DRIVE SAFE ALABAMA.ORG DEFENSEPLAY ON THE ROAD. BUCKLE UP EVERY TRIP.

It is no secret who Will Choloh is in the world of Troy. Since arriving at Troy in 2018 as a three-star prospect, Choloh has made an impact wherever he’s stood. Overall, he is characterized as a young man that encompasses what it means to be a Troy Trojan.

Princess took the leap with her four children to venture out from her home nation and provide a better opportunity. This difficult decision allowed Choloh to appreciate the life his mother provided, especially knowing he has plenty of Trojan fans back in Liberia cheering him on.

Once arriving in the United States, the Choloh family got a little bigger with the birth of Choloh’s niece, Lore. When Lore entered the world, Choloh knew he had met his best friend.

Choloh’s journey to Troy is not typical, with many challenging obstacles in his way. The defensive tackle was born in Monrovia, Liberia, along with two of his three sisters in 2000. From Liberia, Choloh began his journey to the United States when he was just six years old. Leading the charge in that journey was his mother, Princess.

With Choloh’s arrival in America, there also came the love of football. Choloh’s hard work and dedication to the game came at a young age when he was introduced to it in third grade. He opened his career as a member of the Gwent Football League. Immediately, his coaches and teammates realized the potential Choloh had on the ballfield.

Now, 16 years later, Choloh enters his final home opener at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday against Alabama A&M. In his five years at Troy, Choloh amassed three consecutive All-Sun Belt Second Team nods while being named preseason All-Sun Belt First Team for 2022. The 6-0 senior has gained national attention, being selected to the Outland Trophy Watch List after ranking in the top-10 among interior defensive linemen with pressures and hurries – finished last year with 40 tackles, seven tackles for a loss and 3.5 sacks. Knowing it’s his final home opener, Choloh mentions how happy he is to play on a field that means so much to him in front of fans that have always had his back.

“Everybody in my family aside from my youngest sister and niece are from Liberia,” Choloh said. “We had to come live in the United States, but it’s amazing to know that I have so many people supporting my family and me from afar. Here in America, it’s just me, my mom, my three sisters in Lovette, Willimae and Mardia and my niece, Lore. We are a close group and have a bond that can’t be broken.”

“When I was in high school, my big sister, Mardia, found out that she was pregnant,” Choloh said. “My niece just brought that piece that we were missing. She brought that emotion and pure happiness that our family needed. She’s always just so ‘happy go lucky’ and optimistic with a big smile. She’s my best friend in the whole world. I try to talk to her every day when she’s not busy with school. I just need that type of positivity every day in my life.”

“There’s been a lot of ups and downs at the Vet,” Choloh said.

“Throughout my five years here, the fans have really stuck with us. I get extremely emotional just thinking about it because I love our fans. I love my teammates. I love this community of Troy.”

“I had great coaches growing up, and I was extremely blessed,” Choloh said. “When I was younger, I constantly had voices in my ear from some great older players telling me that I could make this a lifestyle. I could make this a career. They helped instill the mentality that if I stayed dedicated, I could make it. I’m just grateful because they saw it in me and allowed me to notice it in myself.”

“It’s great to know that my family is going to be there this weekend,” Choloh said. “They’ve seen my progression over the last five years. I still remember they came to my first-ever college football game during my freshman year against Boise State. I got in for 12 plays, and we took the loss, but they stuck with me through it all. They’ve been on the phone with me every day, talking with me about things I can do better at and where I’m excelling. My family is the most important group of people in my life, and I’m grateful that they get to join me on this final journey and come watch the home opener.”

Just knowing that there is only a limited number of games left at this stadium for me hurts. But I know that each time we step onto that turf, we will put on a show for everybody.”

Among the many fans that will be “Packing the Vet” this weekend, a few special people will be in attendance from Lawrenceville, Ga.

Deandre Butler’s call to football came from his dad in middle and high school, but he has found a new passion for the game since coming to Troy for the 2019 season after transferring from Jacksonville State.

Butler’s dad, coached the Trojan special teams and running backs from 2018-2020 but was the senior’s coach throughout his childhood, and for two seasons, a coach during Butler’s time in college.

