ECLECTIC INTERIORS A successful eclectic interior should reflect the life and taste of the owner

n the middle of the Buckland area of Atlanta, a home designed for a couple by Bill Musso from Musso Design Group became a project that took in the building’s history, as well as accommodating the very different personalities of the pair. The couple had very different backgrounds, with the wife having grown up in Spain and France, while the husband was native to that part of America. There was also a slight age difference between them, and a mish-mash of styles that took in the contemporary and the traditional. Added in to this melting pot was the discovery of the home’s original plans, dating back over 20 years. Only found after the pair had lived in the house for five years, they revealed that there were

major changes in the home that were not part of the original plans. The next step was to contact the original architects and ask them to bring the house back to what was originally intended, but with a nod to modern living. The husband and wife team contacted designer Bill Musso who’s work they had admired at a friend’s home, and a team was then in place. The collaboration was a great success. There had to be a lot of give and take in the design because of the differing tastes - and not just from the homeowners. There was also compromise between the designers and the architects, Spitzmiller & Norris. The latter are classicists, while Bill Musso admitted he lent towards the more contemporary style. The result was

a real boundary pusher, and a ‘one of a kind’ home. Many of the pieces in the home were designed specifically for it, or were modified from their original dimensions to fit better in the space. But in addition to the aesthetic being a pleasing one, the new home and its furnishings needed to provide comfort. The husband made it clear that ‘comfort was king,’ and there are many custom pieces, from fireplace surrounds to Japanese charring methods (known as sho-sugi-ban) on the beams and doors. Additionally, the team experimented with the use of new countertop materials that were brand new

to the region, called Neolith. Elsewhere, the family room connects to the screened porch, and the two rooms become one when the doors between them open, creating a wonderfully light filled space. The resulting home lead to friendships between Bill Musso and the client, and this project was considered such a success that they have agreed to collaborate once more, this time on a pool house to replace the existing one.

itzrovia, a pair of penthouses in London’s Rathbone Square, have just been unveiled by developers Great Portland Estates (GPE). Providing a feeling of sanctuary in central London, and yet situated just 150 metres from the new Crossrail hub at Tottenham Court Road Station, the properties offer the opportunity to experience ‘living in one of the capital’s most connected and vibrant neighbourhoods and includes a residence by visionary design studio, Echlin,’ GPE says. The former Royal Mail sorting office is one of the first public squares to be opened up in central London for more than 100 years.

Comprising two duplexes located on the seventh and eighth floors, each light-filled home has been crafted and features double height ceilings, floor to ceiling windows with far reaching panoramas and rare outdoor space. In the first interior Echlin created, spanning 2,900 square foot, an elegantly crafted spiral staircase, flooded with natural light from the skylight above, leads upstairs to the main living and entertaining space with an adjoining kitchen and access to southerly and northern facing terraces. Completing this floor is a spacious master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom and walk-in dressing room and

two further bedrooms, one of which could be used as a study. On the lower floor, there are two spacious double bedrooms, one en suite, and both bedrooms open onto a sizeable balcony. The interiors focus on British craft and are influenced by the building’s central, cosmopolitan location and its heritage, with a colour palette of blues, greens, nudes and chalky whites, along with materials such as linen, velvet and leather. Modern, classic and vintage pieces adorn the penthouse from Julian Chichester, Ochre and The New Craftsmen. There are a number of British made bespoke items such as furniture designed by Echlin and a striking hanging mobile by Corrie Williamson. In the kitchen, Echlin partnered with British ceramicist John Julian to showcase a curated selection of his work. In the second penthouse, there is an open plan kitchen, dining and living space with a double height ceiling and access to a terrace. The master bedroom on the upper floor features his and hers dressing rooms and a sumptuous

