”. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
After a few expletives and mumbling and grumbling, agreement was reached, as was an old catering text book reached down from the loft. Firstly, he said that I had to ring the customers and ask them exactly how they would like them butchered. Th is was also a steep learning curve for me too. I soon learnt all the cuts of meat and how they could be butchered and sounded so knowledgeable on the phone when I asked “and how would you like the shoulders done – on the bone or off, in half or whole - and the loin, in chops or boned and rolled which is called a cannon... a rack of lamb or again in chops?”
So with the orders all taken, the day of reckoning arrived. I picked up the lambs and brought them home to our new butchery room where Edward was poised with his new saw, chopper and knife and a very impressive diagram of a lamb showing all the cuts of meat. Thank goodness I had six lambs killed and only four customers as the first one butchered did not look anything like the diagram, but more like a load of off-cuts ready for the dogs. The second one wasn’t a lot better and now I was getting nervous. “Don’t panic, I know exactly what I’m doing, just practising a few different ways of butchering - it’s all coming back to me now!” It didn’t look like it and panic was exactly what I did as I could picture myself apologising to my customers, “Sorry, but all you’ve got is chops and mince!” True to his word, the carcasses did look good when he had fi nished and the lambs were

carefully bagged and labelled. The moment of truth came as I delivered each box to my new customers. All seemed delighted as they opened the box and “Oohhed” and “Aahhed” at how lovely it all looked as I explained what was what. There was only one lady who wasn’t home, but I left it in the hands of her husband. Job done and home to congratulate Edward on his first success as my resident butcher and, defi nitely, “unretired” husband. Later that evening as we were sat having supper - bits of indescribable lamb from the first attempt at butchery - the phone went and it was the lady who I didn’t see. She sounded a bit perturbed. I asked if everything was alright with her lamb and she replied “Well no, not exactly... you see, I unpacked the lamb and was putting it into my freezer when I realised that there was only two legs.” Silence, I waited for her to continue. “You have forgotten to give me the other two legs”. I clearly had a tricky situation on my hands. “Yes, well you see... a lamb only has two legs” “Mrs. East, the lambs that I see out in the fields all have four legs”. I wanted to giggle - s**t - what could I say that wouldn’t make her feel like a complete muppet? Taking a deep breath I said “Yes, you’re quite right, but when they go from walking on four legs to hanging by two, the front legs get called shoulders” “Oh, how stupid of me, thank you so much for making me feel a right fool in front of just you and not the world at large - you learn something every day.” Thank goodness it was only the legs she had a problem with - just imagine if she got confused with her “rack and best end” (of lamb of course!) - JANET EAST

Whatʼs in a Name?
I
ʼm delighted to report that my February article on the early history of Flatbeare resulted in two letters plopping through my letterbox.
Unfortunately my dog Fang got there fi rst but Iʼm sure they were highly complimentary. So by popular demand Iʼve decided to continue the history lesson. For those unlucky ones who failed to catch the last issue as it flew off the shelves, a brief recap follows. The name Flatbeare was a joint Viking / Roman concoction, pronounced as in ʻbareʼ rather than ʻbeerʼ due to the second half being named after hideous Viking Hayrik the Unbearable. The fi rst almost-half was after Flatulencus, the Roman Commanderʼs dog. After enjoying Devon sunshine for a couple of centuries the Vikings were forcibly evicted by the Norman Conquest. Unfortunately their longboat had been hijacked by locals one bonfire night so they had to flee northwards on foot. This would have been so much easier had the Romans built the Plymouth to Exeter superchariotway but unfortunately they hadnʼt quite got around to it. Thatʼs the story up to date, or to 1066 at any rate. The disdainful conquerors renamed the township Villedésagréable. But over time those who settled here actually grew to quite like the place and decided a change to something more ʻagréeableʼ might increase property values. Their command of the English language being still poor they asked locals to suggest appropriate names for an attractive, typically English village. A voting day was arranged with four possibilities under consideration ‒ Drinkinswill, Hogspittle Hollow, Soggyplace and Grungeley.

