The warmer months are upon us and our minds are more and more occupied with thoughts of gardens and greenery; we long for days of morning coffee al fresco and outdoor supper parties that last all evening long. All of the latest collections by Neptune have an intrinsic link to nature. For example, the Suffolk rectangular table and Long Island dining chairs evoke garden terrace memories due to the Cactus green hand-painted finish on the table and the whimsical floral chair covers. www.neptune.com

THE HOME OF
NINA CAMPBELL
T
hese photographs from Simon Brown show the contemporary yet classic mix displayed in Nina’s own home that is so true to her interior design beliefs. The pops of colour such as the acid yellow Ralph chair mixed with the ombre lacquered turquoise walls in the hall behind make for quite an impact. Entertaining is one of Nina’s passions so little odd seating areas and small tables are always popular so that the maximum amount of people can fit in and be comfortable. The fabulous fireplace was found by Nina on Atlantic Avenue when shopping in New York. She decided to mirror all around it and lacquer the ceiling so that light bounces around the room and gives a greater sense of space. The Sophie Coryndon painting above is one of Nina’s favourites as it has hung on a few different walls of her multiple homes; ‘I love the familiarity of favourite pieces and mixing old and new’.

ONATHAN ADLER
Chic Chinoiserie meets Park Avenue Flair. Radical in a modern space or perfectly at home in a traditional environment, Ming-style bases and bamboo and blossom details add uptown elegance. ‘Lashings of lacquer and pops of jewel tones are forever chic,’ says Jonathan Adler.

The sofa is a Chesterfield pared down to the essentials with a massive dose of glamour. Available in a range of sizes and colours, Matlock is truly sensational in bright velvets, or unimpeachably tasteful in neutral walls. www.sofasandstuff.com 26

DOMESTICITY WITH PERSONALITY
O
ne Crown Place, a 246-apartment mixed-use scheme on the edge of London, has just unveiled the interior designs for some of the spaces in the development designed by leading British designer, Sophie Ashby. Studio Ashby was commissioned to design the scheme’s nine penthouses and communal areas, including a bespoke kitchen, vintage gym, private dining room, residents’ lounge, cinema room, treatment room, studio and sharing terrace. The Studio’s overall vision for the space was ‘to create a sense of domesticity using a natural base palette layered with texture and pattern so as to give the areas personality, but not compete with the skyline views of London,’ it reveals. The development’s fully furnished model apartment and amenities encompass the old-meets-new character of the City and Hackney. T: +44 (0) 203 176 2571

LUXURY SET IN STONE E
lite Stone was founded in 2000. Since 2013, its headquarters have been housed in Verona, in two buildings: Slab Division for stacking stone slabs, and ES Atelier which opened this year, for an array of interior decorating ideas using marble, onyx, semi-precious stone and back lit panels in room settings. Elite Stone latest innovation is the E-Light system: thin sheets of marble and onyx layered on LED lights embedded in transparent glass. E-Light adds a theatrical effect to kitchens, cabinet doors, room dividers and front doors, an idea which has taken ten years of research to perfect. The new London showroom will be on one floor, in an area of 200 square metres, with a ‘back to nature’ entrance, a living room with sliding doors, a back lit jaguar panel and the ‘one plate kitchen’ in back lit onyx where appliances slide away.

or the first time in history, a new website brings together some of the most beloved names in French Design. French interior designers, architects and craftsmen have long been recognised for their savoir-faire, and the site is the first to gain access to their precious inventory of creations - as well as being the first to make it available to a wider public audience. The Invisible Collection collates around thirty of France’s most illustrious interior designers and architects. Previously only available to private clients, their designs are now for sale on the site, which is curated by a team of design and luxury experts based in Paris, London and New York. Importantly, each piece on the new site is made to order. ‘In a world where everything has become ubiquitous, having a bespoke piece of furniture, textile or a rug made for your home is the definition of luxury,’ the brand explains.

A HOMEAGE TO REBELLION

omeage is the new range from British Designers Blackpop; the collection sees unconventional and spontaneous wallpaper and fabric designs inspired by the New York Abstract Expressionists movement of the 40’s and 50’s. Painterly and deeply textured, this collection is inspired by painters such as Jackson Pollock. The range sees rebellious, mirrored designs that appear to playfully dart and dance, whilst randomly splashed colour and dripping paint create dark mysterious paths that lead to nowhere. The creative force behind Blackpop is Maxine Hall. With her expert eye for detail, pattern and colour, she excels in creating collections that are remarkable for their beauty, opulence and innovative style. Viewers can expect the full ‘maximalist’ experience from these Artist-inspired wallpaper and fabric designs splashed with anarchic beauty, rich in textures and tones. ‘I see walls as empty canvases waiting to be brought to life,’ says Maxine. www.blackpop.co.uk

olding a Royal Warrant, Hypnos doesn’t just provide stunning bespoke beds, but gives excellent advice on sleep and well being - even to the Royal Family. So they must have some decent advice up their sleeve! Hypnos has shared a piece of bedroom wisdom with us regarding space-saving: Placing lots of furniture in a room is not only overwhelming, but is also an inefficient use of space, which is why furniture that is multi-functional and custom designed to fit is in high demand. Beds with in-built storage, such as StoreAway and SuperStorage bed bases, are a great way of freeing up space in the bedroom and creating a relaxing haven perfect for getting the best night’s sleep. There is a gutter system which drains rainwater away to the columns and then off the side of the blades. With the unpredictability of the British weather, this is the perfect garden companion to be able to enjoy the outdoors in all types of weather. T: +44 (0) 140 371 1188 | www.lelouvreshutters.co.uk

COBBLE STONES C
obbles with a difference, from supplier Stone Age, have been utilised to create a traditional garden path and accompanying sun terraces at a home in South London. Created as part of a project with garden designer, Robert Budwig, the company’s cobbles are deeper than most stones on the market and offer a more robust shape for exterior use, the supplier says. Colour is also important where these cobbles are concerned, with their blue, beige and grey tones giving the Victorian terrace garden a tone of permanence. Of course, in an exterior setting, the colours also contrast well with the greenery and planting evident in the garden. The actual path acts as more of a natural border between flowerbed and lawn, and it leads to a second terrace - right in the sun trap area of the new garden!