bathroom with freestanding bath. There are two further bedrooms with dressing rooms and en suite bathrooms and an optional fourth bedroom or study. Both properties come complete with contemporary custom designed kitchens featuring state-of-the-art Gaggenau appliances and Calacatta marble worktop, walk-in wardrobes, ambient integrated lighting, comfort cooling and under floor heating. Graham Longman, Project Architect at Make Architects, concludes: ‘The residential properties are a crucial part of Rathbone Square. It’s the vibrant mix of uses around the beautiful square that give Rathbone its character and make it such a great new addition to Fitzrovia. The penthouses are completely individual, grounded into the architectural language of the development, which flows inside and out and gives the scheme its unique identity. TENT CITY Steve Hoedemaker and Tim Pfeiffer were asked to redesign a waterfront property near Seattle with the aim for it to host roughly 40 family members and friends. project on Whidbey Island in Washington, 30 miles North of Seattle has been lovingly nicknamed ‘tent city’. What’s more, it’s recently proven what can be achieved when designers and architects focus on their strengths, defy convention and take a few risks with a project. To enable the home’s redesign to encompass a campsite like feel, designers Hoedemaker Pfeiffer went to lengths to make room for a selection of grand indoor spaces for gatherings, with outdoor spaces for taking the sun and views or gathering around the fire of an evening. Bedrooms were out,

replaced instead by a collection of wall tents that simultaneously lose nothing in luxury but gain everything in the connection to the great outdoors. The demolition process could have been more extensive still. Presented with a collection of architectural decisions that spanned many decades and styles, it appeared at first there was nothing worth saving of the house. However, modesty prevailed, coupled with a desire to make use of existing resources, the team suggested eliminating only the most ordinary parts of the building, leaving the original 1920s beach

cabin and the 1970s great room. The remaining bedrooms, a bathroom, a laundry room, mudroom and garage all went, leaving space for the iconic collection of wall tents and various camp areas. The wall tents provide for year-round sleeping, benefiting from simple electric heaters for colder nights. In four tents, there is room for eight guests, with room for an additional six in the great room. The furniture throughout was sourced from up and down the West Coast with additional pieces sourced from Asia and the East Coast. A 1920s cottage was reimagined, becoming a camp style dining hall with its own beach stone fireplace, kitchen and camp style bath. The 1970s

great room was completely cleaned up. A sleeping loft was added and the fireplace was rebuilt to create a room that’s part Pacific Coast park lodge with a little bit of Tofino surf chic. The sense of camp and community is reinforced outside with a great deck facing the water and a fire pit out back out of the wind for cooler nights. The camp bathroom provides for simultaneous use of showers, toilets, and sinks without compromising privacy, and an additional outdoor sink makes tooth brushing by starlight a breeze. Pure camping bliss.

I
f you’re looking for a holiday villa or second home in Italy - the real Italy - a new luxury villa website is aiming to ‘make exquisite living in the heart of Italy a dream come true,’ says Rob Landeweerd and Jeroen Macco, founders of the Special Umbria website. The pair have travelled extensively around Italy since the 1990s and, thanks to a close friend, had the pleasure of visiting Città della Pieve in the Umbrian hills on one such occasion. This sparked their motivation to buy a house of their own in the region. In 2007, they decided to leave Holland and move to Italy, bravely leaving their business careers

behind, to buy a property in the ‘green heart’ landlocked Italian region of Umbria, a treasure trove for old stone farmhouses. The pair consulted local property agents and visited numerous houses before choosing a plot of land in Piegaro, near Lake Trasimeno, and building their dream home. A combination of project management and designing with their love for Italy led to the Special Umbria site being born. Rob and Jeroen started off managing and renovating clients’ second homes in Umbria, which led to them renting out exclusive villas and apartments and subsequently acting as property finders themselves.

Today, Special Umbria’s office is located next to the pair’s three-bedroom farmhouse, which sits in the hills near Città della Pieve, surrounded by 3500 square metres of gardens with a pool, vegetable garden, 50 olive trees and fruit trees, with breathtaking views of the Umbrian countryside. The interior décor is warm and nothing if not eclectic. Rob and Jeroen have dressed it with pieces of art by Hendrik Kerstens, Alessandro Papetti, Fons van Laar, amongst many more, and mixed these with Dutch, Italian and English furniture. There are wood and glass cupboards from an old Italian church, a Dutch chandelier above the

fireplace, and an Italian antique chest of drawers, each restored by local craftsmen and upholstered in colourful Italian fabrics. The sofas are now covered in Rubelli velvet and Zoffany fabric, there are red and yellow felt Vitra poufs, and a small footstool covered in Pierre Frey fabric. The rustic style kitchen features a handmade cotto tiled floor, a marble worktop with a butler sink carved from the same marble, and wooden cupboards and shelves made by a local carpenter. An antique Umbrian wooden table sits in the middle of the kitchen with Hay chairs and hanging pendant lights by Muuto. Bursts of colour are added across

