his collection of Ikat Velvet panels is a first for Trowbridge Gallery. The woven textiles are framed in the Silver Leaf Églomisé Frame to complement the shimmering velvet. Tones of blue, grey and silver work together to create seven eye-catching designs featuring geometric tessellations, abstract floral patterns and bold tribal designs. With the flexibility of hanging the panels horizontally or vertically, the pieces will work well in duplicate sets or alternating configurations. Ikat is a term for fabric which is hand-dyed using a method of centuries old traditions of tying and dying weft and warp yarn to create a desired pattern. These luxurious fabrics come from Uzbekistan.

SHELBA IS HONOURED
T
he Bienenstock Furniture Library unveiled a Kinetic Sculpture honoring industry veteran Shelba Cornelison who has been part of the High Point Market for decades. Shelba served as editor of Furniture South magazine, now Furniture World. She left the publication to go with shelter publication Southern Accents where she had a successful career in advertising sales until the magazine closed. She is currently our USA advertising manager for Bridge for Design. Charlie Sutton, Board Chairman Emeritus commented, ‘Shelba is a whirlwind of energy with a bright and cheery disposition. This kinetic and colourful sculpture reflects her personality and will be a permanent reminder of the contributions she has made not only to the library but to the home furnishings industry.’ The sculpture was designed and created by Morganton native John Ross. ‘What stands out with Machine #1 is the white base and the colourful geometric shapes that float delicately through the air. The purpose of this piece is to produce joy. My intention is to put the viewer in a meditative state as the piece dances with the wind.’

ARMOURCOAT ACOUSTIC CREATES A CALM AND INVITING ENVIRONMENT Decorative specialist Armourcoat exhibited at the Decorex International Exhibition in September. usi Bellamy’s entry into the world of interiors is as colourful as her range. She began her company after she stood in her studio one day looking at a square painting and thought, ‘that would look fabulous as a cushion.’ Her years living in Florence had already provided her with a rich visual repertoire of motifs, colours and textures which she would revisit, rework and reimagine for a modern, high-end design context. She began producing luxurious cushions based on her original artwork. Now, with an exclusive collaboration with Heals under her belt, she has expanded her product range to include wallpapers, fabrics, lampshades and bespoke stools. Susi’s current collection is inspired by naturally occurring textures and the ancient Florentine practice of paper marbling. The colourful vibrancy of the designs create an enjoyable juxtaposition between the fluidity of the marbled prints and the antiquitous layers of the Abstracts. The colour palettes are informed by trends and often experimented with to create new relevant variations within collections.

EMBRACING COLOURS Are you a bold or subtle colourist - or are neutrals your natural habitat?
M
any people have lost their nerve when it comes to using colour, but there are signs that confidence is returning. One only has to think of the bright blues, greens and yellows of the Aesthetic Movement or the riot of colours favoured by the Prince Regent to see just how much people now shy away from the use of bold and vibrant tones. Instead they fall back on a ‘safer’ neutral approach which has led the trend for the white, ‘non-colours’ that are so prevalent today. A good shortcut to a better understanding of colour is to look at your favourite painting and examine what it is in the colours that you like, or simply imagine a beautiful garden in full bloom. Both probably combine a lot of different colours that you would not necessarily think of using together. Antique rugs are often a good source of surprising but successful colour combinations. You can also get inspiration from one of the many wonderful fabric design houses such as Pierre Frey, Claremont or Rubelli. They demonstrate how colour works with pattern and how contrasting colours can often make a design scheme sing. Using a colour on the opposite side of the colour spectrum to the primary shade you are using can make the whole scheme sparkle. Neutrals and beiges have now become old hat, and clients are growing in confidence and creativity - more determined than ever to avoid the bland ‘showroom’ look. For example,

we recently painted the hall of a home in London a deep aubergine, which not only creates a memorable first impression but also sets the tone for the rest of the house. Another client has a wonderful and divergent art collection that is so colourful it proved difficult to find a palette of colours which allowed all the pieces to shine. So, for her, we did create a relatively neutral background, but we then used strong accents of colour to complement the various artworks. There is no need to be scared of stronger colours as long as you combine them with clean architectural details. If you are still nervous of using them, then lacquer has a wonderful reflective quality which lightens the tone by reflecting the light around it, while adding drama at the same time. Different paint finishes can also change the character and feel of a colour. From matt or distemper to eggshell or gloss, a single colour will appear differently in each finish, providing a wide range of options to play with. Specialist painting can also be used to great effect when multiple layers of different shades are built up. No approach to colour is right or wrong, it is ultimately about personal choice and the scheme you choose should reflect that. So, ask yourself whether you are a bold colourist or a subtle colourist - or are whites and neutrals your natural habitat?

