The J Banks Collection for Stanford originated in 2007 and began because there was a niche missing for more contemporary or cleaned lined furniture and at the time, J Banks Design needed the transitional pieces in differing scale and proportions for both their residential and hospitality projects. BLUE & WHITE The marriage of blue and white has been an enduring motif in the decorative arts here are some matches that just seem like they’re made in heaven. In my opinion, blue and white is one of them - and to me, it also feels innately and classically southern. That could be because blue is the hue that we see most around us every day in our environment. Our southern skies are so often a bright, clear wash of aqua, interrupted only by white clouds that remind us of cotton. Many of us in this region also live close to the ocean, a lagoon, a lake, or a river. Blue comes in an almost endless variety of tones, which our vistas show us so magnificently: indigo as the last light dies at sunset; cobalt in the lobelia just beyond the front door; the Wedgwood blue of hydrangeas; the powder blue of early morning skies and the slate-tinged grey-blue of the Atlantic in Winter months. Since blue is also on the cool end of the colour spectrum, it does actually feel cooler to walk into a blue or blue-and-white room, especially when the temperature tops 100 degrees Fahrenheit on a sizzling hot Summer’s day. Blue-and-white accessories are very collectible and classic southern favourites. This makes sense, historically speaking: as our forebears sailed around the globe, they regularly brought back home the fine works they discovered abroad. Not least among them were the porcelains and ceramics in blue and white that now adorn so many of our historic houses. I have always found it fascinating that although the patterns differ, the palette itself unites cultures as far flung as the Chinese, French, Portuguese, Dutch, Danish, Japanese and Moroccan, just to name a few. Psychology indicates that blue surroundings allow the brain to become more creative which suggests to me that the colour has a relaxing effect. In my experience, everyone responds quickly to blue-and-white fabrics in all sorts of patterns, from stripes to nautical themes, from nature views to geometrics and more. Our coastal clients very often prefer the combination of blue and white to any other. And that makes sense to me. In linen and cotton, blue- and-white designs look sharp. They are fresh, crisp and clean and make a room feel bright and happy. One of my clients in Florida, in fact, has asked that I use blue and white, and only blue and white, in her homes - and I’ve now done that in the three I have designed. With her, I feel that I have used every blue-and-white fabric that exists. Ever since the ancients discovered pigments and dyes, the marriage of blue and white has been an enduring motif in the decorative arts. For many designers, myself included, the two remain a perfect pairing. From inky indigo to ice blue, from broad stripes to narrow bands, from intricate geometrics to complex florals, the range of possible hues and patterns is endless. Their juxtaposition also feels to me like a part of my southern heritage, perhaps because it ties us into this landscape of water and sky. Blue and caramel is another of my favourite combinations. Here is another perplexing truth: colour can, and does, change depending on environmental factors. From one time of day to another, from one location to another - meaning surroundings, longitude, and latitude - the same colour can seem to be a different hue entirely. The living room walls of my family home on Hilton Head Island exemplify that kind of changeability. When people ask me for the paint colour, which is grey, I give them the paint chip. Their response, always, is, “no. I want your blue.” Now, our house is right on the water, and our living room focuses on that view. We get a great deal of natural daylight, as well as reflected light on the water. Because of where we are and the quality of light that fills the room over the course of the day, that grey reads as blue. At night, it becomes another colour altogether. That’s why I always advocate adapting the palette to the place as well as the person.

She shares her gracious hospitality and invites readers into her life and home. ‘I wrote this book for many reasons,’ said Joni. ‘Mostly, I wanted to share my philosophy of luxury without pretense. For me, it’s all about how we use space vs. how we see it. Of course I want the homes and resorts I design to look beautiful, but they won’t actually be or feel beautiful if I haven’t understood and then planned for how people will live in and use each space. That’s what creates comfort in my view.’ ‘Where will people sit and read? What and where will the conversation areas be? How is the view incorporated into the room? How do the indoor and outdoor spaces relate to one another? These, to me, are the basics of comfort. ‘Then I look for luxury products that are user friendly because I want to create a relaxed, easy atmosphere. Now that there are luxury fabrics that actually wear well, I look for beautiful fabrics, especially upholstery fabrics, that allow us to put our feet up on the furniture. Fabrics need to be able to stand up to the daily wear of wet bathing suits and sandy feet of children, their friends and pets, so performance fabrics come in very handy. Furnishings, and seating especially, should be comfortable for lounging, for flopping and for those naps that you can only take when you’re on holiday.’

MAKING A HOME PERSONAL I like to collect and surround myself with objects that reflect my taste, my interests and life - they make me feel comfortable
P
eople who lack confidence in their own taste are often influenced far too much by show homes, interior magazines and hotels, which are designed to appeal to as many people as possible. They end up with homes which are soulless, bland and devoid of personal expression. I like to collect and surround myself with objects that reflect my taste, my interests and my life - things which describe who I am and where I have come from - whether they are good or bad, stylish or kitsch. They make me feel comfortable. So I try to do the same for my clients. I take them on a journey, stretch their imagination, expose them to new ideas and get them to think about what is possible in different ways. In turn, I want to learn from them and understand their experiences and what makes them tick. Then I can respond to their ideas and needs in a genuinely personal way. I once knew a designer who allowed the client to bring nothing but his clothes to his new house and within a year he had moved, as it never felt like home. However beautiful a house may be, if a client does not enjoy living in it, then the design is a failure. I prefer to work very closely with clients and slowly build up a sense of what they like. Starting points can often be quite obscure. A project may evolve from a favourite piece of furniture or a painting, but it is the layout which is the most important decision. Understanding how the client lives and wants to use the house can lead to quite an unusual layout. We are currently designing an upside-down house - the top floor has the most magnificent views over the garden of a London square. It is the obvious place to live, so a lift is essential - and

a big one, not a vertical coffin. The lift has been designed as a mini art gallery with precious and beautiful art and materials which benefit from being seen close up. The lift is also largely made of glass, so you are always aware of where you are in the building. I am working on another project where I have to adhere to the principles of Vastu - which is a bit like the Hindu equivalent of Feng Shui. Its rules throw up all sorts of challenges. For example, beds have to face north - even when there are wonderful southerly views. But fulfilling Vastu’s requirements also leads to unusual and imaginative solutions, making the end result feel all the more personal. One of the best ways to ensure a house feel like home is to take the client on a trip - Italian marble yards are usually a great success. It often works out that the marbles you had in mind are discounted when the client sees fossilised timber, beautiful onyx and a whole range of startling marbles in daring colours. But that is what it is all about and a hard day’s work is rewarded with a delicious plate of pasta and some good Chianti. Sometimes it is necessary to travel further afield - hunting for beautiful semi-precious stones in India for a unique master bathroom. The world is our market place so we like to show people a range of things which are new, exciting. I always enjoy taking clients to our favourite fabric houses - Rubelli, Pierre Frey and Alton Brooks, for example. We ask them to wander around and pick out any fabrics they like. It doesn’t take long for a colour scheme to emerge and, with a bit of skill, their choices can be turned into a coherent scheme quite easily. At the end of a project we often have a pair of slippers made in a client’s favourite fabric - just as a bit of fun.

