In his long and productive collaboration with Olivari, Gio Ponti focused on two types of approach to the design of handles. One was more organic, where the lever is offered to the hand’s grip as a sinuously modelled element. DUKE ELLINGTON THEATRE ‘EGG’ Washington D.C.’S Duke Ellington School of the Arts reopened last year following a multi-million dollar renovation. The modernisation project, designed by Joint Venture Partnership between Cox Graae + Spack Architects and Lance Bailey & Associates, has transformed the aging historic National Landmark into a top-tier student facility. The stunning design has struck a balance between restoring and respecting the original historic building while creating major new academic and performance spaces.The interior environment centres on a giant oval-shaped structure within the four-storey atrium - the Duke Ellington Theatre ‘egg’. Inside, is a full-sized 800 seat theatre complete with orchestra pit, lighting catwalks and high-performing acoustics. Advanced BIM modelling and 3D laser scanning techniques were employed for the complex design of the theatre. Once constructed, the outer shell was expertly hand-finished in Armourcoat polished plaster by local installers ACI/Senza Fine. The design team took inspiration from 38

piano keys for the interior, featuring crisp white wall finishes with black accents, paying homage to the iconic musician, composer and D.C. native Edward Kennedy ‘Duke’ Ellington. In total over 25,000 square metres of finishes were applied to the theatre, cafeteria walls and columns over three levels. Chris Ambridge, Associate Principal at CG+S Architects, commented ‘The choice to use Armourcoat came at the end of an extended process of exploring many options. The decision was important since the theatre is the centre piece at the heart of the school. We found a precedent in London of a similarly complex application and quickly became comfortable that Armourcoat was the right product for our project in terms of cost/schedule and aesthetics. The project team and client have been delighted with the end result; the finish is sophisticated and durable. THE GREAT LAND OF NOD Taking care when designing your bedroom will allow it to take care of you
T
he bedroom speaks to us of life’s simple pleasures and marks the beginning and end of every day in our life. It can sometimes appear to be the room less used in our homes but with sleep filling a third of our lives, perhaps it’s a lot more significant than we think. My question, as a designer, is how can we create better places for us to live in? After all, a better designed bedroom could make a huge difference to how we sleep and therefore how we feel. The key is understanding how our bodies work. All living things have a Circadian Rhythm, which is roughly a 24 hour cycle that our bodies go through. Humans are Diurnal animals, which means our Circadian Rhythm is programmed to have us awake during daylight and asleep during the night. With our body programmed to sleep when it gets dark, it needs to go through the process of powering down, which is stimulated by the sun set. So, have softer lighting in your bedroom and fit dimmer switches so it gets gradually darker throughout your nightime routine to fake twilight. Going dark with your colour scheme helps create nighttime indoors. Use blackout lining on your curtains and blinds, but don’t seal every aspect of light from coming through. The light from dawn will gently rouse you for the day. The comfort of our beds serves a vital role in our sleep and picking the right mattress and pillow are essential, so take the time to try a mattresses and pillows in store. Keep your mattress in good health by turning it regularly and replacing it when needed. It is thought that a regularly used mattress

will reach the end of its life between 5-10 years. With linens and duvet, buy the best your budget will allow and step away from the synthetics as they can over heat you. Relaxing before bed puts you in the right zone for heading off to the land of nod. Remove gadgets from the bedroom, including TVs. It is recommended that you stop using all gadgets one hour before going to sleep as these keep your brain active which makes it hard for it to switch off quickly. Clutter is also a sleep killer as well as a mood killer. It has been shown that clutter can be stress inducing, with cortisol readings the same as post-traumatic stress disorder. Keep the bedroom simple by only have things you need in there. Where most of us think cosy and warm makes us sleep well, in fact it is the opposite. Our body temperature needs to drop to stimulate sleep with Neuroscientist Matthew Walker, recommending a room temperature of 18.3°C. Set your thermostat to this temperature to be reached by the time you’re going to bed and use bedding that keeps you at an optimum temperature. I know some find blue an unappealing colour for bedrooms but I think it’s a great choice. It’s relaxing and gives a feeling of space. If blue isn’t your bag, then pick something else from the cooler end of the colour wheel. A red bedroom might sound sexy but is a disaster for mind and body! Taking care with your bedroom design will allow your bedroom to take care of you as you drift off and, as William Shakespeare wrote, ‘enjoy the honey-heavy dew of slumber.’

