he brief for ReardonSmith Architects was to create an entirely new Savoy Suite and a renovated Royal Suite. The two suites have been conceived to introduce an even greater degree of luxurious sophistication for the hotel’s most distinguished guests. Well-versed in the complexities of the hotel’s infrastructure from its Edwardian era beginnings, through Art Deco period expansion and 20th Century upgrades, the architects were uniquely qualified to design and coordinate this latest, and especially prestigious, refurbishment at The Savoy. With its procession of rooms spanning nearly all the fifth floor, including the space where Monet painted his panorama of the river, the Royal Suite has been refreshed

to enhance the heart of the space and encourage greater flow between the rooms. The office and the living room in the previous configuration were opened up to create a large, opulent space, at the heart of which is an exquisite new bar clad with faceted black glazing in gold trim. A Life in Miniature T

imothy Richards makes exquisite plaster models of well-loved buildings, from the Pantheon in Rome to the Chrysler Building in Manhattan, which attract high profile clients from around the world, including Sir Terence Conran, to Harvard University. These treasures add lustre to interiors they are as seductive on a desk as if they were to be displayed in a bespoke cabinet. Timothy loves and understands architecture which adds an emotional quality to his models, beyond technical perfection. He masterminds a team of 10 in a workshop which was converted from a Victorian school building in Bath. The origins of his craft go back to pre-revolutionary Paris when Jean-Pierre Fouquet and his son, Francois, were making models of this quality.

Richards has worked as a sculptor and model maker for the past 25 years. Over the decades, he has miniaturised, among many other masterpieces: the US Capitol, the Flatiron Building in New York City, the Lincoln Memorial, Buckingham Palace, the Glasgow School of Art by Charles Rennie Mackintosh with its windows and balconies in pencil-thin lead, and a 35cm Ca’d’Oro in Venice with a turquoise glazed panel at the back. The models are handmade in British Gypsum plaster, using a complicated process that involves constructing a master from styrene sheets, then casting in silicone-rubber moulds. Most models range in size from 20 to 70cms, and the accuracy is so remarkable that people can mistake photographs of them for the real thing.

He has completed more than 150 models in Gypsum plaster, an effective masonry look-alike, and for tiny details he uses brass, lead and glass. Everything is done by hand by the workshop team. From the age of five, he made models of ships from card or wood - a box of cornflakes was transformed into a tea clipper. He went to art college in Taunton and traveled around Europe looking at furniture design (he loved the Wishbone chair by Danish designer, Hans Wegner). He taught art and design for six years before he set up his model making workshop in 1988. He showed his first four models, which included a Georgian terrace house, at various art fairs around the country. Sheer persistence won him a commission from Sir Terence Conran to create a 20cm Michelin Building, complete with the tiny figure of Bibendum.

Over the past 25 years, he has completed over 150 commissions. Some models are produced in blue, which look ethereal, as if they were illuminated from within. ‘The colour strips out the history from a building and allows the observer to look at the pure form,’ says Richards. He has attracted collectors from around the world, with a particularly large following in America. In 2013, he won the Arthur Ross Award, the US Institute of Classical Architecture and Art prize for artisanship in the classical tradition. Bath will celebrate its 250th anniversary with an exhibition of Timothy Richards models. ‘From Rome to the Royal Crescent’ which runs from February 11th until June 4th. One Royal Crescent is a magnificently restored Georgian town house that creates a vital picture of life in late 18th Century Bath.

The brief for this 5 bedroom Dulwich family home renovation was initially to focus on and re-plan the ground floor. Rooms were moved around, every space was given a specific function and a flow was created within the property. A wall was removed to create a larger kitchen family area and new wider doors were installed to reinforce the connection with a well appointed garden. The house now feels like a grand home rather than small individual units that didn’t relate

to each other. The client liked contemporary styles such as those of Kelly Hoppen, yet she wanted a scheme that would be far richer in colour. The challenge was to introduce colour and still keep that feeling of elegance, and a flow between the different shades and tones in different rooms that still worked together as a whole. Architecturally, a lot of structural changes were made to the room layouts to better zone the house. The original layout featured numerous arches which were immediately converted back into more contemporary straight lines. The end result was a total transformation of the property which has left the client extremely pleased. “The results have been amazing. I now have a luxurious home that has doubled in value since work was completed. The service that Tailored Living provided was second to none and I would recommend their very professional and bespoke service.”

