The Days are Just Packed! As Summer comes to East Devon, it's great to ponder all the ways to enjoy yourself. From the myriad of fairs, fetes, festivals and suchlike, to country walks, perhaps time on the beach paddling or relaxing in a deckchair, or even venturing out to do a bit of shopping, browsing galleries, stopping for lunch or a coffee. In many ways we're really spoilt for choice here - actually, what helps is if you can do a quick check on events coming up over the next week, so you don't miss the best of what's on offer. I don't know if you're aware of the What's On website eastdevonhub? If you aren't, can I say that it's a great resource for tracking all the brilliant events across the region - it really is the most comprehensive resource by a large margin, containing events from the smallest club, charity, society, to the largest festivals and destinations. What's great to see, is when our local communities prosper, especially our town centres, which are vital to our enjoyment. Without lots of hard-working businesses striving to be the best at what they do, our High Streets shrivel up and die. As consumers, we want choice and variety,
and there's sort of a 'critical mass' effect, where once you have a number of really good shops and eateries, that draws in more public footfall and consequently more businesses. We all need to do our bit to ensure our local town centres thrive, it's quite easy really, it just involves a bit of shopping followed by lunch or a coffee. We've recently seen several new retail businesses start up in Sidmouth and the feature that's inside this issue on Honiton highlights three new businesses in the High Street. Honiton's really come on over the last few years, particularly when it comes to home goods, ladies fashions as well as eateries and coffee shops. In this issue, I road tested the seriously impressive Nissan Qashqai - supplied by the friendly team at Hamilton Garage in Sidmouth. I had great fun driving up Peak Hill, the views were superb across to Budleigh. Incidentally, Hamilton Garage are one of the oldest Nissan dealerships in the country, stretching back over 30 years! We also had a chance to catch up with the people at Deer Park House (at Weston, Honiton), where you can now get involved in all sorts of courses, such as cooking on their wood fired pizza oven, bee keeping to clay pigeon shooting. In fact with so much on offer this summer, the days will be just packed!

April 2014 has seen big changes in how disputes between separating partners and about children should be dealt with. These include the introduction of a Unified Family Court; the abolition of Residence and Contact Orders (Child Arrangements Orders instead) and a greater expectation that couples should resolve their disputes out of Court with the assistance of a professional mediator.
Is Family Mediation now compulsory?
It is now a Legal requirement that a person who wishes to make an application to the Court about a family matter must (unless a limited exemption applies) meet with an approved Mediator to consider mediation before they can apply to the Court. The other party will also be expected to meet with the Mediator. Failure to do so could lead to a costs order being made against them. The preliminary meeting to consider family mediation (called a MIAM) is compulsory. In most cases it is expected that mediation will follow.
What is Family Mediation?
It is assisted negotiation. A couple will meet with an independent mediator who will assist them to discuss and resolve the issues that they wish to resolve. The discussions are confidential. The
What is a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting or MIAM?
The Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting or MIAM is a preliminary meeting with each person (I always undertake them separately) to allow each of the couple to find out more and for the mediator to assess suitability. Both will usually be willing to start mediation after these meetings have taken place and this is an important step toward finding solutions.
An experienced Mediator can make a big difference
The Mediator’s use of their skills can be quite subtle. Both need to have confidence in the Mediator. Experience can make a considerable difference to the prospects of success. Only approved Mediators can undertake MIAM meetings. To qualify the mediator has to demonstrate a certain level of experience. This is however below the standard to achieve accreditation. I myself achieved the then equivalent standard in 2000. I was amongst the first 20 Mediators to achieve the Accreditation standard with the Family Solicitors organisation Resolution in 2002 and am currently accredited by the Law Society. I have also sat on the Governing Board of the Family Mediators Association (FMA) and I supervise other Mediators. My Service
information to both. I can also make sure both ask their Solicitors the right questions at the right time, so they get best advice and best value. As a Solicitor, I usually refer to other Mediators, who are either practicing or former Solicitors. This is so I have confidence that they will refer my clients back to me when advice is needed.