W
here do we go from the furore that is the trend for mid-century style? I have been keeping a close eye on the direction of interior trends over the last few years. I continue to be a lover of the mid-century classics and I was therefore quite surprised when it was seen everywhere and became a trend. With hindsight, I soon realised that it was exactly what the interiors and design world needed; a good cleansing, a concrete trend to build upon, reinterpret and then move on from. The clean and often austere designs of the 1950’s onwards seemed to reflect the pared-back feeling of austerity that prevailed at the time. It also inspired many designers to think about functionality and the purity of design. As a result, the style has developed using new technologies that were not dreamt of in the 1950’s; exciting times to be in the design world indeed! Now we are adding a new element to this new scene – glamour. Twenty years ago, I moved to South America to create a retreat hotel in the countryside and here I found a new love to mix in with my mid-century pieces – the glamour of Art Deco. You can see influences of this elegant style popping up everywhere now. The message is ‘forget austerity measures, we want luxury, we want to feel good!’ I am of course referring to the materials and fabrics that are currently en vogue, including brass and chrome. Lighting has taken on a smart sleekness, like the beautiful designs that have taken influence from Aerin Lauder (who is one of my favourite designers). Occasional tables – think smart, think elegant with smooth metals and glass and throw in some mirror and marble. You get the idea. I have just enjoyed designing my first ‘brass-and-glass’ collection for I&JL Brown and Fauld Town & Country to launch at High Point this year and I could not have been happier, mixing the two styles together. Velvet is back – gorgeous and tactile. It was a staple of the Art Deco period and it looks great on the new contemporary designs of today; add some contrast piping to a great sofa design and it is elegance personified! Fit for Garbo and Coco Chanel. The other fabric to add to the mix is fine-textured linen; I think this material is great for drapes. Velvet and linen, sumptuous and crisp, luxury and simplicity, are perfect together. The other exciting element making a comeback is colour – thank goodness for colour. I always say to my clients ‘don’t be afraid to throw in a third or fourth colour.’ On a final note, there is a bird that epitomises all the elements and style that I have been twittering on about above; the glorious Peacock. Next time you are choosing a colour scheme, think of him and go wild.

BETTER IN SMALL DOSES Your surroundings should be a reflection of your life and not your recent trip to Home Goods

nterior designers have a love/hate relationship with trends. We are children of the 70’s and 80’s respectively so this is probably why we tend to shy away from anything ‘trendy’- too many visual scars! Although it is interesting to see gold lame coming down the runways again, we don’t generally prescribe to the practice of following trends in the home. In fact as a rule, we try not to follow trends. Yes, we have loved seeing Mongolian lamb on every conceivable surface and yes, we’d be happy to lacquer your ceiling but, by and large, we see our job as your interior designers to steer you away from ideas that are too much a part of popular culture and more towards the timeless. That’s not to say that we object altogether. The biggest problem we see with trends is that they can be exhausting and expensive to follow. While trends in fashion change at least three times a year, in interior design, change comes about more slowly. It’s simple to change a tee shirt or a hem line; a sofa or cocktail table is more difficult. Unlike your daily wardrobe, for the most part, the home is not for public viewing - or commentary. While the home should reflect the homeowner and all of their interests, it does not necessarily have to reflect their public persona. One thing that’s great about trends is that a little goes a long way. If it’s something that is easily changeable we’re all for it. It’s important to remember that virtually everything we’ve seen in design was at one time considered trendy. Minimalism, Maximalism and everything in between has been considered the look of the moment. Egyptian Revival, Baroque, Rococo, Beaux Arts – all at one time were ‘nouveau’ both on your body and in your home. The trick to finding a way through the trends is to identify what works for you in your home and in your life. It’s easy to pick up a magazine and try to emulate the designs you see in print and in the editorial features. It’s another thing to live with the design that you actually love for what it represents to you as opposed to where it is currently featured. 88

A particular trend that has real staying power is that more and more people want to be comfortable in every room of their homes. Disappearing are the days of the formal living room. Dining rooms have to be ready for both champagne and chocolate milk! The builders and architects we work with are creating totally open floorplans for more family and guest interaction. We think this is fantastic. To that end, when we are working with our clients and the time comes to accessorise the room and add artwork to the walls, we find that using family heirlooms, found objects and pieces that tell a story are more important than ever. If you’re going to live in every room in your house, your surroundings should be a reflection of your life and not your most recent trip to Home Goods! For reasons emotional or financial, almost everyone has to make one or more existing pieces work into a newly designed space. We generally welcome this challenge. A balance has to be struck between what works in the space and what makes you happy to be in it. One rule has always proved true for us in interior design: if you love it, it will work. In conversation it might make you sound nuts to describe a room with Chinoiserie fabric and mid-century furniture. In person it may just blow your mind. Good design does not have to make sense, it has to give you a feeling. Whether that feeling is being at home or simply being inspired, the evocation is the essence of a well done room. Like most things in life: good cheese, good wine, and sequins – trends are better in small doses. We applaud incorporating them into your home if you truly love the look. Just be sure it’s for your pleasure. That way, it will always be a sound investment. Some things never get old. Some things improve over time. The one thing that hasn’t changed is the feeling we get when we come to that place we call ‘home’. When you cross that threshold, it should be all about you. The clothes are tossed, the public persona put away and your home and all it evokes truly envelops you.

nterior Designer, Erik Galiana, was tasked with the project of turning this classic New York Fifth Avenue two-bedroomed apartment into a modern and contemporary space. The family has homes in London, India and San Francisco, but were wanting a base in New York - where both their children are currently studying - to feel like home when they increasingly spent time in the city. The 1,276sqft apartment is built with classic New York pre-war architecture, and it was important to the clients to keep the aesthetic of the building whilst simultaneously modernising the interior in a sympathetic manner. Having previously worked with the couple on a previous home, Galiana had a firm
relationship built up and was able to utilise that to meet their exact design needs without compromising on a style that was befitting of the apartment. As well as incorporating a lot of furniture from their previous, new construction property, Galiana integrated lots of new pieces and accessories to give the apartment a fresh new feel and capitalise on the sleek look. A beautiful dark wood herringbone floor throughout this apartment gives a rich tone and the walls have been painted a variety of neutral tones to complement this and allow the artwork and furniture to stand out. The entrance hall displays opera posters in frames for a striking red accent on the walls, and a central circular hall table holds a vase of lillies for further colour.

An accent of red is added by the framing of Opera posters on the wall, and a door leads off to the equally elegant kitchen area. The dining room benefits from white wood panelling on the bottom half of the walls, and a glass dining table (and accompanying chairs were designed by Thomas Faulkner) allows full view of the opulent floor below. Thin backed chairs and a console table complete the room, whilst a variety of abstract artworks adorn the walls giving a pop of colour. The living room is a mostly monochrome space with a large geometric print grey rug and grey sofas and footstools. A glass computer table to one side provides an area for working, and a splash of colour is added with dark red throws and cushions. The walls feature a collection of black and white images of famous American stars in keeping with the New York location. The master bedroom is dominated by a grand bed with an opulent padded cream leather headboard. Texture and interest is added with a collection of throws and soft cushions in a variety of styles, and a soft grey rug gives an additional warmth to the floor. Matching bedside tables with large cream lamps complete the elegant look and the New York views are evident from the window. The whole apartment is a triumph of understated sleekness and is elegant in its simplicity. It has a definite home from home feel for the clients when they are visiting the city and is finished to the immaculate high standard that Galiana is renowned for. 92

THE LIBRARY OF CHAIRS The chair is a perfect DNA marker for the ever-changing evolution of furniture design
T
he chair has captivated designers, architects and consumers more than any other genre of the decorative arts. Chairs resemble the human body, an anthropomorphic form possessing backs, legs, arms and seats, bestowing a natural familiarity which helps explain their universal appeal. As educators and historians, we use chairs to teach and train students because they symbolise the life and time of the designer, maker, and user. As with any work of art, we can learn about the culture of each chair by looking at how it was made, who made it, when and where it was made and why it was created. We can look to the social, political, religious, and economic factors that influenced the chair’s origin. Thus the chair is a perfect DNA marker for the ever-changing evolution of furniture design. George Nelson was the Director of Design for the Herman Miller furniture company and designed much of the 20th century’s most iconic modernist furniture. Mr. Nelson wrote, “every truly original idea, every innovation in design, every new application of materials, every technical invention for furniture-seems to find its most important expression in a chair.” Another great designer of the 20th century, Mies van der Rohe, wrote, “the chair is a very difficult object. Everyone who has tried to make one knows that. There are endless possibilities and many problems. The chair has to be light, it has to be strong, it has to be comfortable. It is almost easier to build a skyscraper than a chair. That is why Chippendale is famous.”