THE ART OF MARQUETRY Marquetry is a vessel for creativity to explore different motifs and colours explore different motifs, patterns, and materials,’ explains Sowter, cabinetmaker, is passionate about Jonathan preserving the Old World techniques of craftsmanship in Jonathan Sowter. ‘Wood is the most common medium, but

his designs.‘Marquetry has become a dying art form, thanks to modern technology that has replaced it with digitally printed surfaces that imitate the antique look,’ he says. ‘My goal is to educate and inspire designers and consumers about the art of marquetry by demonstrating its process in various fashions. Before one can create these beautiful decorative patterns, they must first learn the process itself.’ Originating in the early 16th Century in Florence, Italy, marquetry started out as inlaying marble and other stones and eventually transformed into wood-based veneer inlay in Antwerp in the late 16th Century. Shortly after, the French picked up the craft and added their own flourish to create the now iconic ornate floral patterns that marquetry is most commonly associated with. Achieved by inlaying different woods and other natural materials onto a surface to create a picture, marquetry requires both an artistic and scientific approach. Precision and a steady hand are absolute prerequisites; hundreds of hours are poured into the apprenticeship before someone is ready to transfer his or her skills onto a real surface. ‘I’ve always regarded marquetry as a vessel for creativity to 66

the real beauty - and thus the difficulty - is incorporating other elements into the wooden surface. I’m always challenging my craftsmen and design team to find unique and unexpected materials to add dimensionality to a piece of furniture. Mother of pearl, brass, and bone are just some of the elements we use to elevate the design.’ Jonathan’s team of craftsmen can create almost any motif and pattern beyond the heavily ornate designs typical of 17th and 18th Century English and French styles. His most current focus is creating optical illusions using different wood veneers. Referencing trompe l’oeil effects, these modern iterations bring a fresh perspective to the Old World technique. One cabinet, in particular, creates the popular fish eye lens using a four pointed star pattern that graduates in size closer to the center. ‘While buyers may not be fully on board with the Rococo or neoclassical style designs quite yet, I think they’ll want elements from those eras, like gilded details, carvings, and inlays that will translate nicely onto modern silhouettes. People are looking for an artisanal connection that demonstrates the authenticity of the craft rather than a digitally printed version,’ he predicts.

THE FINISHING TOUCHES What we touch plays a vital role in shaping our experience of a space

he celebrated American interior designer, Eleanor McMillen Brown, said ‘the most important element in decorating is the relationship between objects - in size, form, texture, colour and meaning.’ Of those five criteria, texture is most often overlooked. What we touch and feel plays a vital role in shaping our experience of a space. Science is now proving that texture and touch play a much larger part in forming the interactions and emotional experiences we have with our surroundings. For example, haptics - the study of how touch affects us psychologically - is now playing a growing role in virtual reality technology. It has also been established that the texture and feel of objects not only influences our own moods but our feelings towards others. Until science is able to inform designers in more detail about the way texture affects us, the way we use it has to be largely instinctive. To me, it sometimes feels as though different textures are linked to past experiences and memories. The softness of velvets, silks and cashmere makes us feel cosseted and safe, while hard surfaces have a more industrial look which feels much less relaxing. Textures should reinforce the intended character and use of a space. A contemporary ‘designer’ kitchen uses sleek, solid surfaces to give a practical, clinical look, which is easily cleaned. The look relies on the materials being new and spotless - as what may initially look fashionable can date quickly. Hard surfaces do not develop that nice patina of age and eventually end up looking worn and used, so they are best suited in kitchens which are not used much. With its rougher textures, a classic country kitchen feels

warmer, more human and more comfortable. Wood is much better at absorbing the wear and tear of everyday life, so the overall look remains largely unaffected by knocks, spills and the passing of time. Of course it’s possible to blend these two looks. The challenge with modernism is to make practical contemporary interiors feel inviting and relaxing. Combining different textures can work well in any room and it can be a great way to add depth and contrast, particularly when working with a relatively limited palette. In much the same way that a single eye-catching painting, sculpture or piece of furniture can set off the rest of the room, unusual textures can also contribute to the overall look of a space. Some great examples include woven leather fabrics by Toyine Sellers, woven leather rugs from Lance and beautiful carpets from Front Rug which are made by combining the softness of wool and silk with the roughness of nettles - which are lovely to walk on in bare feet. Another favourite, Rooks Books, works with stingray, vellum and a wide range of other leathers. One of the most unusual are some 200 year-old Russian reindeer hides salvaged from a shipwreck off Plymouth. Buried and preserved under black mud, the ancient leather is extraordinarily soft and supple. It varies from a rich claret to a light sienna and smells of the sea and a smoky Russian birch forest, which is a reminder that good design should involve all the senses. Textures should be considered throughout the whole design process - they can make a space feel, as well as look, attractive, so they are much more than a finishing touch.

