As designer Larry Laslo said in the Spring issue of Bridge for Design, “I sometimes have to give a leaf a pinch to test its provenance.” NDI has been creating these lifelike made-to-order designs in its own workshops for over 50 years.

WHAT INSPIRES ME Homes and public buildings built in the 17th and 18th centuries are more beautiful than anything being created today

A

mong the architects and interior designers who have inspired me most are Sir John Vanburgh, Nicholas Hawksmoor, Charles Cameron, Giacomo Quarenghi and Sir John Soane. More recently, I would add Edwin Lutyens, Norman Foster and a small number of interior designers as well as Thomas Heatherwick, who is brilliantly inventive and clever. The finest homes and public buildings built in the 17th and 18th centuries are far more beautiful than anything being created today but that is largely because our value systems have changed. Most people, including those with money, now tend to have a relatively short-term perspective on projects and are more likely to be motivated by gadgets, communication, fashion and travel, than culture and the arts which, sadly, are often seen as rather elitist. So while Norman Foster is on my list of people who inspire me, that is more to do with his talent at identifying and solving the challenges involved with a project. Vanburgh’s Baroque houses, Hawksmoor’s unmistakeably bold, masculine and confident designs and Cameron’s opulent, daring and imaginative interiors created for Catherine The Great all move me much more than any contemporary design. The same is true of the way in which Quarenghi took Russian Classicism to a new level and Soane’s extraordinary understanding of space and light. Lutyens’ reinvention of Classicism and his knack for making a building look as though it has always been there is also inspirational. In my view, nobody working today has capped the elegance achieved by Soane or Vanburgh two or three hundred years ago. Most contemporary architects no longer care about creating beautiful buildings – they want to make their mark and shock people. But how long does that shock last for and does anyone want to live with it for any length of time? It takes far more skill to create a space which is appreciated every day, year after year. I quite often hear from people who are disgruntled with their architect because they can’t get them to listen to what they actually want. When Fayland House, designed by David Chipperfield Architects, beat off global competition to win The Architectural Review’s House Awards 2015, the judges explained their decision by using words such as ‘uncomfortable’ and ‘subversive’ but are those qualities which a client really wants? For me, comfort and elegance sound far more appealing. One of one the buildings which most inspires me is Ven House, which I was lucky enough to buy from Jasper Conran last year. It is a Grade I manor house in Somerset which was completed at the end of the 17th century and extended in the 1720s and then altered again by Thomas Cubitt and Decimus Burton in 1835-36. The house embodies everything I strive to achieve in architecture and interior design. For

62

me, the success of its design makes the house feel like a celebration of life. Jasper did a wonderful job with the house and in many ways it is the first project I have ever worked on where I don’t really want to change a thing. I am gently bringing the house into the twenty-first century by making the house a little more liveable in and also by introducing some contemporary art amongst the old masters. The restrictions on what I cannot do don’t bother me at all as I love what is already there. I feel like the luckiest man in the world when I arrive at Ven for the weekend. Interior designers are generally much more in tune with the way people live their lives than architects, but that doesn’t mean I find many of them particularly inspiring. I certainly rated David Hicks and Nancy Lancaster and another designer who will always inspire me is Bunny Roger. It is vital for creative people to have the courage of their own convictions and Bunny never cared what anyone else thought. He was extraordinarily brave. One of the few people who really fires my imagination today is Thomas Heatherwick. I recently went to see his design for the Garden Bridge, which will link the South Bank with the Embankment by the top of Temple tube. It is astonishing. Heatherwick’s breadth of skills is reminiscent of some of the greatest early Georgian architects – several of whom were also accomplished dramatists and artists. Heatherwick is a maverick but he also pays attention to tradition – and that makes him very different to most other architects and designers today. METALLICS IN INTERIORS Metals make a statement and add glamour and often warmth to contemporary designs

N

ot too long ago, one would think of metals in the home with regards to the industrial chic trend with exposed beams and pipes, shiny chrome taps in the bathroom and perhaps some stainless steel appliances in the kitchen. These days, however, metal has crept into interiors in a big way and the popularity for this trend does not seem to be waning. Chrome was the first metallic tone to become the material of choice for table lamps, coffee tables, shelving units and unique home accessories - copper, brass, gold and silver have steadily followed. In 2015, it was all about copper - everything from KitchenAid mixers to free-standing baths were given a copper makeover. The year culminated with Dulux announcing that its paint colour of the year for 2015 was called Copper Blush. Our love for metallics will never fade and 2016 is the year of tones of brass and gold. A key trend we are seeing this year is the layering of metallics - mixing soft warm tones such as rose gold and bronze, gold and silver is a popular way to use metallic tones in the home with fabrics and furniture companies are offering a wide range of designs and finishes. Metals make a statement and add glamour and often warmth to contemporary designs. A noticeable trend which is taking over the high street is cutlery and tableware in gold tones; it is also seen in fashion with more high street brands offering metallic-look clothing such as shimmering skirts and shiny jackets. Consumers were being drawn to eye-catching, statement pieces for even the smallest of accessories and everyday essentials. Electronics brand, Apple are still riding on a wave of increasing success after combining their iconic white design with rose gold, silver and gold - by simply following a popular lifestyle trend. 64

