DECOREX DIARY WHAT IS GOING ON AT LONDON’S MUST SEE INTERIORS SHOW

SEPTEMBER 18-21, SYON PARK, LONDON OPENING TIMES 18 September: 10am - 6pm (trade only) 19 September: 10am - 6pm (trade only) 20 September: 10am - 7pm (open to the public) 21 September: 10am - 5pm (trade only)

THE HERITAGE OF CHAIR MAKING Renowned British Furniture Designer, Tim Gosling, is curating the main entrance at this year’s Decorex International. Embracing this year’s show theme, the roots of design, Tim will be constructing a spectacular exhibition called ‘The Heritage of Chair Making’ that documents the links between interior design, architecture and the exceptional heritage of British craftsmanship through the ages. Gosling comments: ‘The UK has some of the most important furniture collections in the world, but due to conservation, it is not always possible to put them on public display. Thanks to the support of the V&A and The Frederick Parker Collection, I am delighted to be curating an exhibition of chairs, which includes many of these rare and extraordinary pieces.’

CHAMPAGNE BAR

DECOREX INTERNATIONAL is the UK’s leading design show and the only one of its kind in the UK for the luxury interiors market. Established in 1978, Decorex - now in its 39th year - is firmly recognised among the international design community as the trusted resource for high-end interior designers, architects, specifiers, retailers and property developers. Boasting nearly 400 exhibitors from leading names to emerging talents, this annual four-day show takes place each September in the prestigious location of Syon Park. Decorex will explore ‘the roots of design’ as its theme for 2016 edition. Examining the origins of design, which continue to define and shape the future of the industry, Decorex partnered established names with emerging designers to mark the start of this year’s campaign. One of the first destinations to open the 2016 London Design Festival, Decorex will explore the theme through a series of interactive installations and its popular seminar programme. Visitors at the show will experience how true design is built on a rich heritage, constantly evolving to incorporate new techniques and materials. Commenting on what the roots of design means to him: Sebastian Cox says ‘I strongly believe that by looking at the roots of design we can continue to make things that don’t adhere to short lived trends; by looking at our roots we can make things that remain beautiful for centuries.’ For more information, visit www.decorex.com

London design studio, 1508 London, has been chosen to create this year’s prestigious Champagne Bar. Examining the roots of design, this year’s show theme, to create a dialogue for the space. Expect a design that reinterprets classical architectural principles for a modern audience. Louise Wicksteed, Creative Director at 1508, says ‘The Champagne Bar is always a popular space at Decorex and we are delighted to be designing this year’s installation. Inspired by the roots of classical architecture, our space explores a deconstructed version of classicism. The simple geometric shapes, sculptural details and paired back palette will create an elegant but playful installation. We can’t wait to share our vision with the visitors and exhibitors at this year’s show.’

THE RETURN OF STONE FLOORS They are now as impressive as those from the past says Jason Cherrington

D

ecorative stone floors have been a feature of domestic interiors and public spaces for centuries. Despite being such a fundamental part of our European design heritage, in the 1960’s and 70’s, stone floors lost ground to other materials, especially in the home. For all its exceptional beauty and durability, stone was viewed as too cold, too hard to maintain and just plain old-fashioned. It took until the 1990’s for stone to find its feet again. People realised that stone need no longer be cold with the advent of modern underfloor heating and could be easily maintained with new generation sealants. From raw blocks hewn from the quarry to a finished floor, there are countless artisanal processes requiring everything from brute strength to the finest, most delicate understanding of what the final product will yield. The design and manufacture stages have been given new horizons with the introduction of leading edge technologies, from CAD to water jet and CNC cutting. Technology has made manufacture easier. Stone has become more user friendly. Designers are exploring colour, texture and decoration once more, confidently mixing the traditional with the contemporary and emphasising the sheer luxury of natural materials. Geometrics and trompe l’oeil designs are amongst today’s key trends. Lobbies and halls have always provided a perfect setting for patterned floors, but now the concept is being taken through into many other areas. Custom designed stone floors can also be extremely effective when used to subtly signal different ‘zones’ within open plan spaces. Bathrooms are another area where decorative floors are firmly on trend. At the very top end of the luxury interiors market, wholly

bespoke inlaid marble floors have also become increasingly popular and ornate. The delicacy and precision with which countless colours of marble and semi-precious materials can be cut and combined to create intricate designs underlines just how relevant and vibrant stone craft remains today. From the simplest to the most complex of designs, decorative stone floors have once again become as luxurious and impressive as anything history can show us. ON AN INDUSTRIAL SCALE Peter Sallick says 19th Century design taps into a desire for provenance

T

here is a growing sense that people want to connect with something that is comfortable and familiar. This became apparent during the financial crisis when many of us were drawn to spaces that were warm and cosy as opposed to cold and contemporary. Whether it was shops, restaurants or hotels, industrial and vintage style became popular as it has a heritage and familiarity that people relate to in an emotional sense, so as a design aesthetic it satisfies a need to feel secure. When you work with references that have been around for decades you can be confident the product you are designing will stand the test of time. Modern style has its place but when you make something of the moment there is the risk that what is contemporary today will look dated tomorrow. That is not to say that it has to be either/or, no-one wants to live in a museum, and what is interesting in interior design now is very much a personal mix of old and new, with traditional and modern pieces in the same environment. The backlash against mass production and cheap imports has also played its part. Customers value quality materials and craft based manufacturing techniques that have been used for centuries. All over the world people are interested in where the things they buy come from, whether that’s food or faucets. When things are made where they have always been made in the traditional way, there is a sense of place and provenance which means these items have become high quality, luxury pieces. However, they do need to be presented in new ways. 64