MASTERS OF MODERN DESIGN Clients and designers have a new appreciation for natural materials and textures

pectacular pieces of furniture are always desirable but there is a renewed interest in collecting iconic, sleek, midCentury and more lavish, late 20th-Century modern design. Over the past decade, the vogue and value of 20th- Century design has risen with vintage pieces now reaching record prices. With a growing interest from not only the world of interiors but museums as well, the trend for investing in mid-Century furniture has become comparable to buying works of art. Pieces of exceptional quality we see include the works by great 20th-Century masters such as Paul Evans. The prices for this designer-maker have shot to stratospheric levels in comparison to those achieved a decade ago. A piece of Evans is a marvel of materiel choice, hand finishing and a study in obsessive attention to detail. In the mid-1990s, a handful of British dealers started buying vintage and mid-Century modern. Lucite lamps and consoles worked fantastically, bringing clean lines and modernity to interiors, as fashions changed from the country house look. By the mid noughties - it was a sellout. No one had seen anything like it before. The more we bought the more people acquired the taste for it. The mid and late 20th Century pieces we acquire range from vintage, given a contemporary revamp to fit the needs of modern spaces in our Talisman edition line, to sought after masterpieces whose originality we preserve as a testament to their conceptual genius. For current collectibles there is a demand for pieces in original condition from the star American and European designers of the mid to late 20th Century, such as the works of Paul Evans, Karl Springer, Tommi Parzinger, Aldo Tura and Philip and Kelvin LaVerne. 86

Such craftsmanship and finish can be seen in a LaVerne dining table, with Matisse inspired motif. It is an exceptional example of how a new dimension can be given to metal. The bronze structure is treated with an acid etching technique that gives subtle colour variation and fluidity to the surface, resulting in a patina reminiscent of velvet. There is renewed interest in glamorous materials and jewel colours. By simply adding brass bases to a pair of bespoke chairs you instantly add another dimension. Pattern and texture is also key. Clients and designers have a new appreciation for natural materials and textures and aren’t afraid to mix pattern with pattern. Exotic shell and skin veneered pieces from the likes of Karl Springer and Maitland Smith are gaining a huge following. There is a strong symbiotic relationship between interiors and fashion led by social media and online lifestyle platforms. Artful curating is a look that designers and clients are creating. Clients wish to appear knowledgeable and individual: vintage and 20th Century modern collectibles are perfect for this kind of expression. Clients are more courageous, able to blend periods and styles seamlessly and are creating interiors that are above all, personal and new. However, pieces exceptional in design-quality and execution outlive the idea of trend. A single mid-Century modern piece can bring pleasure for many years. At the upper end of collectible designers such as Paul Evans, justification of investment in a high value single purchase ensures an originality and individuality - a way in which a special piece can become a fascinating focal point in the home. THE HERE AND NOW I love bending old, familiar themes and styles into fresh, new discoveries

ime is the best design partner. There’s a rhythm and movement to homes where the classics of one generation fold in with the next. Even in my native L.A. where stylish sets are always hunting the latest and greatest, the most prevailing trend I see is a yearning to connect to something so truly, and so purely classic. It’s a desire to be part of a larger story, to surround oneself with things that vibrate history which also feel relevant and ever-so-beautifully in sync with rooms today. Blame all that beautiful eye candy on Instagram, Pinterest and our favourite shopping sites. My clients are casting their nets wider than ever before, and digging in deeper to discern what it is they love about every new find. They’re inspired by Scandinavian Modernism, Mid-Century Modernism, Brutalism, Postmodernism and countless more iconic moments outside of -isms. Even the Renaissance is on replay, but for reasons that relate directly to modern living. Finding a new perspective on the old has always been critical to good design, but so too is imparting a sense of history to the new. Subtly done is best. I like to look for avenues of crossover and, usually, a few cross-interests. The reality of designing for a cutting-edge Internet entrepreneur nesting inside a grand, Gilded-age home with exuberant moldings, for example, begged unexpected juxtapositions. Think Bogie plus Bacall or Gwen and Blake: Marriages of opposites that feel richer and more alluring together than apart. Very different from the trend for ‘eclectic’ rooms years ago, the goal now is a room where everything is deemed essential, choiceful and, most

importantly, intimately connected to their owner’s uniquely evolving narrative. After all, what is a well-designed room if not a really good story? Imagine the power of a script written with you alone in mind. No one likes to be left behind on what’s new. That’s why I love opportunities to bring the past forward. I love bending old, familiar themes and styles into fresh, new palpable moments of discovery. Like my hero, the legendary Elsie de Wolfe, I want to deliver comfort while also breaking from expectations in a revealing new light. Surprising clients with unpredictable vignettes is one avenue of approach for me, and product design another: A Chippendale bracket executed minimally in glossy grey lacquer and clear resin, for instance, or a classical urn that contrasts a sleek, modern brass polish with a hammered interior reminiscent of global handcraft. I want these pieces - like my rooms - to have depth and to reveal themselves slowly. I’ve always been a strong proponent that beautiful rooms aren’t my job. Instead, I want the homes I create for my clients to serve them holistically. I titled my book ‘Homefront’ to coin a more active word for the spaces that divert our attention away from modern life’s usual distractions (buzzing phones, texts and status updates, to name a few) long enough to rest and regenerate our senses. Rooms and moments that feel transporting, yet work for the here and now. In other words, a design story so well told and retold that - familiar or not - its details enthrall in every subsequent telling.

