intoLACE from 14 Sept Thelma Hulbert Gallery are preparing for their exciting Autumnal show intoLACE - an exhibition in partnership with The Devon Guild of Craftsmen. The show will include pieces from artist Catherine Bertola’s series Bluestockings. These elaborately decorated ink drawings reflect

Imogen Luddy - ‘Well Connected’ her on-going interest in the historic production of lace often produced by working class women and worn by the type of wealthy women who were members of the Bluestocking Society. Bertola, who has also exhibited at the V&A, shows her fascination with the historic role of women both as keeper of the (clean) home and as often unacknowledged, undervalued craft producers. She also explores the old hierarchy of crafts, which placed textiles (traditionally made at home by women) below such ‘male’ crafts as furniture production or ceramics.

“We have such fantastic local lace heritage in Honiton. THG is really proud to showcase contemporary National and South West makers referencing lace in their work to continue the Honiton lacemaking tradition, highlight local lace-making and take it to a modern audience.” intoLACE will launch with an installation created over two days by 24 local women who will work alongside artist Andrea Stokes. We are aiming to cover all ten of our enormous Georgian sash windows with intricate lace drawings to create the illusion of the building being veiled with net curtains. The project aims to involve local women of all ages and backgrounds not necessarily with any prior experience of art-making, who will work together to create the piece. As well as the artworks in the gallery, there will lace-inspired products for sale in the shop, lace demonstrations and a range of workshops and free family activities. Along with Honiton Library, we will be offering creative activities as part of the largest drawing festival in the world - The Big Draw! Everyone is welcome to come and participate see exhibition lists for details.

Blog Other artworks in the show include Imogen Luddy’s everyday objects - such as cake stands and plates - transformed with lace

details and Helen Snell’s threedimensional laser-cut lace images. In addition to collaborating with the Devon Guild of Craftsmen who will also be showing sitespecific installations, we are working closely with Allhallows Museum in Honiton. The museum has an extraordinary collection of lace and its applications as well as providing a hub for local lacemaking. Gallery Curator Angela Blackwell explained,

Gallery favourites, Stephen Bishop and Claire Wiltsher will also have a significant presence in the show. Sara Dudman - ‘Pack’

Linda Mattock - ‘From the Blue Mountains’

6th September - 5th October Animated brushwork, flowing surfaces of paint, and drawn line that inscribes the surface characterize the evocative landscapes of Kathy Little. The hills, meadows, forests, and more particularly the riverbanks of the North of England, a dramatic and rugged environment with its echoes of English Romanticism, are the subject matter for her new compelling emotive paintings. She begins with sketchbook studies to capture the essence of locations, but the resulting studio scale paintings are made more from the experience and memory of place. This sense that the image can evolve and develop during the process of painting gives the work a freedom of expression that reveals a profound connection with the natural environment.

The Art Room Robert Jennison RWA Jo Golesworthy

10th August to 1st September Robert Jennison is a seasoned exhibitor whose reputation as an outstanding painter and draftsman precedes him. A life time’s dedication to art education followed by nearly 30 years of working as a professional artist makes Jennison one of the regions most successful and celebrated artists. Jennison studied at the West of England College of Art, Bristol. He taught Art in secondary schools in Gloucestershire and Bristol until 1965 when he joined the staff of St Luke’s College, Exeter as Lecturer in Art Education and Art History, specialising in graphics, printmaking and photography. After the College merged with the University of Exeter as the School of Education he taught on the postgraduate Art Education course. During this time he was also external examiner in Wales for the B.Ed. Degree for three years, and with HMI he organised courses for practising art teachers in Somerset. During the 1980s he lectured on 20th Century British Art for the Beloit College USA Summer School in Britain. Jennison left teaching in 1984. He has exhibited paintings, prints and photographs regularly since 1961, with solo shows in London, Milan, Belfast, Bristol and Exeter. He is a member of the Royal West of England Academy and exhibits regularly with the Royal Ulster Academy in Belfast. His work is represented in public and private collections in Europe, Canada and the USA. Now in his 8th decade, Robert continues to produce vigorous landscape paintings from his East Devon studio. The subject is often Dartmoor or Brittany, each work is based on a series of drawings and photographs exploring the subject itself and the change from being ‘of’ the subject to being ‘about’ it. Jo Golesworthy was born in Devon in1962; she studied at Exeter College of Art & Design, Brighton Polytechnic and the Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trust. She has exhibited with; the St Ives Society of Artists; Thelma Hulbert Gallery, Honiton; South West Academy and the National Gallery of Lyme Regis. Her work is in the permanent collection of the RD&E Hospital, Exeter and the University of Exeter. She has commissioned pieces in private collections through out the UK and Europe. Her unique limestone sculptures are derived from images of pollen as revealed by a Scanning Electron Microscope and from botanic illustration and carvings. She is interested in micro-habitats, particularly where wild plants and human activity mix. The forms are hand-constructed 'wet' using direct modelling onto a ceramic core. We at the Velveteen Emporium sell what is called by some, Neo Victoriana or Steampunk clothes and jewellery. This combines the elegance and styling of a bygone era for men and women with the comfort and convenience of 21st century street wear.

A year on from when we opened our doors, we are leaving the shop now to take what we have created on the road in a bespoke trailer with stage frontage. Our aim is to reach as many people as we can in events across England, advertising our now on line shop, and hopfuly bring a little magic, theatre and wonder with our ladies and gentlemens clothing, plus hats and other fancy goods.

Our humble beginnings started at a charity event called BMAD (Bikers Make A Difference) in Paignton South Devon in May 2012. After a number of events and many "do you have a shop?" we settled down at McCoys Arcade Exeter to create a small, but beautiful boutique environment for our collection of clothing from around the world.

Looking good for 50 East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) celebrates the first 50 years

The East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) celebrates its 50th anniversary on Friday 20th September 2013. I, Kimmo Evans (East Devon AONB Community Development Officer), thought it would be interesting to seek Ted Gosling’s thoughts on the last 50 years, as a Devonian, local historian and writer for Coast & Country magazine.