The Normans were adamant there should be no reversion to Flatbeare as that would mean losing face. Unfortunately on decision day Seth Grimsley, Keeper of the Voting Trough, was beguiled and lured away by a certain Molly Fairwether and completely forgot to leave the key with a responsible personage. There being no votes cast for any candidate, ancient rules granted the returning officer the right to choose. The winner was declared as ʻFlatbeareʼ but this time pronounced as in ʻbeerʼ which sounded more English.

Now thatʼs all about to change. The governmentʼs new Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) will help with the costs of installing greener heating systems, giving people more choice. Options include biomass boilers, wood pellet stoves with
heating systems so that they can compete on a level playing field with existing technologies. However, the money is not given as an up-front grant. It will be paid in quarterly instalments over a seven year period.

This will be familiar to those who have invested in solar panels to generate electricity and are receiving the feed-in tariff (see box right). However, where the feed-in tariff offers investors a return on investment, the RHI is intended as a ʻboiler replacement schemeʼ. As such, the payments are intended to bridge the costs between the installation and running costs of fossil fuel heating systems and the renewable alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions How does the renewable heat incentive work? 1. If you already know what you want, then the first step is to invite installers to give you a quote (it’s
worth getting at least three quotes – they can vary considerably). There are some
excellent specialist companies based in this area who you can find in this magazine. If you don’t know people who can give you personal recommendations, you can search for installers on the YouGen website (www.yougen.co.uk) and read feedback from previous customers. If you want help working out what’s suitable for your home, you may want to start by getting a green deal assessment. This will list options and the advisor will be able to explain the pros and cons of the different systems. It will also identify other energy saving measures which may save you money and keep you warmer. 2. The next step is to install the system. You will have to pay the whole cost at time of installation. Once the system is installed, you need to get a green deal assessment to show that you meet the energy efficiency measures. You should also get an MCS certificate from your installer. You need both these documents to apply for the RHI. 3. The final step is to fill out the online application form on the Ofgem website.

The policy was first announced by the last Labour government in July 2009, and has been a very long time in development. It is finally due to launch this spring. How do renewable heating systems work? Heat pumps take heat from the ground, air or water and use an electric pump to boost it to the temperature needed for space heating and to heat domestic hot water. They operate at a lower temperature than traditional heating systems, so are often used with underfloor heating or larger sized radiators. They are most suitable for well-insulated properties. Air source heat pumps look like an air conditioning unit sitting on an outside wall of the house. Ground source heat pumps have a long loop of pipe buried in the ground (either in a borehole, or laid in trenches). The pipes for water source heat pumps can be laid in a lake or river. Heat pumps run on electricity. To be eligible for the RHI they must produce at least 2.5 kWh of heat for each kWh of for What's On, visit: eastdevonhub .co.uk
electricity used to run them. For domestic heating purposes the main biomass fuel is wood. This can be in the form of logs, wood chips or wood pellets. Biomass boilers tend to be larger than the equivalent oil or gas boiler, and need about 6-7 cubic metres of space nearby for storing the fuel. Your choice of fuel type will depend on both how much you have to spend, and how automated you want the boiler to be. A wood pellet boiler with a hopper will be no more hassle than an oil boiler; log boilers will have to be fed manually. Wood pellet stoves with a back boiler also qualify for RHI as long as they meet 99% of the peak space heating load. These are much smaller and work both as a room heater and as a boiler. The pellets will generally be delivered in bags on a pallet, and you will have to carry them into the house to top up the stove every couple of days. Solar thermal panels heat the domestic hot water, but do not contribute to space heating. They are a good companion to either of the above heating systems as they make the most difference in the summer months when there is no need to have the heating system on. An average family would need around 4m2 of panels.
NB - to claim the RHI both the product and the installer must be MCS certified and the installer must be a member of the renewable energy consumer code (RECC).
Other government incentive schemes for energy THE FEED-IN TARIFF - This aims to encourage the production of decentralised energy and is paid to the owners of solar PV panels, wind turbines, micro hydro systems and micro-CHP. It pays a given rate for every kWh that your system generates, plus a bit more for the electricity that you don’t use at home and export to the grid. It is paid quarterly for a 20 year period, and despite cuts in the rate still gives a 5-8% return on investment. THE GREEN DEAL - This is aimed at encouraging people to make improvements to the energy efficiency of their homes. It consists of a visit from a green deal advisor who will assess the energy performance of your home, including how you use it, and produce an advice report. This will list possible measures you could take, estimated costs, and how much you would be likely to save on your energy bills as a result. If the measures have a green tick beside them, they are eligible for green deal finance.

