*EDITOR’S NOTE- This story orginally ran in 2012 as a part of the Class of 2012 Troy Sports Hall of Fame ceremony.* After playing his last football game for Troy State over 44 years ago, Sim Byrd’s name still lines the program’s record books. One of the greatest players ever to play at Troy, Byrd ranks among the leaders in many of the program’s all-time passing records. Byrd quarterbacked the Red Wave from 1966 to 1968. Troy State compiled a 24-8 record with Byrd at the helm of the offense, but the crowning achievement was the school’s first national championship in 1968. Byrd set then single-season records for passing yards, completions and pass attempts during the national championship season and was rewarded with first team NAIA All-America honors after leading the nation in passing and punting. Byrd led a record-setting aerial attack that led Troy State to the 1968 NAIA National Championship, as Troy State went 11-1 and defeated Texas A&I, 43-35, at Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl in the title game. “Our offense was unique,” said former Troy State wide receiver Danny Grant. “Coach Atkins’ system relied on the quarterback and the ability to look at the defense and make the right call (on what play to run).” In the national championship game, Byrd threw for five touchdowns and completed 25-of-44 passes en route to Most Valuable Back honors. In the national semifinals, Byrd led Troy State to a 63-10 victory over Williamette (Ore.) and tossed six touchdowns and rushed for another on the ground. Besides Byrd’s pinpoint accuracy that he displayed as a passer, Grant says the most memorable thing about his former teammate was his competitive drive. “We were playing in Ozark against Delta State, and it was a close ball game and back then a tie was better than a loss,” Grant said. “Coach Atkins called a timeout to set up a field goal, but Sim yelled back ‘We came here to win coach, not to tie.” The Trojans defeated Delta State 35-23 that night, as Byrd threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns. Byrd passed for 3,569 yards in 1968 and threw 41 touchdowns, 26 of those touchdowns were caught by Grant and Bobby Enslen, as the duo combined to record 1,972 receiving yards in the 1968 campaign. “If you see the numbers he put up and the numbers that our receivers put up, he was incomparable to anyone else in the country,” Grant said.

Byrd’s passing total in 1968 still ranks as the third-most in Troy history, behind former Trojan Levi Brown and current Troy signal caller, Corey Robinson. In 1967, Byrd led Troy State to its first-ever Alabama Collegiate Championship. Troy State finished the season 8-2, as Byrd passed for 2,457 yards and threw 22 touchdowns. A member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the NAIA Hall of Fame, Byrd enters 2013 as Troy’s all-time leader with 79 career touchdown passes. He also enters the 2013 season second in total offensive yards and third in passing yards, completions, attempts, passing yards per game and passing efficiency. Byrd is one of just four players in school history to lead the team in passing yards and total offense in three straight seasons joining fellow Hall of Fame inductee Mike Turk, Brock Nutter and Corey Robinson.

Troy’s football history is littered with great players – National Player of the Year, All-Americans, Conference Players of the Year, the list goes on. For Leodis McKelvin, he stood alone among the giants as Troy’s lone Football Bowl Subdivision AllAmerican for 11 seasons. “He was as good as it gets,” legendary Troy University football head coach and Troy Sports Hall of Fame member Larry Blakeney said. “He was a phenom as far as his athletic abilities and was a good guy, a great teammate and one heck of a football player.”

McKelvin earned All-America distinction from The Sporting News and Pro Football Weekly following the 2007 season in which he ranked third nationally averaging 18.3 yards per punt return and was the only player to return three punts for a touchdown. He led the Trojans in all-purpose yards (1,192) and when his storied Troy career was all said and done, McKelvin had returned a combined seven punts and kickoffs for a touchdown, just one shy of an NCAA record. His impact stretched far past the kicking game as McKelvin was frequently tasked with covering the opposing teams’ top receiver. Troy’s defense, led by McKelvin, held opponents to a measly 183.1 passing yards per game and just 24.6 points per contest as the Trojans rolled off an 8-4 record, including a victory over Oklahoma State. In that game against the Cowboys, a nationally-televised contest on ESPN2, McKelvin thrust himself into the national spotlight. He returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown to give the Trojans a 20-3 lead midway through the second quarter … he would go on to finish with a team-high seven tackles in addition to three pass break ups and a forced fumble in Troy’s 41-23 victory. “He was lean and he could fly,” Blakeney said. “He got me in trouble on his punt return against Oklahoma State. I was so excited and I ran out on the field following him down the sideline and the official that was following him ran right into

