Steeped in tradition, black marble has had its place in the manufacture of fireplaces since the 17th Century. JAMB offers all of its fireplace designs in its own black marble, so whatever the nature of the project, JAMB have something to fit the requirements. The masculine, clean nature of the material makes it relevant in both historical and traditional interiors.

INA CAMPBELL

Being an avid card player and a fan of ‘suits’ symbols, Nina Campbell came across a set of antique chairs and fell in love with the design. The Strachur Chairs were scaled up to be more comfortable than the antiques and designed so they could fold up which is always useful for city living. Equally, the chairs would be perfect for a ‘games’ corner in a drawing room.

COUNTING YAKS

W

hen it comes to beds, few will be more sought after than the new limited edition range produced by Savoir Beds in collaboration with yarn specialist Tengri. Produced in a run of just 50, these luxury beds are made with fibres from the yaks that dwell in the Khangai region of Mongolia. The Savoir No. 1 Khangai bed is described as far exceeding the comfort levels of the No. 2 version, which has originally created for The Savoy hotel in 1905. It contains eight kilos of yak fibres, hand combed from 80 indigenous semi wild yaks. It’s a fibre that is as soft as cashmere, warmer than merino wool and naturally odour and water resistant. Perfect for beds! £500 from the sale of each bed will also be donated to the Wildlife Conservation Society, to aid its work in that part of the world. Alistair Hughes, managing director of Savoir Beds pictured above, said: ‘We constantly strive to offer our customers the most exclusive and luxurious beds - this often means looking closely at the provenance of the carefully selected materials we use. With this in mind, we’re hugely excited about working with Tengri.’

FLIGHT OF FANCY

R

enowned for their stunning bespoke staircases, Bisca has recently completed a stunning staircase for an apartment complex in central London. The classical staircase sweeps majestically up from the lobby, through a half moon landing to the mezzanine level and beyond. The beautiful balustrade is hand cast in bronze, giving a tactile and timeless finish, and capped with a rich gleaming timber handrail perfectly matching the cladding of the walls in the lobby and common areas of this apartment complex in a London restoration project. The cool marbled stone steps are inlaid with bronze. Bisca’s design honours the timber clad curves of the lobby area and the staircase seamlessly becomes an extension to the original stone clad flight through the upper levels. Materials used pay homage to the traditional style of the building. www.bisca.co.uk

BUTTONS

GALORE

U

pholstery has evolved. But some of the original techniques of the craft have endured, and the Footstool Workshop is keeping many of them alive. Since the end of the 19th Century, the method of buttoning in furniture’s upholstery was in its infancy, having been first introduced by the Victorians. Originally a method of keeping dense filings in place, this method has since blossomed into a trademark of classic detailing. The Footstool Workshop explains that today, deep buttoning is the most popular choice for its customers. This approach allows for a sculptural feel to be achieved in the footstools it makes, creating more intense light and shade, as well as providing depth and dimension. Whether the material is velvet or leather, the resulting products are stunning.

TEAK A LOOK AT THE GO-TO WOOD

W

ENDY CUSHING

The Helix Murano Tiebacks from Wendy Cushing Designs are just one design from the new collections of Contemporary Braids and Embroidered tapes available at the Jason D’Souza showroom in Chelsea Harbour Design Centre. Available in a range of colourways, the Helix Murano Tiebacks are made of hand-blown glass and would add a delicate and elegant touch to curtains or drapes.

T

eak is fast becoming the go-to wood in modern furniture, and designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby have just collaborated with German producers Dedon to craft the Tibbo collection in exactly that material. In fact, Dedon has never produced furniture in teak before, and Tibbo represents the designers’ first ever collaboration with Barber and Osgerby. The range is hand crafted from slow-growth premium teak grown in sustainable plantations. The chairs, benches, tables and loungers can even be sited outside, where they will weather beautifully to a silvery colour, says Dedon. ‘The collection brings the sensibility of indoor furniture outdoors,’ the designers explain. ‘It’s tactile and architecturally calm, which contrasts with the chaotic nature of the outdoors,’ they add. The simplicity of Tibbo’s design is balanced by the warmth of the wood, its cushions, and the soft touch and natural look of the fibre, which was developed especially for this new collection.

BUSINESS OR PLEASURE?

M

ariner London has recently completed this project for one of their long-standing clients. Situated in the heart of London, the brief was to create an open-plan contemporary space that could be used whilst the client was on business. Clean, strong lines have been used throughout the property and the deep polished walnut finishes boldly contrast against the subtle base colours. Blonde inlays and luxurious velvets have been used to bring depth and softness to the furnishings. Classical flourishes in the accessories and lighting ensure that an air of opulence is maintained. Abstract artwork is juxtaposed against the simple wall coverings, fine silk curtains and plush velvets. The perfection of the finishes and materials used are a compliment to the beautiful architecture of the building itself. www.mariner.london

design project

ORCHESTRATED SYMPHONY Originality was a buzzword in the brief for this Moscow apartment

T

he Oleg Klodt Architecture and Design Studio has recently completed work on a commission to redesign an apartment in Moscow’s Gold Keys area. The brief was to develop something modern, comfortable and neo-classical that also included contemporary touches. The resulting interior provides a mood of whimsy with its juxtaposition of styles and design touches. Unique features give each living area a character of its own, providing a ‘carefully orchestrated symphony’, that reflects the client’s personality. Highlights include a specially-rusted extractor hood above the kitchen’s bold blue granite, a deep petrol blue sofa

accentuated with orange cushions, Russian abstract paintings hanging above an asymmetrical leather-covered sideboard, as well as angular ceiling lights throughout. Structurally too, the apartment is overflowing with character. There are bright colours and contemporary shapes in giant stucco, level concrete floors with marble faced walls, herringbone patterned floors laid with French, honey-coloured timbers, and a range of colourful concrete tiles that hark back to Spanish streets. In addition, designed especially for the project, timber mouldings such as classical trims, paneled walls and stepped cornices bring a polished harmony.