INSIDE AND OUTSIDE Performance textiles are an essential part of indoor-outdoor life
L
iving in a bicoastal world, I am fortunate that it affords me the opportunity to create soothing and soulful spaces in any landscape. In Los Angeles, indoor-outdoor living is the daily fabric of our very lives. The colours and textures of nature inspire me beyond what is trending. I currently favour Mid-Century design. In the 1950’s, outdoor fabrics were limited to canvas in solids and cabana stripes inevitably becoming a staple for every umbrella table, patio and poolside furnishing. The evolution of solution dyed acrylic and the European solution dyed polyacrylic now affords the luxury of bringing the vast array of wovens, prints, velvets, chenille, boucles, and multiple other weaves into the home. I select Performance textiles that are luxuriously soft and elegant. I no longer have to consider if the fabric is appropriate for a particular application because performance textiles may be used for any application. I find a freedom in design knowing that my clients, their children, and their pets may live on the furniture without ever having to worry about dirt and spills. I love outdoor sheers! To view the divine elegance of outdoor sheers is like watching a dance. How relaxing to
90
Bridge for Design Summer 2017
curl up with a good book and a glass of wine and watch your outdoor sheers sway delicately in the breeze. The Delano hotel in Miami is lavish with outdoor sheers, surrounding its entryway, billowing in the breeze as you approach. It is a magnificent treatment epitomising the beauty and grace of bringing sheers outdoors. I have come to include Performance textiles as the essential part of indoor-outdoor living and an integral part of my life. I think designers and clients are still discovering the properties of Performance textiles. City clients sometimes have the misconception that if they don’t have an outdoor space, there is no need for a Performance textile. This is no longer the case and I bring these textiles into the kitchen, dining room, family room, bedroom, and basically anywhere else for they complement the space they occupy. I consider myself fortunate to reap the benefits of the bounty of California, a lifestyle blending the new with the traditions of the past, a fresh approach to living with the pioneer spirit and the diverse lifestyles and landscapes that awaken the senses. I love what I do and I strive to create homes that inspire comfort and creativity. I am now able to take that one step further by bringing the inside out and the outside in.

TIME FOR AL FRESCO Outdoor kitchens have become the ultimate hub of entertaining outdoors
T
he ultimate way to elevate the outdoor living experience to the next level is the addition of a fully functional, super sleek outdoor kitchen. Outdoor kitchens are increasingly being seen in the design of high-end homes both in the city on urban roof terraces as well as in the leafier parts of town and country. The concept of utilising the garden as a place to relax and entertain as an extra room of the home is now very well established and, consequently, a longer term view is now being taken by both home owners and property developers, who are realising that how we cook outdoors has evolved. The kitchen has long been the heart of the home and outdoor kitchens have become the hub of entertaining outdoors by integrating both cooking and entertaining spaces. With an outdoor kitchen, the entire food preparation process is revolutionised as it can be moved completely outdoors, along with storage of all the essential equipment; so no more dashing back inside for tools and forgotten items. It is essential to choose marine-grade stainless steel cabinets, specifically designed for use outdoors with magnetic seals that are waterproof and impervious to dust, insects and bugs. It is also important to choose an integrated grill designed and manufactured to commercial standards which incorporates illuminated controls and task lighting within the grill - do make sure every element is exacting and best in class for life outdoors - look for brass burners and ceramic briquettes to ensure even heat distribution allowing cooking of an entire roast, not just a few sausages!
92
Bridge for Design Summer 2017
Indeed, outdoor kitchens are often more luxurious than the conventional indoor kitchen as space limitations can disappear outdoors and teppenyaki plates, warming drawers and even cocktail stations become feasible luxuries. If space and budget allow, then an outdoor fridge or even a dishwasher can be incorporated in the design - but that wouldn’t be everything - of course there must be the kitchen sink too! Mains water, gas and electricity connections can be taken from either existing points or run from the main property - do consider the location of these services when planning the positioning of the kitchen. The aesthetic of the kitchen should be tied in with materials used in either the hard landscaping of garden design or the architecture of the property to achieve a result which blends the style of the kitchen seamlessly with the exterior design of the home and garden. Cladding in stone, slate or render to match the property should be considered to make sure the memory of the free-standing rusty BBQ is gone forever. Granite makes the most practicable work surface as it can handle the heat of the grill and the vagaries of the climate. Alternatively, for a quick solution avoiding water and gas installations, choose a ready to go modular, free-standing outdoor kitchen designed with fewer appliances and fueled by bottled gas hidden within one of the steel cabinets. With a granite surface, contemporary HPL (High Pressure Laminate) finish and hermetically sealed cabinets the Island Outdoor Kitchen has the added benefit of being able to be transported and easily relocated when moving home.

