The ZAMAC Collection from Leisure Plan by Ego Paris includes a futuristic sunlounger which is designed in the style of a swing hammock - but more stable! A one-piece curved frame fixed to a ‘V’ shaped base forms a discreet support giving great stability, creating a feeling of floating in mid-air. The design exposes the whole structure so even en masse, the area around and under the ZAMAC is open, so avoiding the more solid look of traditional sunbeds. The aluminium frame is available in 23 powder coated colours. Slings can be in either polyester mesh in nine single colours plus four exclusive two-colour versions, or fabrics from the Ego Paris collections including Alcantara, an outdoor fabric with a distinctive modern abstract design. TELLING A DESIGN STORY Like an illustrator, designers bring the client’s story to life in inventive ways
C
lients want their homes to reflect who they are. In the former days of conspicuous consumption, that often meant filling the home with exclusive luxury items, custom furnishings, antiques, valuable artworks, and the like. Today’s clients are less interested in displaying their elite tastes and ability to purchase expensive goods, they want their homes to reflect their values. Telling the story through design begins with gaining a thorough understanding of the client’s sense of themselves, their values and aspirations, and any negative associations they want to avoid. How they currently use their home, and how would they like to modify or enhance that through a redesign will also impact design choices. Displaying collections and travel memorabilia may lead the design concept for some spaces. For example, a collection of photographs and mementos of family members and loved ones may be important for private spaces. The client’s values and preferences may inform the choices of the designer when it comes to selecting materials and furnishings. Many millennial clients, for instance, want products that are durable, sustainable, eco-conscious, resource-conserving, and recyclable or repurposeable. They also look for products and artifacts that reflect the values of the creator as well as their own - products that tell a story. Some clients may have a preference for sourcing locally in order to support their communities and local artisans, just as they prefer to buy locally produced foods. Similarly,

these clients favor items that relate to the local history and community values, as they reflect why they have chosen to live where they live. When selecting a design professional, the same criteria may apply. Today’s clients want to know your story and the story behind the brand. They are less interested in the credentials and portfolio than in a designer’s approach and philosophy. The best design today is neither a perfunctory fulfillment of the client’s wish list nor another iteration of the designer’s signature look, but a melding of the designer’s interpretation of the client’s story with their own story. Employing creativity and selecting unique furnishings gives the designer the ability to create the client’s story - an environment that embodies the client’s values and history within the context of the designer’s unique aesthetic. The result is a one-of-a-kind design that harmonises the visions of the client and designer. Think of an illustrator. For an artist to do their job properly, they must understand the story and the writer’s intent. At the same time, their contribution comes not from literally representing what the writer has written, but from enhancing the written word through her imaginative recreation of the story, its characters and its symbols. The final product is something greater than either the author or the illustrator could have accomplished alone. Like an illustrator, designers bring the client’s story to life in ways they cannot even imagine.

BATHE LIKE THE ROMANS Even when referencing the past, contemporary ideas need to be mixed in
S
tyles and trends come and go, but Italian design is an enduring force. Italy has generations of family-run creative brands that care passionately about craftsmanship and this vision quite naturally gets handed down. For Italian designers, creating bathrooms is a special experience. Nowhere is more deeply rooted in history than the bathroom. We owe so much to the ancient Romans, who were famous for their creation of public bathhouses and their love of bathing. Today’s luxury bathroom borrows from these historical ideas. Even in space-challenged urban areas such as London or Milan, we’re seeing homeowners wanting to devote more square meterage to bathrooms and bathing. Again we can go back to the ingenuity of the ancient Romans. Although the wealthiest families had their own private thermal baths, it is notable that they still visited public baths. Bathing in private was a luxury, but the chance to enjoy conversation and to eat and drink with your neighbours is the mark of a civilised society. And so it’s interesting that many of our customers are wanting family bathrooms and master bedroom en-suites that are most definitely designed for sharing – with double vanities and capacious shower cubicles –as well as small private spaces for each of the bedrooms. If you have more than one bathroom in your home, don’t feel that they have to match; a strong personality in each room is much more interesting. And if you’re concerned

that such an approach could be a little busy or confusing, you could always choose one common architectural element such as flooring to harmonise the various spaces. Parquet floors never fail to impress and there are so many wonderful finishes, patterns and woods, but – being Italian – we’re always keen on traditional marble. The entire image of the bathroom has changed in recent years and it is now a space for relaxation and rejuvenation with much more living space. There may be a dressing room, walk-in wardrobe, storage or perhaps a place to sit or read. It is also important to offer a choice of products that can be easily mixed and matched. A collection of bathroom products needs to be beautifully designed, but each piece should be carefully considered so that it goes well with any other; it’s almost like a haute couture fashion collection in that the bag and shoes are just as important as the dress. The Art Deco style is central to our aesthetic, but we’re just as inspired by the Florentine Renaissance, Hollywood glamour or Modernism. With its jazzy patterns, classic black and white colour schemes, streamlined linear look, bold geometric shapes and lavish ornamentation, Art Deco is particularly popular at the moment. So even when we are referencing the past, it is essential to bring contemporary ideas to the mix. It’s not about creating a pastiche of a popular historical period, but taking the best of that style and giving it a fresh twist that works for the present day.