In 2011, my wife, Martha, and I established SIDE (Sutton Initiative for Design Education) at Salem College. You may recall the article in the Spring issue of BRIDGE by Dr. Rosa Otero about the 240 year old women’s educational institution in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A major component of SIDE was the establishing of a “teaching” chair library. This resource is unique in that no other college or university in the country has assembled a comparable collection of chairs that students, scholars, design professionals and manufacturers can study and use as a source of inspiration. Containing 45 chairs which are considered “icons” by furniture historians, each chair is unique in its design, use of materials and technology, innovation and creativity. The chairs in the Sutton Chair Collection have stood the test of time. The designers of these icons, including Thonet, Mackintosh, Breuer, Gray, LeCorbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Wright, Wegner, Baughman, Jacobsen, Starck, Gehry, and Charles and Ray Eames (just to note a few) are highly regarded for innovation and insight. Credit is also due to those manufacturers who had the commitment to put these designs into production: companies such as Knoll, Artek, Vitra, Coggin, Herman Miller, Cassina, and Emeco. The Sutton Chair Library is open to the public and is devoted to the advancement of knowledge of furniture and design for members of the furniture industry, design professionals, scholars and students.

Gallery Paris. This contemporary creation, made with raw materials and precious metals, is inspired by the relief of the Moon and other planets. Looking right at home against the silver cloud design upon the ceiling, it gives the whole room a celestial quality and ‘other-worldliness’. An impressive amount of seating sits upon another bold rug design. The theme of mirrors and dramatic lighting is continued in the dining room which features a whole wall of mirrors to double the perceived space. The glass dining table keeps the feeling of infinity within the room that Faivre was trying to achieve and allows a full view of yet more art on the floor with another swirling blue pattern. The bedrooms are a slightly calmer take on the same theme - with the original parquet floor continuing throughout and the same neutral tones of greys and silvers used in the décor. Clever use of wall lights and lamps give the room a cosy feel and the use of many layers and textures on the bed makes it feel very inviting. Gérard describes his work as the most satisfying vocation there is. ‘The happiness I feel in undertaking and finishing each project is a concrete, tangible pleasure which visitors can feel when they enter the main gate of the property. ith an eye for renovations and restyling, it was clear that this could be turned into a very special building that would make not just a great home but also contain the firm’s office so that work, family and design could all jumble together in one outstanding property. The first job was to add a rear garden room to the house to serve as the family living room which was constructed with a glass wall to the garden and a walkable skylight in the ceiling to create a balcony patio
area above. Housing the family’s grand piano and a selection of armchairs, this room has a view out onto the sizeable garden beyond with its London Plane trees and herringbone, red-brick paved eating area. The full glass sliding doors make the join between outdoors and indoors feel virtually seamless. The impressive balcony area above gives the garden added height and drama and makes this very private outdoor space an ideal place to party and relax when the sun is out. Inside the house, great care has been taken to restore original features - such as the existing early twentieth

century paneling to give the space an authentic look. The main living area of this apartment has been painted in a bold blue on the walls and warmed with a lot of dark wood furniture and flooring. The bright white fireplace then becomes a natural focal point of the room and artworks are framed on the wall with large white borders to draw the eye in and tie in with the room. Full height double doors out onto a balconied garden area flood the room with light and accents of gold bounce this around the room. got a more neutral palette for the walls and flooring but bold accent colours are everywhere - from enormous original artworks hanging on the wall, to cushions and plants chosen to make the rooms pop with colour. In the family lounge seating is a priority with vintage armchairs, upholstered in Romo fabric, sit alongside a Christian Liagre sofa and a Chaise Longue designed by JD and upholstered in Nobilis Organic Wool. The window is dressed with fabric from Casamance and the bright orange lamps from Robsjohn-Gibbings brighten the neutral space.

As well as the beautifully designed and styled rooms, care has been given to the connecting spaces in this apartment. The beautiful curved staircase between floors in this apartment has also been designed as a statement in itself and not just a functional through-way in the building. The dark wood treads and banisters are dramatically set off by the white painted stairs, whilst a full height metallic artwork painted directly onto the wall gives the whole space an art gallery feel with real drama. The overall feel of this project is one of cool sophistication and sleek elegance. Renowned British Furniture Designer, Tim Gosling, is curating the main entrance at this year’s Decorex International. Embracing this year’s show theme, the roots of design, Tim will be constructing a spectacular exhibition called ‘The Heritage of Chair Making’ that documents the links between interior design, architecture and the exceptional heritage of British craftsmanship through the ages. Gosling comments: ‘The UK has some of the most important furniture collections in the world, but due to conservation, it is not always possible to put them on public display. Thanks to the support of the V&A and The Frederick Parker Collection, I am delighted to be curating an exhibition of chairs, which includes many of these rare and extraordinary pieces.’

P
eggy Prendeville bought this stunning Grade II listed south London chapel as a place to live and work in for herself and her two children. The challenge was to turn the unique building into a family home and work space without losing sight of the historic interior, or losing the sense of calm that the beautiful proportions and stained glass windows gave the space. This late Arts & Crafts building was originally created as the chapel for a women’s teacher training college. Later it was used as a seminary for Anglican
priests and eventually it became part of the campus of Goldsmiths College of Art. The previous owner had begun work on the conversion, most notably by hinging the bottom sections of many of the stained glass windows to create double-glazing, but as a listed building it was imperative to work closely with English Heritage and the chief planning officer of Lambeth to ensure that any renovations maintained the unique historic character of the property. Despite the previous work on the windows, the stained glass did not let in a great deal of light, so