ne of Lucy Clark’s discerning clients was looking to overhaul a prime central London location which gave Lucy and her team what they described as ‘an interior designer’s dream.’ The reason for this was that she had bought it directly off plan from a developer as something of a blank canvas, and wanted the designers to create a real sanctuary. There was one unexpected guiding principal behind the entire project at the client’s request - wallpaper. De Gournay wallpaper in particular. Lucy Clark and her team took this as their starting point, allowing for a wealth of luxurious touches to be added throughout the home. For this project - which turned out to develop into an almost entirely bespoke home - the main living area features a stunning Japanese garden, and the designers chose to base much of their bespoke work around this. They commissioned a bespoke lighting designer, Habadashery, to create a first edition ‘Bloom’ china and gold edged flower installation, which beautifully replicates the magnolia featured in the wallpaper as well as serving as a definite focal point. The client also explained how it was important for the designers to partition the spaces in the apartment, both to create a formal and relaxed living space as well as to ensure smells from the kitchen did not encroach into the dining and living space when entertaining. As much as the home was to be an artistic wonder, it also needed to function as exactly that - a home. hello And what is a home if not furnished? Lucy and her team worked closely with furniture makers Thomas James Furniture and George Smith to create all the bespoke furniture pieces that would feature in the new home. These collaborations ensured that the materials used were understated but luxurious and would allow the De Gournay motifs to take centre stage.

Wallpaper was again taken as an influence in the master bedroom and other living spaces, this time to create window treatments. These work wonders at complementing the wallpapers in those rooms and were designed with Vero Fabrics, who specialise in the production of luxurious seamless borders. The master suite itself was inspired by yet another De Gournay wallpaper, but this time Lucy and the team introduced a beautiful mixture of soft purples, taupe and subtle tints of green to the palette. hello Lucy says her favourite aspect of the whole project was the bespoke screens which were specially created. Lucy explains that the main issue was getting all the bespoke pieces into the apartment, cranes were hired and hoists were used to get the furniture and screens up in through the windows, and this meant ensuring site access checks took place by all suppliers. hello

However all that effort - and particularly hauling the screens - was worth it. Lucy says their incredible intricacy stemmed from many detailed construction drawings which were made to ensure there were no errors further down the line. To see them finally in situ was, as Lucy says, overwhelming. hello One interesting element of the project, on a practical level, was the fact the client originally wanted to stay in the apartment whilst the team completed the works, but they persuaded her to move out. explains that many of her clients get nervous when their homes are being stripped back, but will usually take time and care to make them aware of health and safety issues during any work. hello The often complex work simply demands upheaval. When removing staircase balustrading, updating the wiring and audio/visual elements of the home and reinforcing ceilings for the sliding screens and pendant lights, it was vital to take ownership of the apartment, Lucy explains. The client eventually

ended up moving abroad during the renovation. And of course, when the work is finished, it makes for a spectacular ‘grand reveal’ moment when they return. Lucy says that in this case, her client was incredibly happy - and Studio Clark + Co are continuing to help the client with further home dressings.

I
n the heart of one of the most up and coming areas of central London - the borough of Hackney - a 3000-square foot townhouse which spans four storeys has been redesigned with a touch of masculine glamour, bespoke design and meticulous attention to detail. Designers Casa Botelho knew that initially, they would have to extend the property to increase the levels of natural light on the ground floor. However, their main goal was to combine creativity and design with practicality and comfort. The goal was most definitely achieved. ‘Every room has a human touch and is filled with surprises, wittiness and is complemented with elegant designs. The result is unique, bold and made to last forever,’ says João Botelho, Founder and Creative Director of Casa Botelho. The ground floor comprises an open plan kitchen diner and living room with impressive high ceilings, giving way to integrated skylights. There are also reclaimed wooden floors, stunning Louis VX marble fireplaces, a custom made kitchen and three bespoke three-metre French doors which open out to the garden and a bijou washroom. In addition, the garden features a utility room with dining, lounge and barbeque zones. Back inside, the new, extended open plan living on the ground floor with floor-to-ceiling French doors, provides the clients with a unique indoor/outdoor living space. Up on the first floor is the master bedroom, a bathroom with its own fireplace and a sleek walk-in wardrobe. Two large double bedrooms and a bathroom are found on the floor above. Impressively, the basement is home to a selfcontained open plan flat which benefits from two bedrooms and one bathroom. ‘We wanted to achieve a symmetrical theme by incorporating a similarity and recurrence of shapes and forms,’ says João. It’s clear that mirrors, lighting, chairs and artwork are doubled and multiplied to achieve this balance and symmetry in each room. The high ceilings add to this sense of space, exuding a warmth and harmony. The furnishings are a combination of vintage and modern pieces, which also helped to create a stark visual statement and a way to add drama throughout.