Bridge for Design Summer 2016

There is a real element of luxury when it comes to metallics, whilst some consumers choose to add small touches here and there, there are many who choose big pieces - chandeliers covered in gold-leaf or bespoke pendant lighting made from brass and chrome in unique and organic shapes. This trend is not just seen in accessories and lighting - flooring companies are offering metallic tones in their ranges. Amtico offers vinyl flooring in a range of gentle shimmers, brighter glints and metal-like textures which will add a touch of soft glamour. Metallics work particularly well in a smaller room - as an accent colour within the interiors scheme. The reflective properties help bounce light around the room creating an impact. Smart gold wall lights and subtle metallic cushions in a tiny urban living room will add a subtle shine to the room without dominating. Similarly using just one stunning piece will create a huge impact in a room. The beauty of metallic products is that they work well with every colour and have been used to decorate living spaces for hundreds of years - only now are they more versatile and more fashionable. The concept of using metals in interiors is certainly not a new concept, medieval nobility used wrought iron in their homes. During the course of the 20th century, trends have changed. There was a real love of chrome and mirrors in homes in the 20s and the 60s and 70s saw the renaissance of Brutalist metalwork coming back into fashion. The interiors world smartened up the 80s and 90s with gold and brass being very much in Vogue. Metallics in interiors today are the norm and attainable with any budget. It is a trend which is here to stay due to its ability to be integrated into any design scheme and the wide variety of products now offered by companies worldwide.

PERSONAL PREFERENCE I want a room to be as inviting and as comfortable as it is visually stimulating to the eye says Anthony Barrata Anthony Baratta T: 001 212 966 8892 www.anthonybaratta.com

I

t’s always been important to create spaces for my clients that reflect their personal style. I delight in finding the right colours that resonate with my client and then saturating them to create environments that bring joy. I do not believe that it is enough to just add a pop of colour to an otherwise neutral room. To this end, I believe that colour should be expressive and bright. I love mixing saturated colour with dynamic fabrics that have large scale geometric patterns along with floral prints and custom made rugs. In creating designs for my clients I have always looked for antique accessories and expressive art that could include antique signs, vintage weather vanes or handsome horses. During my travels, I shop for special pieces for my current and future clients - it has been a joy to discover wonderful items that I know will perfectly enhance a client’s home. In addition, I have always enjoyed creating custom fabrics along with upholstered and wood furniture so that my clients have a one-of-a-kind home that truly reflects their personality. Not that there are not endless furniture and fabric choices to choose from, it has always been vitally important to me to create distinctive comfortable upholstery dressed in an expressive fabric whether it is a textural matelassÊ, an oversized hounds tooth or a hand blocked batik. If this meant creating a custom sofa or other furniture item, I was excited to design and have it built. The same is true about fabrics and rugs. I love being able to create a very personal interior for my client because I know this is why they chose a designer in the first place. Fortunately they trusted me to create it for them. I have always been drawn to upholstery designs that are shapely and detailed. I have focused on sofas that range from relaxed, casual camelbacks to curved-front crescents and loose-cushion shelter frames, while chairs feature rounded backs and exaggerated wings that engage the eye from every angle. When upholstered in just the right fabric these upholstered items become art. My clients have always responded with my mixing of materials - this could include accents of white paint and white leather wrapped doors and drawers for a modern cottage look. I have several distinctive styles that I love to work in including rustic lodge and 60s styled mod groovy, but the look that I am best known for is an East Coast nautical-chic. There are risks involved with using saturated colour along with large scaled prints and geometric patterns. One has to understand the relationship between the selected colours so that they do not compete or overwhelm each other. The same is true with large scale prints and geometric patterns. There is a balance to achieve so that they balance each other. The layering of art and accessories must continue this balance so that there is harmony in the end. With these design elements of explosive, saturated colour, expressive accessories and art, custom fabrics and furniture, the most important element is comfort. I want the room to be a reflection of who they are because it is their home but I also want the room to be as inviting and comfortable as it is visually stimulating to the eye.

TAKE THE TREND TEST If something is truly classic, its popularity will resurface time and time again

A

s we toured the Sutton Place, a New York City apartment my client recently purchased from an estate sale, my very young associate sniffed, “this looks so dated.” I agreed with her, but I remembered that mitered mylar wallpapers were all the rage, along with hugely graphic black and white porcelain floors, not so long ago. I suspect my 21st century, stylish associate was unaware of the pervasive influence of Angelo Donghia as far back as the 1960s. “What were they thinking?” she said as her eyes caught the over-scaled, taupe, faux-bamboo bookcase. “And this ditsy little flowered print in the kitchen, can you believe it?” she gaped - a favourite of Sister Parish Designs. Her youthful incredulity at these iconic examples of the past only reminded me how rapidly the fashion for interior design changes, just as the fashion in clothing mutates by the day. So we spoke of these various influences as we walked through the apartment’s time warp. We talked of the influence of Angelo Donghia and how his broad-strokes glamour appealed to the 70s bold, graphic sensibility. We spoke of Baldwin’s love of chinoiserie and how that bit of exoticism appealed to a generation cleaning off the cobwebs of staid, formal rooms. And we talked about Sister Parish’s country house kinship, where chintzy fabrics, quilts and cotton plaids de-stuffed a generation yearning for pretty. As we walked out of the apartment, we reminisced about this year’s trends and influences on design. What seems so current, trendy, chic, hip and irresistibly fashionable and appealing now that might render a home or apartment dated in the future? The first word out of both our mouths was “grey!” It is not simply the movie and its many shades; this colour has infiltrated everything from fabrics to finishes to stone selections. I recently wandered through a fabulous stone yard, and a third of the stone imports were some variation on the theme of grey. While other manufacturers seem to be reinventing the wheel, there are some so innovative, who capture the imagination of the design world so intensely, they raise up the whole genre. Phillip Jeffries’ creative take on