The hulking great bruiser from West Bromwich
The Jensen Interceptor was undoubtedly one of the most glamorous cars of the 1970s, it’s no wonder that many celebrities of the early 70s could be seen, pictured in the newspapers, rocketing away from paparazzi in these gas guzzling leviathans... Strolling around the Classic Car Show at Powderham Castle last year, dodging the intense heat (yes really), I came eye to eye with the two examples pictured and was struck by how glamorous a car this really was in its day. Can you remember the Good and Bad of the 1970s, lets start with the Morris Marina, Allegro and Austin
Maxi, definitely in the ‘bad’ category. I can still remember my father ranting about Red Robbo and also the ‘sleeping bag’ incident with the night shift workers at the BL factory - a big scandal at the time and a great story for the news boys. Let’s not forget the mighty Ford Motor Company which showed the Leyland crowd how it
POWDERHAM CASTLE’S CLASSIC CAR SHOW 2013 2013’s show was blessed with outstanding weather, it was almost too hot out in the sun, the trees providing much needed shade. It was a great gathering, the range of classic motorbikes, traction engines, tractors and motor cars was a joy to behold. It never ceases to amaze me how many people there are out there caring and maintaining these old vehicles - great affection must be the glue that holds it all together. We must be grateful to all these custodians for preserving our transport heritage - Editor
should be done. My father had several Ford Cortinas from the Mk III onwards, which was a ground breaking car for the masses. The 2 litre power plant was capable enough for overtaking purposes - really it was good for its time, especially for the lunchtime jaunt over the border. To explain further, our home at the time in darkest Dwyfor, a district of Gwynedd, was ‘dry’ on Sundays (and had been since about 1880), so a cross-border lunchtime trip was necessary. My father used to cut it fine on most occasions, but our trusty Cortina did the job (mine was a cider and bag of crisps in the car, listening to radio 1). By the way, if there’s anyone out there that remembers The Goat at Garndolbenmaen in the late 70s, I’d like to hear from you? (I should add that The Goat was/and still is a public house). I can still remember their ‘Duck in Cherry Sauce’ - Robert Carrier was the TV’s
culinary doyen and his influence stretched even to this leek strewn corner of the UK. Another favourite was ‘Scampi in the Basket’, none of your fake baskets made of plastic, but the real thing, with a serviette carefully laid inside - (I did ponder the hygiene of this setup, but hey, this was the 70s, Health & Safety being a novel concept). Getting back to it, the ‘good’ of the early 70s included the Lamborghini Miura, Datsun 240z, Citroen SM to name a few, there were loads of really interesting cars when you think back. Reading through the Jensen company’s background, it’s a familiar story - the car was launched and became a great success, Jensen couldn’t keep up demand and they struggled to solve a range of technical problems with cars of existing customers, inflation then hit. Eventually the business was allowed to trade so the government
could recoup some of their lost money. Such a pity, and ultimately another commercial failure for the ailing British car industry. Incidentally, 1967 saw inflation at about 5% and it rose steadily and rapidly to 24.5% by 1976 you can see why businesses had such a rough ride at this time. Old cars and bikes are capable of teleporting you back through the decades, perhaps that’s why people really cherish their classic vehicles, they’re a tangible conduit to the memories of their youth. Up in Dudley (pronounced ‘Dudeleigh’ for those in-the-know) between a pork sarnie and a pint of Hansons, talk turning to Jensen’s woes, they’d say it was a bostin* car - how right they were! - J. Ingles. *Bostin - great.

