THE BEAUTY OF SIMPLICITY Streamlining the chaos begins in the home

C

onscious Minimalism is a topic incredibly close to my heart, it has shaped my entire design career and plays a part in my day to day life. In many ways this need for light, simplicity and minimalism took root before I had even begun working in interior design and architecture. Growing up in Australia I was surrounded by open spaces, vast skies and an indoor/outdoor lifestyle – all of which greatly influences the country’s interior design. The Australian culture and environment is pervasive in its interiors and architecture, where homes frame the landscape and the interiors always seamlessly connected to nature. There is a certain serenity that comes with natural landscapes and a slower pace involved with this outdoor-centric lifestyle. Today’s world is fast, full of instant gratification 16

and shortened attention spans, perforated by noise and the result of this is a growing inability to switch off and find the quiet. We are in a permanent state of stimulation, walking around in the street, glued to our phones, catching the tube and neverending group chat notifications can feel like the speed and volume of life is only escalating. My belief in the beauty of simplicity in the home has never seemed more relevant than it does now. There have been growing calls for a slower pace of life, be it temporary or permanent people are in pursuit of stillness. The slow food movement, rising popularity of mindfulness, meditation and yoga and demand for holiday retreats (health farms, yoga or otherwise) are all indicative of this search for the slow-down. Our homes have always been our retreats but for a long time luxury and design has been dominated by the loud, and intricate design came to

It reduces the volume but increases the sound

be synonymous with opulence. I believe that the calm we are searching for in detoxes and retreats should begin with interior design and that conscious minimalism is the key to this. Beautiful simplicity within interiors requires a lot more consideration and there is far less room for error as materials, lighting and lines all stand out much more boldly on a less cluttered canvas. This thoughtfulness is the very essence of contemporary minimalism, or at least my contemporary minimalism. It is my belief that designed simplicity does not lack it lessens and the best way to convey this aesthetic and its emotional implications is that minimalist design ‘reduces the volume but increases the sound quality.’ We saw how well people responded to a clear emotioninteriors link when Hygge took the internet by storm almost overnight- this sense of ‘wellness and cosy contentment’ being fostered by interior design and decor resonated strongly with people all over the world for good reason. Too often we forget that streamlining the chaos in our lives begins in the home, conscious simplicity as an interior design movement allows us to do just that and two of the great ‘minimalists’ Vincent Van Duysen and Tadao Ando have been pioneers. Van Duysen describes his design aesthetic as the ‘art of living’ – which highlights something too often forgotten in design – the ‘living.’ Ando’s recent residential complex in New York featured a stunning penthouse apartment showcasing his signature contemporary minimalism. The penthouse interiors proved that conscious minimalism is not just for large scale commercial projects but has a real place in the residential space- it merits being really ‘lived’ in. Simplicity, authenticity and calm are the new luxury and bringing the essence of a retreat into the home is at the core of my design philosophy. My studio is currently designing a 33,000 square foot project in Dubai Hills that showcases quiet, thoughtful design throughout. We are also working on a Notting Hill project that features bathrooms reminiscent of a spa retreat, and conscious minimalism at the core of my design style is evident all throughout our residential St. Johns Wood project. I am so excited to begin 2019 as I mean to go on, detoxing stress through thoughtful design in the home!

ART SHOULD ENHANCE

Pay attention to the feeling that art will convey

F ©jane beiles

BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SUMMER 2019

rom a design perspective, we are often asked to incorporate art into the space we are creating for a client. As a starting point it is so important to understand the room’s purpose. You can determine the type of art that will enhance the interior space. The scale and shape of the art is drastically important to a piece of furniture, especially if the art is sitting above a large credenza or a hall chair. It is key to pay attention to the feelings the art will convey when entering a specific room as well as how the room affects the arts surroundings. Today, I am seeing more and more three-dimensional art in spaces. Think mini sculptures. My current obsession is with Jennifer Prichard who is doing ceramic and sculptures on walls and ceilings. I love large scale sculptures as they are transformative and are done as part of the overall design process which makes it cohesive. And as most clients want to be unique the idea of having a wall sculpted by someone like a Peter Lane can serve two purposes: wallcovering and art. It is installation art in a home residence which is really cool. There are as many trends in interiors as there are in fashion. We currently are seeing a lot more interest in ceilings, stairways, etc. so hanging art such as mobiles by Ariel Alasko are a way to incorporate art, color and texture at the same time. Artists like Jose Esteves who was inspired by

