THE COLOUR, ATMOSPHERE AND EXCITEMENT OF A DAY AT THE RACES CREATES A BUZZ THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO REPLICATE.
Thoroughbred racing is a unique sport, entertainment and leisure pursuit that captivates thousands across South Australia, and indeed Australia. The benefits of thoroughbred racing also stretch beyond an entertaining day out. They extend into the community and social fabric of South Australia, as well as the State’s economic wellbeing. The thoroughbred racing industry generates more than $280 million annually in benefits to the State’s economy and supports the full-time equivalent employment of more than 2,500 South Australians. In 2011/12, over half a million people attended races in South Australia— second only to the AFL. This is made possible by the passionate and dedicated staff from the State’s 25 racing clubs along with the thousands of volunteers at our provincial and country clubs that work tirelessly behind the scenes. They ensure the races cater for everyone, from enthusiastic punters

to racing novices, fashionistas and young families. There is something for everyone. Nowhere is this more evident than the action-packed calendar of race meets scheduled for the next 12 months. Regional Cup Days are often the biggest and most eagerly anticipated event of the year within their community. Then, of course, there is the TattsBet Adelaide Cup and Adelaide Racing Carnival at Morphettville, which returns bigger and better than ever in 2015. A range of carefully crafted events, activities and precincts are continually added to our much-loved race meets. This includes The Paddock, a new food and wine precinct inviting attendees to indulge in a luxurious picnic setting. It was added to the historic Oakbank Easter Racing Carnival in 2014 and will feature prominently at this year’s event. The Gourmet Gallop series is also growing, providing racegoers with the opportunity to sample top regional produce while the horses battle for honours on track and the style leaders compete off track in Fashion at The Races events. I encourage you to attend one of South Australia’s many race meets during the next 12 months because there’s nothing quite like a day at The Races.

From traditional well-cut dresses, to a slick suit or a contemporary all-in-one, it is important that you choose something that is flattering, comfortable and compliments your figure.

Classic black and white is always chic, but the alternative pop of colour and print offers a perfect way to inject some fun and personality into your outfit.

BL ACK CAVIAR
All the excitement of racing was bundled up in one powerful, invincible package called Black Caviar. Every punter in the packed house at Morphettville will talk about the magic of the moment for the rest of their lives.
GET RACING OAKBANK MIGHT BE THE PICNIC. THE ADELAIDE CUP IS THE CUP. BUT THE FIRST THREE WEEKS IN MAY ARE THE HEART AND SOUL OF HORSE RACING IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA. OUR RACING HISTORY TELLS US SO. AND THE LATEST RESULTS POINT TO MORE GOOD FORM AHEAD. BY LANCE CAMPBELL
Y
ou only had to be human for the hairs on the back of your neck to stand up when Black Caviar won The Goodwood. We were in reach of greatness when “The Mare” honoured us with her presence for the Adelaide Racing Carnival of 2012. All the excitement of racing was bundled up in one powerful, invincible package called Black Caviar. Every punter in the packed house at Morphettville, from dedicated racegoer to one-off party person, will talk about the magic of the moment for the rest of their lives. That’s what they did 82 years earlier, when the immortal Phar Lap dropped by to say hello in the same month of May. Three years before Black Caviar, your heart might have skipped a beat when Takeover Target looked beatable for a few strides in The Goodwood. He rallied,
and The Goodwood was to be his final victory. Two months later in England, it was all over for the people’s horse. The Adelaide Racing Carnival is time-honoured – the Group 1 Goodwood is South Australia’s premier race, the Group 1 SA Derby is our classic. Derby winners go on to success in the Melbourne Cup, from The Assyrian in 1880 to Gatum Gatum in 1961 and Subzero in 1992. The Group 1 Schweppes Australasian Oaks puts the fillies centre stage. The inaugural winner, Rose of Kingston in 1982, later gave birth to a Melbourne Cup winner, Kingston Rule. The mighty Mannerism would win a Caulfield Cup. The ill-fated, much-loved SA Derby winner Mummify would do likewise. Last year our own little champ, Miracles of Life, reversed the usual

showcase in May. The likes of Bart Cummings and Colin Hayes led the racehorse training pack here at the Morphettville showcase. Then they would set off to plunder the rich races of the east in the spring, and on into the autumn. Cups and Derbies and black type sprint race trophies would regularly return to SA with their new owners. Similarly, the stables of Melbourne and Sydney would cross our borders to try to pinch a Derby or a Goodwood, or a Cup before it moved to March. The thoroughbred breeding industry spread its influence across Australia. Our jockeys could ride winners anywhere, from Victoria Park to Paris, not to mention the English Derby. Well, guess what? It’s starting to happen all over again. Last spring at Moonee Valley a horse called Adelaide did indeed win the Cox

process by returning home from Victoria with a Blue Diamond to take out the Group 2 Sportingbet Stakes. This is the quality of the Adelaide Racing Carnival. All around these major races is a swirl of black type, the very best form of racing when every horse is at the peak of its powers and every owner, trainer and jockey is out to prove that hard work does make dreams come true. With a bit of luck thrown in, of course! And racegoers can revel in the carnival atmosphere that goes with a feature race card. True lovers of racing go to “headquarters” every week of the year. The rest respond to the sense of occasion that surrounds The Derby and Co each May. The Fashion at the Races competition is only one way of ensuring never a dull moment between races. For decades SA was a major force in Australian racing, with its own national