the house with handmade lampshades designed by Dutch company Gezusters Stoop. Special Umbria now has 100 properties on its books, and their interiors are a mix of traditional Umbrian style and 21st Century living. Rob likes to mix things up a bit by pairing high street brands such as Zara Home with high end designers such as Missoni, as well as vintage pieces sourced from markets. In fact, Rob, Jeroen and their team pride themselves on the level of attention to detail each property is given, overseeing every step of the journey. ‘We concluded 2007, the year we built the house,

signing the final deed at the notary followed by a big celebratory ‘pranzo’, or lunch, at the house for all the workmen who had done such a wonderful job on our dream - having our own property and new beginnings in Umbria had come true!’ says Rob, adding: ‘In the medieval hilltop villages and Apennine peaks, among the vines and olives, there are abandoned stone houses waiting to be renovated - it’s our turn to make other’s Italian dream a reality…’

stunning corner of the Bay of Cannes in the South of France, a region known for its sweeping ocean views seen from luxury homes perched on the hilltops, is so similar to those in the sunshine state of California that locals have taken to calling the area ‘Californie’. Not all the homes there were making the most of the views, however. One particular space required a complete rebuild from Anthony Collett, co-founder of Collett-Zarzycki, the architectural and interior design firm. He was initially met with a home he described as being completely anonymous, one that could have been anywhere on the globe - so little was it making of the grand surroundings. Anthony and his team were tasked with rebuilding the home to take full advantage of these natural benefits. their best, and needed a place that would allow him to do this. Collett-Zarzycki worked with local architectural practice, Collection Privée, to create the seven-bedroom family house, in a project which took 18 months to complete. Understandably, and most obviously, the issue of the non-existent sea views needed to be addressed first. The new property, a linear building, was therefore positioned to have major spaces that would look straight onto the beautiful Southern climes. Benefiting from its location on a steep slope, the new home is set back on the hillside and has been designed over two levels, allowing for ample ceiling height on both floors. Another key design alteration was to give every room in the house natural light and ventilation. This wasn’t easy. The close proximity of an

immoveable cliff edge directly behind the home meant that was a regular task. The issue was resolved by designing a multitude of courtyard spaces that would bring light, air and the occasional water feature right into the heart of the building. ‘There’s a sense of surprise when you encounter the shafts of light from the courtyards above, penetrating the floor-plan from another level. It lends a certain magic to one’s experience of the home,’ says Anthony, who worked with his colleague Olive Jobst on the redesign. An added advantage of the home’s flat roofs was to camouflage the house into the surroundings, along with olive trees and aromatic rosemary hedges. What really makes this property special however is its effortless melding of Eastern and Western influences. The clients, who are of Muslim faith,

requested that some Arabic motifs be incorporated in the predominantly classic contemporary design scheme of the new home. The space now emphasises pale muted colours and simple architectural forms throughout. Subtle references to the client’s origins can be seen in the Arabesque pattern in the central courtyard you first arrive into, in the ornate balustrade which lends to the main upper floor terraces and the domed ceiling in

the entrance hall, with its small star-shaped cutouts which add further natural light to the room. Anthony is enthusiastic about the use of these touches throughout the home, adding that it has been an ongoing influence for him professionally. ‘Middle Eastern architecture has always influenced not only myself but the whole of Western architecture,’ he says. ‘We haven’t tried to create a pastiche, but instead endeavoured to absorb

some cultural aspects and represent them in a contemporary manner,’ he adds. The result is a beautiful home that manages to retain a sense of intimacy in its grandeur, and proves there is an ability to carve out seclusion while living in a space that’s carefully linked. For the best example of this, look no further than the arrangement of the areas that make up the family room, the internal courtyard and the large

loggia terrace which overlooks the pool and the view of the Bay of Cannes - something which was previously not even celebrated by the space. As Anthony concludes, ‘Each space has its own identity, but they all weld together in a home that is spacious, interesting, intimate but majestic.’