TREND OR NOT TO TREND I say true quality design is timeless and classic and essentially un-trendy

t might seem difficult to stay on top of all the trends in the design industry. Every day, it seems, a paint company, fashion designer, or interior designer sends out a ‘must have’ for the next season and we all jump online to find out how we can get the greatest version of this amazing revelation. Well, brace yourself: I’m here to ease your mind and to say stop beating yourself up while trying to keep up with all of the design trends in the world; and that true quality design is, in effect, timeless and classic and essentially un-trendy. I have designed countless pieces of furniture from sofas to lighting to accessories and my goal is never to incorporate the hot new colour, but actually to hearken back to the timeless feeling of interior design that looks just as amazing today as it might have 50 years ago. Don’t believe me? Pick up a shelter magazine from a few decades ago or do an internet search for interior design of a certain year and look at the rooms that appeal to you. I assure you there will be repetitive furniture pieces, colours, or even fabrics that could find their way into your living room today. Now, I do know that there are technological innovations occurring all the time that might change the way we live for the better, and even some decorative elements that might become permanently part of the list of the timeless categories within the design industry, but overall, I suggest to stick with the tried and true finishes, colours, and materials in the largest part of your designs. Sprinkle the trends into your rooms with pillows, drapery, and accessories if you must pull in the ‘latest and greatest.’ These are easily replaced next year when the new list is released. Admittedly, timeless design tends to ebb and flow in and out of popularity just like fashion, however, here are a few components of interior design that I feel stand the test of time. 90

Metallic finishes have undergone many variations from shiny/polished to an antique finish; however, brass, gold, silver, and mirrored finishes are a constant in the design of a space. I particularly enjoy mixing metals in a finished room. Furniture, walls, accessories, etc. will always be available in white or black. These are the colours that everyone can envision in their home. Furthermore, white combined with black is as current in your home now as it was when Dorothy Draper used it in the 1930s. Marble, travertine and limestone, oh my! Natural stone is used on everything from table tops to flooring and you can bank on countless variations in natural stone to always be popular; especially marble. From its first introduction to the market, a stainless steel finish on appliances (and subsequently on lighting, furniture and accessories) has changed the way consumers perceive quality kitchen appliances. Just watch any episode of House Hunters and you’ll hear the gasp of happy home shoppers when they find out a kitchen has stainless steel appliances. It’s a nice, neutral finish that works well in any environment without fighting with other finishes in the room. So there you have it. I hope I haven’t burst too many bubbles and ruined too many shopping experiences, but I do trust you will proceed with caution a little more before incorporating the ‘fabulous new colour of the year!’ Again, this is not to say that a trend could find its path into the land of timelessness, but I for one, am always a bit leery. My advice? Start your room with the colours, materials, and finishes that are as classically oriented as you can find; from there, layer on the trendiest most amazing patterns and colours that you can google search, and then? Add them to your list of donations for the following tax season.

eing my own client was very strange,’ says New York architect, Luca Andrisani. ‘So I really went crazy with the concept - because I was able to.’ That concept, for his loft-like North Miami Beach getaway was ‘60s Italian design, and the craziness comes in via the Vietri tile, designed by Gio Ponti. The tile was everywhere, both in the apartment and on the terrace. ‘I still think of it as a minimalist approach, because I just used one material.’ The rooms pick up the blues of Ponti’s design, in the window treatments, the kitchen cabinetry, and the upholstery throughout. ‘Ponti specifically matched this tile to the water,’ says Andrisani. ‘That’s why it was ideal. When you step in this, it’s the blue of the ocean.’ The ocean features prominently in the apartment: ‘The way the space is structured,’ says Andrisani, who created the open plan, ‘wherever you are, even if you are in the bathroom, you can see water.’ LEFT: The rosewood bed was custom-made by Midcentury LA. A HOUSE FROM THE FUTURE The designer was asked to consider creative ideas that provide wow factor

he property features a Creston home automation system with Lutron HomeWorks lighting and blind controls. With over 25 audio zones, 16 video zones and 350 lighting circuits, this was a major achievement for NV, especially given the logistical issues of delivering a project of this size over 14 hours away. The client was familiar with smart houses as this is their third and was a key part of the brief. Wherever possible, NVI were asked to consider creative ideas that could provide wow factor, as entertaining is one of the primary functions of this home. They rose to the challenge and designed solutions that allowed the techology to be hidden when not in use, yet reveal at the

touch of the button. All from a simple user interface. They were tasked to provide bespoke user interfaces for control of the system. This included integration with the wine cellars, allowing the Creston system to keep track of and show information regarding the wines stored. Plan layouts of each floor provide feedback as to room status - showing if the lights or air conditioning have been left on, and the ability to switch off at the touch of a button. Plus, the much used ‘party mode’ feature. These custom designs set the user interaction of this project apart from the usual ‘cookie cutter’ approach used so often. NVI managed to turn a large, complicated smart home into an easy to use and seamless expereience for the client.