GOING WITH THE FLOW Show off your interior and gently guide the user through the space
F
lowing space is essentially the corner stone to all good design. A successful layout will guide you seamlessly through the different areas of an interior, allowing you to both visually appreciate the space and to actually use it. Logical flow and function are the main things to consider. There are various tricks to create these flowing spaces, which is essentially down to layouts, lighting and finishes. Always start with the layouts and detail the design from there. Look for your main walking path and make these wide enough, unobstructed and direct. People’s natural inclination is to move directly so let that happen and use furniture locations to guide people around. If for example you need people to walk around the back of a sofa, consider one with a curved back to encourage flow. If an area is functional or requires access, such as a regularly used cupboard or table and chairs, there needs to be a clear route to access and use these. Make sure the cupboard doors can open and the chairs are able to pull away from the table, with room for movement to allow flow behind. Give furniture room to breathe and don’t feel the need to fill every space or wall. Doors are a helpful tool to direct the flow. Often changing the side that a door swings from will ease the flow of a space. Historically doors would open into a room away from the adjacent wall to maintain privacy, though it is possible to swap it round so it leads you into the room. By keeping the number of finishes to a minimum you will be subtly guided to each new space by simplicity and consistency. For example, a ground floor with the same timber flooring, ceiling and woodwork throughout, accompanied by a variety of wall colours or finishes will

give the house a fantastic sense of flow and unity. This works especially well in smaller properties. Lighting is crucial to maintaining a calm continuation of space. Make sure you have the same tone of light bulbs throughout. You can also use light positions to encourage the flow through a connecting space. Use low level floor washing lights to guide people down a corridor, for example. Have lighting level options within each room, either with dimmers or on a system such as Lutron, and then set the same mood from room to room depending on the time of day. The last thing you want is nice warm low-level lighting in a sitting room and bright cool light in a linking corridor as it will appear harsh and break the sense of flow. The most challenging spaces to work with are definitely open plan. Their vast expanse of opportunity are wonderful, but you don’t want to feel lost in them nor for your furniture to be floating around in acres of space. Define areas with rugs and lighting so that each section has a function, and then link them with a clear route between each one. Long slim console tables are great for defining areas, and you can also consider adding in architectural features such as columns or short walls to divide up the space and guide the viewer round. Done successfully, you wouldn’t even notice the thought process behind it, but done badly the space will feel clumsy, awkward to orientate and un-relaxing to be in. You want to show your interior off and to gently guide the person through, allowing for the space to fulfill its function whilst also looking fantastic. Get the key elements of layout, lighting and finishes right and you can’t go wrong.

haracter in texture is one of the many great attractions of a hand knotted rug. Thanks to the use of only traditional handmade processes, even the simplest of rug designs has a beautiful absence of uniformity to its surface just like an original artwork. Bazaar Velvet goes a stage further incorporating many different textural effects into its designs. A new trend of textural effect found in hand knotted rugs is by using different pile heights. This can be used to add definition or to emphasise certain patterns or materials. However, some rug designers including Thibault Van Renne, are taking this to the extreme. Many of his designs feature several layers, blending designs of yesterday and today which give a truly magical effect. Once the rug is dismantled from the loom, the finishing begins which can take half a dozen people around 30 days to complete. The silk is carefully carved around by hand and kept at one pile height while the wool of the rug cut down to a lower pile height with extreme skill and precision. This allows elements of the traditional design and contemporary design to fuse together creating a unique effect.

