Michael Mancini “I don’t know if wood chose me, or if I had always loved the idea of creating something out of our most natural resource”, says Michael Mancini, Creative Director of Edera Bespoke, “All I know is that when I walked into The Old Curiosity Shop as an apprentice, I felt at home.” Born of an Italian-Scottish family, Mancini now has more than 20 years experience as a cabinetmaker and workshop manager under his belt, but his deep devotion to the grain and tactile quality of wood began, almost like a ‘coup de foudre’ as a 17 year old apprentice, when he would explain his youthful feelings of intoxication at the mere ‘smell of the workshop’. “Whilst learning my trade I became fascinated by wood, such as how the grain can change the look of a piece of furniture and knowing that a piece of wood could dictate how it was used”, he explains.
Mancini progressed on to being a cabinetmaker in Glasgow and was privileged to have won the prestigious McDonald Prize from The Incorporation of Wrights, for the beautiful Davenport Desk he designed and created. This award set the foundation for his future, and his reverence for the great 18th century master designers such as Robert Adam and Thomas Chippendale, has given him the inspiration and drive to see a career in craft bespoke furniture secured. In 2013, he began trading with current business Edera Bespoke, designing and producing custom-made fitted and freestanding furniture, and he now has offices in Ayrshire, Scotland, and Greville Street, London, and uses four different workshops across the UK to produce the furniture which he considers not only to be exquisite in design, but which will be an antique of tomorrow. “The ethos at Edera Bespoke is simply to create timeless furniture with distinction that is unique and personal to the client”, he explains, “My love of wood still grows, its with this passion that every piece of furniture is made”. Mancini is planning to expand by opening concessions in stores, and producing a limited edition furniture collection. www.ederabespoke.com

THE MAGIC OF HIGH POINT Twice a year the quiet city turns into the furniture capital of the world, says Dr. Rosa Otero

we, excitement, enthusiasm - like you’d find in a small child taking in the magic of Walt Disney World for the first time - these are the emotions that I see on the faces of my Salem College design students every time we visit High Point Market. Every year, these students eagerly await the opportunity to connect and network with designers and industry professionals through the Market’s remarkable number of showrooms and the abundance of firstclass, groundbreaking products from all over the world. Twice a year, the intimate and quiet city of High Point, North Carolina, turns into the furniture capital of the world and screams the latest in home furnishings and fashions. During Market time, serious faces, exotic accents, and creative minds gather together and transform High Point into a cosmos of unimaginable energy. Born as the Southern Furniture Market in March 1909, the biannual High Point Market is the largest and most important home furnishings trade show in the entire world. With more than 2,000 exhibitors spread out over 11.5 million square feet of showroom space, the Market attracts exhibitors and visitors from all over the world. During a typical visit, we go first to the International Home Furnishings Center, the main building, and then to Showplace. These are two of the largest buildings housing some of the Market’s 2000 exhibitors. Time is very limited, but the students want to see everything. “We never know what to expect,” I’ve heard them say. Over the years, Salem design students have developed a list of their favorite showrooms. This list includes the showrooms of companies such as the Phillips Collection, Thayer Coggin, Bassett, and Baker. At the Market, there are a great number of educational events scheduled for members of the industry. Additionally, anybody can benefit from a stop at the Bernice Bienenstock Furniture Library. Located in the historic Grayson House, this library houses more than 5,000 books and publications. As current Salem College student Kaleigh Workman puts it, “the High Point Market shows us a potential avenue to pursue in our future careers and field. We get the chance to communicate with seasoned designers and their associates, including recent college graduates, in a range of showplaces from all over the world.” High Point Market and the city of High Point, with their magical genius loci, have given rise to an original vision. OPPOSITES ARE ATTRACTING The new luxury has a sense of style and a sense of humour says Lynne McArdle
T
oday it’s all about the fusion of mixed materials when it comes to home design. Whether it’s traditional with modern, rough with smooth, high with low, the artful juxtaposition of opposites brings a welcome element of surprise to even the most functional of spaces. Contrast keeps things interesting and gives a room visual appeal - where individual elements stand out within a cohesive whole. Legendary interior designer Billy Baldwin once said, “The first rule of decoration is that you can break almost all the other rules.” When it comes to what goes with what, the rules have all been re-written - and are just waiting to be broken. There was a time, for instance, when it was taboo to mix warm-toned and cool-toned metals. For the last few seasons, mixed metals have dominated design trend reports, and they look as though they’ll be around for the foreseeable future. The same goes for other materials as well. Throw out labels and forget obvious match-ups in favour of a creative tension between odd-couple materials. Think of fine wood veneers paired with brass accents that have an almost industrial simplicity, or a plain glass top set on an ornately hand-carved base. When in doubt, remember the 80/20 rule: 80 percent of your interior can be cohesive in colour palette, texture, materials and style, but don’t forget the all-important 20 percent of unexpected choices that will take your space from predictable to surprising and unique. Keep in mind, however, that just like any good recipe, they work best when you use high quality ingredients. For a mix to succeed, each piece must have its own design integrity and its own solid construction. Set the mood with a few stand-out statement pieces that combine materials and finishes and let the rest of the room take its cues from them. Fine finishes: The devil may be in the details but the fabulousness is in the finishes. Specialty painted finishes that mimic natural materials - whether it’s a crushed eggshell finish or a faux malachite - are hot right now and they pair up especially beautifully with glass and brushed metals. In 88