t’s a common story these days. The hectic life of the working week in the city is replaced at weekends and for holidays by stressed families looking to escape and entertain. It could be to the woods or to a stretch of water, but these weekend homes have taken on even more significance, especially with regards to wellbeing and relaxation over recent years. In tandem with this, there comes traffic amassed by hundreds of families doing exactly the same thing. And so, for one New York-based couple, the three-hour slog from their townhouse on the Upper East Side to the Hamptons each Friday evening became too stressful. To counter this, they went where very few weekenders had gone before - Greenwich, Connecticut - the ultimate suburb for city commuters. Located only 40 minutes from Manhattan, the Fairfield County town is widely considered among the area’s most luxurious

bedroom communities. However, coming from the city centre, to the couple and their young children, the area soon became a refuge after their busy working weeks. The house they found was a neo-Georgian Colonial built in the 1980s across a lush 12 acres. Almost exactly the perfect fit for their needs, it was roomy enough for the children to get lost playing in, but also served as a perfect location for their beloved dinner parties. It had seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms, but it was not stylistically ideal. The décor left a lot to be desired, and was essentially the same as it had been in the 1980s, with wall-to-wall carpeting and a lot of chintz dotted around. Understandably perhaps, the couple needed to give it a complete overhaul. They wanted a warm yet modern getaway that was casually elegant but retained a decidedly New England vibe. They turned to designer Thom Filicia, who is known for his relaxed take on American style, and whose restoration work and updating of his own lakeside house in upstate New York is documented in his book, American Beauty. He first came to prominence in the early 2000s on television’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, and has decorated everything from Jennifer Lopez’s beach house to the interiors of W hotels. The couple made it clear to Thom that they wanted peace and quiet in their new home, one with no drama. He confesses that the house was a ‘huge project,’ - no surprise for a 10,000-square foot home that includes a full spa with a sauna and yoga room. His main goal was to ensure the classical references remained in each room, just minus the stodge. After being given a budget, a time limit of a year was set. and Terence Stamp use to stamp their sartorial cool - the couple could never be accused of being old-fashioned. Their brand is very much at the cutting edge of British tailoring, and undoubtedly its precise fit and luxurious but understated use of materials informed their design preferences at the new home. They wanted rooms comfortable enough for the family to gather and read by the fire in, but it was also important to them that the interior reflected the quiet dazzle that Douglas Hayward represents, with luxury textiles, perfectly executed details and definitely not too many frills. However for furnishing, Thom looked to his own designs. He creates pieces for Vanguard Furniture as well as fabrics for Kravet and rugs for Safavieh, and all are deployed throughout the couple’s home. a tufted headboard in the master suite, for example. To build on the all-American spirit of the dÊcor further, Thom placed two consoles featuring carved-eagle bases in the entry hall to greet visitors, paired with antique round mirrors set in contemporary steel frames. The designer concedes there is a formality to this area of the home, but that it’s not overbearingly stiff. In fact, it forms the basis for the tone he was aiming for throughout the entire home. In addition to Thom’s plan, the couple decided to convey a modern approach to the finishing of the property. They used a palette of blues and toned-down reds and rusts - typically New England tones - which Thom brought to life further by setting them off against neutral fabrics and tactile wall treatments such as grass cloth. Antique burlap armchairs in the living room sport cushions of deep red to contrast with the sand coloured rugs and Venetian plaster walls. Meanwhile, the library is an ode to indigo, from the sofa and walls to the artwork. Thom says that the owners had a desire for things to be elegant but also fresh. This stems in part from their youth but also their need to entertain at dinner parties frequently. As a result, the design of the dining room was of paramount importance. So Thom lined the walls with a subtle take on a traditional damask, and took care to contrast such unexpected items as a carved statue of a Hindu goddess with an abstract woodwork. Essentially, the couple wanted a weekend home that would be as unfussy and up-to-date as they are, Thom believes. They wanted it to be American, just with an edge. And in their new, weekend getaway, now the perfect spot for relaxation and unwinding, they certainly got it. ELEGANT FLAMBOYANCE Designer Serdar Gülgün has mastered the art of exalting the beauty of the past with a very personal twist in his Istanbul home PHOTOGRAPHS MARK LUSCOMBE-WHYTE | AUTHOR KARINE MONIÉ
I
t took Serdar Gülgün a huge amount of research - and numerous real estate agents - to find the historic home he wanted. It took great effort, he says, but it was worth it. Built in the 1860s, the ‘new’ home Serdar discovered was once a hunting pavilion for an exiled Hungarian soldier who then became Ottoman and was granted the title of Pasha. When a restorer friend of Serdar’s first found it, however, it was in a far less glamourous condition. In dire need of refurbishment and badly looked after, Serdar nevertheless fell in love with the home. But it took two years of negotiating before the whole renovation process could even start, he remembers. Located on the Asian side of the Bosporus in Çengelköy - an area of Istanbul that today is famous for its elegant wooden houses, bright greengrocers and chic seafood eateries - the home Serdar had chosen manages to echo the history of the region. But as well as this, as befits an ever-changing cosmopolitan city, it reflects this vibrancy, this creativity and forward looking ethos. Serdar himself was born in the city and felt that through the design of his new home he wanted to create a mixing pot of cultures, atmospheres, even religions.
The end result is truly inspirational. Made of stone and spread across 1,000 square metres, the home comprises four storeys. The ground floor is known as the ‘garden flat’, and is occupied by Serdar’s niece. Moving upwards into the first and second floors, it is here the feeling of something palatial is most evident in the home, covered as it is in rich woods. Higher still, on the top floor ,which was historically known as ‘the belvedere’, the guest apartment is gifted with panoramic views out on to the Bosporus. Perhaps one of the greatest triumphs in Serdar’s impressive home is the sense of space and freedom within it. He believes this is something that comes of a result of working for yourself. The task was different, he says, to working for a client. When it is your own home, there is a freedom - but this can be a challenge as well as something liberating. In the end, his ‘dream house’ came to life before his eyes, he says, aided by pieces of art and furniture he had collected over the years, giving a sense of colour and texture to the home which is totally unique and personal to Serdar. In a way, such a design scheme also acts as a kind of diary, with elements of the designer’s life evident in each of the different parts of the home.