Invest in a photograph that is truly thought-provoking

About Christina Roughan

F

or more than two decades, Christina S. Roughan has been practicing the craft of interior design first in NYC and now running her firm in Fairfield County, CT with an office in New York as well. Over that period, she started the business Sullivan Interiors, expanded it got married then created Roughan Interiors which she runs today. Prior to that she held senior level design positions at Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger enabling her to hone her design and management skills. Roughan’s work is marked by its timeless sophistication, its mixing of mid-century, antique furnishings and select objects and art, and its deft combinations of texture and subtle colour. “I always say that my favourite part of the job is the installation, when everything comes together and we bring a home to life,” she says. “But then my other favourite part is seeing the big smile on the client’s face when they see it for the first time. That is one of the happiest moments.” www.roughaninteriors.com

BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SUMMER 2019

Calder creates sculptural lighting that is a balance between art and function. Photography is another way to bring art into home. I am a big believer in purchasing photography that moves you as an individual. My first photograph was an original Slim Aarons Kings of Hollywood image at the Stanley Wise Galleries in the mid 90’s. Though I have purchased many more pieces since then, it still remains my favourite piece. I would invest in a photograph that truly is thought provoking and you will talk about years later. This piece has the ability to transcend the test of time and match virtually any interior space – a good selling point to clients, too. In creating an aesthetically pleasing interior, I like the eye to move horizontally across a space. This is where layering of art can be effective. Artists like Marie Beckman create vases that are sculptures in and of themselves and when placed on a coffee table in front a of painting, they add depth and dimension to the surroundings. Hallways used to be dead space, now they can be used as a uber-chic gallery. Think low bench, books under, sculpture on top, a painting above the bench, all on a hand dyed rug. A simple art filled space. Lighting is almost as important at the art itself. Think of Lobmeyer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It in itself creates a conversation. I first take into account any of the natural light in the room and then go from there. Picture lights used to be so traditional and boring now brands like Urban Electric and Hector Finch are creating cool lights that work in more modern settings. Also, I like to underlight pieces, especially sculptures. If we have museum quality art, we then have a lighting designer to really make sure the piece gets its due. As each client is unique from taste, style and budget we approach the art in the same manner. And if a client has current art that you both agree upon then you should work with what you have as a starting point and move on from there. One should examine the space where art is being used. Art is no longer just a canvas, it’s a sculpted wall, a bronze light fixture, or an antique mirror. A piece that is special and inherently moving. An object that speaks with all objects in a room and enhances its beauty.

n a charming pastoral setting on eight acres of simplicity and serenity, the Redding Garden in Connecticut provides something for everyone and hours of enjoyment, writes Shelba Cornelison. From the first glimpse of the property through a treelined lane and onto the red gravel-surfaced parking court, the rolling terrain is breathtaking. Divided into a dozen individual garden rooms, this entire area was designed to reflect a simple motif. Its contemplative and beautiful 70

character lends itself nicely to entertaining as well as a simple respite from the hustle and bustle of the New York city life. Favourite highlights of this lavish complex include the wisteria-covered terrace that is shaded by a 75-year-old copper beech tree. The outdoor kitchen and pizza oven, while nicely concealed behind a large outdoor fireplace, are ideal for large or small gatherings. With its wonderful views from almost any angle, each garden room offers expansive vistas into the distant hills.

