WHAT INSPIRES ME Homes and public buildings built in the 17th and 18th centuries are more beautiful than anything being created today

A

mong the architects and interior designers who have inspired me most are Sir John Vanburgh, Nicholas Hawksmoor, Charles Cameron, Giacomo Quarenghi and Sir John Soane. More recently, I would add Edwin Lutyens, Norman Foster and a small number of interior designers as well as Thomas Heatherwick, who is brilliantly inventive and clever. The finest homes and public buildings built in the 17th and 18th centuries are far more beautiful than anything being created today but that is largely because our value systems have changed. Most people, including those with money, now tend to have a relatively short-term perspective on projects and are more likely to be motivated by gadgets, communication, fashion and travel, than culture and the arts which, sadly, are often seen as rather elitist. So while Norman Foster is on my list of people who inspire me, that is more to do with his talent at identifying and solving the challenges involved with a project. Vanburgh’s Baroque houses, Hawksmoor’s unmistakeably bold, masculine and confident designs and Cameron’s opulent, daring and imaginative interiors created for Catherine The Great all move me much more than any contemporary design. The same is true of the way in which Quarenghi took Russian Classicism to a new level and Soane’s extraordinary understanding of space and light. Lutyens’ reinvention of Classicism and his knack for making a building look as though it has always been there is also inspirational. In my view, nobody working today has capped the elegance achieved by Soane or Vanburgh two or three hundred years ago. Most contemporary architects no longer care about creating beautiful buildings – they want to make their mark and shock people. But how long does that shock last for and does anyone want to live with it for any length of time? It takes far more skill to create a space which is appreciated every day, year after year. I quite often hear from people who are disgruntled with their architect because they can’t get them to listen to what they actually want. When Fayland House, designed by David Chipperfield Architects, beat off global competition to win The Architectural Review’s House Awards 2015, the judges explained their decision by using words such as ‘uncomfortable’ and ‘subversive’ but are those qualities which a client really wants? For me, comfort and elegance sound far more appealing. One of one the buildings which most inspires me is Ven House, which I was lucky enough to buy from Jasper Conran last year. It is a Grade I manor house in Somerset which was completed at the end of the 17th century and extended in the 1720s and then altered again by Thomas Cubitt and Decimus Burton in 1835-36. The house embodies everything I strive to achieve in architecture and interior design. For

48

me, the success of its design makes the house feel like a celebration of life. Jasper did a wonderful job with the house and in many ways it is the first project I have ever worked on where I don’t really want to change a thing. I am gently bringing the house into the twenty-first century by making the house a little more liveable in and also by introducing some contemporary art amongst the old masters. The restrictions on what I cannot do don’t bother me at all as I love what is already there. I feel like the luckiest man in the world when I arrive at Ven for the weekend. Interior designers are generally much more in tune with the way people live their lives than architects, but that doesn’t mean I find many of them particularly inspiring. I certainly rated David Hicks and Nancy Lancaster and another designer who will always inspire me is Bunny Roger. It is vital for creative people to have the courage of their own convictions and Bunny never cared what anyone else thought. He was extraordinarily brave. One of the few people who really fires my imagination today is Thomas Heatherwick. I recently went to see his design for the Garden Bridge, which will link the South Bank with the Embankment by the top of Temple tube. It is astonishing. Heatherwick’s breadth of skills is reminiscent of some of the greatest early Georgian architects – several of whom were also accomplished dramatists and artists. Heatherwick is a maverick but he also pays attention to tradition – and that makes him very different to most other architects and designers today. TAKE THE TREND TEST If something is truly classic, its popularity will resurface time and time again