Several aspects of the architecture and design make reference back to classical Ottoman houses. One noteworthy point is that there are no corridors in the home. Instead, there is one central hall, which Serdar has christened the ‘sofa room’. This has been created in the shape of a cross, which is reminiscent of Byzantine church plans. In the centre, you can see an oval dome, which symbolises the Ottoman imperial tent.

Many of the materials used, such as local timber and wooden plain plants, as well as traditional Marmara marble, are redolent of the Ottoman hammams. Carved and domed ceilings that were restored or recreated are decorated with beautiful motifs. There is almost too much to look at and admire - each and every nook is finely embellished with Oushak carpets, Ottoman calligraphies and inlaid mother-of-pearl Syrian armoires.

Serdar confesses that he is an avid collector of turtle carapaces, which he turns into objects of curiosity. This is in fact a lifelong passion that has led him to launch his own brand, Serdar GÜlgÜn Istanbul.
These sublime frescoes, imperial portraits and antiquities, each combined with pieces which have been crafted by Serdar, create a heady mix that manages to embody both the sophisticated and bold style of his work.

Serdar’s knowledge of art history was his main guide, he says, but adds that his real aim was to make the home liveable, and not to feel as if he were dwelling in a museum or gallery. And yet, the house has become an artwork itself. It’s just that, more importantly, it’s most definitely a home.