ondon interior design studio Helen Green Design has just completed an apartment at Kings Library for specialist property developer Tenhurst. It joins the dynamic design studio’s portfolio, which spans listed townhouses in Belgravia and country homes in Sussex, as well as Caribbean hotels. This time, the studio was appointed to design a contemporary apartment within Kings Library, a listed former school located in the heart of Chelsea by renowned Edwardian architect Thomas J Bailey. Due to its location, the new four-bedroom pad boasts spectacular views across the gardens of Kings Chelsea. It has been designed to maximise light that streams through sash windows, while its double height ceilings give increased volume. The apartment’s location inside a place of learning is also alluded to in its design. Despite its grandeur, the corridor space has also been cleverly designed to create intimate areas including a modern take on a library featuring sporting memorabilia and artwork by Mao Wen Biao. staircase. The contemporary space was, like so many modern living areas, designed to be multi functional. For example, a billiards table uses pistons to lower to coffee table height, so that the space can then be used as a cinema, with horsehair panels used here to rebuff noise. Despite such innovations, Helen Green Design has worked to retain the integrity and revive the character of the old school building and even applied playful references of its former life in the design. In addition to the ‘library space’ in the corridor, the drawing room has its antique

Victorian desk, dual fireplaces, curiosity cabinet and wood paneling, all hinting at a headmaster’s study, while an artisanal glass cabinet in the dining room draws inspiration from the base of milk bottles in a distinctly cheeky way. In addition to these touches, other original architectural features are either incorporated into the new design or cleverly concealed. A new herringbone floor which has been crafted in oak mimics the brickwork floor preserved beneath, and listed tiles in the stairwell form the backdrop to a new, state of the art wine cellar.

Other clever references include a nod to the building’s place in cinema history. Once used as a location in the filming of the Oscar winning The Theory of Everything, there are references to the work in the bespoke pendant light fashioned from pages of that very book, as well as a bar that was crafted from hand painted artisan glass which was designed to convey the galaxy. - a cosy banquette, overlaid sheer screens separating the television and seating areas and curved bars stools for intimacy all add to the room’s mood. Throughout the living areas, oak herringbone flooring in a bespoke Thomas Bailey Grey finish complements the distinctly masculine palette, nowhere more so than in the dining room with its emerald greens, sage grey and cognac tones. This is overlooked by an extensive half-moon feature sash window, whose curtains use Lutron automation for ease of use. In the bedrooms, the masculine palette is replaced by lighter, softer tones. The master bedroom’s pale

green and creams give the space a serene feel, while copper detailing throughout adds a glamorous accent. A four-poster bed in bleached timber with gold detailing lends itself to the grandeur of the high ceilng, complemented by the Croquignole stool and Oona chair from the Helen Green Design Collection. A staircase from the master bedroom leads to a dressing room with a bespoke massage table at its heart. This unique joinery feature, along with all of the fitted lighting, case goods and upholstery in the apartment has been British made by skilled craftsmen. an intimate relationship between inside and out, benefitting from both barbeque and dining areas as well as a relaxed seating area around a fire pit. Inside or out, the livability of this studious apartment has been top of the list of priorities for Helen Green Design. nightsbridge might be the exact opposite of rural Connecticut, but that’s where one couple chose to move as a result of the husband’s job. They recruited Sims Hilditch design for the furnishings, and the brief for Emma Sims Hilditch and team was to combine the two types of living. Dividing their time between the two countries, the couple wanted the home to feel traditionally British yet still retain a modern American twist. One key requirement was that they would be entertaining business associates as well as hosting friends and family, so the schemes needed to be warm and inviting. ‘We used tones of rich browns, greys and blues to create a scheme that feels tranquil yet warm,’ Emma says.

Amazingly, the project only had a 12-week turnaround. ‘Our starting point was a fabric called Queen Anne Vine, from Chelsea Textiles, which we used for the sitting room curtains,’ Emma remembers. ‘It has beautiful two-tone mauve and teal hand embroidery and we pulled those colours through the entire house to give the scheme cohesion,’ she adds. Moving through the home, luxurious textured wallpaper was paired with velvety floor treatments and hand embroidered fabrics to add to the sense of light and depth. Bespoke cabinetry was used throughout, such as the television and bar cabinet in the sitting room, which was combined with tailor-made furnishings to create a welcoming ‘home away from home’.