ROOF GARDEN A Winter garden full of evergreens and ferns creates a true penthouse oasis
Emily Williams and Sean Brady, BradyWilliams T: +44 (0) 207 580 0154 www.bradywilliamsstudio.com
A
mazon Property, a prime central London residential developer, and British Land, one of Europe’s largest publicity listed real estate companies, have unveiled Hempel Gardens, a collection of 18 luxury apartments, including two spacious penthouses, at the former Hempel Hotel in Bayswater, central London. The apartments form part of The Hempel Collection, a wider development of 33 residences beautifully set around a private garden square. Interior design studio, BradyWilliams, has dressed three show apartments at Hempel Gardens, representing the first time the studio has designed on behalf of a developer. Emily Williams, Director of BradyWilliams, said ‘The gardens are such a beautiful part of the property and we wanted to reflect this within the interiors. We have had planters placed wherever possible, so that there may always be a vignette of foliage throughout. We were able to develop a Winter garden in the penthouse, full of ferns and evergreens and a suspended daybed creating a true oasis. The gardens were also our inspiration for the sourcing of the bespoke porcelain and gold leaf installation and hand-painted mirror screens in the penthouse.’ When designing for residential clients, the brief is often to emulate that of hotel spaces and reach the same level of luxury and function in the home. BradyWilliams have designed the apartments to be synonymous with luxury hotels but with plenty of space for owners to put their own stamp on them.

ALL YEAR ROUND
Use of Moorish elements in soft blues has created a fresh outdoors living area Caroline Burke, Caroline Burke Designs T: 001 310 546 6862 www.carolineburkedesigns.com
A
love of outdoor living and eating throughout the year was the inspiration for this recently reinvented outdoor space in Manhattan Beach, California. The resulting rooms, by Caroline Burke Designs, make up an extremely comfortable multipurpose living area that allows the clients to enjoy, not only dining al fresco, but comfortable lounging too. All the furniture is upholstered or slipcovered in outdoor fabrics and designed to feel like they’re indoor pieces. This fun detail follows through to the sun umbrella and perennials fabrics that have been used. However, the outdoor drapery can be closed off should any inclement weather strike, and of course, in the Winter months, allowing the room to be used all year round, as per the brief. Caroline Burke Designs explain the overall feel is a fresh take on incorporating Moorish elements, notably in soft, interesting blues. In another stylish move, the Moorish pendants that traditionally would have stronger reds, darker blues and ambers were unusually designed with clear glass. Similarly, the fireplace’s tiles are individual pieces that have been hand-painted and designed, this time with a softer blue/grey. Above and around this, the limestone mantle was intentionally designed oversized for maximum impact. Other, subtler details make the space sing - the TV is tucked away behind distressed wooden doors, the stone floor is blue, in a Versailles pattern, while an outdoor rug is placed in the seating area to separate the space out.
RIGHT: This seating area has a nautical feel due to the use of various shades of blues mixed with white in a range of patterns - this is even seen within the individual hand-painted tiles seen within the fireplace

SKYLINE GARDEN
This New York roof garden is the perfect ‘garden to kitchen’ solution
Laurie Blumenfeld-Russo, LBR | HOME T: 001 917 757 5464 www.lbrhome.com
A
New York couple knew they wanted their Summer home in the city - only on their roof. A keen cook and even keener gardener, the pair asked Brooklyn Studio Prospect to mirror both passions, as well as making the most from the views of Manhattan. The result, a roof garden with two distinct areas which met the brief perfectly. Inspired by NYC’s Highline and Brooklyn Bridge parks, it reflects both an urban sophistication and a full spectrum of plants. The couple aimed for, and achieved, an urban oasis with flowers, vegetables and herbs for the kitchen, plus space to relax. The kitchen needed to be fully functioning with maximum storage, a refrigerator, sink and barbeque. A stone counter preparation area was vital. The resulting, almost industrial, feel acts as a spectacular contrast to the garden. Here, vegetables and herbs flourish, giving a ‘garden to kitchen’ solution that’s second to none. An eclectic mix of perennials and annuals, layered in colour, texture and height, lies in illuminated planters at the edges. Despite having to move everything up four flights of stairs and the need for electrical and plumbing permits, this garden of two halves is a double success for Studio Prospect. The clients lives have been changed, with both passions indulged, and their living space doubled.

CÔTE D’AZUR A Belle Époque villa boasts a South facing pool and an expansive garden

his charming, three-storey, six-bedroom Belle Époque villa is situated only minutes from the centre of Vence, CÔte d’Azur, located high in the hills between Nice and Antibes. It boasts both a South facing pool and an unusually expansive garden, given its edge-of-town location. The previous owners had already done major landscaping works to the gardens, softening a previous series of dry-stone wall ‘restanques’ into a gently sloping lawn and planting intelligently, including some stand-out mature palm trees. ‘The beautiful, elegant fascia of the property has remained unchanged,’ David Price, Founder of David Price Design, commented, with reference to the architectural works to the property, ‘with classic shuttered windows and a cast-iron balconied first floor. Changes were made, however, to the extension to the right of the main house as you face it, where the kitchen and the dining room are located, subtly increasing the size of the kitchen and putting in new large glass folding doors at the front and a new side window to maximise natural light and create easy access to the garden.