nof Design has recently created an elegant, colourful and layered interiors scheme for a family home merging a recently-married couple’s tastes - classic French interiors and the geometry of art deco. The six-bed property in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey is part of a lakeside community located in the Manhattan commuter belt. The project also had an emotional element for founder and creative director Susan Knof, as one half of the client couple is a long-time friend. In addition, the scheme wasn’t just an interior for the couple, but also their six children from their first marriages, as well their newborn baby son. The interiors brief was fairly minimal, with the couple entrusting Susan to work with the property’s scale and dimensions while combining their personal tastes, including her preference for French furniture and his for the lines and geometry of art deco. ‘The answer was to treat both influences with a light touch,’ Susan says, ‘so that the scheme avoided clashes of style or any kind of obvious, themed look and maintained a cohesive feel throughout. The two preferences are present instead in material choices, such as the use of slick mirrored furniture, particularly in the master bedroom, strong geometric framed-furniture in some instances, glamorous chandeliers and distressed timber finishes.’ Both formal receiving rooms feature highly-polished existing timber flooring, with new overlaid rugs and stunning woven silk wall coverings from Philip Jeffries. A circular coffee table with a polished-brass frame and black marble top is the Camilla by OKL, whilst a narrow, Margo Scalloped Console against the back wall is in hand-forged steel with a gold leaf coating and mirrored glass top and was manufactured to bespoke dimensions to fit the wall recess perfectly. Elsewhere there are personal touches from the clients. The portrait of the reclining lady above the console in the living room couldn’t have been a better choice. Her green and blue outfit fits perfectly
with the scheme and the antique frame adds contrast to the room’s contemporary furnishings. The formal dining room has at its centre a Torano marble rectangular dining table with a white marble top and burnished brass base from Restoration Hardware. The eye is also drawn to the back of the room and its standout piece of furniture: a backlit, gold-leafed Preview - a gilt display cabinet with an LED-lit, ivory painted interior and four framed and glass-inset adjustable shelves, plus a striking scalloped gold pattern to the glass doors. The third major living space is a more intimate family room, which looks out onto the back lawns. The plan here had to be very functional to encompass all the family at leisure time and is centred around an enormous sofa - the Poliform Bristol Sofa designed by Jean-Marie Massaud and upholstered in Paris Avorio with integrated table in Cenere oak. ‘The slightly rustic flavour to this room was a conscious decision’, Susan explains, ‘so that it would work with the stone-framed fireplace, which was inherited and deemed too costly to replace.’ Finally, while in the children’s bedrooms the theme is fun, with film posters, toy baskets and playful letters and patterns, it is in the master bedroom that the nods to the couple’s influences are most strongly evident. There is mirrored-accent furniture including an Amelie Mirrored Console in hardwood with mirrored veneers, as well as mirrored bedside tables from Z Galleries. These feature hand-applied silver leaf and silver beaded trim, whilst the drawers are accented with brushed silver hardware. The diamond-patterned rug over the polished timber flooring was custom-made by Stark Carpets, whilst the linen-upholstered Bed Blanka has an antique whitewashed finish and a grey velvet RH Lous Bench ottoman at its foot.