A much favoured spot in the summer is the large swimming pool area and formal fountain garden set in a picturesque landscape surrounded with meadows, woodland gardens and many lawns. Eight water features serve as focal points throughout the various areas, and art sculptures are used extensively to great effect. All walls are built from stone found at the site. Locally cut and milled white oak is used in each of the arbors. And adding its own special touch, Bluestone was sourced from a nearby quarry. Most importantly, local craftspeople provided their many talents with the construction process. Native plants are used often, adding local colour and allowing the garden to fit beautifully into the natural gathering spot of the always lovely Connecticut countryside. photographs rob cardillo

hen Anouska Hempel took on the design of this new private residence in Singapore, the direction of the project asked of Anouska to recreate a glorious mansion with the style and atmosphere of retro-Singapore. Adhering to the traditional thinking that all houses should be black and white on the inside and outside, this inspiration brought this Singapore home to life. From top to bottom, there was to be the traditional black and white concept from the slate black roof to its wall hangings and even the window treatments. The collaboration of this luxury project saw Hempel working alongside Grant Marani and Paul Whalen of Robert A.M. Stern Architects, the renowned New Yorkbased architectural firm behind some of the city’s most iconic buildings and residences. This first collaboration easily set the stage for success. The architectural language between the two entities was open and inclusive and fully in tune with each other. “We take great pleasure in architecture’s capacity to create drama of daily life,” said Stern. Built in the style of the original black and white colonial house, this bewitching residence encompasses a rich and layered design which combines British Tudorbethan, Arts and Crafts, and Art Deco elements. “There’s a happiness and a magic throughout,” says Hempel. Large, wide stone steps of 1.5 meters lead up to the main entrance, flanked by demi-lunes of lavender on each side and the impressive black door opens out and into another world. Immediately we see a stair rotunda that offers axial views of the courtyard and a raised verandah pavilion beyond. Directly off the rotunda, a gallery leads to the formal living room and equestrian-styled polo room as well as the formal dining room, family room and kitchen. The master suite, children’s bedrooms and a large entertainment room – topped with a clerestory lantern window – rounds out this palatial home. To paraphrase Anouska, “when people are having such a good time and enjoying their space, they are achieving something in their own lives which serves as a backdrop for lots of other people’s glorious lives.” An abundance of warmth and personality is felt in the objets d’art, often leading to hours of story-telling. The classical orientation of the interiors offers a sumptuous mix of colours, its palette strong and strict but at the same time 96

BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SUMMER 2019

cozy and comfy, and always with the mimicry of the orient. An equestrian focus runs through some of the areas of the property, a wonderful throw-back to the heritage of polo and of family. The handsome two-story house and adjacent guest house are resplendent with white stucco walls, stone quoining, dark green half-timbering and deep eaves, evoking the British Arts and Crafts style synonymous with Singapore, known locally as the “black and white” bungalow style. The main house and guest house line a central courtyard articulated with covered loggias to provide shade and much-needed cross-ventilation in the almost-always tropical climate. The compound is accessed from a radialpatterned cobblestone area which includes a discreet ramp that descends to parking beneath the house. The guest house offers the pool cabana on the ground floor and a family bedroom suite above, surrounded with breathtaking views of verdant tree scape of the Botanic Gardens beyond. The courtyard is an easy space dotted with dark gray rattan settees which stretch 30m in length creating huge entertaining areas. Fern baskets hang throughout and tin lamps serve as accents. Laced with hints of Asia with carefully-selected finishes from across Europe, Hempel, in collaboration with the Stern team, and her Design Director, Helena Clunies-Ross, has created a spacious family home in her classic East meets West style. Expertly adapted to suit the tropical environment in which it is constructed, this airy home is a testament to the successful marriage of old and new. To add even more grandeur to these glorious interiors are some 60 antiques from Sotheby’s and Christie’s which blend perfectly with over 50 pieces of bespoke furniture. Each room features its own special centre-piece such as the fine array of Japanese paper screens with dancing tigers and other symbols recalling the atmosphere of the East. Water ripples over the deepest, darkest green pool which sits between the drawing room and kitchen. The hallway boasts beautiful Dutch ebony mirrors while alabaster hanging ceiling lamps shine on the moody, dark gray Carrara marble. The kitchen is hands-on, marking the theme of copper and verdigris tones which run throughout. Altogether, a finely crafted house that offers a space to breath, become and believe. www.anouskahempeldesign.com