me, I’m not sure if they penalized me or not.” A quick glance at the box score shows Troy with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty following the return, no indication whether it was directed at Blakeney or the team for celebration. If it was on Blakeney, looking back it was well worth it. “When you have a guy back there like Leodis, it’s hard to kick it away from him unless you kick it out of bounds,” Blakeney said. “He could cover so much ground and wanted the ball in his hands. He was a true weapon any time he touched the football.” He touched the ball a lot in his Troy career as the three-time All-Sun Belt selection ranks first in Troy history in kickoff returns, kickoff return yards, punt returns, punt return yards and punt return touchdowns. Amazingly, McKelvin ranks fourth all-time in Troy history in all-purpose yards despite never taking an offensive snap – no other player in the top 20 in Troy’s record book in the category has less than 1,000 offensive yards. “The offensive coaches certainly wanted him on that side of the ball,” Blakeney said with a chuckle. “But at that point we were already using him in two-thirds of the game. He always drew the opponents’ top receiver and could change the game in an instance on special teams. “He will always be remembered for being an outstanding football player,” Blakeney added. “But he also needs to be remembered for being a stand up young man. He earned the respect of his teammates and was always one to come back and visit Troy when he was playing in the NFL. One of the first things he did when he was drafted was to build his momma a house. I’ve got nothing but the most respect for Leodis.” The Buffalo Bills made him the 11th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, which is tied with Troy’s DeMarcus Ware for the highest overall selection ever out of the Sun Belt Conference. McKelvin played nine seasons in the NFL – eight with the Bills and one with the Philadelphia Eagles – and recorded 360 tackles, 15 interceptions and six touchdowns.

Many say athletics is the front porch to any university, and n“Unquestionable character and a leader from day one,” is how former Troy University Athletics Director Dr. Ken Blankenship described Sandy Atkins when she stepped foot on Troy’s campus in the fall of 1993. By the time she graduated in the spring of 1995 and completed her two-year playing career for the Trojans, Atkins had left her mark not only on the Troy record book, but also on the Athletics Department and University as a whole.

“She has been a great representative of Troy University and committed to whatever she says she is going to do,” Dr. Blankenship said. “I don’t think you could find a better person to represent what Troy University stands for and what intercollegiate athletics stands for. Sandy is a shining example of that.” Atkins transferred to Troy prior to her junior season after playing two years at Shelton State Community College, where she was an All-American, and stepped into a brave new world of Division I athletics. Atkins’ first season with the Trojans just happened to be Troy’s first at the Division I level. “She had more reasons to fail than she did to succeed in softball having come from playing slow pitch in junior college to fast pitch here at Troy,” Dr. Blankenship said. Fail was not a word in Atkins’ vocabulary as she went on to rank 18th in the NCAA with 31 stolen bases and led Troy with 44 runs scored during her first season with the Trojans. But it was Atkins’ senior year where her true talent shone through. As a senior, Atkins set the Troy single-season records for hits (85) and runs scored (54), while posting the second-most stolen bases (36) and fifth-best batting average (.373). Atkins finished

the year ranked ninth in the country with her 36 stolen bases. Not only did Atkins enjoy individual success, but the Trojans also triumphed as a team. Troy posted a school record 58 wins during her senior season, which included a victory over Georgia Tech. “She was a great softball player, but more than that the she was determined and a competitive player,” Dr. Blankenship said. “If she needed to get on base, she would get hit by a pitch if she couldn’t get a hit – she would always find a way to get it done.” Atkins’ career numbers still hold the test of time as she still ranks first in school history with a .359 career batting average, while her .419 on-base percentage and 69 stolen bases are the fifth most in school history. After graduation at Troy, Atkins began her professional career as a graduate assistant at the University of Kentucky where she earned her master’s degree. From there, Atkins served as the Assistant Director of Compliance at the Southeastern Conference before returning to Troy as the Director of Compliance in 2001. Atkins quickly ascended the ladder within the Troy Athletics Department as she was named the Senior Woman Administrator in 2003, Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance in 2004, Associate Director of Athletics for Internal Affairs in 2007 and finally Senior Associate Director of Athletics in 2014. Atkins even served as the Interim Director of Athletics in the summer of 2015. Athletic success and leadership are part of her DNA as her father was a standout football player at Southern Miss and a respected principal at Sweet Water High School, while her uncle, Nolan Atkins, won numerous state championships at Sweet Water High School.