68

Bridge for Design Summer 2016

grasscloth, for instance, has spawned a burgeoning industry. So hot is the demand for this wallcovering, and so intense is the love of this texture, that designers can’t hold at only hanging it on their walls. Now, they are also wrapping chests of drawers, bedside tables, and consoles with grasscloth. 2016 will be noted for its embrace of Southeast Asian and Indian embroideries so complex, so elaborate and so affordable that one would think we had returned to the Gilded Age. Notable has been the revival of Chinese hand-painted murals lining the walls of entryways, dining rooms and parlors. Their elegant figures of brides, bamboo, Chinese landscapes and tea houses have even made their way back to the forefront of the fabric world, printed on curtain-worthy cottons - a highly elegant and romantic alternative to the world of sharper geometrics. If you are in the market for a standing tub, they have never been more available than now. It is not simply the exquisite designs created by English, French and Italian companies but American companies, such as American Standard and Kohler, are creating gorgeous pieces as well. Some trends find a quick denouement. The carpet industry has gone gaga for splatter-art rugs with massive, messy, spotted repeats that may mimic, but certainly won’t endure compared to the book-matched marble masterpieces. So the upshot of my conversation with my associate was a teaching moment for both of us. We, as designers and interior aficionados, have an upto-date vision that we always try to keep current. If something is truly classic, its popularity will resurface time and time again. However, with social media making things more visible and attainable, these newer trends tend to come in and out of fashion more rapidly than ever, making it almost impossible to get ahead of the curve. I am fairly certain that the designer who created the apartment we are now gutting considered his/her work timeless. And we also consider our work timeless, though I suppose it’s only until the next gut job occurs. Perhaps we should simply do the best work we can to enjoy and celebrate the moment in time.

n the Veneto region of Italy, Ruggero Bosco, a landscape gardener, and his partner Yoshiko have created a surprising garden decorated with an exemplary nursery where rare collections stand alongside wild grasses and old rose bushes. Ruggero has travelled around the world for many years, particularly to countries rich in flora either by virtue of their exuberance or their particularity. In London, whilst he was working at Kew Gardens, he met Yoshiko, and together they left for Japan. This country, which he explored not only through their Zen gardens

but equally by its Oriental culture, led them to put down roots there. The twists and turns of their journey now completed, they have finally settled in Ruggero’s grandfather’s estate in Santa Marizza, near Udine. The property was neglected and the house was in desperate need of repair. Today, it is hard to imagine the state it was in at the time, given how harmonious and coherent the surroundings are now. The old house, despite having had important restoration works, remains faithful to its farming structure. The porch has not been altered,

the patio annexed to the house is envisioned as a haven of coolness during Summer and harbours several fragile plants during cold weather. The old barn is spruced up with ferns which enhance the designer’s furniture and the backdrop of the original wall, which has simply been whitewashed. At the entrance to the garden, as a welcome, a large square of grass opens out before your eyes. Very quickly, your gaze wanders towards the lengthy view, a footpath unfolds underneath trees, and it is only by strolling through it that we discover a series of garden rooms on either side, running along the entirety of the path. The symmetrical structure of the layout can only just be 94

distinguished; the different varieties of shrubs are planted either straight into the earth or in tubs. In their wild exuberance, we can make out the handiwork of Ruggero through the gentle and carefully studied pruning. Moreover, when he amuses himself by describing his choices and his opinions about the garden, he confesses with a mischievous smile; ‘I love wild.’ Ruggero and Yoshiko work to rehabilitate wildlife and argue that there is no such thing as a weed. They hope to open visitors’ eyes and make them appreciate nature itself. It is for this reason that they are working to expand their collection of ivy, ferns, hostas and hellbores. Ruggero maintains

that plants have differing development times according to which plants they are placed next to. This is why mint is planted alongside roses in full bloom, box (Buxus) harmonises with myrtle (Myrtus), whilst lavender prefers the presence of wormwood. It is truly delightful to hear him talk about his work and run through a series of entirely satisfactory results. For several years, roses have taken over the gazebos, pergolas, tree trunks and fruit trees also hold an important place. Always attracted to new experiments, the couple tell us that they are in the process of creating a bamboo garden. Ruggero has created the most beautiful gardens in Veneto and, even further away, Yoshiko takes care of the sowing and taking cuttings in their romantic nursery garden. Their passion for nature drives them now and forever. 98

his country estate in the north of Ibiza comprises of a 3-bedroom house, surrounded by two hectares of lush gardens in which two additional houses provide a further two bedrooms and en-suites. Although the main building and inherited design was very handsome, the internal design had been sadly neglected, so the clients instructed TG Studio to makeover the interior as well as re-designing the terraces and pool house. Planning restrictions forbid the extension of the building so work had to be done within the confines of the existing building.

