Follow the Path to Launching New Products
Have you ever been curious about how design decisions are reached and products are created? Take a journey with Norwalk Furniture as it explains how the team brings new products to life.
proved, or modified, by the Creative Director and then ultimately set into development. The Product Development professionals know how to bring the products to life and convert the designer’s visions into practical realities.
Let’s follow the creation of Amelie, one of our best-selling sofas, as we break down the process. You can view the video, “Creating Amelie” on www.NorwalkFurniture.com (under Our Story), to follow along for a visual tour. You will see our craftspeople, our factory and the products being created.
Frame builders, pattern makers, upholsterers and cost engineers work together to build each piece from the ground up. The sofas must be factory-friendly and work well for the cutters, sewers, upholsterers, springers and frame makers so that they can be produced efficiently and with care at the right price.
For generations, Norwalk Furniture has been a leading provider of fine upholstered furniture throughout the United States, and now the world. Achieving this reputation for style leadership has been hard won and is made possible because of dedicated and talented people following a decidedly detailed process that determines what products make it to market and onto retail floors.
A sample of Amelie sofa was first created in white muslin and then the proportion and sit tests were conducted by just about anybody in our plant that wants to offer an opinion. We believe the key elements in upholstery success are: Sight. Does the piece pass the eye appeal test? Are the proportions pleasing? Are the lines crisp and up to date? Is the profile on trend and fits a needed niche? “Tush” test. How does it sit? Comfort is the ultimate goal for any Norwalk sofa. Does it sit well for large and small, tall and short, men and women? Lots of work happens on firmness, sit, pitch until it is just right. Pocketbook. Is it costed right and priced right? Will it work in our target consumer’s budget? We strive for a range of pricing and styling so that our collections have a broad appeal.
Custom-Made in the USA•Inspired by the World, our tagline, well describes the process. Successful products are generated by a team that shares a good understanding of who the market is and what it wants. Our sales, marketing and merchandising teams travel the world to get to know this market, its potential customers, respected competitors and the scope of the world of design so they can bring the world of design home, to our factory and to market. Creating relevant products that are compelling and saleable is our goal. Understanding the creative environment from different perspectives is the key to realizing that goal. No one person is totally responsible for the creation of good product. Norwalk Furniture presents two seasonal collections a year at the International Home Furnishings Markets in High Point, NC and Las Vegas, NV. The product development cycle is geared around these markets.
Well, Amelie made it through all of these steps and her debut quite successfully at the April 2016 High Point Market. And even after all of that work, we waited with anticipation to see how our retail customers would react. She passed with flying colors and has made it to the coveted “Best Of” ranks. At Norwalk Furniture, we are all about great upholstery that is trend right and stylish, unbeatable in quality and comfort, and good design that is accessible and affordable.
The merchants travel trade, design and textile shows all over the world to view the latest trends and report back what they find to be new, fresh, and on-trend. The marketing team monitors the world of print and digital to see what our customers are exposed to in the media. Together, this creative team works twice a year to determine the direction of our next collection six months out. Once the creative direction is set, the in-house and guest designers present designs. The sofas must be unique, beautiful, and comfortable to attract buyers. Designs are drawn and ap42

MESSAGES
X
inSong01 wallpaper is the result of a collaboration between FEATHR and Chinese artist Xin Song, who works in the medium of collage and found imagery. Often sourcing materials from disposable modern media, Xin Song interweaves social and political messages into her delicate constructions. She finds each small piece from everyday magazines, considering their role within the broader context of her work, giving new meaning to the impermanent and value to the disposable. Within the XinSong01 wallpaper created for FEATHR, the fragments are cut and laid to create a repeating panel design that has both impact and scale as well as intricate detail. ‘While I am collecting images for my paper-cut collages, I consider each small piece and its meaning, and when each piece finds its way into my work, it brings that message and connection to the world. Most magazines people glance through and then throw away. For me, I have found importance and value in these materials as, in many ways, they mirror the world around us.’ - Xin Song

