Artist Liz Clayton’s cool take on the fronds of a palm tree is optically brilliant. After the stems are dried, they are pruned back to a manageable shape and transformed into stunning metallic sprigs. Charlotte Morgan Silver Leaf Abstracts

The canvas stretchers are covered in a traditional calico fabric and then each canvas is prepared with white gesso, after which silver leaf is then carefully applied and gently brushed to achieve the soft metallic effect. The silver is then delicately painted with a layer of lemon shellac, adding slight warmth. Charlotte Morgan | Black & White Abstracts

Charlotte Morgan | Silver Leaf Bibliotheque

Drawing upon the success of the bestselling Silver Leaf Abstracts, Charlotte has expanded the selection with a striking set of Black and White Abstracts. The clean cut, white canvases are given a coat of matt black gesso, carefully applied to the specific design. Further texture is given to the bold black structures by adding a rubbing of soft willow charcoal to distress the sharp lines. Overall the paintings have a classic and sophisticated look that, when viewed as a collection, is striking and modern.

The title, Bibliotheque, gives a clue to the inspiration for this piece. Rectangular planes of silver are stacked horizontally and vertically like books in a library. Yet look behind them, and you’ll see generous washes of green and blue, the perfect compliment to the rigid formation up front that catches the light so alluringly.