Peggy began her transformation by looking to lighten the overall appearance of the interior of the building. Sanding the expansive existing wooden floors to a paler shade helped increase the reflected light, and any new timber paneling or doors that were required were constructed using maple which contrasted well with all the existing dark carved wood. The addition of a mezzanine at the alter end of the chapel was carefully planned, so that the position of the staircase did not obscure the view of any of the existing ornate marble floor. Upstairs on this mezzanine, carpet and a low-slung sofa provide a contrast to the cool, hard surfaces below. An extra 184 Bridge for Design Autumn 2016
mezzanine at the other end (where the organ loft had been) allowed for a small bedroom, a study, a gallery library, a bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe. The space above this became the master bedroom, incorporating a freestanding bath, a bespoke dark brown leather bed and the Eileen Gray Coiffeuse help to make it a grand but comfortable sleeping area. Designer furniture by Mark Brazier Jones, tall bespoke sofas, a bespoke coffee table, a rug designed by Peggy herself, the baby grand piano, an eighteenth century Chinese carving and a Chinese Wedding Bed, all blend with the original chapel fittings to make a very sculptural but peaceful ambiance. of ornate wood gives a feeling of calm and the light diffused through the stained glass adds a colourful and warm glow across the furniture. Throughout the chapel, Peggy created as much storage space as possible using clever techniques such as making many of the partitions between the new rooms bookcases, or including secret cupboards behind what looks from the outside like normal wooden paneling. To add an element of surprise, there is also a secret bathroom behind one of the wardrobe doors in the ground floor bedroom. The success of this building didn’t just rest on it being a good family home, but also on its success as a work environment and there are many great defined spaces to read, write or design. The triumph of this project is the ability to retain the historical interior whilst making it a functional and well-designed modern family space. ideon Mendelson didn’t ‘get’ the Hamptons when he was a young man growing up in Wetchester County. ‘All I saw was what the media told us about the allocation and phoniness,’ he says. ‘But my father really loved it here and he and my mother rented homes in a variety of locales every Summer. He taught me it wasn’t about the shops and movie stars, but rather the community of people who love this life.’ That version of the Hamptons is what the interior designer and his partner sought for their own family, including their 19-month-old son, Owen. Hoping for a home with a sense of history, the couple toured 35 properties before determining that classic cottages were just too small to accommodate
routine weekend visits from extended family and friends. With family taking precedence, they opted for a spec home in Sagaponack with a typical shingle style exterior and 5,000 square feet rooms in need of personality. ‘The challenge of spec houses is that they are built without furnishings in mind,’ says Mendelson, who has degrees from Columbia University (architecture) and the New York School of Design. ‘The scale of the rooms was large, so my goal was to make it feel as personal as possible. I also saw it as an opportunity to show how different design styles and periods could live together.’ His first furniture pick – a 19th century coffee table with a walnut plank top on a new wood base, established his penchant for merging old with new. mantel with a contemporary convex mirror by Hervé Van der Straeren. The theme continues in the kitchen, where an uber modern David Weeks lighting fixture is suspended over a kitchen table surrounded by reproduction Edward Wormley chairs from the 1950s. ‘Whether you put one modern piece in a traditional room or the reverse, it’s the eclecticism that keeps it fresh,’ he says. Mendelson’s distinctive style is about much more than pairing individual pieces – it’s about creating ensembles that embody a sense of comfort and surprise. ‘ We all have an aesthetic vocabulary we grew up with that’s familiar,’ he says. ‘But it’s the unexpected choices that give you something new to experience 202 Bridge for Design Autumn 2016
every time you enter these rooms.’ In the entry, where traditional Demilune tables complement grasscloth covered walls, it’s the Carlo Scarpa Italian glass lighting fixture that delivers the unpredictable punch. Throughout the house, Mendelson strikes a balance between the expected – slope-armed sofas topped with nubby linen in the living room – and unexpected, like snakeskin on the library ceiling and a Sputnik light fixture in the home office. While at Columbia, Mendelson also studied film and the cinematic influence is obvious in the way he composes a space. ‘ I am very conscious of how things

are framed,’ says the designer who placed an Elger Esser photograph on the living room wall to bring out the chartreuse in a wide-striped settee, and added a multilevel lacquered and bronze coffee table that almost seems to dance across the space. In some areas of the house, the stereotypical Hamptons beachy blues and sandy creams take a detour, thanks to Mendelson’s slightly unconventional style. The office wallpaper for instance sports a bold turquoise stripe, while the zebra-print staircase runner is olive. Colour and pattern also play a major role in cosying up the expansive master bedroom. ‘It’s difficult to make rooms this big feel comfortable,’ says the designer, who added seating at the end of the four-poster bed to scale things down. ‘Playing with various stripes on the chaise and drapes keeps the eye moving around the room in different ways, and the chairs are also the perfect height for a climbing station for Owen.’ Despite not always following standard rules of design, Mendelson’s home captures the Hamptons spirit, and more important, is a place his late father would have loved. ‘As a whole, there’s something comfortable about it,’ he says. ‘You might not understand everything at first but it feels like you’ve been here before. A COLOURFUL CANVAS

t holds a place of honour. At the centre of the house – where the staircase, living area and study meet – hangs the Fred Page painting that started it all for this art lover and collector, who grew up with it looming large in his parents’ dining room in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Today this homeowner’s private collection of more than 250 pieces from across the globe focuses on contemporary art. There are works in every corner, from the bathroom to the children’s rooms and the kitchen. It was also through art that he and his wife connected with decorator, Tracy Lynch, and her husband, artist Frank van Reenen. ‘He collects Frank’s work and commissioned him for a special piece when LEFT: Dr Zhivago, a tapestry work by Frèdèrique Morrel, presides over the quirky sausage-dog chairs from Jimmie Martin. The large canvas by Canadian artist Nick Lepard makes you look twice. Other works include a Louis Olivier collage on the wall, a small oil by Fikile Mghosyi (as part of the Spier Creative Block initiative) from Brundyn + Gonsalves, and Frank van Reenen’s Silver Dog sculpture. The server was custom-made by De Steyl cabinetmakers in George. the couple’s twins were born,’ Tracy recalls. ‘They got talking about what I do and he gave me a call.’ When Tracy first met with the couple, the house was still a concrete shell. ‘We immediately connected on how the house had to be a canvas to display the art,’ she recalls. As a point of departure, Tracy looked at the art collection and soon realised this was really what the house was about. She therefore decided to keep the furniture quite low-key and to introduce colour themes to tie everything together. 210 Bridge for Design Autumn 2016
‘When I first presented my mood boards with the colour ways and furniture layouts, they thought I’d gone completely mad,’ Tracy laughs. ‘I said we should walk through the house so that I could explain how it would feel.’ The owner admits that this was an area where Tracy added enormous value: ‘We never considered colour because we wanted the art to be the focus. I always thought the art would pull the house together, but it isn’t the same as a gallery where all the works are displayed on white walls to form

one story. The pieces I have collected do not have a single theme and are diverse in medium and subject matter.’ The owner’s discerning eye isn’t limited to art alone. He regularly buys furniture from second-hand shops, flea markets and finds online bargains. With interests in different industries, from clothing to design and property, he enjoys discovering unique products. ‘I recently found a beautiful tea 212 Bridge for Design Autumn 2016
set designed by Paola Navone for Reichenbach, an old German porcelain manufacturer,’ he says. ‘Instead of bringing home one set, I obtained the license to import the range.’ Other brands that find their way to these shores courtesy of his import business, Lusso, include tapestry work from French duo Frédérique Morrel and eclectic furniture from Spanish designer, Lola Glamour. He is also enthusiastic about local creatives: ‘I think South Africa

has an amazing talent pool of artists and designers that measure up internationally. We should be encouraged by this.’ He was very involved in the design of the house and worked closely with Gavin Mitton of Design 360 Architects. ‘I’m not the easiest client because I have my own ideas,’ he says. ‘I wanted the house to flow the way we live. The result bears testament to Gavin’s talent.’ Asked if he ever considered a career as a designer, the owner chuckles and muses that he could never start something from scratch but enjoys ‘working with the real creatives.’