CONVERSATION PIECE Where did it come from? Where did you find it? - It is all so fascinating
S
eeking that which amuses and informs is an all-consuming affair. For a designer it is a lifetime’s indulgence. I’ve had the good fortune to travel as a young man whose family lived abroad, as a New York-based Art Director, and as a Vice President at Ralph Lauren before launching my first collection with Jonathan Charles. I have been drawn to the best addresses and vetted as many venues as my bonafides allowed and I have been fascinated by streets and neighbourhoods - the unassuming as well as the extraordinary. The Puces de Saint-Ouen, Paris’s great cultural depository, and the shops along Milan’s Via della Spiga still inspire; but how could one not also recall the charming little dress shops that once brindled 14th Street in New York - especially at Easter - or the surplus stores on Canal Street, the dull sheen of oxidized metal and tablets of colored glass. And, oh, how I love old hardware stores too; and candy shops, they dazzle. Toy stores in forgotten neighbourhoods, their ancient shelving and forgotten goods. Unexpected linen shops and stationery stores with stacks of old stock. Pastry shops and bars: Mangini in Genoa where the well-heeled Genovesi queue up for salty pasticcini, and bottles of acidcolored digestive fill rococo style cabinets from the time of Napoleon III. Everything is beautiful, everything inspires. Like the great interiors of the last century, not ones assembled under a professional’s eye (though there are many of those that are equally delicious) but ones that evolved with fancy and whim, that were pieced together with intelligence and wit and with an eye for colour, for shape, for the narrative of history; a rich stew or bouillabaisse, an after-dinner refreshment, a cocktail. Often I think of the Paris apartments of the great couturiers and the personal digs of offbeat antiquaries in the mansards overlooking the Seine on the Left Bank.
84
Bridge for Design Spring 2018
If you meander the tiny neighbourhoods, their dealers and bric-à-brac shops, you’ll find that I’m not the only one whose wanderlust has garnered an eclectic sensibility. Just look at the harvest! There’s the perfect Chinese table, waxy and the colour of licquorice, which anchors the very best rooms. Why is it that the sinuous curl of the leg on a Biedermeier table just like a candy cane twist compels? There’s the inlaid design of a cherry branch in blossom or a hand painted bouquet like faded spun sugar. And rich chestnut and toffee colours of solid woods and beautiful veneers. Can we compare the crisp upholstered sofa or chair to that Easter frock or linen doily? And intimacy and conversation: that’s what inspires, too. The scale of a slipper chair draws you in, the low cocktail bids you, its black glass surface reflecting the room. The mystery of a folding screen, dividing space, what’s behind it? The whimsy of the trestle desk whose delicate, hand turned, Louis Philippe horses belie their sturdy function, and how lovely it is to sit at and work. The Ming etagere whose 300-year-old design is fresh, and simple, and utilitarian, and exquisitely beautiful: remember the hardware store? And so it is, the conversation, where did it come from, where did you find it? What are you doing this evening? We would be very charmed to see you here. Churchman has recently designed a collection of furniture for Jonathan Charles which includes this hand-painted mahogany cabinet with two drawers and adjustable shelves with yolk shaped support, and is decorated with an elegant relief painting of bamboo, blossom and songbird motifs. PERSONALITY OF WOOD Every layer of wood finish makes the design more niche, and that’s okay
T
echnology and social media has allowed micro-trends to turn into global trends, but what I’ve noticed in the high- end market is not a shift towards sameness, but a boldness to find one’s own style and stay true to that. With this in mind, here at Phillips Collection, we have been focusing our attention on how to enhance natural materials like wood and stone. What happens to the personality of a solid wood table when you stain it and give a glossy finish versus leaving it in the raw? This is both a stylistic and durability study. What we’ve found is that every layer of finish makes the design more niche, and that’s okay. In fact, it’s exploitable. Grey Stone is a raw wood which is treated with special minerals to bring out texture in the grain. This also desaturates the yellow in the wood, allowing a penetrating, grey stain to be applied that has a cooler colour temperature. With our tables, we go in with our low sheen lacquer and the result is a wooden table full of texture that appears to have turned to stone. Grey works in so many environments that it creates a universal appeal despite being such a boldly specific finish. Burnt wood was a micro trend that has popped up in interiors around the world. Taking a product and literally charring it with a blowtorch does a few things to the wood. First, it brings out a deep texture in the grain as well as creating beautiful cracks and fissures in the surface. Second, it creates a uniform, matte colourway, hiding the superficial grain but still communicating wood by the texture it creates. Lastly, the decision to keep it matte makes it feel almost primitive. From our backgrounds in antiquities we
88
Bridge for Design Spring 2018
have found that even the most rustic, heirloom pieces can find their way into super contemporary spaces by creating just the right boldness in contrast. That is where charred, matte black finishes play such an exciting role in 21st Century interior design. Bleached is not just for the beach anymore. You’ll be seeing more and more bleached and white washed finishes making their way inland and into urban spaces. They communicate age and a certain timelessness which homeowners gravitate towards. ‘Heirloom’ no longer means a piece handed down generation after generation. It is more a feeling a product can evoke that gives you a sense of nostalgia. We see bleached as the new pastel. Whether with a hint of red or a deep espresso, brown has always been a popular finish and we are always looking for the right depth of finish so the grain is celebrated, not washed over. At Phillips Collection, we struggled for years to find the right brown, and it was only during a recent, unfortunate fire in one of our kilns that we discovered the perfect brown. In an attempt to salvage a large dining slab, we scraped off the charred top layers to reveal the unharmed core. We sealed, stained and finished the piece and realised we created a stunning finish. There is so much opportunity to bring innovation to the marketplace, and the audience is out there for any and every style. What has sustained throughout the last decade is a desire for an authentic product. Solid woods, finishes that celebrate the raw material, and a touch of surprise. It’s a wonderful and exciting time to be in the business of creating home furnishings.

HAVEN OF GEOMETRICS The high ceilings of this Edwardian London apartment create a strikingly bright space
T
his St John’s Wood apartment, designed by Designed by Woulfe, is as vibrant as the city in which it is located. The project is a block-coloured haven of geometric design, with mid-Century modern silhouettes in one of London’s most desirable areas. A combination of eras, the scheme throws-back to an Art Deco world of cocktail lounges and golden accents, a jewel of a refurbishment in a late-Edwardian build. The property is strikingly bright, aided by the team’s decision to return its ceilings to their original Edwardian proportions and the addition of a large circular mirror to bounce light around the space. Under these high ceilings, natural textures contorted into chic pieces of furniture work together to create
a bold unity about the home. The natural tactility of a bespoke axed wood console unit and a charred timber drinks cabinet come together in their bronze casting, while sumptuous leather armchairs contrast with a twisted golden table lamp. Brian and his design team worked closely with craftsmen to design and create functional and beautiful pieces of furniture suitable for everyday use and entertaining. Every aspect of this home has been carefully curated, from the lighting design to the colour selections.