CROSSING CONTINENTS
T
he brief designers Martin Moore had to follow for this kitchen in the Home Counties said it needed to be the heart of a home for a family, who’d recently relocated from Sydney. With family time a scarce commodity, they also wanted to celebrate both indoor and outdoor living a mood synonymous with Australia. A long list of elements had to be incorporated, including having a homework area/office, indoor drinks station, and dedicated juicing zone - complete with organic bins. Flow was important, and designer Pam Baker has established this very well. The key to maximum functionality was to have two large islands - one focused on cooking, the other on prepping. Both feature strong Caesarstone Osprey worktops and side cladding. The kitchen furniture, made to order in Martin Moore’s Yorkshire workshops, combines hand-painted elements with oak - in direct homeage to the overall Arts & Crafts aesthetic of the house.

he feeling that hits when entering this stunning apartment is immense with its floor to ceiling windows, clean lines and open space. The rooms flow one into the next with tasteful furniture and elegant touches blending harmoniously with marble floors and sparkling chandeliers. The owners wanted automation technology to be present and accessible but not the focal point of the rooms for sophistication and simplicity, so the team at high end AV specialist Knektd naturally turned to Creston technology to provide this. A key aspect of the brief was to make sure all the automation was hidden. ‘It was really important to us that the technology was discreet,’ commented the homeowner. ‘We now have bespoke moving panels which complement our interior design and disguise the clever technology beneath. For example, when required we can press a button and the Damien Hurst artwork in the reception room will rise, revealing a 55 inch 4K TV.’ The residence is a great example of how much automation can be going on behind the scenes. Everything that can be controlled is controlled, but it’s not the main focal point. The automation technology blends nicely with the style of the apartment.

EYE OF THE STORM This London Penthouse acts as an escape from the hustle and bustle of London Elisabeth Johnsson, L Works T: +44 (0) 791 941 8131 www.lworks.co.uk

London penthouse has been transformed so that you wouldn’t guess it actually lies in one of London’s busiest areas, with water and serenity being buzzwords, according to designer, Elisabeth Johnsson. She explains that, being in such a busy area, the feeling of being within the eye of the storm was another concept for the home. The brief was to maximise the feeling of space and light within, but there was also a desire to retain a sense of minimalism. A wall of bamboo surrounds the entire tiled terrace, but back inside, the colour white is key. The main problem that the team had to overcome was the terrace. Elisabeth says the 120 square metres of white porcelain tiles were hauled up the side of the building by crane but were actually less than satisfactory and had to be replaced - no mean feat! This meant a delay of only three weeks, however. While there was a very simple scheme of white, grey and brown for the interior, that’s not to say there isn’t colour elsewhere. Vast artworks and a stunning fish tank offer contrasts, and at the centre of the room is a coffee table made from an old door, which Elisabeth sourced. The rug is from the Rug Company, chosen as the designer knew she wanted a pattern here, something absent in the rest of the room’s design. The sofa and armchairs were custom made with white linen loose covers, while further texture can be seen in the fireplace’s filetto marble. Finally, in the living area, the stunning artworks which hang come from Anders Brinch, Chrstian Lemmerz and Erik A. Frandsen, sourced from the Hans Alf Gallery in Denmark.

JEFFERSON’S
RETREAT This Virginian countryside homestead was inspired by a past US President

he interior design work of Barry Dixon in a sumptuous homestead in Hot Springs is not only a celebration of the rich Virginian countryside that surrounds it, but also a nod to the rich elegance of the classic American life. In fact, the therapeutic springs in this region of the US were favoured by founding father Thomas Jefferson, who loved to holiday in the area, and this was of great influence on Dixon during the project, he says. The interior design is something of a modern take on Jefferson, with him never far from the designer’s thoughts as he planned out designs for the 8,300 sq. ft. retreat. RIGHT: The traditional-style map room pays homeage to Jefferson and Dixon’s love of geography and exploration ABOVE: Sink-in seating is placed in front of the fireplace with a grand piano tucked into the corner, all contributing towards a cosy and relaxing ambiance
124 Bridge for Design Summer 2017
Located in an environmentally protected area, this is first reflected in the colour scheme and mural in the entry hall, but then in the colours in the other rooms - aided by stunning views from each window. As well as this, Jefferson’s passion for astronomy has been more subtly referenced in what Dixon calls the radial curves, ovals and disks found throughout. The adventures of modern day visitors to the area - including activities such as fishing, rafting and hiking - are also celebrated and accented in the home’s design. Leading in from the wildlife theme of the entry hall, the living room introduces a tone of classicism, with columns that morph into side tables and Greek motifs in the trimmings. Luxury is also key here, with even the bookcases getting suede upholstery, and the fireplace and music corner allowing ample opportunity for lounging. In the dining room, sophistication prevails. Two styles of Queen Anne chairs feature, while tableware is kept in two slim glass fronted bookcases. Their slender nature is mirrored in the tall doors leading to the circular patio an ideal spot for any overspill from a larger dinner party. LEFT: A Niermann Weeks chandelier hangs in the centre of this sitting area above a Guy Chaddock & Co Sofa. Dixon’s homeage to a 21st Century Jefferson is perhaps most visually evident in the kitchen area, with the mix of wood and metal taking it far above the realms of just a simple country kitchen. A curved wall in the adjacent Keeping Room softens the right angles, while the Mudroom to the opposite side, benefits from Portieres which can be drawn across to hide the more utilitarian elements. The master suite occupies a private wing of the main 128 Bridge for Design Summer 2017
floor, and has its own hallway, bedroom, living room and bath. Every bit a self-contained apartment, Dixon’s careful placement of the beds make the very most of the mountain views, while a further wildlife mural links the bedroom with the bath, as well as recalling themes of the home used throughout. Upstairs there are bedrooms for boys and girls, a sitting room, a terrace lounge in warm earthy tones and - in