To make the most of the stunning grounds and lush environment beyond, the brief was to provide a party space and chill out area incorporating the pool house and terraces. An outdoor dining area is covered by a roof supported on huge Balinese columns, which perfectly frame the scenery from the range of contemporary furniture filling the terrace, inviting guests to sit down and enjoy the view. The pool house was extended using galvanised wood and re-organised to house a large bar with two built in fridges, two dishwashers, a music system, a grill and a woodfire pizza oven. On the inside, the main room features 4-metre high ceilings and large sliding glass doors so that in Summer the living room doubles up with the outside terrace. In one corner an alcove, originally a bread oven, has been uncovered and opened up into the main living space to provide a very large chill out snug. A circular roof light and four different shaped windows with yellow tinted glass allow the light to flood in and make a feature of the unusual space. A large selection of cushions in contrasting prints and colours from Ferm Living and Tasca invite guests to sit and relax. Whilst simultaneously working on an interiors project in Amsterdam, Sera discovered some beautiful antique panels, which she had shipped over. ‘There was a delicacy in the craftsmanship and they had such charm and character, I immediately had a framework to work within,’ she says. Teamed with bare brick walls, reclaimed floorboards and black painted ceilings, they exude the wonderful faded grandeur that Sera wanted to evoke. ‘The dark ceiling grounds the space,’ she says. ‘And the

Firelight gives a romantic feel and I sprinkle frankincense and rose oils on the coals, so the apartment smells like a beautiful old Venetian church.’ Sumptuous furnishings from the new Sera of London, Les Folies collection and unusual antique pieces fill the space. These are beautifully surrounded by paintings inherited from Sera’s art dealer father, exotic bric a brac and a profusion of plants and greenery. ‘Plants bring the space to life and create dramatic shadows on the ceilings at night,’ she says. They give a feel of my home being in a more exotic location.’ 126 Bridge for Design Summer 2016

NANTUCKET BEACH HOUSE A modern but classic beach house on the south coast of Nantucket island delights with equal parts sun, surf and serenity WORDS JENNIFER SPERRY | PHOTOGRAPHS NAT REA 128 Bridge for Design Summer 2016

O

ver 25 years ago, the client visited Nantucket for the first time at her husband’s urging, and ever since the pair has envisioned their own beachfront Summer home. Vacation-hopping around Nantucket’s hotels and cottages for years, the Boston-based couple ultimately fell in love with Surfside on the island’s South coast. It is a beach lover’s paradise. In 2001, the family found just the right piece of Surfside for sale. A quick walk down the property’s front lawn leads directly to Surfside Beach. ‘It’s why we love this location,’ explains the wife.

Assembling a team of Nantucket-based design firms, including BPC Architecture, Cross Rip Development, and Donna Elle Interior Design, they began realising their dream of a casual vacation retreat with a sophisticated edge. They decided to rebuild the property’s existing home - a simple Cape, it lacked a compelling history and its orientation greatly limited water views. ‘They wanted their new home to feel like the setting of an old story from long ago,’ says Donna Elle. ‘They wanted it to feel like it had been preserved.’ ‘We broke up the home into three masses - the main entry and bedroom wing; living room; and kitchen, dining room, and master suite - to lessen its impact on

the lot and to take advantage of light and views,’ says Joe Paul of BPC Architecture. The resulting L-shaped footprint mimics the feel of one older, original structure added on to over time. Paul decided that, in his design, the living room would be the new home’s oldest part. Exposed studs and roughhewn oak rafters, all hand-rubbed with pigment stain to make them look timeworn, contribute to the room’s aged appearance. Horizontal wood panelling, painted in Benjamin Moore Harbor Haze, evokes the look of classic beach cottages found along Surfside. The goal for the interior overall was ‘something beachy and comfortable that is at the same time contemporary and upscale,’ describes the wife. Both Paul and Elle agreed on the term ‘beach chic’ to summarise this vision. Elle settled on a palette of whites, soft blues, and greys, pulling colors from the surrounding landscape. Artistic furnishings fulfill the owners’ quest for chic tempered by a lived-in spirit. ‘Any finish or fabric had to pass a litmus test, in my eyes, which was: will it hold up to bathing suits and sandy feet just as well as to elegant

cocktail parties?’ summarises Elle. Statement pieces in the living room include a coffee table by Florida artist James Duncan. Its base of found driftwood is topped by extra thick beveled glass, custom crafted to Elle’s dimensions. Twin chandeliers, comprised of copper frames entwined with wooden beads, were made from Belgian wine barrels and sourced from BoBo Intriguing Objects in Atlanta, Georgia. In the more formal dining area, Elle mixed contemporary Philippe Starck Lucite chairs and upholstered armchairs over a luxurious wool-and-silk area rug in a soumak weave from Stark Carpet. A room with unique appeal, dubbed the social bar by Paul, separates the kitchen and dining room. Created in response to the owners’ desire for an entertaining focal point, the space is a more creative host than the kitchen island. Using a boat hull as inspiration, the architect drew an oval-shaped bar, complete with footrails, long enough to accommodate six bar stools. Its contemporary metalclad base purposefully contrasts the home’s prevalent use of wood. Elle grouped Belgian wine jugs, retrofitted