AN ARTIST IN NEW YORK Anne Becker’s airy one-bedroom Manhattan apartment is the perfect space to create
F
ar-flung cultures such as those from Japan and Morocco became entwined in the style of painter Anne Becker’s calm New York apartment. The artist always knew that a ‘less is more’ principle should rule its design scheme, to keep her mind clear for her work. Located in Manhattan’s Alphabet City neighbourhood, the apartment was not, however, a simple job, and took work to achieve. It was not until a few years after purchase that the new, uncluttered living space took shape. Along with interior designer Gregory Bissonnette, a close friend, Anne joined the apartment with a studio next door. The open floor plan gives the home a sense of calm and references Asia, which Becker has admired ever since she spent a month in Japan. Creating a flow from space to space, which aids the calm feel, was key for the pair, they explain. The kitchen acts as the home’s heart, with other rooms fanning out from it. The only concession to traditional walled off spaces is a curtain which can separate Anne’s bedroom off from the lounge. Even in the master bathroom, the wall separating the tub from the living area is glass, offering a clear view across the room and Tompkins Square Park. The bathroom is a warren of nooks, one for the C-shaped bath, another for the sink, and a third for a shower and bench. The bathroom was perhaps where most thought went in the redesign, and Anne admits to spending possibly the most time in this room. The stone-floored guest bath takes influence from a different part of the world, being inspired by an outdoor shower in Costa Rica. But the significance of the great outdoors is also evident in Anne’s
love of rocks. Gathering them on her travels, the artist arranges them in delicate piles atop counters, bookshelves, and floors. The sun-drenched rooms that initially sold her on the apartment come courtesy of windows on three sides, and Gregory employed multiple tricks to channel the light from them, from glass panes to wood shutters with flower-like arrangements of stained glass and a ‘70s disco ball in the living area. Also helping distribute both light is a neutral colour palette throughout the home, with a background of dove-grey walls and pale wood floors. The goal was to make the place feel like a refuge, a hideaway from a busy New York. There are the odd bursts of colour though, from a brilliant fuchsia ikat hanging behind the artist’s desk (which is itself a beloved antique French farm table), to crimson rugs, violet throw cushions and the gold of the artist’s mixed-media works. After the renovation, those pillows served as primary seating, enabling Becker to move where she worked around the home. As more furniture arrived, the mission was to keep it all low slung, including an antique African bed now used for cocktails. Perhaps Gregory should have the last word. ‘Each time I come over she’s got a different setup,’ he says. ‘But the apartment can handle it.’ As for Becker, she couldn’t be happier in her home. ‘Whenever I go away, it always feels good walking back in the door,’ she says. ‘I tell Greg, ‘We did it - our design plan worked!’’ Gregory Bissonnette | GKB Design | www.gkbdesign.com AUTHOR Jennifer Bush PHOTOGRAPHER Simon Upton

he architecture is clean and robust. It has a gravitas to it. The materials are hard-wearing and resistant to the tough coastal climate and its winds that periodically sweep the bay. The planning of this South African family holiday home by SAOTA is nuanced and sophisticated, built to fully grasp the daily rituals of holiday living. The westerly facade of the terrace looks towards Cape Point, the most southerly tip of Cape Town’s False Bay, and offers fantastic haloed sunsets in the morning. Built at a good elevation with lots of access to the surrounding fynbos, the natural choice for landscaping was to incorporate as much indigenous vegetation as possible - surrounding the house and in the internal courtyard. The addition of three iconic South African trees Milkwood, Coral trees and Waterberries - make this an iconic, true-to-style South African family holiday home. www.saota.com | www.arrcc.com

AVID HARBER
Award-winning artist and sculptor, David Harber, has launched a breathtaking new sculpture, the Mimeo Cascade. Inspired by the calm, tranquil aesthetic of Arabic water features, the Mimeo Cascade is defined by the unique gravity-defying manner in which water falls from its copper bowl, creating a geometric ‘criss-cross’ effect. When lit, this forms an ethereal web of water strands. This piece is hand-crafted from elegant copper and bronze, with an aged verdigris finish and decorative lattice fretwork around the rim.