addition to their intrinsic good looks, fine finishes multiply the options for mixing and matching, so look for finishes that will play well with others. Metallic leaf has made a big comeback in the last few years - gold and silver are perennial favourites, but platinum and a warmed-up alternative to traditional silver looks particularly fresh this year. Second skin: Beautifully finished wood veneers will never go out of style, but designers have re-discovered another new-old material. Vellum, a leather treatment originally used in bookbinding, was much loved by Art Deco designers, who applied it to everything from coffee tables to cocktail cabinets. Tactile and sophisticated, vellum mixes well with hard-edged materials such as brass and glass and reflects the re-discovery of contemporary elegance. Art and industry: The artistry involved in creating a hand-painted finish or an intricate carving takes centre stage when the design of a piece of furniture is simple and clean. Traditional looks fresh all over again when it is paired with contemporary design - sleek lines plus classic materials and please-touch textures add up to a sophistication that never gets old. Think of a match-up of luxury materials and industrial components: an étagère with hand-applied eglomise glass shelves set into a clean stainless steel frame, for instance, or a console made up of a highly detailed rococo carved base paired with a simple clear glass top. The new luxury: The old luxury was a dinner party for eight in a formal dining room; the new luxury is a couple of friends sitting barefoot on a vintage Turkish silk rug around a glass-topped cocktail table while they drink champagne and eat sushi. Today’s luxury means fine materials and beautiful finishes applied with livability and versatility in mind. IT’S A QUESTION OF BALANCE We learn from the traditional in order to create the modern says Thomas O’Brien
O
ver the past few years, in my own life and in the client homes and furnishings I’ve designed, I’ve been thinking a lot about the value of balance. There’s the balance of living in the city and longing for time in the countryside, and certainly the imbalance of work versus any leftover downtime to unplug. I think there is a balance to be regained in bringing essential domestic pleasures like cooking and householding into the equation with truly sophisticated living. In design terms, this balance might apply to how we learn from the traditional in order to create the modern. I’ve always been interested in how modernism is an echo of previous periods and places. I see Georgian classicism and ancient Greek proportions, and the simplicity of traditional Japanese design, all occurring and recombining in many of my favourite eras of Scandinavian, French and Viennese, American and English art and design. And I’m still fascinated by what is to be learned from the fantastic craft and time that go into a perfect 18th century spoon, or a fine moulding profile, or a carved marble antiquity. I study all of these sources to do my own reinventing when I design furniture, or lighting, or a room. I’ve always loved learning from collectors and gallerists, and from the in-depth, generous information that wonderful specialists and small shops preserve, like the dealer who focuses on the most special and rare Georgian ceramics and silver, or the merchant who has the eclectic, unexpected grouping of treasures in his decades-old antique store. The ingredients may be from the past, but the sum total of how they get put together is always for the time of now. So it’s time that most interests me in this equation, and it’s time that feels so neglected in the way we live and work today. Curiosity and patience are being lost in the rush to acquire more, and do less ourselves. But it will always take real time to make real things. And almost any object or influence that 94