T

he peninsula south of San Francisco is dotted with suburban towns and villages in the hills and valleys along the west side of the bay. Nestled amidst the hilly neighbourhoods is a rare two-acre site. Seeking a sunfilled property that afforded privacy and the opportunity to spread out, the clients jumped at the chance to secure the property. The abundance of flat land meant that the site would be able to accommodate a house and support structures with plenty of space leftover for the development of both active and passive landscapes. “The programme for the house was quite complicated,” notes Richard Beard, lead architect for the project and founder of Richard Beard Architects. “It required clever compositional moves to accommodate everything the clients wanted. While designed for easy and casual living on a day-to-day basis, it had to provide a generous entertaining space, office, fitness room, and guest quarters — all while maintaining privacy for everyone.” The house needed to be elegant yet functional, a family-friendly home that simultaneously conveyed permanence, comfort, luxury, tradition, and modernity. The challenge was how to weave these seemingly disparate notions together as a holistic solution. The answer was to create a house that functioned as a strong yet neutral armature and that relied upon traditional proportions and materials. The interiors could then serve as an elegant counterpoint, animating the spaces as desired.

A series of stone-clad, linked structures and walls define the property, helping to break down the overall scale of the roughly 12,000-square-foot house. Spaces between structures become a suite of exterior courtyards. The stone, dry-stacked and featuring a raw cleft face, provides a sense of permanence and privacy to the property. The house unfolds as a series of layers, which physically and metaphorically signals the journey from public to private life. The path is marked by a series of walls and courtyards, beginning at the street, that lead to the autocourt and entry structure, and finally the interiors of the house itself. Inside the home, classical proportions were pushed, pulled, and stretched to create a unique language of profiles. The exterior stone walls slip inside the house and into the entry before transitioning into a mix of limestone (walls and floors), wood, and plaster. Large steel-framed windows and western red cedar beams add scale to the interior spaces. The simple approach to major interior finishes provides a sense of calm and scale to the house while furnishings provide touches of comfort. “The homeowners’ main concern was always about going 110 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SUMMER 2019

too modern and mine was about staying too traditional,” interior designer Kelly Hohla shares. “I wanted them to have an updated home that feels timeless and that they can grow in — I think we were able to strike the perfect balance.” Shared gathering spaces dominate the first floor (living room, dining room, kitchen, and so on), each providing access to the exterior. The second floor includes a zone that’s exclusively for kids. There’s also a generous and light-filled playroom just off the back stair that becomes a world apart, containing a proscenium and stage. Outside, the grounds offer a mix of formal and informal spaces, including a putting green, water features, and a separate, free-standing 1,000-square-foot pool house. The pool house, clad entirely in cedar, serves double duty as a guest house. The house defies simple definition; rather, its eclecticism provides an aesthetic that’s neither too formal nor too casual — the perfect solution for contemporary family living. www.richard-beard.com

agnificent in both scale and location, this amazing apartment occupies an entire floor in the tower of the Sherry-Netherland Hotel in New York City where views from every room are breath-taking. This glamorous and sun-lit apartment is home to a serious collector who has made 20th century masters the focal point throughout. These artists include such historic names as Avery, Leger, Bourgeois, Dubuffet, Survage, Diebenkorn, Calder, Metzinger, and Moore and Archipenko. Designers Geoffrey Bradfield and Roric Tobin skillfully played down their design in this apartment, yielding a quiet sophistication that complements the remarkable collection. In doing so, they allowed the exuberance of the client’s art its full voice. BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SUMMER 2019 115

