he Dulux ColourFutures™️ 2019 Act palette is encouraging professionals to capture the mood of the moment in their design. Now in its 16th year, the Dulux ColourFutures™️ palettes are selected to help professionals make choices for a wide variety of buildings with more confidence, providing support on all steps from inspiration through visualisation, product choice and application. Based around the Dulux Colour of the Year, Spiced Honey™️, the Act palette colours are a collection of bold, energising colours that symbolise a ‘can do’ attitude. Crisp and fresh, they have an optimistic appearance that encourages creative thought and action. The thought process for Spiced Honey™️ and the Act palette is about creating a positive, proactive mood where people are empowered to ‘do’, to act and to take a stand. As people tire of looking to governments and corporations to do the right thing, they do not want to be the silent majority any more. There is a growing sense of individuals and communities taking responsibility, getting involved and taking action at grassroots level. On issues that matter to people, big and small, the mantra is think global, act local. Small acts can make a big difference. This applies to families choosing to buy sustainable produce or swimmers taking action against the plastics that threaten our oceans. Communities are harnessing social media to come together with like-minded individuals to start and share campaigns and petitions on the issues that matter most. Often, the most exciting plans can begin close to home and people need a place that supports them in their endeavors and spurs them on. Our built environments can be that support base, acting both as a testing ground and a springboard for action. The idea of a honey toned neutral struck a chord with the experts during the forecasting workshop to select the Colour of the Year. Honey is associated with nourishment and energy and the imagery of bees themselves perfectly captured the idea of a caring, thriving community. The brightness of the Act palette makes it ideal for education and office designs, as well as social spaces where people interact. Alongside these exuberant tones, Spiced Honey™️ acts as the ‘sensible adult’ in the room, keeping order and stopping things from getting too crazy. Dulux Creative Director, Marianne Shillingford, says: “There’s a desire to reach out, engage with others, to make things better and ‘be the change’. 1 22

PROMOTION
WHY 2019 IS THE TIME
FOR US ALL TO ACT
“That change can be anything from marching for women’s rights and fishing plastic out of the ocean, to small acts of neighbourly kindness. People are ready to seize the moment – it is time to act. “This palette can help to create spaces that encourage dynamism. It’s a collection of colours that are ideal for energising occupants and to encourage them to adopt a positive, exploratory outlook.” We are encouraging design specifiers to take the time to consider how the undeniably powerful human connection with colour can be harnessed within design; to create spaces that enable people to thrive and feel productive, despite the ever growing demands on our daily lives. The future of building design requires a fresh look at interior spaces, and the Act palette fulfils the need to push the brief beyond aesthetics to create environments that inspire us to take action, making the changes we want to see.
To decide on the Dulux Colour of the Year and ColourFutures™️ palettes, Dulux assembled a global panel of top design professionals to research trends, insights and consumer behaviours. There were some incredible examples referred to by our experts during the trend forecasting process of people coming together and crossing divides to make a difference. One of the most poignant was the story of a Palestinian mother and an Israeli mother. Both had lost sons in the bloodshed, but came together to find understanding and reconciliation in each other. They, along with many others, are hoping to change hearts and minds so a resolution can one day be found – starting at a local level to create wider impact. The Dulux expert panel married art with science to decide on the annual colour, which is versatile and contemporary and complements a wide variety of interior styles with its optimistic range of four supporting palettes.

THE POWER OF CONFLICT Good design comes after creating the right amount
I
f I weren’t a designer I would have been a chef: my viewpoint on design and cooking are about the same. Create just the right amount of conflict and tension to make you want to take a second look or have that second bite. It’s easier to create too much tension and conflict, than too little. The difficulty is knowing what just the right amount is, without going overboard, because everyone’s definition of what overboard is can be different (you know who you are). When I am reviewing a design with one of my designers the most common critique I often have is that there are too many dominant elements competing in the design. Too many elements does not always mean too much conflict or tension. In fact it often results in the opposite, creating a feeling that lacks contrast which runs the risk of quickly turning bland. You can throw a lot of ingredients into a stew, but in the end it all tastes like stew. ‘Less is more’ is easy to say but not easy in practice. My studies at Pratt Institute focused on designing compositions containing dominant, sub-dominant and subordinate elements. This is used in many design practices from floral arrangement to web design (and cooking). You cannot have dominance without contrast. From my experience, in a light fixture it’s not the dominant element of the design, but the subdominant element that becomes the tipping point of a successful or unsuccessful design. It’s that hint of acidity to make the sweet taste sweeter, but the acidity shouldn’t overtake the sweetness if the customer was expecting dessert!

BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SPRING 2019
Being a designer is about creating experiences that evoke feelings that are both familiar and new, it’s about creating this contrast. In a space, it’s the brass hardware that stands out in an otherwise grey-on-grey-on-grey kitchen. Often we design light fixtures that are meant to bring that tension, that bit of wow factor into your space. The piece still needs to relate to the space and have that element of familiarity, but it also needs to have that element of surprise. I’ve had experience designing everything from shoes, to spaces, to furniture and now lighting. What I enjoy most about lighting design is that built-in element of surprise that happens (most of the time) when you turn the fixture on. How much tension and contrast is the right amount? For me, this is where trends come in to factor. As the director of design for an American manufacturer, it is extremely important that I understand what trends should and should not influence our product launches. New finishes and materials can be very costly for a domestic manufacturer to implement so we need to be sure that the trend is more of a lasting movement and not a passing fad. Bright brass seems to be on the way out but mixed metals and finishes seem to be growing. Adding a variety of different materials to accent our steel elements is much more doable than converting all of our metal work from steel to brass, it also tells me that we need more contrast in our designs. I also need to be careful to not fall into the trap of seeing the trends that I want to see: am I looking for similar forms to justify my own design goals? Trends tend to blend and merge, appear and disappear very quietly in my opinion. I do know that sustainability and longevity, whether they appear on someone’s trend list or not, are always in style. I don’t think any designer intentionally designs a space thinking that it will go out of style in two years. We’re all striving to create a timeless look that is both unique and familiar with the ultimate goal of pleasing our clients.

DESIGN IS A WAY OF LIFE
It is all part of the Italian national culture
F
or anyone growing up in Italy, design is part of every day life. From fashion to furniture and interiors, it’s part of the Italian culture and status quo. This makes it easier and a natural process for Italian interior designers to create something unique and different. It’s also the ease of access to knowledge on the use of products and materials, new and traditional. It’s the constant research to strive to create something new and innovative. Italians know good design, taking pride in the essence of discreet luxury that translates into Italian homes which today has become a popular virtue for a discerning international client base. North Italy has been the soul of the furniture industry in Italy, and has deep roots with artisans that have helped shape the design destination it is known for today. Of course, the annual Salone del Mobile in Milan has grown to become one of the largest and undisputed as the most celebrated design shows on an international platform. Many design empires sit in the heart of the Italian Design District, Brianza, which has helped to shape the country’s credit to luxurious, high quality and innovative designs: Made in Italy. Good design is in our DNA and it’s our passion. Most of the very best furniture companies originate in Italy, often found with a deep heritage that comes from an old family generation through to the present day era with the same values.

Good design is in our DNA – it’s our passion
About Maurizio Pellizzoni
A
ward-winning and internationally acclaimed interior designer Maurizio Pellizzoni has design in his DNA. It’s no surprise, as he grew up near Lake Como and comes from a family who work in the business. Since founding his consultancy in the Chelsea Design Quarter in 2007, he has applied his Italian appreciation of style and design to a range of residential and commercial projects. He’s equally comfortable working on a project from scratch, with an open brief and a blank canvas. Maurizio Pellizzoni Ltd has created interiors for listed, period properties, new buildings, spacious country mansions and bijou townhouses in the UK and abroad. www.mauriziopellizzoni.co.uk

BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SPRING 2019
Italian homes are often luxurious and layered in stunning detail. Renaissance design harks back to the mid 14th Century with elaborate materials and fine, ornate details. Today, modern Italian style is far more minimalist. However, both styles – traditional and new – still exist and both continue to portray meticulous craftsmanship, luxury and high quality materials. These Italian companies are taste makers for a discerning clientele and always strive to create new product innovations combining elements that are the very crux that makes Italian interior design stand out. This is also what makes Italian design unique in the industry. Stellar brands with illustrious histories encompassing vision, creative direction and stylistic principles, such as Poliform, Minotti, B&B Italia, Cappellini, Arflex, Giorgetti, Boffi and Porada to name just a few, are now well established universally with their strong heritage links. As a concept, simplicity, luxury and detail are the main elements that make classic Italian design look effortless; synonymous with the manufacturers products that have the highest levels of craftsmanship and using traditional techniques and advances in today’s technology. What essentially sets Italian design apart from the rest is its understated, refined elegance. Design is constantly changing and manual roles are being replaced with machines. The details and craftsmanship with these Italian manufacturers are balanced with the advances in technology, an important value that should continue to be cherished. The luxury is in the detail and proportions. It’s about downplaying the bling with accent touches of elegant materials such as brass, marble or fine woods to create timeless, discreet luxury with Italian flavour. As a designer, I continue to strive to interpret the evolution and changes in modern lifestyles that are translated throughout these top tier brand collections. From concept to completion, the finesse of these masterpieces is all in the perfection of detail.

THE PERFECT BED QUEST Push the boundaries of buying bespoke
C
rafting bespoke luxury beds for more than 20 years, I have found there is nothing more exciting than working with a customer or an interior designer on a concept that allows us to push the boundaries of design and celebrate the endless possibilities of bespoke craft. From the shape of your body to the style of your home, dimensions, materials and fabrics can all be personalised to create a unique piece of furniture. People are realising there are infinite options when it comes to buying bespoke, and are beginning to take advantage of this. Over the last decade, I have seen a notable increase in the amount of time people are taking to select a bed that is perfect and specific to them. They have a greater interest in the materials used within the bed, its construction and the craft process. Customers are no longer satisfied with the traditional bed department tucked in the corner of the third floor of the department store, they want the service, style and satisfaction they find in other retail experiences. Commissioning a bespoke bed enables customers to work to an overall scheme, creating something that elegantly enhances a space, or creating a piece of stunning furniture to become the focal point of a room.

You don’t share clothes so why share the same bed
About Alistair Hughes
A
listair Hughes is Managing Director and owner of Savoir, a British company widely regarded as the world’s most luxurious maker of beds. Savoir’s heritage began in the iconic Savoy hotel. The company was started in 1905 as the Savoy Bedworks with the aim of giving guests the best night’s sleep. Alistair bought the brand in 1997 with his business partner, and Savoir was born. Savoir’s tailor-made beds have become almost as legendary as the stars that have slept in them and the brand now has three London showrooms and also exports worldwide with 14 showrooms internationally including New York, Paris and Shanghai. BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SPRING 2019
It is inspiring to develop and craft a bespoke bed which is extraordinary, from hidden compartments to high-tech features or personalised fabrics. Clients are also becoming more adventurous with their bed designs. We recently made a bed for a customer who wanted a champagne fridge fitted, and another who wanted a rotating bed because they couldn’t decide which view they preferred. Bespoke beds and mattresses can also be created for yachts and private jets. There is no need to sacrifice comfort for size and shape. The growing desire for bespoke fabrics to be featured on beds has also driven some of our recent collaborations with the world’s finest makers. Last year we partnered with Fromental on some exquisite hand-painted silk wallpaper which featured as headboard panelling. Fromental creates everything by hand which enables them to weave personal initials or messages into their wallpapers and fabrics, elevating the individuality of the design. In addition to the overall design of the bed, customers are looking for an unprecedented level of comfort. Clients understand the importance of investing in a bed that is designed especially for them. For example, you don’t share your partner’s clothes, so why share the same bed? A bespoke bed allows tension zoning (soft, medium, firm, or anywhere between) on each side of the bed so that one half of a couple doesn’t have to compromise. This also goes for problem areas that might need extra support. It’s important to have a bed fit for your body, just like you would a Savile Row suit. I believe no other piece of furniture, fabric or fitting can make such a big difference to your life. I always remind interior designer’s that the biggest difference they make to their client is very likely thanks to the bed they have specified! Investing in a new bed is a big decision, but choosing the right one will pay off every morning of your life.