“What we’ve attempted to do at Troy University is to create an environment, a culture of caring, where our students can actually experience, get to know and live, work and learn with students from around the world,” Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, said. “That’s essential as they prepare to make a living and a life in today’s global marketplace.” Troy University is also home to the Confucius Institute, a center aimed at promoting Chinese language and culture and fostering business exchange opportunities. In addition, the University is home to the Center for International Business and Economic Development and the Manuel H. Johnson Center for Political Economy. TROY also led the way in the United States with its dual degree 1-2-1 program, a partnership with certain Chinese universities that allows Chinese students to start their degree program at home, transfer to TROY for two years and return to their home institutions to finish their degree. Students receive diplomas from both TROY and their home institutions at the completion of the program. TROY offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs across five colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business, Communication and Fine Arts, Health and Human Services and Education. In addition, Troy University offers a Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree, which prepares its graduates for the most advanced level of nursing care, and the Ph.D. in Sport Management. Troy University offers a vast exposure to the historical and cultural arts. On the Montgomery Campus, students, faculty and the general public can visit the Rosa Parks Museum, which celebrates the legacy of the late Civil Rights leader whose refusal to give up her seat on a city bus to a white male led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The Davis Theater for Performing Arts, also on the Montgomery Campus, provides a venue for a variety of local and regional musical and cultural entertainment.

On the Troy Campus, the Janice Hawkins Cultural Arts Park, named for the University’s First Lady, is home to an amphitheater, walking trails and a collection of outdoor sculpture, including 200 terracotta warriors by renowned sculptor Huo Bao Zhu. The park is also home to the International Arts Center, which includes the Huo Bao Zhu Gallery, the Fred Nall Museum, and Warriors Unearthed designed by Frank Marquette, an interpretive center explaining the significance and design of the terracotta warrior exhibit. The center is also home to studio and classroom space for the University’s Graphic Design program. TROY’s College of Communication and Fine Arts provides more than 200 public performances and artistic presentations each year, to an audience of more than 250,000 people. More than 20 percent of the students on the Troy Campus are involved in music study through the Sound of the South Marching Band, choral ensembles and private lessons. This year, the Concert Chorale ensemble performed at the historic Carnegie Hall and a group of music, theatre and dance students performed at the Danza in Arte a Pietrasanta Festival in Italy. Students on the Troy Campus looking to get involved in University life can choose from nearly 200 different campus service, religious and social organizations. Cocurricular organizations include the “South of the South” marching and concert bands, Collegiate Singers and Trojan Dance Repertory Ensemble. In addition, TROY offers a variety of activities to enhance the quality of student life on campus. Troy University has an active Greek Life, with 13 fraternities, 10 sororities and five music fraternities on its Troy Campus. A fraternity village consisting of seven two-story houses was opened in 2010. The Troy Campus has two active studentled publications, The Tropolitan and the Palladium. Also, the award-winning TROY TrojanVision broadcasts three live student produced newscasts daily.

33rd year University of Montevallo, ‘67 Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., a native of Mobile, Alabama, was named Chancellor of Troy University Sept. 1, 1989. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Montevallo and his doctorate from the University of Alabama. Upon completion of his bachelor’s degree in 1967, Hawkins was commissioned a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a platoon leader during the Vietnam War. For his combat duty, he received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and a citation from the Korean Marine Corps. Hawkins has overseen an era of change and growth at TROY, as he led the merger of the worldwide Troy State University System into the unified Troy University, an initiative called “One Great University.” More than $350 million has been invested in capital improvements by the Hawkins Administration, including new academic buildings on all four of TROY’s Alabama campuses. Chancellor Hawkins served as the catalyst for the University’s evolution to an international institution, as TROY has attracted record numbers of students from other nations and established teaching sites around the world. During his tenure, academic standards for admission have been increased, new degree programs were established in all academic colleges, and intercollegiate athletics joined the highest level of NCAA competition. Hawkins’ professional background includes his service as an assistant dean at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (1971-1979) and as

president of the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind in Talladega (1979-1989). In 1985, he was honored by the University of Montevallo as Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, and was the recipient of the 2003 AllAmerican Football Foundation’s “Top College President” Award. In 2005 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama. In 2007 he was recognized as the “Alabama Citizen of the Year” by the Alabama Broadcasters Association. In 2011, Dr. Hawkins was recognized with the Chief Executive Leadership Award presented by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and as the March of Dimes River Region Citizen of the Year. In 2012 he received the Distinguished Public Service Award from the Secretary of the Air Force for his service on the Air University Board of Visitors from 2004-2012. In 2014 he was one of nine university presidents/chancellors worldwide— and the only one in North America—to receive the World Confucius Institute’s Individual Performance Excellence Award. In October 2016 Dr. Hawkins was inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor. Three buildings are named in his honor: the “Jack and Janice Hawkins Chapel” at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, the “HawkinsAdams-Long Hall of Honor” and “Jack Hawkins, Jr. Hall” which serves the College of Education of Troy University. Hawkins was profiled as part of two books published in 2004: “Above and Beyond: Former Marines Conquer the Civilian