any travelers expect luxury as standard, epitomised by the French sophistication of the 1920s and 30s, the chrome and black lacquer of the Art Deco period, the use of rich velvet and silk furnishings, highly polished wood paneling, inlaid flooring and ornate architectural detailing. From trains, to planes and ships, there is a move to reflect the extravagance of one’s own home, and La Sultana, a ship with a rags to riches history achieves this astonishingly. Built in Varna in 1962 by Russian shipbuilder Georgi Dimitrov as one of twelve ships of the Soviet fleet, the Aji Petri (as was), started life as a Black Sea ferry in the exotic parts of Odessa, Sevastopol, Istanbul and Yalta. In the 1970s, the Soviet Navy sent the ship to the North Atlantic to spy on Britain and the United States of America. hello At the end of the Cold War it was assigned to a Bulgarian shipping company, ferrying passengers

between Istanbul and Yalta. Then in 2007, it was acquired by La Sultana hotels in Oualidia and Marrakech. Its transformation to super yacht took seven years, an undertaking involving over 1.2 million hours of labour, being entirely re-riveted for the silhouette of a Gentleman’s Yacht with a new helicopter hoist, open leisure space and a hydraulic door adding a swimming platform and sea access. There was an unlimited budget, and as the final results testify, no expense was spared.

La Sultana’s in-house design team transformed the 120 cabins to seven, spacious luxury cabins, each with an en-suite marble-clad bathroom with onyx features. Decks were stripped and re-laid in ipe and iroko wood, while ornately carved paneling of mahogany, cherry wood and cedar, floor-length sculpted glass walls and copper light fixtures were introduced. Relaunched in July 2015, La Sultana became an instant success as a charter. A corridor leads guests past four lower deck cabins to a vast lobby,

where a staircase inspired by the Monnaie du Pape banister, by Art Nouveau designer Louis Majorelle, sweeps up. A dining saloon and lounge combine oriental elements and influences from the Belle Epoque. estled away in Switzerland’s Engadin Valley sits St. Moritz, a luxury five-star alpine resort with bountiful charming character. Traditional houses with thick stone walls, small funnel shaped windows and sgraffito decoration rub shoulders with Winter retreats of some of the World’s most exclusive celebrities. The owners of this lakeside chalet were regular visitors of St Moritz and acquired a plot of land in the highly prized region of Silvaplana. Known for her mastery of chalet design, Nicky Dobree was commissioned to design and build what has now become their family Alpine home. The initial concept from the Architect was to design something that was brutal and minimalist which strays from the local architecture, and also not what the client wanted. Nicky’s brief was to inject the chalet with warmth, individuality and local character whilst maintaining a strong contemporary look. The chalet had a space of 300 square metres spread across three storeys which included five bedrooms, five bathrooms and a vast open plan

living area with epic views over Lake Silvaplana. Much of the design was inspired by these lifeenhancing views - the shimmering lake, the dense green woodland, and the snow-capped mountains beyond. Enlisting an army of talented German craftsmen, Nicky and her team sourced the finest natural materials to design a ‘chalet with a twist’. The client is very sociable and enjoys entertaining so creating an environment in which their guests could relax was paramount. They are also avid art collectors, so it was important to work alongside their eye-catching pieces, including the ‘Sushi console’ by the Campana brothers and the bronze coffee table in the sitting room designed by Ingrid Donat. New bespoke commissions were added throughout the

project, including the striking stag head over the stairs leading down to the spa and ski room. In the sitting room, the monolithic stone fireplace makes a strong focal point. Crocodile leather side tables and oriental style lanterns add a hint of the exotic. Blue sofas with contrasting tartan chairs provide ample comfortable seating, whilst the nod to the outdoors is ever present, not only through the picture windows, but in the pine cones collected from a walk around the lake that fill the lamp bases, and the embroidered Autumnal leaves on the cushions. Concealed lighting softly illuminates the ceiling beams accentuating the architecture of the roof. Fitted deerskin banquettes with blue and orange topstitching provide flexible seating arrangements for

the dining area which flank a specially commissioned solid oak table with subtle orange detailing on the legs. An antler chandelier hangs stately above the table further emphasising the rustic authenticity. ‘Upstairs, as my client’s favourite colour is blue, the vibrant blue palette continues from the sitting room into the master bedroom,’ says Nicky. A combination of wool and cashmere inject a luxurious touch of warmth and the tables were custom made in woven leather, on a walnut frame and finished with bronze handles. Downstairs, on the lower ground floor, lies the ski room and spa featuring natural textured stone and timber. The overall effect is dramatic yet practical

and underfloor heating makes slipping off your boots all the more pleasurable. ‘A wooden cold water plunge tub was added to the sauna for those brave enough for the full Scandi sauna experience.’ The client was thrilled with the result and has since asked Nicky to redesign their home in Munich.