we’re drawn to because it’s attractive is first a function and a literal record of the time and tastes it was made for. What I love is the story that each of these things can tell - who made it, and why, and how maybe it pushed the boundaries of what had been made before it. Recently I’ve designed a library and studio next to my home on Long Island. This project was in part a response to wanting a new way to work, out of the city, using a whole house and garden as a creative laboratory. And it’s been a process of incorporating history so that both house and garden look as though they’ve evolved over a long period of time, even though almost everything is new. The trick and the fun is to use historical techniques and forms to actually make something completely original. And that’s equally the case with my new home collection for Century Furniture: the old is right there in the new. Design, for me, is always about a respect for the world of ideas instead of flash and immediacy. It’s a quiet insistence on the details that make things work better, for longer; and it’s a stand for the disappearing arts of kindness and decency that make every creative transaction important to the end product, from the studio to the workshop to the front door. In my work, and I think in the dreams of a lot of clients, this level of character is the new priority, more than spectacle and status. People want to feel at home and not on stage. I’ve always wanted to make beautiful, restful, inspiring homes and furniture, which are authentic in this exact way. And I want to help people prioritize real refinement and elegance without sparing a livable, comfortable, kind, welcoming environment. STYLE WITH STAYING POWER Great interior design projects always begin with architecture says Larry Laslo
W
hether I’m designing a furniture collection, a line of flatware, a retail boutique or even a private residence, clients invariably come to me for what’s new, what’s next. Honestly, trend spotting – and trend starting – is just a mere sliver of the creative journey. While clients from Bergdorf’s to Wall Street powerbrokers crave innovation, they also expect the work to have staying power. Here, I never disappoint. I’m delighted to share some tips. First, great interior design projects always begin with architecture. “Great bones” are inherent in some projects – and it’s always a boon. It’s best if foundations are firmly rooted in the classics, and not time stamped with the detail du jour. Follow the classics architecturally. Over the years, I’ve somehow become many a magazine editor’s go-to for stories about fearless use of colour. After all, I once painted a client’s ceiling pink – everyone looked great in that room. With this, my reputation as a colour adventurer was apparently forever sealed. Yet, what’s important to remember is that there are colours of the moment and colours that return. The former should be used sparingly; the latter returned to like old friends over and over. When artwork is an important design factor, white walls are preferred. Art always rules. And next, an oxymoron. Dark rooms, challenged with the absence of abundant natural light, come alive with dark walls. Dark on dark – with light trim, I might add – is illuminating. Try it! After establishing architectural underpinnings and a colour plan, furniture and floor planning are generally my next consideration. Things needn’t match or necessarily be of the same period. Items should feel assembled over time, or collected. Harmony is the objective. Texture, pattern and colour bring a room to life. Fabric 100 Bridge for Design Spring 2016
dresses a room. For signature upholstered pieces – sectionals or large sofas – a relatively plain ground cloth is a good start. The amateur decorator may be smitten with a fabulous floral in a swatch, but put that cutting on a sofa, and suddenly there are ten thousand disruptive blooms. It’s pretty horrific. The focus is scale and proportion – so important in the artful selection of textiles, furniture and accessories. Bigger pieces look better in small rooms, and smaller pieces look better in big rooms. There’s seems to be some logic – failed logic – that small rooms deserve diminutive pieces, and larger rooms bulk up. It’s a mistake! The entire room is a palette. Items should be specified with an eye for balance and proportion. This approach can take a room – even a small one – to unexpected heights. The subject is roses – or daffodils and delphiniums, as you please! Flowers are best in water. Let me explain – and this also takes me to my final piece of sage advice on the practice of timeless design. Nature never dates. Artificial flowers – silks, plastics and perhaps even the harvest of a 3-D printer – can look amazingly real. Even I sometimes give a leaf a pinch to test its provenance. But nothing lasts forever. Flowers should gradually wither, making room for the next lush bouquet. This is a glorious thing. Change is good. And so it goes in the world of design too. I know that style with staying power can be achieved through artful consideration of architecture, colour, scale and proportion. But I always follow nature: Great timeless design is always, always evolving. THE ARTISAN MOVEMENT It’s the ultimate luxury to own something handcrafted by true artisans says Mark Moussa
I
believe the resurgence of a particular design or cultural movement is most interesting when it’s being reinterpreted in a new and relevant way. It’s easy to rehash trends, but the most thought-provoking pieces, whether in fashion or design, are created when the essence of the product has actually been reimagined to reflect today’s world with an eye to the future. Two places I am seeing this is a renaissance of 1970s design and a reinvention of the Artisan movement. Once dismissed as a decade defined by excess, I’ve seen the 1970s have a major resurgence in contemporary fashion and design in the past few years. As with most things, fashion insiders were the first group to bring back the look and feel of the ‘70s. Iconic design houses like Saint Laurent and Prada sent ‘70s-inspired looks down the runway, signaling a revival. Former 70s staples like fringe, wide-leg trousers and denim were reimagined, creating a domino effect of interest, demand and acceptance. The mid-century references we have seen dominate modern design for the last several years are now giving way to 1970s influences. Suddenly, we’re seeing graphic patterns on floors, curved furniture and a shift from gold to brass. It’s no secret that the design community and the public has had an obsession with neutrals. While I appreciate a clean slate, I’m loving the infusion of texture and colour we’re experiencing as well. There’s always a pendulum, and the realignment with 1970s design marks a distinct shift. The ‘70s was a time of boldness and that’s what I’m most excited about - bold interiors, products and architecture, inspired by the ‘70s, but made new and fresh. Another major trend I am seeing is the affinity for 106 Bridge for Design Spring 2016
handcrafted, artisanal designs. It’s no longer about cost and convenience. People are willing to pay more for goods and services that are truly one-of-a-kind. From culinary delicacies to handmade accessories, consumers crave authentically sourced products and experiences. The artisan movement is an influence that I fully embrace and feel very connected to. I have always felt that a luxury brand, no matter the sector, has a role and responsibility in linking their designs back to the craftsmen whose skills they employ and rely on. When I look at our collection, it takes me back to my travels and the people I’ve met along the way. I remember the time and care that each piece has been given sourcing the precise materials and delicately moulding each piece to secure the desired effect. To own something that’s been handcrafted by true artisans - that’s the ultimate luxury. As a designer who works closely with the craftsmen, I value how these items speak to personal and cultural narratives. India, my favorite country to travel to, is one of the most ‘hand-skilled’ countries in the world, employing millions of artisans across the nation. Despite its entrepreneurial spirit, this region is predominantly rural and remains largely un-corporatized, maintaining the essence of what true artisan culture is all about–focusing on handcrafted skills and ingenuity and the wider narratives of the cultures that inspire them. I encourage all of you to seek out products that celebrate craft traditions. It will give your rooms and life a layer of art and humanity. A NATURAL CONNECTION There is a crossover between art and commerce says Tina Nicole
T
he Emmy Award-nominated score by composer Duncan Thum includes a sweeping track he labelled Call of the Wild. It certainly sets the right tone for Chef’s Table, one of last year’s most inspirational documentary series. And, one can imagine the tune playing in the background of our present day obsessions - lofty notions of simple living and a romantic sense of beauty - influenced, perhaps, by the singular subjects which the series sets out to profile. In two episodes, we are transported to remote settings near Buenos Aires, Argentina, where Chef Francis Mallman prepares simple meals from locally sourced foods for his friends - requiring only an open fire in the Patagonia wilds of his native land - and to Järpen, Sweden, where Chef Magnus Nillson artfully composes dishes that appear to reflect the natural beauty surrounding him. Both conjure for us a world of romance and solace. There’s a sense of minimalism, yes; but of warmth and connection, too. Isn’t that the way we feel when surrounded by natural materials. Today, savvy brands capitalize on similar emotional and natural connections for engaging with their audiences. Italian fashion house Gucci cast another Swedish sensation, indie pop singer Lykke Li, in their promotional video for Spring/Summer 2015, directed by Diana Kunst. Inspired by Li’s hit song Just Like A Dream, the brand describes the project as a dreamscape of music, fashion and creative inspiration. Streaming sunlight, sun dappled interiors and a Pantoneworthy, pastel pink and blue sunset play prominent roles in the video’s attractions - also serving as a pleasant predictor for the delicate pink and copper tones trending now in interior spaces. Although white walls remain an important foundation for many living spaces, the warmer elements of soft light, wood and brass, grey accents and asymmetrical shapes, or occasional pops of bright colour, work together to keep starkness at bay and serve as an artful backdrop for special pieces. The new Whitney Museum of American Art, designed 112 Bridge for Design Spring 2016
by acclaimed architect Renzo Piano and recently opened in New York City’s meatpacking district, at one end of the pedestrian-friendly High Line park, represents an ideal expression for many of these themes. Architecture critic for the New York Times, Michael Kimmelman, said in his review of the new museum: “There’s a generosity to the architecture, a sense of art connecting with the city and vice versa.” A natural backdrop for showcasing art, the museum’s interior white walls are balanced by weathered pine floors, repurposed from old factories. The building’s exterior form is a study in geometry; its metal frame resembles an irregularly shaped, multi-faceted gem - although a beloved patchwork quilt also comes to mind. It’s high tech, and high touch, too. Some art is more ubiquitous. The crossover between art and commerce is omnipresent today, with companies like Nike soon to introduce its AirMax 2016 model, a limited edition athletic shoe design with a unique pixelated pattern positioned at each heel. It’s not quite like owning a Roy Lichtenstein original, but suspense around the launch date is at a fever pitch, with “leaked” photos of the sneaker on the Internet. White walls have long been the default hue in small spaces and it makes sense, of course, helping to expand size perception. If New York City’s new micro-apartments, set to open in the Kip’s Bay neighbourhood this Spring, are any indication of things to come, we’d all better get around to adding space-saving functionality to our designs. As designers ponder projects on the near horizon, it’s worth noting that our emotions and unfiltered reactions to the natural environment may lead to the biggest trends in residential interiors this year. LEGACY OF COCO CHANEL Her impact goes far beyond the fashion world says Christopher Guy Harrison