World” by Rudy Socha and Carolyn Darrow and “The Entrepreneurial College President” by James L. Fisher and James V. Koch. Hawkins serves on the board of directors of the Daniel Foundation, the Bennie Adkins Foundation, Business Council of Alabama, the American Village Trust, College Football Playoff Board of Managers, and Troy Bank and Trust Company. He has served as chairman of the Governor’s Committee on Employment of the Disabled, Board of Visitors of Marine Corps University, Better Business Bureau of Central Alabama, and past President of the Sun Belt Conference. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), as Chairman of the Council of University Presidents in Alabama, as President of the Southland Football League, as chairman of the Air University Board of Visitors, as a trustee of Talladega College, the Helen Keller Eye Research Foundation, and the American Foundation for the Blind. He is a member of the Troy Rotary Club. Dr. Hawkins is married to Janice Hawkins and they have two daughters, Katie, a former officer in the USAF who is married to Air Force Col. Dan Beall; and Kelly Godwin, an attorney and member of the Troy University faculty who is married to Adam Godwin, a former professional baseball player and a member of the Troy University baseball staff. Dr. and Mrs. Hawkins are the proud grandparents of Noah and Ellyotte, who live in Maryland, and Micah Mae, who lives in Montgomery.

In just two years as Troy’s Director of Athletics, Brent Jones has overseen a restructuring of the department’s external and internal teams that has led the department to set records in academics, licensing, attendance and season ticket sales. Jones leads the department under his W-4 mantra – Winning in the Classroom, Winning on the Field, Winning in the Community and Winning in the Stands. On the court, Troy posted one of its top Bubas Cup (Sun Belt All-Sports Trophy) finishes in recent years in 2020 despite many high-scoring spring sports not earning points due to the COVID-19 stoppage of play. Additionally, Jones guided the Troy Athletic Department through the most-unprecedented years in collegiate athletics due to COVID-19 with Troy operating a full capacity from a staff, student-athlete and sport participation standpoint, and Troy’s football team playing an 11-game schedule. On the court, the success of Troy’s teams has been plentiful. The Troy women’s basketball program won its third and fourth Sun Belt Conference titles in the last six seasons in 2020 and 2021. The volleyball program posted one of the best turnarounds in the nation in 2019 which saw it advance to postseason play for

This past season, the Troy softball program finished second in the Sun Belt Conference and earned an at-large selection; Troy’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in 25 years. Additionally, Troy baseball finished third in the Sun Belt, Gemma Finch advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship in the 800m and men’s tennis entered the Sun Belt Tournament as the league’s No. 2 seed. The women’s cross country team turned in its best-ever finish at the Sun Belt Championship and the men’s basketball team won a game in the Sun Belt Tournament for the first time since 2018. Off the field of play, Jones has led Troy Athletics to extraordinary levels. Eleven of Troy’s 15 programs finished with grade point averages over 3.0 in the unprecedented 2019 spring semester while the collective student-athlete population posted a 3.11 GPA and eight total programs finished with a 3.5 GPA or higher. That success continued into the 2020-21 academic year, with 58 student-athletes receiving their degrees during the winter and spring commencement ceremonies. He currently serves as vice chair for the Sun Belt Conference Athletics Directors, the cochair of the Sun Belt Conference’s Marketing, Communications and Branding Committee, was appointed to the Sun Belt’s Name, Image and Likeness Committee and began a four-year term on the NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct in the spring of 2021. He will assume the chair role of the Sun Belt Conference Athletics Directors for the 2023 season. Troy’s facilities have also been upgraded under Jones’ watch with new turf in The Vet, a new court design in Trojan Arena and a state-ofthe-art volleyball playing surface. Additionally, the volleyball and track & field offices in Trojan Arena have gone through a rebranding process. Troy’s tennis courts underwent a rebranding effort in the spring of 2021 in addition to the playing surfaces receiving upgrades, while the Troy Soccer Complex will have new turf in place for the 2021 season. Prior to the 2021 football season, Troy released a new premium seating area in the South End Zone of The Vet -- the Ultra Lounge -- which sold out a month prior to the season. Jones led a renegotiation on Troy’s multimedia rights deal with Playfly Sports, which has increased revenue for Troy Athletics for years to come. Additionally, Troy secured a new partnership with Affinity Licensing, which significantly

