The heat is on for Fashion at The Races The competition in this year’s Fashion at The Races events is set to heat up over the coming months – literally. Just in time for the Kangaroo Island Fashion at The Races qualifying heat and the warmer summer temperatures, we caught up with reigning KI Finalist Alex Hecker to get her Top 5 tips on how to look the part on race day. Alex isn’t just the inaugural Fashion at The Races Runner-up, she’s the face of Country Racing Victoria and travels to race days across South Australia and Victoria. She’s already been seen at the Balaklava Cup this year and will be heading back to Kangaroo Island on Sunday 17 February to defend her crown and compete for not only a spot in the Fashion at The Races State Final, but the major prize on the day which is a luxury accommodation package at Southern Ocean Lodge.
Alex Hecker’s
Top 5 tips 1. Pay attention to the finer details of an outfit – the judges will notice if jewellery is well coordinated or if shoes match your clutch.
Recent Fashion at The Races heat winners:
2. Wear a dress that is of an appropriate length and fits well – somewhere around knee length is acceptable and certainly no nightclub dresses! 3. Choose an outfit that reflects in some way a current trend but don’t be a slave to that trend – individuality is great.

At the end of the season the 15 finalists will go head to head at the Fashion at The Races State Final on Schweppes Oaks Day at Morphettville for the chance to win a MINI Ray worth $29,350. The runner–up will be rewarded with a $3000 Perri Cutten race day wardrobe. Will you be the next Fashion at The Races winner? CLICK HERE for more information.
4. Millinery plays an important part in an outfit so make sure you wear it – at some race days it is compulsory to wear a hat or a fascinator. 5. Dress for the weather – a smart coat or cape on a cooler Spring day could make all the difference.

Tasting the Limestone Coast It’s a must for wine and food lovers everywhere and the 2012 Taste The Limestone Coast Festival is set to be bigger and better than ever. Award winning wineries, gourmet food producers, musicians and entertainers from the Naracoorte region will show off their expertise as part of the Festival from February 8 through 10. The event provides the opportunity for guests to experience a range of Limestone Coast food and wines, plus a smorgasbord of local and city entertainment. Starting on Friday with a golf day and open air movies, the event continues on Saturday with wine and food stalls and entertainment. The event wraps up on Sunday with a full day of excitement including the Limestone Coast Farmers Market and the running of the Mini Jumbuk Naracoorte Cup, which happens to be a Fashion at The Races heat. Event organiser Maclolm McEachern said the event was the perfect opportunity to explore the region a little more. “Come for a taste and stay for the race. There is a huge number of visitors who come and enjoy every day of the event and then cap it all off with a day at the races,” he said. Profits from the event will support an appeal for a mobility vehicle based at Naracoorte Health Service. CLICK HERE for more information.

Stable Stars unleashed Remember when you were a little kid and your parents dragged you along to a ‘family day out’ where the only entertainment was a really bad clown who scared more kids than he made laugh? Well, those days are gone. A whole new generation of South Australians is set to fall in love with a day at the races thanks to an innovative new program being rolled out at racing clubs across the State. The Stable Stars Kids Club is a new children’s club that aims to make horse racing more accessible, interesting and fun for the whole family with free membership for children aged 3-11 years. Stable Stars will provide a family friendly environment on race days, allowing children and their families to get active and participate in a range of activities trackside. Our friendly Stable Stars mascot Archie will also make special guest appearances on race days and at local community events. Camp Australia will provide hours of entertainment at selected Stable Stars events, with their team leading craft activities and active games for junior racegoers. Children who sign up to be a member of Stable Stars will be treated to VIP race day experiences, birthday cards and regular updates straight from the horse’s mouth.

thoroughbred, walking up and down the paved footpaths of North Adelaide while its owner casually looks in the shop windows is certainly not a familiar sight. But for Denim and his owner Reb Rowe that’s just what they like to do – once a week at least. The former racehorse is exercised four times a week which will often involve a road
ride through the streets of North Adelaide and up Melbourne Street.
his manure - luckily he doesn’t do this very often though!”
“He likes catching glimpses of himself in the shop windows as we walk past,” owner Reb said.
Reb adopted Denim at the end of his brief stint in thoroughbred racing and says he has become quite the companion
“It’s interesting for both of us – I can pick up money from the ATM, visit some friends and look in the shops. “It’s just like any other vehicle except I come back clean up
“He is chilled out and wants pats – just like a dog really,” she said. A supersized dog, in Denim’s case, but a man’s best friend all the same.