W
hen a married couple first set eyes on a 10,000 square foot house, set in ten acres of gardens in the affluent Buckhead region of Atlanta, Georgia, they had a feeling it would become their ‘forever home’. The pair had a young family, along with the many concerns stemming from day to day life associated with that, to consider when searching for a new place to live. The 1920s building they found was therefore always intended to be a ‘lived in’ home, for both them and their small children. So the new home was to be entirely refurbished to make it child friendly. The couple already knew they were after a historic property in the region, and had already viewed another property designed by famed American architect Philip Trammell Shutze before this one. Ultimately though, the alternative to purchasing this particular property was to build from scratch, which the pair knew was not for them. The wife, Emily Giffin - who is the author of seven New York Times best sellers - was very involved in the project from beginning to end. Her career and style of working enabled this somewhat, as being a writer, she usually works from home. However, her husband also works from an office at home, so the house is a beehive of activity both day and night, with three very active small children around for much of the time. The pair are also active philanthropically and so have large gatherings on a regular basis, which the design of the new home would certainly need to
accommodate. In among the home’s lush gardens is also a swimming pool, which makes this type of entertaining even more of a joy. Designer Beth Webb says that the style of the space the family ended up with is decidedly more transitional than traditional, which was always the intent. She explains that the previous owners were quite traditional themselves, especially when it came to the interiors, which were fashioned in an English Country style. Although such an approach was warm and welcoming, Beth thought it was too dark for her

clients. Emily decided she wanted a lighter, fresher palette with a more fashion-forward approach as well as an eclectic mix in the furnishings and art, Beth explains. To achieve this, the designer kept in mind that simplicity is key, no matter what the stylistic bent of the client you are working for is. Quoting American novelist Edith Wharton, and that ‘supreme excellence is simplicity,’ Beth tried hard to keep her work well edited. The house had perfect proportions and so she

kept the interior design elegant yet comfortable. Perhaps it was this simplicity that made the project such an enjoyable - even easy - one for Beth and her team. She confesses that often a project can throw up a host of challenges, but that in this instance, thanks largely to an amazing client and a great builder, but also a brilliant architect for the renovation in the form of D. Stanley Dixon, the project was seamless. Another aspect of the task that gave Beth a head start

was Emily’s willingness to research the features for the home online - and often in the wee small hours too. Beth said she often found emails at all times of the night suggesting items to purchase for the emerging new home. The pair even visited nearby residential and contract furnishing design centre ADAC, also in Buckhead, along with other local retailers, to get a real feel for items they were considering furnishing the home with. Emily also sought Beth’s advice about pieces of art for the home, wanting to know what to put in her home, and where to source it.

It was an approach like this that Beth says gives her the inspiration to continue, a mission statement if you like. Emily and Beth would go on to search for art for the home together, meeting up at the end of a trip to compare notes. But Beth says that, at the end of the day, she can only be as good as her clients allow her to be. Luckily, in this case, that was very good indeed.

nterior designer Holly Hollenbeck admits she was something of a one-woman team when it came to redesigning her own 6,200-square foot home in the historic region of Alamo Square, San Francisco. Her goal for the new home’s renovation was to create a direct change from the Country Queen Anne Victorian home she’d just moved from, this time using brighter colours and tones, and to bring in 1960s and 70s influences as well. To add to this, Holly says that in order to keep the project feeling young, she had a desire to let street art play its part in the overall feel of the home, and this would also act as a counter to the historical elements of its interior. She stripped all the original white oak paneling back to the raw oak, then applied a light wax to keep them as natural, modern and light as possible. The original herringbone oak floors which also remain and were refinished. The original floorplan was stuck with, although part of the second floor was changed to create a master suite. The minimal, if traditional inclusion of just two

bathrooms on the original floorplan was altered to allow more en-suite rooms for Holly’s family and guests. Many of the key decisions, Holly says, came from a feeling in her gut, something her family are more than used to trusting. She followed her instincts and went with experiments - and as it was her own home, she had a touch more freedom. Obviously this also meant Holly could shop for herself and take design cues from key pieces. The first furnishing she selected for the home was the Stark area rug in the living room. With its bright colours and street art look, the piece was the embodiment of the feel she was going for, she felt, and the colour scheme of the home was largely driven by the prominent oranges, blues and yellows in the area rug. Finally, the powder room was spectacularly hand

painted by artist Victor Reyes, who is now a friend of Holly’s. She first found his art through Instagram, only to discover he was a neighbour. When she called and asked to meet with him regarding painting a powder room, Victor was reluctant, as he is a respected artist who creates large scale murals and sells works on canvas through dealers and galleries. However, Holly begged until he agreed to come and see the house. Luckily, he liked what was happening in the house and agreed to paint the room with a mural. He was given totally free reign to do his work as he saw fit for the space - another testament to Holly’s gut instinct and free reign winning through.