The owners love entertaining, and in turn, ‘most of our guests don’t want to leave,’ laughs the wife. Visitors have a choice between a guest suite on the first floor or a guesthouse above the garage. Similarly, the couple’s two grown children have their own bedrooms on the second level, apart from the main living areas. Above the screened-in porch, facing the ocean, is the secluded master suite, which benefits from plenty of southern light as well as a private balcony. ‘There’s nothing like falling asleep to the sound of waves at night,’ admit the owners.

he home of Pascale and Olivier Gisclard is a tribute to the palatial interiors of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It took just one brief viewing of the property for the couple to fall in love with this home and begin the process for an immediate purchase. Situated only an hour from Paris and just outside the medieval town of Sezanne, this early eighteenth century house has an illustrious past having once belonged to the Marquise de Beauharnais, the sister of Josephine, before her marriage to Napoleon. 140 Bridge for Design Summer 2016

Upon purchase, the couple set to studying the quirks of the house and the scant evidence left behind, to imagine how the interiors once were in order to accurately recapture the atmosphere of the eighteenth century. Multiple changes have gradually been made to the interior, and as very creative antiquarians, the couple have been able to play with everything from the walls and woodwork, to the floors and paint choices. Wooden, and even concrete floors, have an authentic distressed look, and tromp l’oeil panelling and decadent chandeliers encapsulate the grandeur of the period.

Preferring to use old materials and items over new, such as repurposing old castle doors for the salon-library, they have achieved their desired classic palace environment with such success that Olivier takes great pride in visitors commenting that it’s as if nothing has changed since the eighteenth century. Keeping the palette essentially neutral, except for a traditional turquoise blue that features throughout the property, has allowed all the many recovered items and pieces sourced from second-hand dealers to become the theatre of the house. Having met whilst working as a steward and stewardess for Air France back in 1995, Pascale and Olivier have a joint history and passion for travelling and discovering new cultures, places and antiques. Their interest in the European culture and heritage has led them to grow an extensive collection of antiques sourced from all over the world. Interest from friends to see their collection and even purchase some of their treasures, led to the decision by the couple to turn their entire home into an antiques shop called Le Grillon Voyageur. This means there is a constant product turnover as things are bought and replaced, meaning the interiors are constantly changing which gives the property an ever-evolving development. 144 Bridge for Design Summer 2016

rchid Apartment V is a new residence designed by international design and development firm, Finchatton. Completed in November 2015, the apartment has a prime position within the super-yacht marina at Albany, the luxury resort community on Providence Island in The Bahamas which is jointly owned by Joe Lewis’ Tavistock Group, Tiger Woods and Ernie Els. The resort includes spacious beachfront villas, multiple fine dining restaurants, a fitness centre designed for professional athletes, a championship golf course and equestrian centre. The Orchid building, which has nine private apartments, was designed by award winning New York architects Morris Adjmi, and features a laser cut stainless steel arched facade in an abstracted orchid pattern which recalls the wrought iron balconies of the French Quarter in Adjmi’s native New Orleans. The 7,775 sq ft marina- and ocean-facing apartment was interior-designed by Finchatton to create a substantial private residence with contemporary living spaces in this exclusive location. Jiin Kim-Inoue, Design Director for the project comments: A ‘ t Orchid Apartment V, our aim was to create the sophisticated and timeless interiors which Finchatton are known for but at the same time, we did not want to create a London apartment in the Caribbean. The quality of light is so different that we got to use colours and textures that we don’t normally get to use. It was such a fun and exciting project to be involved with!’ FRONT: This living space is dominated by the stunning sea views across the wraparound terrace. LEFT: An expanse of marble on both the flooring and island unit in this kitchen enhances the clean lines and contemporary look to this room. Situated on the fourth floor of the Orchid building, the apartment features a 3,540 sq ft wraparound terrace which floods the apartment with light and stunning sea and marina views from every room. Dark wood decking and fabulous contemporary furniture make this a breath-taking space to enjoy, that complements the interior design to seamlessly bring the outside in to the apartment. Of the six bedrooms, the well-appointed master suite with bedroom, study, dressing room, and bathroom, also features a private terrace area with its own bar and Jacuzzi spa. Further bedrooms are also en-suite, two of which include private dressing rooms. Served directly by two residents’ lifts, the apartment also features a spacious 240 sq ft entrance lobby, dining room, high specification indoor and outdoor kitchens, media room and a reception room with full-height glass doors leading onto the terrace. Finishes throughout the apartment include contemporary Crema Bottocino and Pietra Grey marble flooring, dark timber doors, oak veneer flooring, and bespoke joinery, giving a cool and contemporary feel to the interior. The voluminous rooms are light and airy, with individually zoned ventilation and comfort cooling systems in addition to a home automation system ensuring technically advanced living accommodation. The neutral colour palette allows the wonderful sea blues of the exterior views to really stand out and gives the whole apartment a very calm and luxurious feel. Christopher Anand, Managing Partner of Albany, commented: ‘We are thrilled to have Finchatton design a residence at Albany. We have long admired their work and know it will resonate with our buyers who seek and recognise that level of quality.’ 150 Bridge for Design Summer 2016