amplified Troy merchandise volume in the marketplace in addition to increasing revenue and better serving Troy’s fans and merchants. Thanks in part to a new partnership with IMG-L Ticket Solutions, the Trojans set numerous benchmarks during his four-plus years at Troy, including record-breaking attendance numbers for Troy football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, volleyball, softball and baseball. Men’s basketball season ticket sales increased by 400 percent during his first season in the AD chair, while a record number of season tickets were sold for football, baseball and women’s basketball. Jones, who was introduced as Troy’s Director of Athletics on June 12, 2019, took over the role following a two-year stint as Troy’s Deputy Director of Athletics for External Operations. In his role as Deputy Director of Athletics, Jones had oversight of marketing, communications, advertising, ticket sales, Troy Sports Properties, broadcasting, promotions, fan engagement, fan experience, branding, licensing and trademarks. He served as the sport administrator for the baseball program and oversaw football scheduling. Jones spearheaded a partnership with Troy University’s Hospitality, Tourism and Sports Management program to offer a revenue generation class that assists in outbound sales efforts, ticket sales, marketing, hospitality, customer service and retention efforts. Also, several unique campaigns and events have been established including an online athletic merchandise store, the football Tailgate Terrace Concert Series, OneTROY Fridays, the Community Hero ticket plan, bowl socials around the state, a marketing, sales, and best practices partnership with the Montgomery Biscuits, performing a Trojan Takeover in New Orleans and Mobile during Troy’s two most recent bowl appearances and hosting a Troy University graduation in New Orleans for graduating football players, cheerleaders and band members during the R&L New Orleans Bowl. Jones is a 2013 graduate of the prestigious D1A Institute and a member of NACDA, ICLA, and NACMA. He is a frequent speaker and presenter for the CALS, NACAA and ICLA conventions as well as being an attendee for the inaugural Surefire Baseball Forum. Jones was a standout college baseball player at Oglethorpe University. He is married to the former Tracey Styers and they have two children, son Jaxson and daughter Payton Grace.

Chip Lindsey, one of the nation’s most innovative offensive minds, begins his third season as Troy’s head coach. Lindsey, 46, has been the architect of some of the nation’s most electric offenses since moving to the collegiate ranks and his first two seasons with the Trojans were no exception. Additionally, he navigated the Trojans through the unconventional 2020 season as Troy was able to play 11 of its 12 scheduled games with the lone cancellation coming because of an opponent’s inability to play. In 2020, Troy ranked 21st nationally and second in the Sun Belt averaging 290.2 passing yards per game while sophomore quarterback Gunnar Watson led the league with 237.9 passing yards per game and by completing 70.1 percent of his pass attempts, a mark that ranked seventh nationally and third all-time in Troy history. The Trojan offensive line was also one of the best pass blocking units in the country as the group checked in third (at least 300 passing attempts) nationally per Pro Football Focus’ OL Pass Blocking Efficiency – Troy allowed just nine sacks, six quarterback hits, 45 hurries and 60 pressures in 494 passing situations. Linebacker Carlton Martial tied for first nationally with 113 tackles, which included a 21-tackle game against Coastal Carolina. The Trojans improved 63 spots nationally in scoring defense from 2019 to 2020 and 38 spots in total defense. Troy led the country with four defensive scores and the Trojans finished the season ranked as the nation’s No. 15 defense per PFF. In his first season, the Trojans topped the 500-yard mark in total offense on six different occasions to tie the program’s DI record and scored 35-plus points eight times; the second most in program history and fourth most in Sun Belt Conference history. The Trojans finished ninth nationally in passing offense (313.2), 25th in scoring offense (33.8) and 18th in total offense (456.3). He also guided quarterback Kaleb Barker, just 331 days removed from an ACL injury, to one of the best seasons in Troy history. Barker finished third nationally in completions per game (24.92), fifth in yards per game (302.3), fourth in 300-yard passing games (6) and 14th in touchdown passes (30). Among the Troy all-time greats to play the position, Barker finished third in touchdown passes and passing yards (3,628) and fourth in completions (299). Both Barker and receiver Kaylon Geiger were named to the All-Sun Belt First Team and Geiger was the league’s Newcomer of the Year. On the defensive side of the football, Martial became just the 12th player in the last 20 years to finish a season with 100 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and three interceptions on his way to AllAmerica honors while true freshman safety Dell Pettus was named a Freshman All-American. Both offseasons saw the positive momentum continue as Lindsey and his staff signed two of the top recruiting classes in program history. The 2020 class was the second-ranked class in the Sun Belt