ABOVE: The colourful living room features lustrous curtains from Pepe Penalver, a stunning chandelier from Arteriors, sumptuous armchairs from Amy Somerville, a coffee table from Ochre and artworks from Russian painter Olga Shagina Bridge for Design London 2017

THE DECORATED HOME: LIVING WITH STYLE AND JOY AUTHOR MEG BRAFF | PUBLISHER RIZZOLI NEW YORK

E

veryone wants a house filled with grace and charm. Classic yet cheerful, Meg Braff’s style has a formality that is never studied and an elegance that is approachable and pretty. In seven chapters that cover the basics of her look, Braff shares advice on creating rooms that are both livable and attractive, maintaining both form and function. In the first two chapters, she explores the key elements of her look - colour and pattern - and how to employ them for maximum impact. She discusses the essential elements of stylish bedrooms (hint: bring back the dressing table!), explores the fundamentals of inviting baths and breakfast rooms, and gives tips on making chic outdoor spaces. Finally, Braff explains the importance of finishing touches, the little extras that elevate a room’s decor from good to great. All of her advice comes together in an overall theme of gracious living that will be warmly welcomed by readers looking to impart polish, colour, and grace to their home. Lushly illustrated with vivid images of Braff’s lively work, The Decorated Home: Living with Style and Joy is an inspiring, idea-filled resource for both novices and experts alike. ADVENTURES IN PATTERN Good pattern is one that people can connect with - one with familiarity

P

attern is innate in us - we have been at it since the beginning of mankind. Symbols and patterns were so important to primitive tribes; they formed the basis of their languages and consequently, our visual and verbal language today. As early as 40,000 years ago, zig zag lines were etched on Ice Age mammoth teeth, the stripe appeared in prehistoric times and was bent at right angles to produce a zig zag, perhaps to represent the hostile-looking mountain range. In the cave paintings at Lascaux, animals were depicted and Oriental carpet often showed the stylised gardens in the oasis that the desert tribes hoped to find. In the early eighth Century, chrysanthemums signified long life; the swastika signified light, and perhaps was a stylised version of a four petaled flower, blooming when the weather was fruitful. Andean tribes wove dots and lines and suns into feather pieces; 16th Century Ottoman craftsmen wove them into beautiful brocades - their patterns were as sophisticated and as beautiful and modern looking as anything today. 17th Century Mughal painters and craftsman carved with exquisitely sensitive depictions of desert flowers into marble, neelam stone and pietra dura work. Then there are the William Morris designs or those 17th Century silks by Maria Garthwaite and James Leman. And on it goes - so you could argue that the groundwork has been done for us modern pattern makers. I have come to understand that a good pattern is one that people can connect with - it must have a sense of familiarity about it, but at the same time the design must surprise them with its freshness. We are all becoming more confident with pattern. In interiors, geometrics are very much on trend. I am seeing geometric patterns influenced by the dynamic abstractions of

66

Bridge for Design London 2017

the Russian avant-garde and the Russian Art exhibition at The Royal Academy of Arts will no doubt inspire bold innovative design. The Turnell and Gigon design Rocket is an embroidery of flying geometric motifs mixed up with Ottoman crescent roundels motifs. Rocket is embroidered on a rough farmer’s sackcloth, using glinting metal thread and raffia, making Rocket a ‘noble’ embellishment of a poor man’s cloth. The Japanese were very good at this in the 16th Century with their kimono fabrics, taking the simple knot and dye and the running thread technique and incorporating metal thread creating wonderful hand painted depictions of nature. Flowers and botanicals are timeless but the fashion is to give the classics a fresh spin. Nature arranges shapes so well, whether it’s the petal formation of a flower, or the lines on a shell - I find it quite astonishing that any of us pattern makers feel the need to do any re-arranging of our own. In the past, decorative patterns were hand drawn, hand painted, hand carved, hand woven - all with skills that demanded patience, a lot of practice, real thought and close live examination of nature. Today images of plants or geometry can be scanned, downloaded and with a click on the key board, manipulated to produce a pattern so easily. I worry that this has produced a slap dash trigger pulling attitude which can lead to soulless results. I feel lucky as I have the best of two worlds - the experience of pre-digital age Art school with lots of drawing, painting and experimenting with print techniques without the distraction of computers combined with, the current digital age speed which enables me to work on several projects at once. It will be interesting to explore the interest in hand drawn pattern in a digital age. This may well be a trend in itself.