Natural fabrics are a key element, set alongside painted, dark furniture made by Sims Hilditch’s joiner, bespoke sofas, armchairs and ottomans as well as lighting from Vaughan. Emma says her favourite elements of the decoration include the four poster bed in the master bedroom, the consoles in the kitchen and conservatory, an antique French margin mirror in the drawing room and a stunning, 16-candle chandelier with Prato finish. However, Emma believes that while the location of the flat was brilliant, it threw up some challenges. ‘It was a wonderful opportunity to use inspiration from our English country designs to reflect this in a beautiful property within the heart of the city. There were many factors to consider while trying to create a country feel in the centre of Knightsbridge,’ she says. ‘We had to ensure the space remains multifunctional as city life can be

hectic - it was vital to create an oasis of calm. We also wanted to translate the old and new in order to follow the brief, but also add a contemporary feel. Finally, we loved being able to introduce natural materials into this glorious city project bringing colour, texture and warmth from the countryside,’ she explains. And it worked. The clients were delighted with the work, as well as the designers themselves. ‘With Sims Hilditch, you end up feeling like part of the family. We gave Emma a blank slate and she made it into a cosy home. There isn’t a spot we don’t love. None of our guests want to stay in hotels anymore. We constantly have visitors, but it makes us happy,’ they say.

hen René Dekker Design got the call from a family they had previously worked with for a similar apartment in London, it was because they needed a designer they could trust. Based in the Middle East, they wanted this new project to be their second London ‘trophy home’, and needed a company to handle the entire project. The apartment is located on the 15th floor of a high rise in Edgware Road, London, purchased off plan as three individual apartments and reimagined into one. The timescale for René Dekker was two years, working in harmony with the fit out. It was

an unusual project due to the amount of third party contractors involved. The main contractor oversaw the shell and core, a second contractor completed the remaining half, and René Dekker oversaw the installation of all soft furnishings and window treatment, carpets, linen and art and accessories. The apartment came with many challenges. Unconventionally shaped, it didn’t have traditional 90º corners. The brief included the requirement for five bedrooms, all with en suites, an open plan space to incorporate the living and dining rooms, and a study. Also included was a large spa bath,

Essentially, the clients were hoping for an ‘awardwinning apartment’, they said, and when the layout had been approved René Dekker set about creating a unique experience. The core principle would be to make use of interesting finishes in every room. Starting with the en suites, the combination of ‘out of the ordinary’ materials was planned so that the spaces would be visually exciting. In one, Calacatta was the main finish, accentuated by Silver Wave, while in another simple faceted porcelain tiles contrast with dark grey ‘leathered’ granite on the floor and the niche, as well as striking Strato Olympus marble on the shower walls. The children’s bathroom uses a combination of off white and pearl porcelain tiles, timber joinery and pearlised mosaic. In the main living space, integral to the scheme was the design for the stone floor in the principle reception area, which needed to make a statement.

The René Dekker team used angles to create a pattern running in parallel with the external walls. The stones used were Bleu de Savoie, Royal Brown and Statuario in equal measures, although these spread into other spaces. Next was the joinery. Wardrobes were designed for each bedroom to the specific needs of the client in terms of storage and finish. The kitchen was developed in the same manner and manufactured and installed by Boffi with the appliances supplied by Gaggenau. The entrance hall makes use of a soft gold polished plaster on the walls. Another highlight is a series of panels, some of which are doors to the hall’s coat cupboard, in a cracked gesso finish edged in bronze. Other key storage areas include the living room’s joinery, finished in the same special timber with horsehair panel doors specifically designed to ventilate the AV equipment

inside. In the dining area the team created a bookshelf and further storage in Macassar Ebony, accented by leather panels on the doors and Verdigris copper wall coverings behind the shelves. In the east-facing lounge, sycamore wall panels are edged with copper trim and a small display unit incorporating an electric fireplace. Further finishes include gilded cork wallpaper on open walls, faux silk wallpaper inside the display unit and directional polished plaster on the ceiling. The cinema room has a full height lacquered joinery piece again making use of horsehair panels on the doors and the walls are in a combination of faux silk and real suede panels, all in cobalt blue. Such luxurious finishes are abundant in all of the bedrooms too. There are pearlescent wall units, white faux silk wall panels, leather headboards, walk in wardrobes, gilded AV units and even a full height ‘hair on hide’ headboard. The guest WC combines lacquered and gilded