his Madrid apartment is located in Barrio Las Salesas, a highly fashionable neighbourhood with an array of art galleries, boutiques, hotels, bars and restaurants. Designer Aimee Joaristi took inspiration from the atmosphere and characteristics of the area and mimicked this in her styling for the house and its furnishings. Built in the late nineteenth century shortly after the neoclassical movement, the original floorplan was typical of townhouses of the period. It consisted of multiple small alcoves where windows did not provide much ventilation and was built with a central corridor acting as the main axis of the building. To fulfil the brief for this project, the whole building was subsequently renovated and the floorplan reworked. easy by the square shape of the alcoves, and the original ceiling height was recovered to give an open and roomy feel to the main spaces. Exposing some of the former wooden columns also provided texture to the townhouse, and gave an interesting focal perspective into the room. ‘This house had something which captured my heart – the divine natural light,’ says Aimee. Removing room partitions opened up the space even further creating a more flexible open-plan room, where clients can choose how to use the space based on their personal preferences. Aimee made purposeful design 158 Bridge for Design Summer 2016

decisions which would reflect the natural light around the entire space by painting the walls, ceilings and floors in different shades of white. This neutral tone permitted the introduction of bright colours; pops of blues, reds and pinks litter the house and add a fun and bold artistic feel to the décor. Colourful fabrics, such as velvets, were combined with white textiles to create an attractive contrast of colour, allowing attention to be drawn to particular pieces of furniture and decorative objects. An eclectic mix of Spanish antiques, mainly from the sixteenth and

seventeenth centuries, take centre stage in the house. They were collected by the father of the owner and each represent an important stage of life in Spanish culture. The walls are also heavily decorated with artworks from a range of famous artists, including Spanish painter Diego Velazquez, Gordillo and Nino, as well as the work of Designer Aimee Joaristi herself. Aimee’s pieces add a splash of colour to the interior creating a sense of humour which contrasts with the classic artworks. This townhouse is a celebration of Madrid’s creative and artistic atmosphere, and its bold use of colours, artworks and antiques has perfectly captured the heart and aura of the city. Its clever use of the unique and contemporary mixed in amongst the traditional and antique has left the building with an eclectic feel that perfectly captures the heart and essence of the quirky neighbourhood in which it sits. 160 Bridge for Design Summer 2016

estled within a 1900s farm estate, located in Sierra de Tramontana, is a Majorcan house that is typical of Mediterranean culture. It is owned by interior designer, Damian Sanchez, who is best known as the award-winning creative director of the fashion brand MANGO. However, since completing many interior design projects - including the homes of Maria Candau, Giovanni Testino and Isak Andic – he has turned his hand to renovating this Spanish property to its former glory without losing any of its traditional legacy. With the help of a couple of his friends, Gabriel Santos and Susanna Thomas, Damien has managed to decorate the interior to reflect his own tastes with objects that have a clear connection to nature and convey a natural lifestyle. Keeping a sense of natural elegance to the space and retaining the property’s traditional architecture was always at the forefront of this project. Damian explains he had been looking for something in the area of Soller, when Gabriel found the home that would be the perfect fit. ‘With its mountain views, natural light and indigenous architecture – it was love at first sight.’ The brief was then to create a modern home that had a constant connection to the garden and outdoors, all without diminishing the property’s heritage. OPPOSITE: A spacious living room with sofas by Flexform facing each other across a Damien Sanchez coffee table. To create the sense of flow between outdoors and in, a natural cane pergola was erected to create a stylish canopy to link the interior and exterior of this house. This beautifully frames the terrace area and provides the perfect space to host dinner parties outdoors enjoying the beautiful Mediterranean culture and stunning views. Elsewhere in the grounds, natural stone walls which were built over a century ago and are typical to the Balearic architecture, landscape and frame the garden whilst blending in with the natural surroundings. The stunning swimming pool is tiled with glass mosaics from Bisazza, and the surrounding area is decked with beautiful teak boards. Colourful

cushions laid out on the stone steps by the pool encourage visitors to sit and enjoy the sun, whilst relaxing hammocks under umbrellas allow guests to linger and enjoy the ‘dolce far niente’. For the interior of the house Damian decided to use a neutral colour palette throughout the house to create a colourless backdrop, against which he could have fun with the addition of vibrant objects and bold pieces of furniture to create the look he was after. ‘I think that good quality finishes define a project and lead to an excellent result.’ This is apparent in the entrance hall where visitors are welcomed with raw and inspiring works of art set against a backdrop of natural stone and neutral walls. the impressive abujardada stone staircase and a Joaquim Chancho artwork hangs on the wall above a painted French console table and a bold geometric rug. The living room is divided into two living areas – one where the steel fireplace can be enjoyed and the other surrounds coffee tables designed by Damian himself. A red and black standing sculpture, designed by Carlos Evangelista, stands proudly by one of the many sets of French windows which give stunning views out to the garden. A brightly coloured painting by Gunther Forg hangs boldly above the fireplace and cushions with cheerful prints add a splash of colour to the neutral sofas, keeping a fun and playful feel to the room. 168 Bridge for Design Summer 2016