TRUE WALLS OF ART The use of tiles enables you to express a whole new level of creativity

C

eramic tiles are one of the oldest and most generally employed forms of architectural decoration. All over Britain in the 19th Century, factories were popping up everywhere to bring colour and shine to exteriors and interiors alike. It was a sign of affordable splendour and many buildings were not complete without these adornments. We can still see fine examples of lustrous glazed tiles, by Stoke-On-Trent’s H.E Smith and Johnstons, in London’s underground stations and exteriors of public houses where discerning builders appreciated their value. But, soon the fashion for tiles faded. When concrete came into play, the demand for tiles ebbed and people began to be collectors of tiles rather than use them within interior design. Until now. Over the past five years, a comeback is evident and revival sees a thirst for colour and pattern to create ‘art’ within interiors. Tiles enable you to express a whole new level of creativity. We are rising from a minimalist time when people have played it safe and I think the trend is to be more willing to push boundaries with colour and experiment. We have always been asked about ‘calming colours’ with tiles, especially for bathrooms but the appetite for colour as

68

Bridge for Design London 2017

well as fine glaze treatments has returned. Visual richness of tiles inspired and produced in the Mediterranean allow the bolder tones and designs to integrate into our homes. It also brings with it an influence of a lifestyle, which many adore, which is why the trend for strong motifs, geometric pattern and Moroccan inspired designs are popular. It is about having fun rather then being a little too serious. Using organic materials such as wood, slate, marble and concrete, is one of the trends we note for tiles this year. You can create an amazing statement with metallic mosaic wall tiles and I think we are going to see more demand for mosaics in classic and modern spaces. Also, at present there is a strong call for hand-painted emblems and intricate floral patterns that are Japanese inspired - tiles featuring birds, butterflies and embossed with motifs in gold or platinum are very much ‘on-trend’. The rise of the wet-room, colourful splash backs, pretty fire surrounds and the importance of kitchens with ‘focal points’ makes the demand for tiles continuous. Designers continue to add truly beautiful ideas and colourful, artful installations with the use of tiles for both practical, beautiful and lasting results.

FRESH LOOK

AT FLOCK F

lock wallpaper, invented in the 17th Century and has been resolutely popular ever since, is now a historically important artifact which one designer is undertaking to archive. The team at Allyson McDermott have now amassed an impressive collection of designs which can be produced to order, in modern colours to provide a startling freshness. Allyson’s expertise comes from years of hands on trial and error. All of the details in a design are taken into account, be it texturing gold leaf paper, using a Victorian mangle, or the quest to achieve the perfect length of flock using a rotary lawnmower and bicycle! Recent discoveries in the restoration of historic buildings have caused a resurgence in the interest in flock wallpapers, and Allyson’s processes for creating it today are lengthy, involving layering, glazing, hand printing and hand trimming and more.

EITZNER

Inspired by Weitzner’s textile Glaze, the Antiquity wallcovering calls to mind the patinaed surfaces of ancient artworks. To create this nuanced 100% Clean Vinyl, a soft metallic mottling is layered with a pearlised cloud-like pattern, then embossed with a subtle texture. Available in five different colour ways, the Anquity wallcovering is sold in Altfield’s London Chelsea Harbour showroom and is sure to add a touch of femininity and grandeur to any interior scheme. www.weitznerlimited.com

GAULTIER 2

017 sees an important turning point in the history of Lelievre fabrics, in the form of a new wallpaper collaboration that comes under the name of the ‘Jean Paul Gaultier Collection.’ In fact, everyone’s favourite sailor-obsessed Parisien designer has been collaborating with the Lelievre brand since 2012, but has up to this point created four collections solely of fabrics and accessories. It was not until this year though that his talent combined with Lelievre’s craftsmanship for a range of striking and unmistakably Gaultier wallpapers. The collection shows some of the fashion icon’s most recognisable designs, as well as a few you might not expect, and the wallpapers have been produced by European manufacturers using the latest in printing technology. In total, there are 15 designs across 42 colours, ranging from the vividly geometric and the brutally industrial, to delicate floral patterns and images of birds in flight. www.lelievre.eu

ANUEL CANOVAS

This new Manuel Canovas collection hails from the heart of the Mediterranean with Greek island stopovers amidst lapping waves for an outdoor collection; strolls through oriental gardens seeking out the beauty of the plant world, beauty that is heightened in supreme printed or embroidered fabrics; ornamental motifs discovered on palace visits for resolutely geometric embroideries and weaves; an excursion along the Silk Road to Istanbul for an elegant, rare and refined collection of stripes and effervescent taffetas.

LUXURY FAMILY

LIFESTYLE

Taking advantage of the Knightsbridge location, this is the ultimate family home Luigi Esposito and Stefania Mazzarani Interior Designers, Oro Bianco Interior Design T: +44 (0) 207 591 1920 www.orobiancointeriordesign.com

ro Bianco’s team of RIBA architects and interior designers were recently commissioned by developer Fenton Whelan to create a luxurious home for what it called ‘the contemporary nuclear family.’ With London now the established destination for families looking for a cosmopolitan centre to settle in, the brief for the team was to design ‘the ultimate family home,’ - one which would take advantage of the property’s location with a luxury that would suit its exclusive surroundings. The potential was certainly always inherent in the property, including a master suite, four bedrooms, reception rooms, swimming pool, gym and sauna.

Everything in the home is centred around a luxurious family lifestyle. There is a large open plan living space with lavish soft furnishings and bespoke joinery, but to maximise family time together, it was designed to open out into the main kitchen and its central island unit. Interaction was actually the guiding principle, with a desire for a natural flow of movement. Further enhancing that quality family time is a spacious cinema room, accessible by stairs, which 94

Bridge for Design London 2017

spans the lower level of the house beneath the car port. Luxury continues in the bathroom areas and powder room, where marble is a key element, and the corridors are lined with stunning Rosewood framing to match the property’s joinery. Other deluxe touches include the huge mirrored wall in the dining room, the eglomise glass, and a limestone lined fifteen-metre swimming pool - something that’s definitely rare in urban Knightsbridge.