Means tested Legal Aid is still widely available for Family Mediation. If one person is financially eligible, the Legal Aid Agency will provide a FREE MIAM to both of the couple. The evidence requirements to qualify are stringent, but if someone qualifies, the whole of the Mediation is FREE for them and they should also be able to access Legal Aid for FREE Legal Advice in support of Mediation.
Cheaper and better than arguing in Court
Even if you don’t qualify for Legal Aid, the cost of a successful mediation is much less than a long drawn out Court process and outcomes in my long experience of both Court and Mediation are usually better. Most importantly, parents are usually better able to get on with each other which is better for their children.

What makes us British The minutiae of our everyday lives can get lost as the years pass by. Iʼm of a generation that can still remember the noble milk bottle clanking on the doorstep, puncture holes in the foil top where the naughty bluetit had supped and when our supermarkets were in their infancy - the thought of lugging milk around didnʼt really make much

Further investment at Deer Park contributes to town economy The Deer Park in Weston, Honiton is delighted to announce that there will be further investment made into the hotel in 2014. This announcement comes after a big year of transformation at the country house hotel, with over £750,000 invested in the hotel and its grounds in 2013. Illness forces Essential Therapies to close The onset of illness 6 weeks ago, forced me to stop work immediately, but the whole picture has only become clearer this week. After having major surgery for breast cancer 2 weeks ago, with an extensive period of treatment and therapy ahead of me, I have decided with greatest regret and sadness that Essential Therapies will be closing on the 14th June 2014. We’ve had tremendous support from Guinot, who have helped to keep the salon open, although this is an initial temporary measure. I’d like to express my grateful thanks to them for their loyalty and support, and also special thanks go to my receptionist, Lesley Morris, who has coped admirably. As part of the Sidmouth community for the past 18 years, I’ve had a very fulfilling second career, which has given me great pleasure meeting so many fascinating people whom I’ve got to know well and shall miss greatly. Thanks for your wonderful support and warm thanks for all the good wishes and the lovely flowers. Farringdon resident, Janet Sawyer was inspired to start ingredient company, LittlePod, after a dear friend in the vanilla industry came over to host a real vanilla day for the village in 2006, bringing with him vanilla pods from all over the world. Well known and respected abstract artists Patrick Jones, with wife Jean and daughter Isis at their studio in Budleigh Salterton In this century anything can be Art. Media and celebrity culture have transformed the practise of being an artist, particularly since the advent of the camera. Economic and social circumstances have caused a huge influx into the West Country of educated practitioners, which the universities absorb. These colleges of higher education cannot supply creative energy or models as they are finance and government led toward technological achievement. As a young artist growing up in Devon, I was extremely lucky to attend Exeter Art College when it was a small group of buildings. Visiting lecturers were many and luminous, Patrick Heron,

Terry Frost, John Epstein and the wonderful Harry Thubron. Maggie Thatcher closed all these colleges, but I never forgot my experience of friendly, imaginative, life changing teaching. After living in New York I moved back to Devon and realised how fortunate I am to have survived as a professional artist. Running the Abstract Art Course, I am recreating the atmosphere that nurtured me. We paint in class, spend hours looking and evaluating, have stand up critiques of artists’ work and bond together in our love of painting. Its great fun as the work is colourful, exciting and rooted in a tradition of abstract painting I have experienced first hand on my travels.

Marine House and Steam Gallery at Beer are pleased to introduce two special artists new to Devon. Carolyn Tyrer who trained at Central St. Martin’s and lives in the Thames Valley says, “I love to create paintings which take a different view of familiar scenes.” She has built a large following for her charming and carefree depictions of the Thames and its environs and having only recently “discovered” the Devon/Dorset Coast, has enthusiastically added it to her repertoire. Gillian McDonald is based in Pembrokeshire and has a national following for her village and moorland imagery. Her landscapes and seascapes show the influence of the late John Blockley the noted Cotswold artist who led painting trips to remote corners of Britain for his fellow professionals including the late Michael Morgan and Martin Procter. Martin in fact recommended her to Marine House and her paintings take inspiration from the collective Blockley School of artists. Examples of their paintings are on our website and hang in our galleries.