n a small conurbation numbering just 7,000 inhabitants on the outskirts of Toronto lies the home of a pair of empty nesters, who called upon local firm U31 Design for their interior design needs for a home. Spread across several acres of land. The 17,000-square-foot mansion is one of a handful massive properties U31’s principal Neil Jonsohn designed for this couple and their family. The completely new build, containing mostly custom elements, took four years to complete from pre-construction to end product. While the exterior design of the house is rather traditional, the treatment of adornments makes the overall style contemporary. ‘We had lots of ceiling height which gave us the opportunity to play with different drops, creating all this drywall detailing,’ says Neil. ‘It was kept flat and simple, and all painted out. For example, we set the beams with wood board on the upper level of the ceiling on the diagonal to create interest.’ The most used place in the house, and also the last to be developed, is the garden room. This multi-use space features windows that can be folded back during summer so it becomes open air, enabling the couple to be inside while enjoying nature. The inviting room contains mostly plush blue furniture, accented by bold metal artifacts from the couple’s travels. In fact, the house is defined by colour stories. To connect the garden room to the dining room, Neil kept the palette of the ‘great room’ (or living room, which sits between the two) in neutral and soft greys with injections of bold blue and red. The warm tones are carried into the dining room through ruby chairs - a vibrant shade requested by the couple. The functional kitchen was zoned-out to allow numerous people to work at once. The island becomes the cooking station with prep sink, and the main sink is used for clean up, while the stone
surround behind the cooktop houses other areas including a bar, coffee station and wine fridges. This colour play continues in the dramatic entryway, which comprises of three marbles in shades of black, grey, and white. ‘As we developed the space, we began thinking about the space in 3D. Circular motifs were created on the ceiling so we ‘reflected’ them onto the floor. There isn’t much in the way of furniture so we used a variety of stones in order to keep the hallway from falling flat,’ Neil says. On the upper level, the couple each have their own master bedrooms connected by a sitting room with balcony. While one suite is feminine and light with soft blues, dove greys and whites, the other is more masculine, with walnut panelling and black and gold finishes on the arches and a vanity with shots of deep green and bronze-gold. ‘When you’re in the feminine suite, the white gloss lacquer, parchment detailing, and indirect lighting make the entire room glow,’ says Neil. ‘The husband however wanted a view of the back garden from his vanity, so we had to suspend the mirror in front of the window with integrated lighting. I also like how it’s relatively masculine,’ he adds. With a background in woodworking, Neil integrated the material throughout the home to bring an element of warmth. ‘Because we had painted out the background with soft neutrals, incorporating wood added a glow to places that needed it. Most of the carpets are custom or antique and the husband and wife brought only a few personal pieces along. ‘I visited New York with the clients to source period pieces and some of the upholstery - they were insistent on

sitting in the furniture before purchasing.’ When asked about his most cherished room, Neil is still undecided. ‘That’s a tough one - it all came together very well.’ He eventually decides on the wife’s study with its pale sycamore wall paneling, filled with books, art and light. But then he also loves the cosy family space and the spacious kitchen. Overall Neil says he’s pleased with the outcome. ‘Because we’d worked with the clients on previous projects, a friendship and trust existed that allowed

for ease of communication,’ he says. ‘They had opinions, but were open minded and understood the process enough to allow the consultants to do their jobs. I think the client and team can make or break a project, and we got lucky here. It was a dream job and a wonderful experience.’

he owners were looking to maintain the traditional style and optimise the views over the lake and gardens. Working closely with designer Jessica Brook and architect Rodrigo Moreno Masey, a high quality finish was achieved utilising a sensitive material palette and extraordinary attention to detail. ‘The design inspiration came from the original building itself - a French style replica Chateau - which had drawn the client to the property,’ explains Jessica. ‘History, integrity and story were important, and this needed to feed through into the interiors. A natural palette of materials was utilised, addressing and removing the less sympathetic elements of the 1980s conversion, while drawing and orientating itself around the aspect to the lake and forest,’ she adds. The extension followed the features of the existing design, seamlessly joining the new with the old, creating formal elevations visible from long, wide vistas. Despite the project’s scale, much of the existing fabric was retained to aid cost saving, and enhanced the project’s sustainability. Working closely with ECOSA, a protected bat habitat in the roof space was left undisturbed throughout construction and increased in size to suit their conditions. ‘An added aspect was having to accommodate the bats within the roof, which created potential programming issues, something MorenoMasey addressed through careful phasing of the roof construction works around the bats,’ explains Rodrigo Moreno Masey. The interior design features an open plan kitchenliving extension with large sliding glass doors. ‘This maximises the site, allowing the outside to flow inside, creating an area perfect for entertaining. The adjoining

scullery and boot room are designed around the client’s needs, providing a level of practicality to sustain the countryside household,’ says Rodrigo. Upstairs was extended and reconfigured to provide more space for the client and their young family. The rooms were designed to allow for flexibility, adapting as the family grows. Each bedroom has access to a bathroom with the nest sanitary-ware and finishes, where comfort is of the upmost priority. The master suite is revealed through a door concealed in a panelled wall, leading to the private quarters. Here, the client enjoys bespoke handmade joinery in the master dressing and an exquisite master bathroom featuring a freestanding bath and a shower hidden within one of the existing turrets.

The water closets are some of Jessica’s favourite rooms in the home, she says. ‘The smallest spaces are sometimes really satisfying. Bespoke finishes on the walls to the boot room WC created a cracked gesso finish, offset with a vintage reclaimed French garden table converted to a marble washstand and stone sink simple, but very effective!’ ‘We developed a close understanding and relationship between client and designer, working together to achieve a project of the highest quality.