or interior designer Shay Geyer, a project in a beautiful Dallas home was a matter of balancing the client’s love of bold colour with their impressive art collection. On entering, visitors are met with a grand staircase, as well as a view into the spa-style backyard. Art is backed by crisp, non-competing white walls. In the foyer, for example, a piece featuring Jack Nicholson tipping his hat greets you. A sitting area underneath the staircase uses modern chairs in a rich teal velvet and chrome frame, and a fabric sculpture from artist and fashion designer Elizabeth Anyaa hangs above.

In the master bedroom, there is a calm palette of silvery blue and white, with white Venetian plaster walls contrasting with the wood and chrome bed. A white Tibetan lamb’s wool pillow and a bench used as a cocktail ottoman in the sitting area manage to layer texture into the space, while pattern was introduced with the drapery panels. A pair of Jan Showers lamps, mother of pearl end tables, a chrome chain link chandelier and an antique mirrored cabinet serve as jewelry pieces. One of the most breathtaking elements of the home, the master bathroom, benefits from Carrarra marble throughout. Frosted glass panels serve as walls to the shower

and closet, while wood vanities adorned with jeweled hardware flank the entryway. A wall of mirror stands behind the free-standing bath, and a silvery-blue quatrefoil chair partners a make-up vanity in front of the large windows. The breakfast nook features a fireplace with a pair of egg chairs, grounded by a patterned hide that features a small burst of orange. The dining table nestles in front of an aquarium. As you might expect, the kitchen is a chef ’s dream. Custom Italian cabinetry, floating shelves and Cararra marble - an echo of the master bathroom - offers a fresh modern feel. A suspended glass bar was designed for children to dine at and for serving during parties. Moving outside, a backyard oasis with a stunning cobalt blue mosaic tile pool and tranquility spa heightens the feeling of luxury. Modern furniture in crisp white fabric was used for the chaise lounges and sitting area, and the

esigners Tailored Living Interiors have refurbished a home located in a very prestigious residential road in Barnes. Working for a high level executive from a technology company and his wife and two teenage boys, the property had been recently renovated and extended before they bought it. a sophisticated basement extension with really high ceilings had been added, in addition to a double storey rear extension and dormer alteration. ------The property had been renovated to very high standards, and Tailored Living’s aim was to create an interior worthy of all the wonderful existing architectural details already in place. And so, the layout was working perfectly. No interior architectural design was required for this project, with the team’s main focus having been to create a flow internally within each of the rooms, it said. Working closely with the client, different functions were allocated to each of the rooms. For instance, a large basement space was clearly marked out as the

cinema room, but other rooms required a little bit more thought to find them a perfect function. The collaboration between client and designer worked harmoniously throughout the project. It transpired that all parties shared an appreciation of the finer details, with all confessing a perfectionist side to their personalities. As a result, this project was ‘plain sailing,’ and moved along at an impressive pace for one of this size. -----------------------------Most of the furniture in the home as it stands today was bespoke made. This included the coffee table and sideboards in the reception, the kitchen shelving, all the home’s headboards, the office furniture, as well as the library, bar chairs and poufs in the cinema.

REVIEW Jim Evans, from Uber Interiors, brings you the latest trends from the UK’s most prestigious interior design show
N
ow in its 40th year, Decorex celebrates the best in product, design and innovation. This renowned event has become the most eagerly anticipated date on the calendar at London Design Week attracting a mixture of interior designers, suppliers, buyers and bloggers. The four-day showcase was housed in the beautiful grounds at Syon Park where established brands and emerging talent revealed their latest collections to industry. Each year, acclaimed designers collaborate to produce the entrance installation. For 2017, a carousel of four sets carried the theme ‘Disruptive Dining’ creating an interactive space that brought the worlds of fashion, floristry, set design and interior design together in a colourful dining experience. The installation featured some of the top names in industry including a collaboration between Matthew Williamson and Osbourne and Little. However, the star of the show was a breath-taking floral masterpiece by Larry Walshe and Dominic Shuster featuring over 4,000 fresh flowers.
As you moved out of the entrance hall and into the main exhibition space, you could see two storey glass panels surrounding a luxurious champagne bar. Created by award winning designer Shalini Misra, the bar was inspired by the Great Exhibition that took place in Crystal Palace in 1851. The internationally acclaimed event was attended by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The installation featured zones of colourful seating, an abundance of greenery, oriental screens and low hanging pendant lighting all set over a striking chequered floor. With a stunning flame-effect LED chandelier placed above a tower of champagne bottles, it proved a perfect spot for a well-deserved glass of fizz. This 21st Century take on a key moment in history felt fitting for Decorex’s celebratory year. Seminars also took place throughout the four-day event and included insightful talks by leading industry professionals including Houzz, Home & Garden and ColourHive. Topics included ‘The Future of Design’,