Applying the same principles to her painting as she does her printmaking, the purposeful layering of colour, the search for the perfect composition, somehow brings a freedom and energy to her work that even the most figurative of tastes can’t help but admire. Brook Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of brand new paintings by Heidi Koenig, one of Devon’s most accomplished abstract artists today. With an enviable 18
string of awards and commissions, Heidi’s work continues to stretch the boundaries of abstract art, whilst bringing a serenity and balance that is rarely achieved within this discipline. Born and raised in Germany Heidi came to Britian in 1989 after travelling for 2 years around Australia and South East Asia. She now lives in Devon. Heidi achieved a first class honours degree from Brighton University and continued on to the Slade school of Fine Art receiving a postgraduate diploma in Fine art printmaking. Applying the same principles to her painting as she does her printmaking, the purposeful layering of colour, the search for the perfect composition, somehow brings a freedom and energy to her work that even the most figurative of tastes can’t help but admire. Always in tune with her surroundings, her home, the Devon and Cornwall border provides an endless source of inspiration, further developed by regular trips further afield. In Heidi’s own words… “The quest to create something unique and exciting never ceases. I challenge myself to continually refresh my vision and the energy

of the mark making . The most difficult part of the painting process comes with the decision as to whether the piece is finished or needs pushing to a different level altogether making the final marks that resolve the painting. It's almost a state of meditation when everything falls into place subconsciously’. These ideas reflected in the words of the late Helen Frankenthaler; ‘One prepares, bringing all one's weight and gracefulness and knowledge to bear: spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, physically. And often there is a moment when all frequencies are right and it hits.”

ell, summerʼs here at last and the hedgerows and the countryside are alive with snuffling and tweeting and I expect youʼve been pretty busy yourself?

I was privileged recently to have been asked to sit in on a ʻLionʼs Denʼ in which Exeter Lions club gave money to various small charities. Held at the Guild Hall with the Lord Mayor, it was a humbling experience to see just how little some of these charities need to continue with their valuable work. Sometime just a lockable shed for sports equipment or a few hundred pounds to give vulnerable adults a day out. It is often said that with some of the bigger charities you donʼt know where the money is going or if it is going to make a difference. I can assure you on that night we all knew exactly where it was going and the difference it was going to make. A big thank you to the Lions Club and to everyone involved that evening.

Talking of weddings, who would ever have thought that you would have to sign a confidentiality agreement to make a wedding cake? Well in some cases you do,
as Mich Turner MBE presenter of ʻBritainʼs Best Bakeryʼ told me when she came to Westpoint recently for ʻThe Big Cake Show.ʼ
There was never any pain relief needed with Kate OʼMara who died recently. I was fortunate enough to have known Kate from the days of Howardsʼ Way and went fi lming with the cast when the storyline moved to Malta. This terrifyingly exotic looking actress, who looked like she could freeze you with a word, turned out to be one of the girls! From a family of actor-managers, the stage was her passion and when confi ned to a hotel room she could often be heard moving furniture around taking chairs apart and rebuilding them for something to do! Her time on Dynasty was to earn money to plough back into her own theatre company. She told wonderful stories about how they would scrape her hair back in rubber bands and grips as a sort of homemade facelift which she insisted made her look like Fu Manchu! She also got a great kick out of the fact that when I left Pebble Mill I raided her Howardsʼ Way wardrobe for a beautiful jacket, which I got married in! I will always think of her when I look at my wedding pictures!

‘I just don’t know what to do with My Shelf.’ My all time favorite was a slogan for a local Indian restaurant called Veggie Perrins:
“I didn’t get where I am today by eating meat.”

