Few things signify a road trip like an indulgent pastry from a country bakery and South Australia is home to plenty of mouth-watering options. Here we’ve picked five that are far from flaky.
Van Leuven L’artisan Bakery Patisserie Indulgent treats such as croissants, macaroons, éclairs and mille feuille (French vanilla slice) are the order of the day at this exquisite South-East patisserie. Passionate pastry cook Jason van Leuven opened the business five years ago to much acclaim and also specialises in sourdough bread and innovative salads. You’ll find a slow cooked, pulled pork and waldorf salad and an Israeli version, with humus and chickpeas, on the menu here. 31 Ormerod St, Naracoorte
Bordertown Bakery A few streets back from the main thoroughfare of North Terrace is the Bordertown Bakery, an eatery favoured by locals for its fresh breads, selection of sweet slices and hot foods. The vanilla slice and chicken mushroom triangles are among the biggest hits. Open Monday through until Saturday. 99 Farquhar St, Bordertown
OK Pie Shop Another bakery popular with South-East residents, the Cornish pasty, cream buns and custard tarts have won their tick of approval. The almost always bustling diner is also noted for its courteous customer service. 66 Commercial St West, Mount Gambier
Pestka’s Bakery Fancy a pie with a twist? Try Pestka’s Ned Kelly pie, which comes complete with a fried egg on top. For a more conventional snack, opt for the steak and onion, cheese and bacon or potato versions of this traditional Aussie favourite. 17 Dawson St, Strathalbyn
Windara Bakery Sweet tooths take note. The Windara Bakery is the place to satisfy sugary cravings in picturesque Penola. Carrot cake, mini-mud cake, vanilla and chocolate slice are among the satisfying options. 35 Church St, Penola

K1 by Geoff Hardy Vintage Sparkling 2010
No celebr ation is complete without popping a bot tle of sparkling wine with loved ones, especially during summer when balmy nights allow us to linger outside.
W
hether it’s a big family gathering, a few friends quietly acknowledging an achievement or an intimate dinner for two- there’s always
a reason to have sparkling on hand. The Adelaide Hills is home to a wide range of top-notch, award-winning sparkling wines and has something to suit all occasions and tastebuds. Darren Golding, from Golding Wines,
Fresh notes of apple, lime and wild strawberry linger in this delightful Pinot Noir Chardonnay blend, the second vintage of the first sparkling produced under the K1 label. A perfect aperitif, serve this wine with smoked salmon atop bruschetta and a dollop of caviar and dill. Fresh oysters are also a great summer match.
Sidewood Winery Chloe Cuvee 2012 Crisp, complex, dry and focused, the Chloe Cuvee 2012 is a blend of 60 per cent Chardonnay and 40 per cent Pinot. Lifted notes of toasty brioche aromas are complimented by biscotti and green apple flavours. Combine this with most canapés and cheese dishes and you’re onto a winner.
Golding Wines The Last Hurrah Sparkling Vintage 2013
said the region’s warm days and cool nights produce crisp, fresh, lively fruit ideal for sparkling varieties - including the two options his own winery creates. Other favourites carefully crafted to perfection include Geoff Hardy’s K1 label, Bird in Hand and Sidewood. Each offering has its own distinct palate, but you’ll find a common thread in fruity flavours such as apple and strawberries and in the suggested accompaniments such as seafood or sweet treats. These four wineries will be serving their sparkling wines at Strathalbyn Cup Day on Sunday, January 11, providing yet another reason to celebrate in style. It’s a colourful reminder of provincial racing at its best set against one of the state’s most picturesque backdrops and the ideal spot to continue a
A bright palate with crisp citrus acidity and lifted aromas of strawberry and green apple, this elegant Adelaide Hills sparkling is made with the freshest local ingredients. Try it with smoked salmon or seared scallops. For something sweeter, serve with a lemon curd tart or summer berries.
Bird in Hand Sparkling Pinot 2014 A refreshing mix of ruby grapefruit, cherry and strawberries shine through in this top drop made from 100 per cent Adelaide Hills grown Pinot Noir. The sweetness of these succulent fruits is balanced by crisp acidity with a long, clean finish. Try it with smoked salmon blinis topped with horseradish cream and salmon pearls or the Japanese delicacy of sashimi.