‘Taking your Brand Global’ and ‘Colour and Material Trends for Autumn/Winter 2018/2019’. A variety of luxury lighting, furniture, accessories and fabric brands filled the exhibition space with their latest collections, inspiring room sets and covetable product designs. Among the carefully curated sets were emerging trends that formed fresh ideas for the upcoming season. One of the most prominent trends at the event was the Mid-Century Modern look. A popular era of design, we have seen sleek, angular lines saturate the interior industry over the past five years. But this year, most brands at Decorex had their own individual take on this timeless style. Munna and Green Apple brought a fun element to the Mid-Century Modern aesthetic. Armchairs and sofas upholstered in pastel mint and powdery blue shades sat alongside metallic accessories and marble surfaces. Both brands styled their furniture pieces with tropical palm print wallpaper which evoked a laid-back Miami beach vibe. Another trend that is here to stay, tropical and palm leaf print designs could be seen at well-known fabric and wallpaper brands including Cole & Son. The Coveted group are known for their statement pieces and at Decorex 2017 they did not disappoint. Earthy tones mingled with bright pops of colour creating a quirky style that is synonymous with their range of brands. Midcentury modern armchairs in soft velvet fabrics are placed alongside striking accessories, extravagant gold and the most incredible cocktail cabinet. From fun and quirky to elegant and sophisticated, Bert Frank showcased a very different look to their contemporaries. The dark wood finishes, sleek lines and dusty pink upholstery screamed traditional 60s design, yet felt modern and up-to-date. The look was complemented by a pendant lighting scheme in an on-trend brass finish. Sanctuary and escapism are among the top trends for the new season cemented by Dulux’s colour of the year for 2018 ‘Heart Wood’. The dusty pink shade reflects our need for comfort and calm in an age of uncertainty. Rich and inviting, this rosy hue is inspired by warm woods, hand-craft and luxurious leather. This powerful trend is all about creating a retreat from the outside world with a focus on artisanal products, exceptional craftsmanship and unique detailing. We are drawn towards natural materials such as wool, yarn and geological formations. Serip used nature’s inspiration such as Autumn leaves to form modular lighting for walls and ceilings intertwining glass and metals to mesmerising effect. While Ginger & Jagger and CTO Lighting were among the brands producing incredible sculpture-like pendants, chandeliers and wall lights incorporated metallics, glass and marble to create lighting that was reminiscent of pieces of art. The finest alabaster stone is the material of choice at Atelier Alain Ellouz whose elegant lighting designs feature in top hoteliers, restaurants and residential properties across the world. Clients have included the likes of Guerlain and Louis Vuitton whose luxury retail spaces showcase this natural material at its best. Heathfield & Co’s new collection of table lamps also included this striking material which was finished with details of antique brass and copper. Our love affair with Art Deco is still prevalent in interiors
this season and could be seen in lighting, materials and fabrics across the luxury brands at Decorex. Geometric patterns, metallics, marble and dark wood furniture are the key elements of this glamorous trend. Pantone’s colour of the year, ‘Greenery’, complements the Art Deco theme perfectly. Deep, opulent greens in an array of jewel shades could be seen at a variety of stalls at the show. Different tones of marble work beautifully with Art Deco inspired style. Ginger & Jagger used marble to ultimate effect creating either a glamorous or earthy look depending on the individual colours and finishes of the stone. As the opening event for London Design Week ended, spirits were high, and excitement built for the upcoming season. Overall, Decorex 2017 provided a wonderful day that celebrated the bespoke and artisanal processes that set these brands head and shoulders above the rest.