CATHY

S

culptor Cathy Azria of BD Design first made her name in the industry with her fire installations. But now, she has taken that concept to an entirely new destination. In fact, it’s these same fire pieces that feature - only now they’re outdoors. They can now create a stunning focal point for any deck, terrace or garden. Cathy has worked for private clients, architects and designers, creating highly sculptural works and designs for homes and gardens alike. Her influences are wide ranging, she says, incorporating natural materials, organic forms, the interplay of light and a strong belief that just because something is functional does not mean it can’t be beautiful too. Since the first concept of these pieces, fire has always been a keen interest of hers.

TIM GOSLING COLLECTION

R

enowned rug producers, The Rug Company, have welcomed another name to its roster of collaborators this month, in the form of British designer Tim Gosling. Drawing influence from the Art Deco era, with its geometric lines and patterns featuring in each, the two new hand-knotted Tibetan wool and silk rugs Tim has designed were woven entirely by hand using ancient techniques in the company’s weaving houses in Kathmandu, Nepal. Named Empire and Deco Border, both rugs take design cues from the 1930s, with Italian architecture key to the former, and paneled walls of the era evident in the latter. Gosling explains the use of colours in the Deco Border rug: ‘I particularly wanted to get a silk bronze into this rug to work with interior colours that we’re now using and that have become so popular again.’

ST JAMES PARK 1508 London created a modern interior that ties in with the history of Mayfair Louise Wicksteed, 1508 London Lead Designer T: +44 (0) 207 802 3800 www.1508london.com

T

his stunning London property is nestled between the beautiful St James Park and historic Mayfair. Built in the 1980s, the apartment occupies the sixth and seventh floors of a contemporary building, designed by the renowned architect James Stirling.1508 London were commissioned to create a modern interior that would tie in with the history of Mayfair but also incorporates the client’s eclectic collection of modern 20th Century art. Sourced from Porta Romana, Stuart Scott and Bolier, the furniture and furnishings were inspired by 1930s design with clean, fluid lines, luxurious lacquers and parchment details. In the living room, a set of ten limited edition prints depicting a famous painting called ‘La Fee Electicitie’ by Raoul Duffy hangs along one wall. Painted in the 1930s, it explored the relationship between man and machine which inspired the design scheme. 1508 were keen to create an interesting link between the floors. ‘We developed a bronze and glass staircase design in order to allow the light to flood into what had previously been a very dark space. The walls around the staircase were mirrored creating a stark, very sculptural staircase that works well with the clean feeling of the rest of the design,’ says Louise Wicksteed, lead designer. The traditional, historic location contrasts wonderfully with the use of gold and contemporary modern finishes.

LES OBJETS D’ART A home brought to life by richness of texture, colour and objets d’art Charlotte Robb & Alix Lawson, Lawson Robb Founders T: +44 (0) 207 351 9383 www.lawsonrobb.com

B

ehind exceptional architecture lies one of Mayfair’s finest three bedroom residences. This is a home brought to life through a richness of texture, subtle colour and intriguing objets d’art. The artwork plays a particularly important role. Rather than purely decorative or positioned to create focal points, the artwork, sourced by House of Fine Art, gives a life to the apartment. The movement of the artwork is created through an inherent transparency. For example, the wall piece by Zhuang Hong Yi manipulates flowers made of rice paper with layers of acrylic and watercolour paint2 to create a canvas of large-scale yet very delicate petals. Aggelika Korovessi’s cast bronze statue of swirling birds takes ancient Greece as her foundation. Light interplays with the metal’s reflective quality while shining through the individual birds. Meanwhile her cast bronze and stainless steel tight-rope walker adds a vertiginous excitement, a standing sculpture animating the room and adding an unexpected dynamism. Meanwhile, Marie Soliman’s collection of paintings explores the cultural space between her Egyptian birthplace and the contemporary vibrancy of the London she calls home. The exoticism and rich textures of Egypt are called upon a contrast with the modern pace of London. Hanging neatly next to the birds of flight, together they tell a story of travel and adventure. 110 Bridge for Design London 2017

REMOTE DESIGN

Bringing this Savannah home back to its original state but with added modernity Rena Barclay, Rena Barclay Interiors Founder and Designer T: +44 (0) 186 534 3853 www.renabarclayinteriors.co.uk

R

ena Barclay received a phone call from her close friend, Deane Donnigan, asking for help with the restoration and interior design of a Federal Period house in Savannah’s Downtown Historic District. The house was very dated - it was tired and needed a great deal of attention. The brief was to bring the house back to its original state but with added modern, state of the art, conveniences. With the house located 4000 miles from England, it created the hurdle of commuting overseas for site meetings. However, Deane was living in England, so Rena was able to discuss fabrics, finishes and furniture in person. They shopped in London and in the English countryside and amassed a collection of furniture to ship over to Georgia. Rena loves antiques and all things modern, so her style can be described as both transitional and eclectic. ‘I like to mix elements up from all eras, as though these things have been handed down from one generation to the next,’ says Rena. When looking at the end result, this house is a combination of styles: English, American, Traditional, Contemporary and Southern. ‘It is a reflection of the influences absorbed by Deane over the years due to living in various parts of the world. That, to me, is a great accomplishment and should be true with all projects.’