ENGAGING WITH COLOUR
Shifting away from the greys and beige
C
olour is all around us yet designers and architects have lived in a world of grey and beige for decades. It could be that the colours are seen as a distraction to the functionality that designers are ‘thinking through’ when planning a scheme. A shift occurred a few years ago when colour started to appear widespread in the design world. Designers such as Kit Kemp who use a riot of colour and pattern in hotel schemes signified a colourful move from the safe, muted colour palette that had been on trend for the past two decades. In 2017 the Society of British and International Design (SBID) launched the Colour Council which includes the leaders of colour coders from Pantone, RAL, Dulux and 56

others who influence colour preferences. It was set up to combine the two key components that a designer needs; knowledge of both the science and emotion of colour. They are two entirely different but important areas of how we should engage with colour and how colour is affected by light, environment and performance, as well as how we react to and within certain coloured environments. These basic factors determine the success of an interior and its design, not just by affecting the sense of size but also the mood of a space and as a result, the productivity and performance output of people within a space. When a commercial client commissions a professional interior designer to create a design, it is not only spaceplanning and product placement that a designer might consider but also and importantly the colour scheme to

Colour of the Year helps encapsulate a wider mood
About Vanessa Brady
V
anessa Brady is an international multi-award winning interior designer, business consultant and founder of SBID, Society of British and International Design. She regularly speaks on business development and finance overseas on behalf of the UK government for the creative industries. shape the space, which can be determined by the profile of the users, the function and purpose of the space and the mood that a colour combination will create; productivity, relaxation, safety etc. For example, we know that calming colours in hospitals influence the way patients respond, and that patients’ recovery is enhanced when surrounded by soft colours. In addition, each year through the huge volume of entries we receive from around the world for the SBID International Design Awards, we notice trends and colour influences as they change. Colour is affected by fashion and popular culture and therefore, we experience trends in colour affected by social, cultural and economic factors – on trend colours often represent a feeling present in society. Like fashion, trends for interior design are generally predicted two years ahead and in addition there is an increasing number of companies creating their own Colour of the Year, drawing attention to the significance of colour in design and our everyday lives. Dulux recently announced their 2019 Colour of the Year – Spiced Honey – a cosy, warm shade that is said to reenergise our homes for the year ahead after unsettling times in 2018. The Colour of the Year helps to encapsulate a wider mood and unite different sectors of society in a positive, often comforting way. It also helps to emphasise the value that colour brings to a space, in the same way that lighting, technology and furnishings do. Brands such as Smeg broke the mould and embraced colour within their products, traditionally known as ‘white goods’. It is fundamental that the power of colour is researched and investigated by the architecture and design sector. In the past colour has been seen as an additional element to creating a pleasant space rather than being a key business investment tool. We aim for the Colour Council to be an a independent point of reference and a one-stop destination and for advice and direction for the use of colour to enhance the value of a residential or commercial space.

Living Coral, Pantone’s colour of the year, is a vibrant, almost- neon coral. Throughout history, coral is rare because a shade this strong would have been cost-prohibitive to make. To Annie Sloan, it conjures up the flavours of India and Morocco, of spices and sunsets. She enjoys creating her own corals by mixing Chalk Paint colours together such as an inspired sunset with a palette of Antoinette, Barcalona Orange and Emperor’s Silk; in other words, playing with blocks of colour Josef Albers-style. www.anniesloan.com

PRECISION IS THE KEY
Metalwork represents limitless creativity
M
etalwork is often regarded as a combination of art and science. For some, raw metal is just that; for me, it represents limitless creativity. Most people do not realise the potential of metal because all they can see is a big mass. What I love about working with metal is its malleability, both physically and figuratively, to transform into a true work of art. One of the oldest art forms, fabricating metal, historically relied upon two standard methods: casting and hammering. Both equally meticulous and arduous, casting either consists of a wood pattern and sandblast mold or a wax pattern and a clay or ceramic mold that liquid metal is poured into, while hammering – predating the former method – only requires a hammer and a ledge. Due to the temperamental nature of metal, metalwork is often regarded as a combination of art and science. One degree past the metal’s heating point and fissures form. Too much hammering results in a compromised structural integrity. Given so many variables, absolute precision holds the key to a successful final product. Although modern technology has increased metalwork production and thus its visibility in today’s marketplace, I firmly believe in maintaining an artisanal foundation for my work. In an era of fast design, I eschew modern machinery if it detracts from a craftsman’s skill set. The most useful tools we will ever have are our – hands and knowledge. Ancient civilizations have created the most beautiful metal objects – that are still revered for their delicate