This apartment was once the home of the legendary Claire Booth Luce during the period when she was the American Ambassador to Italy. The client, however, did not require the vast proportions of the voluminous ballroom so, in accordance with their current needs, converted the sixty-foot ballroom space into two rooms, utilizing approximately two-thirds of the space for the living room and devoting the remaining space for the library. The living room walls are beautifully papered in an ivorystriae silk while a bold custom-designed rug by Bradfield complements the area with its shades of grey on ivory. With the designers’ fondness for texture and rich exotic woods, burnished metal and lush textiles, the room comes to life. These contrasts are further enhanced with other elements of fine design from many centuries. The library is warm and intimate, nicely panelled in 118 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SUMMER 2019

warm oak veneers, an ideal setting for the pair of custom bronze wall sconces with Ming roof tiles. A scarab vase by Lalique, a Ruhlmann supper table and a set of Russian chairs complete this elegant setting. In the master bedroom, the walls are upholstered in a rich ivory-coloured suede, accented with bed throws and custom window treatments in a rose quilted silk motif. Of particular interest in the room is a signed, gilded writing table by Rateau, a pair of 1930s crystal sconces by Baccarat (formerly in the collection of Cole Porter) and a fine art painting by Marie Laurencin. A splendid apartment in a splendid hotel. The SherryNetherland, since opening in 1927, has attracted society’s elite and remains a luxury hotel of choice for Manhattan business and political leaders as well as world travellers. www.bradfieldtobinglobal.com

he Portola Valley Barn in California is a dynamic space, separate from an existing main residence, designed for large-scale entertaining as well as relaxation. Situated on a four-acre property with an existing main residence, the new building houses guest quarters, an office, and spaces for entertaining and relaxing. Encompassing 5,200 square feet, the dwelling consists of gabled forms that stretch across a clearing in a grove of trees. The volumes are loosely arranged around a terrace and lawn, writes Shelba Cornelison. Reminiscent of the tin-roofed, weathered rural vernacular 122 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SUMMER 2019

architecture of the region, the compound comprises three primary structures – a spacious home office, a home theatre and a luxurious guest suite – connected by interstitial entryways containing a kitchen and powder room. For exterior walls, the team used reclaimed oak from Kentucky barns, along with ebonized mahogany, to visually integrate the complex into the surroundings. The roof is standing-seam metal, painted to resemble weathered zinc. “At a distance, the barn has a rural character, but as you get closer the building becomes much more sophisticated and contemporary,” notes the design team.

In contrast to the rustic exterior, the interiors feature crisply detailed white walls, polished surfaces, and dramatic lighting. Large expanses of glass and doors provide strong visual and physical connections to the scenic terrain, merging inside with outside space. At the centre of the dwelling is a great room, which the family uses for entertaining, hosting charity events, and watching sporting events. The room’s focal point is a super-sized, 13-foot-wide, television. The kitchen features Caesarstone counters, Wood-Mode cabinets and backsplash tiles from Ann Sacks. Appliances include Gaggenau ovens, a Thermador cooktop and a Perlick wine 126 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SUMMER 2019

refrigerator. The recreation room contains a pool table, European furniture and a painting by artist Pete Reilly. The garage plays host to a vintage roadster. “Nothing about the design competes with the natural beauty of what you see out the window,” notes the design team. The low-water, low-maintenance landscape was designed by Walker Warner Architects in collaboration with Janell Denler Hobart. Plantings include California lilacs, coffee berry, Pennisetum spathiolatum, and strawberry trees. photographs matthew millman

Challenge was to combine two different aesthetics PHOTOGRAPHS ERIC PIASECKI WORDS SHELBA CORNELISON

hen interior designer Gideon Mendelson (above) and his team took on this extraordinary project in Manhattan for a recently married couple in their 40s – he an investment banker and she a small business owner – his goal was twofold: refinement and quality. Having designed an apartment for the husband at an earlier time, Mendelson was thrilled to have the opportunity to design for him again, this time incorporating the ideas of both husband and wife in the process. Mendelson feels it is always a fun challenge to marry two different aesthetics and create something unique and personal with two entities in mind. In this case, the husband likes handsome and modern with a touch of global. The wife chose pattern and colour with a touch of whimsy. The focus was to create a home that works for both, a well curated, sophisticated space full of visual interest that shows off stunning views of New York’s famous Hudson River and northern Manhattan. Functionally, the aim was to create space for entertaining friends and family from overseas and have plenty of ample storage for their belongings. This elegant home consists of three BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SUMMER 2019 129