aylor Howes lends its impeccable design flair to this exciting project - furnishing a stunning 10,000 sqft villa near Mougins in the South of France. Built in extensive grounds incorporating a football pitch, tennis courts, vineyard and a hotel sized swimming pool, there is no better place to escape the relentless noise of the city than this restful holiday home. Preferring a French provincial style, the fantastic light quality in the South of France lends itself to pastel tones and soft linens, with joinery pieces in pale oak and whitewashed timbers to encapsulate relaxed Mediterranean elegance.
Interior design was placed in the capable hands of Taylor Howes, whose project portfolio runs from private residences and boutique hotels to luxurious show homes. Taylor Howes’ brief was simple. ‘The clients have two young boys and wanted us to create a child friendly holiday home that was in keeping with traditional French style, but with all the modern amenities,’ says Creative Director, Sandra Drechsler. ‘We have worked on two projects for them previously, both located in London, so they had complete confidence in our choices.’ The house is every inch the family home, engineered towards growing children. Inside, a spacious ground floor playroom comes complete with a snooker table and bespoke sideboard, made with children in mind owing to its decorative handles fashioned into numbers. Proving that playrooms can also be an adult friendly space, Taylor Howes has added refined touches such as dining chairs lacquered in soft grey from Italian label Billiani and a super comfortable L-shaped sofa from London retailer Coexistence, where the family can watch television. Throughout the rest of the house, descriptors like stylish and sophisticated spring to mind thanks to tasteful furniture, luxurious fabrics from the likes of Fox Linton, Dedar and Altfield and a soothing 220 Bridge for Design Autumn 2016
neutral colour palette of sand colours that echoes the tranquility of its setting. The ground floor features honed travertine flooring throughout, starting in the kitchen where a centrally located La Cornue island unit steals the limelight. The kitchen leads into a separate dining room, opening out onto a sun-drenched terrace overlooking the swimming pool. Upholstered dining chairs from Poliform’s Velvet collection soften the look of the bespoke wedge dining table, which is lit by Kevin Reilly’s spectacular Altar pendant lamp. The teal colour of the dishes hung on the back wall is picked up by the scatter cushions in the impressive reception room, where smart bespoke sofas, are clustered around a bespoke bleached oak coffee table. natural sand colours helps make the space more welcoming, and the use of dark timbers warms it up. Sharing the ground floor is a guest suite comprising a living room, bathroom and bedroom, thoughtfully furnished with twin beds that can be pushed together or separated as desired. The talking point is a pair of Jackie bed heads by Collet Sandrine for French manufacturer, Pierre Fray, upholstered in rich aubergine linen to match the bed bases and flanked by bedside tables. The bedroom leads into the guest living area, dominated by a bespoke sofa upholstered in aqua blue linen. Continuing the coastal theme is a large shell print by Trowbridge Gallery that hangs on the wall. Upstairs is given over to a further four bedrooms, the most impressive being the master bedroom complete with a small terrace. This includes bleached oak floorboards, a bespoke bed complemented by a buttoned headboard and a bespoke sofa, made to the width of the bed. The crowning glory of this impressive house, however, is the cinema room, fitted with large, relaxing armchairs and sofa in dark tones. ith a stunning backdrop of the Eiffel Tower soaring over it and an abundance of natural light streaming in through its many large windows, this superb 350m² top-floor Paris apartment has been thoroughly enhanced with the elegant touch of interior designer, Stéphane Olivier. With its masterful use of detail, textures and soft colour, this apartment offers a space full of elegance and classic accents with a unique and timeless styling befitting of a chic Parisian flat. In this project, designer, Stéphane Olivier has created a beautiful scene full of harmony using a delicate and relaxing chromatic palette. The light oak floors and crisp white walls serve as a blank canvas on which greys and beiges were added. A classic theme is carried throughout the apartment, its manifestation especially noticeable in finishes such as the ceiling mouldings, the striking round columns and the old fireplaces. Additional furniture choices, such as the sofa in the spacious living area, where specifically chosen to fit around and continue this classic theme. Attention to detail throughout the apartment filled in the rest of the timeless and elegant scheme. Stéphane selected the fabrics used throughout the flat based on their textures, not their colours or prints. Silks, velvets and chenille were the go-to materials for this project as they enhanced the feeling of elegant luxury. Another area which was thoroughly considered was the lighting. Stéphane decided to use spot lights fitted with dimmers so the intensity of light could be altered; perfect for creating that romantic effect – after all, Paris is known as the city of romance! The top floor apartment has its own balcony overlooking the rooftops of Paris and the Eiffel Tower in an enviable view. To enhance the usability of this space, Olivier creates the ultimate place to enjoy a peaceful afternoon espresso with a chair made from logs and branches, accompanied by a classic marble and iron table and large planters to frame the vista beyond. In the expansive hallway, an Eros marble table designed by Angelo Mangiarotti displays an eclectic collection of coral and lantern collections, whilst drawing attention to the centre of the room and the marble flooring that surrounds it. A stunning brass and glass chandelier hangs above the furniture, adding glitz and further glamour to the room. window which, along with the large Mongolian sheep rug, adds a cosy and comfortable feel to the otherwise dramatic hallway. In the spacious living/dining room, a grand old white fireplace is the focal point of the living area. With a gilt-framed mirror above it to bounce round the light, the neutral room is highlighted with accents of character such as with the Platner chair and footrest with their geometric upholstery, a Magiscopes sculpture and work by the Mexican artist, Feliciano Bejar, and a series of round side tables made from fossilised tree trunks . The grey scheme is further embellished with a Toot sofa by Piero Lissoni, which sits on a delicate grey silk carpet from Golran. At the other end of the great room is the dining

area, which contains a Xilos table and Calipso of Maxalto chairs, again in the natural soft tones of the whole room to enhance the continuity. The kitchen is upholstered in a Wenge dark wood and white finish. A central island functions as a breakfast bar and also somewhere to work with its Bertoia Knoll metallic wire bar stools. Briefly breaking from the neutral colour palette, one wall of the kitchen had been painted in a delicate blue colour as a backdrop to host a collection of Fornasetti plates by L’Eclaireur. In the bedroom, a low wall construction which also makes as a headboard, separates the room from a dressing area with a wallpapered area containing an elegant 19th century Japanese screen. Golden accents can be found
around the room to further add to the beauty of the room, including the two golden lamps and the mirror-raindrops sculpture. And the large windows give further views of the stunning Eiffel Towel for an authentic Parisian panorama. Within an apartment painted in such chromatic tones it was important to introduce elements with visual expressiveness and personality to add drama and sophisticated accents to the space. From contemporary works of art and a collection of old chinoiseries that are seamlessly integrated into the flat, to the fossilised tree trunk side tables and nineteenth century garden stools that found their perfect indoor location, Stéphane Olivier has achieved this characterful touch which has given the apartment a traditional yet modern aesthetic – all in chic and elegant comfort. 232 Bridge for Design Autumn 2016