ocated on a busy road in the city of Panchkula in India, a home that has become known as the Pool House was recently designed for an elderly couple and their visiting family and friends by architect Ar Badrinath Kaleru and the Studio Ardete design team. The brief was to visualise a house that exuded comfort and was designed for relaxation and leisure, and to apply these principals to the nearly 5,000 square metre dwelling. Completed last year, the main concept behind the home was to place emphasis on its courtyard and pool areas, with these acting as the focal point of the entire space. The faรงade has been designed in two individual spaces. A screen comprising of vertical members reduces visual contact with the busy street that lies just outside the home, at the same time allowing the occupants to have a view of the trees which line the road just across from it. Another defined space has been created by the staircase facade, which is clad in dark grey textured stone. rectangular voids have been created in this to break up the mass, and this adds a sense of lightness. These windows have been fitted with reflective glasses to add a sculptural dimension to the wall. A water feature located near the entrance to the home sets a tranquil tone for the interiors that lie beyond. The feeling of light conjured by these windows continues inside the home, where transparent walls have been used to interconnect the various

spaces and to link them to the outdoors. The sitting room, which is located at the front of the house, is designed as an extension of the landscape outside, with the cantilevered roof reinforcing the connection of the inside to the out. The transparent walls serve a further purpose here, neatly accentuating the presence of the swimming pool from different areas of the house. The main staircase and what are called the

wellness areas have been cleverly connected to the rest of the spaces in the home via the courtyard, which again establishes a correlation between the inside and the out, something which is extremely important when you bear in mind the wide variation of temperatures which occur in this part of the world. The colour, texture and material palettes of the Poolyard House have intentionally been kept subtle too, with the use of wood and stone capturing the eye. Elsewhere, colourful artworks contrast against the toned down ambience of the interiors. The lighting has been fitted taking into consideration individual

spaces and their varying functionality. Quirky fixtures that draw attention and bind the elements of the space together have been used, while natural light filters in from the double height courtyard, illuminating the spaces inside during the daytime. Finally, the swimming pool on the first floor, which can be seen from many areas of the home, has become the nucleus of the house and of course lends the entire project its name.

CHINTZ Designer Tom Scheerer was tasked with redecorating a Mediterranean Revival villa on Jupiter Island on Florida’s South coast. The clients were a couple with three grown children who wanted a more informal, comfortable home PHOTOGRAPHS WILLIAM WALDRON
D
esigner Tom Scheerer recently revived a mansion on Jupiter Island on Florida’s south coast. An extremely golf-friendly area, residences in the region could be considered something of a throwback to a simpler America. Certainly it has a distinct identity. Tom was tasked with redecorating a Mediterranean Revival villa for a couple and their three grown children. The house had been in the wife’s family since the 1850s, but neither she nor her husband wanted the chintz of the area to find its way into the redesign, instead preferring something informal. The house has a Spanish personality, right down to an atrium pool and its columns. High ceilings give the rooms a chapel-like calm and the small rooms have a quirky feel. Though much of the original place was torn down, the architect stocked the new wings and adjacent two-story guesthouse with nostalgia. A guesthouse suite lies at the top of an outdoor staircase while a guest bedroom has an outside entrance, but also can be reached by heading to the master suite, walking through a bathroom, and opening a secret door. the rooms in the house are linked, each opening into the next, rather than being formally separated by corridors and halls. For a colour scheme, Tom used sophisticated neutrals - warm cream, sandy beige and lacquer brown - with bold dashes of blue, green and yellow, in debt to the surrounding subtropical landscape. The dining room features a table with Baroquestyle dolphin base designed by the French firm Ramsay. A 1960s wicker bedroom suite that had been in the house for decades was split up, and walls were sheathed in sheets of bark paper. Darkstained floors are found in first-floor rooms. Pecky

cypress, a pockmarked native wood was used to panel the dining room. The exaggerated proportions of some of the rooms inspired the designer to play up the spatial drama. Birds in prints bring a touch of wildlife, while the tight confines of a powder room pop their visual boundaries by virtue of a wallpaper whose Chinese-style fretwork makes the tiny space look like an extravagant parakeet’s cage. ‘It’s all about comfort, with a bit of spice,’ Tom concludes.