A

s we toured the Sutton Place, a New York City apartment my client recently purchased from an estate sale, my very young associate sniffed, “this looks so dated.” I agreed with her, but I remembered that mitered mylar wallpapers were all the rage, along with hugely graphic black and white porcelain floors, not so long ago. I suspect my 21st century, stylish associate was unaware of the pervasive influence of Angelo Donghia as far back as the 1960s. “What were they thinking?” she said as her eyes caught the over-scaled, taupe, faux-bamboo bookcase. “And this ditsy little flowered print in the kitchen, can you believe it?” she gaped - a favourite of Sister Parish Designs. Her youthful incredulity at these iconic examples of the past only reminded me how rapidly the fashion for interior design changes, just as the fashion in clothing mutates by the day. So we spoke of these various influences as we walked through the apartment’s time warp. We talked of the influence of Angelo Donghia and how his broad-strokes glamour appealed to the 70s bold, graphic sensibility. We spoke of Baldwin’s love of chinoiserie and how that bit of exoticism appealed to a generation cleaning off the cobwebs of staid, formal rooms. And we talked about Sister Parish’s country house kinship, where chintzy fabrics, quilts and cotton plaids de-stuffed a generation yearning for pretty. As we walked out of the apartment, we reminisced about this year’s trends and influences on design. What seems so current, trendy, chic, hip and irresistibly fashionable and appealing now that might render a home or apartment dated in the future? The first word out of both our mouths was “grey!” It is not simply the movie and its many shades; this colour has infiltrated everything from fabrics to finishes to stone selections. I recently wandered through a fabulous stone yard, and a third of the stone imports were some variation on the theme of grey. While other manufacturers seem to be reinventing the wheel, there are some so innovative, who capture the imagination of the design world so intensely, they raise up the whole genre. Phillip Jeffries’ creative take on

50

Bridge for Design July 2016

grasscloth, for instance, has spawned a burgeoning industry. So hot is the demand for this wallcovering, and so intense is the love of this texture, that designers can’t hold at only hanging it on their walls. Now, they are also wrapping chests of drawers, bedside tables, and consoles with grasscloth. 2016 will be noted for its embrace of Southeast Asian and Indian embroideries so complex, so elaborate and so affordable that one would think we had returned to the Gilded Age. Notable has been the revival of Chinese hand-painted murals lining the walls of entryways, dining rooms and parlors. Their elegant figures of brides, bamboo, Chinese landscapes and tea houses have even made their way back to the forefront of the fabric world, printed on curtain-worthy cottons - a highly elegant and romantic alternative to the world of sharper geometrics. If you are in the market for a standing tub, they have never been more available than now. It is not simply the exquisite designs created by English, French and Italian companies but American companies, such as American Standard and Kohler, are creating gorgeous pieces as well. Some trends find a quick denouement. The carpet industry has gone gaga for splatter-art rugs with massive, messy, spotted repeats that may mimic, but certainly won’t endure compared to the book-matched marble masterpieces. So the upshot of my conversation with my associate was a teaching moment for both of us. We, as designers and interior aficionados, have an upto-date vision that we always try to keep current. If something is truly classic, its popularity will resurface time and time again. However, with social media making things more visible and attainable, these newer trends tend to come in and out of fashion more rapidly than ever, making it almost impossible to get ahead of the curve. I am fairly certain that the designer who created the apartment we are now gutting considered his/her work timeless. And we also consider our work timeless, though I suppose it’s only until the next gut job occurs. Perhaps we should simply do the best work we can to enjoy and celebrate the moment in time.

A TASTE OF THE ORIENT Hand painted decoration and their meanings add exceptional character to interior design says Jemma page

T

he continuing trend for shades of grey used for the blank canvas has given an important make-over to the use of colour in design projects today. Art galleries have long used grey for walls and backdrops as it is proven to propel colour to the fore - especially in the poor light of the temperate UK climate - whereas the more yellow tones of creams and beige perform slightly better in Mediterranean and tropical lights. As a result, vibrant colour is playing an increasingly important role in designer’s projects, with furniture and fabrics working even harder to appeal to this trend whilst the hunt for the statement, one off designs with the importance of provenance, is definitely rising. Asian design is a fusion of many different styles that range from the Chinese, the Japanese and the exotic Indian themes. But, for most, it is often dominated by the belief in oriental influences that have originated in the Far East several centuries ago. Hand painted decoration and the meanings in Eastern designs have added exceptional character to interior design for many years but, with the trend to have eclectic interiors - mixing the old with the new, there is an increasing amount of pressure to find statement items for both residential and commercial interiors. This is accomplished with Chinese items which definitely have a mystical feel to them. We have seen a rise in interest for pieces of furniture and accessories which have provenance in terms of a previous life. For example, the most common 52