CABIN FEVER John and Bettina Routh built a rustic and elegant lakeside getaway in upstate New York as a place to enjoy nature and spend quality time with their family WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHS NAT REA

ohn and Bettina Routh have always loved the lakes of the Adirondack Mountain region of New York State. For 10 years the Routh family had been renting vacation homes on all the different lakes and they finally decided to take the plunge and buy their own. But they didn’t do it the easy way. Having seen many houses that didn’t meet their needs, they were shown a 20-acre piece of land with eight hundred feet of shoreline on Tupper Lake. Bettina decided that with her experience in interior design and architecture, she could take on the task of designing and building a new house by a lake - even if it was in the middle of nowhere. For half of the year, there is over two feet of snow on the ground around Tupper Lake and the lake is frozen solid. Any building has to be designed with the harsh conditions in mind. For example, roof gutters are unfeasible because the ice and snow would rip them off, so the house and roof design has to allow for heavy water run off without gutters. Friends introduced John and Bettina to a local builder and an architect, both of whom are well versed in the issues of building a house which can withstand the severe Winters. The architect even knew to design the steep road to the house in such a way that it could easily be ploughed in the snow and when the ice thaws, the road doesn’t become a torrential river. ‘We wanted to use a local architect who knew about local materials and who understood the local vernacular of Adirondack architecture,’ says Bettina. The house took about 16 months to build, starting with a new track from the road and a lot of blasting to clear huge rocks from the hillside and make way for this 8000sq ft house. They purchased the land in the Autumn of 1999, worked on the plans over the Winter and started cutting the new road the next Spring. The Rouths travelled up from Connecticut to inspect the building works and meet with the architect every four to six weeks, ‘we stayed in every dumpy hotel in the area,’ remembers Bettina. ‘The builders were amazing characters,’ recalls Bettina, ‘they worked all through the frozen Winter, some of them wearing shorts and Birkenstocks with woollen socks, taking the occasional day off to go skiing’. Forest Ledge, as it is now named, was finished in the Autumn of 2001. The first time they stayed at the house was during Thanksgiving at the end of November. All the new bedding and furnishings had been delivered and so there was a ton of cardboard. John decided to cut it all up and burn it outside. It was a windy day and the wood shed, which was nearby, caught fire. There was no hose or extinguisher so John had to drive to the hardware store to get a hose pipe, while Bettina worried that she didn’t even know the exact address to tell the fire department. The wood shed survived but was blackened. When the workmen returned the following week, they were puzzled by these crazy out-of-towners; ‘didn’t we know that the wood had to be taken out of the shed before you burn it,’ laughs Bettina, ‘we’re never going to live that one down!’ Bettina and John are very familiar with the Adirondack-style which hails from the late nineteenth century when wealthy New Yorkers built camps along the lakes of the area. They wanted to base Forest Ledge on a famous classic Adirondack camp called Knollwood which is nearby Saranac Lake and is known for its ‘twigwork’ facades. All the wood inside and out at Forest Ledge is pine, but some of it is cut in different ways, some has more knots in it, some still has the bark attached, some is finished smooth and some is cut very rough. Bettina wanted to have her own spin on the design. Whitewashing the bedrooms and hallways to lift the atmosphere, especially in the Winter when the days are shorter. The interiors have a traditional slant but there are surprises at every turn. Bettina has fused traditional core values of design with a local feel and has then added her own, more modern ideas to create a space that is both inspiring and relaxing and complements the extraordinary surrounding landscape all year round. The core of the house is the ‘Great Room’. Large stone fireplaces were built at each end, with the dining room placed at one end and the sitting room at the other. There is a large bay window in the middle and the west facing wall has a long line of windows overlooking the lake. All the other rooms lead off this room, so people are always passing through the Great Room - even the front door opens directly into it. This helps to make an imposingly huge space into a more relaxed, lived-in area. The steep slope of the land meant the house had to be very long, so at one end of the Great Room is the kitchen 238 Bridge for Design Autumn 2016
and the screened-porch and at the other end are the bedrooms. In the Winter and Autumn, the Great Room is the social centre of the house with the fireplaces and extraordinary views across the lake to the mountains beyond. ‘The only problem is that the room is so large, the heating bills in the Winter are enormous,’ regrets Bettina, and it has to be kept heated all Winter, even partially when no one is here, so that the pipes don’t freeze. There are two huge chandeliers hanging in the Great Room, which are made of very simple-shaped iron with hand blown glass shades made in Mexico. ‘Luckily we haven’t had to change a light bulb on the chandeliers yet - they are so high that when we do, we will have to put up scaffolding,’ says Bettina. In the Summer, the Great Room is often used as a dining room but the hub of activity is mainly outside by the fire pit and the lake. People tend to relax in the airy screened-porch room. ‘If I would change anything about this house,’ Bettina admits, ‘it would probably be to have a larger screened-porch, since that is where we spend so much time in the Summer’. wearing mahogany to withstand the changing temperature throughout the year. As another example of her stamp on the design, Bettina measured and taped squares then painted a black and white checkerboard pattern on the floor to give the room a more informal feel. ‘The builder was horrified when he heard what I wanted to do, but I think when he saw the results he understood what I was trying to do,’ says Bettina. The whole Routh family is very active and loves the outdoor life they have here. The lakes and mountains provide an endless source of activities from mountain climbing to water skiing in the Summer and in the Winter there are some of the best ski resorts in the Eastern United States and the kids can go skating and snowmobiling on the frozen lake. ‘In order to make this a special place for the family’ explains Bettina, ‘ we were adamant from the start that there would be no electronic media in the house; no TV, no internet.’ This would be harder to implement now the kids are all teenagers, but they tried the idea when they were younger and it has 240 Bridge for Design Autumn 2016
stuck. So the family spend evenings around the fire, playing games, eating and enjoying each others company and entertaining friends. Everyone’s favourite room is the upstairs bunk-room. It sleeps six and all the kids stay in there - even now they are older. It is part of the camping feel they have created and when large numbers of children come to stay, the ones who don’t get to stay in the bunk room feel very left out, so they even bring extra mattresses so they can sleep together in the same room.’ In the master bedroom, Bettina kept the walls and floors light by staining them with diluted paint. The four poster silver birch bed was designed by Bettina and built by a local carpenter, Chandler, who crafted all the railings and decorative log work around the exterior of the house. ‘He is a real artisan with wood,’ Bettina says, ‘ I asked him one day if he ever made furniture’. Many houses in this area have furniture made out of twigs and branches. Bettina doesn’t like to take a theme to its extreme but did want one or two pieces made in that style. Chandler was very resistant to using silver birch, he said they

would regret it because it peels so easily, but Bettina needed the lightness of birch. She’s happy she stuck to her guns, ‘The bark does peel off a bit but it has lasted seven years so far and we love it.’ The kitchen is almost as tall as the Great Room which gives the room a very spacious feel. Bettina and John didn’t go over board when it came to selecting choices for the kitchen and they used the samples presented to them by the local kitchen company. Bettina is a designer and could have drawn on some of her resources back home but wanted to keep the process simple. The kitchen island is so large that it is known by the family as the ‘continent’. It is made with butcher block maple, Bettina is not a fan of stone for counter tops, ‘it’s too cold on your arms’, she explains, ‘and wood is warmer.’ The surrounding wilderness here is breathtaking and the home that Bettina and John Routh have created here, not only complements the location, but adds another layer to the experience which they will be able to enjoy with their family and friends for many years to come. 242 Bridge for Design Autumn 2016