perhaps the most obvious homeage to Jefferson - a studious looking map room. There is also a media room for films, and a further guest suite with its own bedroom, kitchenette, sitting room and bath. Of course, Barry Dixon could only guess as to how Thomas Jefferson might have lived his life today. But with his impressive interior designs at Hot Springs, you get the feeling his efforts would not be too wide of the mark. 130 Bridge for Design Summer 2017

he picturesque views out across the wide bay of Cape Town in South Africa are some of the most panoramic - and spectacular - in the world. But if you were to turn back away from these, nestled high in the rocks you’d catch a glimpse of a bright, angular home that takes the breath away. Originally built over a decade ago by Cape Town architects SAOTA, the home’s new owners looked to urban designers ARRCC to completely renovate the building, and also asked them to increase the level of accommodation within it. Understandably, this was not without its challenges. One of the main conceptual issues the team faced was trying to balance the original, almost Art Deco mood with the more modern rewrite. The decision was taken to add a third floor to create the desired extra room,

which obviously altered the overall impression of the revitalized home considerably. However, when approaching the entrance, located at the rear, the cream coloured edifice before you gives nothing away of what lies beyond. There’s the detail in the vertical screens that fold away, but they merely hint at a subtle continuation mirrored inside. ‘Organic’ is definitely a buzzword throughout this home. There are rounded walls in the foyer that greets visitors, and circular motifs are continued in the nearmodular coffee lounge, in the stunning spiral staircase even on the roof. It’s a succession of rooms that flow into one another. In the first lounge, Knoll Platner side chairs and mercury light fittings by Artemide Skydro Soffitto further emphasise the fluid form of the home. Moving closer to the staircase, a secret is revealed,

ABOVE: The mercury light fittings by Artemide Skydro Soffitto and round Knoll Platner side chairs further emphasise the fluid form of the modern home
namely that within lies a touch of luxury in the form of a triple volume glass lift. An LED metal pendant light by Quasar Citadel lives inside, its circular design again aiding flow even in an area where movement comes in strictly straight lines. The kitchen hides away behind a victory for minimalist design - its colours neutral and calming. Throughout the home, the vertical screens first seen outside are employed once more, acting like a rich seam of gold that runs through every area of this most luxurious design scheme. The ground floor’s span is completed with a barbecue deck, dining area, walk-in wine room, shower and a pool and lawn terrace. But the view out across the bay will be the focal point. Up on the second floor, further vertical screens lead to the main bedroom. Here, the most impressive internal 136 Bridge for Design Summer 2017
view of the bay is achieved, and this is true when it comes to the specially placed bath tub, which offers 180 degree views. Two smaller bedrooms, a playroom, guest room and a further comfy lounge make up the remainder of this level. The third floor was of course the one that was added during ARRCC’s renovation. It’s here where the gym, sauna (again with bay view), study, spa and chiller bath are found, along with some of the most uninterrupted views of downtown Cape Town. Using furniture from internationally renowned names, in keeping with the lines of the interior, but never once forgetting the heritage of the home or the views it benefits from; ARRCC have got the careful reformulation of this bay view home just right.

TROVE OF TILES With a wealth of vintage influences and artefacts, La Minervetta Hotel escapes clichés of Italian history WORDS CÉCILE VAIARELLI | PHOTOGRAPHS BERNARD TOUILLON/COTE SUD
D
esigner Marco De Luca says he wanted to create a world of his own for a hotel in Sorrento, on the Sorrentine Pensinsula. La Minervetta Hotel, which has long been associated with his family, infuses the modern with the traditional better than any other building he’s been involved in, he says. With a wealth of vintage influences and artefacts from across Marco’s career contained within it, the hotel manages to escape the clichés of Italian history while still retaining something of the aura of the area in which its located. The hotel’s situation is perfection. It perches atop a cliff edge with a view of the famous Mount Vesuvius, right on the bay of Naples. In fact, the whole of the Sorrentine peninsula is laced with coves like this, with many planted with citrus trees that add extra charm to the ancient shores. But La Minervetta Hotel does not necessarily feel like a holiday resort. Better still, it
gives off the air of a private home. Beneath it, the busy harbour town ticks along, its daily life keeping the area feeling alive. Inside the restaurant, the decoration - chosen by Marco, for this building once owned by his grandfather - is one of azure blues, set in a chic, largely 1950s, style. The hotel itself is in something of the boutique style, with a modest 12 rooms. All of these face the sea, but beyond them lie arcades and salons, alongside the kitchen, dining room and terrace of La Minervetta’s heart. In fact, you can see the ocean and shades of blue from all perspectives of the hotel. Sweeping flights of stairs lead from the rooms to the terraced gardens and the swimming pool beyond. Tiling was a key element of the design at the hotel for Marco. Turquoise and chequerboard patterns add a playful quality, while the bathrooms take deeper blues perhaps of deeper seas - for their main tone.