The Opelika native is set on finishing his fifth and final season off with a great season both on and off the field and has taken to the role of being a senior leader by mentoring some of his underclassmen teammates.

“It has come a long way. You can tell that we are actually playing for each other, and you can tell that people are willing to give their all on the field. Coach Sumrall makes it even better, he makes it, so you have to go 110%.”

The arrival of a new head coach and added anticipation to the season has made players like Butler find a renewed excitement for football in the south.

Butler hopes that the 2022 home opener will serve as one of the many memories he has made during his three seasons at Troy. However, he claims that when his playing days are over, he won’t remember the big games as his fondest memory.

A winning culture is something that has developed at Troy since the arrival of new head coach Jon Sumrall and

“I’m going to say this weekend will be crazy. It’s the first home game, a new era with coach, the excitement that troy can bring, I feel like it’s going to be packed. It’s going to be fun. Troy is a football town, it should be a lot of fun with a good atmosphere.”

“Just be a team first player, care for your team. I have my days, but overall on the field off the field, most people know they can come to me. I want people to think that he was a hard player and he played for his team.”

“Playing the big schools will be a memory, but my memories are every day. On the field, off the field, I have a good bond. I made some lifelong friends who I will talk to forever. My best memory is being with my boys.”

The 6-4 senior was a former UAB commit who had aspirations to play in big-time games. An opportunity he earned over the last two seasons with road games against SEC opponents South Carolina and Ole Miss.

“I wanted to play bigger ball,” said Butler. “My dad was the running backs coach/special teams coordinator here, and I really wanted to play bigger football in general, and it happened that coach Ryan Pugh liked me, and I came here because it was close to home. It was easy for my family to access games.”

to open his third season as a Trojan, Butler has seen a tremendous shift in culture in the locker room.

“I had a meeting with Coach Sumrall, and he’ll be the first to tell you he had no idea who I was,” Coale said. “I told him if you have a spot for me, I’d love to come back and help this team any way I can. His reply showed me what type of guy he was and finalized my decision to be here. He told me that he would have to ask around and find out what kind of guy I was and make sure I was a good guy before making his Bothdecision.”Coale and Sumrall made a good decision, and Coale is back for an unprecedented seventh year as a college football player; he is one of just 17 players nationally to be a seventh-year player.

“I was an injury-prone kid, and they didn’t want me going around playing football and risking getting hurt, so I didn’t play until high school,” Coale recalled. “I had played soccer and baseball my entire life, and my grandpa one day said, ‘Hey, you should try out football and kicking.’” He would pay for me to go and get lessons. So, he, my mom, and my dad would take me all over to kicking camps. I’ve been blessed with a supportive family who sacrificed anything they were doing to help me and my brother go after whatever we Coalewanted.”began

Doing the math, even with the bonus year for COVID, Coale’s college career, at least athletically, should have come to a close following the 2021 season. And it did, at least for a couple of weeks.

“When I came back from California after the holiday break, I was in town for four or five days and in and out of the facility working out and cleaning out my locker,” Coale said. “I ran into Carlton (Martial) one day, and he asked me if I was coming back for another year, and my initial response was, I was Martial’sdone.”plea, which included mentioning a handful of other players who decided to come back when they could have bailed after last year, worked, and now Coale had to convince Troy’s new head coach to let him back.

He has embraced his role on this team and as a walk-on. And if you had any doubts about the type of person Kyle Coale was, we’ll leave you with this.

He lost his maternal grandfather Robert this past summer, and it was he who had turned him to the game of football.

“Being a walk-on has instilled countless things in me that I don’t think I would have learned if I was on scholarship. If they had tried to put me on scholarship these past couple of years, I probably would have said no. I like being a walk-on, I like knowing you have to keep working for everything. Being from a family where my parents can thankfully afford to put me through college, it hopefully opens up another spot for somebody who can’t afford that and give them a shot at a college education.”

his career at Western Illinois in 2016 and didn’t play after suffering an injury. He then moved to Birmingham to rehab, and while in the Magic City, he discovered the little gem in Pike County that we all know and love.

For Troy senior Kyle Coale, the journey has been long. It has taken a young man from Palos Verdes, California, to Macomb, Illinois, to Birmingham, Alabama, and finally to where he calls home now, for the second time, Troy, ButAlabama.forKyle,

“I wouldn’t be here without them,” Coale said. “This year and 2019 have been really hard.”