Ted Gosling: East Devon has its own character and its natural features have a different beauty from the other parts of the county of Devon. The rolling hills, the wild seas, the large estuaries, the colourful landscape - these all remain unspoilt and their charm will not change with time. To many people the countryside of East Devon is one of greenfields divided by lush hedgerows and dotted with many unspoilt villages, unfortunately this image veils a conflict between nostalgia for old ways and the inevitable drive towards improvement and innovation. In the past 50 years many villages has seen an influx of urban newcomers, new houses were built resulting not only in an increase in property prices but many of our Devon lanes unable to cater for the swell in traffic. Progress

must be maintained at a sensible level, but the ever-growing influx to East Devon to fuel the economy presents a serious threat to its beauty and amenity. Some confuse development with progress. Unfortunately they are more often than not different when, for the benefit of all, they should be synonymous. Fulfilling the needs and desires of an expanding population without destroying the very things which attracted them to move here in the first place and in the process alienating born and bred Devonians is a dichotomy not easily reconciled. Change in the East Devon countryside is a complex issue which involves not only the changes themselves but our attitudes towards them, our needs for food, housing and recreation is greater today than ever before. The time has now come to attempt an appraisal of the countryside of East Devon; what is happening to it now and what sort of future we should envisage for it. By far the greatest part consists of rich farming land, much of which remains valuable for wildlife, especially where old hedgerows and unimproved grasslands have survived. East Devon is a part of the country where hearts beat at a different pace, a place where true Devonians know not only where their food comes from but that small farmers still care for the land more than anyone else. Today they face many problems as they struggle with European Union bureaucracy, planning restrictions and the drive for greater public access. Fifty years ago, market towns held their weekly market when pens

were set up for cattle, sheep and pigs, it was a time to relax, meet people and exchange news and hear other farmers discuss the price of livestock. To make money today farmers have had to seek out new markets for their produce, many of them run a farm shop or offer bed & breakfast, they also attend many of the Farmers Markets which now take place. Although farmers still occupy most of the land in East Devon, sadly farms are growing in size and declining in number.

Orchids abound in East Devon

The East Devon AONB is a living, working, farmed landscape - harvesting near Sidbury

To the farmer, our countryside is a source of income, to the leisure industry a place of recreation. For me East Devon is my home. I was born here, my family have lived here for over four centuries and coming from generations of country-lovers, the beautiful and diverse flora and fauna of East Devon will always be very close to my heart. The East Devon AONB team (Partnership) exist to protect the countryside. They deserve our support and thanks and hopefully will carry on their excellent work for the next 50 years. - Ted Gosling

Kimmo Evans: As an incomer myself (of only 8 years), I can relate to some of the points made above. But I’m sure you will agree, Ted Gosling raises a number of familiar issues and concerns in his piece, many of which are tackled and addressed through the work of the East Devon AONB Partnership, only set up in 2003 despite the designation being 50 years old, and it’s associated Management Strategy. Our ‘50th Anniversary’ Forum on Friday 20th September at Bicton College, includes a keynote speech by Professor Michael Dower CBE, son of John Dower who was a key architect of the National Parks and AONB protected landscape system. brief spell of sunshine and we are opening up the sheds and rummaging through our garden wares. It’s been so long since you last dragged that sun chair out into the light, and set up the outside table for a barbecue supper. “Oh, I forgot about these” you will exclaim whilst finding some exciting colourful piece of summer furniture or outdoor utensils which haven`t been used since God knows when.

All we need is a day out in the vitamin D air and the world suddenly seems a brighter place, smiling people wherever you turn, heading to our delightful beaches and coastal walks in their shorts. We all know better than to take even an hour of this blessed sunlight for granted, so let us have a look at how to make the most of these wonderful days in the haven that is our home. An outdoor eating area is pure heaven on a sunny Devon evening. A contemporary and colourful area with a hint of a Moroccan twist can really brighten up any part of your garden.

Woven Stripe Cushion Oka, £39

Kashmir Cushion Cover Oka, £22

If you are lucky enough to have a covered outdoor area, then you can even go for a tiled wall or floor space. The most interesting tiles are ones which hold a vibrant colour and design, but most of these are not suitable for outdoors due to the water getting under the glaze. You could get away with this if you have a covered area though, and it really would make the room set. From terracotta bricks to all glazed ceramic tiles with ornate borders or geometrical patterns, Moroccan tiles give a 12 century Andalusian feel to any space. Handmade tiles tend to have variations in colour and texture which is what give the tiles their renowned character. Local Devon ceramicists would easily be able to create bespoke tiles for you, perhaps even incorporating your own designs for that very special look. Colourful furniture and soft furnishings really kick off a fun eating environment, with very good deals on bistro style table and chair sets from local garden centres or home ware stores. The intricate details made from smaller metal pieces rather than wood are lovely, especially if you have a smaller outside area and need to save some space. Interesting and bright soft furnishings can be found almost anywhere these days, so keeping to around three colours for a scheme can help you to find pieces that will tie up in the end. Tableware is really exciting at this time of the year. The array of glass, plastic and ceramics bits and pieces you can find is simply outstanding. The key is to be fun and vibrant, with little fuss over matching pieces up. From detailed teacups to bold high ball glasses and woven bowls, just go for it and create a truly fun and interesting place to dine out, finishing off the look with a handful of fresh flowers pulled from your garden. Lining the edge of an outside dining area with potted plants can really define it. Large, colourful

planters look stunning, like the Lakai hand painted metal planter from Oka. Planting up as many pots as possible will really create a thriving environment in which to dine.

Landmann Picolino BBQ £65 There are some really interesting barbecues to choose from, with sales starting already on some of them. I personally like the look and the price of the Landmann Picolini barbecues which are available in many different colour ways and are sold in most department stores or garden centres. The retail price of these is usually £65.00, but you can pick them up for around £40.00 at the moment. These are very easy to store and easy to use, ideal for a nation of amateur barbecuers!

home entertainment

naim music streamer

SONOS PLAY:3 Stream your entire music library, music services and radio stations

Exeter based home entertainment experts Gulliford Hi-Fi discuss 'streaming'

With:

Do you ever wish that your portable radio was really portable and did everything everywhere and had great sound quality? Well, stream on and allow the comfort and emotion of music, the banter of shows and the reality of news follow you around or anticipate your arrival in different rooms.

LT Stream films and entertainment using online companies such as NOW TV, Sky Sports, Netflix, BBC, Crackle, etc.