The Race Home from Trafalgar An epic 271 mile dash in a little over 36 hours
IN THE LONG HISTORY of our Great South West Road, the most important and certainly the bestdocumented of its stories is of a race undertaken in November, 1805 by two serving officers in Nelson’s navy. The first of them, and the hero of our story, was Devon-born Lieutenant John Richards Lapenotiere. An eye witness to the Battle of Trafalgar, south of Cadiz, he carried Collingwood’s top secret dispatches back to England, detailing the battle and telling of the death of Nelson. Laponetiere was the commander of a dispatch vessel, His Majesty’s Schooner Pickle and was ordered to reach the nearest English port with the news, ‘saving neither spar nor canvas’ to take the news to the Admiralty in London. Tradition dictated that any man charged with such a mission would receive a 500 guinea purse, a 100-guinea

presentation sword - and most importantly for a 35-year old widower supporting his two small daughters and a widowed father on his £85 a year lieutenant’s pay - a promotion. He set off at 11.30 in the morning on Sunday 27th October, a full week after the battle but the first time that there and been a lull in the great storm that had followed it. The other man was Captain John Sykes of the sloop HMS Nautilus, patrolling near Cape St. Vincent off the coast of southern Portugal. One of Nelson’s inner circle of captains, Sykes had been on station since the end of August and knew nothing of the battle or Nelson’s death when he intercepted the homeward bound Pickle and ordered it to heave-to. After an hour on board Pickle, Sykes let Lapenotiere go on his way before heading to Lisbon, a neutral port, to report to the British Ambassador there so that the news could be spread throughout war-torn Europe. His hastily-written note Sykes handed to the occupants of a pilot gig he hailed at the mouth of Lisbon’s river Tagus. This

accomplished - or so he thought - he set sail again, hard on the heels of Pickle, making for the little ship’s home port, Plymouth where he assumed Laponetiere to be headed. The note was never received and may have been passed to an American warship then at anchor in the harbour. It would certainly explain why news of Trafalgar was printed in a handbill in Maine and then a newspaper in New York before the official London Gazette reached America in early December.
But Pickle had run into trouble. She had encountered a great storm in the Bay of Biscay and was swamped by an enormous

sea. Only by jettisoning her eight cannon and by manning the pumps for two days and nights did she weather the calamity. After the storm came flat calm when the exhausted crew was forced to take to the sweeps (oars) to keep the ship crawling towards the shoreline. Lapenotiere finally made landfall at Falmouth at 11.30 in the morning of Monday, 4th November, 1805. From here he immediately took the first of a series of rented post chaises - the fastest things on four wheels in Georgian England - to speed him on his way to London. Post chaises were rented out by the larger inns along the highway, where the horses were changed every 15 miles or so, along with the drivers or rather riders, for these ‘postillions’ - men who knew their own particular stretch of road like the backs of their hands - were not coachmen but jockeys, who rode on the front of the pair of horses. Although it had not rained in England since 30th October, the roads out of Cornwall were bad and deeply rutted, but Lapenotiere was duty bound to keep moving.

Food was snatched in stable yards during the time that it took to change horses or carriages. He slept as best he could in the corner of the bucking, rocking coach, wrapped in his boat cloak, keeping his legs warm in the half-metre or so of deep straw that was pushed in through the doorway before it was slammed shut. His small sea chest, propped beside him on the forwardfacing bench seat, contained his best uniform, a change of linen, soap and razor and most importantly a purse of money issued to all dispatch vessels to allow messengers like him to pay their way at the coaching inns that rented out these flying carriages. He made the epic 271-mile dash in a little over 36 hours, stopping 21 times to change horses and postillions. Where the road was especially bad or the hills steep, he rented four horses, as his receipts show. His post chaise from Crockernwell to Exeter for example cost the Admiralty £1.16 shillings: from Exeter to Honiton £1.17 shillings but from Honiton to Axminster, where there are still steep gradients, he had four horses hitched and paid £2. 14 shillings. And so on.
HMS Pickle (2005 reproduction) Expenses claimed for the entire journey, later reimbursed by an Admiralty clerk, totalled £46.19 shillings and one penny - a tidy sum and more than half a lieutenant’s pay in 1805. (Lapenotiere had to write to the Admiralty twice after making his claim and didn’t actually receive the money until the following Spring). Although he had no way of knowing it, from Honiton onwards Lapenotiere’s journey became a race, for Sykes aboard the Nautilus, landing at Portsmouth a few hours after Pickle had dropped anchor off Falmouth and finding no news of Pickle had also set out for London without delay. The race was on, each man unaware of the location - or the existence - of the other and both carriages, perhaps, leap-frogging each other in the darkness as first one stopped to change horses at a particular inn, and then the other.
He also received 500 guineas prize money, which enabled him to marry before Christmas of that same year to his second wife, Mary Ann, with whom he had seven more children. Lapenotiere obtained post rank to Captain on 1st August 1811 and after a distinguished career retired to live quietly at Roseland, outside the village of Menheniot, Cornwall where he became a church warden. We know from the minutes of a church meeting that he opposed the idea of having a chiming clock installed in the tower - which “would be enough to waken the dead” - or so he reckoned. Alas he was unsuccessful in his objection.