bedrooms and three bathrooms, the end result being more than the sum of its parts. Entire rooms appeared larger, enhanced with personal accessories and delightful furnishings. The living room was planned around a place to entertain friends and to unwind at the day’s end. Aesthetically, Mendelson and his team kept the palette simple, the colours being shades of minty greens, charcoals and creams; a palette 130 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SUMMER 2019

that naturally evokes warmth and feeling. Textures, also, reigned supreme with the hemp and wool area rug, the nubby sofa fabric and lots of furry pillows. The kitchen and bathrooms were totally redone, creating wonderful, spacious areas made even more delightful with refined surfaces and cosmetic changes. For the dining room, a large round table made the

most sense architecturally, lending itself to intimacy and conversation. The custom table and chairs were custom made by Mendelson. A graphic wallcovering and dark trim adds drama to the room and immediately prompts interesting conversation, the views showing starlight both day and night. Mendelson’s custom mill work in the master bedroom also took the spotlight, ensuring plenty of storage. The various 132 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SUMMER 2019

soft blues and neutral colours are both inviting and relaxing. Again, the river views come into play, quite amazing for the couple to wake up to. A mix of vintage furnishings in the sitting room keeps things eclectic and yet personal, its colouring soft greys, golden yellows and a shot of cranberry, the perfect place to curl up and read a book. For Mendelson, all of the vintage

pieces he and his team find after careful searching make the project extra special. Curating a collection of vintage looks for someone is very personal. He feels these pieces offer a nice sense of history and nostalgia. real artistry to a space. In this particular project, the husbandwife team was open to some pretty fun forms of lighting. erched on a scenic bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii and surrounding mountains, this multi-purpose pavilion is envisioned as a flexible gathering space where the homeowners can host a variety of private gatherings, from family gettogethers to community events for up to 400 people. Adjacent parcels within the 14-acre property are devoted to various residences used by family and visitors, writes Shelba Cornelison. “The primary home is ideal for entertaining and gathering with small groups of family and friends, and day-to-day living,” says Greg Warner of Walker Warner Architects, “but it wasn’t amenable to the large-scale entertaining they wanted to do. The challenge was how to create a space that’s comfortable enough for 40, but can accommodate 400.” Responding to the elemental beauty of the setting, the design team sought to create a highlyadaptable, expansivefeeling yet human-scaled space by designing a structure that captured the island’s dramatic natural surroundings while emphasising transparency and making connections to the outdoors. The 3,600-square-foot pavilion takes full advantage of Hawaii’s ocean breezes through expansive floor-toceiling windows and sliding doors in the main living areas; a lanai provides direct access to the elements while remaining sheltered from the sun. An enduring exterior material palette of hardwoods and limestone in natural finishes and earthy tones was carefully selected to withstand harsh exposure to tropical rains, wind, and sun. Warner, the lead architect, and interior designer Marion Philpotts grew up in Hawaii; their aesthetic is influenced by the islands’ rich landscape and deep-rooted agricultural history. The resulting design showcases the beauty of Hawaii’s natural surroundings and pairs it with the functionality and comfort of a structure perfectly suited to its location.

140 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SUMMER 2019

Initially intended to be much larger and with multiple bedrooms, it soon became clear that what was needed instead was a flexible, central gathering space supported by a few key amenities, such as a catering kitchen, bathrooms, film screening room, and a large covered lanai. The goal was to create a sanctuary where guests could soak in the beauty of Kauai’s North Shore. To achieve this, the team utilized natural finishes boasting earthy tones of cream, brown, and gold in limestone, cumaru, afromosia, and cedar finishes. The interiors feature a colour palette of warm tones, such as the ochre-painted walls, that complements the lush, surrounding landscape. Interior furnishings adopt an organic, neutral aesthetic with walnut and monkeypod woods, beautifully-woven textiles, and luscious leathers. Spaces are easily transformable through furnishings that are visually scaled for the large interior volumes and physically lightened via hollow interiors to ease movement via small recessed casters. The dining tables have a heavy look to them, though the bases are hollow and the tables are slightly raised off the floor so that adjustable glides underneath touch the floor for easy movement. Interior spaces seamlessly connect to the outdoor lanai, which become a true extension of the interior. “We blurred the line between indoors and outdoors,” notes Warner. Exterior spaces reinforce flexibility, whether of an intimate scale for smaller gatherings or open lawn areas for larger gatherings. The verdant grounds also feature a pool, rambling streams, and hillside gardens planted with native flora. London landscape firm Dan Pearson Studio selected plants that naturally blend with both the architecture and landscape. photographs matthew millman