The arrival of the internet many years ago and importantly, the increase in speed of broadband (rural situations possibly not!) have allowed the introduction of iplayer and the various derivatives that allow us to catch up, or time/music shift. Much is written and promoted about intelligent and smart TVs, but not so much about music. Not wishing to channel out the walls to fit cables has often been a good reason not to have a multi-room system. The development of brands such as Sonos and Simple Audio allows us to move information via wi-fi or over the mains to other areas of the home. Speakers are often wired to the amplifier in the room, as this remains a qualitive approach, but Sonos products like Play 3, plug into the mains and pick up the wifi signal. Internet radio and music stored on your computer can then be streamed across the system. There are wireless access points and bridges to cater for distance and thick walls. iPod docks can be integrated so the song remains the same as you travel. Naim produce a range of streamers and servers for producing high quality music for local systems and for multi room purposes. Linn use db poweramp to rip music to a NAS drive (network attached storage devices) for streaming through their systems. This is the way we now look at systems and indeed the future. Ironically our company is selling more turntables and streamers than CD players at the moment. These streaming systems can then be linked into various home automation systems so that light, heat, music and film are controlled at the touch of a button. If we go back to the TV side, Apple, Roku, Western Digital and many other products can stream to your TV, some link all your music and film together and there are also options for older TVs, so they're not redundant yet. There's also the rise of the Soundbar, but that’s for another day.

S imple audio roomplayer HD sound system features a built in amplifier and by connecting to your home computer, you can play your music on any network pc, iPod, iPhone, TV or MP3.

I

n the last edition I mentioned just a few of the many attractions of this halcyon corner of Devon. But now that high summer is upon us there is an even more sparkling array of entertainment on offer.

Youngsters of all ages might enjoy watching our furry friends go through their paces in the Frantic Ferret Fun Park at Allswell, just off the bypass. You canʼt miss it unless Old Silas has been that way recently in the combine harvester in which case there may be a dearth of signposts. Personally Iʼm not a fan of performing animals. I prefer the calmer atmosphere of the stoat reserve at Nether Scratchings where you can walk about in complete safety behind bars and observe these delightful creatures going about their normal daily lives - sleeping, hunting, eating and… sleeping. There is the alternative of driving through the reserve but I wouldnʼt recommend it as the little sods can really make a mess of your vehicle and the insurance company is unlikely to believe you. For more adult entertainment the ever enterprising Jack, landlord of the Pig & Trampoline, holds a regular beer festival with the cream of local brews on display. Iʼm told that Augustʼs guest star will be Fiery Flatbeare, a pungent sultry beer with hints of cod liver oil, jalapeño pepper and a garlic nose. Not for the squeamish - it weighs in at 6.2 on the Richter scale. On the other hand itʼs said to protect against colds, flu and mosquitoes for quite some time. Why not go along a week on Friday to the grand finals of

Golden Lungs? The preliminary round winners were selected by popular vote on the last six Friday Karaoke nights. Although rarely seen, quite a few celebrities own homes in the exclusive part of the Flatbeare valley and somehow Jack has managed to cajole four semi famousish musicians into judging the fi nal. These alleged celebrities will be blindfolded, which greatly benefits some fi nalists like Pugs Bardsley who boasts the voice of an angel but the nose of a warthog. August also brings the open air theatre season in the natural amphitheatre by the riverside (or the Pigʼs skittle alley if wet). This year it will feature a selection of riveting new works by local playwrights under the loose heading of ʻThe Pig Talesʼ. The play season kick starts a multitude of autumnal artistic events which form Flatbeareʼs pitch for nomination as Village of Culture.

Historic Dimble Hall in Lower Bathwater will be open to visitors as usual. Many will no doubt flock to its calorific teashop but this year there is a sensational added attraction, a display which should have queues forming before dawn for at great expense Tarquin Dimble has assembled what he claims to be the fi nest collection of table tennis bats in the world. A bold claim, perhaps, considering the competition but Tarquin is not one to let the grass grow under his money.

The Austin Mini Cooper by the Editor

T

oday, most people think of the Mini Cooper as the sportier version of the German mini, I suppose it’s very well put together car, with all the usual BMW flair for detail. Apparently it drives like a much bigger car and has all the usual refinements you’d expect from a car produced by this European car giant.

On my travels last year, I visited a car rally at Sidford in East Devon and came across this fine 1969 model, some 44 years old, but looking none the worse for it. The proud owner Richard Ford, was only too happy to show me round this his pride and joy. This car was born in the famed Longbridge plant (the Longbridge word never fails to bring to mind the infamous Red Robbo) and was used as an everyday car from 1969 until 1988, when it was then taken off the road and dry stored in preparation for a nut and bolt restoration. Dexter (his pet name) was restored over a 7 year period and was back on the road in May 2011.

But it’s very much removed from the original Mini Cooper, which in its day was a groundbreaking design, using a relatively small engine, but achieving excellent performance and handling. When you look at the pictures, it’s clearly from a totally different age - no computer aided design systems were in use here, it’s strictly drawing board stuff, and as such it’s very spartan in design, but serves the same function.

54

The Cooper version of the Mini was the souped up model, which under the helm of John Cooper went on to win the Monte Carlo rally in 1965, a great accolade at the time, which ensured its popularity in the showroom and

The car has had 3 previous owners in the South East, before coming into Richard’s hands. This car has the 998cc engine, with front discs, drum rear and no servo assistance - crikey, nerves of steel not supplied! Don’t forget, of course, the Hydroelastic suspension, which was a space

efficient way of replacing the separate springs and dampers of a conventional suspension system with integrated fluid filled units. These are interconnected between the front and rear wheels on each side of the vehicle, so that when the front wheel hit a bump, the fluid gets transferred to the rear, causing the wheel to lower, hence lifting the rear of the car, and thus minimising the pitch. All

clever stuff, but it does bring back memories of the Allegro and Princess models which subsequently used a modified version of this system called Hydragas. I can still remember the moans about having to get the gas topped up! The Rover (above) was another groundbreaking design in its day, that shark grill front profile was

The beating heart of this hot little car - no overhead camshafts, just pushrods power was about 55 ponies, but weight was very low and handling surprisingly good

Happy owner Richard Ford with his pride and joy (the wife’s off getting the tea!) very impressive back in the 70s. That V8 engine really knew how to drink, but what can you expect from an engine design originating from the States. I’ll always remember the first time I saw one - in the car park of The Goat Inn, Garndolbenmaen, North Wales in the mid 70s with my parents, Duck in Cherry Sauce was on the menu - all very Robert Carrieresque. Old cars and motorbikes have that ability, much like music, to transport you back in time! - Editor.