Coale had already packed up suitcases worth of items from his Troy apartment and flown them across the country to begin the long move home when an All-American came calling for him to give it one more ride.

it was what happened in between and those along the way who have shaped him into the man who was emotional when asked about his family while sitting in a hotel room the night before the Trojans’ season opener at Ole Miss.

He walked on at Troy in 2018, and nothing has come easy Coalesince. didn’t play in 2018 and then missed the 2019 season due to injury, but in 2020 his hard work finally paid off as he punted in seven different games, including at BYU, and then in 2021, was the Trojans’ kickoff specialist.

Off the field of play, Jones has led Troy Athletics to extraordinary levels as academic perfor mance continues to establish new benchmarks. This past academic year, twelve of Troy’s 16 athletic programs had team grade point aver ages that surpassed the 3.0 mark, with eight of the Trojans’ nine women’s programs hitting that threshold. All told, 57 percent of Troy’s student-athletes finished the spring semester with a 3.0 GPA or greater, while 34 percent of Troy’s student-athletes recorded a 3.5 GPA for the semester and 53 Trojans earned a perfect 4.0 in the spring.

During his tenure at Troy, Sumrall helped lead the Trojans to a pair of bowl victories, the school’s first since 2010, the 2017 Sun Belt Conference title, and a stunning victory at LSU. The Trojans won a school-record 11 games in 2017, and the Troy defense ranked first in the nation in red zone defense (.614), second in tackles for loss per game (8.6), seventh in rushing defense (105.3), 11th in scoring defense and 24th in total defense per game (336.6).

“We’ve2021.said from day one that that star of the team is the team, and I think anyone who has followed this group to date can see that we continue to have different players stepping up on different nights to help get the job done,” Lane said.

Robert Lane comes to Troy as the former assistant coach at the Georgia for three seasons, where he went 24-19“This10. group of players has a great balance of experience and youthful eagerness that should allow for a seasonlong journey of growth and development,” Lane said. “We’re far from a finished product, but we have enough talent to make any match a challenge for our opponent.”

Lane’s hiring brought a handful of new Trojans to the roster, including two critical transfers in Jocelyn Garcia from Georgia and Ashley Rainho from High Point. Troy soccer is on a roll in its last three games after starting the 2022 season 0-2-0. Since then, the Trojans have rattled off two big wins and a tie, impressing the Sun Belt Conference with their recovery.

Following the 0-2-0 start, Troy rattled off a massive 3-1 win over McNeese State before tying North Alabama, 0-0 in the South Alabama Tournament. These two matches helped extend Troy’s unbeaten streak at regular-season tournament games to eight, with the team’s last loss coming against Alabama back in 2017.

Thursday night saw Troy extend its unbeaten streak to three with a 1-0 win over Mercer despite battling inclem ent weather. Nia Wilson put all the pieces together in the 65th minute after receiving the throw-in from Jordan Stack for her first-game winning goal.

Troy prepares for its upcoming match on Sunday at Jacksonville State after a 10-day break. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.

The “Sound of the South” is the largest student organization on campus and its members have produced leaders in academics, student government, and athletics, as well as other areas of campus life. Students have the opportunity to participate in several professional organizations including Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, Phi Mu Alpha, Sigma Alpha Iota and Phi Boota Roota.

The 2015 – 2016 year marked the 50th Anniversary of The “Sound of the South” Marching Band. Dr. John M. Long created the band in it’s current form in the fall of 1965. Dr. Long developed The “Sound of the South” into a collegiate ensemble that has developed a national reputation for its quality musicianship and exciting, innovative arrangements and drill design. The “Sound of the South” Marching Band entertains audiences regularly at all Troy home games and several away games. Recent away appearances include Troy University’s bowl appearances at the Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose, Calif., the GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., and three appearances at the New Orleans Bowl in the Louisiana Superdome. In fact, over the past few years, the “South of the South” Marching Band has traveled tens of thousands of miles entertaining audiences literally from coast to Additionally, coast.the

For information regarding band scholarships auditions, please contact Dr. Mark Walker, Director of Bands at Troy University, Troy, AL 36082. Dr. Walker may be reached by phone at (334) 670-3281, or by email at troyband@troy.edu. You may also log on to the internet at www.troysoundofthesouth.org for information about scholarship auditions, special events, upcoming “Sound” schedules and general information about the “Sound of the South.” WE KNOW YOU WILL ENJOY THE SHOW, GO TROJANS!