CHARLES STREET Brief: To maximise the internal views of a stunning Mayfair apartment Paul Jones, Rigby & Rigby Lead Designer and Architect T: +44 (0) 203 418 0446 www.rigbyandrigby.com

T

he brief for this 3,015 sq ft Mayfair apartment was to provide an elegant yet functional home that made the most of the original footprint but also to maximise the internal views between the key living areas. It was decided that the original apartment lacked clarity and circulation between these areas, so Rigby & Rigby were tasked with something of a reconfiguration. The frontage to the building was also something that needed to be celebrated, and opened up the opportunity to maximise levels of natural light within the dining, living and kitchen area, as well as create spectacular framed views along Charles Street. Rigby & Rigby considered the chance to procure, design and develop one of Mayfair’s most prestigious apartments as the key aspect of the project. They also singled out the master suite’s 18-metre vistas as a highly successful elements of the apartment, as well as the new spatial configuration throughout. The collaboration between rooms was key to the Charles Street apartment’s success. The views, entertainment space and flow through the rooms, the grand entrance as a focus and the new divisions elsewhere all mean the highly prized space retain its splendour.

he main request that Studio Duggan received from the client was to fuse a number of different design incluences into the conversion of their five-bed mock Tudor home in Hertfordshire. Everything from Gothic to Art Deco and Tuscan and English countrysides were singled out, and in the kitchen - more so than perhaps any other room in the newly refurbished house - that mission was comfortably achieved. The room was extended as part of the renovation, and with its Farrow & Ball Studio Green hue, hammered copper prep sink and twin oriental pagoda style metal lanterns hanging above the bar, each of the family’s main influences seems to have been worked into the finished product beautifully. In addition, a leaded glass patio door leads out to the garden, and ties the room wonderfully, practically bringing the outside in.

AUGHAN

A new addition to the table lamp collection from Vaughan is the stunning crackled Hartford glazed ceramic table lamp in white. This lamp was inspired by an antique bronze vase which was re-modelled in a ceramic finish to achieve a lighter, more contemporary design perfect for understated elegant interior schemes.

ith a career that began as the creator of stage and lighting displays for an events company, it is no surprise that Ben Rousseau’s designs have a theatrical bent. ‘I’m a big fan of lighting textured surfaces,’ he says. ‘An interior brick wall or timber beam can look great with a simple wash of light upwards from the floor or downwards from near the ceiling.’ The designer uses warm and cool temperatures of lighting, dimmers and directional functions to create different zones or to highlight textured surfaces or specific furnishings at the touch of a button or even a hand clap. ‘Nothing is more atmospheric than lighting,’ says Rousseau. ‘It gives you the ability to be flexible with moods and to define a space for multiple uses.’ Rousseau’s latest creation, Tempus is an eye-catching kinetic artwork that doubles as an illuminated time piece. Inspired by his love of sci-fi movies and automotive design; instead of rotating hands, a futuristic clock face operates with state-of-the-art digital LEDs that illuminate three different segments: seconds, minutes and hours to show the time. ‘Time is so precious, I wanted to celebrate its importance in a beautiful way,’ says Rousseau.

ADDING LIGHT IN

THE BATHROOM T

he perfect lighting in the bathroom has an effect on the way we feel. It is where we start the morning and where we go to in the evening before going to rest. The emission of light and the light atmosphere decisively contribute to well-being. Lighting expert Roland Greule explains how to correctly set lighting with examples from Duravit.

1

Basic Illumination and Zonal Lighting

1. The basic illumination plays a central role - it serves for orientation in the bathroom and stages the furnishings. Zonal light effects create atmosphere, and direct and focus the eye. Zonal light sources should be very simple to be switched on. Such as the mirror element of the new series L-Cube by Christian Werner: The glare-free LED lighting is used on all four sides of the mirror. A sensor is used to dim and turn on or off this light frame by a simple movement of the hand.

2

Matching the Lighting to different Materials

Lighting Scenarios for Small Bathrooms

2. Cleverly used lights can correct the weaknesses of a room: ceiling spotlights make low ceilings seem higher, small bathrooms with zonal lighting can appear more spacious. The mirror light of the smaller version of the L-Cube mirror provides a bright as well as warm light with unprecedented 300 Lux - and so visually enlarges the bathroom.

3. Narrow-beam, direct light sources are recommended for hard and shiny materials such as ceramics. Also, choose cool light colours for cool materials as they emphasise such characteristics. A warm light colour with a low colour temperature is suitable for enhancing warm materials such as wood. Matt, diffusely reflecting surfaces should be illuminated with soft large-area lights from wall lamps or lampshades.

3

5 Mood Lighting

4

4. A mood light should be planned as a third light source in the bathroom. This lighting provides light and is itself an object of contemplation. Such as the mirror of the new series Cape Cod by Philippe Starck for Duravit: The broad, all-round LED light frames the mirror, accentuates the bathroom and can be dimmed via infrared sensors. The option to change the colour volume by dimming has a huge impact on our mood; a fresher colour temperature in the morning helps us wake up and a cooler light in the evening calms us down. 132 Bridge for Design London 2017

Light and Safety

5. Light provides safety in the dark in addition to the optical design of a room. But too bright lighting often is disturbing during a visit to the bathroom at night. Discreetly integrated light sensors and modern technologies show the way. For example, the SensoWash shower toilet with an integrated LED night light function provides the necessary orientation without interrupting the resting state of the body.