Bridge for Design July 2016

decoration to be found hand-painted on Chinese furniture includes bats symbolising good fortune, pomegranates whose seeds represent fertility, and pairs of dragons at play in the sky representing good luck. Oriental designs are largely inspired by colour and an Eastern themed interior is truly complete with vibrant accent hues that stand out when placed in a calm, neutral setting. For centuries it is said that every room should have at least one item of red in it; a cushion or an accessory. It is true that once a spot of red is introduced, the dynamics change and change again substantially if this item is removed. Large cabinets and altar tables in the traditional red oxide, a colour which represents extreme good fortune in Chinese culture, present beautiful centre-pieces or schemes. In the developing market, there seems to also be more interest in using cobalt blues, pretty pinks seen in blossom and jade green lacquers adding a texture to the modern scheme. This leaning towards bold, eclectic interiors where loud and clear focal points for on trend shades can cleverly and unexpectedly be introduced to a scheme lends itself to Eastern influences. Decorators will always need to combine neutrals alongside strong colours and the elegant touches of metallics which seems to continue to be a popular element. The exquisite golden tones alongside the black lacquer in Chinese furniture brings a warm, majestic finish to a living room. Now is the time for the versatility of Oriental furniture, with its vivacious colour palette and influences to move into the realm of interior design.

IBIZA VILLA THE BRIEF: to provide a party space and chill out area incorporating the pool house and terraces

his country estate in the north of Ibiza comprises of a 3-bedroom house, surrounded by two hectares of lush gardens in which two additional houses provide a further two bedrooms and en-suites. Although the main building and inherited design was very handsome, the internal design had been sadly neglected, so the clients instructed TG Studio to makeover the interior as well as re-designing the terraces and pool house. Planning restrictions forbid the extension of the building so work had to be done within the confines of the existing building.

To make the most of the stunning grounds and lush environment beyond, the brief was to provide a party space and chill out area incorporating the pool house and terraces. An outdoor dining area is covered by a roof supported on huge Balinese columns, which perfectly frame the scenery from the range of contemporary furniture filling the terrace, inviting guests to sit down and enjoy the view. The pool house was extended using galvanised wood and re-organised to house a large bar with two built in fridges, two dishwashers, a music system, a grill and a woodfire pizza oven. The wooden pool house sofas and coffee tables were designed by TG-Studio and made by Ibizan

On the inside, the main room features 4-metre high ceilings and large sliding glass doors so that in Summer the living room doubles up with the outside terrace. TG-Studio also installed a new wood burning fireplace with flamed granite base and black steel back; this feature holds a 70 inch TV and surround sound system, as well as hiding a double height towel storage room. In one corner an alcove, originally a bread oven, has been uncovered and opened up into the main living space to provide a very large chill out snug. A circular roof light and four different shaped windows with yellow tinted glass allow the light to flood in and make a feature of the unusual space. A large selection of cushions in contrasting prints and colours from Ferm Living and Tasca invite guests to sit and relax. The original kitchen was completely demolished and TG-Studio installed a state of the art Doca kitchen with Gagganeu appliances. Flame black granite work tops are contrasted with grey tinted mirrored backsplash and painted white oak doors to give a contemporary and minimalist appearance. The en-suite bedrooms in this villa are masterpieces in understated glamour. The first bedroom has a neutral colour scheme accented with a geometric print grey rug. One wall contains sliding doors onto its own side terrace, whilst its en-suite features a bespoke bath by a local manufacturer that sits upon a mosaic stone tile floor, overlooked by a giant wooden sculpture. The second bedroom has a subtle Moroccan influence and has its own en-suite, again featuring a bespoke sculpted bath to fit the client’s brief of an eclectic feel. NANTUCKET BEACH HOUSE A modern but classic beach house on the south coast of Nantucket island delights with equal parts sun, surf and serenity WORDS JENNIFER SPERRY | PHOTOGRAPHS NAT REA 86

O

ver 25 years ago, the client visited Nantucket for the first time at her husband’s urging, and ever since the pair has envisioned their own beachfront Summer home. Vacation-hopping around Nantucket’s hotels and cottages for years, the Boston-based couple ultimately fell in love with Surfside on the island’s South coast. It is a beach lover’s paradise. In 2001, the family found just the right piece of Surfside for sale. A quick walk down the property’s front lawn leads directly to Surfside Beach. ‘It’s why we love this location,’ explains the wife.