nterior designer Anthony Collett still remembers the feeling, 30 years ago, when he set eyes on a derelict Italian 17th Century farmhouse with no water or electricity. He knew it would need a lot of work, but saw potential. The home looks down over a 270-degree panorama of beautiful Tuscan landscape, with the city of Lucca below, so there was appeal despite the years of work ahead. Anthony and his wife, knitwear designer Julia Pines, wanted their three youngest children to have the carefree, outdoor childhood he’d enjoyed. The house, a stone-rubble construction with a pantile roof and the date 1630 carved into a

keystone, had been derelict for 30 years. Anthony wanted the builders he was using to understand that the house should look as though it had always been there, and not follow straight lines. He insisted no trowels were used on the walls. Instead, a granular mortar was applied using a hessian bag, a technique employed by its 17th Century builders. Inside, traditional local materials were kept too, from terracotta tiles to massive wooden beams. The living room itself was originally a barn, but is now bright with paintings and a stone arch. There are wooden steamer chairs with cushions in bright fabrics, Moroccan rugs spread over weathered tiles, an ancient Italian cupboard, Indian temple lights

in brightly coloured glass and an old wooden hen coop - again Indian - used for storage. In the kitchen, the strap hinges cupboards are hand forged, as is a giant metal hoop from which Arts and Crafts lanterns hang above a tall, chunky table designed by Anthony. The kitchen tops are made from thick Carrara stone, and the divisions between the cupboards are of plastered brick. The dining room is also simple, plain and rustic, with a cupboard and table of Anthony’s design, surrounded by stacking chairs. Upstairs, the four bedrooms with their beams and

terracotta floors are simple, their only decoration is the handwoven textiles used for bedspreads or bed curtains. Outside, the pool is hidden from the house, but vital to the family. Anthony is often in Italy for his work sourcing high quality marble, and when there, he says he makes a point of staying at the house, calling it the most peaceful place in the world.

HOMELY ART GALLERY Original features made the space work as a blank canvas for the client’s art collection
C
olaço & Graham, run by Michel Colaco and Francesca Graham, was approached by their client to help her with the redesign of this amazing apartment, located on Mount Street, Mayfair. The home has an understated classical feel and high ceilings, mouldings and Boiseries throughout. Working in collaboration with Brazilian Architect, Dayanne Cavalcanti, the pair realised how important art was for the client, with her amazing collection built up over years. As a result, the team’s starting point was to make the flat work like a gallery, but with more going on besides. Original structural features made the space work as a blank canvas, with art strategically displayed, yet it still retained a sense of being a home.
The majority of the furniture comes from wellknown Italian brands like B&B Italia, Minotti, Cassina and Poltrona Frau, following simple shapes and forms so as to not overshadow the art. The children’s passion for music is not forgotten, with a piano placed between living and dining areas. Proof that, despite its stunning artistic tendencies, this space remains a family home. Colaço & Graham says that it was a pleasure to work with this client as she had impeccable taste and a great eye.

MIXING OLD WITH NEW A couple in Dulwich Village wanted to update their home to become more modern
A
project in Dulwich Village undertaken for a family was one of those that went so well, both designer and clients became friends after the work had been completed. The client had a wealth of furniture which had been handed down as family heirlooms from the husband’s side of the family. The client wanted to keep it, along with the original features of the property, but for it to be updated with a more contemporary feel. It was important to the client that, in the extension to the rear of the property, wooden windows and doors would feature and that the colour would give it a more modern feel. They also had an original brick wall in the kitchen which they loved and so they wanted to replicate it in the new extension.
Everything in the office area was bespoke made, as well as the bench around the rounded part of the extension. The client had her own joiner she had worked with in the past, although the designer was happy to suggest their own preferred tradesmen if needed. ‘Working with the round corner was a real challenge as we wanted the seating area to follow the exact shape. In the end it has worked out very well,’ Gloria Sanchez, lead designer, explains. The client was so happy with the work, they have asked them to fit the master bedroom.

HOME FIT FOR FAMILY Vesta Design created a home perfect for the family to spend quality time together
V
esta Design recently furnished a penthouse apartment near Kensington High Street, focusing on furniture, accessories and artwork, with a brief to keep the space relaxed and family oriented. Relaxation was the buzzword throughout all rooms. The main living and dining area needed to be flexible and there needed to be a bar that doubled as a breakfast bar. The starting point for the fabric scheme was the navy velvet for the sofa chosen by the client. Vesta layered neutral cushions with textured fabrics and added a throw. There was a relaxed feel to the furniture and lighting too. Vesta used textured wood, leather, ceramic lamps and brass detailing, coming together to create a feel that was ‘curated but effortless.’
The master bedroom has a masculine feel, thanks to a monochrome colour palette. A deep buttoned, winged headboard and smart upholstered bench give a luxurious atmosphere while brass detailing on the furniture and accessories gives a contemporary edge. Finally, a child’s bedroom was needed that wasn’t ‘too girly’. A light headboard against a deep blue wall creates contrast against bright colours. The bold combination, and the patterns, create a playful bedroom for a young lady, perfect for relaxing with friends.