COLIN RADCLIFFE

London Designer takes his family’s Notting Hill townhouse down to the studs and creates a fresh take on bespoke glamour WORDS ANDREW FERREN | PHOTOGRAPHS SIMON UPTON

T

he work of British interior designer Colin Radcliffe has evolved gracefully across his career. For the first half, you could recognise his style from his smooth, even sexy trademarks, often being glossy, sleek and gracefully controlled. But as time has passed and the finances of clients he’s helped have risen, these qualities have been bolstered and built upon, with the homes he designs nowadays regularly featuring extremely high-end furnishings such as Maison Jansen furniture, Macassar ebony and even a touch of marble or mink found within them. Colin believes the luxury motifs inherent in his work can be traced back to his teenage love of beautiful furniture and antique objects. Today, dealers from the ever-popular Pimlico Road call him as soon as they spot standout Venetian light fixtures, with one even heading straight for the designer when they discovered a massive 1950s

marble table that they knew he would love. Colin boasts a client base in London numbering among it bankers and hedge-fund managers. Usually these clients will call upon his services even before they’ve bought a new house; this way feel they can be sure he will be in charge of every detail in their new homes. If the idea of bankers and hedge-fund managers conjures an idea of tasteless man caves and bachelor pads, think again. In fact, Colin’s work is loved because it caters so very well for 21st Century families, while still retaining the chic elegance his clients desire. Colin and his wife Angela, a New Zealand born model, along with their son Maximus, have perfected many homes - having lived in 10 apartments and houses over the past 20 years alone. Maximus has even been involved in the design work along the way, offering opinions on the room he’s called his own, such as playrooms and bedrooms.

136 Bridge for Design Autumn 2016

Over the years, the family have become skilled at working out a vision for their homes to be, and this came in handy when Colin first set eyes on a dilapidated 1760s Georgian building on Notting Hill’s Westbourne Grove, which he purchased in 2011. It was clear that this new home was to become one of Colin and his family’s biggest challenges yet, a major undertaking that would require the largest structural and stylistic transformations they’d ever known. It was, it’s fair to say, in a bad way. Over recent years it had suffered the tyrannies of being divided up for student dwellings and even squats. At one point, Angela went so far as to describe the property as filthy. However, Colin’s vision saved the property, and once all those rabbit warren-like divisions had been stripped out, with walls knocked through and a sense of space redeemed, his wife began to see the potential in the great old building. Something definitely worked, as after a year’s renovation work, the family have now been living at the home for over two years, which is something of a record for these once nomadic renovators. Virtually everything had to be rebuilt, LEFT: In the drawing room, a 1950s sofa by Ico Paristi, all covered by Bruno Triblet velvet, surround a cocktail table by Angelo Mangiarotti, the 18th Century gilt-wood mirror is Italian, and the 1970s magazine rack is by Maison Jansen: the prints above the fireplace are by Victor Pasmore, the palm sculpture is by C. A Hermes throw is draped over the back of the sofa

although thankfully Colin was able to retain the home’s original staircase and wooden sash windows. The 3,000 sq.ft. house has an abundance of natural light throughout, and also benefits from gardens at both the front and rear, which help to deflect the occasionally manic nature of the area it’s set in. If the world of Notting Hill does make its way into the home, it’s more than well catered for, with a marbled and mirrored dining room that can host 12 comfortably. Even with less formal occasions, the luxury levels remain high. There is gold leather upholstery in the breakfast nook, while for informal drinks guests can head to the drawing 138 Bridge for Design London 2017

room, where a curvy 1950s Ico Parisi sofa and chairs will welcome them with their sumptuous curves. These lines are made all the more tactile when contrasted with the sharp rectilinear geometry of the room’s Georgian moldings. Angela explains that her New Zealand upbringing has instilled a love for a style of living that’s as much at home indoors as out. Her new garden facilitates this perfectly, although she acknowledges it as a true luxury for central London - to be able to move a social gathering so easily from indoors to outdoors in your own home. So, could the latest in the Radcliffe’s long list of dwellings go on to provide something of a longer stop-off point than

they might have expected? Quite possibly. Colin says he and his family are thinking about the future a lot more nowadays, as while he is on the search for pieces to decorate a home, Angela considers the practicalities within it for Maximus and his friends. It’s become a matter of balance - surely the key factor in any successful family home. 140 Bridge for Design London 2017

RECOVERY Southside House, the ancestral home of Adam Munthe is steeped in four Centuries of history and tales

WORDS RUTH CORBETT & JAKE KENNEDY | PHOTOGRAPHS TIM BEDDOW

S

outhside House, the home of Adam Munthe, which nestles on the edge of Wimbledon Common, has been in his family for many generations. Just as Adam does, many of his ancestors revelled in the home’s history, and whether you believe the stories or not, some reveal fascinating details about the family home - including claims that Lord Nelson, Lady Hamilton and Lord Byron often visited. Built by Dutch architects in the 17th Century, Southside House eventually found its way into the possession of Adam’s father, Malcolm. Once he had obtained it, he took it upon himself to restore it to its former glory. Having returned from military service, he was skilled in the art of salvage, and this outlook, LEFT: The living room at Southside is home to many salvaged pieces of furniture, adding to those already in the Munthe family’s collection ABOVE: The frontage of Southside House was remodelled in the William and Mary style in the late 17th Century Bridge for Design London 2017 143