Newfound Sparkle Subject to much recent investment and improvement, I was keen to visit the Deer Park, particularly because of their recent new team in the kitchen, headed by Head Chef Ian Grant (previously at the Alexandra Hotel in Lyme R). Greeted by the highly personable Stuart Burridge (Front of House Manager) and second in command, Storm, we were seated in the lounge for pre-dinner drinks. Firstly, the atmosphere's great, not stuffy, just friendly and relaxed. Looking out onto the terrace, a display of black tulips and alliums set amongst the box hedging made for a very classy backdrop, definitely the sort of place sit outside on warmer evenings to enjoy a glass of wine by the fountain. Food wise, I'd experienced Ian's cuisine previously, so it was no surprise that the quality was of a high standard throughout. We started our dining experience with the homemade fishcakes, accompanied by their Grabeche Mayo, all served canapé style. This made a light and tasty start to the meal ahead, the capers and gherkins
in the Grabesh giving a clean finish. Wine - we opted for a classic white Burgundy, which lived up to its name admirably, being lightly oaked, with subtle smokyness underneath the zingy green freshness that was followed by a very long finish - excellent.

The Ham Hock Terrine was enjoyed equally, being flavoursome and colourful. Excellent. Getting onto the mains, hadn't tried Red Gurnard before (there's was a choice of 3 different fish). This was served on a bed of crushed peas with pancetta potatoes and salsa verde. The gurnard was a great choice, being both sweet and flavoursome. Loved the homemade salsa verde - another delicious dish.

I like to think of East Devon as Devon's unspoilt quarter, with Branscombe a particularly nice example of our local countryside, having steep sided and verdant valleys, tall hedgerows, flinty tracks and rich red soils.

There's a limited amount of space to park your car alongside the road by Berry Barton farm, so please be careful not to block farm gateways. This walk can be fairly steep in places, both up and downhill, so not for the frail, but it gives your muscles and lungs a really good workout and is great for energetic children! Hope you enjoy the walk and perhaps have a well-deserved pint at the end!
This walk takes you in relative peace and quiet through beautiful countryside to be greeted with different views around every corner. In places you could almost imagine it wouldn't be much different if you were a foot traveller

A major plus point of this walk is the route which, towards the end, takes you back past the Fountain Head Inn, a 14th century pub which serves real ales from the Branscombe Vale Brewery. It's a proper English pub with real fires and authentic interior - unfortunately there aren't many left now, so savour it before one of the big breweries get hold and give it the Gastro treatment. You're even allowed to bring your dog inside which is a major plus point for many dog owners.