shberg House is a striking new residential property created by leading design studio, Morpheus London. Situated on Cathcart Road in the heart of Chelsea, Central London, the property spans nearly 9,000 sq ft and is arranged over five floors. The home takes its name and inspiration from the famous Ashberg diamond, an amber-coloured cushioncut diamond once included in the Russian Crown Jewels. Tania Johnson From lens to loom: the intricate designs in Tania Johnson’s hand knotted rugs start life with the click of a camera Since 2010, London-based Tania Johnson has been quietly making a name for herself in the interiors world, designing exquisite hand knotted rugs inspired by fleeting moments captured in photography. The way the light creates shadow and reflections, or the beautiful microscopic details found in nature are made permanent through Tania’s clever translation into warp and weft, using Himalayan wool and Chinese silk. The impermanence of nature is a subject that has always fascinated Tania and the interesting images she has gathered in both natural and urban environments over time from the basis of her collections. ‘Reflected Trees is based on a photo of reflection in a lake,’ says Tania. ‘Seconds later, the wind blew and that beautiful image was gone. I find the way patterns form and change very inspiring.’ Having graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in woven textiles,Tania began her career in New York as a designer at Calvin Klein Home, where she worked for five years. After brand’s first rug collection, which launched in 2002. Stints on textile design projects at Vera Wang and Martha Stewart followed but Tania realised her love was designing rugs. ‘Compared with the technical illustrations involved in machine woven fabrics, it was like creating art,’ she says. ‘I’d trained as a weaver and I missed seeing the processes and weaving techniques first hand.’

Tania’s designs are highly detailed, often using close tonal colours, and as such are extremely difficult to weave. Finding the best artisans was of the upmost importance, so she looked to Nepal, working with Good Weave (an organisation that certifies the ethical production of hand knotted rugs) to source the right manufacturer. ‘Having seen the craftsmanship and quality of the weaving from Nepal, I felt it was the best place to realise my designs,’ she says. ‘The Tibetan style of hand knotting was introduced to Nepal by the Tibetan refugees in 1959. ‘It’s a centuries old technique but the weavers there also understand the contemporary western aesthetic.’ From her London studio, Tania creates an intricate weaving graph for her designs and it’s this part of the process that she loves most. ‘The challenge of retaining the subtle transience of a photo whilst creating something permanent, beautiful and technically possible to weave is something I really enjoy,’ she says. ‘It’s amazing to be able to work with artisans from this ancient weaving culture, who not only understand my designs but share my enthusiasm in creating something new.’ Tania Johnson Design www.taniajohnsondesign.com

Candia Lutyens Her aim is to bring adaptations of classic designs to the 21st Century by giving them a modern twist Renowned leading designer and manufacturer of contemporary British home furnishings, Lutyens Furniture & Lighting, has now expanded into a more modern market with its new sister brand: Lutyens Contemporary. This sister branch is founded by Candia Lutyens, granddaughter of Sir Edwin Lutyens, who was widely regarded as one of the greatest British architects of all time. Lighting is a big part of the Contemporary collection, and Candia discusses her personal favourites. ‘One of my preferred lights is the armed pendant, which was originally designed to be made of timber. ight - be it bouncing off feature vintage mirrors, showering down from custom made chandeliers or reflecting into the home off the spectral waters of Lake Tahoe that lays just the other side of its windows was always intended to be a key element to this stunningly thought through landmark dwelling. Los Angeles-based designer Jeff Andrews, working for a family of five from San Francisco who had desired a home that could just as easily be a Winter hideaway as a Summer lake house, says he knew light would be integral to the design of the first ever project he’d worked on at the lake. Internationally celebrated, Andrews creates sophisticated and, perhaps more importantly, livable interiors for both families and an increasing number of US celebrities. Such an approach to interiors has put him in high demand, and his client list is impressive. Those who have called upon Andrews’ design skills include actors; Ryan Seacrest and Michael C. and Kylie Jenner, as well as various members of the Kardashian family. All of these big names are drawn to his work because of the pure livability of the results, he believes. Yet ‘home’ remains a key word for him evidenced in the Lake Tahoe project, with its comfort and fun throughout. In this case, according to the family who live at Lake Tahoe, design rules needed to be broken - or at least bent. Andrews was understandably happy to comply. Nestling in the enclaves of Hurricane Bay, the home’s design is awash with both natural light and specially commissioned and hand chosen artefacts that take it far and above the usual lakeside retreat, easily matching the family’s desire to create a space that was a touch ‘rustic chic’. Andrews says he has in fact always pushed at creative boundaries, all the while respecting traditional design aesthetics. The Lake Tahoe home is testament to this, with detailing throughout that is grounded in the at-first recognisable stylistic signs, but with on closer

