2012 Troy Trojans soccer

2012 Season Preview The 2012 Troy women’s soccer team will look to improve upon a nine-win campaign from a season ago that saw the Trojans advance to the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Trojans return four of their top five scorers from a season ago, including sophomore Chelsey Williams. Williams led the team with 19 points on nine goals in her freshman campaign, including two game-winners. Nikki Stamaris returns for her senior year after finishing last season with two goals and three assists. Maddie Tieken will be called upon as a forward in 2012, after finishing last year with three goals and two assists. The Trojan midfield will be held down by a strong group, including returners Samantha Morgan and Alissa Jones. Jones notched seven goals and two assists for 16 points a season ago. Juniors Cecilia Thorngren and Kailani Decock will look to continue their development in the midfield. The Troy defense is led by a strong pair of upper classmen in Erin Cersley and Paige McMillan. Both started all 21 games for a Trojans defense that held opponents to just 1.50 goals per game last season. Joining them will be fellow returners Karina Moore and Georgia Wallis, who both saw action a season ago. The Trojans will be looking to fill the void left by four-year starter Ashley Banham in net. Juniors Madison Winter and Caitlin Buono, as well as freshman Katie Comeno-Lewis, will all by vying for playing time.

CLAIRE SCANLAN Assistant Coach Fifth Season Mercyhurst (1996)

Assistant soccer coach Claire Scanlan enters her fifth season with Troy having previously served as a graduate assistant for the Trojan soccer program from 1999-2001 while earning her Master’s Degree in Education. Scanlan brings a wealth of experience to Troy as she has been a player and coach with Ireland’s national team and is currently a member of the Irish National team’s coaching staff. Scanlan has also served as the head coach of Ireland’s Under 23 National Team and was an assistant coach for Ireland’s Under 17 Women’s World Cup National Team. In addition to her international experience, Scanlan’s previous coaching role was as the head coach of the Female Football Academy at Filton College, part of Bristol’s Academy of Sport in England. Under Scanlan’s leadership, Filton College won back to back National Championships in 2007 and 2008, along with two National Cup Championships. Scanlan’s success with Filton College helped guide it to being named as the “Female Football Academy of the Year” in 2007 by the English FA. While at Filton, Scanlan also served as the assistant coach with the England College’s National Team and helped it to achieve success in its inaugural year. She also acted as the Assistant Director of the Girls Center of Excellence where she was the head coach of the under 16 Center of Excellence team. In addition, Scanlan was a player and assistant coach with Bristol Academy’s Women’s senior team in the English Women’s Premier league and helped guide them to a top four finish in the league and three FA Cup semifinals in four years.

6

Coach Scanlan has had a distinguished coaching career to date but it is her playing career that was the catalyst to her development as a coach. Having spent over 15 years as a player on the Irish Women’s National Team, Scanlan has competed in European and World Cup qualifiers and was named the Irish National Team Player of the Year in 1999 and a nominee for that same award in 2003. Having played at Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business, Scanlan was a member of the highly successful Mercyhurst College women’s soccer program from 1992-1996. While at Mercyhurst, Scanlan was a two-time All-American in 1994 and 1995 and was named the Division II Player of the Year and Conference Player of the Year. Scanlan’s first stop as a player following her stellar collegiate career came in 1997 in the Japanese “L” League with Oki FC Winds. She also won a National Championship playing with Springfield Sirens in the W-League and continued that success with the www.TroyTrojans.com

Memphis Mercury where she captained the highly regarded Wleague team. Scanlan’s career continued in Europe where she played with Leeds United in the English Women’s Premier League before she made the move to Bristol Academy to pursue her coaching career in one of the most competitive women’s leagues in the world. A USSF ‘A’ and UEFA ‘B’ licensed coach, Scanlan continues to be involved as an assistant coach with the Irish Women’s National team and is a state staff coach for the Alabama Olympic Development Program as well as a Region Staff coach for the Region III Olympic Development Program.

2008 JILL PINDER Midfield • Sophomore

Pensacola, Fla. • Louisiana Tech

In her first season with the Trojans, Jill Pinder scored a program-record 14 goals, on her way to 29 points, also a program record. Pinder became the first player in Troy history to be named to the Soccerbuzz.com Elite Feat Team of the Week on September 16, as well as the first Trojan to earn Sun Belt Player of the Week, doing so in the same week. Pinder recorded three consecutive hat-tricks against Nicholls State, Jacksonville State and Alabama State, all Trojan wins. Her three goals against Jacksonville State brought the Trojans back from a two-goal defecit to earn their first ever win against the Gamecocks. The Trojans set multiple team records during the 2008 season. Their unbeaten streak of seven games still stands as the longest in program history, while the teams’ five hat tricks is also still a team record.