Very spartan, but purposeful none the less - the car came with all the MOT’s, tax discs, service warranty booklet and invoices for every year. A Crypton Tune in 1972 was 1 pound and 50 pence

Beer 'n Boats Beer is a cheerful, bustling place in the summer. The array of colours can be dazzling; sails, boats, beachwear, buoys, all glowing when the sun's out, the chalk cliffs bouncing light around the bay. It's a heart gladdening spectacle!

In the town there are tea shops, cafes, pubs, hotels, and an excellent fish & chip shop. Alternatively, you could take lunch on the beach, there's a delightful cafe where you can sit under a parasol and enjoy the charming ambiance that this

Staring down at the white, sun-bleached sand beneath the rock pool, I could have been in the Bahamas. I was however relaxing in a place I love just as much as any o those sun-kissed islands, Budleigh bay. Somehow I never quite got out of the habit of rock pooling down here at Otterhead where the Otter river hits the sea at the eastern end of the beach at Budleigh Salterton, and though it used to be just a bit of fun as a child searching for buried treasure as well as shrimps, it now definitely comes under the heading of therapy as I try to reconnect with myself. Today though I was on a mission and casting aside my shrimp net, I went foraging for lunch; and as lunch time treats go, it doesn’t get much better than moules au naturel. The profile of the mussel has undergone something of a personality transplant in the last couple of years and cooks like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall rave about them with justifiable enthusiasm and even the novice can buy them ready prepared from areas like the Exe estuary, which are fast becoming famed for these little bundles of sea cuisine. For me they go best as a starter served on a bed of freshly picked sea beet or marsh samphire with a warm baguette by its side and a glass of golden harvest cider thrown in, if you

Although until recently the Japanese seem to have had a monopoly on it, sushi can now be readily bought in bars and shops up and down this fair land, but to my mind nothing can beat it freshly made on the beach in spring and summer with hungry friends looking on expectantly. from the shore or buy cheaply from local fisherman selling from their boats on the beach. Fillet the fish raw, cut into thin strips and pour over a small amount of lime or lemon juice for them to “cook for ten minutes as the acid tenderises the flesh. Then hand roll a few strips of the fish with rice in a dried nori seaweed sheet or wild sea lettuce if you can find it. This is great fun and you get the knack of it after a while. Serve with mustard or wasabi if you want your sushi with a bit of an edge to it, then sit back and watch the sea roll and seagulls swirl and dream of finding Spanish doubloons when you next go rock pooling in Budleigh bay.

Tales of a Yokel

Yarns from the inimitable FCR Esgen

SIMONE by FCR Esgen I first saw Simone standing on Budleigh beach, resplendent in a small black skirt, bomber jacket and sporting little french booties. Facing the sea, her nut brown hair sped backward by force of wind alone. Simone admits openly to being a bit crazy, but I feel she is being unkind to herself. Eccentric yes, unpredictable certainly, but with a kind heart that lends a strange magnetic appeal to all who cross her path. Simone s house is the world, the sky her roof and solid earth the floor. While wild grasses and pine

forests pass quite acceptably as furniture. She sleeps wherever she is when darkness falls. It could be someones home if the party finishes there, or a vacant oak wood; losing consciousness slowly as the wine takes hold with only the fire s dying embers to warm her heart. Simone is a poet, or perhaps more correctly a travelling poet. She is one of the last of a long tradition that goes back centuries in these isles. Within living memory, in Ireland and Scotland at least, travelling

Dreamfield Alpacas These amusing animals seem to be popping up all over East Devon. Last year I visited Dreamfield Alpacas, Northleigh (at the back of Colyton). Lynsey and Ian Skinner have been keeping alpacas for the last 9 years and say that it's been a rewarding business, both for their fibre and as breeding stock to sell on. In the 9 years they've competed with big breeders and also won prizes. If you're looking to buy your own alpacas, you're welcome to contact Dreamfield Alpacas on 01404 871353. (Please note that they're not open for public visits).

About alpacas Alpacas are domesticated species of South American camelid. They are closely related to the Llama and originate from the high plain in west-central South America, living at altitudes of 11,500 ft to 16,000 ft. Primarily developed as a fleece producing animal over 6000 years ago, they were not bred to be beasts of burden, but for their fibre, which can be used for knitting products such as blankets, hats, gloves and of course the South American poncho. Do they spit? - they are all capable, but they don't all do it thankfully. If the fancy takes them, sometimes it's spit and air, but they are known to bring up their acidic stomach 64

Horsesʼ Teeth Unlike human teeth, horses teeth continually grow throughout their life, which is the origin of the saying ‘Long in the tooth’. As with many things, the way we keep most domesticated horses often goes against the natural requirements of their anatomy and physiology. With regards to their teeth, it is small paddocks, reduced variety of forage, haynets, bucket feed and reduced grazing time that all negatively affect the correct natural wear of the teeth. In the wild, horses graze for many hours a day in a natural, head down posture with access to a wide variety of grasses, plants, shrubs and trees. Domesticated horses live quite differently, often eating soft grasses and cereal feeds. Commonly they are less free to spend lengthy periods eating in a correct posture, instead being forced to eat for a shorter overall time in an unnatural posture via the use of haynets. These management practices mean that we therefore need to regularly

examine and maintain our horses’ teeth. In order to prevent problems such as mouth ulceration, gum disease, colic and ill thrift, domesticated horses should have their teeth looked at by a vet or trained equine dental technician a minimum of once a year. Some horses require checks more regularly than this, for example those with poor mouth conformation or horses that are stabled. It is worth knowing that anyone can buy a few tools and announce they are an equine dental technician, so it is advisable to choose either a vet or a person who is a member of the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians (BAEDT), whose members have been trained and examined. There are other associations, so if in doubt ask for references, check qualifications and do lots of homework before letting someone loose on your horses teeth! The presence of blind (under the gum surface) or erupted wolf teeth in the mouth can cause considerable pain or discomfort when a horse wears a bit and are one reason why teeth can cause behavioural abnormalities. Hooks, ramps or sharp points are caused by uneven wear of the teeth and they too can cause pain for the horse which results in erratic or unwanted behaviour, head shaking, abnormal head carriage, a reluctance to move forward or other symptoms of poor performance.