OPPOSITE: A small swimming pool has been built into the terrace overlooking the port and the bay of Naples RIGHT: Blue and white wall and floor tiles in stripes and checks in the kitchen perpetuate the coastal theme of the hotel’s design
Notable is an outdoor shower shed with - again - chequerboard tiles, made up of antique pieces framed within a turquoise and deep blue frieze, by Atelier Vietri Scotto. Located just a few kilometres away in the small town of Vietri, a team of ceramic craftsmen have been hard at work, creating pieces for the hotel for Marco to use. The tiling in the kitchen is again by Vietri Scotto, with the china plates from Studio Mattea of Caltagirone. Marco says he decided from early on that colour would be the determining element of his hotel design. In his work, he often builds ideas from his own crayon or pastel sketches after discussions with clients, and the same was true of this hotel.
The furnishings have also been equally carefully planned out. The chairs in the restaurant, for example, came originally from a hotel on the coast of Amalfi. The 1950s style is continued in the décor throughout La Minervetta, and Marco believes it was vital to reflect the Neapolitan history of the region. There are lots of books, old cups, curios, trinkets in many shapes, sizes and colours which all add further personality to the hotel’s interior. However, the design doesn’t stop sharply after the 1950s. There are also ceramic items from the 1970s, vases from architects such as Ettore Sottsass and Gaetano Pesce, again all sourced by Marco. In the reception room, two Warren Platner armchairs in bright Bridge for Design Summer 2017 141

red invite you to sit, where the aforementioned vases are also placed extremely well. Over in the dining room, bedded on a sea of azure tiles, are vintage 1950s chairs. Finally, Marco says friends as well as family have helped his work on this particular job. Serenella Andolfi and Rosalinda Acampora, a painter, created the representations of an incandescent Vesuvius and lucky charm in the hotel, as well as the marine motifs on the plates that were specially drawn for the restaurant. Marco remembers that, as a boy, he would marvel at the pretty things for sale in the window of his mother’s shop, and the fascination has carried over into his design work - and one of his most personal commissions. La Minervetta, then, is a shop window for both Marco’s skill at design and the love he clearly has for the building. 142 Bridge for Design Summer 2017

Wilson Kerr is not just an owner of this renovated Scottish country house, he also feels like its guardian WORDS DOMINIC BRADBURY | PHOTOGRAPHS MARK LUSCOMBE-WHYTE
W
ilson Kerr and Arne Henriksen purchased a very large 18th Century country retreat in the Scottish Borders more than a decade ago. At the time, worried friends warned them it would be a money pit, with the holes in the roof letting in the all-too common rain of the region. In fact, the ninebedroom property, sitting in over 20 acres of gardens and woodland, needed more than a little TLC. Kerr says that the original intention was to make the home into a retirement retreat for later on in the pair’s life, albeit by taking a leisurely decade to complete it. The building had been in the same family for over 150 years, and had become tired, he explains. It was built in 1755, and sits on a promontory in South-west Scotland, with extremely desirable views.
The architect is now at the end of his ten year plan and thankfully, the renovation is complete. However, tragically Henriksen died of cancer in 2006 and never saw the end results. Kerr took on the challenge himself, with a feeling of wanting to do justice to both the home and his departed partner. He felt it was what he would have wanted, having started the project as a couple. The pair previously lived between Notting Hill and a country cottage in Suffolk, and during their time there, they built up an impressive collection of traditional-style Arts & Craft furniture. They knew the rugged landscape of Scotland would be their next destination, but didn’t know exactly where in the country they would settle. Bizarrely, they knew they wanted just four bedrooms and two acres - bizarre because of

the size of the home they eventually chose. Both said they were ‘seduced’ by the massive home and its amazing views. The original owner had been an architect too, but even until the exchange of contracts Kerr and Henriksen were expecting the sale to fall through, and were delighted when they became owners of their own Georgian dream. 146 Bridge for Design Summer 2017
After structural repairs and work on the gardens (which open annually for the local school and church), attention turned to the indoors. The restoration was aided by the fact most of the fireplaces, shutters and other original features remained. Dry rot reared its ugly head, and some floorboards were replaced, but Kerr went to great lengths

Of the rooms completed after Henriksen’s death, the morning room and dining room are easily the most colourful. The morning room even features a rug designed by Kerr, in a move towards something more light and whimsical. the house, despite it not having any direct influence from his partner. The most notable thing about it is the way it exists as a sharp contrast to the more traditional feel of the rest of the house. However, the biggest investment in the house was the chandelier in the drawing-room, which Kerr gave to Henriksen for his 50th birthday. And so, through it all, what began as a steadfast goal 150 Bridge for Design Summer 2017
to make a retirement home then evolved into something that would honour the memory of the deceased. And the pair, perhaps Kerr specifically, did exactly what they set out to. They met their goal. Kerr now says that, with a house like this, he feels as much guardian as owner. But more importantly, he has given it back a life.

BEACHFRONT

Dorothee Junkin’s client was keen to get away from any clichéd beach house look, achieving a European vibe WORDS JAKE KENNEDY | PHOTOGRAPHS WILLIAM WALDRON

orothee Junkin’s new design has set a high benchmark for beachside living. In one of her largest domestic projects she’s utilised contrasts, exterior influences - and a huge celebration of light to dramatic effect. A weekend retreat on the coastline of Florida required a grander thought process from designer Dorothee Junkin than usual. A massive thought process, in fact. Because the house on the ocean front is over 18,000 sq.ft. So there was plenty of scope - perhaps even too much - for something grand. However, the potential excited Dorothee rather than daunting her, she says. She knew she needed to move fast as work had already begun on the home when she got involved. Whereas usually there would be the time to plan things like plumbing, electric and
landscaping; in this case she was presented with a work already in progress, with builders and machinery on site. Dorothee had experience of this way of working. She was involved in a five star hotel in the Abu Dhabi World Trade Center mall, and Munich’s Lenbachhaus museum (while she worked at Foster & Partners in London). Understandably though, the parameters of making a home for someone at this scale are different from a commercial property. Attention to detail was key, as was liaison with the client herself, leading to in-depth discussions about materials and furniture used, Dorothee remembers. The client herself was keen to get away from any clichéd beach house look, preferring a more European approach. This is