About Jonathan Sowter
J
onathan Sowter is the founder, CEO and designer of Jonathan Charles specialising in luxury antiqueinspired furniture, lighting and accessories. Having started out as an apprentice at Theodore Alexander when he was only 24, he started his own brand in 2004, continuing the traditions of cabinetmaking and neoclassical design. With origins in 16th century European style, the brand has evolved to incorporate Art Deco, Mid-Century, and even postmodern design. Jonathan has grown his 15-year-old company from 10 to now over 1,500 artisans where he shares his cabinetmaking skills and encourages each employee to continue traditional craftsmanship to the next generation of artisans.

balance of durability and design. I refuse to take shortcuts even if it means taking twice as long as someone else to produce the same product because I know hand-craftsmanship will always prevail over time. My passion lies in my ability to meld Old World techniques with new age trends. While a sleek and minimalist aesthetic dictates people’s preference, I can see how an undercurrent of traditionalists are now affecting the outcome of metalwork. People come to me because they understand and appreciate my dedication to creating products out of preservation of tradition. I want to capture the beauty of these classic originals in an approachable manner that can both appeal to and inform today’s discerning buyers. My philosophy even extends to the raw material; while iron and even some metal plated resin have become de rigeur for many metalsmiths, I fashion my objects exclusively out of solid bronze or brass. Rarely do foundries use entire metals nowadays because the cost of the raw materials is simply too high to keep up with today’s productions. Making everything out of solid bronze or brass is my accountability of upholding integrity and ensuring everything that I make I would be personally proud to display in my own home. Having my own foundry also grants me an exploratory design mindset – anything I envision can come to fruition. With every flourish, fleur-de-lis, and other neoclassical motifs come another design on the polar end of the spectrum: tonguein-cheek paperweights and objects with hidden surprises or unexpected twists. I also love incorporating unexpected material to create an eclectic look. You can pair a marble slab with a hammered brass surface and the dichotomy between the two contrasting textures results in an entirely new style. Similarly, you can achieve a monochromatic look with two different materials, like a dark Santos rosewood and bronze, that complement each other’s deep chocolate undertones but highlight the difference in textures. I like to have a little fun when I’m designing. My more adventurous designs aren’t tied to specific inspirations but rather a reflection of my sense of humour. Metalwork is all about forging something that seems impossible. The mark of a good craftsman should always be determined by how unique his metalwork is. Besides, if you can’t have fun in your craft, why do it at all?

A SPARKLING TOUCH
Beautiful jewels hold a special place in design
I
n the past few years it has become more and more apparent that we have a growing trend that links the world of interior design and furniture design with the world of jewellery. In high-end interiors, people surround themselves with objects that have become more sophisticated and glamorous, often jewellery and fashion inspired. Designers around the globe have put more emphasis on home furnishings that can include semi-precious stones and other decorative materials, creating designs that become true pieces of art...not unlike the impact a piece of Cartier jewellery might have on the total look of an elegantly dressed person. These final touches in home furnishings add the same desired effect, that of luxury, inspiring interest and charisma, all the while underlining the unique character of the inhabitants. Looking at the development of interior design throughout the ages, we can often observe this phenomenon. Starting from Medieval and even earlier – through Renaissance, Restoration, Baroque, Neoclassicism, Art Nouveau and art Deco and up to our modern era – beautiful jewels hold a special place in furniture design. Thanks to this growing trend, we now find in our living spaces great mother of pearl and stone inlays, decorative chains or semi-precious stones, and often finely beaded tassels to add that special touch. Sometimes the entire piece – a cabinet or a sideboard – looks like a semi‑precious stone itself, almost totally covered in these wonderful eyecatching accents.

BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SPRING 2019
Throughout the home, incredible attention is given to the highest quality finishes, pillows and throws made of silk or velvet, and other items which may include gold and silver and finely embroidered metal threads. This is especially true in the lighting world which takes us to an entirely new dimension. Light has always been magical and remains a basic tool for good decor. Designers often choose huge shining jewels in chandeliers as well as table and floor lamps and wall designs. With table and floor lamps, we often see colourful tassels, adding to the already decorative design. We all have read about the amazing, if ostentatiously large – crystal and Murano glass-made chandeliers and wall lights that decorated the most important rooms in the houses of the noble, rich and famous. In our era, thanks to the change of taste as well as technological developments, the shapes have changed allowing for new materials to step in. But crystals, gold and other decorative metals and materials have not been forgotten by modern designers. Elaborated modern central pieces, sometimes made of hundreds of homemade crystal, glass, ceramic or metal elements, create a magical accent. The tiny details they encompass – especially when washed with streams of their own light – give an impression of a magnificent, sparkling waterfall, or even galaxies from another world. Today, we are able to use many materials that are still precious but are more cost-effective. Every designer knows the intrinsic value of these native decorative touches and the effect they have on the entire design theme. Just as an elegant outfit needs the right accessory, an elegant design scheme needs the right balance, and here the ‘less is more’ rule often comes into play. Modern spaces, usually more minimalist, allow less details and decorative items than those kept in classical styles. Fortunately, interior jewels now come in any style to suit any taste, but it is still important to choose them carefully, to give them proper exposure, so we can enjoy and appreciate them for years to come. One thing is certain: jewelry-accented pieces find a way to add taste and style to any home.

I
t is rare to find a singlefamily home on a double lot in a landmark district of Chicago. But that was the case of a recent Vincere, Ltd. project, a house that had undergone a slight renovation and modernisation in the late 1980’s. When Vincere was brought into the project to oversee all architectural and interior design as well as project oversight, it was the beginning of a two-year process. To bring the original 5,500 square foot home to one that exceeds 8,000 square feet was quite an undertaking. The Vincere team’s goal was to restore, refine and enlarge the home, while honouring its heritage of that earlier moment in time; and yet incorporating up-to-the-minute spaces and amenities. One of these amenities was the rebuilding of fine old mouldings throughout the home. Through detailed research, including multiple trips to the Chicago Historical Society, mouldings were restored using custom millwork to closely emulate the period. All millwork throughout the home, including cabinetry and paneling, was designed by Vincere. Once the renovation was fully underway, the team began the BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SPRING 2019 117

interior design process in earnest. While the overall essence was already conceptualised, the goal was to create a home of beauty, function and comfort. Vincere is known for its ability to integrate clients’ important personal items, incorporate existing artwork, advise on the acquisition of new pieces, and synthesise all elements into a cohesive whole. of these things in an organic way, resulting in a collected home that feels natural and well-suited to its inhabitants. This 1887 Victorian in Wicker Park is nestled along Beer Baron Row, the landmark district housing mansions which, when built, were owned by Chicago’s wealthiest brewers and public figures. ward-winning interior architect Sybille de Margerie lives her philosophy: being creative with simplicity, modernising the traditional, making technology attractive and colours elegant. She designs for harmony and comfort, her creative concepts mixing the most profound uniqueness with culture and emotion....often intrinsically linking the environment or the history of a place...as she did in this recent London project. “I’m not looking to leave my imprint on everything I do,” she says. “I’m more interested in revealing the soul and uniqueness of a place.” This project of Sybille’s is situated in an old workshop of Pre-Raphaelite painter Lawrence Alma Tadema, in the Abbey Road area of London. Steeped in history and prestige, the site is classed as historic, the guiding principle behind the decoration being to preserve and enhance the space’s historic characteristics. The architecture showcases the impressive former workshop in a stunning platinum leaf, its original arches preserved at the entrance. A mixture of both styles and periods, as much in the choice of materials as in the furniture itself, exists in harmony with the clients’ own collections of art. life, comfort, sensuality, rigour and poetry were not lost in this luxury-without-ostentation setting. Throughout, all artwork shown is part of the clients’ private collection...adding colourful and meaningful accents beyond the norm. Sybille’s own innate sophistication, furthered by a strong personality and bold taste, allows her to assert her own sense of luxury to each of her highly exclusive projects. “I attach great importance to fluidity of spaces, light and comfort, as well as choice materials and harmony of colours,” she says. This project, functional and contemporary, like so many of her other – often awardwinning projects – show her great attention to detail is second to none, and her striving for perfection is such that it draws together all five senses, often simultaneously. 134 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SPRING 2019