OVER HILLS & FAR AWAY A photographer’s weekend retreat was modernised without losing its original character
W
e’re all looking for an escape, but we all want to retain a sense of comfort as well. While solitude and quiet reflection are important, so too is the feeling that we have - or at least could - get back to nature. When busy cities and working life threaten to overpower us, it is our beloved retreats we escape to. Photographer Fritz von der Schulenburg had that same urge, but having worked with deluxe interiors throughout his career, knew the importance of retaining something of the character of any renovation, of staying true to a building’s original charm. For his retreat in Wales, he was successful. Overlooking the Marches on the edge of the Berwyn Mountains, his long house reflects his love of mountains and is respectful of the beautiful wilderness around it. The house remains hidden from view until the very last few metres of track which leads its way up from below. Fritz originally purchased the small two-storey cottage, a barn and a stable, positioned all in a row, with little trace left of the first farmer who once worked and lived there. But he saw something in the property, and so retained many of the original features including the stone-flagged floor in the cottage’s entrance, a bread oven and the simple wooden staircase that leads up to the bedroom. But there were also changes. A low ceiling in the kitchen was removed, which meant a bathroom above disappeared. But the resulting space, now stretching up to the rafters, allowed a tremendous amount of light in. The photographer also added a new bathroom and other 21st Century essentials. There’s also a natural link between the buildings. Each is linked by a low, narrow doorway, with the cottage first
leading to the barn. Here, a new living space has been created in an open plan style, with a huge fireplace, white walls and a plastered beamed ceiling that once again points to the history of the building. Snaking up to this, an open staircase takes visitors to the one-time hayloft above, which Fritz now uses as his bedroom. Beyond this, a narrow doorway leads into the stable and former byre, with the latter now utilised as a spacious bathroom. Also in the stable is a guest bedroom, which again benefits from the simplicity of plain whitewashed walls. As an added nod to the agricultural past of the space, Fritz chose to leave a metal stay and animal trough here, which would once have been used daily. The outdoor space too has been sympathetically treated, and with each of the three buildings opening out on to a terrace, Fritz was sensible to keep it in keeping with its surroundings. Stable doors open to the courtyard terrace, which the photographer had paved with reconstituted York stone, while a single piece of granite stands like a sculpture nearby. From here, that universal ideal of escaping to a natural, comfortable retreat is fulfilled to its greatest potential. As buzzards fly above, the weather might flood over the valley towards the long house. If it rains, the hillside is awash with the sound of water. Sometimes Fritz is even snowed in. And what could be more of a retreat, more comforting, more respectful of solitude, than that? iza is soon to start selling her designs in a new venture named Odalisque in Marrakech, in addition to the store she already runs in Knightsbridge. This fits well with her and Nicholas’ nomadic lifestyle, and they now spend half their time in London, half in Morocco. But if it sounds luxurious, it’s a luxury that has been hard earned. Liza spent years designing for the catwalk, and made her name in the 1980s with her iconic swimwear. These days she prefers to work with one-off designs, across kaftans that double up as works of art, in a mirror of her simpler, beatific homelife. All of this inspires Liza’s design aesthetic today. As a child she spent time in the UK and the US, and was schooled in New York. But after a move to the UK in 1968, the 70s saw her find love with Nicholas. Fast-forward and the couple’s first foray to Marrakech came in 2001. Fresh from jobs in Jaipur, India, keen to escape a cold London January, they were amazed by the sunshine and sensuality of the region. Its beautiful old textiles and tradition of handcrafted pieces also helped hugely in selling the area to them. The next task for the couple was to find a place to live. They initially looked for a riad - a traditional courtyard house - in the medina as a more permanent base, but soon widened their search at the suggestion of their friend, long-time Marrakech resident Katrina Boorman. The lush Ourika Valley, 40 minutes south of Marrakech, at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, was where they widened it to. Initially smitten with the mountains, rich colours and general landscape of the area, the couple were soon also impressed by the animals there. All of this was somewhat in contrast to the brutally unwelcoming grey riad they eventually found and bought. It had been built in the 1970s, but had fallen into disrepair. Yet the pair were drawn to the colours still inherent in the building, the flowers in the courtyard, even the birds. The three-storey house with its winding gardens and terraces, the pair
quickly realised was a steal, and so snapped it up. Today there is little that remains of that original building. Every arch was enlarged, while doorways and windows were opened up and realigned to take in the amazing vistas of the Atlas Mountains. Nicholas, who is also an architect, said he wanted to echo the Swahili architecture of Lamu, an Arab island trading post off the coast of Kenya where he spent much of his childhood. To achieve this, the couple scoured the local Berber village for craftsmen and people capable of maintaining the traditions they’d grown to love. When it came to decorations for their new home, Liza and Nicholas went to the outer reaches of the nearby souk, buying mainly from the Tuareg tradesmen they found there, purchasing interesting African pieces including beds, chairs and sculptures from the Sahara. In fact, as Liza approaches the opening of her new venture, similar items will be available in the new shop. Somehow, in the home the couple have avoided North African clichés, opting instead for white walls accented only by a palette of cranberry and eau de Nil. As a result, Liza says that in contrast to her long grey London lie-ins, in Morocco she is keen to rise and take in the colours of both her home and the natural world that surrounds it. The small matter of a pool and a roof terrace might also make you want to get out of bed of course, and ingredients you can only get in Morocco such as hisbiscus tea, Berber semolina pancakes drizzled with blueberry maple syrup and freshly squeezed Moroccan orange juice no doubt make getting up that little bit easier. In the heat of the day, the scent of orange blossom and jasmine is intoxicating. The pair’s days, they confess, are spent bartering in the souk, lounging by the wildflower-edged river or designing fabrics for their own clothing and home-textiles collections. At the house, there are occasional visitors of course, but Liza maintains her retreat is essentially something of a hideaway, a place to contemplate silence and to

be at peace. Her London life, in stark contrast, is a heady mix of fashionable openings and wild parties, even though she says that she still prefers to cook at home in her artist’s studio flat in South Kensington. One aspect of the London life that Liza does ponder when she’s in Morocco is the abundance of galleries and bookshops in the capital city. But the flipside to this is that, when on retreat, the pleasures she experiences are simpler, more innocent, and perhaps more beneficial. Lighting candles each night takes a whole hour, she says, and as the sun goes down the ritual has taken on

increased significance. Stars have more power with the absence of streetlight too, and life becomes something to be truly appreciated. Liza and Nicholas can often be found, they say, simply gazing at the night sky in wonder. It is as if they’ve become the locals themselves, in a country so different to the one in which they met. They’ve almost assumed nirvana, after a life of flashlights, art and high fashion. Quite an impressive transition.

The project was a large first-floor drawing room with three pairs of full height casement windows opening onto a balcony and overlooking a garden square. It could have been an easy mistake to break the room up by placing too small a carpet or perhaps two separate carpets in this impressive room. Fortunately, the client understood this important aesthetic and allowed Veedon Fleece and McWhirter Morris the licence to create, to the client’s delight, what is now a confidently established interior. www.veedonfleece.com