perhaps most evident in the living room, with the client’s favoured shade of copper picked up in the soft furnishings, which definitely have a European twist. Dorothee went on to mix designs by B&B Italia, Christian Liaigre and Porta Romana with her own bespoke pieces and classics by Herman Miller. The result is well measured and gels perfectly. She summarises the home’s style as ‘contemporary elegance with international influences,’ with lighting and textures helping to create a flow through the home. The 50-metre long living room is dominated by a waterfall-like splash of LED lighting, a vast piece created by the designer in collaboration with architectural lighting expert, Sharon Marston of London. The fitting was sent to the new home in 20 pieces, and later constructed on site. The deck area continues the celebration of the home’s ocean location, and the centrepiece light installation in the living room is even visible from the beach - making for a real talking point for passers by, especially at night. 156 Bridge for Design Summer 2017
Back inside, a central fireplace in the family room features a chimney that works as yet another bold centerpiece in an already bold home. Its sculptural quality is mirrored by two pieces to the left, while a painting to the right enhances the hallway beyond it. But it’s back to grand lighting statements by the time you reach the formal dining room. An installation here created in collaboration with Swarovski uses an astonishing sixty candles. Yet the key to this room’s success is its absorption

of the outdoors, with its views of a courtyard filled with tropical fauna and traditional wooden longboats. From even these rooms alone, it’s clear the home has proved lighting is vital for it to work so well. But texture, Dorothee believes, was another important element. In one guest bedroom, there are layers of white on top of neutral colours (and a bespoke bed), while in the master bedroom, silk and steel are used together for contrast. Dorothee also explains 158 Bridge for Design Summer 2017
that the ripples in the wallpaper mimic the ocean waves outside, and the flames from the fireplace she installed provide another neat contrast. For the kitchen, the Italian space’s black tones are picked out with bronze fittings, but the hard surfaces are balanced by the soft upholstery of the stools. There is more than meets the eye here too, with a butler’s pantry squirreled away behind one wall, and many of the preparation areas lurking behind the bar.

Dorothee’s next project will be in Manhattan, she says, in a space that, while generous, is not quite on the same scale as this Florida retreat. But ‘quality not quantity’ is always a valuable motto, she believes, and it’s worked even at this impressive scale. 160 Bridge for Design Summer 2017

ISLAND

This Mykonos villa manages to exist on an extremely cosmopolitan island but never feels hurried or busy WORDS VASSILIKI BARBA | PHOTOGRAPHS YIORGOS KORDAKIS

he Greek island of Mykonos is one of the most cosmopolitan in the region, and many deem it their favourite. Nestled within 31,000 square metres amid rocks and rough vegetation, one stone house bursts forth that warrants more than a little investigation. Mykonos is often referred to as the ‘island of winds,’ but the Summer months are really only half of its story. Many settle here all year round, having fallen in love with the perfect climate, plant life, scenery and architecture. Built out of a single storey, it perches on the rocks of the shore that joins the sandy Kalafati beach with the one of Lia. Despite its size, it’s largely hidden from view with the matching colour of the stone used in the building’s construction naturally aiding in this illusion. A suburban home, the view from the veranda is a veritable who’s who of classic Greek islands, taking in the Cyclades in a broad sweep - Naxos, Donousa, Paros and Antiparos are all visible from here. In fact, the view encompasses an area spanning 20 nautical miles. Structurally, the home is very well planned. The gusty nickname for the island perhaps acted as a warning for the architect, Dimitris Rizos, as the high rocks around the house offer a form of shelter from the Summer breezes that could otherwise sweep through. This means that even in the PREVIOUS PAGE: The garden leads down to the infinity pool that has its own man-made beach and spectacular views over the Aegean sea LEFT: Large turquoise ceramic urns and contemporary photographs by Zuang Houan beside a grand piano in the entrance hall ABOVE: The exterior of the modern villa seen from below the rocky outcrop Bridge for Design Summer 2017 165

cooler months the veranda is perfectly usable. Moving inside, the off-white colour of the home is found in both the walls and the marble floors. Sinks and showers follow suit, and grey window frames complement the colour scheme well. Note that the owners have chosen not to obscure the priceless view with curtains or blinds - a smart move. Yet despite being inside, the feeling of the outside, and the rocks, continues. The kitchen is built on them, and in the bedroom a bath appears less like a place for lounging, and more like a lagoon. Furniture is few and far between, as if letting the rooms speak for themselves. However, there is a 166 Bridge for Design Summer 2017
striking white outsize sofa, a coffee table made of old solid bricks and iron and a grand piano that dominates in the living room, bringing a monotone feel to it. These are all signature pieces in their own way, and they work extremely well together. One way the home does scream for attention is via its artworks, which really give off the feel of a modern, urban gallery. Greek and foreign artists alike compete on each wall, with works including those of Pavlos, A. Georgiou, Katis, Tuan Huan, Olafur Eliasson, Vanessa Beecroft and more, sharing their daily life with the owners. Equally impressive is the cartoon like artwork out on the veranda by

Pavlopoulos, which shows the family of the owners in a humorous, lighthearted style. Back outside, and on the north facing wall, the owners have planted a small Mexican garden with cacti. Then, just a short distance away, a small Cycladic church with multi-coloured murals has been built which works sweetly alongside the main bulk of the home. The remainder of the vegetation consists of mostly Greek plants of the Cyclades that are able to thrive des`pite the often strong Etesian winds of the region. Finally, comes the grand swimming pool. Architect Rizos has provided an impressive place for splashing 168 Bridge for Design Summer 2017
around in; it runs down through the natural rocks and is cast from cement mortar that has been coloured in the same shade as the island’s sand. This gives the impression of a beach that has been reinforced by the hardy fauna of the region. Arguably, it’s really the location of the home that is its greatest strength, something which the owners believe. It manages to exist in an extremely cosmopolitan area, but never feels to be hurried. The Aegean lies just beside, continually inviting you to dip into it, and - almost at any time of the year - this home has something amazing to offer its visitors.