LIFE OF THE PARTY Rena Abboud turns a bachelor-pad townhouse in London into a dramatic space which is perfect for entertaining WORDS ROSLYN SULCAS | PHOTOGRAPHS SIMON UPTON

ena Abboud, famous for her themed parties, her larger-than-life glamour, her love of high fashion and haute couture, and her passion for colour, isn’t given to indecision. When she first saw her future husband’s chrome-and-blackleather-clad London townhouse, she knew exactly what to do. ‘We have to sell the house and buy something else,’ she told him. But Makram Abboud wasn’t having it. ‘We should make it work,’ he replied. The man who has made it work is Philip Vergeylen, who with his partner, Paolo Moschino, runs Nicholas Haslam Ltd., a division of the firm founded by celebrated British designer and man-about-town, Nicky Haslam. Vergeylen and Abboud have been friends for years, and she called him immediately. ‘I said, ‘tell me honestly, could I love this house?’’ Abboud recalls. Eighteen months and an extensive renovation later, the Abbouds are happily living in the house, in London’s smart Chelsea neighbourhood, with Rena’s two teenage daughters. ‘The great thing about Rena is that when she decides to go for something, she really goes for it,’ says Vergeylen. ‘She is incredibly impatient and very focused, so I would wake RIGHT: A sofa in the ground-floor study is upholstered in a Romo fabric, the floor lamps are by Nicholas Haslam Ltd. up every day to about 12 e-mails, full of ideas and photographs of furniture she had found. The renovation was done at Rena’s supersonic speed - seven months for the whole house.’ Vergeylen’s most audacious stroke was to transform the three story black and white house and its warren of small rooms into an open, airy and opulent blur of vivid colour. ‘The ground floor had five small rooms,’ Vergeylen explains, ‘and because I know Rena so well, I know how much she entertains; it’s not 8 people, it’s 50, or even 150. We had to open up.’ By digging out the basement and moving the kitchen and dining room downstairs, Vergeylen made the whole of the first floor into an entertaining space that offers both discrete seating areas and openplan expansiveness. The colours that dominate much of the ground floor are an eye-popping Arabian Nights mix of turquoises, greens and oranges, with hand-painted walls of bronzey green-blue set against ebonised oak floors. says, came from an unusual brief: ‘Rena handed me a peacock feather and said, ‘This is what I want.’’ Realising that it was important to have visual relief from the hot colour elsewhere, Vergeylen kept the entrance area in calmer shades of browns, creams and gold. ‘What is typical of our design style is that it’s about contrast,’ he says. ‘There are contrasts of colour, and also a juxtaposition of styles, from the 19thcentury copy of an 18th-century English sofa to a John Dickinson table covered with Middle Eastern antiquities.’ How to get from the entertaining area to the new downstairs dining area, 248 Bridge for Design Autumn 2016
however, posed a problem. Continuing the main staircase would have cut into the newly acquired space in an unattractive fashion. But having to use a staircase at the back of the house seemed, Abboud says, ‘a bit weird.’ Vergeylen’s solution was to design a stunning, sculptural, all-glass descent that feels like anything but a back staircase and also creates a brilliantly illuminated contrast to the saturated colours of the first floor. ‘After a few drinks, people are a bit panicked on those stairs,’ Abboud says with a laugh. ‘But it’s a big hit.’ In the newly created basement area, two large square tables can be joined, and a pair of chaise longues at the end of the room can be moved aside to make room

for extra tables when Abboud stages one of the themed dinners for which she is legendary. ‘With entertaining, it’s not about having a big space – quite the contrary,’ says Abboud, who was born in Baghdad and spent some of her childhood in the Persian Gulf, where her father founded the investment firm Investcorp. ‘People like to congregate, to feel close and tight. I’ve had 60 people seated for dinner downstairs. So what if you can’t cut your food at the same time as your neighbour!’ On the upper floors, Vergeylen’s principal change was to open up a small room and corridor to create the hot-pink dressing room of every woman’s fantasies, with specially constructed drawers for gloves, scarves, hats, and belts, colour-coded displays of jewelery in acrylic boxes, and handbags arrayed like artwork on shelves. For now, the master bedroom has a neutral palette. But Abboud has other plans. ‘Red,’ she states in a definite tone. How will her husband feel about that? ‘He’ll love it,’ she says confidently. 250 Bridge for Design Autumn 2016

ndless views of blue skies, merging into the deep blue of the ocean, was one of the main selling points of this utopian Portuguese villa, set high up on the Alentejo coast. Although the house itself was initially architecturally poor, clothing designer Nuno Benito saw past its faults to fall in love with the privileged view of the beach and lush vegetation of the surrounding farmland. To turn this project into his ideal holiday home, he began a reformation project designed to uncover all the property’s hidden beauty, whilst playing on the strengths of its enviable views and relaxed atmosphere that the Portuguese lifestyle dictates.
The main architectural changes came from deleting partition walls to expand and integrate the kitchen and living space into a cleaner, free-flowing open plan space. Whilst raising the roof gave the impression of a double height space and opened the room further still. The original garage and office were also converted into two guest bedrooms with their own bathroom, making it ideal for holiday visitors and family. The overall design of the property has been kept light and airy with neutral walls and floors, and strong accents of colour are used sporadically throughout the rooms in vibrant statement pieces such as purple rugs and the wonderful geometric print flooring in the master bedroom. With so much natural light

flooding through the large windows and full height glass doors, the house feels bright and warm, and there is a natural progression from indoors to the outdoors, which is a superbly furnished and inviting space designed to draw you outside to make the most of the Portuguese sunshine. The large outdoor pool is surrounded by wooden loungers typical of the region, and has quirky tree trunk tables arranged around them. Comfy homemade cushions rest on each lounger, inviting people to lay back and enjoy the endless views of countryside and beach beyond. A separate outdoor eating area is also set up with designer white Panton Vitra chairs set around a bespoke table made of boards from houses damaged by the 2004 tsunami. Huge palm trees punctuate the skyline and the views are truly breathtaking.

Inside the house Benito’s eye for style, and ability to mix designer pieces with vintage finds, is apparent throughout. The living area is dominated by a large fireplace and arranged around a low coffee table are a soft leather sofa in a burnt orange, some 50’s chairs from France, a 60’s lamp from the former East Germany and a Portuguese porcelain tiger acquired on a visit to a local antique shop. These are all set of by the vivid purple rug from the collection of Carpet Diem which adds a splash of colour to the room. The adjacent dining area is dominated by a large glass dining table, with wooden chairs upholstered in white leather. At the end of the room a matching wooden vintage dresser proudly displays designer pieces as well as antique finds, such as the Mercedes Seco lamp sitting beside an orange vase sourced from Germany.

The bathroom is a triumphant juxtaposition of designer style and rustic charm. The walls and floor have been made from polished cement giving a smooth and light-reflective patina. Whilst on the counter top a heavy stone sink has been roughly carved to visually stand out against the contemporary stainless steel taps and shower visible behind the sleek glass divide. In the guest bedroom, the bed head wall is dominated by framed works of art giving the room an art gallery feel. ROMANCE REDEFINED Enhancing the elegant features throughout the property creates a grand Venetian vibe