INSPECTION WARMLY INVITED

Having a horse’s teeth maintained is another necessary expense that ranks as importantly as regular farriery and saddle fitting. Good management practices can reduce the likelihood of problems but all horses need to be regularly checked for both the welfare of the horse and the safety of the rider. Even horses that aren’t ridden need to be looked at to ensure they are comfortable, as horses are mentally and physically designed to eat for approximately 18 hours a day and no horse wants to do this in pain. Happy riding.

BROADHEMBURY A Jewel Of A Village by Suzy Bailey

idway between Cullompton and Honiton on the A373 you will come to a signpost which reads ‘Broadhembury 1 mile.’ If you travel up that road you will come to one of the most beautiful villages in Devon. Broadhembury is an unspoilt village of thatch and cob cottages and nestles in the shelter of the Blackdown Hills. The march of time seems to have stood still here and

Broadhembury even boasts its own alfresco café culture, the enterprising shop owner having placed tables and chairs outside the premises so locals and visitors alike can sit and sip their cappuccinos, soak up the timeless ambiance of the village and watch the world go by. Even in the depths of winter, a few hardy souls may be glimpsed grittily clutching their

the village, slumbering in the summer sun, has an air of complete peace and serenity about it. Broadhembury is an estate village owned by the Drewe family who have lived in the village for many, many years and it is largely due to their influence that the village remains as unspoilt and lovingly cared for as it is. Fortunately, Broadhembury has not become a sleepy, dull commuter village and is very much a thriving community , boasting a shop, pub and school with people actually living and working in the village. The shop is also crammed full of delicious goodies, the like of which you will not find in the soulless supermarkets, my particular favourite is the locally made Georgie Porgies’ puddings. Leaflets of local walks can be obtained in the shop, one especially lovely walk takes you up to the gliding field where magnificent men in their gliding machines can be viewed close at hand - too close at times as they silently whiz in to land inches above your head. As with most Devon villages these days, Broadhembury has its fair share of “incomers.” However, this presents no problems within the village as both incomers and locals live harmoniously together, each in their own way contributing usefully to village life. There is currently a mixed group, fund-raising in order to build a new village hall, - events include quizzes, tabletop and plant sales. Here’s a suggestion for a

In reality today’s historians reveal Good Queen Bess as a serial tightwad whose miserliness and dithering brought about suffering and even death on an extraordinary scale to many of the brave men who served under her. Her sailors, at Plymouth, lived on such short rations that they were forced to fish off the sides of their ships in harbour as they awaited provisions and ammunition to fight the Armada. She was finally persuaded to loosen her grip on her purse strings after naval commander, Lord Howard had been forced to urge her, “For the love of Jesus Christ, Madam, awake and see the villainous treasons around about you, against your majesty and the realm.”

One month’s rations finally arrived in Devon on 23rd June and were distributed to the fleet. They were told that they should make them last for six weeks. With the provisions came a warning from the Queen, relates the renowned Devon-born historian James Froude, that she had forbidden further preparations to be made for supply till the month was out – after which it would take a further two weeks to assemble the rations and a further week to ship them to Devon. The men bore their suffering without complaint but the beer that had arrived was sour and poisonous and brought dysentery, an enemy more dreaded than the Spanish, that carried them off in scores.

72

Unable to endure the sight of this suffering, Lord Howard, the commander of the English fleet and Drake, both wealthy men, ordered wine and arrowroot for the sick at Plymouth on their own responsibility. Elizabeth later called them to sharp account for their extravagance which had saved possibly a thousand brave men to fight for her. Drake took it on the chin. Howard refused to defend his actions and paid the bill out of his own purse.

“God blew and they were scattered!” Elizabeth portrayed as the saviour of her people, her prayers answered by heaven-sent tide and storm, bringing about the defeat of England’s enemies.

To this, echoing the views of the Queen, Lord Burleigh replied: “by death, by discharging of sick men, and suchlike, there may be spared something in the general pay.” It is thought that more than 8,000 Spanish sailors and soldiers of the Armada perished in the

On 20th August, with the threat of the Armada barely vanished into the mists surrounding Scotland, Elizabeth, parsimonious as ever, cannily disbanded the army, not in London where it had been formed, but at Tilbury, where she had declared it to be “my personal bodyguard” and again turned her attention to the fleet, where sickness was now sweeping through the crews like wildfire.

Suffering of the fleet Although not a single English ship had been lost in the action and barely one hundred men killed, death throughout the lower decks was rife. Howard told her of the impending loss of life among the 16,000 men crowded in unsanitary conditions among the crews and wrote to the privy council in September: “It were too pitiful to have men starve after such a service.” EAST DEVON

battles or were drowned or later died of their wounds. By contrast, from the 16,000 seamen of the total English fleet barely 100 seamen died. But look a little deeper and the victory becomes tarnished. Writing of the total English losses in his book The Spanish Assault of England John Barratt concludes: “How many died through sickness and neglect cannot be known for sure: but perhaps up to half were dead by winter – roughly the same loss as in the Armada.”

the invasion has come. News of the number and disposition of the enemy ships reaches Drake and Frobisher and their fellow captains by sea the next day as a lookout ship, the Golden Hind, beats into Plymouth where Lord Howard’s fleet awaits the news, locked in by an inclement wind and the dictates of the tide. Plymouth’s protective breakwater does not exist at this point in history. The smaller vessels armed merchantmen for the most part - are sheltering in the mouth of the Tamar, the larger fighting ships are in the Sound, where they will stand a better chance of getting out against the tide by ‘kedging’. This will involve moving a vessel forwards by dropping a small anchor ahead of it and then manning winches on deck to pull the ship along.

men must be bringing to these Western counties. For only he and his senior officers know that Devon and Cornwall are safe awhile. This great crusading force has been charged with avoiding engagements if possible and making its way up the Channel to meet up with a great fleet of barges he believes to be waiting at Calais where some 27,000 hardened Spanish troops from the occupied territory of the Netherlands will embark and cross to England with the Armada as escort.