KANGAROO ISLAND CUP CARNIVAL
BEYOND THE RAILS
Exploring Kangaroo Island
K
angaroo Island can be as relaxing or action-packed as visitors wish. From sand boarding down dunes to watching the sunset, the island is as diverse as it is large. In fact, Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third biggest island at 155 kilometres long and up to 55 kilometres wide. Just a 50 minute ride on a Sealink ferry from the mainland or a short flight, visitors will feel far more removed from the stresses of everyday life than the distance they have to travel to get to
the island. Once they’ve stepped foot on KI, it’s time for visitors to let themselves go and explore. Known for its abundant wildlife and stunning scenery, Kangaroo Island also has a burgeoning food and wine scene and art is also prolific on the island. With accommodation ranging from the six star Southern Ocean Lodge on the island’s west end to secluded beach houses and comfortable hotels, there’s no shortage of places to relax after a full day’s adventure. Click here for more information on Kangaroo Island.

hether it’s pastel or navy or somewhere in between, blue hues in stripes coupled with white and neutral tones make this season’s hottest looks. And they’re perfect for transforming a relaxed beach ensemble into a classic race day outfit when you’re in holiday mode on the Eyre Peninsula for the Port Lincoln Cup. Think chic and timeless nautical stripes – of any width – with bright white additions. Pair a statement white blazer with a nautical striped skirt or dress for a sunny day trackside, or choose a flowing blue maxi-dress for an afternoon lunch with the girls.

TASTING THE fleurieu
H
e’s the trainer of South Australia’s ‘horse of the moment’ but Jake Stephens has another passion – hospitality. As the owner of one of the Fleurieu Peninsula’s best loved eateries – The Flying Fish – Jake is full of ideas when it comes to the perfect summer meal to unwind with after a day at the races. And he’ll certainly have plenty of unwinding to do over the coming months.
When we caught up with Jake, the Strathalbyn-based trainer and horse Alcopop were about to jet off to Hong Kong to participate in the prestigious Group 1 Longines Hong Kong Cup. The invitation came following Alcopop’s glory in the Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day – and will see the Strathalbyn-trained horse become recognised on a world stage. With the Strathalbyn Cup fast approaching, Jake gave us one of his favourite summer recipes from the Flying Fish team. owning a racehorse
the thrill of the race Jacqui Taylor with her pride and joy Belleap.
“Now you watch the race from start to finish knowing how the owners are feeling and what the horses have been through to be a part of the race. “As soon as the horse crosses the line I scan the crowd to look for the celebrating winners... it’s the most amazing feeling to have a winning horse – I feel a part of the racing community now!
Y
ou’re standing trackside, watching nervously as your horse enters the gates. The starter’s light flashes, they’re off and racing. You’re yelling, looking for a hint of the colour that signifies your horse is close. The sound of hooves cascading as the pack barrels past you in full stride. Your heart is racing – it’s only the start of the race but whether it wins or loses, you’re excited. For first time racehorse owner Jacqui Taylor, it’s this feeling of elation - no matter the outcome and her new found appreciation for the industry itself that makes being an owner so rewarding. Jacqui has owned Belleap with her family for two years and says race days have been taken to a whole new level since becoming an owner. “It’s not just about looking good, enjoying a drink and watching a few races anymore,” she said.
“I’ve also had the opportunity to visit so many different race tracks around SA, places I never would have been to if it wasn’t for Belleap.” Jacqui is one of a number of young people delving deeper into the fun of being at the races through horse ownership. Nic Yeomans is one of four owners of prominent local horse ‘Go The Knuckle’ and agrees the excitement of the race is amped up by horse ownership. Nic’s also been lucky enough to see his horse compete across the border. “Following the lead up of a horse to race day itself and then if you’re lucky enough to watch your horse win is very exciting – and it usually means you have a few dollars in the pocket too which is an added bonus on the day,” he said. All good mates, the group bought Go The Knuckle two-and-a-half years ago after seeing a friend’s success with owning horses and with the added social nature of being involved
The Races Quarterly South Australia
- it was a no brainer for Nic. “The horse is now being set for a campaign in Melbourne targeting the Standish Handicap on New Year’s Day at Flemington which would be great.” Fellow South Aussie racing enthusiast Chris McInerney has been around the industry for years and has horse ownership - including a share in Bit Of A Dude - to thank for many lifelong friendships. “I’ve met some lifelong friends that we would never have known if it wasn’t for horse ownership,” he said. “Nothing beats that feeling of when the horses are being loaded into the gates and you are rushing around trying to find the best odds available – it unites everyone trackside in excitement, particularly the owners. “For something that doesn’t cost the earth it can bring so much joy.”