inspection actually subvert and even poke fun at any ideas that have become too familiar. Working on an already impressive blank canvas of the work of architect Nicolas J. Kromydas, the six-bedroom timber and glass house provided the ideal starting point for Andrews and his team. They set about finding precisely the right design scheme that would mirror both the perfection of the home’s surroundings and the quirkiness and requests of its owners. From the moment you step into the entrance hall, you’re aware that light - and lighting - is key. The molded glass chandelier, decked with bronze, was made by Michael McEwen, and a further two hang in the double height great room just beyond. If you’re lucky enough to have a view of Lake Tahoe, it figures you need something special in the way of seating from which to truly appreciate it. With this in mind, Andrews sourced two expansive Mimi London sofas, covered in Edelman Leather and Designers Guild fabric. In front of these, as sculptural as they are Bridge for Design Spring 2017 165

functional, sit a pair of Paul Evans tables. There is also ample space to appreciate the view from a pair of 1960s’ Guillerme and Chambron Grand Repos chairs, which were found through Melissa Edelman Antiquaire and covered in stylish grey fabrics from Raoul Textiles. Completing the seating in the room is a captain’s chair with a sumptuous throw, designed by Brazilian modernist furniture maker and entrepreneur, Jean Gillon. greys and ragged edges is a rug designed especially by Andrews. Acting as a nod to the shoreline just metres from it, it captures the spirit of the lake. Three large scale mirrors towards the ceiling reflect the ‘art’ of the room’s design back down, bowing slightly for theatrical effect. Leaving the great room, the dining room pans off to one side, with its dining table - actually hewn from part of a bridge (from Big Daddy’s Antiques in Los Angeles) - catching the eye first. Rudin’s famed 716 dining chairs surround it, while at each end, Andrews has placed Daley wing chairs sourced from Lucca Antiques, also in LA. He says he is continually inspired by his Southern California upbringing, and his team regularly create both the interior and the exterior spaces with assistance of artefacts from local suppliers. Perhaps most strikingly, Andrews re-purposed French streetlights to hang over the table here. Freed from the 168 Bridge for Design Spring 2017

poles that once bound them to Parisian streets, these take on a new, almost otherworldly life in the dining room, adding a little humour and bending the rules once more. Andrews and his team visited the Marchés aux Puces markets of Paris, scouring the stalls there for vintage and industrial pieces like this, waiting for the perfect setting for them to be re-imagined in. Within this dining room, the streetlights fit the bill perfectly. Also re-purposed, the kitchen offers a home to a

reclaimed barn door which Andrews had sourced, and this allowed the designer to bring continuity to the whole house as a result. So the rugged and worn wood a request of the family - was used not only for the island in the kitchen but also in the games room upstairs. Texture was important, Andrews believes. Be it the soft lilt of the wave-like feel in the great room, the rough stone of the building’s architecture or in the lush fabrics strung around the seats in a carefree way, at every turn you’re aware this house is a tactile one - and in all seasons, harking back to the family’s initial request. The games room also benefits from throw pillows covered in Katie Leede fabrics from Holland & Sherry, along with stools from the Thomas Hayes Gallery on 170 Bridge for Design Spring 2017

Santa Monica Boulevard. The five cow skulls hung on the stone wall act as both a cheeky homage to perhaps stereotypical interior design, but also as a nod to the five members of the home’s young family. The feeling of continuous flow was vital for Andrews, he says. He wanted to create a unified feeling throughout the home. In addition to his considered work mirroring the textures from the kitchen in the games room, there is a further pendant streetlight up in one of the bathrooms. The master bedroom was designed to feel like a further extension of the house too. Of course, there is the rock wall behind the bed, echoing the statement architecture, but there is also a Rêverie chandelier by French designer Jean de Merry, further wood in the form of the desk this

time, another custom designed rug and mirrors from Mexican design team, Casamidy. Again, a streetlamp features. Everything ties up beautifully. But ultimately it is the light - and illusion of light - whether inside of the home or out, that marks this lakeside retreat as something special. At night, these qualities are boosted further still, especially when viewed from the water, Andrews believes. Stepping outside to the water’s edge, looking back at the house, lights blazing in the dusk, it’s clear that this is a home which achieved all of its goals - and brilliantly. 172 Bridge for Design Spring 2017

tepping through the colourful rooms of Michaela Goldschmied’s 5,382 sq. ft country house in Asolo, you’re struck by how smoothly evolved it seems, from the warren like areas for reading or relaxing, to its outer space, which feels as though it is in a state of permanent hideaway with well established flowers and plants draped around the entire property. In fact, it becomes clear that Goldschmied’s vision was similar in scope, with the current design of the home achieved only gradually. Important pieces have been picked over the years, and contrasts in its bold design stem not from notions of what the home should look like, but as a result of a busy family life. That said, all those colours were intentional. ‘I prefer vibrant and bright colours,’ Goldschmied says. Finding a definition for her home is tricky. ‘A term like ‘country chic’ isn’t entirely appropriate as it sounds planned and doesn’t necessarily encompass all the different styles and influences of the house. It’s most definitely a country house, so I’d say it’s a rustic, more welcoming version of the madness of Alice’s journey in the rabbit hole.’