coupled with a desire to hark back to simpler times he remembered before he went to war, lead to a highly dramatic, almost theatrical finish to the home. Sadly, like so many of the country’s great ancestral pads, Southside House fell prey to fire damage in 2010. This lead to an almost complete destruction of the top floor, while the dreaded water damage wiped out the lower levels - and much more besides. And so, restoration work had to begin all over again, only this time with Adam as project manager. He believes that in some ways, the chance to start over was a good thing. He felt he could have a bit of a ‘tidy up’. As you enter the home, you first come to the main hallway, which was badly damaged by bombs during the war. Steps were taken in the aftermath of these attacks to restore some theatricality to the room, with fake pillars installed, Adam explains. There is also an astonishing trompe l’oeil ceiling here. ABOVE: The original great stone fireplace dominates the entrance hall, surrounded by later neo-classical additions to the house LEFT: The walls of the dining room hang heavy with old family portraits

RIGHT: A neo-classical archway topped with a broken pediment marks the approach to the rest of the house

Moving through the very grand entrance hall, you come to what’s termed the tapestry hall where, as you might expect, the walls are all hung with what appears to be original works of tapestry. However, all is not as it may seem, as the tapestries are in fact what’s known as Poor Man’s Tapestries, a painted canvas that covers the wall, and not woven works at all. A tiny, intriguing space known as the Periwig Powder Closet leads off from the tapestry room, which almost unbelievably was a space for visiting dignitaries to 146 Bridge for Design London 2017

place their heads to receive a little powder for their wigs - from a servant waiting just beyond! Another secret that betrays the many stylistic choices taken originally in this building lies in the breakfast room, which features an astonishing 17th Century Italian leather frieze. Adam explains that this was in fact a practical covering of the time, primarily because of the way leather would not absorb the odours from the foods eaten within. Reynolds self-portrait overlooks the beautifully ramshackle gardens beyond, and could quite possibly be the most famous room in the house. In more recent times, it has been the backdrop to a succession of high end fashion shoots, perhaps most notably for Vogue magazine. Yet it has a cinematic history as well, having been featured in scenes in The Invisible Woman, starring Ralph Fiennes. One of the wonderful things about Adam’s involvement with Southside House is the way in which he lets it be utilised like this, and he is never overly protective - it’s still very much a house that lives and breathes. Be it photographers, vast film crews or inquisitive magazine teams, all are welcome. Inspired by the somewhat strict upbringing in the home, where sitting on furniture was practically prohibited by his parents, these days Adam is keen for as many people as possible to experience Southside House. In Spring and Summer, you can visit yourself, as the grand home is open for tours for all. 148 Bridge for Design London 2017

DEPTH CHARGE London turned one of Steven Gambrel’s modern minded clients into one with appreciation for traditional luxury

WORDS MITCHELL OWENS & JAKE KENNEDY | PHOTOGRAPHS SIMON UPTON

T

he city of London can change a person, with the famous quote from Samuel Johnson saying when you’re tired of it, you’re tired of life. A client of interior designer Steven Gambrel took it to the next level, wanting to bring some of the city’s rejuvenating power back home to his latest New York apartment. The New York banker had spent five years working in the UK capital, but on his return to his home country he felt he needed a change from his loft apartment in the Tribeca region of New York. He explained to Steven that the experiences he’d had in the UK had left him feeling that his ‘old’ home in the US was no longer representative of his new, somewhat reinvigorated outlook on life. His time in London was spent in the grand white Victorian buildings of the Holland Park district, and this daily exposure to the more classical forms of architecture meant he wanted to move home on return to America. He decided to buy an apartment in a balconied building that dated from 1895, in an area of Manhattan that’s very similar to Victorian London - it even had a Gothic Revival church at its centre. Then, the client turned to Steven Gambrel, who he knew from work the designer had carried out for him at two previous homes over the years - including the Florida getaway he owns to this day.
The banker’s new outlook did not mean, he had to stress to Steven, he wanted his latest home to feel like one belonging to an older generation. Certainly he was in great admiration of the older styles he’d first witnessed in classical London, and it was only that rich, historical feel that he wanted to translate into his new Manhattan home, and not an old-fashioned, out of date one. RIGHT: Yellow taffeta curtains and a yellow sofa by Steven Gambrel add warmth and depth to the living room giving off a sophisticated and luxurious aura

150 Bridge for Design London 2017

ABOVE: A palette of grey, black and yellow on the walls and soft furnishings unite this chic living/dining room with the yellow adding a sunny splash of colour RIGHT: The library is strikingly decorated with black paneled walls and a yellow ceiling set off by black and yellow striped curtains making the best of the lack of light

The end result is one that’s definitely contemporary - a sumptuous one even - but also one with a depth of character and heritage that springs from contrasts and fine balances. There is a palpable slickness combined with lush textures and bold colours rubbing up against smooth finishes, and any historic references that do exist are neatly tempered with subtler cutting edge touches. The atmosphere throughout betrays a playful intelligence on the part of both the designer and the client. Natural light splashes are highlights in most rooms, while an extremely muted colour scheme of yellows, greys and browns brings a sense of calm coherence to the whole home. Steven has described the finished apartment as something akin to a clubhouse, and you definitely get the feeling when you see it that a card game could break out over whiskies at any point. Artworks are dotted around among more traditional settings - a Kate Moss Calvin Klein advert sits inside a Keith 152 Bridge for Design London 2017

Coventry sculpture - while a Gerhard Richter print is found alongside a Sigmar Polke painting. Other highlights include armchairs by designer Jacques Quinet, a cocktail table by Hungarian architect Paul LĂĄszlĂł, and lamps by James Mont, a designer who made chinoiserie popular in the 1940s. Having been built in 1895, the apartment was not without its structural challenges, for Steven considers himself every bit the modern designer. But he saw these instead as opportunities. A wall of cupboards was removed, opening up a grand entrance hall, and the lack of natural light in the rear rooms was actually celebrated via the darker brown tones. Colours were a key part of the decision process, and Steven explains he wanted to conjure strong moods from their use in each room. In the master bedroom, the greens found there are dark- a sexy colour, Steven believes. In the altogether sunnier living and dining room, which are south-facing, the tones were lighter, with grey walls and lemon yellow silk taffeta curtains.