timber wall panels with metalized cork wall covering on a feature wall that also features on the ceiling. Further accents include a honey onyx basin and a Nero Porturo vanity top, as well as Belgian Black granite wall panels edged in bronze. Finally, for decorations and accessories, the client expressed a desire for statement pieces. Many were bespoke for the home, including the niche dresser, the dining table and the large ottoman behind the sofa. To complete the scheme, René Dekker added items from well-known brands which included small tables, lamps and some upholstered items, while the rugs were handmade to order in custom colours. The final choices for the art include a combination of pieces from the client’s own country as well as UK artists.

esigner Jo Hamilton knew exactly the type of person she wanted her work in a 1,155 sq.ft. three-bedroom apartment in Kensington to suit. ‘The end user I had in mind was a young, design-savvy professional couple who might have family to come over and stay, or might have children while they’re there,’ she explains. Jo was left to her own devices by her developer client when it came to a design scheme, and they were open to her decisions. ‘Young professional couple’ was really her only brief, which allowed her a great freedom. The only real constraint was the timing - Jo had a short lead-time of just one month to enable the developers to get the property back on the market, although this was extended

slightly. No mean feat, when you consider the work Jo and her team were faced with, working from scratch after a complete renovation. The kitchen was originally in the centre, with little or no natural light, and it was also a very small space. Jo needed to make sure that she kept it bright and fresh, and it was important to maximise the space. To achieve this, the coolness of the white units and of the grey in the marble kept it very open. The simple, clean design was intended, with lighter colours and cool tones visually receding. ‘The clean lines and shapes of the kitchen kept it simple, while the warm tone of the brass tap added a dash of sculptural interest and excitement, and brings a freshness that makes it really come alive,’ Jo says.

Elsewhere, Jo employed many fabrics and textures to achieve a softness and elegance, putting in layers of velvets and linens with warm tones from natural materials. ‘We also added in warmer colours such as the pink blush which is very soft and muted. The metallics weren’t cold colours either - brass and bronze are yellow-based, which again adds warmth,’ Jo adds. Lamps were all chosen for their sculptural value, albeit from a variety of designers, as Jo recalls. ‘I really loved the contrast in the modern sculptural shape of the central pendant in the drawing room against the apartment’s beautiful architectural features - I think it works really well. It’s bold and exciting and unexpected, and it really works.’ Almost all the furniture in the apartment -

including the armchairs, coffee table and sofa in the drawing room - was custom made, adding further pressure. ‘It added a lot of time to the production, but it was well worth it and I’m really pleased with the end result,’ Jo says. Jo says her favourite part of the entire apartment is the drawing room. ‘The huge windows allow the natural light to pour in. The architectural features, such as the high ceiling for instance, made the room an absolute pleasure to work on and it was important to let those features stand out and to not overtake them,’ she concludes.

designed bespoke headboards and beds in order to achieve that ‘wow’ factor as you enter each bedroom, but also so that each room was as exciting as the next. We picked some ‘off the shelf ’ pieces that we loved and then upholstered these in bright and luxurious colours and textures, using high quality plush velvets and textured silks in emerald greens, sapphire blues with some punchy Hermes patterns to add the luxury and the vibrance.’ Being synchronised with the Frieze Art Fair, the artworks planned for the new apartments were obviously vital. The designers had feature dark green wallpaper on the staircase wall which needed strong and dramatic artwork, so the choices were key to capture the eclectic feel of the apartments. Metal wall sculptures were mixed with abstract paintings along with some photography pieces, so there was variety and interest throughout the spaces. The team at Taylor Howes say their favourite aspect of the entire project was not an item found in the

homes, but unusually the actual brief from the client itself. ‘It’s always fun and exciting to work with colour and look for new creative ways to inject a property with life. It was refreshing to be able to embrace colour, texture and tone without feeling scared of the bold and the bright, or of mixing fabulous patterns,’ they say. With the accessorising and artwork it was inspiring for the team to have the freedom to be more daring, it seems. They add that it encouraged them to strive to find more eclectic pieces. The client was exceptionally pleased with the end results. Each of the three apartments Taylor Howes designed needed to have its own look, and that element of the work was really well executed and received, the designers say. In addition, the launch had positive feedback, and the fact that all of the properties sold successfully speaks volumes.