The lovely East Devon countryside in May from Peak Hill, Sidmouth, looking westward. The Qashqai was driven around the surrounding countryside , giving a good impression of the car's handling, ride, engine and comfort. After the test, it came as no surprise this brilliant car has been voted Car of the Year by WHAT CAR
Test Drive: NISSAN Supplied by There's nothing so lovely in May (time of test) as ambling round the lanes and countryside that we're lucky to have here in East Devon. When the sun shines it's almost unbelievably green. The car driven in this test drive was the Nissan Qashqai. I've always wondered what this model would be like to drive, it's an interesting car with muscular bodywork, raised height. I really like the body styling, and think that Nissan have been bold and succeeded. In the past, so many cars have been bland and boring, as if the parent companies were too frightened to commit to proper design detail in case it scared off customers. My own feelings about this car is that it pushes the boundaries of car styling
and in fact they've pulled off a major coup, because the car is good-looking, slightly sporty, slightly off-road, urban and best of all great fun. What I really liked was the higher than normal saloon car height, making getting in and out of the car much easier. Combined with excellent front seats, this is a great boon for lower back ache sufferers. The driving seat and position gets top marks for being excellent, allowing good command of the road and great visibility. In combination with the raised height, this gives you easy control and was really a lot of fun whizzing around Sidmouth and the back lanes. Handling is very positive, there's no pitching in corners, just really taught

cornering, again contributing to the positive drive this car gives the driver. The ride quality is well-controlled and steering positive, meaning that there's lots of feedback for the driver. The model driven was the 1.5 litre turbo diesel which is free-reving, smooth and torquey, and thankfully there's no violent turbo surge, just nicely controlled power. This Nissan had no shortage of accessories. Tony, the manager at Hamilton Garage kindly gave me a demonstration of the parking assist system (it's got 3600 cameras!) which was incredibly simple to use. It's an odd feeling having the car park itself though - mind boggling really, if you'd told the previous generation that we'd

have cars that parked themselves, I'm sure you'd have been laughed at. Nissan really do produce brilliant cars, Many moons ago, I worked opposite the early Nissan importers, Caldene Motors in Tipton. My father ended up buying a van for the business which proved incredibly reliable. They've really come a long way in all those years, particularly because now Nissan build their cars in the UK at the Sunderland plant. To finish, I have to tell you that the Qashqau is just a brilliant car, I really enjoyed my morning with it, even my usually car-phobic wife asked for a ride which is unusual to say the least. A Kitchen Crisis When deciding to plan a kitchen, you firstly need to decide whether you wish to update your current kitchen or start totally afresh. Look at your existing kitchen and decide what you like and don’t like, and what you would like to keep or remove. There is no need to change the layout of your kitchen unless it is going to increase the value of your home. It’s worth seeking professional advice on whether the amount spent on a new kitchen will add financial gain when it comes to selling your property. If you want an entirely new kitchen, think about the practicalities of your space and how you wish to operate within it. Things to consider here are where you would like your appliances to sit in relation to each other. Where you will need sufficient worktop space for cooking or accommodating gadgets etc. Storage space is also something to think about when deciding on how many cabinets you will need, and then how many base units versus wall units will be needed. It is so easy to concentrate too much on the design of a kitchen and overlook the importance of lifestyle and practical usage. Firstly you will need to decide which style of kitchen you want to go for. There are so many kitchen designs to choose from, so a good place to start is understanding which look is going to suit your home and is of your taste. Modern or traditional? Of course, there are then many strands to whichever you choose, so let’s discuss the options within each range; If you fancy a modern style kitchen then you can opt for either laminate, veneered, acrylic, lacquered or foil wrapped cabinets. Laminate cabinets are durable and resistant to knocks and scratches, 44

Although it is thought of as a low cost option, you can find some good looking cabinetry in this material. Top-end kitchen companies provide these too with benefits of extra strength. A lacquered finish can either come in a hi-gloss style or matt. There are numerous colour choices and it is a protective and enduring coating. Wood veneers are fixed to a range of bases, and the use of more exotic timbers such as zebrano give the cabinets a very modern edge. Contemporary hi-gloss finishes are very different to a matt, classic appearance. Acrylic cabinetry is waterproof and repairable. It is either solid or can be sprayed on. Curves can be created using Corian, which is made up of one-third acrylic resin

Foil-wrapping can create a number of different looks, with many colours to choose from. An MDF door wrapped in foil can attain the appearance of a more expensive type of cabinet for a fraction of the cost. This style can look fantastic in either a contemporary, traditional or country style kitchen.