STARK BEAUTY OF THE WHITE HOUSE A contemporary space that is comfortable in its minimalism

ocated in a luxury residential estate in Cape Town’s Constantia Valley, this outstanding home project – called the White House, because of its neutral colourways, exudes self-assured sophistication through a very minimalist approach. The initial architecture, conceptualised by Vivid Architects, was refined and developed by leading South African Architecture firm SAOTA. It reveals a dramatic facade, with honed stone floor and wall slabs lending themselves to a bold aesthetic. Tasked to create an interior that could confidently fit into this dominant setting, and working closely with the owners, Mark Rielly of interior design studio ARRCC, revelled in the challenge. “I was conscious of not letting the furnishings compete with the architecture, but I also didn’t want them to take a back seat,” says Mark, who selected a neutral palette to achieve his objective. Taking full advantage of the myriad glass panes and open volumes allowing daylight to stream through the home, Mark allowed this choice of natural hues to be engulfed in sunshine, accentuating the stark white walls and the green outdoors filtering through the oversizedwindow views. In the gallery-like corridor, the client’s personal art pieces become focal accents. On the upper level, a bridge links the passageway to bedrooms and bathrooms that provide sanctuaries of respite in their muted tones. Warm wood wall panelling, guinea fowl-feather lampshades and patterned marble define this peaceful luxury. In the casual living space, a touch of African – again minimalism – presides, too, with brown leather sofas and the client’s existing ottomans decorated with zebra stripes, collectively maintaining eye-catching intrigue. Where volumes could appear overwhelming, Mark uses a cosied up approach. Its slatted timber ceiling within the double-volume entrance divides the overhead space, while still allowing shards of light to penetrate
from the skylight above. Such shadow play continues in the dining room as well, where a Venetian glass lighting feature, resembling a cascading waterfall, reflects and refracts rainbows of illumination across the open-plan living area. “The aim was to create a contemporary space that was comfortable in its minimalism,” explains Mark, of the uncluttered living room interior that is at once chic and welcoming. Large, angular leather sofas are offset by rounded solid-timber coffee tables and a striking Riva cedar wood swivel chair. The brazenness of the clad honed stone fireplace finds solace in the softness of the flowing linen curtains and plush woollen rugs. Such textural appeal continues around the dining area, where Sisal wallpaper complements a French oak table by master craftsman Pierre Cronje. Creative touches throughout the home include the organic centrepiece contrasted by linear suede seating by Minotti, maintaining visual appeal through the curvature of each piece of furniture. By adding plant life indoors, the flow between inside and out is uncoerced, aided by the echoing of wood in both spaces...the living area’s dark stained oak flooring and the iroko timber tables and benches outdoors. One senses a holiday feel when stepping out onto the undercover patio, according to Mark, of the area that offers options for dining, entertaining and relaxing. A nicely positioned swimming pool and verdant garden beyond again appreciates the marriage of pronounced architectural landscaping outdoors and equally assertive interiors. For the owners, who specified openness and light, the White House by ARRCC and its design team provided bright signature walls and bold accents rather than prevailing trends...lending character and liveable elegance to this outstanding project. www.arrcc.com

he initial brief for this project was to create a beautiful home that showcased the clients art collection. Incorporating art into my design schemes at an early stage is always an important part of my job, but when I saw this client’s art it was clear that it wasn’t only the address of the apartment that was going to be exceptional! Works from Warhol, Bacon, Doig, Riopelle, Soulages and Freud deserve very special consideration. The particular challenge here was to design an apartment that showed the incredible art at its best without detracting from, or fighting with the unique views of Sloane Street, Knightsbridge, Harrods and Harvey Nichols that the apartment offered. To be a home, and not a gallery, the design also needed to soften the hard architectural finishes of the original apartment. To do this, we focused on lighting – in the hallway we created alcoves sized specifically for the Warhols and Doig within, and gently lit them from above and below. The polished plaster behind both softened the lighting and created a warm background in which the art sits. In the entrance hall a Lucian Freud proof sits above a simple console with easy storage. The clients didn’t need the third bedroom, so we looked at the Interior Architecture of the building and opened up the entire front half of the apartment, accentuating the feeling of open space, the incredible views and maximising the natural light coming into the
apartment. A stunning painting by the internationally acclaimed Canadian artist Jean-Paul Riopelle sits above the marble fireplace in the living area in a myriad of colours, whilst a triptych by Francis Bacon sits above the bar in the dining area – in the evening it reflects the crystal chandelier above the dining table and the lights of Harrods beyond. In place of the third bedroom is the client’s study, with direct views down Sloane Street. We created a wall in calfskin leather, the panels of which were sized to accentuate the art, including an insurance copy of Magritte leaning against the wall. Every piece of furniture, each fabric and every finish was selected not only for its functionality but also for its ability to complement the art. The dining table for example is almost triangular, so wherever you sit at the table it emphasises either the art or the views beyond. I came up with the original design for this project when I was Senior Designer at Helen Green Design. Part way through the project I set up on my own and I finished the apartment under the auspices of my own design studio (Studio-LH). It is an incredible apartment – the design and art combine to make to make this arguably the most prestigious residential development in London in the last 20 years. The owner commented upon completion that“ Lucy Holloway is not only an extremely talented designer but her attention to detail, costing and follow through with contractors made the whole experience efficient and enjoyable. She is a star!” www.studio-lh.com