and the third-highest rated class in school history according to 247Sports. Troy added 17 threestar players in the class including several ranked near the top 100 in their position nationally. The most-recent class featured the highest per-player average ranking and didn’t include a handful of Power Five conference transfers. Lindsey’s first stint at Auburn as an offensive analyst resulted in the Tigers winning the SEC Championship and making a BCS National Championship run, while his most recent tenure on The Plains saw Auburn set school records and post one of the best offensive seasons in SEC history. In 2017, Auburn became just the eighth team in SEC history and the first in Auburn history to rush and pass for 3,000 yards in a season. The Tigers also ranked 26th nationally in total offense and set an Auburn record scoring 327 points in SEC play. Auburn won the SEC West Division after knocking off a pair of top-ranked teams in Georgia and Alabama over a three-week period. All-SEC quarterback Jarrett Stidham, the second Auburn player ever to throw for 3,000 yards in a season, led the SEC and ranked ninth nationally in completion percentage. Running back Kerryon Johnson was SEC Offensive Player of the Year, and Ryan Davis set an Auburn receiving record with 84 catches. Prior to leaving for Kansas, Lindsey’s final season at Auburn saw the Tigers defeat Pac-12 Champion Washington and nationally-ranked Texas A&M. Lindsey returned to Auburn from Arizona State, where he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2016. The Sun Devils started 5-1 before losing three quarterbacks to injury; running back Kalen Ballage tied an NCAA record scoring eight touchdowns in a 68-55 win over Texas Tech.

As offensive coordinator at Southern Miss from 2014-15, he developed the Conference USA 2015 Offensive Player of the Year and current San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens, who ranked second in the league in passing yards (4,145) and TD passes (36), and ranked in the top eight in the nation in both marks in 2015. The Southern Miss offense broke five singleseason school records in 2015: completions (312), passing yards (4,263), total offense yards (6,758), touchdowns (67) and points (528), as the Golden Eagles recorded nine wins, a Conference USA West title, and a berth in the Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl against Washington. Lindsey’s 2015 Golden Eagle offense ranked fifth in the nation in total touchdowns, seventh in total points, eighth in total passing yards and completions, and 12th in points per game and passing yards per game. The 2015 Golden Eagles tallied more than 4,200 passing yards and just under 2,500 rushing yards. The national leader with 102 explosive plays, Southern Miss was just the second school in FBS history with a 4,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard receiver and two 1,000-yard rushers. Prior to his first stint at Auburn, from 2011-12, Lindsey served as head coach at Spain Park (Ala.) High School, leading the school to its first 6A regional championship. Lindsey served as quarterbacks coach at Troy in 2010, following a long and distinguished career as a prep coach (1997-2009) in football and baseball. At Troy, he coached the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year Corey Robinson and helped guide the Trojans to their fifth consecutive Sun Belt Championship. Robinson set a school record for completions (321) that season while his 3,726 passing yards rank as the second most in Troy history; he threw for 387 yards and four touchdowns in Troy’s New Orleans Bowl victory.

The Trojans totaled the second most passing touchdowns (33) and most completions (340) in a season in school history. A two-time coach of the year honoree (200809) at Lassiter (Ga.) High School, he guided the development of Parade All-American Hutson Mason, who broke every single-season state passing record in 2009, including passing yards (4,560) and touchdowns (54), and Phillip Lutzenkirchen, who would break tight end records at Auburn. The Trojans went 12-1 and won a regional championship in 2009, and Lindsey received state coach of the year honors from the Atlanta Falcons and the Cobb County Touchdown Club. The Associated Press, Marietta Daily Journal and Cobb County Touchdown Club named him the 2008 Georgia Coach of the Year. Lindsey served as offensive coordinator at Hoover (Ala.) High School in 2007 as the team finished 10-2 and advanced to the third round of the state playoffs. Lindsey’s first experience as a head coach came from 2005-06 at Colbert Heights (Ala.) High School, where he earned 2006 Coach of the Year honors from the Florence Times-Daily. Lindsey spent the 1997-2004 seasons as an assistant coach, including Florence, Deshler, Sparkman, and Springville High Schools in Alabama. Lindsey played football at the University of North Alabama before transferring as a student to Alabama, where he received his bachelor’s degree in history and English in 1997. He earned a master’s in educational leadership from the University of Phoenix in 2005. A native of Madison, Ala., Lindsey graduated from Bob Jones High School, where he was a three-sport letterman. Lindsey and his wife Cecily have four children: Claire, Caroline, Cooper and Conner.