For furniture, the bold, idiosyncratic décor of items like the stone elephants that greet you at the entrance to the lounge, and the mounted deer heads by the wood burner beyond, could only have come from a life of collecting. ‘The furniture came little by little, sometimes from different trips, or was inherited from family members. Nothing was planned - it’s almost as if the interiors are pieces of the puzzle which I’m perpetually putting together and re-assembling.’ A sense of the outside is strongest in the room that is dominated by the fireplace. Potted plants, wickerwork, stone planters and a floral wallpaper echoed in a lampshade give the feel of the garden outside. Then, when stepping outside, the feel is one of time passed, the aged blue wooden beams hinting at the bold colours inside, and 178 Bridge for Design Spring 2017

the plants and vines growing on every surface. ‘I love all plants! There are various fruit trees which are a delight, but I’d have to say that some of my favourites are the crawling plants, which are all over the frontal facade. What I love is the slightly forgotten and wild look they bring,’ says Goldschmied. Yet despite the talk of things just evolving, Michaela Goldschmied’s home has in fact achieved its goal, she believes, and at the same time provides an insight into her work. ‘My vision for this - and any house I decorate is to mirror the personality of the owner and create a space which is tailor made for them and their comforts. I know my house is quite bold for most people, but it’s an extension of my personality - bold, colourful, vibrant, and welcoming.’

ecorator, Gwynn Griffith, has created her own rich, personal refuge in a late-19th-Century brick edifice that withstands the Texas heat in San Antonio. Inside, the rooms give new meaning to the word ‘collected’. With great passion, Griffith has juxtaposed antique cabinets, a Pop Art ‘hand’ chair, a French chaise longue, African stools, and Mexican plaster lions - all within walls that pulsate with colour. brown in the grand living room, where dozens of mercury gazing balls dangle from the ceiling, catching glimmers of the Texas light that cascades through windows nearly 13 feet high. The scale of the former industrial building means that there’s plenty of wall and floor space for Griffith’s collections of paintings, drawings, photographs, and sculptures. Some are by Griffith herself. The realisation of this art-filled oasis didn’t happen without vision and pluck. Griffith, who has run a onewoman design firm for nearly 30 years, first moved into the building as a tenant in 1994, when the metal shop on the ground floor was fully operational. ‘There was still iron-working going on,’ she says. ‘Bang, bang, bang!’ 182 Bridge for Design Spring 2017

It turned out that Griffith wasn’t the only occupant on her third-floor rental space. ‘There were bats and pigeons. I used to hunt squab up there with a pellet gun. It was a very primitive situation.’ She made the best of it by raising walls, turning the open loft into a cosy haven. Five years later, when a chance to buy the entire building presented itself, Griffith took the leap. Out went the first floor’s metalworking equipment and drill presses; up went more walls and old French windows were modified to fit the existing openings. Griffith left intact at least one remnant of the building’s industrial history: the scarred pine flooring, which has been infused with character by scorch marks from a forge’s flying sparks and coals. Ultimately, she moved downstairs,

transforming the raw space into a combination residence and design office. The relocation also offered easy access to the property’s remarkably lush gardens, where she grows spinach, jalapeños, tomatoes, and basil. As Griffith applied colour and brought in art and antiques, the ground floor came alive. The rich and layered palette sprung ‘from out of my head,’ she says. The entry hall glows emerald-green. The kitchen walls blend lemon and lime. The effect everywhere is theatrical - a fitting backdrop for her quirky, eclectic assemblages, hunted and gathered in shops, on trips, and online. In the master bedroom, a mural of a Persian landscape by Mannino fills the walls, with trees stretching to the ceiling. In a cabinet room she calls her ‘chamber of curiosities,’ a sculpture by Giesey takes pride of place. 184 Bridge for Design Spring 2017

It’s a clay figure of a supine chicken, augmented with taxidermy head and feet - ‘a Mother’s Day present,’ says Griffith, laughing. Lately the decorator has found herself being pulled in new aesthetic directions. ‘All the rooms I’ve fiddled with recently I’ve changed to white,’ she says. She is drawn to modernist paintings of the 1930s and ‘40s and to sleek contemporary light fixtures. There are hints of this unusual new direction at her own home: to wit, a pair of chairs by Vignelli Associates, circa 1985, which look like handkerchiefs caught in free fall. They pull up to a well-weathered, white-marble table in the kitchen. ‘I’m a restless spirit,’ confesses Griffith. ‘I love change. I’ve been known to move the bed to the middle of the living room if the mood strikes.’