THE POWER OF CARPET Luxurious textures and striking patterns of carpets can transform a room
‘C
arpets can work fantastically in a space, and can add texture, warmth, and comfort - the luxurious textures and striking patterns of carpets can completely transform a room. The floor gives a big opportunity to introduce layers of texture into a scheme and is the final key design ingredient - it has to perfectly enhance all the other elements of the room,’ says Kelly Hoppen. ‘The floor is not just a blank space, rather it is somewhere to create character, and quite often the floor is the making of a room. Carpet offers so much potential in a space smooth carpet has an architectural quality that is almost Art Deco in style, while shag pile contrasts brilliantly against ultra modern pieces of furniture,’ she adds. Emma Cassidy, of Brintons Carpets, agrees. ‘We’re currently seeing a new direction in the way designers are selecting colours and patterns for commercial flooring. Clients are embracing change and breaking the rules of carpet design.’ ‘We’re seeing less of small pattern repeats, instead the popularity of the large-scale designs and surface patterns with no repeats. The designs featured in the carpets are works of art, and are very much part of the storytelling and conceptual development of an overall scheme. With the advanced technology available in woven carpets, we’re able to create
120 Bridge for Design Spring 2018
patterns, textures, colours and shapes that are more sophisticated, advanced and creative than ever before,’ Emma advises. ‘Instead of chasing interior trends, clients and designers are going back to a more natural and distressed look and feel when it comes to pattern and colours. Emulating naturally occurring elements like wood and marble, we’re seeing a rise in the classic herringbone, carrara marble and granite patterns, with designers combining the soft texture of carpets with hard materials, creating a juxtaposition of pattern,’ says Emma. ‘On wooden or tiled floor, a plush accent rug will add so much warmth and texture, while a daring design will offer interest,’ Kelly says. ‘Nature has always provided designers with incredible colour palettes, and is a source of great inspiration. In 2018, we will also see a rise in bringing the outside in; appearing on our carpets, through pattern, texture and colour, we will see unusual plant-like forms such as lichen, moss and bark taking the lead. The beauty of this trend is an extension of the natural and distressed look that is so in demand,’ says Emma. ‘Carpets have already seen a resurgence in popularity, and this will only increase in 2018. Expect to see more texture, as well as dynamic patterns and bold colours; instead of statement walls, we’ll see more statement floors,’ Kelly concludes.

BEAUTY IS IN THE CURVE There is something inherently glamorous and sexy about spaces with curves

magine standing in front of two sofas in a furniture shop and you’re torn. One has a curved shape, it’s a bit plumper and the armrests would wrap you in a warm hug. Whereas, the other sofa has clean lines and has strong angles but is no less comfortable. Which would you choose? It has been proven in multiple studies that the majority of the population thinks that furniture with an organic look and rounded forms is more relaxing than those with an angular design. A home is a place of peace and relaxation so what better way to achieve this than to bring back the 70s trend of curves. It is noticeable that home décor has taken a sharp turn from minimalist clean lines to maximalist. Rich paint colours, bold textured wallpapers and fabrics layered with metal and dark wood highlight curved shapes. Perhaps it’s down to a nostalgic yearning for a simpler time, or purely a reaction against a decade or so of Skandi grey walls and bleached wood that have dominated our homes and style pages. But curved furnishings have definitely stepped up to take their moment in the spotlight. This trend has made its way into the rug market too. Rugs are often rectangular in shape, so a curved rug is an instant talking point. Where design and furnishings have been kept
122 Bridge for Design Spring 2018
to a minimum, a curved rug has even more opportunity to define the style of a space. They tend to soften the harsh and sharp lines that some spaces have. Partnered with small and functional furniture pieces, it can really make for a powerful and unique vignette. There is something inherently glamorous and sexy about these spaces. Soft and plush, curved furnishings aren’t just limited to the living room. A circular rug could be used in an entrance hall to gravitate the attention to the centre of the room. Headboards with circular edges create a more calming environment in the bedroom, perfect for that great night’s sleep. A semi-circular sofa wrapped around a bold circular rug in front of a fireplace emphasises the cosy atmosphere. The possibilities are endless. You can also play with colours and texture to create the look for you. Deeply layered, bold colours create a maximalist setting with refined extravagance which evokes a sense of drama and luxury. For those who want to go curvy this season, try bringing visual interest into your space with a curvilinear rug. After all, curves aren’t only en vogue on the runways - they’re also infiltrating the design-sphere, and rightly so!

he property was built on the site of a previous home in a period walled garden. And while permission had been granted to extend the footprint of the new home, there were height restrictions on the development. Designer John Evans was appointed early on in the process of the build, and was actually asked by the client to work alongside the builders. ‘As there was no architect involved at this point we took over an initial set of drawings, and produced and worked on the architectural layout and drawings of the interior to produce a solution that met the clients’ brief,’ says the designer. John says the brief developed, and altered, as the project progressed. ‘I always felt that the property had more of an American feel about it than European. The clients were very closely involved in the project, and as we got to know them and their ideas for what they liked and what they wanted to achieve within the spaces the brief really progressed.’ The main issue with the project was the speed with which it needed to be completed. ‘The builder was on site and progressing with rudimentary drawings, but he was obviously anxious to receive as much information as possible in the form of working drawings as soon as possible - this lead to some very late nights for our team,’ remembers John. The shape of the new build also threw up some problems. Due to its design, with pitched rooms on the first floor, it became impossible to tell what sort of angles and lines would appear when working from architect drawings alone. ‘The first thing we had to do was model the building three-dimensionally with computers, so we could plan the interior space without clashes with the structure,’ John says. All of the fitted furniture was designed by the team at John Evans Design especially for the project, right down to the staircases, kitchen units, laundry room, family room storage, chimney pieces - including the centrally located open fire - fitted cupboards, cabinets, wardrobes as well as some free standing units. ‘We handled the specification of all the curtains, poles and fitting together with the upholstery of some of the fitted furniture. Although the client was very involved in the project and had a strong vision of the way they wanted to furnish the house, we worked with them to achieve this,’ remembers John. A single-minded approach from the client, John believes, helped the project run smoothly. ‘They had a very clear vision of what they wanted to achieve with their new home, but they were very open to suggestions and it became very much a collaboration,’ he says. ‘We like to be fully involved with our projects and with this one especially we were designing things right down to the last detail, issuing over 250

drawings, including working ones.’ The team were also on hand to advise the clients on exterior details and even specific elements of the garden layout. One unusual design quirk that might need explaining is the cool Italian car in the hallway. ‘The clients are very passionate about cars and have an extensive collection - and we all liked the idea of placing this lovely little Fiat 500 in the hallway as a talking point,’ John explains. He believes that as a fully