It naturally expands and contracts, so good quality examples should allow for this slight movement. We are so lucky to have some talented local businesses offering such craftsmanship, such as David Lloyd Cabinet Maker and Woodley’s Joinery Ltd. They can also design and craft unique cupboards and dressers from reclaimed pine, producing lovely rich colours and gorgeous smells. Obviously choosing the most attractive woods such as oak or walnut is important, however if you’ve decided to spruce up your existing kitchen then you may wish to paint your old pine units for a more farmhouse feel. For advice on paints look no further than paint specialists Wilson’s Paints who are based in Exmouth. Combining natural with painted elements also look great in this kind of kitchen. Photo of Honda CBX 1000 taken about 6 years ago at the Branscombe Air Show (which sadly has now ceased). The Honda when launched in 1978, it was a real show-stealer, 6 cylinders across the frame, 4 valves per cylinder and all aircooled. Really, it was a true superbike, weighing in at a massive 600lb, this was no bike to drop. The sound from the 6 pot motor is stupendous, especially with a racier non-standard exhaust system. I did see on YouTube, someone in America, who wasn’t satisfied with 6 cylinders, so added another 6 to make a V12. Those Americans always have to go one better don’t they!
No marks for guessing the make and model of this car. Truly before its time, the Jaguar E Type has such fluid lines, that it looks to be doing 150 standing still. Again taken at the Branscombe Air Show. for What's On, visit: eastdevonhub .co.uk

“This is the 2nd time I have used DuraLife” I wanted to replace rotten single glazed timber windows and an old wooden bi-fold door that was draughty and didn t seal. I considered both Timber and Aluminium replacements but the Flush Evolution was very practical and I liked the profile - it was so similar to timber. Since the installation, there has been a noticeable difference in the heat due to the improved insulation. DuraLife had been initially recommended when I used them at a previous property, so this is the second time they have installed windows and doors for me. “It looks so much like timber!” Our timber windows and doors needed replacing throughout, and although we would liked to have had timber again, this was prohibitive in terms of associated costs and future maintenance. We felt that the white or brown imitation timber PVCu would not harmonise with the stone cottage.

Unexpected Encounters One of the great joys of veterinary practice in my day was that, owing to the reasonable charges for visits, I was able to see people in their home environment and even to discuss matters close to their heart. In fact if a case was proving difficult to diagnose I would often make a home visit to see the animal in it’s natural home, often without any extra charge. However it could cause embarrassing moments. You have to remember there was much less crime and so folk did not lock their doors, especially in the countryside. It was my habit to just call out as I walked in the front door and this saved me waiting time which over the course of a day could add up. One such time, in Ottery St. Mary, I walked through the house to the kitchen, whilst calling out. Now the old couple must have been hard of hearing for when I entered the room Mother was stood at the kitchen table having a standup wash, stripped to the waist. Then, as I stopped in my tracks, Father appeared from behind his newspaper in the corner and cried out, “Ere what’s a goin’ orn?” I beat a hasty retreat. Quite a different experience occurred when I was called one evening to a calving near Talaton.

It was snowing a storm and I had never been to this farm before. As I passed Escot the snow was banking up and even my old Landrover was finding it hard going, when I saw the faint lights of a farmhouse. Partly to check my way and partly, if I am honest, to meet another human being in this maelstrom of a night I pulled into the yard. I knocked and walked right in. The scene I met has stayed with me all my days. At a large table sat about 10 children, graded roughly down their ages and about to start their supper. Behind them stood their Father, an almost biblical figure in a farmworkers smock. The only lighting came from the log fire and candles and this gave an ethereal setting to the scene. The man set me on my way in a kindly manner with heartfelt good wishes. That house has now been gentrified but I think of that night whenever I pass by. I often used to visit a farm at Goodameavy on Dartmoor. It was run by a very eccentric lady and even by the primitive standards of the moor it was run in a rather casual manner. You had to step over a small stream to enter the kitchen door. Come to think of it I am not sure there was a door at all. Anyway this day I walked through the kitchen and was just about