NOTTING HILL STUDIO Michael Reeves was asked to create an open-plan studio home with an ‘easy flow’
H
idden away in the desirable Portobello Road in Notting Hill, London, a studio home has been reimagined by designer Michael Reeves. With its own garden, the home benefits from wider windows, relocated kitchen, more bedrooms and bigger bathrooms. Floors were refinished and skylights were expanded. The plan was to make the house as open as possible, with a gallery on the upper sitting room floor overlooking the main living area below, and an easy ‘flow’ to the open kitchen, dining area and hallway. Repainting the wood-clad domed top-floor ceiling in pale taupe and removing some orange doors made the most difference, allowing a wealth of light in.
The slab of wall disguising the staircase is covered in a patchwork of mirrors which mask cupboards. Storage was an issue due to a desire for open plan living and for minimal amounts of furniture to be in the main living rooms. Therefore, walls of closets open to reveal offices, laundry and dressing areas and even suitcase storage. Michael’s favourite part is the effect of bringing the garden into the house, with landscaping by the client’s sister.

A PRODUCT OF LONDON This Belgravia home sets a benchmark for the sustainable retrofit of listed buildings
T
he daunting challenge to create a fully eco friendly home in a building that’s already listed, located in a conservation area of central London, was never going to be easy. But th2designs attempted exactly that recently when they were asked by Grosvenor Estates to furnish this conversion. The house which was divided into three apartments became the first listed building in the entire country to achieve BREEAM’s (Building Research Established Environmental Assessment Method) outstanding certification for sustainable design. One aspect of the project which aided its eco friendly status was the local sourcing that was employed when scouring for craftsmen and pieces to furnish the apartments. th2designs have managed to come up with
a beautiful and considered interior, ensuring everything used in the home was ethically sourced and sustainable. Beautiful upholstery in a wool which was woven by Scottish Mills, and curtains and blinds made with natural fabrics, have been used throughout the space. Even the artworks were created in the UK, and framed nearby in London. th2designs believes that the apartment sets a benchmark for the sustainable retrofit of listed buildings in the UK, while at the same time preserving the historic significance of the urban fabric of the building.

HARRINGTON GARDENS Brief: to curate and dress a modern, contemporary flat using Casa Botelho furniture
A
luxury duplex in Chelsea has been unveiled, the second collaboration between property developers East Eight and furniture and interiors house, Casa Botelho. It took a year for the bespoke collaboration to bear fruit, with the fully revamped home on the market for £5.25 million. Across three floors, the flat features an open-plan kitchen/diner and living space, three bathrooms and three bedrooms, with one an en-suite loft. The home benefits from large windows and striking marble throughout, and in the master and guest bedrooms moody blues and blush accents create an intriguing palette. A central focal point is the wooden staircase, which has been lavishly designed. In fact, every space East Eight created was embellished by the Casa Botelho
team. ‘We had fun playing with colour, proportions, finishes and adding our sense of masculine glamour to this magical building,’ says founder, João Botelho. Featured designs include the Bacco Armchair in Ottone Velvet, Cupid Corner Chair in Emerald Luxe Velvet, Ermes Pouf in Mustard Cowhide and Rio Fabric, Gibson and Kangaroo Martini Tables, Lorraine Rug and Diana coffee table. There were many other incredibly talented firms involved, including Thomas Zanon-Larcher Photography, Moon Ray Studio, Droo Projects and LC Developments.

