F
While it may boast a stereotypical red desert track and the rustic charm to match, in the fashion stakes, Roxby mixes it with the best of them – and this year’s event was no exception. More than 2000 people made the trek to Roxby on August 6 to be a part of the action both off and on the course, with all eyes on the fashions at the track as The Races SA continued its search for South Australia’s most stylish racegoer. Judges certainly had their work cut out for them, with a record number of entrants participating in Fashions on The Field for the opportunity to become the Roxby representative for Fashion at The Races – a year-long, state wide style search featuring SA racing’s richest ever fashion prize pool.
After a tough elimination process, former Roxby local Katica Cockshell, 23, took out the title and will now compete in Adelaide next year for the major title at SA Derby Day. So exactly what were judges looking for on the day? With such an array of great looking outfits, Katica impressed the judges with her use of accessories and appreciation of current fashion trends. The classic black and white with a hint of hot pink also struck a chord. Also not going unnoticed on the day was Ten News reporter and Fashion at The Races Ambassador Kate Freebairn. Kate made a special appearance at the event looking ever so stylish in an elegant Liza Emanuele number, and giving hopeful fashionistas some tips and tricks as to how to look the part at The Races.

Launching in November, South Aussie with Cosi will inspire local viewers to rediscover their own backyard. Cosi described it recently as “a modern day Leyland Brothers”. “My show aims to get people into regional SA,” he said. “We have the world’s best backyard and it amazes me that 80 percent of people in Adelaide haven’t checked it out. My program will show them how cheap and easy it is and most importantly how amazing it is.” But the show will also be a personal insight into what Cosi values most – family time, travel, the country - and a beer at The Races, of course. “When have you ever walked out of a day at The Races and said ‘how crap was that?’ If you keep your gambling in check you just can’t have a bad day. It’s so much fun,” Cosi said. This year Cosi is planning to take his camera crew to country race meets around

Cosi’s Top Tips for visiting Murray Bridge the State, but the Murray Bridge Gold Cup on October 12 is his homecoming event. “I was born and bred in Murray Bridge. I went to St Joesph’s Primary until I was five when we moved to Kadina,” he said.
Besides the obvious perks, there’s another reason why Cosi puts up his hand to attend country race meetings. “It means so much to the towns and for tourism in those areas,” he said.
“My old man was the local copper and Mum worked at the chicken abattoir! What a catch hey?
“I am passionate about horse racing in SA and I want to see crowd numbers continue to rise, especially in the country.
“Mum and Dad won’t confirm it one hundred percent but I have it on good authority that I was in fact conceived at the race track, so the Gold Cup is a yearly pilgrimage of sorts.
“A big influx of people for a race day has a massive flow-on effect for the whole community – people forget that.”
“Either that or I just can’t get enough of drinking a beer and having a punt!”
South Aussie with Cosi hits the airwaves on Channel 9 in November. Stay in touch on Facebook.
This year Cosi will be at the Cup in a formal capacity, hosting the Salinger Seafood Indulgence Luncheon where gourmet food and wine is the order of the day. It’s a step away from beer and barbecue, but Cosi doesn’t seem to mind.

Murray Bridge set to become a World-Class racing mecca. t will be an exhilarating and history-making moment when thoroughbreds gallop down the track for the first ever race at Gifford Hill, Australia’s grand new racecourse community in Murray Bridge.
I
A joint venture between the Murray Bridge Racing Club and innovative developer Burke Urban, Gifford Hill will set a new benchmark in integrated design with the racecourse complemented by a state-ofthe art function centre and a vibrant residential and equine trainers’ village. Spanning over an impressive 809 hectare parcel of land south-west of
Murray Bridge, Gifford Hill will accommodate 3,500 residential and equine allotments, a motel, town centre, school, open spaces and much more. Murray Bridge Racing Club Chairman Reg Nolan said Gifford Hill heralds a new era for racing in South Australia, expected to attract horse owners and trainers, racing enthusiasts and jockeys from across Australia. “With the racetrack profile complete, the interim rye grass cover sprouting from the growing medium and the irrigation and drainage commissioned, the new racecourse will now have
the luxury of 18 months to consolidate before the real action begins,” he said. “The focus now turns to the construction of the contemporary racecourse building and racetrack facilities, which are sure to impress our racing enthusiasts.” The state-of-the-art racing club and multi-purpose function centre complete the club’s $30 million dollar Thoroughbred Racing Facility which will become the centrepiece of Gifford Hill, featuring an all weather synthetic track, impressive race day facilities and brand new stables.