hristopher Guy Harrison, the CEO, Designer and Founder behind the luxury, furnishings brand Christopher Guy, heralds Coco Chanel as the main influence for his designs. Celebrated as one of the most influential designers of all time, Coco Chanel’s impact goes far beyond the fashion world and her designs continue to be echoed throughout the fashion, interiors and decorative art worlds alike. Last Autumn, an eponymous exhibition at the Saatchi gallery, Mademoiselle Privé, highlighted the breadths of Chanel’s achievements. Christopher became fascinated with Coco Chanel from an early age, captivated by the elegance, sophistication and simplicity of her ageless designs. He launched a collection entitled Mademoiselle based on his own interpretation of how Coco Chanel may have commissioned her home if she was here today. The range, which includes cabinets, beds, lighting, mirrors and upholstered furniture, is a contemporary interpretation of her classic designs. Simplicity is key when trying to achieve Chanel’s celebrated Parisian chic. For upholstery, opt for lavish materials such as rich velvets and sumptuous silks – layering decadent fabrics was typical of Chanel’s designs and resonates strongly with the art deco movement. To achieve an opulent look, pair rich fabrics with polished, lacquered hardwoods and plush buttoned details. This perfectly encapsulates the elegance and simplicity of Chanel’s pared-back look. Pale upholstery can be contrasted with dark piping, emphasising the clean lines of the furniture. Precision and symmetry were key design components of Jazz Age style so when buying mirrors, lighting and occasional tables always buy a pair to keep your room scheme well balanced. The sunburst mirror was an iconic motif of art deco style and makes a striking focal point of any living area or bedroom. For a dramatic look, choose an oversized mirror to hang over a mantelpiece or in the hallway. Cocktail hour was a well-established part of the day during the belle époque. Install a decorative cocktail bar or drinks trolley in your living room for entertaining guests. With travel becoming increasingly accessible during Chanel’s lifetime, exotic sculptures and accessories became highly covetable. Chanel herself travelled extensively and was inspired by Chinoiserie, which is evident from her apartment in the Rue de Cambon, Paris. Christopher Peacock Specialising in outstanding designs for the home, Christopher Peacock has been featured in many of the world’s most luxurious private estates across the globe writes Katy Briscoe. Beginning his career in London during the early eighties, founder Christopher Peacock worked at Terence Conran furniture store, London. After accepting an offer to work in the United States, he travelled first to Boston, Massachussetts, where he worked at the Boston Design Centre and then on to New York City. He launched Christopher Peacock Cabinetry initially with a single kitchen display inside a local interior design store in Greenwich, CT. The room vignette drew the attention of architects, designers and a discerning clientele. Christopher
Peacock Cabinetry soon proved its worth, quickly establishing itself as the paradigm of beautiful, custom, hand-crafted English classic cabinetry, but made to order in the United States. INTO THREE DIMENSIONS Recent design trends demonstrate an urge to reconnect with nature says Dominic Wood
O
ver the past five years, the design landscape and the lighting industry has been rapidly changing, transformed by the possibilities of new digital technologies. The age of the internet has meant the average consumer is exposed to more visual influences through online publications and social media platforms such as Pinterest. Consumers are seeing more bold, quirky and inventive styles and are more likely to push themselves outside of their comfort zones than ever before. Bespoke lighting still represents the most luxurious design option and recent years have seen lighting technologies rapidly develop, meaning that unique items can be manufactured without the enormous associated costs. For us as a manufacturer as well as a lighting designer, technologies such as CAD design and 3D printing mean that we can be a lot more experimental in our research and development stage. Many designers in the 20th century proved that beauty can come with practicality but were still somewhat tethered by mass production capabilities so were unable to produce affordable products. Pieces which would have previously been excessively difficult to make or expensive to cast in a foundry, can often now be made simply with a CNC machine or a laser cutter. Alongside developments in CAD technology, this means that limited edition lights are becoming more affordable to produce and therefore buy. Bespoke lighting will continue to be in demand, especially as an increasing number of young designers are working with 3D CAD software to produce extraordinary design concepts. New technologies also enable manufacturers to address key issues such as sustainability. Concern for the environment and the desire to reduce our carbon footprint has seen 142 Bridge for Design Spring 2016
many manufacturers turning towards LED lighting, which nowadays can be a more affordable and practical option. In the past, LEDs have been unattractive with clumsy design but in recent years, technological advances have meant that they can now be used in intricate chandeliers or existing designs, giving the same effect as traditional filament bulbs. While upfront costs for LEDs do tend to be higher, the overall energy costs associated are considerably lower when calculated over an entire lifespan of use. Modern day living has seen a high demand for lights that are multi-functional and serve both as task and ambient lighting. This is another benefit of using LEDs as they give the flexibility of controlling ‘colour temperature’ – for example, a ‘warm white’ could be used to create atmosphere in a dining room, whereas a ‘cool white’ provides the bright illumination for a kitchen or an office space. This demand for multifunctional lighting is also reflected in the increasing trend for rise and fall pendant lights that can be adjusted so that the drops are lower/shorter and are therefore able to provide both task and ambient lighting. Clustered pendant lights look striking when hung above a dining room table, a kitchen island or can function as a focal point in a living room. With more people than ever living in urban environments in the UK, design trends in recent years demonstrate an urge to reconnect with nature. Naturally inspired furnishings remain a key trend for 2016 with lighting shaped in the form of flowers, feathers or clouds and made using natural materials such as rattan, minerals, and wood as well as warm metals such as copper and bronze. TANGIBLE CHARACTER Michael Amato says that when it comes to fine design, it’s what it’s made of that counts
T
he modern eye doesn’t have to go far for inspiration. With the touch of a finger, our smart phones can transport us to faraway worlds and back again in mere moments. While platforms like Instagram are effective tools for sharing inspiration, differentiation in design becomes more crucial in order to stand out in a sea of posts and hashtags. In this visually oversaturated market, using dynamic materials that tell a story in a unique way is crucial when it comes to creating an impactful product. Ultimately, interior designers and consumers look for quality, creativity and personality in furnishings. To stand out in all three categories, it’s necessary for product designers to explore unique materials that ultimately define how a fixture takes place. I’ve seen a resurgence of high-quality, natural materials being used in design. Brass, once a thing of the 1970s, is on its way back in a big way. In home décor, it’s being used in its natural form, not just coated or plated. It can be hewn or polished, and I think that versatility, along with its durability, adds to its appeal. Marble, once reserved for floors and countertops, is now being used as an accent. More frequently I see fixtures where stone is used as an accent. The design aesthetic of a product can be heightened by the mixing of different materials. For example, antique brass can be combined with mirrored glass and tell a completely different story than if it was paired with say, British leather. Thinking limitlessly about mixing materials is a way to ensure constant design innovation. Admirable design pioneers like Milo Baughman and Hans Wegner are premier examples of this approach. In today’s landscape, the reappearance of copper is notable, but what’s more significant is how it’s mixed with other materials like glass or marble. There are a lot of designers I admire who are mixing materials and have helped shape the current design landscape. I’m a big fan of French-American industrial 146 Bridge for Design Spring 2016
designer Raymond Loewy, who made incredible design innovation contributions across various industries. His “nolimits” approach to design exists in today’s environment still. In present day, Alessandro Michelle, creative director at Gucci, is a great example of an artist who is creating products with mixed materials. I just saw some amazing Gucci handbags he designed that were leather and needlepoint. Another design trend becoming increasingly important is the ability for a product to tell a compelling design story, and the sourcing of materials comes into play here. I was introduced to a company in Tuscany where fourth and fifth generation glassmakers make glass the old fashioned way. When a client has their glass in their home, they are not only preserving a centuries-old art form, but they are able to feel personally connected to a special family tradition. The origin of that material adds an intimate storytelling component that goes beyond form or function. It’s personal. The impact materiality has on product is both practical and visual. To an educated, design-savvy eye, well-sourced materials look fundamentally better than those that are mass-produced. Sometimes I have to educate my clients about the importance of well-sourced materials, but once they understand that natural materials tend to have a better lifespan, they understand the value and want the best resources from the best source. At the end of the day, people’s homes are personal, and the pieces they invest in to put in them should be too. I hope that manufacturers and customers alike will continue to place emphasis on origin and materiality. I travel frequently and when I do, I am constantly gathering inspiration for new lighting fixtures. I’m very pleased that there is no lack of creativity around the globe, past or present.