This is a laborious process but one which will nevertheless save the day and allow Howard’s men to escape and wait in the lee of Rame Head, the headland to the west of Plymouth Sound, for whatever is to come. It is not yet dawn on the morning of Sunday 31st July and Howard’s ships now lie hidden but ready for action. If they can slip out behind the Armada as it passes they will have the weather gauge – the windward position in relation to the enemy – answering the prayer of every English captain for the battle ahead. First blood comes before noon. The Armada’s supreme commander, Alonso Perez de Guzman, Duke of Medina Sidonia is called to the rail of his 1,000-ton flagship, the San Martin which, through the clearing sea mist, sights eighty-five English ships to windward of them. His own great bow-shaped crescent of ships known as the lanula formation proceeds up-Channel – transports and troopships protected in depth in the centre – warships on either side in two horns, in an unbreakable formation. So the English are out. He ignores the entreaties of his captains to attack Plymouth and continues their progress slowly eastwards, resolved not to risk an attack on Plymouth but to follow the orders of his king and sail to the rendezvous with the Spanish army from the Netherlands he believes to be waiting to join him at Calais. Howard has no knowledge of Spain’s intentions but knows that he must harass the main central body of the Armada and prevent it from landing troops anywhere. Drake’s and Hawkins’s squadrons will attack the horns of the

the coast like a breaking wave, from Wembury to Salcombe and round to Dartmouth and beyond as the sails of the Spanish galleons come into view. Ten, twenty, fifty, one hundred and thirty sail are counted. Then orange flashes and puffs of white smoke and seconds later the distant thunder of cannon fire as the galleons back their sails and slow in an attempt to entice these English into close combat. But their tormentors keep their distance, snapping at the heels of their quarry. Like greyhounds they bear down on the sterns of this slow moving prey, each English vessel attempting to describe a figureof-eight as it fires, first its longrange bow-chaser, then as it turns, a raking broadside, followed by a second as it goes about.

The battle unfolds Devon watches the running battle unfold across the broad expanse of Lyme Bay, from Start Point to Portland Bill, attack after attack, hour upon hour. A quarter of the crews that man this English fleet are from Devon, many of them the loved ones of these townsfolk and villagers who have come to view this great drama.

lanula. Onshore, thousands have waited and watched and prayed throughout the short summer night and as morning wears on there is a shout that sounds along

Some stay to watch. Others hurry homewards and look to the safety of families, homes and belongings. Able-bodied men of the trained bands (between the ages of 16 and 60) gather up the weapons they have bought at their own expense – still longbows and pikes for the most part - and hurry to the local assembly points laid down by the Lord Lieutenant of the county, the Earl of Bath. Orders to Devon’s trained bands are the same given to all

the other counties. They are to march eastwards along the coast, gathering in strength as they progress, so that wherever the Spaniards choose to make landfall they can be met in numbers.

Fire over England No help comes from the far west. The Cornish trained bands march only as far as the Tamar before returning to their barley harvest. Devon stands alone and the whole of Devon is in motion. Gallopers leave the crowds that gather at village squares and urge their mounts up, up to the headlands and promontories to put fresh flame to the braziers that continue to smoke the word along the coast to Beachy Head in Sussex, where, at dusk, they turn suddenly inland towards London, this time as a string of bright fires.

Fire beacons were very effective at spreading the message across long distances

At sea the 29,453 men, soldiers and sailors of the Spanish Armada cross themselves as they peer through the smoke of battle upon this foreign realm, “the great bastion of heresy” they have come to destroy. Perhaps Medina Sidonia - briefly overcoming the seasickness from which he suffers so badly - permits himself a smile at the thought of the panic he and his

Those troops will land between Dover and Margate and with the Armada escorting their right flank as it sails up the Thames, will advance and put London to the flame – along with England’s “heretic and illegitimate” Protestant queen - restore Catholicism to “this blighted realm” and crown Philip of Spain as its king. So much for the plans of men - a plan never to unfold, thanks to the bravery of England’s seamen and a great summer storm. The rest, as they say, is history.

The tide of history turns The running battle up the Channel pauses briefly off Calais where the Armada anchors only to discover that there is no waiting army. Fire ships are sent against them and in a desperate attempt to escape many of the galleons cut their anchor cables. For many it foreshadows the disasters that are to come. The largest of the English attacks follows on August 8th, off Gravelines, Flanders, after which the Spanish turn on their heels and flee northwards with the English in pursuit as far as the Firth of Forth. As they round the Shetlands in a storm and head west to follow the west coast of Ireland to home, all thoughts of invasion vanish and survival becomes paramount. Ships sink or run aground and in the teeth of what now turns into a full blown hurricane, unable to anchor or find shelter, 24 more ships founder. Their crews either drown or are slaughtered by Elizabeth’s troops as they drag themselves ashore. What Pope Sixtus V in Rome has blessed and declared Spain’s Holy Crusade has turned into a disaster. England on the other hand dubs the storm the Protestant Wind and sees it as a sign that God supports the Reformation. continued overleaf...

The Spanish are coming!

With most of the English fleet being refitted Philip’s cunning plan might well have succeeded – save for the October gales. This time 30 galleons are lost before they even sight the Scillies and the rest turn back.

To coin a phrase Once more England is reminded of the inscription Elizabeth has had engraved on the Armada medals she had struck after the defeat of the first Armada: Flavit Deus et dissipati sunt.

The Spanish Galleass La Girona founders off Lacada Point, Northern Ireland.. Of the 1,300 men on board, there are nine survivors. SOURCE: Notafly

First news of the defeat reaches Spain in early September prompting Philip to write: “I hope that God has not permitted so much evil, for everything has been done for His service.” Of the 130 ships sent by him against England, more than 36 capital ships are lost and a score and more of smaller vessels, supply ships and galleasses never return. More than 15,000 seamen and soldiers die, including those who either drown, are killed in action or later die of wounds.

Another cunning plan Amazingly after such a tragedy Philip strikes at England again in October 1592, with another army and a fleet of 126 ships. The orders this time are simple. Don’t chance the Channel. They are to invade England via the West Country by landing in Cornwall, occupying the port of Falmouth and then marching on into Devon via Plymouth which will simultaneously be attacked from the sea.