K-based designers Bernard Interiors were recently commissioned to design and project manage the redevelopment of a luxury villa in Marbella, Spain. The focus of the client’s brief was to create a light and comfortable family residence with a contemporary European feel, but one that also allowed for relaxation and retained a space for hosting informal family and social gatherings at the same time. Founder and managing director Jen Bernard led the design team for the project. Having worked with the client on their primary UK residence, the team was delighted to be asked to redesign the family holiday home as well. Jen says she felt she understood the client’s vision for a luxurious, colourful and inviting place where outdoor living was as important as that of the interior. Making the most of the villa’s coastal location was paramount for the client, so the three main ground floor spaces - living, dining and kitchen - were combined and now connect to the outside terrace with views across the gardens to the sea. The client also required a workspace that was functional and didn’t conflict with the luxurious style of the interior. Jen made clever use of the hall space and created a recessed desk with concealed cupboards. The walls were covered with lacquered wood and a cream leather inset desktop creates the perfect working space. A bespoke brass framed mirror adjacent to the desk hides a cupboard for the AV equipment.

Outside, the terrace is multi-functional and works well as an open plan social space. Comfortable seating surrounds a bespoke coffee table where family and friends can socialise or watch television. The screen is concealed in a bespoke kitchen unit with motorised lift. The space houses everything needed including a fridge, freezer and storage for crockery and glassware. The garden umbrellas were made for Bernard Interiors by Santa Barbara Designs in the US and the company also shipped bespoke outdoor furniture from the US. Jen worked with local tradesmen the detail of the flush tile and plaster finish in the bathrooms was executed to perfection, for example.

Bernard Interiors worked with a local furniture maker on pieces they had designed, using materials that included highly glossed timbers, inlaid antique brass and leather, as on a bespoke cabinet featured in the dining area. Amazingly, around 80% of the furniture, doors and cabinetry was bespoke, while the rugs were commissioned from Riviere. Asked about Bernard Interiors’ favourite part of the project, Jen said: ‘We loved every inch of it, the way everything flows seamlessly makes for a calm,

comfortable luxury retreat.’ But is the client happy with the final result? ‘When the project completed in October 2017 our client loved it and couldn’t wait to take the family there. We know they really enjoy living there whenever they visit and it’s become a home from home.’

his West London property that was a family home for many years to Norwegian and Canadian clients was in desperate need of an overhaul. Colin and Iona Duckworth, the husband and wife team behind Indigo Design Associates, were commissioned as architect and interior designers to completely refurbish it, with the addition of a full basement to provide the much needed additional space in the form of a home office, games room, guest bathroom - and all the storage often so lacking in London homes. Iona managed to get around this stereotype though, she believes. The end result is far from typical, she believes. The couple’s brief was to

reinvigorate the house and give it a newer, stylish look that appealed to both their Scandanavian and Canadian design aesthetic, while providing a backdrop for their impressive art collection. To facilitate this, throughout the home colours were kept calm and soothing to let the artwork speak for itself, with extra highlights of richness from the furnishings to add interest, and the judicious use of antique mirror for glamour. Iona says that she looks for simple, elegant solutions when designing. For example, a work station was hidden behind sliding doors in the dining room, with a triptych of art recessed into each of the three doors, making this otherwise mundane storage

solution interesting when not in use. Also commissioned especially for the home was a great quantity of furniture pieces, including the Danish dining table and chairs from Pere Dansk, and the dining room’s lacquer and brass console. These make for a fantastic contrast when positioned in front of the exposed brick wall which was actually an idea that came from the client’s teenage son, who expressed an interest in design during the process. Moving through to the kitchen, the modern feeling space opens out to the dining room, with the two areas of the home cleverly linked by the same grey limestone floor. The use of white lacquer and stained wood units, black glass splash backs

and modern light fittings ensure the flow of all the ground floor spaces. The over-sized wall lights were sourced from Lampe Gras, while the blue leather window seat combined with silk ikat cushions provides a splash of colour, as well as a welcoming spot to sit. And, of course, it gives more storage! For other inspired storage solutions, in the sitting room, Iona and the team designed an interesting bookcase to solve the usual problem of how to incorporate a modern television into a stylish interior, which combines traditional tongue and groove with purple and white lacquer boxes for storage and to house the television, resulting in a simple, modern twist to a traditional idea.

Relaxation has not been forgotten in this room either. Two large, comfortable blue velvet sofas from Dudgeons sit elegantly on a silk rug from Christopher Farr Carpets in the main space. The bashed bronze and stone coffee table was specially commissioned in the style of Giacometti and works well with the room’s Danish leather chairs. ‘It always works best if we can mix modern commissions with mid-century or antique pieces to give a quirkier end result,’ Iona explains. Meanwhile, in the master bathroom there is an interesting mix of tones, featuring a white marble, walnut and black stone floor with a large walk

through shower located behind the double ended bath. And the storage solutions continue here too, with the addition of the freestanding towel ladder helping to stop the bathroom feeling at all claustrophobic. The relationship between designer and clients worked well, Iona believes. ‘It was a great project to work on. It’s always fun to work with clients with a keen interest in design, and after 18 months I think it’s fair to say we’re all thrilled with the result!’