“Sound” has been featured on all major broadcast and sports networks including ESPN, Fox Sports South and USA television networks. Other honors which the “Sound of the South” has received is the representation of the State of Alabama at the Inaugural Parades of President Richard Nixon (1969 and 1973), President Ronald Reagan (1985), and President George Bush (1989). The “Sound” has also performed halftime shows

The Troy University Band Program enjoys nationwide recognition as one of the finest and most comprehensive musical organizations of its kind. Troy instrumentalists not only have the opportunity to participate in the renowned “Sound of the South” Marching Band, but also have the opportunity to perform in the Symphony Band, four concert bands, jazz Ensembles, the Basketball Pep Band and various small ensembles.

with Grammy Award-winning artists Brian McKnight, Lee Greenwood, The Temptations and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, Chubby Checker.

The “Sound of the South” Pep Band performs at all men’s and women’s basketball home games. Comprised of 30 musicians from all academic disciplines, the pep band entertains the home crowd with great music and irreverent, energetic cheering. This group travels with men’s and women’s basketball to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, as well as the NCAA Tournaments. Membership in the basketball pep band is by audition, and it performs from Mid-October to April each academic year.

This year the Trojans are led by Julia Brooks and Amara Anderson. Brooks, an All-Sun Belt First-Team honoree last season and the only Trojan named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Team this year, was one of four Trojans to start all 31 matches and play in all 113 sets. In addition, she was the only player in the conference to be ranked in the top 10 in four statistical categories (hitting percent, kills/set, blocks/set & points/set). She returns to lead the Trojan offense after finishing with 353 kills and 3.12 kills per set last season.

Key returning defensive specialists include senior Isabella Mitchell and sophomore Caroline Darracott. After 30 matches and 107 sets in her freshman season, Darracott averaged 1.99 digs per set and finished with 213 digs on the year, seeing eight matches recording at least 10 digs. Mitchell last season totaled 111 digs in 65 sets played, averaging 1.71 digs per set with a .944 reception percentage.

Troy volleyball is looking to continue its recent success this season under the direction of sixth-year head coach Josh Lauer. Lauer will be looking to become the first coach in Trojan volleyball history to lead the Trojans to four consecutive winning seasons in conference play after going 9-7 last season.

Anderson recorded 1,166 assists in 2021, making it her third season, finishing with over 1,000 assists, and ranked second in the Sun Belt with 10.52 assists per set. She surpassed the 4000-career assist mark for her career and is the all-time assists leader in the rally score era at Troy. Anderson needs 223 assists this season to become the all-time assist leader in Troy history.

The Trojans welcome six freshmen to this year’s roster. Sara Bates, Amiah Butler, and Maleah Howe will line up as outside hitters. In addition, Ella Brodhead comes to Troy as a middle hitter, as Olivia Grantham and Jaci Mesa are both incoming defensive specialists. Troy was picked to finish third in the Sun Belt West Division in a vote of the league’s 12 head coaches and tallied the fourth-most points overall in the conference voting.

The 2021 season saw the Trojans take down Power Five teams in the same season, with wins over Alabama, LSU, and Virginia Tech. Troy will match up with four Power Five teams this season.

The junior from St. Louis, Mo., along with her offensive capability, currently ranks fourth in the program, with 66 solo blocks, only needing 18 to become the all-time leader at Troy. Her 252 total blocks rank seventh as well.

Our team is looking forward to the tremendous competition in front of us this season,” Lauer said. “Our goal is to be our best in November, and I’m extremely proud of our team’s hard work so far. I’m looking forward to being a part of the continued growth we will have all season long and every opportunity we get to compete together this fall.”

The postseason is always the goal, and the Trojans made their second consecutive postseason appearance last season in the NIVC and hosted a postseason match for the first time in program history. Troy went on to beat Middle Tennessee in the first round.