Following the program’s first NCAA Regional appearance in 25 years, Beth Mullins and her squad have reloaded and are looking to make another run in the 2022 season. The Trojans graduated just two members of last year’s squad in Katie Webb and Kynsley Rae Blasingame. On the flip side, Troy returns NFCA First Team All-South Region selection Kelly Horne, who set a new program record in single-season program record with a .495 on-base percentage. At the plate, the Trojans also return three of their four all-conference selections. Alongside Horne, Jade Sinness and Katie Lively, both All-Conference First Team members, will suit back up in the cardinal and white for the Trojans. Sinness came just one run scored short of tying Troy’s single-season record (53). The freshman ranks second in runs scored behind Troy Hall of Famer Sandy Atkins. Hometown favorite Leanna Johnson will also return to the circle for the circle looking to continue rewriting the Troy record book. Following last season, Leanna Johnson tied for seventh in single-season shutouts with seven, a mark she also achieved back in 2019. Johnson also ranked fifth in single-season wins (21) and sixth in strikeouts (260). Johnson surpassed the 500 career strikeouts milestone en route to a shutout win over UT Arlington. Needing seven strikeouts to reach 500, Johnson fanned 10 Mavericks to become just the second Trojan in program history to reach the milestone. As a whole, The Trojans set a new program record in fewest road losses with seven and best road win percentage at .800. With the win in the final game of Troy’s road series against ULM, head coach Beth Mullins earned her 200th career victory. Coincidentally, the head coach’s 100th win was also at ULM back in 2018. In the off season, Troy added four freshman and a transfer from Liberty to reload the squad. Troy added two pitchers, two infielders and an outfielder in Brookelyn Cannon, Emma Grace Walker, Aayannah Hughes, Taylor McKinney and Blake Gibson. The Trojans will return in full force, playing host to a pair of home tournaments during the first two weeks of the season. Full details on the 2022 schedule will be released in the coming weeks.

INDIVIDUAL CAREER RECORDS « GAMEDAY

The Troy University Band Program enjoys nationwide recognition as one of the finest and most comprehensive musical organizations of its kind. Troy instrumentalists not only have the opportunity to participate in the renowned “Sound of the South” Marching Band, but also have the opportunity to perform in the Symphony Band, four concert bands, jazz Ensembles, the Basketball Pep Band and various small ensembles. The 2015 – 2016 year marked the 50th Anniversary of The “Sound of the South” Marching Band. Dr. John M. Long created the band in it’s current form in the fall of 1965. Dr. Long developed The “Sound of the South” into a collegiate ensemble that has developed a national reputation for its quality musicianship and exciting, innovative arrangements and drill design. The “Sound of the South” Marching Band entertains audiences regularly at all Troy home games and several away games. Recent away appearances include Troy University’s bowl appearances at the Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose, Calif., the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., and three appearances at the New Orleans Bowl in the Louisiana Superdome. In fact, over the past few years, the “South of the South” Marching Band has traveled tens of thousands of miles entertaining audiences literally from coast to coast. Additionally, the “Sound” has been featured on all major broadcast and sports networks including ESPN, Fox Sports South and USA television networks. Other honors which the “Sound of the South” has received is the representation of the State of Alabama at the Inaugural Parades of President Richard Nixon (1969 and 1973), President Ronald Reagan (1985), and President George Bush (1989). The “Sound” has also performed halftime shows