he New York couple and ten-year-old son were regular commuters to France. Mario is the president of the fashion division of Puig, a Barcelona-based luxury group that owns designer brands. Anne meanwhile is a stylish presence on the New York philanthropy circuit, working with the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Understandably, their work took them to the fashion capital of the world all-too regularly, so they

came to the decision to forego hotel life and search for a pied-à-terre, and found a 2,800 sq.ft. apartment in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, dating from 1801. The first task was updating the wiring and heating and refinishing the oak floors- a process that took ten months. But in more stylistic terms, there was a desire to balance the French heritage with a more relaxed, American flavour. One feature that establishes that tone is the

It helped to blend seamlessly the extraordinary with the familiar, from boiserie in the library to Napoleoninspired fabric their son picked out to line the walls of his room. It’s all ‘exactly right,’ they say.

ven when they were first wed, a successful couple living in South Africa knew they wanted to build a villa in the picturesque Bantry Bay in Cape Town. The lawyer and his ex-model wife, along with their two children, liked the area a lot due in part to its central location in the town, but also because of its sheltered aspect and amazing views out over the Atlantic. Once they had found the right plot, the next step was to source an architect. They were recommended Antonio Zaninovic, whose work they did not know at first. However, after just one meeting they had a relationship that was bursting with ideas and

positivity. Almost immediately the couple decided that he was to be the architect to design their villa. However, the plot they had bought still held some challenges. The terrain was quite irregular, with a steep slope. In addition, there were large trees that had to be maintained there. The only option for the team was to build the house as close as possible to the back edge of the perimeter, which allowed for a garden at the front, as well as areas of shade which the couple requested. The shape of the plot allowed Antonio to design the house as something of a boomerang, with the windows facing the ocean. He decided to put the pool and the cantilevered terrace

on the first floor because it had better views. Inside, the idea was to project an organic, open construction that integrated perfectly with nature. Antonio chose to use concrete - clearly seen in the ceilings and columns of the main room - for its texture, and walnut wood for the floors for its warmth. The couple wanted to live in a relaxed way, with few divisions and in large open spaces so guests could move from one space to the other easily.

Another factor for Antonio to consider was the large number of dinners and parties that the couple organise, so a fundamental requirement was a connection between interior and exterior. Therefore, they opted for windows without frames for the living and dining rooms, which open completely in the hall and the kitchen. The main floor is a large space without walls that connects the dining room, living room, bar, kitchen and the pool. The hall is

ntiques dealer and interior designer Keith Skeel’s South African holiday home is full of exuberance and feels truly alive - as you might expect from someone in the business of sourcing unusual items from history and making rooms look theatrical. Behind the quite ordinary façade of a typical Bo-Kaap cottage in Cape Town you will find a world of contrast, of imagination and luxury brought to life. The space is extremely diverse, touching on everything from the outrageous to the dark, and at every step there is something for a visitor to feast their eyes on. ‘This house was a wreck when I moved in,’ Keith explains. ‘I think four families were living here.’ It’s all a far cry from the décor today. In the entrance hall, there are items to get you questioning and smiling. A hippopotamus’ jawbone hangs from one wall, setting a mischievous tone for the house. Structurally too, the home was reconfigured for Keith’s idiosyncratic tastes and desires. through the centre, with rooms opening off at different levels, and with terraces and trailing plants. The internal courtyard with its three-storey rock wall is in fact made of artificial rock, with water trickling down its side. The flat roof of the house is now a garden overlooking the harbour; to the west lies Table Mountain. Keith knew when he first arrived in Cape Town in the 1990s that this astonishing natural wonder would form some sort of backdrop to where

he lived. Ever theatrical, he saw drama in the rock, like something from a dream. His mother was born in South Africa, but Keith grew up in a London suburb, which quite possibly lead to his lifelong fight against dreariness. ‘I hate ugliness. Beautiful things don’t have to be expensive - fresh flowers, bits of junk done up, driftwood, perfect linen sheets,’ he confesses. Keith started ‘redecorating’ as a child. He removed the legs from kitchen cabinets and cut the ends off beds when his mother was out shopping. It seems

even from infancy he has had definite ideas of how he wants things to look. He says that today, people who pay him to work on their houses value his eye. He thinks they don’t want to be considered as having bad taste. ‘They’re successful in business, are captains of industry and so on, but they worry that their houses will not be up to scratch…’ he says. This keen eye brings the sense of drama to Keith’s own home. Inside you can find old French shop fittings, a collection of marble busts, bits of statuary, suits of armour, Victorian wheelbarrows and bicycles,

garnitures of pewter, giant shells and varnished tree roots veined with burnished gold, to rooms papered entirely with maps. The designer confesses to a love of wood and natural forms, with many types dotted around the home. The floor is made of railway sleepers that have been sliced into boards. However, this is not some heavily clichéd home. There are brave, bold statements everywhere, as you might expect. There are also those artificial rocks, old tree trunks, outrageous Gaudiesque plastering and floors made from shards of china. It feels at

times like a film set, in fact. Rather than pile on the colour, Keith has let the texture speak for itself throughout the home, combining softly grained wood with stone, pewter and old fabrics, such as a Napoleonic quilt in a palette of rich, dark shades. The house is functional too however. Keith throws his dressing gown over an old statue in the bathroom, but the showerhead is state of the art. Kitchens are workable, although machinery may be hidden behind antique panelling.