The apartment’s original mahogany doors have been retained and refreshed, with their stiles, rails and raised panels painted shades of grey to emulate the iconic storefronts on the Right Bank in Paris, Steven says. Especially striking is the liberal use of fittings, old and new, that are bold, many with gold, brass and bronze tones. These include the ornate chandeliers, the sconces, one of the table lamps and the picture lights. Even the dressing room’s usually hidden shelves and storage cabinets are trimmed with audaciously large brass tacks. Throughout, it seems Steven Gambrel has managed to fulfill the most difficult of briefs - to be modern and traditional all at once. The rejuvenated banker, for one, remains most impressed. Mission accomplished. 154 Bridge for Design London 2017

FABRIC OF THE PAST

he thriving area of London just around the bustling Spitalfields Market is today a go-to destination for visitors, awash with all the shops, bars and restaurants which the fashionable set have now taken as their home. But behind such modern trendsetting lifestyles, down a small quaint - and very old - backstreet, lies the home of Eleanor Jones. It’s a property that belongs to a time from long before any hipsters moved to the area, and retains that feel today. Developer Marmaduke Smith, also an advisor for the British government, built the house in 1726. He placed it on a double plot of land as a way of ensuring the resulting property would be one of the most impressive in the whole of Spitalfields. He also put in stone floors and raised and fielded paneling

to give the impression of a country manor. As you enter the wood paneled hall, you find one of the oldest mahogany stairwells in England, with three spindles to each of its treads, in addition to a fine newel post that curls around like the inside of a seashell. Aside from these fine details, one other thing that’s unexpected in the home is the sense of peace, which is no mean feat for a home located in what has become a buzzing area of central London. Sadly, after Marmaduke died, all these rich, optimistic beginnings he had striven for in the home seemed to slowly fade. It was bought by the Huguenots, who were silk weavers and members of the Protestant Reform Church after fleeing France. At this time the building was used as a sweatshop, but moving forward to the

1970s, it has even been reported that poet John Betjeman and television’s Dan Cruickshank squatted here, further highlighting the building’s varied fortunes. After campaigns to save the property from development, and several further owners to boot, Eleanor and her husband eventually bought the house, moving into it in 2000 after winning the sale with a sealed auction bid. Amazingly, for the first six month of living there the 158 Bridge for Design London 2017

couple didn’t even install heating, a period which Eleanor remembers today as freezing. Thankfully, their new home was structurally sound, and so the view was taken to keep its interior as true to the original as possible. Eleanor went about learning more about the house and discovered that it had been very much a home of two halves. One side was the servants’ quarters, while the other, more grand, half was clearly the family home.

Eleanor took a screwdriver to the wall that faced the entrance hall and discovered, as the plaster broke away in her hands, a door leading on to the hall and an old stairwell that had been boarded over and was one of two that led to the basement. Moving on from this, the couple then spent a year restoring the house, with the intention of allowing its history to speak out for itself to all those who entered

it. Eleanor studied history at university, and grew up in a creative environment. Her mother was a professional embroiderer and taught her a lot about the history of textiles, and she now buys fabric from all over the world for the fashion market. Perhaps then, it’s no surprise that the house is filled with a collection of tapestries, crewel work, ikat and, understandably, Spitalfields silk from the local area, which Eleanor has made central to the dÊcor. This links beautifully, even historically, to the home’s past as a centre for weaving and textiles in London. The drawing room had been remodeled in a Regency style at some point, with deep skirting and different types of cornice. Eleanor felt this was a part of the fabric of the building she was drawn to, and wanted to uncover more. She returned to her trusty screwdriver and began working at surfaces, this time finding areas of paneling 160 Bridge for Design London 2017

with rows of pins going all around the stiles. She believes this would be as a result of a linen scrim or wallpaper which the pins would have held in place. The decision was therefore taken to leave these historical artefacts exposed, and Eleanor describes them as something akin to archeological evidence today. Different types of woods also feature prominently around the home, and many of them would have befitted

the fashions of the time it was built in, while others would be less typical. Eleanor learned during her extensive research that when the house was built, there was a fashion for mahogany, but it was furnished with oak and walnut as well. These discoveries led to a change in furnishings for the couple, who sold what furniture they already had to remain in keeping with the original design of the house. They essentially started again, but the results have clearly been worth the effort. Today, the house is complete, but Eleanor continues to use her embroidery skills to decorate it. She describes it as an ongoing project, something that continues to entertain visitors with its history while maintaining the integrity of its role as a home. That factor remains key for the couple, they say. If it can remain feeling like a home, and not a historical document, they feel they’ve won in the long challenge of restoration. 162 Bridge for Design London 2017