hen British designer Elnaz Namaki partnered with HvB Development founder Hugo van Bilderbeek on a residential property in London the result was nothing short of remarkable. This project, now sold, is testament to the visionary design talents of this partnership which transformed a tired art nouveau style property to an exquisite Georgian-style residence, all the while keeping the Art Deco interior architecture alive and well. As is evident from the photography of the finished product, this project was huge, and planning issues were many. For example, there was very little natural light due to the 60-year-old windows, which greatly affected the dark interior. These windows were enlarged but maintained the Georgian-style look. Further enhancing the lighting and airiness, a basement was added, featuring lightwell with walk-on glass and an extra feature of providing access to the garden above. Together, the London-based luxury design-and-build construction company with creative direction from design house Elnaz Namaki Studio provided an intelligent and bespoke passion for developing this outstanding townhouse. 142 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SUMMER 2019

One of the defining features of this unique partnership was the extremely high attention to detail. This private townhouse, which was carefully modernised, has managed to keep its history with features such as the original Art Deco fireplaces and Art Deco staircase. The staircase became the central core of the house. Mid-century design was a great inspiration during the interior decoration and each room reflects this; also each room is connected in theme by sumptuous and harmonious dark wood floors. Elnaz’s vision for the interior was to keep period design features but blend them with modern mid-century design, always enhancing and inspiring. Hugo, on the other hand, used his carefully refined skills, having delivered over 50 prime developments in central London from 2003 to 2014. A happy ending for all in the duo’s first project, the unique approach to designing and building became proof positive of a fully integrated and collaborative partnership which we will no doubt see time and time again. www.elnaznamaki.com

ocated in the Twin Peaks neighbourhood of San Francisco, this carefully orchestrated Mid Century renovation evokes the feeling of a cabin in the woods. Originally designed in 1964 by architect Albert Lanier, the husband of renowned sculptor Ruth Asawa, the house was recently remodeled to suit its new resident’s more contemporary tastes, writes Shelba Cornelison. The client, a San Francisco-based business woman, initially approached the architects with a small list of updates. A first round of interventions included new white oak floors and staining of the ceilings to a neutral gray. Subsequent phases addressed more fundamental aspects of the house including re-imagining the entire layout of 148 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SUMMER 2019

the house and creating more open interiors that better connected to the adjacent, steeply sloped backyard. The architects found a solution that could solve both problems: they relocated the house’s stair to the rear wall and in the process opening up the floor plan. The graceful sweep of the stairway now links all three levels of the house: the first floor has a foyer and two single-car garages, the second floor includes three ensuite bedrooms and a private garden, and the third floor features the living room, dining room, kitchen and main patio. A new bridge between the kitchen and the yard created a sheltered space beneath it which was transformed into an outdoor spa adjacent to the master bathroom, complete with a cold plunge and outdoor shower. A beautiful glass

passageway connects the second-floor master bath and master bedroom and serves double duty as a mini-office that features full views of the backyard. The triangular peaks crowning the third floor were redesigned into a loft complete with skylights. These enchanting skylights open to a roof deck that boasts views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Rather than regrading and flattening the sloping yard, the renovation used the existing topography to its advantage, the end result being a tiered series 150 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SUMMER 2019

of outdoor spaces connected via a new stair. Lush greenery frames the house and even includes a kitchen garden where a fire pit and ample seating were added. So fitting with today’s outdoor living popularity. Aesthetically pleasing in every way, the Twin Peaks house’s seamlessly flowing rooms and it’s light and airy decor make for a great transformation of home and landscaping, certain to be enjoyed for years to come. photographs joe fletcher