estled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains just outside Vail, Colarado, is a 146 acre ranch owned by businessman and philanthropist Tad Dekko and his wife Patricia. A tasteful property that stands out for its contemporary and inspirational design, yet remains sensitive to the landscape it sits within. However, this wasn’t always the case. When the Dekko’s first purchased the ranch, the 12,000 square foot main house had a white stucco exterior that bore no relationship to the surrounding land and the nearby river. The Dekkos quickly noticed that guests would not venture outdoors and congregated inside even on the most beautiful summer days. Mr. Dekko decided to change that by hiring a team of professionals who could re-design the property and essentially make it “an experience” for his family and guests. Architect Tom Cole, Denver-based interior designer Andrea Schumacher, and builder McCord Construction worked together to create a multitude of out buildings with various purposes. Together they invite guests to meander along a creek to find a wellness centre outfitted with workout equipment, a spa and an exercise pool – all underground and covered by a grass roof. Red Cedar exterior with accents of steel, and a major endeavour of landscaping was undertaken to make the property feel like it sat naturally within the breathtaking scenery which surrounds it. Massive boulders were unearthed in every truckload - some of which were kept on site to preserve the original terrain, while most of them had to be relocated in order to reveal the master plan of the landscape architect. This Colorado Sandstone was used for the deck surrounding the house, which allows the interior to naturally flow into the exterior seamlessly. “The inspiration for our design really came from the scenery surrounding the house. We wanted to make sure that the design inside brought all the beautiful sights from outside into the house while also keeping a balance between Mountain and Contemporary concepts� said architect Tom Cole. The interior of the main house was also given a total transformation thanks to the work of interior designer Andrea Schumacher, who has Bridge for Design Spring 2016 155

used her expertise at incorporating existing furniture into her designs, which makes her designs feel like they have been put together over time, not just pulled together all at once like a show house. “All the rooms are pulled together with unique pieces that are found and mixed with new functional pieces to create an amalgamation of mountain and rustic”, she said, “And the ranch has its own distinguished logo that is embellished throughout the home.” As well as the redesigned main house and its four guest suites, the picturesque ranch in Vail Valley is equipped with a guest house, equestrian facilities, a caretaker’s house and an old log cabin, all of which have been skilfully redesigned and renovated for this project. There is also a living garage, which one can drive into much like a movie drive-in. There, guests can sit in their cars to watch a football game or movie while sipping cocktails from the bar situated adjacent to the main viewing area. The swanky guest house nearby has been decorated with an edgy 156 Bridge for Design Spring 2016

mountain-modern vibe, which Mr. Dekko had designed with 24 yearold-daughter in mind. Its sitting room is a place for reflection brings the Colorado outdoors in and mixes with refinement and includes a wallpaper called “Lumberjack” featuring a rustic sawn log pattern. A tent along the river was erected to allow guests to authentically camp out in the Rocky Mountains. It has the feel of a luxury safari tent, but with fresh mountain air rushing at you off the river. A further option for guests is a stunning traditional log cabin with rustic furnishings, sitting at the peak of a mountain and overlooking the valley. Along the river’s edge, it provides shelter from the sun and a great place to entertain in the summer months. A shooting range is nearby. This paradise project is an eclectic mix of textures, playful accents and finishes which unquestionably pays homage to the rustic landscape and elegant property that reside on the same land. T
his house was newly constructed when the clients saw it. They fell in love with the floor plan and beach location. However, they had a few concerns from the beginning. Although the house was on the beach, it had a heavy Tuscan vibe. They wanted a more beach like feel. Lighter in scale than the existing motifs, writes Denise Richards. We took this information, and working closely with the clients, went about transforming the home into something a bit more modern, with a strong beach influence. We changed all the fireplaces from heavy cast concrete mantles and surrounds, to something lighter and not so bulky. We were able to achieve this by removing over 15 tons of concrete, and adding interesting stone, tile and wood elements. We then added floating shelving, and changed the granite topped kitchen island to thick lighted glass with stainless steel trim - the effect was dramatic. In fact, changed anything that was not in keeping with our new vision for the home. We begin the transition into the residence with a small exterior vignette of seating and plants. We then added a mirror and clever light fixtures to create an inviting mood, before entering the home. The effect is captivating, especially when the light fixtures are turned on. The drama continues into the

interior entry - with its Mimi London wood table on clear acrylic legs, set-off by a beautiful coral specimen. Continuing on, we pass by the powder room and its mother-of-pearl clad walls and ceiling surrounding the white lacquer wall cabinet and lighted Grey Cloud onyx counter top. Further into the entry we pass by the bar and fireplace seating areas. With a spectacular ocean view. We enter the main part of the Great Room. With its three shell-covered mirrors, that reference portholes on a ship. The seating, all from A. Rudin, is comfortable and elegant, but not stiff or uninviting. It welcomes you in to sit, and enjoy the surroundings. The dining room contains a fireplace that is the mirror image of the one in the living room seating area. The room is set-off by a John Pomp cluster light fixture. The dining table is Berman Rosetti, as are the dining chairs with their sapphire mohair covering. The coordinating banquettes are by A. Rudin. We used the dining banquettes as an interesting detail, and to expand the limited seating area. We were able to get in two additional places this way. Additionally the table contains a bronze metal “lazy susan�, providing access to the hard to reach places. We added two freestanding buffets, one under each window on either side of the fireplace. The design picked-up the same motif as that in the kitchen cabinets. Atop each buffet is a beautiful lamp made 166 Bridge for Design Spring 2016