Mr Nolan said construction of the building is scheduled to begin in September 2011 and will offer racegoers and function guests a spectacular location for a great day out or special occasion. “The racecourse building will feature a welcoming grand entrance foyer and will incorporate public, members and committee dining facilities, all with a spectacular vista over the track through an east-facing floor-to-ceiling glass wall,” Mr Nolan said. “Racegoers and patrons will be able to enjoy panoramic views over the track and it will be the perfect venue for events, conferences and weddings.”

Mr Nolan said the world-class project would be welcomed by visitors and racing enthusiasts from across Australia, while complementing the state’s existing racecourses.
“We are proud to be behind a project of such magnitude in Murray Bridge. This is going to be a premium racecourse community, built entirely from the ground up,” he said.
“This is an exciting time for all South Australians as this new racecourse community is an exceptional offering which will set new standards across the nation and become a drawcard for interstate and international visitors,” he said.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to work alongside the racing club to develop a magnificent facility that will have such a positive impact on the town and the local community. There’s no doubt Murray Bridge will become a prestigious venue for Australian thoroughbred racing in the near future.”

A Clear Clare Winner
I
f you’re looking for the perfect weekend getaway this spring, the Taminga Hotel Clare Cup on November 27 is an event not to be missed. But before you set up camp at the track, detour past the Taminga Hotel in the main street of Clare. Owner John Giannitto is proud of his family’s hotel tradition and their knack for transforming “old school” hotels into awardwinning destinations. The Giannitto clan also owns the Gawler Arms and Southern Hotels in Gawler. After undergoing major renovations in 2008/2009, the Taminga Hotel was awarded
the South Australian Hotel Association’s prize for ‘Best Redeveloped Hotel (Country)’ and backed that up this year with the Best Gaming Venue (Country) 2011. Here you’ll find a full bistro menu with delicious, home style dishes. You’ll also find a boutique bottle shop with a selection of local Clare Valley Rieslings that are only available through John or at local cellar doors. A nice addition to the picnic basket! John is himself an avid racegoer and the Clare Cup was one of the reasons he first visited the town. He also saw a great opportunity after completing

renovations of the Taminga Hotel to support local racing and attract more visitors to this stunning wine region. “This is a great part of the world and The Races bring so many people to the area,” John said. For the past three years running, the Taminga has been the major sponsor of the Clare Cup. Last year John literally brought his Hotel to the track - setting up an inflatable replica with full bar service indoors and face painting for the kids outdoors. inviting racegoers back to the Hotel after the event and distributing special deals on food and wine. The night’s celebrations will also feature live music.
And since he’s so passionate about the Clare Valley and everything it offers tourists, John hopes those attending the Clare Cup turn it into a long weekend.
You might even run into a world famous winemaker or two – Peter Barry from Jim Barry Wines and Noel Smith from Cardinham Estate are just a couple of the regulars.
“You need at least three days to really explore Clare and the surrounding towns,” John said. “The Caravan Park, motels and B&Bs in Clare are great to use as a base to travel to

ollie Rothe is more than just a racing fan – she’s a fanatic.
At 100-years-old, Mollie has racing in her blood. She grew up at Oakbank and attended the Oakbank Easter Carnival each year. Her brother was a trainer – who in 1932 trained the winner of the famous Great Eastern Steeplechase. And perhaps most notably, Mollie still drives herself to race meetings at Morphettville Racecourse every Saturday – just as she has been doing since becoming a
South Australian Jockey Club member in 1991. So what is it about The Races that keeps Mollie interested and how much has it changed over the years? Mollie says the Oakbank Carnival still has the same atmosphere today as it did all those years ago. “It hasn’t changed at all, really,” she said. “It always was a lovely picnic day and over the years it’s remained so. “I’ve attended the Oakbank Carnival for as long as I can remember!”

Having grown up around the track with an experienced trainer by her side it would be safe to say Mollie knows just what to look for in a winning horse, but the social atmosphere of racing events tends to ‘hold her up’ when it comes to having a bet on race days. “Whenever I try to have a bet at The Races, I always get caught up talking to people and never make it there in time,” she said. “Normally the horse I was going to bet on ends up winning.”

In true racing fanatic style, Mollie chose Morphettville as the venue for her 100th birthday on August 6 – enjoying a three-course lunch in the Winning Post restaurant with family, friends and fellow SAJC members. So what’s her secret to health and long life – apart from regularly enjoying a day out at The Races of course? “Three glasses of sherry a day – one-and-a-half at lunch and one-and-a-half at night!”