In the spacious and contemporary kitchen a wide granite island takes centre stage and adds a dramatic bold statement to the neutral tones of the rest of the room. An impressive yet functional kitchen is important to Damian, as he explains ‘I am passionate about cooking.’ A collection of flatware is displayed on the walls above the fitted wood units and a couple of pendant lights hang from a sloping beamed ceiling. A full height sliding door opens onto a terrace, flooding the space with light. Upstairs, the bedroom is a truly tranquil space, following the same neutral colour palette as the rest of the house. It is decorated in natural fabrics, with linen, blankets and cushions to provide texture and add warmth

to the room. An eye catching metal chandelier hangs to the side of the bed giving a splash of colour, whilst the sloped ceiling draws the eye down to the wood burning stove opposite the bed. Two washbasins are set on a unit with a mirror and wall lamps above. A shower area is surrounded by a glass screen. The sloping, beamed ceiling and the wood floor provides a rustic feel to the room. The overall look and feel of the Soller House is one of peaceful tranquillity, and it is testament to Damian Sanchez’s creative passion that he has managed to so successfully blend the timelessness of great pieces of furniture with a blend of original antiques and more unique flea market finds in the same space. 170 Bridge for Design Summer 2016

hat could be more relaxing than staying at a waterfront guesthouse? Surrounded by lush gardens, with Narragansett Bay lapping at its doorstep, the contemporary Rhode Island cottage houses both its owners’ guests and art in high style. It’s hard to believe that in its previous incarnation, this sanctuary was a rotting pool house, one of several small buildings on the grounds of the owners’ Summer compound. Envisioning a space in which they could entertain, display their collection of contemporary art and host overnight guests, they sought out architect Greg Snider, interior designer Meryl Santopietro and landscape architect Sara Bradford, all based in Providence, to orchestrate the transformation. In terms of the architecture, Snider set out to prove that small can be beautiful. Working within the existing pool house’s footprint, he devised a 1,400-square-foot floor plan that can accommodate a

cocktail party crowd as gracefully as a pair of weekend visitors. The main level consists of a spacious living room and kitchen, along with the spa and a powder room. A study is tucked in a loft above, accessed by a glass-sided staircase that appears to float between the two levels. To maximise space, there are no bedrooms, per se: the study converts to sleeping quarters by way of a Roche-Bobois pullout sofa, and a sitting room in the walk-out basement doubles as a bedroom. Reminiscent of a tropical bungalow, the guesthouse has a trussed ceiling that sits gently atop pure-white walls. Snider sheathed the water side of the house in glass, bathing the space in light and revealing an expanse of bay and sky. ‘We avoided wood trims, running the plaster right up to the windows,’ Snider explains. ‘It’s very simple, very Zen.’ Santopietro, too, took a pared-down approach, designing the interiors around the burnished concrete floors that flow through the house. Though cool underfoot, the grey floors look warm, mottled with

ambers and browns. ‘Concrete is a fabulous material and really drove the design feeling,’ Santopietro says. ‘The minimalist quality of this design carries such a big impact. There’s just something about the simplicity of the white walls and concrete floors. The layering of these very simple materials creates a wonderful texture when they put in their artwork, or their beautiful accessories that they’ve collected over the years from their travels.’ From woven baskets and handicrafts to bold canvases, the owners’ treasures fit into the space naturally, in a way that is striking but not intimidating. The collection is heavy on South American art, including work in the living room by two Argentine artists: an understated black-and-white square piece by Eugenio Espinoza and a ceiling mobile by Daniel Joglar, which the artist himself installed. Observant guests will notice a recurring circular motif in many of the pieces, a reflection of the owners’ interest in feng shui. Regulars at Miami’s Art Basel exhibition, they worked closely with Snider and Santopietro to make sure the guesthouse could handle their ever-growing collection. ‘With this type of design, it’s always evolving,’ Santopietro notes. ‘So if you came back to it from your travels and you have something new, you can change things around very easily. It’s a very wonderful backdrop for them, being collectors.’ LEFT: The spacious contemporary kitchen has a polished concrete floor, a central island and a fireplace set in a brick wall BOTTOM LEFT: The seating area has spectacular views of Narragansett Bay from a floor-to-ceiling picture window BELOW: Sunlight floods into the Japanese-style bathroom from a series of picture windows set high up in the walls and a wood floor.

For all its gallery cool, the guesthouse maintains a warm, welcoming aura, its sleek materials tempered by more rustic touches. In the kitchen, for example, a brick chimneypiece adds warmth and texture to super-sleek white lacquer cabinetry. The furnishings Santopietro chose follow suit: sculptural white sofas, glass-topped side tables and natural jute rugs are both low-key and luxurious. To this neutral canvas, she added splashes of saturated colour, like a zesty orange ottoman in the living room and orange-patterned pillows on the sofas. The serene Asian-inspired spa, by contrast, was made for absolute relaxation. Steeped in rich earth tones, it features a cast concrete sink and a deep tub where guests can soak away their worries. The walls are covered with a striated ceramic tile that mimics dark wood, while a ribbon of windows just below the ceiling provides a leafy border. Larger than a typical master bath, the space was designed to hold a massage table. ‘It’s not unusual for the owners to bring in someone to do manicures, pedicures or massages, to provide those amenities for their guests,’ Santopietro says. Not least among the guesthouse’s amenities are its gardens, which Bradford designed with an artist’s sensitivity to shape, colour and texture. On the entry side of the house, a waterfall spills into a koi pond, setting a tropical tone. water, where a mosaic of evergreen shrubbery and dramatic slabs of stone, brought in from Western Massachusetts, slopes down to the rocky shore. Stand at just the right spot and a sculpture by French artist Bernar Venet seems to hold the entire guesthouse in its steel arc, another nod to feng shui. ‘The owners, of course, have an eye for art,’ Bradford says, ‘so their landscape became an artwork.’ You could say the same about the entire project. Here, art doesn’t just take the form of canvases and sculpture: it’s in every aspect of the guesthouse’s design, the product of a fruitful collaboration between clients and designers. ‘Your role is to take your clients’ dreams and ideas and make them happen, and do it in a way that’s beyond what they ever imagined,’ Santopietro says. Indeed, she and her colleagues have created a place that not only lives up to its owners’ vision but exceeds their guests’ wildest expectations as well. 180 Bridge for Design Summer 2016