of slices of blue agate. The effect is glamorous and unique - just what the clients wanted. The kitchen was modified by changing the granite counter top with its thick ogee edge to lighted glass with stainless steel trim and the cabinets were updated by adding lighted glass panels. We completed the transformation by adding single drop John Pomp light pendants over the island. Continuing upstairs, we encounter the study with its beautiful desk and chairs from Planum of Italy. The ceiling is paneled with Maya Romanoff’s thin veneered wood on paper backing. It is applied to the ceiling like wall covering but gives the illusion of parquetry. The window covering is a wide striped silk, with an under drapery of linen. The chromed chandelier is from Global Views and the artwork is the client’s own. Adjacent to the study is the master suite. Here we went all in for the glamorous edge. We decided to use genuine silver foil wall covering, both flat and pinched. The bed, nightstands, lounge chairs, and tete de tete chaise are from A. Rudin. In the master bathroom, there is an oversized shower and tub area. We carried through the wall covering into this room and added large faceted chandeliers that were, at the same time, beautiful and practical which flood the room with luxury and light. One floor down is the guest bedroom. We used Berman Rosetti’s Tansu collection furniture for its clean lines and attention to detail, all set on a 168 Bridge for Design Spring 2016

hide rug from AGA John. The bedding is custom made. We decided on a more masculine look for this room despite guest bedrooms traditionally having a more feminine edge to them. We chose this route, because we so liked the furniture, which leans towards the masculine side. We can’t forget the exterior of this home. After all, outdoor living is a prerequisite for living on the beach. This particular residence has many outside levels which we exploited to their maximum usage. The first level, outside the family room, is where we decided to put a kitchen and bar area. This area is functional as well as beautiful with its custom lighted glass panel and blue granite top. The barstools are by Royal Botania. Adjacent to the kitchen/bar area is the exterior dining, complete with its outdoor chandelier and fire ribbon wall. Again, we used Royal Botania furniture. So inviting. Just inside the glass walls is the family room. Here, comfort and durability are the watch words. 170 Bridge for Design Spring 2016

ncient feng-shui tenets don’t apply. Tripp Evans and Ed Cabral manage their homes’ energy flow in a singular manner. The reason there’s no dead space has nothing whatsoever to do with Chinese astrology. It’s more a case of having to make way for well-loved possessions - heirlooms, travel mementos and salvaged treasures. Their 1,700 square foot Providence loft has only so many walls and they’ve covered every inch - hanging the preponderance of art and family photos salon-style, constructing floor-to-ceiling shelves for their seemingly endless books. Minimalists might blanch at the exuberance - Crayola-hot colours and furnishings all vying for attention. But the men’s collaboration is both clever and intoxicating. Do you know any one else who has literally mounted one front door on top of another? For all their layering, they’ve stamped a no-exceptions lid on cutesy clutter. And when it comes to creating space where before there was none, these two are consummate magicians. Take the pergola, which defines the dining area. Its regal shape conjures separateness without diminishing the open layout. And closets? The one adjacent to the kitchen has become what the duo jokingly label their “phone room.” In need of a place where they could tackle paperwork and monthly bills, they removed the door and added a small desk - Evan sawed the ends off a country table
and wedged it inside against the far wall. A coat of black paint revamped the interior, transforming it into a swank showcase for a gleaming silver collection. Around the corner, a wee linen closet got a snazzy makeover too. So long towels, hello sophisticated mirrorlined bar complete with glass shelves. Evans, Wheaton College’s art and art history chair, and Cabral, executive sales director at the Providence Journal, each had a home prior to 2005. When they decided to merge, they faced a major task of weeding out and pairing down. Although, surely, those terms are oxymorons applied here. Dazzling DIY projects, the most recent being the island’s preppy stripes preceded by silver-leafing the kitchen cabinets, continue to unfold as fast as new acquisitions see the 10 foot high sculpture in the dining room arrive. Evans handles most of the work himself. Cabral is called upon for consultation. “We pretty much decide everything we’re going to do together,” says Evans. “But I’m more about the carpentry and Ed is the one with a wonderful colour sense.” Colour is a thread that winds throughout the rooms pulling the eye up a yolky-yellow wall or along the narrow hall to a mini-Alicein-Wonderland door. And it doesn’t grind to a halt in the private areas. Bathrooms and bedrooms have their own vibrant splashes to go along with their generous share of art and accoutrements. You’ve heard the tired “everything has a story” bit. But in this case, Bridge for Design Spring 2016 177

it’s true. The stately mirror in the powder room, for instance, is actually army-issue. “My mother swiped it from an old officer’s club,” Evan a military brat - laughs. The pine dresser beside the owner’s bed was crafted on his grandfather’s farm. Keep in mind, before they moved in, this loft was an empty canvas. The Providence-based firm of Durkee, Brown, Viveiros and Werenfels had restored the 19th century industrial building, added the spiraling staircase and freed the beautiful windows blocked by previous misinterpretations. But it was Evans and Cabral who insisted on noir ceilings and unpainted floors. All the better for their inspired décor, which reaches a grand crescendo on the second level. Following their more-is-better-than-less sensibilities the ingenuous pair devised an exotic guest den. Evans built the picturesque bookcases and bed. And a trip to Marrakech yielded lanterns and camel seats to bring it all to life. Fired by a characteristic Moroccan palette this could be the 178 Bridge for Design Spring 2016