You cannot shepherd without a good dog…

T

his comment was made by the best shepherd that I have had the privilege to meet, although our first meeting was one which I still look back on with horror. The worst ever farming nightmare I had was when I woke up to a scene which words cannot really describe. On checking my flock one morning, I was faced with devastation. Dead ewes, maimed lambs and others in a terrible state of shock the remains of a fierce and vicious dog attack. Silence, couldn’t speak, and couldn’t think straight, so actually just wept. That was weak on my part and didn’t achieve anything, so, pulling myself together, I went in doors and called the necessary people to help clear the carnage. Within hours I heard a knock at the back door and what faced me also looked horrific! A middle-aged, certainly grumpy, male, with bushy eyebrows like you’ve never seen. He stank of sheep and his sheepdog, which smelled even worse, stood looking silently evil and carried a necklace of clinkers around his neck more commonly known as sheep s**t! His name was Mush - that’s the dog. The male object was none other than the infamous Mr Froggatt, whose name and reputation came before him. The conversation that ensued was quiet, informative, honest, but serious. The dogs had to be found and dealt with. Those couple of hours changed my life regarding shepherding and Richard became not only my mentor, but a wealth of valuable information, not just about sheep, but how to manage them and make life as easy as possible. The trouble was we’re both strong characters, full of our own opinions and slightly stubborn - a good recipe for regular differences of opinion. My first lesson came quickly! “Janet, you cannot shepherd effectively without a dog.” “Yes I can, I do well now without a dog.”

sheepdog by Kay McDonagh

“Yes, you shake the bucket and they run towards you, that’s because they love the expensive, unnecessary food you are giving them. One day they will turn a blind eye and then you’re b******d! I’m telling you woman, you need a dog, and quick.” The options were a trained dog - couldn’t afford it, and what was the fun in that, or… a pup, which, of course, would no real benefit for at least 8 - 12 months. It had to be the latter option and I’d have to keep shaking the bucket for a while longer. Scanning the local papers, I soon came up trumps and I set off to see a litter of border collies - I thought all puppies were gorgeous. Not this litter - a mixed bag of ugly, timid, wormy looking pups. Poor things! I took pity and said I am sure I could sort it. Richard told me not to be so b****y stupid and told the owner, in no uncertain terms, that we were not purchasing! The next litter - gorgeous, playful, beautiful coats and, yes, you could take the lot home. I’ve been brought up in a male world at home and at work and they are uncomplicated (well most are) and so a dog it had to be. I called him Jack - a strong tri-coloured, handsome dog. The next 12 to 18 months were great. I was learning - Jack was a great pupil and Richard a miserable, demanding, blinkin’ good teacher. No more bucket shaking. After a very long, hot morning moving sheep, worming and general maintenance, Jack was knackered, long tongue hanging out and panting and soaking wet from a quick dive in the sheep trough. Richard declared “You need another dog.” I quickly retorted “No I don’t, Jack is brilliant and so young.” “He might be all those things, but one day some idiot driving too fast down the lane will run the bugger over, or worse still, you might, by accident... I know - I’ve done it.”

Kipper, number two dog, was big, bold, better bred, had style and class and, I suppose, I had improved as well. Jack and Kipper worked well together, but didn’t have quite the calm relationship I had hoped for. Two strong, entire males - hardly surprising. Kipper was running so well that Richard persuaded me, against all odds, to enter a sheepdog nursery trial. I was convinced that I was not good enough, would make a fool of myself and the dog. The day arrived. Even on the journey there in Richard’s disgusting, minging, sheep-smelling truck (complete with the equally disgusting, sheep-smelling Mush!), I was trying my hardest to pull out. No chance! My turn came, up to the post we went, shaking, worrying, what was I doing. I sent Kipper “away to me” (out to the right). He gathered the six sheep, brought them steadily to me in a relatively straight line, round the back of me and they set off on the first short drive, aiming for the two gates and the gap - a difficult thing for a dog, as they naturally want to bring sheep to you, not drive them away from you. So far so good. Through the gates - “come by Kip”... no response, “come by Kip”... no response. S**t. He drove on and on, not listening to me at all and ended up driving them into the little stream bordering the trials field. Total embarrassment as over the tannoy the judge said “I think you need to retire Mrs East”. Given sheep hate water, Kipper was clearly impressed - at home he struggles like mad to push them through water-logged gateways. When I eventually got to him and the sheep, he, bounded up to me, tail wagging furiously, so pleased with his efforts. He thought he’d won the day. I had to smile. I was embarrassed, but, perhaps, not quite as much as the gentleman who ran after me. He sent his dog “away to me”, running beautifully, past the sheep, on and on - but the dog was soon totally out of sight amid gallant efforts at concise whistle commands which soon degraded into abusive verbal commands by his owner to stop his progress. The dog was found four miles down the road at the local pub! My trialling career started and ended on the same day (although my new bitch, Nell, only 2 years old is something very special...! ) 75

hen you are driving along small and windy country lanes, passing through villages dotted about in the East Devon countryside the last thing you might expect when passing a sleepy village hall is to see it bursting at the seams with local villagers watching a professional music, theatre or dance show. Well, if the village is part of Villages in Action's rural touring scheme then you might well encounter that very sight. A Devon-based charity, Villages in Action (VIA) works with over 70 villages across much of Devon, supporting local people to come together in their communities to organise high quality performances on their doorstep. A team of volunteers in a village will choose from a menu of performers and then they will have all that they need from VIA to promote the show and sell tickets. For many it is an opportunity to see top class musicians, dancers and theatre companies without travelling to large cities miles away and there is the added bonus of knowing most of the audience too. chatting to each other about the show they’re enjoying, or about life in the village or even planning their next village event. Events also raise funds from the ticket sales to help improve the facilities with some villages promoting other live events, or buying new chairs, lights or equipment for their hall.

VIA has a new project emerging on the horizon as we support up-and-coming Young Promoters across Devon. A pilot project last year involved students from Axe Valley College in Axminster learning all there is to know about staging an event. The young promoter team organized a hip-hop theatre show called ‘A Countryboy’s Struggle’. This one-man production with the actor playing 40 different characters, had rave reviews at Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival and was

A cure for nagging back pain is a ladies massage at the Royal Glen Hotel Last month I was treated to a lovely massage at the Royal Glen Hotel. The treatment is open to all residents of the hotel and also for ladies who live locally. What a great gift idea for a birthday treat! Susan was waiting to greet me at reception and once in the treatment room, she suggested a mix of basil and lime oils for my massage oil. The aroma was fantastic. Susan is trained in aromatherapy and mixes all her own oils to suit your individual needs. After a lovely relaxing massage I must admit I felt totally relaxed. It’s an experience which really promotes your well-being and offers a little refuge from the relentless stresses of modern life. The cost is £35 for an hour`s massage - so go on treat yourself ! Incidentally, my back felt wonderful afterwards - no sign of that nagging lower back pain.