ill House Interiors were briefed to create a sophisticated yet relaxed scheme for a Georgian mansion on the borders of leafy Surrey. The client, a couple with three grown-up children who adore the signature Hill House style, wanted to update their home whilst retaining its stunning original features. The end result is truly spectacular - the designers have enhanced the soft, romantic feel throughout the property with a muted palette, fun details and tailored elements which give this period property a fresh, modern new look. Reminiscent of a grand Venetian interior, the entrance hallway has a delicate lilac colour scheme to beautifully contrast with the monochrome tiling underfoot. The space has been overhauled with traditional but light furniture to complement existing pieces, with new items given a distressed finish and hand painted in soothing mushroom tones. Adding timeless elegance, light fixtures and mirrors have elements of Venetian crystal. Adjacent to the hallway, Hill House have given the home a totally new dimension, extending and transforming the orangery to create an oasis where the family can relax or entertain. rambling countryside, accents of deep Bordeaux create an intimate atmosphere, and existing recessed cabinetry was refurbished to ensure the owner’s objet can be beautifully displayed. Hill House sourced sumptuous Hermès style fabrics for cushions and blinds, adding to the moody ambience of this classic contemporary space. Upstairs, every bedroom has the feel of a 7 star hotel suite. The master bedroom was totally transformed, with two smaller rooms knocked into one to create an extensive walk-in closet with bespoke dressing table. here is something of a fairytale quality to the life and times of Jacques Garcia. Take the story of Champ de Bataille, the Normandy Château that was once home to the Comte de Créqui and the Ducs D’Harcourt. Once upon a time, as a child, Garcia visited the house with his father, who had a passion for introducing architecture and the decorative arts to his son. Famously, the young Garcia who turned from this homage to Grand Siècle Style, faced his father and told him that one day he would own the place. Now he does. It is his crowning glory, a ‘laboratory of ideas’, painstakingly restored and reinvented ever since Garcia bought the Château back in 1992.
‘I wanted to buy it because I knew it was a very rich building, in terms of decoration and design,’ says Garcia, ‘and also I knew the furniture I wanted to put in would fit very well. But it had been a hospital for 45 years, with room after room painted in white. Only three rooms were still much as they should have been so I had the paint removed to find the original decoration. When those rooms were back to their original state, I designed the others in a similar way and that gave the house a sense of oneness.’ Partly open to the public and partly private, Champ de Bataille is quite extraordinary. But it is no exact, slavish recreation of seventeenth-century manners and aesthetics. It is more than that, bearing

the stamp of Garcia’s imagination and a relevance to today. It is not a museum with antiques and art pristinely placed and out on display, but a living home that is constantly changing, continually evolving. Garcia’s private quarters, especially, have a modernity to them, with contemporary art and furniture added to the more classical choices. Behind a door down one quiet corridor on the ground floor, there is a beautiful bammam; behind another is an exquisite swimming pool. ‘You need to add a touch of the twentieth century, a new vision,’ says Garcia. ‘For instance, I’m now working on a garden at Champ de Bataille that is a modern vision of a seventeenth-century garden. It’s not an exact replica of how it

used to be. It’s my imagination at work – designing on a historical basis, indeed, but I am developing something that can only be modern. We can never leave our own century behind.’ This glamorous combination of French classicism and a contemporary outlook characterises the majority of Garcia’s work and has taken him to the top of his profession. He is much in demand. There have been hotels, headed by the prestigious Hôtel Costes in Paris (opened in 1995 by restaurateur, hotelier and entrepreneur, Jean-Louis Costes) with its dramatic Italianate courtyard and opulent bedrooms with their individual reinterpretation of
Second Empire style. There are twenty or so restaurants to Garcia’s credit including L’Avenue, Le Fouquet, Ladurèe and La Grand Armèe in Paris plus Le Danube in New York. And public projects, too, such as the Paris Musée de la Vie Romantique. But residential work still accounts for half of his time, including high-profile commissions such as a Parisian home on the Place Vendôme for the Sultan of Brunei. He has made his fortune designing for the elite, not just in France but in America, Germany, Russia and Beirut as well. Yet Garcia’s upbringing was modest. His parents were shopkeepers in the Parisian suburbs, with Spanish roots on his father’s side. His father was a practical

also creative, cultured. He encouraged his son’s growing talent for drawing and an interest in the arts. They would note together the achievements of the great architects and tour museums. Garcia would often help his father clean out the attics of neighbours and friends, an opportunity to spot and trade antiques, and he developed a detailed knowledge of period furniture and objects. By the age of fifteen he was an active antiquary. From early on, Garcia knew he wanted to be an interior designer, and after school, where he supplemented his lessons by poring over books on antiques and architecture, he studied at the Met de Penninghen and then the École des Métiers d’Art. Even as he studied he was working successfully as an antiques dealer and buying modern art cheaply by conceptualists such as Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana and Josef Albers, selling them on as prices rose in order to buy

seventeenth and eighteenth-century decorative art. At the same time he was earning acceptance into a new social world, which would in turn provide him with employment, pleasure and a soaring reputation. His design career began with shops in the early 1970s, followed by hotels and then private homes. All the time he was developing an individual style: an emphasis on a solid, structural foundation to a home, to a space, then layers of fantasy, indulgence and comfort using elements of neoclassicism and orientalism, references from the grand siècle, the Second Empire and the Belle Époque, but with an insistence on fine craftsmanship. Towering in the background was the example of the grand architect of Versailles, the Superintendent of Royal Buildings, Jules Hardouin-Mansart. The two men have often been compared, not least because Garcia made a home of Mansart’s
self-designed Paris mansion on the Rue de Tournells, overseeing its rebirth. ‘I do identify with mansard, simply because for many years I lived in the house that he had built specially for himself in the Marais,’ says Garcia. ‘Then I was instantly accused of being a man of just the seventeenth century. They said, ‘he is the man from the grand siècle and the rest is nothing.’ But when I did the Hôtel Costes I was the specialist of Napoleon III and so on. I am not a specialist. I have a sense that leads me to think and reflect on the philosophy of a specific time, but that is something very different.’ ‘Even if for my own pleasure I have been attracted by houses from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it was because my collection drew me to them: it is easier to have a seventeenth-century home for seventeenthcentury art. But, as at Blenheim or Chatsworth, each generation adds a new layer, without damaging what has been done before.’ Certainly that is the feeling at Champ de Bataille. Even though the house may feel as though it has been untouched for years, in reality Garcia has truly made his mark. The closer you look the more you see and, despite the impression of cohesion, there is a mélange to the elements of many rooms, especially those less formal spaces that remain off limits to the public. In Garcia’s wood-paneled sitting room, for instance, sofa and armchairs are simply covered in calico to contrast with the more luxurious velvets of a chaise-longue and other upholstered pieces. A natural coarse-weave matting covers a terracotta blocked floor, while ranks of antlers and other hunting trophies give a country-lodge atmosphere to the room. Occasionally more contemporary pieces of artwork and furniture seep in; Garcia’s interest in design and art spans the twentieth century and beyond. A dining room next door is a hymn to the naturalist’s art, with a framed collection of herbs and fauna on the walls and a striking aviary motif, with birds staring down from the chandelier and iron perches, sporting on the mantelpiece, while frozen peacocks strut across the tiled stone floor. Here is evidence of Garcia as collector as well as storyteller, and the château is a haven for assemblies of fossils and crystals, butterflies and beetles, as well as countless pieces of furniture and tapestry amassed over decades. Look in Garcia’s study and you see ancient telescopes and scientific instruments, Victorian greetings cards and skulls cut by the blades of ancient anatomists. Upstairs are the more formal set pieces, both intricately conceived and epic TOP DOWN: The marble and porphyry bust on the ornate marble fireplace in the main salon is of the Emperor Nero. in scale. There is the large formal dining room, overlooking the parterre and gardens below, with a circle of twelve dining chairs that once lived in the homes of Louis XV. There is the great marble salon next door, overseen by a portrait of Mansart who gazes down from between the windows. Again every corner, every object has its own exotic history: an eighteenth-century throne that belonged to the maharaja of Jaipur here, a porphyry table upon a pedestal commissioned by Napoleon over there. Champ de Bataille is a life’swork and it will never stand still. And it resonates with the zest of Garcia’s sense of invention. ‘What I have best achieved is at Champ de Bataille,’ he says. ‘It is a reflection of what I consider this period to have been all about, what I think grand French taste is really all about. And I have always fought against fashion; if you simply look at what your contemporaries are doing, just copying what they do, you don’t really go anywhere. I prefer to discover the past.