A spacious outdoor deck supplements the cosy quarters making it even more inviting, if that’s possible, for visitors who are bound to want to extend their stay. To get the look: Frame it. Family photographs are one-of-akind keepsakes. Buy ready-made frames or hand the pictures over to the experts at Arnold Art, Newport, and Middletown; or Picture This, Providence and Wakefield. Kick it up a notch. Incorporating a few unconventional pieces and embellishments raises the interest level. Comb diverse sources like tag sales and high-end haunts like Bernadette Livingston, East Greenwich, and Antiques & Interiors, Providence. The latter has a fine supply of mid-century offerings. Start an art collection. Attend RISD sales and frequent local galleries. Scouting missions to The Bert Gallery, the Adam Tamsky Gallery, and Studio Hop - all in Providence - should yield gold. Invest in an antique. Take a drive to Leonard’s in Seekonk, Massachusetts, for everything from beds to harvest tables. oodwood lies at the foot of the South Downs, its three façades with copper-domed turrets looking out across a well-wooded park where sheep safely graze. It has been the seat of the Dukes of Richmond, since the late seventeenth century, when the first Duke of Richmond, an illegitimate son of Charles II by his French mistress Louise de Keroualle, came here to enjoy fox hunting in the nearby village of Charlton. Little remains of the original hunting lodge that the young Duke of Richmond rented and later brought in 1697. It had been built in the second decade of the seventeenth century by the ‘Wizard’ Earl of Northumberland from nearby Petworth, and gabled wings had subsequently been added. Sash windows soon graced the front of the house and it was given a classical makeover when the second Duke of Richmond employed the architect Roger Morris to remodel the Jacobean hall (known as the Long Hall) in 1730. Roger Morris designed a classical banqueting house in the park, its elevated position taking in the far-reaching views to the south coast and the Isle of Wight. It was named Carne’s Seat because it replaced a cottage in which Louise de Keroualle’s old retainer had lived. painter John Wootton and a pair of magnificent views of London by Canaletto, designed to hang over the chimneypieces in the Long Hall. The architect Matthew Brettingham was employed by the second duke to extend Goodwood House to the south by building a pedimented façade aligned with the spire of Chichester Cathedral. Alas, the duke died suddenly in 1750, leaving the new wing unfinished. The present appearance of Goodwood owes most to the third duke of Richmond. A short postings as ambassador to the Court of Louis XV at Versailles resulted in a gift from the French king of four Gobelins tapestries depicting scenes from Cervantes Don Quixote. On his return to Goodwood, the duke commissioned the young James Wyatt to design a room around them and sculptor John Bacon to carve a beautiful figural chimneypiece. Horses remained a central feature of life at Goodwood in the second half of the eighteenth century. Not long after he came of age, the third duke commissioned Sir William Chambers to design a new stable block. With its Doric-columned triumphal arch and pristine flintwork, the resulting building was so grand that it outshone the house. In 1801, toward the end of his life, the duke held a private race meeting up in the Downs. It was such a success that the following year he decided to make it a public meeting, and racing has taken place at Goodwood ever since. In addition to the north wing, which included the tapestry drawing room, James Wyatt designed the Orangery; Molecomb house for the duke’s disgraced sister Lady Sarah; the Kennels to house the duke’s 188 Bridge for Design Spring 2016

foxhounds; two lodges for whippers-in; and the two lodges either side of the road at Pilley Green. Tragically, Richmond House burned down in 1791, although much of the great art work collection was saved. Wyatt designed two new wings to house the art, and work began at the start of the nineteenth century. Designed in the picturesque manner to take advantage of the sweeping view beyond Boxgrove Priory to the sea, the wings were angled away from existing house. They included a new entrance hall with a screen of Guernsey granite columns, brought across the Channel on the duke’s yacht. The hall serves as the backdrop for three paintings by George Stubbs of scenes on the estate: Racehorses Exercising at Goodwood, The Charlton Hunt, and Shooting at Goodwood. To the west of the entrance hall is the Egyptian Dining Room with its striking scagliola walls and Egyptian motifs. The Yellow Drawing Room is found to the east of the hall; is is hung with eighteenth century portraits of British monarchs and family members. The fifth duke developed the racecourse, and the annual Raceweek, dubbed ‘Glorious Goodwood’ by the press of the day, became a popular addition to the English social season. Today, Goodwood is celebrated as England’s greatest sporting estate. It is the first estate on which cricket was regularly played. II fighter station), and motor sport, which brings hundreds of thousands of spectators in the park, and the Goodwood Revival which takes place at the Circuit. Goodwood House is lived in by the present Duke of Richmond’s son and heir, the Earl of March and Kinrara, and his family. He and his wife were responsible for the compete redecoration of the house, including the state rooms, after they moved in in 1994. The Large Library is one of the most beautiful rooms in England; its bookcases and ceilings are delicately ornamented with classical figures painted by Charles Reuben Riley. The small Library is a perfectly appointed gentleman’s study, fitted out in the early nineteenth century with a balcony that runs around the room. Next door is the private dining room, a circular space in one of the corner turrets, densely hung with pictures bought on a Grand Tour, including two exquisite Venetian scenes by Canaletto painted on copper. Lord March believes passionately that the family should always live in the house: “Everything we do here is centred around the house and ensures that the family can remain here for generations to come”. The estate’s stunning setting, magnificent art collection, and prestigious sporting activities all come together to give credence to the traditional epithet ‘Glorious Goodwood’. O
utfitting virtually an entire home in shades of white requires serious skill, so it’s a good thing Rita Noroña Schrager, a former New York City Ballet dancer, knows a thing or two about making the complicated look carefree. Hiring Miami-based interior designer Hernán Arriaga to help her execute her vision didn’t hurt either. The two met years ago when Arriaga was working in Manhattan and instantly bonded, partly due to their shared Latin roots – Noroña Schrager hails from Cuba, and Arriaga is from Argentina. Noroña Schrager had already secured the perfect place in the rolling horse-farm hills north of Southampton, New York: a stately four-bedroom Colonial she discovered her very first day house hunting. Ample but not overwhelming, with a win-some guest cottage and spectacular swimming pool, it seemed an ideal getaway spot for her and her two daughters, Sophia, 15, and Ava, 11 – especially since it was only a short drive from the weekend home of their father, hotelier Ian Schrager. “I appreciated that it didn’t look like every shingled building out here,” she says. “And I love the landscape – it looks more like Connecticut than the Hamptons.” Its impressive pedigree was another advantage. It had already been revamped by its previous owner, Greg Yale, a noted lighting designer, so the bathrooms and kitchen were 21st century beautiful, and the architecture had been simplified for an easy flow throughout. Since his client wanted to move in as soon as possible, Arriaga leapt