Mastering the art of effective communication

makes sound business sense...

environment so it is important to take note of a few tips and get it right: •

Written by Katina Styles, a director at Axminster Tool Centre Ltd

Match your language to the media being used and your readers ‒ how you speak on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook needs to be vastly different to a formal letter or email. At all times keep it professional, again whatever the platform ‒ you can still be friendly but an ‘x’ at the end really isn’t businesslike!

Once you have committed to the written word whether by way of hard or virtual copy there is no going back; communications can be read time and time again and interpreted in many different ways ‒ it is very easy to end up saying something completely different to what you actually meant to say! Poor communication skills

lead to misunderstandings which in turn lead to conflict and stress and will ultimately harm your business. The effective use of communication and how your business is portrayed both internally and externally is vital to success ‒ yes, ‘it’s good to talk’ but do make sure the talk is good!

‘It’s good to talk...’ So said a well known communications company in the 1970s and it undoubtedly was back then and still is nowadays but... and it’s a big but, things have moved on! These days we can talk anytime, anywhere and we’re not just having conversations face-to-face, on the phone or over the internet; more and more we are relying on the written word via a range of media to convey messages both internally and externally within our businesses. The ability to communicate and to communicate well is one of the biggest factors in business success. You may have invented the most life changing product since time began but if you are unable to effectively interact with all those who can make it happen whether it be investors, suppliers, customers or employees, then it will never get off the drawing board. In other words, and we are concentrating on the written stuff here and leaving the ‘verbals’ for another time, you need to hone your skills and get to grip with all those communication highways out there. In today’s world we rely on emails, texts, social media, the internet and, of course, the good old-fashioned letter to get our messages across whether it be by way of sales, customer service, marketing, or in our dealings with staff. Effective communication can resolve differences, build trust and respect and create a positive and flourishing

Avoid writing when you are angry as this will undoubtedly come across; best to calm down first and then chose your words carefully. Particularly be aware of sending ‘flame’ emails; emails that you hide behind and put into words what you would never say to someone face-to-face - these can be particularly distressing within the workplace and may lead to relationships breaking down.

Do take time to proofread your letter or message; mistakes can reflect badly on your Company especially when it comes to your attention to detail. If you are able, take time to reflect upon and hone what you are conveying before you send it.

Presentation is all important and is an opportunity to reinforce your branding. Consistency of style is key here and your employees should all be aware of how you like things done. Stick to a Company format by way of font type, size and colour; introductory greeting and sign off ‒ this is easy to set up on email and a series of standardised templates should do the trick when it comes to letters!

MANAGING your MONEY

Her firm also provides a specialist annuities ser vice for people approaching retirement and newly retired, which operates nationally.

More retirement planning tips Have you got everything covered ?

Should you buy an annuity? It is being widely reported that some annuity rates have recently improved with many providers increasing their rates. This is partly linked to gilt rate movements triggered by the anticipation of the ending of quantitative easing in the US. The announcement also affected the stockmarket and the FTSE index fell back from around the 6,800 mark to the lower end of the 6,000 range. At the moment, it would appear that there is no reason for gilts to move again in the near future so annuity rates may be constant for a while. The question about buying annuities could be tied up with timing and also whether or not this is the most suitable retirement product for you. There are a wide range of retirement products which should be considered including fixed or third way annuities, investment annuities, drawdown and phased investment to name a few. Clients are increasingly looking at a range of different solutions rather than just one product. For some clients, digging a bit deeper into their circumstances, it turns out that death benefits and spouse`s benefits could be the most important aspect of the product and therefore exploring what`s available both with annuities and other products is important. Don’t forget, once you`ve bought an annuity you are normally committed for the rest of your life - if you make the wrong choice you will be stuck with it. Our independent advisory service aims to provide you with advice on the most suitable choices - so you can rest assured that you have investigated all the options.

Will your spouse be secure? Many DIY annuitants forget to consider death benefits. I`ve touched on this above but it might be that annuities don’t offer the most suitable death benefits for everyone. Analysing your finances and working out how a partner or spouse will cope in retirement is very important. This is especially important if your spouse is younger and you might still have dependant children. As discussed in previous articles, retirement is getting longer and if you have a younger spouse then you may need your retirement fund to work even harder. The press recently reported the case of an individual who failed to take out any spouse`s pension or guarantees when he bought his annuity and unfortunately his wife was widowed shortly after. Apart from the obvious emotional stress of the situation, his widow`s financial position would appear to be in trauma too. The other aspect to consider here is that if you do have to consider a younger spouse, the effects of inflation may be much more strongly felt and therefore you need to take this aspect into consideration as well. A review of your overall finances would almost certainly be a good idea at this point.

Checking the small print Taking the open market option (OMO) might not always be the best move. Some older pension policies offer guaranteed annuity rates. There are often conditions for being able to access a guaranteed annuity rate, for example, the policy may stipulate that the guaranteed annuity must EAST DEVON

be taken without escalation, so you need to know what is on offer. More importantly, you need to know the time frame for taking these guaranteed annuity rates because if you fall foul of the deadlines you might miss out. Some companies will offer days of grace so you will need to ask the right questions to get “in the know”. We will check this for you and also get quotes from your existing providers so that you can see exactly what`s on offer.

Stockmarket timing As mentioned above, a speech in the US (admittedly on a very important subject) can trigger-off rapid stockmarket movements around the world and also annuity rate changes (sometimes not to your advantage). It is generally accepted as best practice to attempt to gradually crystallise your fund value as you approach retirement. Gradually switching into cash or other less volatile fund in the final years to your retirement might be the most suitable approach for you so that you avoid the possibility of a big stockmarket crash significantly reducing your fund just before retirement. Don`t forget though you could miss out on last minute stockmarket rises too by using this strategy. However, protecting what you`ve got may be the most important factor for many of those coming up to retirement.

Coast & Country

Donʼt forget your health and lifestyle Over the last few months we have seen 2 new entrants to the enhanced/ impaired annuity market. More and more conditions are now qualifying for enhancements and some lifestyle factors, for example a stressful job, in combination with a lifestyle condition might qualify you for an unexpected enhancement. There`s now a bigger market and more companies competing for these types of annuity so you are more likely to get an enhancement. Moreover, it pays not to just look at one specialist provider but the whole market. Don’t forget that different companies will specialise in certain conditions and illnesses therefore you might not get your ideal match by just looking at one company. As independent financial advisers we aim to research the whole of the market to provide you with the most suitable product. This is a market in which we are constantly involved and we have in-depth expertise gained over many years to help you get the most out of your retirement fund.
