A sparkling splash of entertainment Rebecca Weir and Johnny Grey put a contemporary twist on an indoor swimming pool

ohnny Grey had a surprising and unusual request which turned into a challenging and exciting concept, when he was approached by a client with a indoor swimming pool project. Johnny dislikes indoor swimming pool’s slabs of ceramic tiles and often monochrome paint work, but the architectural aspect of this project was unusual – it needed to match a collection of Japanese inspired wooden houses imported from California. Constructed in Oregon pine, mostly rough hewn, with bark stripped tree trunks, it had a positively graspable aesthetic, with its imperfect finishes evoking a ‘back to nature’ response. He has created a sumptuous space that is dramatic and beautiful by both day and night.

Mixing traditional stone and huge wooden beams with contemporary glass and lighting, this swimming pool area includes a spa, relaxed seating and bespoke changing areas and all with a view into the gardens outside. Bold and unique features add a splash of colour to the changing areas, including a fuschia themed room and wooden dividers with colourful glass sections. The piece de resistance is a bespoke bench and shelf, made from a combination of dark wood and crisp, white Corian. He worked closely with Rebecca Weir, Design Director of Light IQ to create a lighting scheme to compliment and enhance the space. The exterior lighting had to be subtle enough to sit quietly within the forest setting. The sculptural qualities of the build are accentuated with tiny up-lights whilst linear under-lighting of the exterior ►

ABOVE: Lighting under the steps makes it seem that the building is floating LEFT: A bar area ensures a full entertaining experience
as steps create the sensation that the pavilion ‘floats’ on the man-made pond. Discrete light fittings were tucked in to the eaves to light the balconies and prevent the ‘black mirror’ effect at night. The creation of the pond to reflect our dramatic ‘lantern’ at night reinforces the sculptural silhouette and the drama of the lighting scheme. Low hanging fibre optics over the pool were purposefully left long for greater visual impact. The additional sparkle wheel and colour ensures a subtle movement, which is reflected across the dark surfaces at night. LEDs were used throughout the pool pavilion to ensure the lighting scheme was driven by energy efficiency, drama and low maintenance. A pre-set control system ensures each member of the family has their own preferred light setting, this can be controlled both internally within the building as well as from the main house through the use of their iPads. Light IQ have been shortlisted for this innovative lighting scheme in the International Product Design Awards 2014. B

Vessel Gallery presents a spectacular new lighting collection by studio Odd Matter. Taking traditional copper plating techniques as their catalyst; sumptuous stained glass panels in rich shades of ruby, amber and mother of pearl are held in place by copper strips which are immersed overnight in an electro-plating bath. THE ART OF LIGHTING Rebecca Weir looks at ways of throwing some light onto your prized collections
O
ften I am asked ‘What is the correct way to light a piece of art ?’ Experience confirms that this subject is extremely emotive and subjective. We are currently lighting the homes of several collectors whose thoughts on the subject are startlingly different. The question is whether to re-create the vast even illumination of an artists studio, pin spot perfectly with a framing projector, create discrete scollops of light accentuating individual pieces or embrace the wonderful tradition of the picture light. All these methods work well and can be applied with varying success depending on a number of factors. These include, whether the art work is framed, glazed, acrylic, pencil or oil, traditional or modern as well as most importantly the context in which the painting sits.
1
Too often down lights are set in a grid-like formation with little consideration for what they might be lighting and therefore they are set too far off the walls to be of use. The position of down lights is critical to the success of lighting any space not just for lighting artwork. A spot-lit piece of art or sculpture at the end of a corridor will draw your eye and visually lead you whilst a lit painting above a fireplace will create a focal point to the room. 36
Bridge for Design Lighting
2
Galleries often combine several of the above lighting techniques with general even wall washing punctuated with defined pools of light allowing the artwork to take central stage. The most important piece within the gallery may also be subject to slightly higher light levels ensuring it stands out from the crowd.
3
There are many ways to light art, often the soft glow of a table lamp will provide the gentlest illumination in which to appreciate a piece. However, from the requirement of a simple socket to ensuring the correct cabling is installed at first fix for optimum flexibility and positioning, the most dramatic impression will be where the lighting has played the smallest part.

4
Second in universal popularity is the directional downlight, traditionally low voltage and now more often than not, LED. The trick with these is to ensure you know which fitting you are using in advance, so that you can calculate their position in relation to the angle of tilt and your ceiling height. Simple mathematics then allows you to work out their correct distance off the wall to light your art beautifully.
5
The tried and tested track system will always be the most flexible solution for the lighting of art which is why it is so popular in galleries. The freedom provided to so easily combine wall washing with spotlighting ensures optimal results every time. Track has progressed enormously with the ability to utilise multiple circuits as well as recessing it within slots and ceilings allowing it now to be installed more easily and discretely within the home.
6
The pricey powerhouse of the art world will always be the Framing Projector, a recessed light fitting installed and commissioned by specialists to highlight the exact dimensions of the painting or sculpture so there is no light spill. I have, however, discovered amongst collectors these are a little like marmite, some feel they provide too intense and dramatic a focal point where as others think they are the best invention ever to have been created. As illustrated the contrast between the right hand photograph which is lit by a projector whilst the left is lit by ambient light alone, the contrast is absolute.
7
One of my favourite techniques has always been the humble picture light. In the right setting, such as a beautiful panelled library, dining or drawing room the humble picture light when used well and often in groups can elevate a simple picture to the realm of a grand master. Picture lights assist in creating layers of ambient light with often the only additional light required to light a room will be a table lamp or two to create a softer more intimate light. The advancements in LED technology has ensured the humble picture light has been raised to compete on the same stage as other techniques. Tinier light sources, superb colour rendering and advancement in optics have brought picture lights in to the 21st century. 38

Over the past two years, working mainly with Interior Designers and using our in-house and workshop staff, we have created a support service for interior design projects that need temporary additional assistance.