working home, the house should reflect the family that lives in it - right down to the young children. ‘The items placed about the house are a reflection of the occupants, and always should be,’ he adds. One area however that doesn’t need such an explanation is the home’s ‘man cave,’ although John uses another term to describe the space designed expressly for relaxing in. ‘We prefer to refer to it as a games room! It was designed to be multi-

functional, as our clients use it for entertaining, and to this end we designed a fully fitted bar that any small hotel would be proud of. It also doubles as a cinema room as the curtains to the stage area retract and a projector descends from the ceiling, with comfortable seating and all the facilities make for an ideal place to watch a film,’ John says. The room also has another way of being utilised, due to a strategically placed door. The raised area can be

fully functioning as a stage for performances by the children, or for musical events. In conclusion, John explains that the client was very happy with the end result. ‘It’s given them every facility they would ever want without needing to move, and it’s been tailored to fit their vision,’ he says.

here’s a street in Beirut that warrants a visit. The Rue Sursock is historic, sure, but many streets in that region of the city are. This one though, named after an aristocratic family in the Achrafieh district, boasts mansions, palaces and other 19th Century luxury dwellings. It’s also where interior designer Ramy Boutros has created a unique pied-a-terre for a couple from Kuwait who wanted to experiment with a sense of exoticism through the use of regal interiors. Situated on the first floor of an ancient two-level Lebanese house, the apartment was created some years back when the home was first split into two. Ramy explains that the facades of the home were reworked at the same time as the layout for this project. The floor originally accommodated 650 square metres of bedrooms, and the designer added large windows to the main living space which afforded the home views over the nearby gardens of the Sursock Palace, which the designer describes as the city’s grandest house. Self-confessed art lovers with a keen interest in history, the owners of the home already boasted similar properties around the world, and each of them with unique locales. Undoubtedly part of the reason that the apartment on the Rue Sursock was initially so appealing to them was that it fitted so perfectly with their portfolio of properties. The pair wanted a home that was full of character, Ramy explains. Mainly developed in the 19th Century at a time of emerging discovery in both art and architecture, the Orientalist style of the home reflects perceptions of Asia as seen through European eyes. For Ramy, this meant that when it came to the redesign of the home today, many of the traditions of later years, and moving on into the 21st Century, needed to be adapted to remain in keeping with the style of the home.
The stained glass windows, decorative woodwork and the five-metre-high ceiling were just some of the characteristics the team wanted to highlight. The impressive 3.5-metre high doors that serve as the entrance to the apartment are really the key statement of the project, Ramy believes. They add to the history of the interior space as well somehow, as they beckon guests in. They make the space sing, inviting visitors to question the home’s back story, further enhancing its heritage. Ramy also aimed to further recreate the past in this timeless space – which was now bathed in natural light - by adorning it with rich textures and sumptuous materials, as well as using a palette of powdery colours. For the floors, each portion of paving was laid according to traditional techniques in order to give the appearance of age, and to act in keeping with the trusted and well tested methods of the past. There is opulence for certain, but it is one that is still practical - like the old adage of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. It really comes down to a matter of respect. An abundance of wood in the design scheme also provides a warmth to each room, but the atmosphere retains an elegance because of the material as well. Ramy describes the overall feeling as one of ‘sensuality, fantasy and passion’. However, the home - like all good interior design projects - was a combination of Ramy and the owners’ tastes. A key element of the space is the lighting of artworks and precious objects from the owners’ collection, each executed in a discreet and natural way. Regardless of the time of day, in each and every nook and cubbyhole the sublime pieces the couple have collected throughout their lives stand out proudly. Ramy firmly believes that lighting contributes to almost 50% of the success of an interior, and in this home the team carefully considered how to position the doors and windows

just so, to make the most of the artful objects, and also employed the trick of double exposure to create the right balance between light and shade. The studio of the late Joe TohmÊ - who was based in Lebanon – created the dining room table and chairs, consoles, coffee tables, armchairs and daybeds, while Orient expert Gabriel El Daher sourced rare pieces to complement the decoration. Ramy was also on hand to scour the globe for suitable pairings with his clients, and they flew to Paris, London and New York to seek out more furniture and accessories.

But what drove the designer, across the entire project, was essentially the story - of the clients, the building and the history of both. And through the careful use of personal artefacts, a touch of their personality, and the grandiose architecture already inherent in and around the Rue Sursock, a new story emerged - one of textures, materials, colour and history.

he estate the home was located on certainly had prestige, having once been owned by a former mayor of Los Angeles. The Carbon Beach dwelling boasted eight bedrooms and 12 bathrooms, but it needed to accommodate a family with many children and allow them to enjoy the luxury of the surrounding area while ‘not being on top of one another,’ David remembers. The wife, who David worked with initially on the project, was a philanthropist, but also a collector who favoured early 20th Century art with an emphasis on a ‘California aesthetic’. The home the pair was working on was to be the family’s vacation getaway, and the clients were already fans of the area and wanted a new take on old Californian craftsman style. The client described this aesthetic to David as having ‘charming features and intimate proportions.’