Keith recently decided to open a small shop in Beccles called Eccentricities, and within a few months had also opened his Distinctive Interiors store. He concludes by admitting he has a motto for his homes and work. ‘Never be afraid to like something,’ he says. ‘If you don’t want to play it safe and you like a bit of fantasy, I’m your bloke.’

CREATING A
BALANCE A desire to avoid the staid formality often associated with the creation of rich, sophisticated spaces drove interior designer Michele Plachter on a recent project
‘T
his home is located in the historic area of Philadelphia. My team and I wanted to honour the traditional bones of the home yet inject a more youthful appeal,’ designer Michele Plachter explains. As a perfect example, all the library millwork was newly installed. ‘Our client initially wanted it to be stained,’ says Michele. ‘However, with some visuals and a gentle push, we convinced them to go bold with high gloss lacquered paint in a custom blue colour with a matching blue grass cloth.’ The result was a stunning, if unexpected space. Michele’s approach is also evident in the master suite. ‘We mixed soft colour palettes and classic lines with glamorous lighting selections, pops of cobalt blue and a graphic fireplace screen to create balance,’ she says. Most of the furnishings were customised for the project. ‘Luckily for us, the gorgeous library chandelier was present from the previous owners and is believed to be original,’ she
boasts. Also key to the look is the art above the library fireplace, which is really unique. ‘We give our art placement and recommendations a lot of thought. Good quality art elevates well-designed interiors to another level. Good art curation and interior design need to go hand in hand.’ The relationship between Michele and her many clients could also be described as one that goes hand in hand. ‘We encourage them to move outside their comfort zone and sometimes that requires hand holding. We like to call it ‘educating’ our clients to ideas and pieces they’re not familiar with. It’s what creates the wow factor.’ ‘Our favourite part of the project was balancing the clients’ request for traditional aesthetics and being given the creative freedom to insert a sprinkling of pizzazz,’ she says. ‘It was a perfect balance of how traditional and modern can blend beautifully when thoughtfully orchestrated.’

FOR THE LOVE OF ART This Grade II listed property in Yorkshire is filled with inventiveness, character and life
I
n the Yorkshire village of Boston Spa stands a grade II property owned by a couple who called in interior designer Vanessa Rhodes. The challenge was to incorporate contemporary furnishings without detracting from the building’s heritage. Artwork played a key role - three pieces came from Italian artist Marco Giordano, who flew in to hang his canvases. A home automation company was commissioned for lighting, sound and furnishings, resulting in a lighting plan based around the furniture and artworks. A mix of vintage and commissioned pieces evoke the spaces evolving over time. Burnished gold and copper, rich colours and statement art create a home with an attitude reflecting the personalities of the owners. Vanessa and her team worked closely
with cabinet makers and upholsterers for pieces, including cocktail cabinets, benches and beds. The drawing room was, Vanessa admits, the largest she’d worked on. ‘The only way it was going to work was to give furniture its own identity by sourcing sofas and chairs with unusual shapes with opposing colours and patterns,’ she says. The four floors took a year to complete, resulting in a home representing the client’s love of art and handcrafted furniture. ‘It’s filled with inventiveness, character and life,’ Vanessa concludes.

RICHMOND PENTHOUSE
Benefitting from gorgeous views and natural light, Rebecca Hughes was asked to give the home a facelift
A
s with many of the great properties in Richmond, West London, a penthouse designed by Rebecca Hughes Interiors overlooked the river. Already benefitting from gorgeous views and benefiting from plenty of natural light, the task was to give the home a complete facelift, including a full renovation of the bathrooms. This meant paying attention to the existing layout and designing and installing a brand new kitchen. The clients placed very few restrictions on Rebecca for the project, although they needed it to be completed quickly. ‘The property had been vacant for some time and they asked us to design and renovate within a matter of months,’ she says. ‘We worked closely with a contractor and joiner who we have a strong relationship with and thankfully had everything designed, built and installed within four months.’
Other challenges in the home were more to do with the building itself rather than timing. ‘In the Entrance Hall we had an awkwardly positioned radiator. Rather than putting a traditional cover in we worked closely with Tyson London to create something bespoke,’ Rebecca recalls. ‘It was a lattice antique bronze design with fabric wrapped panels the same colour as the walls and a beautiful marble top.’ Rebecca says her favourite part of the project was the end result in the bedrooms, which she calls fresh and inviting. ‘We tried to make each room unique with different shaped headboards. The guest headboard elevation even had fabric covered walls to aid the element of luxury,’ she explains. The end result here and in fact that of the home as a whole - was, she says, ‘very light, contemporary and clean whilst incredibly homely.’