into action with his decorating partner, Fabio Lopes. Having grown up in a Caribbean country where vestiges of 18th – and 19th century grandeur are commonplace, Noroña Schrager has an affinity for the antique – but as a single mum rarely seen in anything but jeans, she prefers it mixed with the modern. Arriaga came up with a creative solution: He applied a high-gloss white lacquer to a range of French-country furnishings, right down to a pair of $50 bedside tables. “Like I always tell my girls,” Noroña Schrager says with a smile, “it’s not how much it costs, it’s how you wear it.” The shiny items lend the interiors a snazzy edge worthy of one of her ex-husband’s boutique properties (in fact, a baroque headboard in the guest bedroom was a prototype artist Julian Schnable made for the Gramercy Park Hotel in Manhattan). Employing a pale-and-natural-tone scheme throughout meant Noroña Schrager’s disparate pieces would meld seamlessly. Not that she is overly rigid about her preferred palette. The former ballerina encouraged her children to select their own bedroom hues, though in the end they didn’t deviate much from their mother’s taste. Ava chose white with black accents, while Sophia opted for white with splashes of lime-green and aqua. And in the gatehouse’s African room, earth-tone artifacts from Noroña Schrager’s travels and recycled-pine walls from an old barn in upstate New York add warmth to the white framework. For the study, she threw out the colour motif altogether. She wanted to incorporate a Cuban theme, so Arriaga suggested finding real tobacco leaves and lacquering them to the wall. Sound simple? As any cigar aficionado can attest, tobacco is known for its tendency to absorb humidity – which is good in a cigar and bad in a wall covering. But months of perseverance by a craftsman who experimented with various shellacs and finishes ultimately proved successful. Now the room is Noroña Schrager’s favourite, a gracious refuge that evokes a cool 1930’s lounge somewhere in the tropics. It’s full of unexpected touches, right down to the taxidermy cobra resting on the cocktail table. Though undeniably chic, Noroña Schrager also has a playful side, Spring 2016 2015 198 Bridge for Design Summer

Arriaga says. From a console in the front hallway composed entirely of a tangle of vines (“she loves strong shapes and natural materials,” he says), to the large sunburst mirror looming above the living room mantel, to a fanciful poolside daybed framed with copious cast-iron curlicues, her sense of fun and spontaneity pervades the space. “From the beginning we planned the house to be that way – we wanted it to be happy and inviting,” Arriaga says. “If Rita saw something she wanted, she had to have it,” he continues with a fond laugh, ticking off unusual purchases such as curly goatskin rugs, a dilapidated wine-tasting table she turned into the focal point of her dining room, and an oversized antler chandelier in the entry way. “She would say, ‘Let’s get it, we’ll make it work somewhere,’” he recalls. hen you start looking for a weekend house, you typically have a shortlist of requirements,” Dan MacDonald says. “And eventually most of them turn out to be not that important.” In the case of MacDonald and his partner, Gregg Kaminsky, Manhattan residents who enthusiastically scouted the South Fork of Long Island for a suitable perch – in part, they cheerfully admit, so their friends wouldn’t have to put them up all the time. At the top of their list was a house within walking distance of a village, so they could stroll to markets and restaurants. The property the couple fell in love with, however, didn’t come close, figuratively or literally. Known as Cow Pond Farm, the four-acre spot is just far enough away from the historic town centre of Water Mill, New York, to require transportation. The 1960s gambrel-roofed house and matching barn, now a guest cottage, are as charming as storybook illustrations, but they have no neighbours nearby and are buffered by wetlands and the eponymous body of water, adding to the atmosphere of isolation. Yet these conditions turned out to be major pluses once the men began considering the general spirit of their weekends-to-be. “We have some very loud friends,” Kaminsky says with a laugh, as the couple’s 19-yearold Jack Russell terrier, Papochino, curls up beside him. “And we’re not always so quiet either.” Life in this particular corner of the Hamptons may be boisterous at times, but the interiors the two California transplants – MacDonald is an independent film and theatre producer, while Kaminsky works for R Family Vacations, a gay-family tour operation he cofounded with Kelli

O’Donnell – enjoy here are more soothing than their high-rise city digs overlooking Central Park. “The apartment I did for them in New York City is clubby and full of the modern art Dan and Gregg have been collecting for years,” says Kathleen Clements, a Beverly Hillsbased interior designer known as Queenie. “This time around they wanted light and airy. So I went to the Water Mill, and when I saw the staircase in the barn, I was inspired to do everything in white.” Encased in a snowy plaster that gives it the appearance of a slowly uncoiling ribbon, the ascent in question rises from the barn’s open living area to a cosy mezzanine sleeping alcove. For privacy, the nook can now be closed off with sliding doors that replicate those on the front of the building. When friends with children visit, MacDonald and Kaminsky relinquish the main house and cross the gravel court to temporarily bunk in the barn, which also serves as a lounge when 206 Bridge for Design Spring 2016
they host parties. Expansive new windows flood the living area with sunlight; their rectangular shapes and leafy views complement the plein-air subjects of the room’s simply framed photographs, most of them regional beach landscapes by Tria Giovan and grandly scaled vintage images of railroads. Though the barn staircase is white - shiny, in fact, thanks to several coats of high-gloss paint – the blanched décor Clements spun off it is scarcely one-note. In both buildings, the palette is all about whisperpale shades rather than stark white: stone accents, muted fabrics, woods that look sun-bleached. A Louis XVI-style armchair is upholstered in natural linen made by Belgian tastemaker Axel Vervoordt. A slipcover of the same flaxen material traditionally used for French rain sacks hugs the curves of a wing chair, while actual vintage grain sacks have been recycled into large throw pillows. ever more inviting by washing them multiple times to achieve the perfect level of softness before they were used for upholstery. In the main house, the master bedroom is painted flannel-grey and the neoclassical dining chairs are covered in light-blue hemp. “There’s something about those subdued tones that just make people feel good,” says Clements, who brought everything into sharp focus by incorporating strong, dark accents, including ebonized picture frames and a broad-shouldered Chesterfield sofa of button-tufted black leather. Adds MacDonald, “I always gravitate to materials that aren’t fussy, like stone, leather, and wood – so does Queenie.” The great outdoors was upgraded as well. A large deck, crowned with a pergola, banked with potted Boston ferns, and overlooking 210 Bridge for Design Spring 2016
the bucolic Cow Pond, was added to one side of the main house for alfresco dining. The exteriors have been altered too, the wood siding going from a dull greyish-green to serene shades of blue-grey that look crisp and cool against the lush green trees. “This is a very peaceful place,” MacDonald says, plainly pleased with how weekends on the South Fork have turned out. Kaminsky nods in agreement, then quietly says, “Snapping turtles.” His partner looks startled and notes, “I’d forgotten about those.