DOUBLE THE GRANDEUR TG-Studio was briefed to combine two floors of a South Kensington mansion block
P
olo player, Rhys Cole jumped at the opportunity to buy a South Kensington apartment above his when it went on the market, and planned to combine the two to double his living space. Rhys and his girlfriend loved the area, having lived there for a while, but they needed more space. They recruited TG-Studio to manage the redesign. Aside from the planning permissions required, Rhys knew he needed a clever design to introduce a staircase between the units and create the grandeur this much bigger unit deserved. The lower and upper ground floor apartments both consisted of living rooms, dining rooms and kitchens with two bedrooms joining a bathroom. TG-Studio presented a design that created entertainment and living floors connected through a private staircase.
This leads to an upper hall and an almost entirely open plan entertaining area. The fireplace is the central feature and consists of a base of beige limestone. Above this are storage units clad with wood obtained from an old barn in Transylvania. The coffered ceiling shows off the high ceilings and connects the interior to the age of the building. The study is connected by a set of mirrored sliding doors. The master bedroom was previously Rhys’ living room, and the suite stretches from the building’s front to the rear courtyard. Here, perhaps more than anywhere else, the sense of space and the doubling in size is most obvious.

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY This home next door to St James’s Palace had to be nothing short of extraordinary
S
t James’ Palace is one of London’s most elegant buildings, so when Joanna Wood was asked to design a residence next door, the team knew they must create something to match. The client requested the home’s finishes, furniture and fittings came from suppliers in England. So the team used the finest quality materials, employing some of England’s most talented craftsmen. Bespoke, handmade joinery was commissioned in custom grey lacquer and veneers, with subtle differences in different areas. Hallways and staircases are honed limestone, complemented by bespoke bronze and glass balustrades with hand blown chandeliers across four storeys. True to the brief, the interiors employ the finest
British craftsmen, including bespoke pieces from David Linley, Tom Faulkner, Tom Dixon, Michael Reeves, Chesneys, Phillips & Wood, Arundell Carpets and Fiona MacDonald, with Samuel Heath custom ironmongery. To complete the look, iconic works like Lindsay Adelman’s Branching chandelier, Walter Knoll’s Bucket desk chair and Poltrona Frau’s Ginger dining chairs also feature, ensuring the high calibre of the furniture and exclusivity of the interiors, matching the home’s elegant neighbour.

W
hen he was a teenager, James Perkins went to visit restorer Mike Aston, who was working on a plaster cast. Something about the medium captured James’ imagination, leading to a life collecting pieces in the same field. Starting as a hobby, he went on to source pieces from Victorian institutions that had started to let them out of their collections. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York offered hundreds for sale, and he bought most of them. He also snapped up works from the Victoria & Albert museum in London. In total, today, James has around 4,500 pieces,

which he is keen for other people to see and enjoy. The collection includes everything from animals to philosophers to decorative cornices from the House of Lords. Most are classical, with many pieces coming from an era before the camera was invented. Often, casts were created to demonstrate far-flung wonders of the world to those who couldn’t travel themselves. Some were huge - James, just like the V&A, has works that were cast from Trajan’s Column in Rome. Others are tiny, to illustrate the decorative carving on a Corinthian frieze for example. James, was 19th Century architect Sir John Soane. His collection is still on display in his London home, but a house he helped redesign for MP William Cartwright, in Aynhoe, near Banbury in Oxfordshire, is now home to James’ collection, in a neat nod to history. Soane had raised the height of the building’s wings on the garden side at Aynhoe, creating a library at the west end and an orangery at the east. He also linked the stable and kitchen pavilions to the house with flamboyant miniature triumphal arches. It all makes for the perfect setting for James’ casts and they spectacularly fill the house. Adding drama to the amassed works are also pieces of art and taxidermy. The dining room has a jumping jaguar and a crowned lion, and James even plans to install a motor in the latter to scare guests. In the orangery Joan of Arc sits atop a horse - or rather, her legs do. These share the room with the head from Michelangelo’s David, fine caryatids and

a asset of Verner Panton chairs, among much more. The library itself contains a bit of everything, from a sheep from the Gobi desert, to Cellini’s Perseus, a harp, a lamp and stuffed parakeets. Pieces from the collection are also available to take home. James’s mentor, Mike Aston, is making new casts of some of James’s favourite pieces. A connection with designer Sophie Conran has also led to an arrangement with The Conran Shop, which will exhibit and sell a selection of nine new casts taken from the originals. And, true to James’ desire to share his fabulous collection, Aynhoe House is now open for bookings for special events, including weddings and parties, with the 28-bedroom home perhaps the ideal place to create your own stories, while musing over the artworks and plaster casts within it.