with Grammy Award-winning artists Brian McKnight, Lee Greenwood, The Temptations and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, Chubby Checker. The “Sound of the South” Pep Band performs at all men’s and women’s basketball home games. Comprised of 30 musicians from all academic disciplines, the pep band entertains the home crowd with great music and irreverent, energetic cheering. This group travels with men’s and women’s basketball to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, as well as the NCAA Tournaments. Membership in the basketball pep band is by audition, and it performs from Mid-October to April each academic year. The “Sound of the South” is the largest student organization on campus and its members have produced leaders in academics, student government, and athletics, as well as other areas of campus life. Students have the opportunity to participate in several professional organizations including Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, Phi Mu Alpha, Sigma Alpha Iota and Phi Boota Roota. With a new facility on the way and first-year head coach Skylar Meade in charge, it’s an exciting time to be a Troy Baseball fan. After a 27-26 season last year, Meade was named manager in July, following four seasons as the pitching coach at South Carolina. Meade has gotten right to work preparing for the upcoming spring season. The Trojans have just finished fall camp culminated by the ‘Battle of Troy’, and continue to have individual workouts to work on their craft. The spring schedule was announced earlier in the month, which sees the Trojans open the 2022 campaign with a four-game series against Holly Cross at Riddle Pace Field (Feb.18-20), this will be Skylar Meade’s first home series as the Trojan’s manager. Troy will also face some of the best in college baseball as the schedule has them taking on Alabama in Tuscaloosa and seeing Auburn twice with a home and road game on the schedule followed by a trip Georgia tech who they saw earlier in the fall. The Trojans will also welcome in Indiana to Riddle Pace Field for a three-game series on March 11-13. The Sun Belt Conference schedule returns to 30 games this year highlighted by a homehome against in-state rival South Alabama. Tickets for the 2022 Troy Baseball season will go on sale on December 1. This Trojan team will have many returning faces and see eight new freshmen join this year’s squad. The Trojans also used the transfer portal to their advantage, adding outfielder Trey Leonard from the University of Louisville and Brady Moore from Coastal Carolina. The Trojans also turned to the junior college level to find talent with Colton Hipp and Will Mangurian to name a few coming from the JUCO level. Returning to lead the Trojans is senior Rigsby Mosley who was a Preseason Perfect Game All Sun Belt Team member as well as Preseason No. 39 outfielder in the nation last year. He played and started in all 53 games. He held a .279 batting average with 58 hits which ranked third on the team, 17 doubles which ranked first in the conference, one triple and a homerun to finish with 23 RBIs. Mosley had the fourth highest OBP at .367 his 29 runs scored was fifth on the team to go along with a .992 fielding percentage with 112 putouts.

Barry McKnight is celebrating his 20th season as the play-by-play “Voice of the Trojans” in 2020. A veteran of the broadcast industry, McKnight serves as the co-host of a sports talk radio show on WMSP-740 AM in Montgomery, where he has served in that capacity for the last 22 years. McKnight was selected as the 2010-11 recipient of the Sun Belt Conference Broadcaster of the Year award. He also works in television broadcasting, where he served as the primary play-by-play announcer for College Sports Southeast’s football, basketball and baseball coverage from 1997 until 2001. A nine-time winner of Associated Press Awards for broadcast excellence, he is a member of the American Sportscasters Association and National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Jerry Miller is entering his 29th year with the Troy Sports Radio Network and his 15th in the booth as the color analyst for football. For his first 11 years, Miller provided interviews, insight and analysis from a unique perspective on the sideline. A Troy alum and longtime supporter of the athletic program, Miller also serves as the color analyst for home Trojan men’s basketball and baseball games, in addition to his work covering numerous local high school events on both television and radio. Miller in a member of the Troy Baseball Hall of Fame. Junior Louissaint begins his third year as the sideline reporter for the Troy Sports Radio Network. Louissaint was a two-year starter for the Trojans in 2003-04 and famously returned a fumble 63 yards for a touchdown in Troy’s victory over No. 19 Missouri. Louissaint, a native of Miami via Haiti, went on to play professionally with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and then in the AFL with the Lakeland Thunderbolts and Florence Phantoms. Following his football playing days, Louissaint was an assistant coach at Pike County High School for three years and two years as the head varsity girls basketball coach. Doug Amos begins his sixth season as the studio host for the Troy Sports Radio Network. In addition to working in studio for Trojan football broadcasts, Amos also serves as the play-by-play voice for Troy men’s basketball home games on the radio and as the play-by-play voice for Troy women’s basketball on ESPN+. For 20 years, Amos was the radio voice for the Faulkner University athletic department, broadcasting football, basketball and baseball games through the 2015-2016 seasons. In addition, Amos hosts a sports radio show in Montgomery alongside his co-host Charlie Trotman, a former quarterback at Auburn. The show airs on WTXK The Ticket, a TSRN affiliate.

TROJAN TALK The weekly Chip Lindsey call-in show, Trojan Talk, originates from Momma Goldberg’s on Highway 231 in Troy weekly from 6-7 p.m. The fast-paced show hosted by Barry McKnight, the Voice of the Trojans, features Troy players, coaches and fans.