THE GROUNDBREAKING FF MODEL - the owner said this car was previously owned by John Bonham of Led Zepplin fame. The FF was the first production car equipped with 4 wheel drive and anti-lock braking - I should imagine these were very desirable aids to have with a car weighing in at nearly 2 ton. It certainly was a rock star type of car, hand built, thirsty, expensive and extremely glamorous.

received an email about Rocky & Scruff from their owner, Liz, who wanted to surprise her boyfriend with an unusual present. The rabbits are very well loved by both Liz and Rob, and they just wanted to get to know them better. They arrived for the consultation, between Christmas and New Year, and the rabbits settled in on their bed, on the kitchen table. We sat around to have a chat.

Through the Paces There are several dif ferences between the gaits of the horse and learning more about these dif ferences can help us to understand the requirements of riding and the effects on the body for both horse and rider. Here are just a few examples: The heart rate of the rider in walk is around 100 beats per minute and this increases by 50 beats per minute or more from walk to canter. Horses on the other hand approximately double their heart rate from walk to canter, which is one reason why they are capable of relatively superior athletic performance- their increase in heart rate from resting to maximal is many times more than a human is capable of. The amount of oxygen a rider needs significantly increases as the horse goes faster, with the aerobic demands of canter being three times that of walk. Riding a horse

that needs encouraging increases the oxygen uptake of the rider even further- by 23% at walk and 33% at canter. Riding a horse that needs restraining also increases the oxygen uptake- by 17% at walk and 22% at canter. So if you really want to get fit, ride a lazy horse at canter but if you don’t like too much excitement, be comforted that walking on a plodder needs the same amount of oxygen as cantering on a nutcase! The amount of air a horse breaths in and out increases by 30 times or more from walk to fast canter, which is just one reason why we should look after their respiratory systems with good stable management. At fast canter and gallop horses match their breathing to their stride, with one breath to every stride and at gallop, the flow of air going through the nostrils is similar to the suction on the end of a vacuum cleaner hose. There are four types of walk, trot and canter recognised in dressage and there are two different types of gallop, making 14 main gaits; although in total the horse can move its limbs in over 50 different ways. The speed of walk averages four miles per hour, working trot is around six or seven miles per hour, whilst the speed of canter varies more but goes up to around 17 miles per hour and gallop up to 55 miles per hour. In trot the head and neck are still as the movement of the limbs is relatively stable. In walk and canter, the head and neck move and so the riders hands should follow this action to help the horse maintain balance and to avoid damaging the sensitive tissues of the mouth. As well as the obvious differences like speed, each gait has many other differences; these include limb pattern, periods of suspension, forces on the limbs and body of the horse and rider, energy requirements of the horse and rider and balance of both too. Understanding as much as possible about the movement of the horse can help us to optimise performance and safety, even if we only hack down the road.

I have seen it with my own eyes. I have been qualified and practiced as a specialist Family Law Solicitor since1992 and as a Family Mediator since 1996. I always find this and similar data profoundly depressing. Over the years I have acted for both husbands/ fathers and wives/ mothers as a Solicitor and have assisted both as a neutral mediator. Over and over again, I see people who want to do the right thing for their children having their good intentions defeated or side-tracked by emotions, poor communication and a lack of trust. Too easily they can lose sight of the bigger picture. Sadly, the Court process encourages parents to say upsetting things about the other and to continue to distrust and blame each other for everything that has gone wrong.