A further key guiding principal for the project was for it to be a place of peace and relaxation, but also one of family fun, as befits holiday home. Inspiration also came from the home’s close proximity to the ocean, and the client wished to reflect this too. To achieve this goal, neutral and blue tones and hues were used inside, along with seashells and sailing decor pieces. David believes that in doing this, the concept was to bring the outdoors in, while still nodding to the east coast craft style the clients so loved. The footprint of the home today came about by the owner gradually acquiring other parts of the estate. They originally owned just a single beach

house on the same land, but over a number of years they combined this with two other properties that later became available. In total, when combined, the buildings totalled almost three-quarters of an acre, not forgetting the hundreds of feet of beach frontage panning out on to Carbon Beach itself. However, as David remembers, this all became history when the decision was made to tear everything down and start from scratch for the new project. ‘At first we debated whether to simply remodel, but eventually it was decided to tear everything down and do a ‘ground up’ project,’ he remembers. Perhaps understandably, such a decision lead to an inevitably large amount of planning and approvals

from the Coastal Commission. David looks back on this as a ‘long and challenging endeavour.’ Nevertheless, all of these logistical challenges were eventually overcome, with the resulting home more than compensating for them. The resulting mansion now includes nine fireplaces, many lavishly sized main rooms - including a leviathan double-height living room with a disappearing wall of glass - a sport court, and to cap it all, an ocean side swimming pool and spa that is protected by a frameless glass wind screen. There are also a couple of balconies and terraces located off guest suites and a deep and a wide terrace on the second floor that is accessible through the master suite, or by the stone staircase that leads up from a terrace below.
168 Bridge for Design Spring 2018
Inside the mansion, the furniture had an equal level of attention paid to it. ‘Each furniture piece was custom made to be easy, casual and elegant,’ explains David. The clients’ extremely varied lifestyle also helped in setting the tone for the decorations and pieces in the new home. ‘The owner entertained formally a lot, so it was important to have nice pieces, but because it was also a place for kids and dogs, with sand and water from the beach, everything in the home - from furniture to carpeting and flooring needed to be forgiving and functional,” he adds. David says his favourite part of the home is the kitchen. ‘I love the kitchen, and also the family breakfast room area. It’s a great huge space with an ocean view that opens up to outside,’ he says. again, the lifestyle of the clients heavily determined the room’s design. ‘It’s the perfect space to entertain easily, with plenty of room for cooking and preparing meals. The kitchen, especially while on a family vacation, tends to be the family gathering place and everyone just hangs out there to have a good time, and you can come in and out from the beach to refresh yourself,’ he adds. LIVING Once considered the go-to dwelling for artists and musicians, New York loft spaces can work for families too, as one London couple found out WORDS KATHLEEN HACKETT PHOTOGRAPHS WILLIAM WALDRON

t wasn’t initially supposed to be such a perfect fit. Harriet Maxwell Macdonald and Andrew Corrie purchased a 3,000 square-foot loft in Manhattan’s SoHo neighbourhood back in 2007, with an initial view to doing it up and selling it on. With the apartment’s length stretching an entire block, Harriet initially thought it was too large for comfy living. Moving over from London via the West Village, and now with three small children in tow, the couple soon became enamoured with open plan living’s charms. In fact, it transpired that there was more room to run and play in the apartment than in most of New York’s parks. What’s more, the building is just five minute’s walk

to Ochre, the interior design company the couple brought to America from the UK in 2005. The threeblock commute means that, when necessity demands and if they need to rush home, it’s easy. Rather than redesign everything, the pair say they were keen to keep the character of the original space, wonky angles and all. They did, however, reverse the layout, gutting the internal walls and reconfiguring them for living and sleeping areas. The previous owner, a potter, had her former studio in the front of the building, which is now the family’s living area. Now at the back, you find the couple’s master bedroom, bath and dressing room, as well as a children’s bedroom suite.

After battling with restoring the original wooden floor, the couple brought in pine boards, in a bid to keep uniformity throughout. They then made this look vintage with a wash they concocted themselves from water thinned Farrow & Ball Hardwick White. Moving upwards, the smooth palette of colour is continued effortlessly. The colour scheme was key, the pair say, focused on greys and browns to keep it ‘warm and approachable’. The decision to mix new and vintage furniture also aided this quest. In the living area, metal-framed cocktail and nesting tables sit beside a tufted sofa rescued from

a grandmother’s barn in Scotland. Elsewhere, a slope-armed settee and chair lounge beneath an outside tiered wheel of gleaming glass drops, a fixture Macdonald co-designed with her Ochre partners. Also produced specifically for the space was a metal bookcase that spans one wall of the library, while a pair of 1830s’ gesso mirrors and a French elm table of the same era lie by a nearby wall. Despite the challenges of city living, the couple’s initial desire to live in a more traditional family home has passed. Lofts can be the perfect family space, despite popular perceptions.

T
hat’s not to say there wasn’t pressure - the clock was ticking to get the work done before the birth of the couple’s third child. ‘We were going through a very busy time in our lives,’ says the client. ‘Maurizio and his team quickly understood that we were stretched and shielded us from all the admin happening in the background so we only had to focus on big decisions.’ The entire project took just six months, with any new items of furniture delivered in a narrow two-week window. Maurizio also knew that he was working on their ‘forever home’, and early 19th Century five-storey terrace that they wanted to combine period charm and contemporary living by blending art, design and family heirlooms. Also of note was the fact it’s a corner house where light enters on three sides, which eliminated the dark zones typical of these properties. There was no structural work to be done on the property, but there was a fair amount of art and furniture from previous homes for Maurizio and his team to work into the new one, which he admits was challenging. The function of many rooms in the home also shifted. Part of the design brief was for three different lounge areas, with differing levels of formality. ‘One of the first things we did was to take pictures of all the artworks and existing furniture that was to be re-used. The artwork was the most important aspect as we had to make sure the new fabrics used for upholstery and curtains worked in the room where the art was going to be hung,’ explains Maurizio. ‘We had weekly meetings presenting ideas and textures, but also took the client to all of the different suppliers to view some of the furniture,’ he adds. In the kitchen, the family wanted to keep the cabinets and appliances, but update everything else to make it more modern. To achieve this, Maurizio chose to change the worktop from wood to stone with a glass splashback, as well as using an oval dining table with slim lines to make sure it didn’t look too
big in the space. ‘It was important to use suitable materials for the metal door and wooden details, and we also carefully selected the fabric used for the two roman blinds to make sure it was part of the same colour scheme,’ says Maurizio. The living room was originally used as a dining area, connected by a double door, and it was this lounge that the family requested be used as an everyday space. It needed to be easy and comfortable, and Maurizio used modern elements such as the Terzani chandelier to match the modern style of the nearby kitchen, but also contemporary textiles for the upholstery and the curtains. The fireplace was an original feature, and was left to complement brickwork elsewhere. In the master bedroom the brief was to re-use the client’s existing bed and bedside tables, allowing Maurizio to choose all of the remaining furniture, the textiles and wallpaper. ‘To be able to create something fun and unique we custom made the drawers and console table using different textures from antique glass, leather and lacquer finishing,’ he explains. ‘We used the fireplace as a reference point, planning the layout around it, with the existing en suite connected via a walk-in wardrobe.’ A further bedroom was funkier still. Maurizio used the initials of the child whose room it would be as bedside lamps, hung either side of the bed and custom made for this project. The team also used his favourite colours - blue and red when choosing furniture and accents. They were even asked to dedicate a space for a drumkit. Such a quirky list of requests, alongside the strict timeline, might have lead to disagreements, but quite the opposite. ‘Not only did we like Maurizio’s ideas and style, but we also thought he was very professional in the way he executed the project,’ the client remembers. ‘He accompanied us all the way, from discussing the use of each room, to choosing furniture, incorporating our existing furniture, deciding on colour schemes and fabrics, up to the