to enter the living room when 3 sheep passed me on their way out. I believe one of them even bleated a greeting to me as it passed. A much less pleasant encounter happened one summer evening when I was called away from my evening meal to an emergency at a vicarage near Plymouth. As usual the front door was open so I walked in whilst calling out. I had just reached the foot of the grand staircase in the hall when a woman appeared at the top of the stairs and subjected me to a tirade of abuse for entering her house without permission. It eventually transpired that my client, in his panic, had failed to point out that he lived in a flat at the back of the

vicarage. However such was the stream of vituperation that the vicar’s wife aimed at me that before I left I said to her, “Madam, I think you should see somebody!” This proved prophetic because a few weeks later her husband, the vicar, was charged with abusing young children and I learned a great lesson of life, that the outbursts of invective people sometimes let loose are often less about the immediate subject but more about some hidden pressure in their life. - K.Watson

Rein Contact There are two schools of thought with regards to rein contact, one is that the ideal rein contact with the horse’s mouth should be ʻthe weight of the rein’ and the other is that we should have a strong contact, pulling the reins to communicate to the horse our desire to turn and stop. Both methods are widely taught but I personally subscribe to the former, as considering the horse’s anatomy, physiology and behaviour, it makes more sense to me to avoid the infliction of pain and physical damage on the horse, as it is not only better for their welfare but for our safety too. Thankfully, some research has now been carried out on the subject of rein contact, which provides objective evidence in support of a lighter contact, rather than just relying on subjective points of view. Hopefully this work will filter through to trainers and riders and our horses can be ridden in
more comfort, without having the torture of being pulled around. I cringe when I hear a rider say they have to pull the rein to turn but unfortunately this is commonly taught because it is a short cut and the easiest method, however it is one that totally disregards a vital part of riding- the horse! Rein pressure has been proven to affect rideability in European performance horses, where it has been shown that higher rein tension and greater variability in tension results in lower scores for rideability during performance tests. Other research shows that rein type (e.g. leather/rubber/webbing) can affect the rein pressure, stride length can be significantly affected by rein pressure and many horses that have continual exposure to stronger rein pressure learn to avoid it, rather than habituate to it. Of no great surprise is that horses find pressure on their mouths aversive, and will demonstrate certain behaviours to show this aversion, for example, mouth opening, snatching and tilting the head. A common human reaction to this is sadly to apply more pressure, not less, sometimes by stronger bits and strapping the mouth shut. Horses can be ridden with a light contact, if the rider is shown how and the horse is given a chance to be ridden this way. My ponies can turn and slow down from a lightweight child using their weight aids correctly, they can feel a fly land on them after all, so they don’t need the rider to pull their hand back to apply pressure to the more sensitive mouth to communicate. Even a small child hanging on a pony’s mouth can cause soft tissue damage and bone remodelling on the jaw. A light contact, used as a secondary aid to the seat and legs is part of our communication tool kit, it can then be used more strongly when really needed, such as in an emergency. A horse is like a wheelbarrow- you don’t need to pull to turn a corner!

When someone who has problems with drugs or alcohol decides that they want to make a change, it is possible to do it alone... but it’s so much easier with support.

I quickly turned that around and sought help through EDP and I just changed things around.” Luke realised that he needed help and sought out services to help him change his lifestyle, moving away from taking drugs and finding positive and meaningful activities to get involved in. He accessed local community services through EDP, a charity who has been offering local support in Devon for 30 years. EDP supports people who have problems with their drug and alcohol use to move towards a place of wellbeing, where they can re-connect with friends, family and their community. People in both prison and the community can access a diverse selection of services from tailored one to one sessions to group sessions on a whole range of topics like relapse prevention and abstinence. EDP also offers harm minimization advice to encourage those they’re working with to reduce the risk of harming themselves. Service users have the opportunity to access workshops, training and volunteering placements; opportunities that help them to take part in meaningful activities which give them confidence to move further on in their recovery journey and when ready, employment or education. Currently the services offered in the community in Devon are done so through RISE (Recovery Integrated Service) which EDP delivers in partnership with national charity Addaction. The tailored support that was offered to Luke was key in his recovery journey. He commented “They’ve helped me a great deal, keeping me busy and