ithin the heart of the vast expanses of green of Frioul, the set designer Giuseppe Mangia lives in a world of his own creation; an old farmhouse refurbished under the watchful eye of the architect Silvia Pedron. Originally from Salento, Giuseppe Mangia holds the region where he was born close to his heart even if he had lived at the other end of the Italian boot since he was a child. After having studied business and trade, he finally decided to give his creative desires free reign and become a set designer. His apprenticeship was long and challenging, yet also fruitful. Today, as an associate of Studio Eye, he collaborates with renowned fashion and design brands based in Italy, such as Moroso, Foscarini and Mutina ceramiche.

His pace of life is intense. It became essential for him to find a calm and peaceful place to live between his travels. With a friend, he went back and forth across the countryside surrounding Udine until he found an old farm, flanked by two brick barns and a large gravel courtyard. The only remnant of the past garden is an old elm tree on the edge of the property, overlooking the road. Giuseppe very quickly saw the potential of the site; encouraged by his architect friend Silvia Pedron, he embarked on this adventure. ‘A real adventure, because whilst the works were taking place I lived on-site, I wanted to dedicate my time to the restoration by working with the masons and artisans.’ ‘Everything needed to be reviewed’ Silvia Pedron continues, ‘the house had lost its soul, we needed to strip everything down.’ They had to strip back the walls to discover the bricks and river stones underneath, take the plaster off the walls, Bridge for Design Summer 2016 185

remove a recently laid floor to install an underground crawl space then pour the concrete floor, create light by installing glass doors in place of the windows and open up the indoor spaces in order to emphasise the long outlook. They connected the living area to one of the barns which had been used as a garage; and then freed up the staircase that leads upstairs to give the impression of volume through creating a double height atrium. However the upstairs, designed as the night quarters, has kept its original layout - the rooms follow on from one another, looking onto a corridor where the redesigned windows bring in natural light. ‘Here, the white tones dominate, bringing light and tranquility,’ says Silvia. Giuseppe has a green thumb and has devoted himself to the garden. In front of the house, the gravel has disappeared to make room for an open meadow where his two dogs, Mia and Lillo, can run around. Following on from this meadow, a hanging garden sets the tone; on different levels, wooden paths cross over small patches of river stones. The structure is embellished with pruned boxwood hedges which alternate with plants that are left to grow freely. The collection of monumental agaves and succulents present everywhere provide an insight into Giuseppe’s native Salento. The wall of the neighbouring house serves as a backdrop, which is ideally suited to the boundless expansiveness of the Virginia Creeper. While the main façade is there to show off the elegance of the plants, simple

rose bushes with white petals climb the walls, taking turns with the blossoming wisteria which stretches up to the top of the windows. The old fence backing onto the street has been replaced by a tall wall. At its base, imposing custom-built concrete basins hold crowded bamboo plants, rippling in the slightest breeze. The decoration reflects the creative universe of the master of the house; it is a well thought out and explosive blend which brings together recycled materials, such as the steel panels in the kitchen and the wood covering the wall adjoining the stairs and reclaimed objects from photo shoots, using superb pieces signed by the biggest names in the design industry. Everything is serene and harmonious. It emanates a friendly and unusual atmosphere, ideal for new projects. 188 Bridge for Design Summer 2016

The Art and Antiques Fair, Olympia returns to London for the 44th year with an impressive dealer line-up and exciting new content. Running from June 27 until July 3 inclusive, it is a key event in the global art and antiques calendar attracting close to 30,000 visitors and hosting a vast array of items from antiquity to the present day. 160 dealers will showcase over 55,000 items with prices ranging from £100 to £1million. Brand new for the Arts & Antiques Fair this year is a showcase section, welcoming new and emerging galleries and dealers who have been running for seven years or less. This will add a new dimension to the event by giving visitors access to selected up-and-coming talent which wouldn’t usually be seen at an international fair of this calibre. Also new for 2016, is the introduction of the first London version of the critically acclaimed Chicagobased show, The Sculptural Objects Functional Art and Design Fair (SOFA). A dedicated pavilion at Olympia will be dedicated to this, displaying threedimensional art and design. Whilst following on from their successful participation at the 2015 fair HALI, the showcase of internationally renowned textiles businesses, will be making a welcome return to Olympia in 2016.