Plate, the connoisseur’s race in Australia. But there is a lot more to it than that. On Emirates Stakes Day, the last of the Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington, SA horses won five of the nine races. Shades of SA’s own David Hayes, who trained six winners on Derby Day almost a quarter of a century ago. Morphettville trainer Phillip Stokes dominated the day with three winners, including the impressive Hucklebuck in the main race, the Group 1 Emirates Stakes. Phillip’s other successes were Held Hostage and Éclair Big Bang. Tony McEvoy triumphed with Le Roi, and Murray Bridge trainer Mick Huxtable with Lord Aspen. The reigning TRSA Horse of the Year, Happy Trails, won the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes for trainer Paul Beshara. Local jockey Dominic Tourneur had only seven rides, for three wins.
On the breeding side, the years of effort are starting to pay off for Mill Park Stud. “One of Australia’s best breeders” is how a leading bloodstock agent has described the operation based near Meningie. Happy Trails was bred there, as were recent Group 1 winners Fawkner, in the Caulfield Cup and later the Caulfield Stakes, and Go Indy Go in Sydney’s Champagne Stakes. These are the kind of returns on and off the track that all involved in SA racing would love to see continue, and reflect in the sport here, especially in the May carnival each year. With the standard of horses and people around racing now, plus the calibre of the races themselves, patrons have the right to expect they will savour the best in May. This season’s leading trainers – Tony McEvoy, the Jolly boys David and Richard, recent Hall of Famer Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas, and Phillip Stokes – will aim to add to their black type honour roll. The riding stocks are high – Jamie Kah, Matthew Neilson, Dominic Tourneur , Clare Lindop and Jason Holder – can match it with their counterparts in Melbourne. The mainstay of horse racing in SA is ownership. A rarity these days is the individual owner. It’s all about the multiples or syndication to make racing a horse affordable. This draws people to the races in groups. The time they all want to be there is when the big races are gathered together and up for grabs. Your mob might not be able to win the Oaks or the Derby or The Goodwood. But you could win one of the other black type events. On Oaks Day, May 2, the William Hill Classic for fillies and mares also is Group 1. On that card as well are four more black type races, with two for twoyear-olds, which makes for a brilliant day’s racing. On May 9, the $500,000 William Hill South Australian Derby is the star of

the show, supported by the Group 2 William Hill Stakes and the Listed Adelaide Guineas. On May 16, five black type races surround the $500,000 Darley Goodwood. This is the best day’s racing you will find in SA. It is also the climax of a season of consistent attention to the top end of horse racing that begins on April 11 with the Sires Produce Stakes and the Port Adelaide Guineas. As an owner, maybe even a new owner, it doesn’t matter which of these races your horse wins. Or how other many owners your horse has. If it wins, it’s your horse, and the normal rules of human behaviour are put on hold. You might call it the “winning owner syndrome,” but really it’s the “winning horse hormone.” It’s adrenalin, and sharing the rush with your fellow owners is about as good a feeling as you can get. It’s almost surprising that Black Caviar’s many owners actually managed to live through what they did. Talk about an overdose. For this to happen in a black type race, in a carnival, is just about the ultimate anyone can hope for from racing. In this context trainers and jockeys are doing their jobs like any other time. Yet to achieve on the biggest stage in town means more to them, too. There are so many facets to horse racing, all of them brought into focus and magnified at a racing carnival like Adelaide’s in May. The betting ring is bigger; the queues to bet are longer. The crowds definitely are bigger, with more and different moods than on your average race day. The horses are better, much shinier. Everybody’s on their toes, hoping to gain the edge. If your horse wins, or you back a big winner, or you just have a great time, that’s means you’re every bit as good as Black Caviar at going to the races.

S
outh Australian racecourses have long been home to talented jockeys riding thundering horses down the home straight and glamorously -clad punters mingling trackside. But the once humble country track is more than just a scene for top racing and chic fashion, it’s also a growing hub for regional food and wine. From Port Lincoln to Naracoorte and Kangaroo Island, the trail of Gourmet Gallop events held by SA Racing Clubs tantalises tastebuds throughout the state. The next 12 months mark an actionpacked Gourmet Gallop calendar, starting with the inaugural Hills Gourmet Gallop at Oakbank on Sunday, March 15. This new race meet will launch the jumps racing season in South Australia and features wines by some of the Adelaide Hills’ most renowned wineries. The focus remains firmly on Oakbank in early April, when the picturesque racecourse, surrounded by lush rolling
hills and a historic township, hosts the world-famous Oakbank Easter Racing Carnival from April 4-6. Gourmet food and wine precinct The Paddock made its debut at Oakbank last year, impressing punters with its relaxed yet sophisticated grazing area dedicated to all things country chic. This year, racegoers can indulge in The Paddock’s scrumptious delicacies from vendors, such as Stirling’s Red Cacao Chocolatier, Locavore, Quince Catering and Normanville-based Little Acre Foods, al fresco on picnic blankets or wooden tables. They’ll also be able to sip vinos from Sidewood, Somerled and Golding, take comfort in quality barista coffee, enjoy decadent cocktails and create their own picnic basket using the collection of produce on-hand. The pulled lamb burger proved a huge success last year and will be back in 2015, while Wagyu and gluten-free vegetable varieties will also be on hand. The Paddock is a hub for smart casual style and the Panache in The Paddock fashion competition will highlight the refined, autumn-inspired attire epitomised at Oakbank on Saturday. DJ on vintage vinyl. Oakbank Racing Club Chairman John Glatz said the addition of The Paddock to last year’s carnival created a new buzz and allowed racegoers to experience elements of modern luxury within a country picnic setting. He is confident this success will be replicated this year, at the iconic event’s 139th carnival. “The Paddock is the only place for the sophisticated racegoer to be over the Easter long weekend,” Mr Glatz said. “This beloved South Australian race meet offers a truly special experience. So gather together family and friends, escape the chaos of the city and spend the long weekend unplugged. “Enjoy getting away from it all as the country sojourn lingers long into the afternoon and you clink glasses of bubbly and indulge in deluxe picnicking.”