RETURN
ENGAGEMENT Interior designer Stephen Sills has a style which people love, but one client liked it so much she invited him to rework her Manhattan apartment, which he himself first created over 20 years prior WORDS KATHLEEN HACKETT PHOTOGRAPHS WILLIAM WALDRON
S
tephen has long been celebrated for his minimal and timeless work, at some of the most prestigious buildings in the world. But something about the challenge of reworking a creation of his own, of challenging preconceptions about what’s precious - one’s own work - appealed to him. “All rooms date, even if done in a classical way,” he says. “There really isn’t a space that couldn’t use a makeover every now and then.” Stephen’s portfolio includes the St. Regis hotels in New York and Washington D.C., as well as the Connaught in London. But 20 years is a long time, and especially in interior design, with styles coming and going and with what was once fashionable becoming passé practically overnight. But that’s how long it had been since Stephen first worked on the Manhattan penthouse of long-time clients (and close friends) Barbara Cirkva and John Schumacher. On his first visit in the early 1990s, the designer had been met with a series of large rooms with high ceilings, and no architectural detailing or embellishments. Stephen proceeded to add multiple Corinthian columns, a porthole window in the foyer and muscular molding throughout, turning the space into an extraordinary neoclassical palazzo. Barbara and John were, by their own admission, Italy obsessives, and had wanted their Upper East Side home to take them back there every day (they even married in Rome, with Stephen as a witness). Both too were well aware of in the shifting of tastes. Barbara presides over Chanel’s fashion, fine jewellery, and watch collections in the US, while John is a former fashion executive who now runs Fleur, their garden antiques shop in Mount Kisco, New York. Through her role, Barbara oversees six ready-towear lines and two couture collections each year, and thinks the beauty and simplicity of the Chanel label is key to the fashion house’s appeal in such a trend-driven business. She believes these very same principles apply to interiors as well as fashion. What
eventually turned out to be a major redecoration of every room began as a simple refreshing of the style and colour palette. For example, the once jade green walls, plum carpet and green tables had over time become too dark and feminine for Barbarta’s tastes. As a reaction to this, Stephen came up with a softer palette and a well-honed collection of antiques that he combined with a Robert Kelly stripe painting that harmonises with the model of a garden sphinx that sits before it, mixing up the centuries before the viewer’s eyes in an effortless fashion. This sense of ease moves through into the living room as well. Here Stephen toned down the parchment and goldenrod walls that were originally there from his work 20 years ago, and traded out the heavy gold silk-taffeta curtains for the same design, just in a lighter linen. He painted the fireplace and terra-cotta mirrors above in a style that would to mimic stone, and an 18th Century cabinet and a collection of 19th century studio drawings were placed with a pair of graphic vintage French floor lamps. These now sit where a pair of pink porcelain Napoleon III ones once resided. But that’s not to suggest that everything about this revamp-style project was plain sailing. Barbara, in fact, thought at first she could live with the dining room as it was from 20 years prior, thinking it fitted well with the updated home. But after a year of trialling it, living with the contrast, she admitted it simply didn’t work, and so looked for a change of some sort. The answer was to take down the Empire bronze chandelier and the early 19th Century table out from beneath it, to be replaced by a bronze pendant which would eventually hang above a more minimalist table designed by Stephen himself. Even this minimalism was countered buy the designer, as he went on to forego any further simplification by placing a pair of Puglian urns beneath twin gilded sconces, giving the room his trademark dose of grandiosity. The friendship

between client and designer obviously helped when it came to decisions such as this, when other, less friendly partnerships might have split hairs or demanded their own way. Barbara, John and Stephen have attained something of a design shorthand between themselves over the years, and respect each other too much to quarrel. Barbara says that as time has gone by, Stephen has been able to observe the way the couple interact, and has learnt about the way they like to live, and how it should be styled. There is a similar interplay between Stephen’s understanding of the art world and the way it translates into his design work. Modern art informs

his design vocabulary - the tools of his trade. ‘I always analyse modern art,” he admits. “I’m looking to decipher who are the greats and who are simply fashionable. Are works by Christopher Wool or Richard Prince simply beautiful to look at or are they transcendent?” For her part, Barbara is thrilled with the aesthetic Stephen has brought to her home - again. She says that she’s surprised and delighted every time she walks into her home. And there’s nothing quite like that, especially second time around.