VILLA
MASSEI
The whimsical gardens are a picture postcard image of Tuscany WORDS HELENA ATTLEE | PHOTOGRAPHS ALEX RAMSAY
T
he history of the gardens and grounds surrounding a lodge, or villa in Lucca, Tuscany, stretches back for Centuries. Originally a 16th Century hunting lodge belonging to a family called Sinibadi, nestled high in the woodland hills of the region, the home is long and low, and now boasts some of the most beautiful contemporary gardens in the whole of Italy. In 1700 the last Count of Sinibaldi left the house to his nephew, Marchese Massei, and gifted the home a name. Fast-forward over 200 years, and the villa came into the ownership of a local doctor, before changing hands comparatively regularly over the next half Century. RIGHT: The manicured lawns framed by clipped box hedges lead the eye towards a pergola at the far end of ‘the old garden’ ABOVE: The Villa Massei was built in the 16th Century as a hunting lodge for a Lucchese family and was restored in 1982

In 1982, Californians Paul Gervais and Gil Cohen found the home in a slightly less than perfect state. Even the aged Cyprus trees at the front of the home and the plants on its walls seemed to be competing against it, obscuring and occasionally eating into it. The pair admitted they had little experience of matters horticultural. Nevertheless, after many decades of tweaking, nurturing and out and out hard graft, the gardens at Villa Massei have become something of the picture postcard image of Tuscany. Arriving through the village, the villa appears partially shaded at first to anyone arriving there. A grass track slopes up through trees, to reveal rows of valerian, lavender and wisteria. The front terrace, which Paul planted, is very much a meditative space. Pots of lemons and sharply pruned yew cones welcome visitors to the house’s front door. LEFT: The brick pergola is smothered with Rosa ‘Claire Jacquier’ and underplanted with box hedging and neatly clipped shrubs ABOVE: A cascade of white wisteria creates a backdrop for a flowerbed and a clipped orange tree Bridge for Design Summer 2017 173
ABOVE: Stout double doors framed by box hedging in the shape of an arch herald the entrance to the garden. Two planters sit either side of the eye-catching door
Where once a bare and unsightly wall would have overpowered this view, now trunks of cypresses and other mature trees thrive in front of it. These are also masked by shrubs, in the form of Pittosporums (Pittosporum Tobira), mock orange (Philadelphus Coronius) and even vintage roses. Lavender, Russian sage and stone benches complete this serene area. When Paul and Gil first arrived at Villa Massei a huge cedar tree shaded the lawn’s end. However, this died away, and it was only after a trip to Iran two years after that Paul was inspired to plant four Japanese crab apples (Malus floribunda) at the centre of the lawn’s 174 Bridge for Design Summer 2017
furthest reaches, with a traditional Tuscan oil jar placed artfully between them. Beyond these lies the pergola, which is a recent addition. On it’s beams grow Rosa Claire Jacquier, which were purchased in Britain. The entrance to it features yet more pots, this time designed by Paul himself - and they have been so successful in fact that he has gone on to sell them to other gardeners. The bench was also designed by Paul. Beyond the pergola the ground rises to the Tuscan woodland, and there is an avenue of Prunus Reine du Marché, a dessert cherry that flowers in March.

ABOVE: The clean green lines of the box par terre are unbroken by any additional planting creating an interesting maze-like geometric pattern seen from above
Around these are wild flowers, some native, others imported from other parts of the garden over the years. There are ragged robin and the indigo tassel grape hyacinth (Muscari comosum), as well as camassias and wild orchids. Between the cherry walk and the villa itself, Paul has been creative by making an ornamental parterre. Unusually, he left the beds here empty, resulting in a most satisfying effect of calming green tones. Down the steps from the parterre, an area behind the 176 Bridge for Design Summer 2017
villa hides a camphor tree which is believed to be over 200 years old. Despite getting somewhat over involved in the home’s foundation and pipework over the years, and being somewhat over generous when shedding its leaves, Paul says the aged tree can still happily co-exist with the home itself. Plus, it provides some shade. In fact, thirty guests have previously sheltered under it for one particularly memorable meal, he says. A tunnel of white wisteria links the house to the grotto, where water flows from 16th Century masks on

the walls inside. The roof here was replaced after a beam collapsed, and the original lead pipework, astonishingly, still remains - and works! It’s said that you can tell a lot about a homeowner from the garden. This would definitely appear to be true in this case. From the family lodge of Centuries ago, to an element of charming deterioration and then on to a more tidy, whimsical place that only Paul and Gil could have created, Villa Massei is the sum of over 350 years of influence and usage, the culmination of years of love, and maybe a touch of trial and error. 178 Bridge for Design Summer 2017

INCE our long history began, we have diversified into different markets and products, as the craftsmanship was handed down from generation to generation. Our introduction into the interiors market happened in the late 1970’s and the natural progression of fabrics led the way into soft furnishings and window treatment, which is where we stand today. One thing that has never changed, however, is our bespoke approach: we have always been made-to-measure.