he driving force behind this Lake Waccabuc home redesign was Workshop/APD, a full-service architectural firm based in New York City that also specialises in interior design. This allowed a style and feel evident in both the interior and exterior of the home to develop, right down to light fixtures and throw pillows. The couple who own the home come from Manhattan but actually purchased it some years ago. The plan, as their children grew up, was to use it as it was, before redesigning it completely when they had left home. They wanted a place they could escape to at the weekend, and also to have friends and family visit from the city. The end result is a home that’s ideal for family getaways, is functional for entertaining and with a style all of its own. Designers at Workshop/APD admitted that a key influence for the project was a nearby restaurant, which was elegant yet somehow combined the old and the new. The property is surrounded by trees, with the back of it providing spectacular views of the Lake. construction began, so the team had to excavate a lot of stone, which would go on to be reused. The next step was to create vertical and open spaces with a lot of glass, so that the woods appeared to merge with the interior. The designers wanted it to feel as if the trees were engulfing the home, with the view of the lake the main focus. From floor to ceiling, everything in the home works together seamlessly. The design intentionally matches the architecture of the home, again a key part of the design team’s philosophy. The interior design was all about bringing in muted colors, textures, and patterns, the team believe, and also about building around a few authentic pieces and combining them with custom pieces and new items. Workshop/APD’s interior designer purchased some of the home’s décor pieces in antiques shops and other stores in the Hudson Valley. Other items were custom-made, like the living room’s Chamberlain Sofa, by Fresh Kills, and chairs by Jean Gillion, a Brazilian furniture maker. Other unique details were added throughout the home, including the hand-carved African pieces that hang on the sitting area’s wall. All of the materials, even the fabrics, were intended to have an authentic age to them, and none of the décor feels too shiny and new. It took a year and a half to build all the pieces and find the right ones for each space, the team explains. In addition to the three main living spaces, including the living room, family room, and kids’/ media room, there are three secondary nooks, to allow people the opportunity to do their own thing. The family wanted to be there on rainy, sunny and wintry days, and enjoy it all year long. But it would be the dining room that would become the heart of the home, nestled in between the family room and kitchen. Above the diningroom table hangs a statement light fixture from a Paris company named Design Heure, which fills the double height room and feels part of the overall design of the space.

By contrast, the kitchen’s design is one of understated elegance, although one that still provides the functionality of a chef ’s kitchen. Being centrally located, there needed to be some subtlety to its design, so the team settled on a ‘shiplap aesthetic’. They gave the kitchen three layers: a large island, the central kitchen, and another space behind that for storage. The windows were another driving force in the design of this home. Starting right at the front door and leading all the way through the house to the back, they are a focal point throughout. These were carefully considered wherever the scale changes, with smaller windows in the hideaway nooks and larger ones in the more spacious living areas. The front entrance is marked by an oversized solid-oak door, with everything around it glass. From here, you can see everything that’s going

on throughout the house, but the door makes it feel more private. Leading in, the first thing you see when you walk into the home is its massive staircase. The staircase was singled out for attention, alluding to the fact the home has three floors. This inside out is aided by the clever use of materials with a natural feel. The interior floors are all character-grade oak and were installed early on in construction, so that they would become more aged. This is often something that homeowners will try to avoid, but it works for the look and feel of this particular home. Similarly, on the outside, the team used custom-made white-oak shingles instead of cedar shingles, and the steel has a matte-

black patina to give it an aged quality. The design scheme extends to the outdoor living spaces, as well. New York City firm Gunn Landscape Architecture developed the master plan, merging the upper deck and lower-lawn areas, creating multiple terraces that give depth, again merging inside and out. Throughout the project, that guiding principle was achieved, as well as other happy pairings. The lake house brings functionality and style together, but also combined modern and vintage, old and new. Â