TOUCH OF THE ORIENT Eastern culture was subtly combined with the laidback essence of the French Riviera
F
ar from being a holiday home, the designers of a villa on the Cote d’Azur in Nice were tasked with capturing its dual purpose, as it was a Summer home and a venue for private gatherings. Designers AB Concept’s aim was therefore to design a social gathering place while still keeping enough privacy for the family. Their design was inspired by Eastern culture, a personal interest of the client, but this was subtly combined with the laidback essence of the French Riviera. Putting the concept into action went smoothly, due to consistent communication between the client and designer. The villa’s owner was appreciative of Chinese culture and aesthetics, and was in tune with the idea of luxury design. The majority
of the furniture was custom designed and produced bespoke for the client - a dining table, complete with a pure mother-of-pearl tabletop, was made by hand. Other pieces were purchased from Italy, while others were from the client’s collection. AB Concept reveal that their favourite part of the project was in fact something outside of the villa, the view of the Cote d’Azur. They tried to incorporate the vistas into the design as much as possible, the designers conclude.

A LANDMARK REBORN Jasmin Reese Interiors’ brief was to give this period home a more modern makeover
W
henever you renovate a home, the responsibility can seem huge. If that home is something of a heritage piece, with its own story to tell, then it can feel a double-edged sword. You might be concerned about preserving the history of the home, or unsure about how to handle any unique problems you might experience - costly, complex or otherwise. This wasn’t the case with one such home dating from 1892, located in Evanston, which was bought by a family that found it to be awash with period features and its own lengthy history. In this case, though, they were not put off. In fact, they felt a sense of obligation to the building, and wanted to get things right and preserve its elements, becoming something like its carers in the process. They embraced the opportunity to make their own imprint on the home, making respectful, if still distinctly personal changes. The home had at one time in its history belonged to Louise Brockaway Stanwood, a renowned figure in the local community who was the first woman to hold public office in Evanston. This struck a chord with the family, who have three young girls. Interior designer Jasmin Reese, founder of Jasmin Reese Interiors, was enlisted to help with the redesign of the home, and her list of boxes to tick included a host of modern day adaptions, with the home having only previously been owned by six tenants. The family were recommended the designer by a friend, and made it clear from the outset that the look, and, perhaps more importantly, functionality of the home, were the two most important elements of the renovation for the client.
When it came to design, the family’s love of the quirkier side of design helped Jasmine enormously. Taxidermy pieces features heavily on the first floor of the home, but elsewhere the mood is more subtle. The sitting room is finished with a high lacquer treatment with Fine Paints of Europe, carried out by Minnihan Painting. The library-style room is full of turquoise tones, fuschia silk panels and a chair sourced from Madrid and other luxurious textures. There were some layout changes to the home, however. The third floor saw the most change, and it now boasts more space, with a distribution of rooms such as the sauna, storage and office now spaciously spreading down to the second floor as well instead of being cramped on one level. Such adhered to the family’s desire for functionality, bringing a new sense of space to one of the key rooms (the master bedroom) and cutting back on clutter in the process. Jasmin and her clients also added a secret door that led to a storage closet which previously was a sauna. The family are ecstatic with the changes but believe they’ve managed to retain the heritage of the home at the same time. The space has become more functional, but not at the expense of fixtures or features. It feels more welcoming, cosier even, and yet remains respectful of its history - and the history of those who have lived there. The new clients are simply next in a short, but significant line.

SLOW & STEADY WINS Fiona Leonard used a serene and coastal palette to reflect the clients’ love of the sea
I
t took a consultation with Fiona Leonard before Darien home owner Christine Schoenrock really began to get a sense of the direction she felt the home should take. It was decided to take a slow pace, tackling each room one by one, gradually uncovering the perfect home that lay beneath all those past wrong decisions. They started with the dining room, where Fiona created a serene, coastal palette that reflects the family’s shared love of the sea and their favorite pastime, beachcombing for sea glass. Fiona was tasked with making the home suit all comers - to reconcile Christine’s desire for a light, white aesthetic while maintaining the home’s status as a neighbourhood stomping ground for friends of the family’s seven-year-old son. To reach this goal,
she used performance fabrics throughout to merge the pretty and the practical. Throughout the home, the essential look was brought back to Christine’s favorite blue and white colour pairing, infused with the occasional orange burst for added punch. The space is finished with art and found objects Christine has curated herself. Next for the home, Christine and Fiona hope, will be shiplap walls in the mudroom bath and more projects in the future. Quite a progression, when you consider the steady evolution of the work.