Assembling a team of Nantucket-based design firms, including BPC Architecture, Cross Rip Development, and Donna Elle Interior Design, they began realising their dream of a casual vacation retreat with a sophisticated edge. They decided to rebuild the property’s existing home - a simple Cape, it lacked a compelling history and its orientation greatly limited water views. ‘They wanted their new home to feel like the setting of an old story from long ago,’ says Donna Elle. ‘They wanted it to feel like it had been preserved.’ ‘We broke up the home into three masses - the main entry and bedroom wing; living room; and kitchen, dining room, and master suite - to lessen its impact on

the lot and to take advantage of light and views,’ says Joe Paul of BPC Architecture. The resulting L-shaped footprint mimics the feel of one older, original structure added on to over time. Paul decided that, in his design, the living room would be the new home’s oldest part. Exposed studs and roughhewn oak rafters, all hand-rubbed with pigment stain to make them look timeworn, contribute to the room’s aged appearance. Horizontal wood panelling, painted in Benjamin Moore Harbor Haze, evokes the look of classic beach cottages found along Surfside. The goal for the interior overall was ‘something beachy and comfortable that is at the same time contemporary and upscale,’ describes the wife. Both Paul and Elle agreed on the term ‘beach chic’ to summarise this vision. Elle settled on a palette of whites, soft blues, and greys, pulling colors from the surrounding landscape. Artistic furnishings fulfill the owners’ quest for chic tempered by a lived-in spirit. ‘Any finish or fabric had to pass a litmus test, in my eyes, which was: will it hold up to bathing suits and sandy feet just as well as to elegant

cocktail parties?’ summarises Elle. Statement pieces in the living room include a coffee table by Florida artist James Duncan. Its base of found driftwood is topped by extra thick beveled glass, custom crafted to Elle’s dimensions. Twin chandeliers, comprised of copper frames entwined with wooden beads, were made from Belgian wine barrels and sourced from BoBo Intriguing Objects in Atlanta, Georgia. In the more formal dining area, Elle mixed contemporary Philippe Starck Lucite chairs and upholstered armchairs over a luxurious wool-and-silk area rug in a soumak weave from Stark Carpet. A room with unique appeal, dubbed the social bar by Paul, separates the kitchen and dining room. Created in response to the owners’ desire for an entertaining focal point, the space is a more creative host than the kitchen island. Using a boat hull as inspiration, the architect drew an oval-shaped bar, complete with footrails, long enough to accommodate six bar stools. Its contemporary metalclad base purposefully contrasts the home’s prevalent use of wood. Elle grouped Belgian wine jugs, retrofitted

The owners love entertaining, and in turn, ‘most of our guests don’t want to leave,’ laughs the wife. Visitors have a choice between a guest suite on the first floor or a guesthouse above the garage. Similarly, the couple’s two grown children have their own bedrooms on the second level, apart from the main living areas. Above the screened-in porch, facing the ocean, is the secluded master suite, which benefits from plenty of southern light as well as a private balcony. ‘There’s nothing like falling asleep to the sound of waves at night,’ admit the owners.

his Madrid apartment is located in Barrio Las Salesas, a highly fashionable neighbourhood with an array of art galleries, boutiques, hotels, bars and restaurants. Designer Aimee Joaristi took inspiration from the atmosphere and characteristics of the area and mimicked this in her styling for the house and its furnishings. Built in the late nineteenth century shortly after the neoclassical movement, the original floorplan was typical of townhouses of the period. It consisted of multiple small alcoves where windows did not provide much ventilation and was built with a central corridor acting as the main axis of the building. To fulfil the brief for this project, the whole building was subsequently renovated and the floorplan reworked. Hallways were relocated, made FRONT: View of one end of the open-plan living space looking towards wall-to-wall shelving surrounding the fireplace LEFT: Light floods into the open-plan living area from three pairs of French windows ABOVE: Four gilt-framed antique prints hang on the wall above a lit bateau upholstered with a richly patterned gold and red silk and covered in an eclectic mix of cushions