Bridge for Design Decorex Special 2016

It’s not just about replicating what has gone before. There is still a need to innovate; to take the best of yesteryear and to present it in a way that works for modern lifestyles. Over recent decades the role of the kitchen has changed considerably. No longer just a place for food preparation it has become the heart of the home; a social space for entertaining, working and relaxing. Kitchen manufacturers have adapted to that, designing pieces that are not just functional but beautiful and stylish too. We have seen ‘white goods’ become status symbols and in the same way that someone may chose an over-sized premium brand fridge, extractor or range cooker, they now have the option to buy sinks and taps on a similar industrial scale. Items which incorporate authentic design, quality craftsmanship and advanced engineering and are as much a focal point as the cooking zone. People want to have something special and our choice of colour palettes, finishes and configurations allows consumers or interior designers to create a scheme that is completely unique. It’s an evolution and an exploration of ideas that allows someone to customise and personalise their space. A kitchen should look good for 20 years or more and when you take the perspective that the room will live for a long time, the last thing you want is for it to feel trendy or that it will soon date. By working with classic designs that have been proven over a long period of time you can trust in its longevity and timeless appeal. Spanish street artist Nuria mora has designed a colourful hand-stitched wool cushion for Fine Cell Work. Known for her vibrant murals that give life to walls, she now brings her vibrancy to the Nuria Mora cushion that will brighten up any interiors. ‘Decorex lets us showcase our work to the world’s leading interior designers. It has led to superb collaborations with top interior designers such as Kit Kemp, John Stefanidis and Ben Pentreath, as well as commissions from luxury hotels, the most recent being Sopwell House,’ said Victoria Gillies, Managing Director, Fine Cell Work.

DECOREX NEWS

New Craftsmen The New Craftsmen present the Crafthouse, a series of interactive roomsets exploring the fundamental characteristics of what makes a home by studying the domestic rituals by which we live. The Crafthouse, located in four separate areas within Decorex, will look to reconsider and question craft and how it is used in our lives, with makers taking up residency in each roomset, contextulising them within a familiar environment and pushing them to the limits of their skills.

The Roots of Design Decorex International 2016 will explore the roots of design; considering the origins of design, the processes involved and examining the influences that have challenged its DNA. From customs and culture, these influences have shaped design today. The journeys (routes) taken, have ensured luxury design is constantly evolving, whilst retracing its roots and building on its rich heritage. Roots of Design can mean many things to people, here are the thoughts of a few designers.

‘Roots of Design is everything that has come before that finished product, it’s thinking about the way the product is made, the inspiration behind the product and who made it... the story behind the product.’ - Tom Raffield

Annemarie O’Sullivan,

Gareth Neal

How To Get To Decorex

‘Roots of Design is more where craft begins and where creativity starts, working with new creative people to come up with new ideas which develop into what can become fashionable or the beginning of something...’ - Martin Hulbert

By Train: Osterley Station Decorex recommend travelling to Osterley Tube Station which is served by Piccadilly Line where you can take a complimentary shuttle bus to Syon Park which leaves every 20 minutes. The first bus will leave 9:00am, and the last bus will leave Decorex one hour after the show closes.

‘As a designer, you look for meaning in everything and you’ve got to start somewhere when you design. For me, the roots are the origins of architecture, the history of the client and in combination that’s where you start designing from, you use it as your guidance to build on.’ - Staffan Tollgard

Richmond Station: No trains will be running from Richmond on Sunday 18th September, there will be additional trains to and from Waterloo Station to Syon Lane. From 18th September - 21st September, a complimentary bus service will be running regularly with the first bus leaving at 9:00am, and the last bus will leave Decorex one hour after the show closes.

Future Heritage Future Heritage will be returning again, once again curated by design and applied arts critic, Corinne Julius after last year’s exceptional selection from leading makers. Exclusively for 2016, this select group of makers will be presenting new work and processes that can be commissioned by interior designers and architects for use in their projects, such as lighting, flooring, and sound absorbent, fire resistant textiles. All of the designer/maker practices have been chosen for their innovation and mastery across a range of craft skills from ceramic to electronics and all will be creating new work especially for Decorex. This includes interactive, immersive lighting installations by Tangent, who interweave electronics, robotics and computer programming with design to create magical experiences, as well as intriguing ceramic and glass lighting installations by Vezzini & Chen Sarah Stafford

Charlotte Morgan Mediterranean Blues Channelling the cool vibes of faraway shores, these expressive blue patterns are an eye pleasing affair. The Mediterranean Blues are a pretty, elegant as well as a subtle series of tile-like designs. The simplistic shapes are a nod to historic aboriginal designs whilst the perfect pairing of deep blue and simple white hark to Mediterranean interiors. Audubon Birds This stunning collection of birds, handpicked by Martin Trowbridge originate from the John James Audubon’s Birds of America Collection. Born in Haiti in 1785, then raised in Nantes, France, Audubon took a lively interest in birds, nature, drawing, and music. In 1803, he embarked on a voyage to America. He lived on family property near Philadelphia, where he hunted, studied, and drew IPYKZ >OPSL [OLYL OL JVUK\J[LK [OL ÄYZ[ RUV^U IPYK IHUKPUN L_WLYPTLU[ PU 5VY[O (TLYPJH I` [`PUN Z[YPUNZ HYV\UK [OL SLNZ VM Eastern Phoebes. In 1826, Audubon was quite literally an overnight success. His life-sized and highly dramatic bird portraits, along with his embellished descriptions of wilderness life, hit just the right note at the height of the Continent’s Romantic era. Audubon later collaborated with the Scottish ornithologist William MacGillivray on the Ornithological Biographies. John James Audubon’s Birds of America is a portal into the natural world. It contains 435 life-sized watercolours of North American birds (Havell edition), all reproduced from hand-engraved plates, and is considered to be the archetype of wildlife illustration.