INSIDE WOOD WHARF The large Loft apartments offer unparalleled views of London and generous terraces
I
n the heart of London’s business district, a landmark Canary Wharf development has been christened Wood Wharf. Within that, One Park Drive houses 483 apartments divided into three types - Loft, Cluster and Bay. The Loft apartments, featuring interiors by Bowler James Brindley, are some of the largest. Across eight floors, they offer unparalleled views and generous wraparound terraces, framed by fluted terracotta panels sheltered within the building’s form. Bowler James Brindley embraced the apartments’ curves with sliding panels and glass walls. Timber and warm tones are a mainstay to give the space a homely ambience .The open plan kitchen design is a reaction to Herzog and de Meuron’s cylindrical
architecture, referenced within the sweeping walnut veneer bulkhead that draws you through the apartment into the master suite. The stunning views are reflected in surfaces and cabinets, while the concrete flooring helps create the artistic atmosphere of a New York loft apartment. Finally, the freestanding shower in the master bathroom with its fretted pattern again references the building’s architecture, while the walls - clad in intricate mother of pearl - are a further nod to it.

LIFE ON THE RANCH The family wanted a place to spend Summers working and to spend time together
A
new-build holiday home recently designed by interior design company Lonni Paul Design needed to tick all the boxes. With a square footage of just under 5,000, the getaway space belonged to a family of three from Los Angeles. Boasting six bedrooms, the family explained they wanted a place to spend their Summers working, while still spending time with their ten year old son. The location of the new home fitted the bill perfectly. Gozzer Ranch had an enormous range of facilities to keep the family entertained, with boating, swimming, social events, kids’ clubs and events, concerts - everything they could possibly want. In addition, there was an annual Summer
camp which the parents could attend too. Their extended family and friends visit the home to join the family on different weeks during the Summer, and to prove the place is a home from home, they also spent their first thanksgiving there last November, although family dinners can be taken at home or at the clubhouse on the ranch itself. Inside the home, there is everything from a pizza oven and built in spa, to smart house technology and even a crystal Ralph Lauren antler chandelier.

WEEKENDS BY THE SEA Sarah Ward’s 1830s Farmhouse was redesigned to become her comfortable retreat
D
esigner Sarah Ward knew she wanted her own 1830s farmhouse in Aldeburgh, Suffolk to be homely. As her weekend home, she needed something that was comfortable and could be used as a retreat. The seaside home is something of an anomaly in the area. Where once rolled acres of farmland there now stand new homes, with the farmhouse the only hint of the previous era in which it was built. For the refurbishment, Sarah says the biggest challenge was the ceiling height. ‘We had to remove windows to get furniture in, but we managed to get some quite nice scale furniture which enhances the space,’ the designer explains. Sarah opted for warm colours and tones, in addition to using her art collection as a foundation. ‘We bought
lots of antiques and mixed them with newer pieces. Everything we chose was to tie the art into the rooms and give a sense of balance,’ she adds. When it comes to her favourite space, Sarah says it’s definitely the TV room, with its bright yellow leather armchairs and art from Vietnam. There’s also a vintage leather sofa from Lots Rd, which she loves the scale and comfort of. There’s an antique Chinese bed which forms the coffee table. ‘As the designer and the client, I’m very happy with the result,’ Sarah concludes.

arlville, Maryland, with its beautiful bays and luscious rural landscape, is the wonderful setting for a home that was a project for the team at Balongue Design. It was the historic building’s beautiful rural setting, coupled with fantastic views of the Chesapeake Bay, with a unique historic details and façade, which heavily influenced the design. The interior renovation focused on highlighting

the stunning views to the exterior but also on ‘remaining true to the structure’s history,’ the design team explains. As a direct result, the colour palette embraces vivid variations of blue and green to complement open vistas of sky and trees just outside the home. juxtaposed onto classic furnishings bring in a fresh and lively spirit to the interior spaces. This element of relaxation matched with stylistic power was very much the inspiration and brief for the project, the team at Balongue Design explains. However, such a sense of calm and ease was occasionally hard won. Throughout the work on

the project, there were challenges to be overcome, with many arising due to issues with the site itself and the conditions. For example, elements that are often inherent in much historic renovation work - unexpected water leaks and structural issues presented themselves throughout the renovation of the home. The designers and their

team made strategic decisions in this case, to parge walls and implement historically accurate details such as faux pilasters and beams to mask the required drainpipes, structural supports and new mechanical ductwork. And yet, to the observer’s eye, all the results appear to have been period and historically sympathetic to the home. Yet the designer’s main challenge - and ultimately favourite part - of the project was the development of “a vibrant palette that allowed the structure

and views to come alive and stand out as the main attraction,” they say. Understandably, as a result, the client was justifiably thrilled with the finished home and is thankful for the thoughtful preservation of, and opportunity now to relax in, their ‘new’ sanctuary.