easy by the square shape of the alcoves, and the original ceiling height was recovered to give an open and roomy feel to the main spaces. Exposing some of the former wooden columns also provided texture to the townhouse, and gave an interesting focal perspective into the room. ‘This house had something which captured my heart – the divine natural light,’ says Aimee. Removing room partitions opened up the space even further creating a more flexible open-plan room, where clients can choose how to use the space based on their personal preferences. decisions which would reflect the natural light around the entire space by painting the walls, ceilings and floors in different shades of white. This neutral tone permitted the introduction of bright colours; pops of blues, reds and pinks litter the house and add a fun and bold artistic feel to the décor. Colourful fabrics, such as velvets, were combined with white textiles to create an attractive contrast of colour, allowing attention to be drawn to particular pieces of furniture and decorative objects. seventeenth centuries, take centre stage in the house. They were collected by the father of the owner and each represent an important stage of life in Spanish culture. The walls are also heavily decorated with artworks from a range of famous artists, including Spanish painter Diego Velazquez, Gordillo and Nino, as well as the work of Designer Aimee Joaristi herself. Aimee’s pieces add a splash of colour to the interior creating a sense of humour which contrasts with the classic artworks. This townhouse is a celebration of Madrid’s creative and artistic atmosphere, and its bold use of colours, artworks and antiques has perfectly captured the heart and aura of the city. Its clever use of the unique and contemporary mixed in amongst the traditional and antique has left the building with an eclectic feel that perfectly captures the heart and essence of the quirky neighbourhood in which it sits. 100 Bridge for Design July 2016

ithin the heart of the vast expanses of green of Frioul, the set designer Giuseppe Mangia lives in a world of his own creation; an old farmhouse refurbished under the watchful eye of the architect Silvia Pedron. Originally from Salento, Giuseppe Mangia holds the region where he was born close to his heart even if he had lived at the other end of the Italian boot since he was a child. After having studied business and trade, he finally decided to give his creative desires free reign and become a set designer. His apprenticeship was long and challenging, yet also fruitful. Today, as an associate of Studio Eye, he collaborates with renowned fashion and design brands based in Italy, such as Moroso, Foscarini and Mutina ceramiche.

His pace of life is intense. It became essential for him to find a calm and peaceful place to live between his travels. With a friend, he went back and forth across the countryside surrounding Udine until he found an old farm, flanked by two brick barns and a large gravel courtyard. The only remnant of the past garden is an old elm tree on the edge of the property, overlooking the road. Giuseppe very quickly saw the potential of the site; encouraged by his architect friend Silvia Pedron, he embarked on this adventure. ‘A real adventure, because whilst the works were taking place I lived on-site, I wanted to dedicate my time to the restoration by working with the masons and artisans.’ ‘Everything needed to be reviewed’ Silvia Pedron continues, ‘the house had lost its soul, we needed to strip everything down.’ They had to strip back the walls to discover the bricks and river stones underneath, take the plaster off the walls, Bridge for Design July 2016 105

remove a recently laid floor to install an underground crawl space then pour the concrete floor, create light by installing glass doors in place of the windows and open up the indoor spaces in order to emphasise the long outlook. They connected the living area to one of the barns which had been used as a garage; and then freed up the staircase that leads upstairs to give the impression of volume through creating a double height atrium. However the upstairs, designed as the night quarters, has kept its original layout - the rooms follow on from one another, looking onto a corridor where the redesigned windows bring in natural light. ‘Here, the white tones dominate, bringing light and tranquility,’ says Silvia. Giuseppe has a green thumb and has devoted himself to the garden. In front of the house, the gravel has disappeared to make room for an open meadow where his two dogs, Mia and Lillo, can run around. Following on from this meadow, a hanging garden sets the tone; on different levels, wooden paths cross over small patches of river stones. The structure is embellished with pruned boxwood hedges which alternate with plants that are left to grow freely. The collection of monumental agaves and succulents present everywhere provide an insight into Giuseppe’s native Salento. The wall of the neighbouring house serves as a backdrop, which is ideally suited to the boundless expansiveness of the Virginia Creeper. rose bushes with white petals climb the walls, taking turns with the blossoming wisteria which stretches up to the top of the windows. The old fence backing onto the street has been replaced by a tall wall. At its base, imposing custom-built concrete basins hold crowded bamboo plants, rippling in the slightest breeze. The decoration reflects the creative universe of the master of the house; it is a well thought out and explosive blend which brings together recycled materials, such as the steel panels in the kitchen and the wood covering the wall adjoining the stairs and reclaimed objects from photo shoots, using superb pieces signed by the biggest names in the design industry. Everything is serene and harmonious. It emanates a friendly and unusual atmosphere, ideal for new projects. 108 Bridge for Design July 2016