TRADITIONAL EDGE
WITH ELEGANCE Bringing life back to a home that had never had a chance to smile PHOTOGRAPHS SARAH HOGAN WORDS NICOLAS SPENCER
BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SPRING 2019 147
S
earching for a potential blank canvas to turn into a creative, eclectic and inspirational retreat for my partner Sophie took a very long time to find, a matter of almost two years. This was mainly due to the fact that there was of course a cap to her budget, with a discipline to adhere to (which is very hard amongst creatives) – and the prospective home had to be in a desperate state, in order to accommodate the vision of interior architects like ourselves and the hunger for always recreating and re-planning. In this case, once the opportunity finally presented itself to us, it was to end up needing a modernist approach to a salvage project. It was a very uncared for and recently frowned upon humble Victorian terraced house. Once built for the Irish working class, only later to accommodate the most peculiar of residents throughout more than a Century: from industrious desperate family housing, to sheltering veterans of the war, to a lodging for ‘ladies of the night’, to a drugs den for addicts and dealers, to finally being raided by police and eventually taken over by the council, with only ever getting nominal attention, just enough to keep it standing. This was it, Sophie’s chance to bring life back to a lost home that never actually had a chance to smile. The battle of bids began. Fast-lane developers pulled out as it was evident that a four to five month flip with the typical refurbishing would not be enough. Instead twice the time and twice the money would be needed and from someone with a different mindset in the design and development business. We fought hard and she got the house! Planning began and a trusted workforce was appointed. My commitment was to give her what she wanted through construction and project management while also conceptualising together, designing, drawing and sourcing harder than ever to accumulate a nice balance of vintage/reclaimed feature pieces, light fixtures and ironmongery – mixed with fresh contemporary joinery and an open plan facelift to a once very cellular interior. ‘Traditional Edge with Elegance’ was our concept. Shades of blue, greys and a particular off-white became 148 BRIDGE FOR DESIGN SPRING 2019
our colour palette. Newfound life and splendour to a fallen home became our emotional attachment. A determination to keep things genuine meant all oak and walnut was left natural with only clear matt lacquers to protect. All brass/bronze and nickel were given the same respect and any definition of detail on joinery was kept subtle and unfussy. Structurally, this house was in such a dire state that it needed to be rebuilt completely from inside. From excavation and a rebuilt ground floor and first floor to new ceilings and a reinforced roof – every internal wall was removed and a select few were rebuilt. At one point there were only three external walls and a roof remaining while the inside was completely hollow. The modernist approach was to break from tradition on the typical planning of a period house ground floor. This typically consists of double receptions and enclosed multi spaces. Instead we wanted to launch this home into a new century with its heritage and identity intact – but to also provide a modern family with everything needed in todays world and with all the amenities of modern day living. That meant more open and better spatial planning, more storage, more light, appliance innovation, more efficient energy saving and usage, plus a timeless design appeal laced with hints of what was elegant from the past century. Chevron flooring made of French reclaimed oak trimmed with raw brass inlays, octagon floor mosaics made of grey Carrara marble, solid brass opera theatre door pulls, reclaimed mid to last century lighting, panelled ceilings and a set of Victorian cast iron salvaged garden gates used as a room divider. These were but just a few detail elements we searched for and all placed within a tailored surrounding of bespoke joinery and upholstery. A year from being purchased, the house was alive again and this time beaming as the most impressive in the area. A new standard was set on the street and Sophie’s home was created. It was a reflection of her great taste, class and eclectic quality and our allied vision. Actually it proved to be a winning combination for the two of us to work together – ‘Spencer & Wedekind’ was founded as our new joint company, we were married and our son Alfie was born. www.spencerandwedekind.com