Each room has its own character, boasting rich textures and polished raw materials. With stained oak woods, bespoke brass screens, modern cladding and lacquered paneling, it feels homogeneous. It is a space with a minimalistic and modern ambience, with both masculine and feminine finishes. The furnishing is an eclectic mix of curated pieces and personal artworks of the owner. ‘We wanted to create an intimate, warm interior common in high-end boutiques,’ says ARRCC 188 Bridge for Design Spring 2017

partner and project leader, Mark Rielly. ‘Masculine colours and darker woods provide clues to the African rhythms, so we took a relaxed approach to curves, adding draped leather sofas and details like the vintage endocrine coffee table. ‘A highlight is the custom suspended brass screening with triangular cut-outs inspired by African beading, separating the lobby from living areas,” adds Rielly. artworks, which anchored the space, giving a focal point. In the main bedroom, faceted marble ledges sit alongside geometric lights, with trimmings of distressed leathers, plush suedes and soft cream drapes creating a cohesive fluidity and warmth. In the kitchen, streamlined wood and stone fit the style. In the surrounding spaces, dark wood wraps onto the walls contrasted with Venetian plastering. the TV lounge, a carbon fibre dining table, OKHA vases by renowned glass blower David Reade, and jeweled chain lights. A sensuous timber sculpture curves snake-like to soften crisp edges. Outside, the landscaped roof terrace creates refuge from Barcelona’s heat. Custom umbrellas inspired by Passeig de Gracia’s trees create privacy. A double volume gardened wall reflects in the bar’s smoked mirrors, conjuring further space. ‘What may appear trouble-free came with great

complexity,’ says ARRCC director Jon Case. ‘We had to adhere the original plan, including a historical hexagon-shaped central courtyard. So we reflected elements of this throughout the apartment.’ It’s easy to understand why the West African apartment owner returns to the Cape-Town based ARRCC team. ocated in Far Hills, New Jersey, approximately 45 minutes from Manhattan is this elegant family home nestled in five acres of immaculately manicured lawns and gardens. Standing at approximately 7,500 sq. ft, this home which was built in the 1990’s had an exterior that oozed classic French character and details, but its interior had been outfitted with American colonial details that did not sit comfortably with the new owners. The clients required a cosmetic renovation that sought to align the interior architecture with the exterior, and at the same time make the home practical and stylish for both family and social entertaining activities. That brief resulted in the design and fitting of a new kitchen, bathrooms, decorative molding and trim, as well as complete interiors. Another challenge was to showcase the family’s beautiful art collection - which includes pieces from Picasso, Twombly, Max, Miro and others - and give it a space of its own. some awkward builder elements such as angled walls and basic molding which didn’t sit comfortably with the level of sophistication that was aimed for. Keeping the details relevant to both the architecture and the level of elegance required was key to getting the finished look to be perfect. The furnishings are all bespoke and designed to reflect an international sophistication and design sensibility. ‘We employed cool tonal colours throughout the home to unify the space and highlight the millwork details,’ explains Matthew Frederick, founder of M. Frederick Design. The foyer and dining room paneling was existing and was complemented by additional paneling in the family room and kitchen areas. The main staircase’s proportions were initially questioned but created a dramatic focal point by employing gloss lacquer in the handrails and stairs and a clean, fresh wide sisal runner that helps define the foyer space and adds a relevance to daily living. The foyer also features a beautiful Browne & Moore set of demi-lunes. The family room was initially an awkward double height space that was transformed by adding millwork and bespoke lighting to change the proportion of the room. A grand double height fireplace surround could have dominated the room, but instead with the correct pieces, it has been turned into a subtle, but elegant focal point within the space. ‘The cocktail table is a replica of a vintage piece we saw on our travels and it anchors the various seating areas in the room. The lighting - a Jerome Park two-tier chandelier - had to be custom made because we couldn’t find lighting of the scale and sophistication we needed from any standard offering,’ says Matthew. It sits over Browne & Moore upholstery throughout the room, and the area rug is called Merida, whilst the oversized, classic table lighting throughout the room is supplied by Visual Comfort. The dining room chandelier is the first example of its 198 Bridge for Design Spring 2017

kind in the United Stated from Saint Louis Crystal and features hand blown clear and graphite details. The kitchen is a completely custom configuration of cabinetry from the Browne & Moore Bespoke kitchen collection. It features 5cm statuary counters, custom coloured Blue Star range, custom lighting from our collection, and a powder vanity coloured to complement the range. ‘We completely removed the previous kitchen space and removed several walls to configure the new space so that it achieved the desired flow and visual access to the rear patio and pool area. For the pool, we specified a dark bluestone and a grey-tinged pool to add depth and drama to the area,’ Matthew says. The clients are very happy with the results. They love the flow of the space and the visual uniformity. They entertain often and have been thrilled with the feedback from friends and colleagues.
